Age-ists are old…and statistically boring
Dear Age-ists,
How old are you to be considered ‘old’? When should you stop wearing Converse and considering skateboarding as a pastime? Is going out drinking until 2am in your late 30’s or 40’s tragic? Is settling down and getting in your 20’s a decision doomed to fail? Is going back to school, or God forbid, getting braces (that you can finally afford) in your 50’s desperate? It’s the age-old question that often prevents people from doing what they really want to do, or forcing them into situations they don’t want to be in, purely out of fear of judgement.
Society wants us to conform to age-related activities, such as going to university after finishing high school, getting a job in your 20’s while travelling (doing the typical two-year London stint), climbing the corporate ladder in your late 20’s to early 30’s, settling down and getting married in your 30’s, having kids, retiring and buying a campervan and travelling Australia as a great old Grey Nomad. If you don’t follow this path, you are immediately subject to judgement, confusion, or worst…pity. For example, if you are single in your mid-to-late 30’s. Go to any party, work event, gathering or even as you are introduced to new friends as ‘single Jane’, you automatically get a strange, ‘what’s wrong with you?’ look, followed by the ‘you’ll meet someone, and when you know, you ‘know’…it’ll happen, when the time is right for you’, or even worst…. ‘IVF is so common these days, you have plenty of time’. Or, for example, going back to study in your 40’s. It’s bad enough having to sit in class with teenagers who speak to you in a foreign language (lmao, fml, biffles, fomo, snapchat, etc.) while planning their next ‘epic’ night out, while you have to juggle work emails and are so tired from a 9-hour day you can barely keep your eyes open. But, to then have people who speak your language (i.e. the older generations) judge you and wonder why you would bother…not cool and totally BORING.
People who live out of the box and refuse to conform to society’s expectations are statistically more likely to be happier in life and live longer.* Maybe the judgementalists and age-ists should take a leaf out of the books of those people and live life to the fullest by choosing what they want to do, not what others expect them to do. Because…YOLO.
Regards,
Not-so-old 30-something
