(sending this as an ask because it got WAYY too long to be a reply whoops) i really like your opinions on the routes!! especially on the ais waugh…. i am planning on playing kanna's routes whenever i eventually replay this summer + i am excited to see what they entail…. but yeah overall i really like your thoughts and man do i need to replay yttd T_T it has been so long. (+ this is where the reply turned into a small ramble about qtaro because the autism) plus your comment about how the main games have gone + the qtaro thing. sorry i am ill about him. glad to see someone who understands his intent there because although i am not active in fandom ANYMORE i used to see so many people absolutely hating him for that (<- like obviously not the best way of going about things but he had intentions. okay?) (also i would like to make the comment of although in 8th grade i had intense hyperfixation on alice, ever since my first playthrough in 6th grade (HOW HAS IT BEEN THAT LONG?!) qtaro has + always will be my favorite sorry society….). i still remember when 3-1b came out + so many people were like "oh maybe qtaro is not deplorable" meanwhile i was over here #1 qtaro fan sobbing. sorry this is so long
(in response to this ask! also, for my own sake, i've broken up replying this into little sections :] <3 but i don't mind at all!!!)
REPLAYING YTTD
oho...!! i do think even a general replay (without seeing other routes) is really worthwhile to get a better feel for the characters & see how you can recontextualize things they're doing/have said at the time... i love combing through to see what nao and kai were up to in particular just before the main games <3
while i do think there was more that nankidai could've stood to do to differentiate the two routes particularly to make kanna & shin's separate routes feel like an actual choice, i do think that what small things are changed are still worthwhile & cool to see! i hope you enjoy your replay!!! :D
Q-TARO
YEAH exactly... i'm really sad that it's taken until his literal death to truly appreciate him as a character when more morally ambiguous characters like... well. shin, keiji, and even kai (though i'd honestly argue that most people don't see kai for who he is, you know; rather they place emphasis on his attractive appearance...) -- what they've done & how they behave are excused because they're, frankly, thin enough to care abt.
i've gone on about this before, so i won't linger much more than i need to, but i find it so strange that most people don't seem to recognize that - if not in the moment, i can understand that everyone's emotions are in a swirl. even the player's, but in chapter two when he says he felt a connection w kai - q-taro is autistic. and this definitely makes how he approached things in the first main game all the more understandable, personally... being so blunt about it when he'd settled on it being the clear solution, he even outright says that he doesn't want to see any of them just resign themselves right away to being voted out! & then we learn in ch3 as well that he's also experienced suicidal ideation which just lends so much more value to what he says...!! he doesn't want anyone to die, but certainly not with the belief that it's the only option they had. he wants them to at least have the chance to fight, just in case. and he's willing to hold himself to the same standard!
of course, first impressions mean a lot, but i feel like people saw this and completely missed the entirety of chapter 2 where he quickly warms up to gin afterward & even apologizes to sara for all she's had to deal with, despite it not being his fault, and expressing that he wishes there was something he could do even irt miley... he cares so much abt the kids within the group, even if it takes a lot of courage to support strangers when he knows he has other kids waiting at home for him... he still tries his damnedest, you know? i feel like there's something about that you have to respect. even when he's attempting to leave, you visibly see how conflicted he is about it & it's why sara can pick up on it so early, because he doesn't want to do this, it just feels like the only option... which. well. there's something to say about how gin's the one who's freely handing out tokens and yet q-taro goes to someone like sara first. someone who's been steadily pushed into the figurehead of the group, who is clearly strategic... versus someone who resembles the people q-taro's trying to get back to. hmmm. i sure wonder what the implications are here. (& i have a post for you. that you might enjoy... i've been meaning to write it for a while but i forget. but the idea is there.)
but. yeah... they didn't give him much room to grow in their mind after this point, which is so disappointing & definitely created a very toxic space. beyond that, it played into general southern stereotypes of him being the only homophobic/transphobic one, which i honestly often find treatment of to be in poor taste (it can be used well in stories, but you shouldn't just. throw bigotry on characters simply because you hate them...) -- but also just. blatantly untrue?
