I have really enjoyed reading your analyses of the YR sex scenes. Thank you so much for putting it in writing!

I have a question I think you might be perfect to answer. The cinematography of s2 is obviously really different to s1 and I don't think it's only the new team they brought in. There is a lot more 'shakyness' in the hand held cameras, there is a lot of going in and out of focus, a certain blurryness that underlines the plot.

One scene that really sticks out to me is the kiss in 2.4. As you already mentioned, we don't get to see Simon's face, the angle during the kiss is also a little off, the focus is on Simon's hands, on Wille's shoulder, but never on their lips. What do you make of that?

Hi there! I'm so glad you have been enjoying the analysis posts, and thank you so much for this question!

I have seen some speculation that the increase in handheld photography/shifts in focus constitutes a mistake or indicate that the camera team in season 2 was less talented than season 1. I don't think that's true, for a few reasons. First, that just isn't how TV works. Every scene is shot multiple times, from multiple angles. If the directors didn't like how something looked on the monitors on set, they would just do another take. And the editors and directors have all of those mulitiple takes to choose from when compiling the final edit, so they're going to pick the shots that they like the most, from an acting and also camera perspective. So if they're including a rack focus or shaky shot that's an intentional inclusion.

Second, while there may be an increase in this technique in season 2, it is already an established part of the show's film language in season 1. Specifically, hand held shots are used to convey heightened emotions.

I went back and watched the first kiss scene in 1.2, because I wanted to compare it to the kiss in 2.4 since you mentioned that in your question. There's three significant camera things going on in the 1.2 kiss in my mind. The first is the POV shots, where we look directly into Wilhelm and Simon's faces like we are the characters. This feels very stylized and deliberate. This technique actually appears in season 2 as well! Think about that moment in the party in 2.1, when the boys see each other and they're backlit by the swirling party lights. So not everything in season 2 is cinema verite; there are intentional moments of framing, slow motion, etc.

Going back to the kiss in 1.2: there's a wide shot, where you can see both Wilhelm and Simon in profile. This shot feels removed and uncomfortable, and it captures the anxiety that Simon is feeling when he's not sure if Wilhelm is going to return the kiss/his feelings. But then Wilhelm pulls him back in, and he does return the kiss and the feelings, and the camera becomes much more fluid as we're looking over Simon's shoulder as he kisses Wilhelm. As soon as the emotions swell, the camera becomes reactive, moving along with the characters. This happens in other scenes in season 1, like in the fish scene in 2.5 which I discussed in the last post.

With that in mind, I'd like to propose that the more hand held camera work is a deliberate choice used to convey heightened emotions in the Young Royals universe. And season 2 has much more heightened, strong emotions than season 1. The stakes are higher than the first season, and even when the boys aren't together they are always feeling intense emotions about each other. The kiss in 2.4 is one of the zeniths of that frustration and desire. There's a desperation in their reunion, and I think the way the camera comes in so close and switches focus adds to that. It's the third person in the kiss: breathless, excited, not sure what to focus on because it wants to feel all of the things at once.

This is also extremely nitpicky, but I think the reason that their lips are sometimes out of focus is because they're not the visual anchor of the scene. Their noses/forehead are the first things that touch, and I think the camera prioritizes keeping the focus on that part of their faces through the scene. Not that their noses are perfectly clear the entire time, because of what I mentioned above. But I did want to point out that just because they're kissing, that doesn't mean that their lips are by default the most important things in the frame.

As you mentioned, I do wish that they had included more Simon coverage in the run up to the kiss. But I think the decision to keep the camera on Wilhelm was a probably deliberate choice to center his reaction in that moment.

The other way the hand held camera works super well in season 2 is capturing movement, and sometimes a combination of movement and intense emotions, like when Simon completely whiffs Wilhelm with the ball in gym class earlier in 2.4 (this is possibly my favorite 30 seconds in season 2; righteously angry Simon is one of my favorite Simons). There are wide establishing shots that are pretty stable and set up the layout of the game they're playing, interspersed with more hand held closeups on Simon that capture his anger and the effort with which he throws the ball.

I think the choice to increase the amount of hand held work in season 2 really works. It highlights the intensity of what our characters are feelings and breaks down the distance between character and viewer. Obviously your mileage may vary depending on what kind of style you like, but I do think this was an intentional and well crafted part of the season.

anyway I'm back with more thoughts about color and gold lighting in yr because the hyperfixation is STRONG today

we mostly see golden lighting appear when wille's truly happy. the three most memorable examples of this are the morning after in s1ep5,

the fish scene,

and the valentine's ball kiss,

which has subtler lighting, but when you think about the fact that s1's lighting was mostly dark gold because they were in a little bubble of joy that still had to be maintained by them staying a secret, but here, wilmon are out in public, even if they're away from the party. s2 strays away from the dark golds and blues of s1, like we're emerging from the shadows wilmon were hiding in before. it's also interesting how the colors in s2 started out almost desaturated and cooler

because wille and simon got torn out from the shadows they weren't ready to leave yet, and they split up, so wille's both been outed to the world and away from the happiness simon gave him. but, if you compare the first five minutes of s2 to the final five at the jubilee, the color returns, just as wille takes back the denial - effecively bringing simon back to his side publically, but also taking back the agency he lost after the video.

