Tel Fyr is that way. That way, across there, across the sea, and ze’s almost there, ze’ll reach it if ze just keeps walking. Walking and walking and walking and walking and walking and walking and walking. Ze’s been walking. Ze can walk. Ze can walk. It hurts, and zir knee is weeping and so swollen it’s burst the seam of zir trousers, but ze can and ze has and ze does. But the water.
But the water.
Ze’s so close, so close, so close, and ze just needs to get there, but when ze traces the shapes of spellwork in the air, fragile and fine as spider silk, spellwebs, careful, zir fingers stick. Zir hands are bloated. Zir fingers won’t move the way ze wants them to.
Ze knows why. Ze understands. It’s the disease and if ze keeps going ze’ll be better. But there’s a thudding in zir head that twists zem into knots and tangles into shapes and colours never known before. Ze can’t follow a thought to the end, there’s too much in the way, like the skin on the outside grows inwards, thick and bulbous and distended, blocking the pathways. Blocking zir veins. Can ze bleed, now? Will ze ever bleed again? Will there be an ever? Time is disjointed, now, and ze can’t seem to keep it straight.
The sky is flooding orange and ze’s still standing on the shore, arms raised, failing to cast water walking.
Ze can’t keep track of the time. Ze can’t follow zir thoughts to the place where they end.
Ze can’t find someone to help – ze wants to, ze wants to, please, won’t anyone help me – but everyone runs and ze understands but please, please help me. That’s the only thing that stays, that and the drumming in zir head, dull and persistent, following the sound of the blood in zir veins, like something is knocking against zir skull. It sounds like ligaments snapping, one two three, like something being torn into pieces, percussive. It sounds like a knife on the chopping board back in zir house in the plaza in the Imperial City, like zir mother trying to teach zem to make vegetable soup even though she didn’t really know how, either. You hold the knife like this to dice the carrots, nice and steady, keep your hands clear of the blade. You hold it like this to slice the tomato, and her fingers squished it into a pulp, leaking fluid red like blood, clear like whatever else it is that comes out of zir wounds nowadays.
The sky is purple, now, patterned with stars, and ze is still standing on the shore, arms raised. Zir fingers, thick and heavy, twist again and again in a mockery of shapes only zir muscles remember, trying and failing because ze can’t get zir head straight, because zir hands don’t move like they should. Zir fingers are bulging. Dropsical. Zir fingernails, ze thinks, are greying, silver-white, the colour of metal, or bone, but it’s hard to say, really, it’s hard to see. Ze can’t focus on colours, can’t name them. There are colours in the world ze sees now that ze’s never understood before.
Most of them are red. There’s a lot of reds, it turns out, slimy and dry and visceral, like the manifold drumming in the back of zir head.
The sky is dark and ze needs to cross the ocean but ze can’t with these dim, inflexible hands.
So ze focuses – collects zirself, all of zirself, the original parts and the things that have grown since, even the painful lump on zir leg that makes it pull when ze walks, even the way zir new haircut falls in zir eyes now that ze can’t remember to tie it – and ze casts a different spell. Ze remembers this one without trying, even bloated and cursed and corprus-wrecked, even with zir mind dragging and drunk on drumming. It’s easy as the flick of a wrist, and a bone-handled knife slips into zir palm.
(The bone is wobbly, chipped, incorrectly proportioned. The blade is needle-sharp.)
Ze recognises this as a bad idea – even bloated and cursed and corprus-wrecked – but ze raises zir empty hand, spreads the turgid fingers. The movements are stiff, jolting, irregular. Zir fingers look like sausages. (Minced. Raw.)
With all the care of a butcher, ze jabs the knife into zir thumb.
(It doesn’t hurt. Few things do.) (That is to say, everything already does. Is that not the same thing?)
The knifepoint lances through the swollen skin near zir knuckle. The flesh rolls over it like waves. Ze drops the blade and pinches, near the base, watches the wound begin to leak. (It’s the same strange weeping. Sweet and golden and reeking of rot.) Ze drags zir hand up, watching the flesh roil, the build-up of fluid dripping down zir knuckles, trickling to encircle zir swollen wrists like a bracelet. Ze almost licks it off. Ze doesn’t. It drips onto the sand.
Ze squeezes the rest from the bloating around zir thumbnail, picks up the conjured knife, and positions zir hand again.