even just. everything about his treatment of people in general being so understanding once you explain something to him, or his desire to be a good person worthy of looking up to (which is why it doubly wrecks him when he sees himself become disabled/suicidal in the hospital, because he's become such a rotten person and he feels it and it's a terrible, terrible cycle) for the orphanage kids & to prove something to the parents who abandoned him that he's still worthy of being loved too... he believes in equivalent exchange in social dynamics, only ever giving out what you can take, just... in what world would he be so insensitive?
and this isn't even bringing up the fact that he has slightly longer than shoulder-length hair + nonetheless treats kai/mishima with a lot of respect and care even with them both generally being considered (physically, as well as in their demeanor) strange. combined with the fact that he relates to kai on the basis of being "lonely" rather than "loved" for what's unchangeable about them... there's so much there to read into. not just with autism or ptsd, but. gestures. transgenderism, being mixed, so on. things that sara had people to help support her with prior to the death game, or that she lacked altogether (if she's fully japanese)
but i digress! i'm glad that ch3-1 skirted some hatred toward him, but i definitely agree -- he's such a well-rounded characters even prior to that & it deserved to be acknowledged...!!

🤝🗝🎲!!!
which character in yttd would you trust the most?
i thinkkk... for starters, while i would definitely have trust in the teenagers + gin, i wouldn't really say any of them are the ones i'd trust entirely? that being said, i'd probably either say reko, mishima, or qtaro... especially seeing their treatment of sara taking on the role of leadership, and essentially doing what they can to ease the load as opposed to. pushing her further on that pedestal (like keiji), would definitely make me see them as more trustworthy.
if i had to pick an absolute above all, prooobably mishima at first, because. if i heard reko & qtaro were 'famous', even if i've never heard of them personally, i'd be pretty hesitant to go up to them for anything... though, after mishima's death, it kinda just depends on how it plays out :P
do you think you would pass your first trial?
that depends on what it is, of course -- if we're talking the duos' trial (the beds & one key), then maybe... i definitely wouldn't be suited to take the key first, though. i'd rather i start panicking/freaking out about dying while i'm still actively under the threat of it than when i'm supposed to be saving another person (that i'm probably close to).
how many times have you played yttd?
okay this question is kind of funny. ch3-1b i've played once, ch3-1a twice (the second time was to catch up on what happened so i could play 3-1b)... i've only done it with kanna alive, but i've seen clips & i know everything that happens in the shin lives route -- additionally, i don't really remember which yabusame i had alive.
ch2 i've played at least three times. the attractions are fun and i like refreshing myself on the whole thing!! i do need to replay it again though, since its been a while. i've played it enough to have the beginning sequence w sara's dream memorized though!
ch1 is fucking insane for me. i know every single joe & sara conversation off the top of my head and i can recite a few lines of dialogue here and there and i've never failed the birdcage minigame and yet every time i play ch1 its because i'm showing someone the game for the first time and we always always lose russian roulette. on my own i've replayed it over 10 times and with other people probably adds another 3-5 more times. i always use the safe bullets on keiji last & use them on joe first and that's never changed. and i think i'm normal and well adjusted too
anyways to answer the question i definitely need to do a full replay of the game soon... shakinggg

Got to watch Manly’s final video for YTTD Chapter 3.1B. (thoughts & spoilers under the cut)
- It made me so happy to see Gin was confirmed to have autism. I remember a lot of people either theorized or just headcanoned him as such, so I’m really happy for those people who were right, as well as seeing some good representation.
- But Nankida, plz stop putting Gin in dangerous, near-death-scenarios. This is the third time now, plz.
- I can only imagine Nankidai saw all those fans shipping Sara and Ranmaru, and was just like, “I’m gonna make you regret that”. Because man ... Ranmaru wtf? So much for him being the sweet boy. Make me wonder if he may have known her before the beginning of the game? Who knows, I hope we’ll learn more in the final chapter.
