Hi everyone! Another quick devlog for Gilded Shadows.

Revising is more or less complete (have to double check a couple of chapters just because I ended up deleting and rewriting a massive amount of content in Ch 8 - Ch 11 and want to double check that it all flows okay.

I have been proofreading and doing the basic scripting (just translating the script to code) for early chapters as well.

I have Ch 1-6 proofread and coded.

In the upcoming week I should finish up all the finally tweaks and proofreading. I should get the script fully into the game by Friday too.

Currently, with six of Yuu's chapters coded, the total word count is 981,000 words. ╰(*°▽°*)╯

I also quickly started putting together some of Yuu's flowchart mock-ups since flowcharts will be among the next things I work on.

I've also done a few small coding things - creating and coding Yuu's chapter screens, setting up his ending screen and other variables, etc.

I always like getting the chapter screens set up at the start. I feel like the moment I can show my first chapter screen screenshot is a milestone of some sort in each route's creation

So yeah, that's about where the game stands right now. Once I embark on Yuu's visual assets in a few weeks, it really will be kind of the final bend when it comes to GS development.

By my next post I should have the final game word count. It'll be interesting to see where that ends up.

When Stars Collide

For those following for WSC updates - I've been still working on the writing after re-planning Daaz's entire story climax and resolution. But I've been doing a few other things as well, such as updating my sprite code with the help of a developer friend.

I also finally got everyone's alternate outfits set up and coded. With the exception of Wil who is going to end up with several more outfits most likely.

It's possible the others will too, honestly. (Same developer friend made a great little dev tool that lets me see and test new sprite assets without having to code scenes in the game where they appear. It's so useful! Love it).

Hoping to get Daaz's route complete soon but of course I only write this one a couple of times a week at the moment so it's going quite slow. But I will get there. 💪

Dr. Yren Stein (Adult, Left; Teen, Right)

Yren is... a complicated case. The man was originally going to be a chef then pivoted his career to being a surgeon before the war. He was recruited under false pretenses by a secret organization that aimed to make super soldiers out of everyday people. Dr. Yren Stein was the one who modified and spliced Teshteal's body, but to no avail; the gradual mutations caused by the radiation from the bombs contributed to Officer Rammstein's appearance.

Yren did not do these experiments out of curiosity or malice. The modifications he did were under duress. The organization that recruited him threatened the lives of his family- his wife and little girl, Alice- if he did not comply. He took on more hours under their threats, practically living in his office by the end. Little did he know, they were doomed to become the organization's guinea pigs from the start.

As the horrifying experiments on abducted adults and children continued, day in and out, he grew more and more resentful of the powers pulling his strings. He started experimenting on himself with the leftover materials, both biological and mechanical. He swore he would burn the whole facility to the ground after witnessing and reluctantly participating in all the torture his superiors put their captives through.

Luckily, the bombs made short work of that. He was frozen in time with some of the staff and when he thawed, he found he wasn't the only one left alive in the facility. One of his victims was seeking freedom, and he took the chance to grant it. If only he could do the same for the other poor souls he had torn apart and patched together again.

Yren later developed mutations from the radiation and gene splicing experiments he did on himself. As one can see, in the top right picture, he wasn't always the creature is, now. Just a normal guy with a German lineage living in the US who just wanted to help people- either as a doctor or a chef.

He lives in a storm sewer utility room. He's adept at making his own utensils, dishware, and most other survival items. He mostly kept to himself out of guilt and shame for all the pain he inflicted before the war... until he met a little fish mutant child. Maybe there's still hope for the future, after all.

I would like to apologize for my rushed drawing of food. It was late when I drew that but honestly, I just did not take the time and care I should have and I know it. It's supposed to be Yren's most common and favorite meal, sausage, and sauer kraut, since preserved and cured meat and vegetables are likely a staple in the ruins. You can make sausage out of most meat with the right ingredients and materials. Also, I'm aware there are other kinds of foods in Germany- this just seemed most appropriate to me for the setting. (Is spaghetti and other Italian food still really popular over there? Also, I heard the bread over there has more flavor and better quality than the stuff we have in the States. Wait- sorry. Got on a tangent. This is supposed to be about my OC, hehe.) If anyone from Germany has any other suggestions of German foods I could include that would work well in the wasteland other than bread, pickled vegetables, and cured meat, then that would be awesome.

Also, that pic of Yren as a teen is ancient. It's technically an older version of this character from before he was a Fallout OC, but here it counts as teen Yren.

Yren Hawke - CN Hexblood Swashbuckler, Ruined

Yren met The Traveler on a normal night, in a normal tavern, across a normal table. He should have known better than to play the game, but everyone who's lost to the Traveler sings the same refrain: the cards had always been on his side, before. But you gamble enough, you'll lose eventually; no winning streak lasts forever.