By the time ze’s drained each of zir fingers like abscesses (and are they not – is zir whole body not a walking wound) the stars are puddling in the velvet black sky. Ze hasn’t sat down. Zir legs are so lopsided that ze doesn’t know how ze would stand again if ze did. Ze tangles zir hands again, tracing a pattern zir muscles recall even though ze doesn’t, and it isn’t like it’s supposed to be – ze doesn’t move soft and smooth, like spellcasters are supposed to, in lines and loops and curls, zir hands jolt in fits and starts and violent writhes – even with the bloating down and zir fingers not colliding, ze’s still not very mobile and certainly not elegant – but it works, almost, sort of, anyway. The motion’s meaning is right enough, and the world bends beneath zir hands.
Ze leaves the wonky knife, dripping ichor, in the sand, and ze steps onto the frothing surface of the ocean.
Ze’s almost there, so close, almost. Ze’ll reach it if ze just starts walking.

Imagine Dream bring the mega simp he is and Techno just bring completely oblivious
Then just imagine, they are just hanging out together, it's winter so they have scarfs and thick jackets. Dream's face is just blushing, Techno realizes and goes "hey are you alright, are you sick?" And Dream internally is having a gay panic and hides his face in his scarf as he just stammers out "o-oh yeah I'm fine", Techno doesn't believe him so he grabs his face to get a better look and Dream is just dying
Winter in the Antarctic was harsh and unforgiving. Besides the occasional snowstorms wrecking chaos over the icy lands, the temperature also dropped to an almost unbearable level. At least in the eyes of Dream, who despite his thick winter coat and scarf still feels the ruthless cold on his skin. Yet another shudder travels down his back while he rubs his gloveless hands together, trying to warm them up without success. Not for the first time, since stepping out of Technoblade’s warm hoot, he regrets not wearing gloves. He should have really thought ahead before following the hybrid outside to spend more time with him, only to end up watching the man chop firewood while he stood behind freezing his ass off.
When Technoblade said ‘he had something important to do outside’ Dream thought he meant taking care of his million dogs or maybe visiting Philza or something, not chopping wood!
Not that the sight in front of him isn’t appealing… To be honest, Technoblade looks rather hot with his ax in hand and sweat dripping down his face. The way the man pulls the weapon down, the muscles in his arms constricting with the movement and red eyes sparkling in the early morning light is one of the hottest sights Dream has the honour and pleasure to witness. Once again, Dream’s eyes wander up Technmoblade’s shoulders, forest green eyes watch the broad shoulders move under the thin white shirt, analyzing every movement like a hawk hunting their prey. While it’s kind of strange to see Technoblade so unbothered by the cold, Dream is thankful to finally have an opportunity to watch Technoblade’s impressive muscles in action without looking like a creep. It’s not like he could stare at the man while they’re dueling, he would just end up with a sword in his chest… or worse.
It’s not often that the man doesn’t wear his iconic red cloak, so Dream takes the rare opportunity to remember every detail of the usually hidden parts of Technoblade’s beautiful body.
He is so distracted by Technoblade’s broad shoulders that he doesn’t even realize when said man stops moving. An awkward cough catches his attention and without thinking Dream looks up, eyes finding blood red ones. He stares into the red pools like a child with his hand caught in the cookie jar. Guilt and embarrassment overtaking his body from being caught checking out his rival like a slice of steak.
For several seconds no one says anything while the rivals stare at each other. Their warm breath evaporates in the cold air, it’s a stark contrast to the ever-building tension slowly wrapping around them like a thick blanket.
Dream’s sure that his face must resemble a tomato at this point. Not able to bear one more second of the awkward staring contest, Dream looks away, green dots now staring at Techno’s chest instead of his face. “…what?” Dream breathes out, his voice muffled from the scarf wrapped around him.
Instead of answering, Techno tilts his head to the side, red eyes squinting at him, “Hey, be real with me for a moment,” Techno begins, another long breath escaping icy lips, “are you...sick or something?”
Dream’s brain short circuit, every one of his synapses snapping from the pure panic overtaking his body. His thoughts are an ongoing stream of omgomgomgomgomg--- while he slowly falls into the early stages of a panic attack. He can feel his blush intensify, if that is even possible, freckles standing out against the bright red cheeks like stars in a midnight sky. For the first time since stepping outside, Dream feels warm, body almost catching on fire from the pure embarrassment. The break from the bitter cold would be a relieving sensation in any other situation. How could he possibly explain to Technoblade that he isn’t actually sick but simply flushed from watching the hybrid chop wood without sounding like a total creep and freak!?
