Akira Toriyama passed away recently, and one of the biggest indicators of how much his work touched lives worldwide is this moment from the very first chapter of Yu-Gi-Oh, where Yugi mentions the Puzzle is similar to the seven wish-granting Dragon Balls.

Can we appreciate how much of a fucking gremlin Seto Kaiba was in his first appearance?

This scene from the manga in chapter 133 (vol 5 complete edition) is making me think, the fact that the first he says is this and his panicked expression, the period Seto was in a coma in the manga even before he got kidnapped was probably so traumatic for Mokuba to think about that he used to always being cared for, and now he himself had to care for Seto. This already adds complexity to the character because in the anime he is always portrayed as the one shielded from the harsh realities despite even his kidnappings and like the one that was cared for, while here it is shown that it’s a mutual thing and not just Seto but also Mokuba had to grow up too fast and did not fully get to be a child.

One of my Yu-Gi-Oh pet peeves is when people talk about the manga or do essays on the manga but aren't really fans of the series and claim that the first 7 volumes were the "original" series and that "Duelist" was the sequel series (or worse, call it a reboot).

No.

The manga is just Yu-Gi-Oh in Japan. The Duelist portion isn't a reboot or sequel. Duelist Kingdom was simply the next story arc.

Splitting the manga into three portions was done in the west, much like how the Dragon Ball manga was split in two parts in the west by adding the god damn Z.

It also annoys me how some people claim that the Duelist portion is more kid friendly and not as dark as the first 7 volumes because it focuses on the card game more. This just tells me that the people who say that haven't actually read it. There is still dark and disturbing imagery and consequences in the Duelist portion (Malik skins his dad alive and outright murders the blimp's doctor when going after Rishid for example).

"Original" Yu-Gi-Oh is the 38 volume manga. Nothing else.

Much like how Dragon Ball is the 42 volume manga.

I feel like these arbitrary separations with DB and DBZ, YGO, YGO Duelist & YGO Millenium World do nothing but get people to skip huge portions of the whole story because they think everything pre-Z or pre-DK is boring/uninteresting without basis.

In honor of Kazuki Takahashi's passing, a writer of the comic website AIPT comics has an essay on how American comics influenced the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga. Influences cited include Hellboy, Spawn and the Danny Ketch incarnation of Ghost Rider.

The fact that Seto appears in the last page of the manga makes me so sad, I know I am probably overthinking this and the only reason that he was added there is because he is an important character, and this was the last page. But it makes me think of the fact that he had promised Atem their road of battle wasn’t over there, and since the filler arcs do not exist in the manga, he probably spent all the time between the end of Battle City and the Ceremonial Duel thinking about the meaning of their rivalry and improving himself to have another duel with Atem and show it to him. KT said that for Seto, Atem is a sort of substitute for Gozaburo in Seto’s mind, so in a way, he would be seeking his approval and to be recognized by him. But when he arrived there, it was too late. Atem was already gone. One of the many losses of Seto’s life.
