Shodo
‘Yugetsu’ kanji practice - ink on calligraphy paper (hanshi).
After conducting my research into performance writing I was keen to explore the Japanese art of Shodo. I introduced ideas of ritualistic breathing exercises with drawing to my practice whilst in lockdown, and Shodo seemed like a logical art to explore as it focuses on the union of body and mind.
I undertook an online course that serves as an introduction to the art of Shodo and was taught by master calligrapher, Rie Takeda. The course consisted of a series of pre-recorded videos, online resources, guides for where to source the necessary specialist equipment as well as an online forum for Shodo students to interact and share ideas.
Shodo is one of the oldest and most profound art forms in Japan, its origins have been traced back to the fifth century. We were introduced to several Japanese terms in relation to this art form that I found of particular interest as I do enjoy learning of the origin of words.
The word ‘Shodo’ is composed from the kanji characters ‘sho’ which means to write and ‘do’ which means the path or the Tao. In Eastern philosophy the body and mind are one, they do not exist as separate entities. When both body and mind are united you are closer to a sense of ‘mushin’. ‘Mushin’ is a zen word that consists of two kanji characters; ‘mu’ which means emptiness or nothingness, and ‘shin’; which means heart, mind, feeling, intuition, soul, and spirit. In essence when your body and mind are connected you have a much clearer mind that is free from disturbance and distracting thoughts.
We were then introduced to the different aesthetics of written characters. ‘Kaisho’ is the most common, it is a block style character form that is mostly found in books and printed media. ‘Sosho’ is cursive and is much more difficult to read. It was developed as an abbreviated style for writing quickly, for example taking notes in a lecture. It is mostly found in artworks and most poetry is written in this way. ‘Gyosho’ avoids shapes and angles and does not have a clear straight line, it exists somewhere in-between kaisho and sosho. Kaisho is said to be the best style to learn the foundation of Shodo techniques and basic brush movements.
The materials themselves are an integral aspect of this art form. They are not only utilised for practice but their symbolism is also important. They are known as ‘form treasures of the study’, and the preparation of the materials is the beginning of the meditational process of achieving a state of mushin. The practice begins with the preparing of the ink. A little water is poured on to the ink stone (suzuri) and the ink stick (sumi) is slowly taken in and out of the water. An emphasis was placed on breathing at this stage as we guide the ink stick on its journey to becoming a usable drawing material. As we approached this moment of quiet we begin to notice the water becoming thicker as it becomes a drawing ink. At this stage we were ready to begin mark making.
Takeda provided us with information sheets that advised us through the steps of performing traditional kanji characters. We were being taught to write the kanji for evening moon (yugetsu), and were taken through a series of mark making exercises that taught us how to perform the gestures necessary to write the finished kanji.
Directions for how to perform the gestures for the kanji, ‘yugetsu’.
I found this a very challenging but rewarding series of exercises that made me reflect on my own ideas of achieving a sense of calm in my practice. I had previously thought that connecting with my inner self would be relatively straight forward, but found it difficult at times to achieve a state of tranquility. The frustrating part was that it was very telling in the marks that you make whether this state has been achieved or not.
‘Yugetsu’ kanji practice - ink on calligraphy paper (hanshi).
I intend to continue exploring this practice as I have a developed an interest in the last year of calligraphy from other cultures. The otherness of this writing has parallels with asemic writing in that we do not understand its semantic meaning, but recognise its expressive meaning. The difference being we know the semantic meaning exists, we just do not have access to it so enjoy it for its aesthetic and emotive qualities. I would like to approach this area of interest in the hopes that it could deepen my understanding of unfamiliar languages and calligraphies.
I would also like to be mindful of the mushin state of mind in my practice outside of the Shodo tradition. I wonder how achieving mushin would impact the works that I make, in particular, how the performative works would benefit from an introduction of stillness before the writing begins.