The worst part of drawing the Ruin card was the ripple effect. He could have handled losing everything… possessions and money can be regained. They're just things. But that's not what Ruin does - everyone around Yren, everyone he loved, was also its victim. The question of whether he REALLY knew he was also gambling with their lives torments him to this day. Was he that wicked? Was he that uncaring? That greedy? Or just stupid, short-sighted, blithely assuming the consequences of his choices would be limited to himself? How foul, truly, is his soul?

Yren travels alone now. Turns out people aren't replaceable.

Yarli Yren | Identity: nonbinary | Media: The High Republic Path of Deceit

Yarli Yren was a Republic Pathfinder and investigator. They had a nondescript appearance that meant they were easily overlooked. They were on Dalna to investigate artifact thefts when the Jedi Zallah Marci and her Padawan Kevmo Zink arrived on the planet to do the same thing. They gave Marci their own preliminary investigation results and a wanted list for the area before leaving the investigation to the Jedi, as Force artifacts are their department and Ferdan (the city on Dalna the Path’s compound is near) was about to be flooded by rains and they wanted to leave to attend to other investigations before that happened.

T’onga | Identity: wlw | Media: Bounty Hunters comic series

T’onga was a bounty hunter and the twin sister of T’ongar. She eventually retired from that life and settled on a farm with her wife Losha Tarkon. However, her brother was killed due to perceived betrayal by their group’s leader Nakano Lash. When news of Lash’s whereabouts resurfaced years later, she left to take revenge. She was “killed” by Boba Fett who also wanted Lash’s bounty. However, the locals retrieved and healed her. Her wife came to her, and the two adopted a Nexu owned by the man who nursed T’onga back to health. The couple created a new bounty hunting crew, and recruited a group of  already established bounty hunter characters. When Valance was captured by the Empire, her crew became the protagonists of the Bounty Hunters comic series. They took a series of jobs, including one that led to them fighting the Knights of Ren and managing to survive. 

Although she can be brash at times, T’onga is a good leader and able to keep together a crew of strong and often differing personalities. Most recently, Valance Berliet joined their crew, which caused Inferno Squadron to hunt them and damage Valance’s personality matrix. With their Nexu dead, Losha traumatized, and the Empire hunting them, T’onga dosed her wife with sleeping gas so Tashu Leech could take her away from their crew. The couple will eventually reunite, as during the time of the New Republic T’onga is still hunting with Losha once again part of her crew. Her desire for revenge against Lash was driven by her culture’s views about honor and the connection between twins. However when Lash explained what really happened on the job that killed T’ongar, she gave up on revenge. She also feels obligated to save Valance from the Empire and save his mind because of their past work together.

Just finished empire of storms, dunno if i mentioned this but i gave up on reading eos and tower of dawn at the same time. Every chapter got me invested in both stories so it was a struggle to put down one just to go to the other and vise versa.

I love Elide and Lorcan, can’t wait for him to grovel at Elide’s feet. Manon and dorian are the cutest and sexiest couple no one can change my mind. While Ailen and Rowan just crushed my heart at the end. Cuz damn bro, the angst for me personally was heavy. Lysandra is bestest girl fr tho because even with being upset with the decision she followed through with the plan her queen set.

Onto tower of dawn to see how this one is gonna crush my soul. Only thing keeping me going is yren because she’s a cinnamon roll imo.

Hallo everyone!  Tumblr devlog time.

Writing/Playtesting:

Okay so I have still been working on my playtest and am currently finishing up the playtest of Asher's route - about half done with it.

For those wondering why the play test is taking forever, I always do a play test with the auto-voicing on. It forces me to slow down and listen, which helps me hear issues like word repetition as well as typos and things like that. I catch a lot more issues this way than if I try to read it.

A lot of times I'll reach a later part of the game and realise I need a conditional statement based on much earlier content. I find it easier to try to manage that as well as I can now versus later on. Especially with something like an episodic release, I think it's useful to try to catch as much of that stuff as I can at this stage.

So yeah!

I also finished writing and coding all the bonus scenes I mentioned last time.

Art wise I have...

Finished Cim's sprite. She is a minor character who appears briefly in Chapter two. Her sprite is created and coded now.

Other Stuff:

So I got the flowcharts finished and set up and the page functional. I also have set up the unlock statements (Just up to Ch2 of course).

I have coded expressions.

Coded in a ton of button fixes and QoL fixes and stuff like that. Most of that stuff is done. There are only a few small things I want to tweak.

I also made a ton of corrections offered up by an alpha tester who has been going through the game to help me out. So yay for that.

Once I am done with the CGs I will probably release the first episode to beta testers on Patreon. So.