Simply Impossible!
Taking Dream’s silence has a bad sight, Techno continues, a worried frown overtaking his usually stoic expression, “Your face is all red.” he waves a hand over his own face, “Dream,” Techno sounds so disappointed Dream could cry, “if you are sick you shouldn’t have followed me outside.”
Hiding his face into his scarf from sheer embarrassment, he shakes his head, “I’m- uhm- I-I’m not sick…” he mumbles, unsure if the hybrid could even understand him with how he is burying his face into the soft fabric.
Dream would really appreciate a sudden zombie attack right now. Anything to distract the pigman.
Not satisfied with the blond’s unsure answer, Techno steps forward, large, warm hands curling around Dream’s face. The blond let out a surprised breath at the unexpected touch, eyes widening when his face is lifted out of the soft fabric. No way to escape the strong hold on his cheeks, Dream has no other choice but to meet blood-red eyes once more. He feels like a small bunny under the Blood God’s wandering gaze.
Like a sacrifice ready to meet their demise.
Technoblade eyes pierce into him, sharp like a sword and just as dangerous. Dream shudders under the intense gaze and he couldn’t help but lean into the large hands cradling his face, oh so carefully. Rough hands that usually only know cruelty and the lust for blood, are caressing his face like he’s something precious, something to be loved. And Dream falls under the soft touch like a man meeting the sharp end of a sword in a sweet death. A shaky breath escapes frozen pink lips and Dream closes his eyes, at last surrendering to the man he loved.
Silence fell over them.
Dream wouldn’t mind staying like this forever. Feeling Technoblade’s loving touch for all eternity.
Of course nothing lasts forever and the serene silence is broken by the hybrid once more, “Hmm… you’re certainly burning up and your face is all red too.”
All of the sudden the warm hands disappear and Dream has to bite his lip to swallow down the whine that wants to escape his throat. Green eyes fly open and look up at the piglin, “Wait--- what?” Dream has totally forgotten about Technoblade’s allegation, too lost in their sweet moment to remember anything that happened shortly before Technoblade’s hands found his face.
“Memory problems too?” Techno half-teases, a grin forming around pearly-white tusks, “Now you really need to lie down. Let’s better go inside before your condition worsens.” Techno turns around to lift up his ax which lays forgotten in the snow next to the chopped firewood. He turns back around and takes Dream’s wrist with his free hand, slowly steering the other male towards the small house a few feet away.
Still somewhat lost from the sudden turn of events, Dream lets himself be dragged through the snow without complaint, the ice crystals crunching under their feet with each step. Green eyes fall to the large hand curled around his wrist, and he hopes Techno can’t feel the way his pulse is racing under his skin.
Feeling brave, he pushes his hand down far enough to curl their fingers together. Techno reciprocates the simple touch, a low hum escaping his lips as he tightens his hold around Dream’s hand.
Feeling pleasantly warm in the freezing cold, Dream buries his face into his green scarf and smiles softly, heart soaring in his chest like the sun slowly rising in the distance.
Spring is coming.

HxH OC Fumiko Nakamura Story ~ Ch. 9 - Morning Routine

   Once Satomi was gone you stripped off the remainders of your clothes and did some light stretches and warm ups to work the stiffness out of your abused muscles. It wasn't pleasant, but not overly painful either. You could tell that your body's quick healing had kicked in during the night. The medicine that Satomi gave you would take care the rest of the pain to the point you would feel little more than a dull ache for the majority of the day.
   You gave your self a quick wipe down with the cold wet rag, shivering a little at the chill of the cloth when it went over sensitive areas. Feeling a little more clean and refreshed, you grabbed some clean clothes out of your dresser and got dressed, sporting overalls and a t-shirt once again.
   Your older sisters used to always tease you for "dressing like a boy", but when you made the smart point of how wearing overalls or pants for all the heavy duty outside work you do was just more practical than in skirts or dresses, they ceased their game shortly after. And while you did have a valid point, the truth of the matter was you did, in fact, hate dressing in skirts or dresses all the time. Sure, once in a while was fun when you could simply relax for the day, but those days were few and far in between.