it does indeed mean moon moon, you're correct. however, if you wanted, you could do "reigetsu", with the kanji "蛉月 - "蛉" being one of the kanji that can mean "dragonfly" and "月" being "moon".
some other ideas based on your tags:
meaning "dragonfly moon"–
蜻月 (shougetsu/seigetsu)
蜓月 (dengetsu/teigetsu/tengetsu/jougetsu) (can also be read as "engetsu", but i figured that was a bit redundant)
relating to fish–
魚月 (gogetsu/gyogetsu) - literally "fish moon"
鱒月 (zongetsu/songetsu/sengetsu) (can also be read as zangetsu) - "salmon trout moon"
鯉月 (rigetsu) - "carp moon"
()乙()月 (ochigetsu/itsugetsu/otsugetsu) - doesn't directly relate to fish, but the first character is the fishhook radical
鮫月 (kyougetsu/kougetsu) - "shark moon"
鮟()月 (angetsu) - "angler-fish moon"
鱇月 (kougetsu) - "angler-fish moon"
鰻月 (mangetsu/mongetsu/bangetsu) - "eel moon"
relating to the ocean–
浦月 (fugetsu/hogetsu) - "beach moon" (first character is also the "ura" in "urahara")
海月 (haigetsu/kaigetsu) - "ocean moon" (first character is also the "kai" in "kaien")
洋月 (yougetsu) - "ocean moon"
滄月 (sougetsu) - "ocean moon"
溟月 (myougetsu/meigetsu) - "ocean moon"
relating to butterfly–
蝶月 (jougetsu/chougetsu) - "butterfly moon"
蝴()月 (gugetsu/kogetsu) - "butterfly moon"
蛺月 (kougetsu/ryougetsu/kyougetsu) - "butterfly moon" (refers to a specific kind of butterfly i think)
蛹月 (yugetsu/yuugetsu/yougetsu) - "chrysalis moon"
other–
翡月 (higetsu) - "kingfisher moon"
輪月 (ringetsu) - first character is the counter character used for flowers, so i thought it'd be a nice nod to inoue's powers
望月 (mougetsu/bougetsu) - technically this should be read as "mochidzuki/mochizuki", since it's an actual word instead of a couple of kanji shoved together, but this is for magic sword stuff so whatever. the first character references the full moon but can also mean "ambition" or "hope" or "desire"
朔月 (sakugetsu) - "conjunction moon" (referring to the astronomical definition of conjunction
嵐()月 (rangetsu) - "storm moon"
雨()月 (ugetsu) - this one is also a real word, except it's actually pronounced like that this time. the characters mean "rain moon" but the word itself means "being unable to see the (harvest) moon because of rain", which i thought could be interesting given rain's thematic relevance in ichigo's life
閏()月 (ningetsu/jungetsu) - another real word, read as "uruudzuki/uruuzuki", meaning "leap month", although i guess i'd translate my reading as "intercalation moon" for thematic naming purposes
虹月 (gugetsu/kougetsu) - "rainbow moon"
査()月 (shagetsu/jagetsu/sagetsu) - "investigate moon" (since kazui seems very curious)
盾月 (jungetsu/shungetsu/tongetsu/dongetsu) - "shield moon" (referencing ichigo's desire to protect + orihime's shields; first character is the first "shun" in "shun shun rikka")
舜月 (shungetsu) - "althea moon" (referencing orihime's powers; first character is the second "shun" in "shun shun rikka")
if there are other fish or themes you want me to look into, or any of these you want to know more about, let me know! this was fun
I need a name for Kazui's Zanpakutou but I keep coming up with Tsukigetsu and I'm no Japanese expert but I'm pretty sure that means moon moon

Hayatama Island and Crest
Hello, I’m back again talking about Hayatama Island, a island where my Fire Emblem Three Houses’s OC came from. This time, I;m going to talk about Hayatama Island as well culture on there.
As you can guess from the island name and also when you reading all the information on my previous post, Hayatama Island is heavily based on Japanese culture. From the culture to the government, me and my friend decided to base them from there.
As you see from this map, Hayatama Island is located between Foldan. Almyra and Morfis. They relative small island and very isolated at first due to very big incident in the past. Involving the dead of their island patron, a pair of Nabatea named Izanami and Izanagi.