- The book of poems about the Shin AI is intriguing. Shin is still a huge mystery in the game, so I feel like that book is, like, the final piece about him. I so want to learn more. *wiggle wiggle*
- I actually vaguely remember in Part 1A, someone (maybe it was Maple?) said that one of the humans is actually an agent of Asunaro, and I thought, “What if one of the dummies is actually human?” Because I really just couldn’t see our main cast being a secret agent.
- The moment they brought up the idea that one of the Dummies was actually human, I instantly thought, “It’s gonna be Hinako, isn’t it?”. Because she and Ranmaru are the only ones I believe who could never potentially die from a failed encounter. And she was always the one who always disagreed with helping other people and was always very pessimistic, so it makes sense that she was a secret agent this whole time.
Kind of weird that this organization has so much advanced tech, including perfect AIs and androids, and have so many things planned ahead ... yet they never thought, “Hey should we make sure our secret agent dyes her hair to match the girl she’s pretending to be?” I guess because no one actually knew the real Hinako, it wouldn’t be an issue.
- I honestly thought it the reveal was gonna be Midori was Kanna’s blood sibling. But nope, it was Shin! I’m kind of surprised. Oh God ... does Midori reveal that to Shin in the Shin-lives route? Oh God ... my poor beanie bunny bitch.
- So whatever happened with the whole “Ranmaru’s collar didn’t kill him even if you failed” thing? Is that just ... completely gone now? Or did I miss something?
- I’m surprised Midori was killed this quickly. I thought he’s be around much longer than that. Oh well. Rest in Fuck You, Seaweed Head.
- I feel so bad for all the Dummies who were killed during the Banquet. What a horrible way to go. But how does the Banquet go down if you got a bunch of the Dummies killed in previous encounters? Does the Banquet just simply go by faster?
- I honestly thought Keiji was gonna die in this part. Nankidai really just love throwing so many bait-and-switches when it comes to Keiji’s life. I feel like his death (assuming he’ll die) is gonna be a real heavy-hitter for Sara/the player.
- Q-Taro, you had such a good redemption arc in the end. I went from hating you to missing you in the end ... I hope you’re playing happily playing baseball in your afterlife. ;_;
- I’m confused about the ending though? Keiji admitted he put Mishima’s collar in the coffin ... but it was actually Q-Taro’s real body in the coffin? Then what happened to Mishima’s collar? Someone needs to clear that up for me.
- I wonder if Manly will upload the Shin and Alice live routes any time soon? I read that the Shin Lives route is completely fucking bananas (especially with Ranmaru). Does Sara use the memory lantern on Shin as well? I can’t imagine him agreeing to that, lol.
That’s all I’ve got to say about this part for now. God, I’m both excited and nervous for the final part. I really want there to be a happy ending, but I feel like all possible endings are gonna be downers, some more than others. ;_;

welcome back to puzzles' giant crate of weird yttd theories. today she brings you one she's actually kinda confident in...
alright i've just finished 3-1b (no lmao i started this post a month ago and I'm finally getting back to it today) and i was talking with an irl of mine, and like they lowkey forced me to try and explain why i felt that mr. policeman being joe's dad was important. i'd sort of thought about it a lot before but explaining it to someone who disagreed with me got me thinking, and i reached a WAY COOLER theory. wait for it. wait for it...
What if Keiji's wish was to meet Mr. Policeman's son?
So I know this instantly has some problems. First, I'm gonna present to you why I think this is true. Then, I'm gonna refute the "obvious" counterargument. This'll be fun! Haven't written one of these beasts in a while!
Keiji is the only living candidate whose wish we don't know because Sara didn't know where he was when she used the lantern. Ranmaru was quick to theorize that Keiji wished for Sara to be in the game because of his jealousy and his knowledge from the transceiver and the knowledge he was given as a dummy. Personally, I think at this point he had already used the Joe AI and some of Joe's mistrust of Keiji had waded in, and while that might support my theory later, I don't really have enough evidence to back this up, other than my confidence that he had used the Joe AI early on in 3-1a because of the dog chain scene. Regardless, this is the most we know at this point about Keiji's wish, and, well... it's wrong? Like, if it's true, there would need to be some wack-ass reasoning, but we have literally played as Keiji before and we know what his actual plan was with the Midori head, so we know that, at least in part, Ranmaru was wrong.