   You tied on your boots and decided to take the "easier" way to get outside, climbing through the attic window. After doing so you walked across the roof to the edge, sat down, dangled your legs over, then scooted the rest of the way off, using the strength in your uninjured arm to catch yourself on the roof's edge. You hung there for a moment until you stopped swaying then dropped the rest of the way down. Your body didn't appreciate the slight jar from the landing, but you easily shook it off as you started walking towards the barn in the dim early morning light.
   The few milking cows your family owned were already awake having become accustomed to the early morning milking routines. You grabbed a clean pail and headed over to your first cow. The milking cows never gave you a problem, so your job went by quickly and you placed the nearly full pail near the barn entrance for Satomi or Rin to get later. Three pails later your chore was done and the rest of the cows along with a single horse, a 12 year old gelding named Blaze, where awake.
   "Okay everyone," you called out to the small herd, "let's head on out." You threw open the barn doors then went back to open Blaze's stall while the cows lumbered past.
   Blaze and you had known each other and worked together for the better part of eight years. For you, he was a very obedient and gentle horse. You cared for him dearly but always made sure to not show to much affection for him when your father was around in fear that he would hurt Blaze to punish you. But since your father wasn't home, you could spoil him a little bit.
   "Hey big guy, " you cooed gently as Blaze bobbed his head and nickered softly to you. As you approached he lowered his big head so you could rub his face. He loved being scratched around the ears and behind his jaw and you were normally more the happy to oblige.
   "I almost lost it last night..." you whispered to him, wrapping your arms around his head and rubbing your face against his forehead, "The voice is getting worse, I don't know how much longer I can keep it caged up..." Your chest and throat began to feel tight from anxiety and your eyes began to burn with the threat of tears, you hugged Blaze tightly.
   Sensing your building distress, Blaze gave you a nudge then lifted his head and started to nibble on your ears and hair. His hot breath and muzzle whiskers tickled your face and neck as he did so causing you to laugh lightly.
   "You're such a good boy," you smiled up at him and scratched a few more times before opening his stall. Placing a hand on his shoulder you guided him to the barn entrance where a step stool was. There, you applied light pressure to his shoulder causing him to stop and stand still. Using the stool you were able to jump up on his bare back. He patiently waited as you wiggled around a bit to get comfortable and took a handful of his mane.
   Since you were planning to lose him with the cows in the western fields to graze you saw no point in putting on all his tack just to have to carry it back. In truth you were more comfortable riding bare back away.
   Using nothing more than applicants of pressure on the sides of Blaze's neck to guide him you and your companion made your over to the western gate. Upon reaching the gate you quickly slid off Blaze and ran over to the gate, unlocked it and flung it wide open. Having had done this so often, Blaze followed you up to the gate knowing what came next. You climbed up onto the fence and jumped back on Blaze's back.
   "Okay, buddy, you know the routine," you said to Blaze's back turned ears. He snorted a response and headed for the herd. Once in position you started to holler and encourage the cows to start moving. When you had them turned to where they could see the open gate they moved quickly knowing that the western field, which had not been used in nearly a month, was now full of thick, nutrient rich grass.
   As soon as the heard was through you dismounted again, gave Blaze another set loving scratches then let him lose to graze and enjoy the day. After closing the gate you took up a light jog to were you had left the tools the previous day and were relieved to see they were still there. Starting to hum a little tune to yourself, you collected up the tools and headed back to the house.
   You could smell breakfast as you approached the front porch and your stomach growled. The little bit of stew you had be able to keep down was long gone once again. Deciding you would put the tools away later, you tossed the pail of tools beside the porch steps and headed inside.
   Walking through the sitting room and into the kitchen you found Rin sitting at the table munching away one some crispy bacon. There were plates of more bacon, scrambled eggs, sliced tomatoes, cheese, sliced bread and a large pitcher of milk. Satomi was stirring a large pot of steaming milk, a process done before the milk was cooled quickly then bottled and put away for the family to use or to take to town to sell or trade. Kimichi was at the sink washing the dishes she had used to cook breakfast.
   Asuri then entered the kitchen smelling of laundry soap having just hung out clothes to dry. She noticed you and scowled.
   "Once the fresh milk is cooled and bottled you are to take them and four dozen eggs to town so you can trade with Mr. Garson for the new boar spear papa ordered. He wants you to bring down a Razor-Back before he returns."