Hayatama Kingdom Banner and Amber Phesant’s Banner
As I previously mention. Amber Pheasant ‘s symbol is a pheasant bird. According to Hayatama’s history, this type of bird has help the first ruler of Hayatama finish his quest and receive the crest of Izanami, that become the sole prove that some one is a member of Imperial Family, the monarch who rule this Island.
Original crest for this Headcanon, from right : Izanami, Izanagi, Hirume, Yugetsu, and Muto
Before we get into the original Crest that me and my friend made for this head canon. I want to explain about this island constitution state and the line of succession.
This place ruled by pair of Emperor/Empress and Shogun. Both of monarch succession as well other Noble family that lived in this island is base on their : crest -> Their birth mother status -> lastly their birth order, the eldest got to be crown as the successor (I don’t know how to translate them in English. I’m sorry).
For Example with our four noble kid :
Takuto born with a minor crest of Izanami, she born as youngest daughter from Fujiwara family and born from official wife of her father. Her elder brother, possessed the major crest of Izanami, so he become the crown prince instead of her.
Yukiie born with major crest of Izanagi, he born as youngest son from house of Matsudaira but crown as Matsudaira heir because his mother is the only official wife of his father. All of his older siblings from is out from favor to be successor because they either born with a minor crest or being born form a concubine.
Saiko from house of Hasiba, born with major crest of Hirume. She born as eldest daughter of her mom, the current head of Hasiba Family with her official husband. Because of that, She been crown as the heir of Hasiba Family.
lastly, Tadamori born with minor crest of Yugetsu, he born as eldest son from his mother, the official wife of his father. But he soon out of favor as successor line because his younger brother, born with a major crest.
I hope the explanation wasn’t weird, I get really struggle explaining it in English. Now I’m going to explain about each crest patron and little bit history why these Nabathean could live in there.
Long time ago, the goddess Sothis visit the island of Hayatama. Thru her kindness she help the people who live in the island to prosper. The people who lived in the island respectfully call her as ‘Okami-sama’ and build a temple under her name. Before she left, she gave birth to several Nabathean to help island people, including the pair Izanami and Izanagi who eventually become patron foundation of Hayatama’s kingdom establishment.
Now let me give insight about the each patron,
Crest of Izanami - The Crest from Izanami, originally came from Izanami. She gave the first Emperor her crest as thank you for helping her husband, Izanagi at war. She granted him to create Hayatama kingdom for humanity prosper .
Crest of Izanagi - Izanagi is the patron of this crest, a blood knight who enjoy a good fight. He gave it to the first Shogun, his best buddy because she’s dying on the battlefield. Just like his wife, he grant permission of Hayatama Kingdom creation for humanity prosper.
Crest of Hirume - Hirume is the eldest daughter of Izanami and Izanagi. She knows every single island culture and festival by heart because she helping her parents to create them. The Patron of the Hasiba temple and family, she along side her brothers sometimes giving their opinion and order to emperor and shogun.
Crest of Yugetsu - Yugetsu the second son of Izanami and Izanagi. when Hirume know every single culture, he record and preserve every single history of Hayatama in his roll like diary. The patron of knowledge and education of Hayatama as well the Owari family. He often pretend to be human lecture of Hayatama school under alias ‘Mochizuki’. Had beef with the Hayatama’s scholar.
Crest of Muto - Muto, the youngest son of Izanami and Izanagi. He likes to travel around Hayatama island after his parents death. The patron of youth and Genke family. He currently settle back to Genke family to help taking care the current heir.
Aside five crest I mention above. There’s actually one more crest that we personally call, a lost crest of Matsudaira. I didn’t mention right in here because we haven’t finish creating the story for it.
I think thats all I can share about Hayatama’s culture for now. I will continue to talk about the character in next post.

But unlike her, it happen due to his Crest. Just like original owner, Yugetsu and his ancester Lady Kaguya Owari they can not stand staying under the sunlight to long. He will become weak and bewilder over his surrounding. I head canon that it also affect on his game play, his DEF drastically change into poorly.
