Over analyzing the Henry x Valter meadow scene because it’s been living in my head rent free

Okay, it seems like I’m not the only one obsessing over the scene in the final episode where Henry lies drunk on a field and Valter (or Walter) picks him up. Walty shippers interpret this as a confirmation of their relationship, while other see this as a symbol of Wille’s freedom. Let’s take a deep dive into both analysis!

By this time we know that Young Royals almost always have deeper intentions with the way things are written and directed. Close ups, props and the order in which the scenes are put are planned out to perfection and rarely a coincidence. This scene came immediately after the Stedrika scene, indicating that Henry and Valter, just like Stella and Fredrika, might have had their own friends-to lovers-story.

The scene is also parallel to Wilmon’s football field scene in season one. In both scenes, one of the boys lays barely conscious in the grass and gets picked by someone who is close to them. For Wille, it’s Simon. For Henry, it’s Valter.

This might be a hint that Walty had their own Wilmon moment and that something happened between the them romanticly.

Another part of the fandom believes this was not a Walty confirmation, but instead an confirmation of Wille’s freedom. Throughout the series, Henry has always interrupted Wille during the most inappropriate moments.

Henry has been a reminder to both Wille as well as the audience that no matter what Wille did, he would always have eyes on him. He would always have a responsibility he couldn’t just give up. Henry’s passing out could be an indication that he’s not needed anymore, because Wille is now free. Free from the responsibility, free from everyone’s eyes, free from the burden.

The story telling in Young Royals has always been limited to the perspective of five characters: Wille, Simon, Felice, Sara and August. Even if we followed the storyline of other characters, like Stella and Fredrika, it was always told through the perspectives of the main five. This is one of the few scenes, if not the only one, that doesn’t do so. Maybe the writers/directors wants the audience to know what the other characters don’t know yet, which is that Wille is about to give up the throne.

What do you think the meadow scene meant? Walty confirmation or Wille’s freedom confirmation? Why wasn’t it filmed through any of the main five’s perspectives? Feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions!

(Side note: can we just appreciate how beautiful the entire scene is? It looked like an entire renaissance fairy painting! Minus the bottle of alcohol lol).

For this New Year's Day and last day of Faves Fest, I want to celebrate my favourite non-Wilmon ship by reposting the holiday chapter of my S1 longfic. You don't need to have read the whole fic to enjoy it!

At this point of the story, Henry and Walter's connection is shifting from platonic to romantic, but Henry hasn't figured that out yet. The fic is a very slow burn because their friendship deserves to shine first, and also because Henry is a confused ace burdened by his parents' expectations on his future marriage who has never fallen for anyone before.

So get ready for some oblivious pining, physical affection, holiday and party feels, and playing in the snow!

There are two types of walty fans:

1. The fans who saw the meadow scene and went “yeah that means they’re canon”

And

2. The fans who left the season thinking they were brothers??? For some reason???

I don’t even know where the second type of walty fan came from but apparently this is a common misconception?

This has probably been said before but whatevs. As a casual Walty shipper, I feel like Walter would regularly call Henry Hen as a nickname, but Walter’s the ONLY person that’s allowed to call him that. Like anyone else who tried calling him Hen would get immediately corrected, because that’s Walter thing and no one else’s. And they would get defensive if anyone ever questioned them on it.

just saw a (wonderfully crafted and thought out, no judgement or hate here) post about henry and walter which essentially talked about how they are heterosexual parallels or whatever and reading that was just wild bc its easy to forget that walty is in fact not canon and they barely even have any real scenes in the show at all and almost everything i think i know about them is made up

i recently came back from a trip and i saw an interaction at a rest stop and it just stuck in my head cus it was soooo walty coded

basically as i was walking in, a group of friends were walking out

and two boys linked arms and started skipping together

and the girl behind them was just like “NO NO THEY ARE NOT WITH ME THRY ARE NOT WITH ME!”

it was so funny

but yes it was henry and walter and the girl was prolly stella lmaooo

On their camp-out night the boys at Forest Ridge are huddled around a fire toasting marshmallows. Wille has one arm cautiously around Simon's waist, sitting with a determined look on his face like he was willing to fight anyone who so much as mentioned it.