   "Well, good morning to you, too," you replied snidely, crossing your arms under your chest. You were already annoyed with your sister's bossier than normal attitude, but you were also excited.
   Razor-Backs were a species of large pig that resided in the nearby forests. The razor sharp spines that protruded from their shoulders and back were deadly enough, but they were also equipped with anywhere from four to six sets of equally sharp tusks and one hell of a nasty temper. Their thick hides made penetration with a weapon difficult. You had to get them just right in the soft part of the neck then run them down until they bled out. Though, these facts weren't the most dangerous part of razor backs.
   A rare type of bacteria tend to live on the razor back's spines and tusks. A single tiny scratch could be deadly. If left untreated, the bacteria would cause a fever to occur within your body in less than an hour, when this happens you have to be given antibiotics within eight hours or else the fever will start to rapidly rise in temperate to the point of causing organ damage. Continuous lack of treatment usually lead to organ failure and a painful death within 12 to 24 hours.
   You had hunted Razor-Backs safely and successfully before, but always with your father. The thought of doing so alone made your heart rate quicken and the darkness within stir with anticipation.
   "Don't cause trouble already, Sadashi," Asuri sneered, "It's papa's orders. You are to down a razor back and have it skinned, gutted, and portioned out for papa to worth with when he gets back."
   "Yeah, yeah, consider it already done, Asuri," your replied with a sigh as you started to pull out your chair.
   "Hey! Go wash up first!" Kimichi snapped from her place at the sink. You rolled your eyes and sighed as you headed to the bathroom to wash up, muttering under your breath as you did so. Asuri glared daggers at you as you walked by, but you simply ignored her. She hated it when you ignored her.

Oh, hey! You know what I'd love to see? The first time Bucky feels comfortable enough to tell Steve he doesn't feel well /before/ Steve figures it out for himself! Maybe Bucky eats something that disagrees with him and he gets a really gassy bellyache... like he feels super pukey and can feel it all churning around but all that's coming up (at first anyways) is a bunch of air? With lots of supportive, loving Steve?
Thank you for this.  I love this idea so much.
Gas/burps have never really been my thing, but I’m up for branching out a bit.  Hopefully this works for you.
Powers/no powers.  You know the drill.

They’ve decided that Sundays are the days for trying new things.  It gives Bucky a predictable schedule, but keeps him reaching just a bit outside his comfort zone.  This week, the challenge is green chile cheeseburgers.
Steve had gotten the idea from Sam, who’d spent a couple years stationed in Albuquerque back in his pilot training days.  “It has to be the real deal,” Sam had said, giving Steve the URL for the Chile Traditions website.  “Actual chile from Hatch, New Mexico.  None of that mild grocery store stuff.  The spice’ll knock your socks off, but the flavor is worth it.”
The jar of real deal 505-grown and fire roasted green chile had come in the mail on Friday, and Steve’dgone out to buy the rest of the ingredients on Saturday.  Now it’s Sunday lunchtime, and Bucky’s griddling a couple of thick Angus beef patties while Steve toasts fresh-baked ciabatta rolls.
“Smells great, Buck,” Steve compliments as he drags a knife through a block of sharp cheddar.  Bucky transfers the slices on top of his cooking burgers so the cheese will melt.
“Yeah, I think I like this idea,” Bucky replies.  He gives the burgers another few moments in the pan, then moves on to assembly.  The burgers are slid onto their buns, and topped with generous scoops of greenchile, thick tomato slices, and leaves of butter lettuce.  Steve spreads the top buns with mayo and presses them down to complete the sandwiches.  Bucky fills the empty spaces on the plates with potato chips, then takes the food to the table.
“I promised Sam a full report,” Steve says as he sits down and scoots in his chair.  “If they turn out really good, we’ll have to add these to our entertaining menu.”
“Yeah,” Bucky agrees.  He picks up his burger.  “Here goes.”  He takes a large bite, trying to get a taste of every ingredient in his mouth at once.  The green chile is immediately apparent, flavorful and blisteringly spicy at once.
“Good?” Steve asks as Bucky chews and swallows.
“Wow.  Yeah,” Bucky says, “Sam wasn’t lying about the kick.”
“I’m sure,” Steve says, taking a bite of his own.
