SURGE - Youth Killed It ‘Modern Bollotics’
Review by Sophie Newbery
Release Date: 12th May, 2017
Rating: 5/5
For fans of: Don Broco, Massmatiks, Dead!
Often it's difficult in today's serious alternative music scene to find a band as fun loving yet passionate about music as Youth Killed It. The punk infused alt-rock five piece (formerly known as Under The Influence) have released their debut album Modern Bollotics, an album difficult to compare to any other album out there at the moment. For a debut album, I have high acclaim for the band's fun loving punk rock sound, its polished, confident and clear that the band's past, break and reformation has put them on top form now. These songs are relatable and individual. A high percentage of us can probably relate to ‘Molly’ (the seventh track on the album) and its reference to a special relationship with your cat, even if not you'll be singing along to that infectious chorus. Similarly ‘FUDGE’ (track five) is a brilliant track, a light hearted take on not doing as well as we'd of liked in school, the consequences and having a great time anyway. It's funny, catchy and probably the best song of the lot! ‘Lads in Love’ (track four) is another stand out song, the drumming throughout is excellent and all together sums up a modern love story in a non-over the top way. At the very end of the album you've got a cheery three minute number called ‘Thanks For Coming’ which does exactly that, thanks you, the listener, for coming along and listening. This feels like a very sincere track from which the band show their affection for their audience, which truly is a lovely technique to part ways with the listener. All in all, from the obscure nine second opening voicemail-style track to the sincere goodbye at the end, this album is really very good. You can feel the energy throughout and it really gets you engaged in the songs. It may also be notable that these songs sound like they are made to be played live, it's got a way of making you believe you're in a sweaty underground venue with a pint in your hand enjoying a good old fashioned punk show.