the lighting isn't present in the moments they sleep together, though, probably because in s1 the 'happy' moment was tainted by august filming them, and because they both thought it would be the last time in s2. one other time is the lucia kiss, and that feels less like joy, but more of desperation and relief at not losing simon.

it feels like gold lighting is a symbol of his joy and contentedness, which makes sense, because he's the main character of young royals, and what he feels affects everything, which could also be a reminder of the influence and power he unknowingly holds as crown prince. the color gold symbolizes luxury, wealth, and power- all the things wille has, but especially when he has simon by his side. gold can also be associated with generosity and compassion, which are notably some of the traits tied to simon's character. gold really is just their color, and more specifically, wille's color.

Something's been bothering me...

And tbh, I didn't even realize it until a discussion in the discord server about a fic AU of Wilhelm and Felice as teen parents (long story) make it finally click in my brain and I need to talk to y'all about it.

Felice and August's relationship has been bothering me ever since I first watched YR and I couldn't figure out why until earlier. The way their relationship progresses and ends doesn't make a whole lot of sense plotwise beyond emphasizing August is a dick, which we already kinda knew. The sex scene makes even less sense if you really think about it. Everything in this show means something. They put so much thought into all the details and the acting and the scenes and that's part of what makes it so good. So what the hell is the point of the sex scene? August is what? A jealous dick? We already knew that and there's other scenes that showcase it just as well, like the argument about the coat. The sex scene serves almost no purpose on it's own. Furthermore, August and Felice are the only couple to get an actual explicit sex scene. All other sex stuff in YR is either mentions of it (Madison and Nils on the table) or fade to black it's implied they're having sex but its off screen stuff like the morning after the football field and fish scenes. So that doesn't make sense. And then their breakup has barely any effect on the plot. Felice gets a little more self esteem, and Sara and August can be together without it being cheating, which granted is important, but also there was no drama between Sara and Felice about it. They could have completely removed Felice and August's relationship and there would be almost no change in the outcome of the plot by the end of episode 6. And as I've talked about before, everything effects everything in this show. It's like a butterfly effect, we don't get something without there being a reason for it.

Therefore with this in mind, I'd like to put forth the idea that there could be a s2 pregnancy storyline for Felice. They haven't really set up an obvious plotline for her in s2. Simon and Wilhelm will obviously be dealing with their relationship, Wilhelm might be doing something about the monarchy and coming out, Sara and August have their thing going on and the video secret between them, but they haven't set much obvious plot up for Felice, which is a bit strange considering she's in the main roster of characters. I'd also like to point out that the Lucia scene where she's having trouble getting into her dress happens after she and August had sex. On a surface level, this scene serves to give her the conflict with her mom and taking a stand by wearing Madison's dress instead. If we consider the possibility that Felice could be a few weeks pregnant at this point though, it takes on a second, deeper meaning of setting up for that storyline.

Maybe I'm just too used to soap operas going for the dramatic teen pregnancy storyline, but I feel like what I'm saying here genuinely makes sense. What was the point of Felice and August being together just long enough to give us the most explicit sex scene in the show, only to break them up without it even affecting Felice and Sara's friendship? Lisa doesn't write things on a whim, not like this, and even though the pregnancy storyline is so cliché for teen dramas, I feel like that's the direction Felice's storyline is heading in. And I think that if I'm actually right about this, if I'm not just reading way too much into it, they're going to do a fantastic job tackling it as usual.

ha thank you, I appreciate the free rein. my interpretation is to do the meme twice for gotham and telltale batman. an optimistic thought says there may be interesting contrasts between the two, but probably not.

my favorite female character: barbara kean. she’s been my fave for ages but lately it has been strengthened in response to people being rude and sexist about her s4 plotline. babs is worthy of the demon’s head, fight me.my favorite male character: bruce. gotham!bruce is my favourite bruce, the inherent insecurity to his path to being a ridiculous crime-fighting furry is so much fun to see, and when he pulls off legit batman shit (like saving a family from a mugger, or evading gordon, or solving a crime), it’s exhilarating instead of mundane. my favorite book/season/etc: until quite recently I was actually a big fan of s1, but some retrospective made me see that actually, gotham has pretty consistently improved, such that s4 is my favourite.my favorite episode (if its a tv show): 2x14, “This Ball of Mud and Meanness”. the culmination of bruce finally finding and confront his parents’ killer was not only really fun to see, they also pulled it off really well with wonderful guest stars for Jeri, Matches and Cupcake – and credit to Mazouz for holding his own against the former two.