The second bite brings a slight prickle of sweat to Bucky’s upper lip.  The spice is borderline overwhelming, but good.  The roasted flavor brings a lot to the simple burger.  It doesn’t take long for him to polish off the sandwich and calm down the heat lingering on his tongue with a mouthful of chips.
“So,” Steve poses when he’s cleared his plate and is wiping grease from his fingers, “You say that was a success?”
“Yeah, for sure,” Bucky replies.
“Spicy is a go, then,” Steve muses.  “We can probably expand the menu in a lot of directions from here.”
Bucky makes a sound of agreement as he rinses the dishes and puts them in the dishwasher.  With his stomach full, he’s starting to feel heavy and sleepy.  He’d woken up in the middle of the night again, and the lack of sleep seems to be making itself known now.  Bucky stifles a yawn as he transfers the oily frying pan to the sink.
“Getting tired?” Steve asks.
“Hm.  Yeah,” Bucky admits.
“I’ll finish up with that, if you wanna lie down for a while.”
“I can do this,” Bucky says, squirting dish liquid into the pan.
Steve materializes behind Bucky and takes the sponge from his hand.  “Go take a nap,” Steve says.  He kisses the side of Bucky’s head.  “I can come bother you in a little while, if you want.”
“That, uh, that might be nice,” Bucky says.  Steve playfully shoves him out of the kitchen, and Bucky climbs the stairs, enters the bedroom, and drops onto the bed.
Bucky wakes suddenly, and at first he’s not sure what’s jarred him back into awareness.  His mouth tastes weird, and sweat’s prickling up between his eyes.  He pushes himself up, first onto his stump arm, then to seated.  Nausea hits him like a runaway train, and the accompanying vertigo almost throws him back to the mattress.
No.  He can’t be back to this.  It’s been years now, plural, since his body stopped violently rejecting everything he ate.  Sure, the odd bad taste or off texture will mess with him sometimes, but a fucking burger shouldn’t cause problems.
Expansive heat is rising in his throat, and Bucky can’t get his feet on the floor fast enough.  He’s resigned to spraying the bedspread with undigested stomach contents, but all that comes is a long, dry belch that he instinctively hides behind his fist.
It’s odd and painful all at once.  Bucky feels his stomach sloshing of its own accord.  He gets shakily to his feet.  He feels the urge to gag pressing into his chest, and Bucky tumbles into the ensuite, only making it to the sink before a combination of dry heave and burp erupts from him.
Aside from feeling awful, Bucky’s confused.  This is different.  This isn’t his stomach refusing to digest food.  This is his body calling things off mid-process.  It’s something he doesn’t remember dealing with, if not ever, then at least in such a long time that he’s thoroughly out of his depth.  He should lie back down. Maybe in front of the toilet.  Bucky’s sure he’s going to be ill, he just doesn’t know when.
He’s on the point of using the towel rack to lower himself to his knees when sharp pain flashes through his abdomen.  Bucky leans into the wall with his arm around his stomach.  Once he can breathe again, he turns and heads downstairs.
Steve’s at the kitchen table making an attempt on a crossword puzzle.  He hears Bucky come down, and he doesn’t look up from the newspaper when he says, “You didn’t sleep very long.”
Bucky takes a deep stabilizing breath.  “Stevie…”  He swallows hard against the pressure in his throat.
Steve looks up, his brows furrowing as his eyes alight on what Bucky assumes is his colorless countenance.
“I don’t feel good,” Bucky murmurs.  He presses his fingertips to his lips, hoping that whatever’s churning inside him will stay put for at least a moment.
Bucky doesn’t see Steve move, but he’s suddenly being whisked down the hall into the bathroom as, “Ok, hold on just a sec, almost there,” sounds in his ear.
Steve gingerly deposits him in front of the toilet and gets the seat up, then Bucky lurches forward with the force of a massive empty retch.  He has a second to gasp for breath before a mortifyingly loud burp follows, bringing an acidic taste, but still only air.
“Ah, fuck,” Bucky breathes, trying to spit out the saliva that’s pooling under his tongue.  “I’m sorry,”
“You’re ok.  Just ride it out,” Steve intones, tracing his fingers down Bucky’s spine.
Another spasming dry heave comes up, and Bucky clenches his stomach muscles, pushing with his throat to goad his stomach contents to just come up.  The next contraction ends in a wetter-sounding belch. Bucky’s ready to stick his finger down his throat and just get it over with, but Steve grabs his hand before he can move far enough to do anything.