Before we get back to our regularly scheduled programming, for those who still aren't convinced that Mr. Policeman is Joe's dad, I'd like to thank tumblr user @craftybubb (let me know if you want me to get rid of that mention, please, I just figured I should credit you with this information) for responding to my post nerding out about the Joe's dad theory:
the japanese dialogue highly suggests this. it's lost in translation but he wanted to "name his kid who is passionate about his feelings", (情に熱い漢の名前 very literal translation but it's a bit awkward in English)
情 stands out because it's pronounced as "jou" = Joe = Jou Tazuna boom
Anyway, that out of the way, I am now back, a month later, to finish this super awesome theory. I haven't proofread, nor will I proofread, anything before this, so deal with however nonsensical it sounds, this is a fucking tumblr post for Christ's sake.
So, the questions are: why did Keiji instantly trust Sara? and what is the character and plot relevance of Joe being Mr. Policeman's son?
My original thought process here was that Keiji always suspected a little bit that Joe was Mr. Policeman's son, and was thus terrified of him. First, Keiji may have been a bit paranoid that Joe would recognize him somehow, and he also may have been terrified to face up to the consequences of his own actions, those being Joe's status as an orphan. Keiji's fear of Joe is evidenced by Joe's mistrust of Keiji: there were plenty of members of the death game with equally bad intentions at the time, but very few who showed signs of some level of mistrust towards Joe. Hence, Keiji's fear would stand out to Joe. Still, my friend pointed out to me that this doesn't sound like the cool, logical Keiji, that he wouldn't think this way. Although I posited that Keiji's own trauma would prevent him from thinking rationally, I still don't think this theory quite makes sense on its own. The familial resemblance would simply never be enough evidence for Keiji to believe that Joe was Mr. Policeman's son.
So I think there was another element at play, Keiji subconsciously remembering his wish. If Keiji could wish for anything, would he not wish to apologize to the son of the man he killed? The son we now know he knew existed?
Now, we already know that the reason Joe was in the death game was to create "balance" by preventing Sara from taking a massacre route. However, it's been demonstrated through Shin's simultaneous existence as a candidate and as Kanna's wish (via Kugie) that candidates can have multiple reasons to be in the death game. In this case, it's just too much of a coincidence that Joe happens to be the son of the man Keiji killed. Furthermore, presumably, Mr. Policeman was looking into collusion between the police and Asu-Naro, since, well, everything in this game is connected, so along with the man's death, the existence of Mr. Policeman's son and murderer would instantly be known to the organization. Thus, they may have planned for Keiji to wish Joe into the death game in order to have access to both men.
uh tbh i definitely had more evidence a month ago when i first came up with this theory, and i was really convinced it wasn't just a crack theory, but i honest to god cannot remember why. so like, I'm gonna put this out there, and I'm gonna plead and beg that if this so ~inspires~ you to find more evidence, please share.

WHY are the ranmaru apologists dogpiling on sara for "manipulating him" in the logic route when HE'S THE ONE WHO BRINGS UP KILLING EVERYONE IN BOTH ROUTES. like sure sara contemplated it at first but she snapped out of it and told him "actually no let's not" but he defied her decision and killed someone anyway. Ranmaru's unhealthy attachment to her and the lengths he goes for her are ultimately his decision, not hers. (Trying to download the Joe AI into himself in the emotion route proves he's obsessed with sara regardless of what she says and does.)
This is not ranmaru hate, I actually like his character a lot, but you guys need to accept that he's not "out of character" or "brainwashed" just because he does things you don't like. At that point you don't even like him anymore but the fantasy you built up about him before we knew much of anything beyond how he died and his growing crush on sara. And you definitely don't need to hate on Sara because of things HE CHOSE to do.