On the other side of the campfire, Walter is shivering horrendously having not brought enough warm clothes for the particularly frosty evening. Henry had tried to get him to move closer to the fireplace several times but Walter complained that the smoke in his eyes and lungs was way more annoying than being a bit cold.

"Why are we out here anyway? Göran and his fucking bonding ideas can go get absolutely stuffed if you ask me," Walter complains bitterly to Henry.

"You're just sulking because you're cold Walter, you've got to admit this is better than the team building games they had them doing at Sprucewood," Henry replies softly back, his face close to Walter's.

"I'd take running around for a couple of hours like an idiot than sitting out here while my ass freezes off," Walter mumbles back.

Henry is quiet for a minute, before whispering "I can hold you, if you want."

Walter's shivering stops momentarily as he looks wide-eyed at Henry.

"There's no way they wouldn't all notice that..." he whispers back.

"You're right, but I'm not sure anyone would dare say anything given the position the Kronprins is currently in right now." Henry murmurs, letting his knee knock into his roommate's.

"I thought you didn't want them to know yet." Walter says, and he didn't mean for it sound so sad.

Henry sucks in a breath, and moves his hand subtly so it's just curled on Walter's lower thigh. "I know I did. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel like I was trying to hide you. It's just, it's scary, isn't it? It's not exactly the done thing amongst our people."

"You're not wrong about that," Walter grimaced in reply.

"But... I've got a feeling, that with the whole 'the crown prince is queer' thing that's unfolding in front of us, it's about to get a little better. Don't you think?" Henry says shyly.

Walter locks eyes with him, searching to make sure he's sure, and then lets a smile break out on his lips.

"Okay," Walter sighs.

"Yeah?" Henry can't stop the grin spreading over his face.

Instead of responding, Walter gently picks up the hand Henry had resting on his thigh and manoeuvres it around so it is wrapped around his waist. Both of their cheeks flush red as Henry shuffles to pull Walter close to him, his body heat emanating off in pleasant waves into Walter's cold body.

Henry looks up to find Wille's eyes boring through him from across the fireplace. He looks a little surprised, but then just gives the tiniest nod and pulls Simon closer into his side. The curly haired boy just looks up happily to Wille's face before tucking his head under Wille's chin.

...

Later that night they're curled up in their tent, cuddling to stave away the freezing air.

"You know, I can think of a more effective way of heating up," Henry says, waggling his eyebrows.

"Oh fuck off you absolute sap," Walter giggles in reply before sticking his cold nose into Henry's neck, making the other yelp and writhe.

(walty) things i don't think we talk about nearly enough:

henry finding out his dad and walter's mum dated when they were younger because he talks abt walter at home to his parents <3 ("i know because my dad recognized your surname") side note: this means walter has his mother's surname, not his father's

walter having braces in season 1

the fact they sat behind wilmon at the movie night and noticed them holding hands but didn't spread this gossip to anyone else at the school (until after the video leaks)

them wearing matching shirts to rowing practice (before henry quit)

them tallking about a security guard "grabbing them" before wille interrupts lol. probably escorted out from somewhere for being disruptive ? checks out (2x01)

walter clearly knowing Society intel from henry since he's there for the convo abt alexander and the drugs in 2x01

henry cheering for the rowing team in 2x03 and putting his hands to the side of his mouth to yell when walter switches in

them seeming to become genuine friends with alexander in season 3 (the three of them showing up clearly having pre-gamed and with neon makeup in the finale <3)

henry magically having a white shirt for the party after telling wilmon he didn't have any white clothes. walter's ? alexander's maybe ?