“It’ll happen on its own,” Steve soothes.  “You’re doing fine.”
Bucky braces his stump arm on the toilet seat and breathes raggedly.  His back arches and a small splash of fluid hits the toilet water.
“There, ok, you’re ok.”  Steve brushes Bucky’s hair back from his face.
Another tremendous heave bursts forth with rush of thick fluid that’s horribly bitter and still slightly spicy. It’s too much to breathe around, and Bucky almost chokes on it.
Two or three more waves come up, forceful enough to splash back up onto the toilet seat.  “Alright,” Steve murmurs.
Bucky pants.  There’s still mucous clinging to the sides of his throat, but he’s so exhausted that he’s afraid he’ll pass out if he tries to hack it out.
“That was, hm,” Steve sighs.  “Are you…do you feel a little better?”
“I, uh, I guess,” Bucky says weakly, wiping his mouth on his stump shoulder.  “Jesus.  That was…”  He breaks off with a groan.
“Yeah.”  Steve reaches up and offers Bucky the hand towel.  “Think maybe the food didn’t set with you so well after all.”
“’S an understatement…” Bucky exhales.  He swipes the towel over his face and accidentally sets his elbow in something wet on the toilet seat.  “Fuck.”
Steve takes the towel back and sees to cleaning Bucky up properly.  He’s still slightly nauseous, and tiredness makes his head and limbs almost too heavy to move.  Steve feels his clammy forehead.
“No fever.  But I didn’t really expect you to have one anyway,” Steve says.  “Is it just your stomach?”
“Kind of my head now, too,” Bucky whispers.  “Fucking tired.”
“Feel like you want to go back upstairs?  Lay back down?”
“Yeah.”  The nod makes Bucky’s head swim.  “You’ll stay?”
Steve drops the towel into a corner of the small bathroom and negotiates Bucky to his feet.  “’Course I will.”

Pixie Dust - Chapter 14
In which there’s more awkwardness, Belle and Gold are dorks, and there’s an unexpected visitor.

Belle lay in the dark for a long time, her hands behind her head, listening for the smallest sound that might mean he had gotten home safely.  Eventually she fell asleep, but she woke often, and at some time after four she heard his key in the door and the sound of his feet on the stairs.  She felt herself relax a little; he was home, at least.  The shower started to run, a faint hissing sound of water, and she turned onto her side and tried to settle back into sleep.  Images came to her unbidden, formed from her own memories of his mouth and hands on her, but with some faceless woman in her place, and she wrapped her arms around herself, squeezing her eyes shut as though that would make the visions fade.
She slept poorly, waking up with a start at seven-ten, and dragged herself out of bed to make much-needed coffee.  There was silence from Gold’s room, but she assumed that he had class that day, so if he didn’t get up in half an hour or so she would have to wake him.  How the man coped on three hours sleep a night was beyond her; she already felt as though she’d been hit by a train and she had the option of going back to bed when he left the house.
He must have set himself an alarm, she thought, because he padded downstairs already dressed as the clock ticked towards seven forty-five.  He looked tired, his eyes shadowed and his cheeks hollow, but he returned Belle’s smile of greeting.
“Hey,” she said, pushing the coffee pot towards him as he sat down opposite her.  “I made coffee.  Thought you could use it.”
“Thank you.”
He poured some, strong and black, and sat with his hands wrapped around the mug, staring into it.  Belle watched his hands, long fingers opening out and closing in turn around the hot cup.  Needles of pain scratched at her as she thought about what he had been doing with those hands, and she firmly told her brain to shut up.  It was none of her business, and he was tired.  She put her head to the side.
“Would you like breakfast?  I could cook some eggs…”
“Coffee will do.”  He sent her a brief smile.  “Perhaps two cups.”
She returned the tiny smile, and there was silence for a moment as they sipped their drinks.
“I heard you come in,” she said.  “Around four-thirty, was it?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” he said, and she shook her head.
“It’s okay, I was drifting in and out.  New bed, old house, weird noises...”  Terrible thoughts.
There was more silence.  The tick of the kitchen clock seemed very loud.
“I’m glad you’re safe,” she said then, and Gold looked up at her, his eyes softening.
“It was a client I knew,” he said gently.  “Nothing to worry about.”
“Oh.”  She ducked her head, feeling awkward.  “You have - you have - regulars?”
