Had some pretty intense highs and lows today. I think my brain has broken because I've been working too hard. And also I've just experienced a cascade of difficult things in the past week. I didn't expect Tom's death to bother me as much as it has, which sounds psycho, but I really thought it would be easier because he was so old and we knew it was coming. And yet somehow it's been maybe harder because of these things?
I was not a good parent today. That is going to happen sometimes, and every time it does happen I just I hope I don't do permanent damage. My God, it is just so difficult sometimes. And I am raising a kid who doesn't take it easy on us. He's a challenging kid, and I feel like an asshole for saying it on Al Gore's internet, but it's true.
But I also had a truly delightful coffee with a friend today, and I had forgotten that I could just...have a wonderful conversation with someone I don't know very well. I am almost back to a normal-for-me social calendar where I am seeing both friends and acquaintances on a semi-regular basis. This aspect of my life got completely blown the fuck up between the pandemic, my pregnancies, and then having a new baby. I was isolated and felt completely friendless and like maybe I would be socially alone for the rest of my life. I complained about it incessantly on here, the handful of you who have paid attention (to your detriment, I'm sure!) remember. So it's amazing to finally get some equilibrium back. I'm back to being someone who has maybe three friends, and then I am friendly with a bunch of people, and that is enough for me! It truly is! I'm much happier with this part of my life than I've been in years.
Tomorrow is a work day for me, but apart from one Zoom meeting, my time is mine to structure how I want. This week has rattled me so much I'm very tempted to just...do nothing. But I think instead I'll do some nothing and then challenge myself to just start my first comps essay. Like, just write a page. Write a working thesis. Page through my critical texts, write down some quotes, and then write around those quotes. Be a little chaotic and have as much "fun" with this type of writing as I can. I had a meeting with my advisor on Monday that made me both commit to trying to write as much of both my essays this year as possible, while at the same time finally giving myself permission to take longer than five years to finish this program if I need to, and I will probably need to, and it will be okay.
I think I need a very long rest because I've been working past burnout levels for a long time, but I have small children, so I don't get a rest. So what I did instead was I had a giant meltdown this morning and then got coffee with a friend. I walked all over campus, and then I walked all over my neighborhood. Right now, I feel mostly okay if a little fragile. I'm going to drink some tea and watch TV now. Goodbye.