He gave her a long look over the top of his glasses, steam from his coffee fogging the lenses a little.
“Yes, a few,” he said finally.  “You were one, I suppose.”
Her breath caught in her throat, a painful lump, and his mouth flattened.  He rubbed his eyes, thumb and finger rolling back and forth over the lids.
“I’m sorry, that was insensitive,” he sighed.  “It’s been a long night.”
She nodded wordlessly, concentrating on her coffee.  Gold drained his cup, setting it down on the table.
“I should get to class,” he said.  “I’ll try to get out early tonight.  Sometimes Principal Spencer calls an impromptu staff meeting, but I’m hoping the fact that it’s forecast for snow will put him off.”
“If you’re going to be late, just let me know,” she said.  “Class, or - well, or any other reason.”
“I won’t have another night’s work this week,” he said.  “I requested one only.  That’s it, I promise.”
Belle finally raised her eyes.  He was watching her with an anxious look on his face, and she shook her head with a sigh.
“It’s none of my business,” she said.  “I just worry about you, that’s all.”
“There’s really no need,” he assured her.  “The other night - well, it won’t happen again.”
You can’t know that.
Aloud she said: “I’m sure you’re right.  And besides, your work is nothing to do with me.  I’m just glad you’re okay.”
“Thank you, Belle.”
His smile was genuine, and he pushed to his feet, going to the hallway to pull on his coat.  She heard the jingle of keys, and a final farewell, and then the door closed behind him, leaving her sitting in silence.
After drinking a second cup of coffee, and telling herself over and over again that it was none of her business, Belle dressed in her workout gear, a light jacket over the top and a hat pulled down over her ears.  There had been no snow, but the air felt heavy, as though a storm was coming, and the temperature was below freezing.  She donned gloves and made her way out into an overcast morning, frost crunching beneath her sneakers.  There were winding paths leading out into the woods, frequented by dog walkers, and she picked her way along pine needle-strewn trails, the air cold and sharp in her lungs and the sound of birdsong filtering down through the pine trees.  An hour later she found her way back into town, and jogged along the street to Granny’s, feeling as though her head had cleared a little.
“Hey.”  Mulan greeted her with a wide smile as she passed with two plates of pancakes on a tray.  “You want breakfast?”
“Just tea, thanks,” said Belle.  “I’ll make myself something when I get home.”
“I’ll get it,” called another woman, a mass of unruly red curls bouncing around her shoulders.  Belle looked after her curiously, hearing an accent similar to Gold’s on her tongue.  She slid onto a chair, using her fingers and thumbs to massage tight thigh muscles with a kneading motion.
“How are you settling in?” asked Mulan, pausing with a tray of stacked dirty plates, and Belle smiled up at her.
“Okay,” she said truthfully.  “I managed to get some of my things, so I don’t look like a waif.  I feel a little better.”
“Good.”  She shifted the tray to her other arm.  “You think you’ll be here awhile?”
“I - I don’t know…”  Belle pulled a face.  “There’s only so long you can depend on someone’s generosity, right?  I don’t want to outstay my welcome.”
“Yeah, I hear you.”  Mulan put her head to the side.  “Although, if you’re gonna be here for a week or two, do you want to come out for a drink some time?  A few of us go to the bar downtown.  It’s called the Rabbit Hole.”
“It’s a dump,” interjected the redhead, who had returned with Belle’s tea.  “But the only place other than Granny’s where you can get a drink.  Just don’t believe the bartender if he says he loves you.  Which he will.  Tries his luck with everyone, that one.  Even with us, the poor deluded bugger.”
She grinned widely, and Mulan cast an amused look at her.
“This is my girlfriend, Merida,” she said.  “Merida, this is Belle.”
“Pleased to meet you, Belle,” Merida said warmly.  “What brings you to Storybrooke?  You have family here?”
“Just a friend,” said Belle.  “He’s letting me stay with him until I get on my feet.  Although I did find out that my best friend’s grandmother actually owns this place.”
“Oh, you know Ruby?”  Mulan’s eyes widened, and she shared a delighted look with Merida.  “We haven’t seen her in what seems like forever!  How is she?”
“She’s fine.”  Belle took a sip of her tea.  “She may be coming up this weekend, so if she does, we’ll come and visit.”
“Granny misses her,” added Merida.  “She doesn’t say so, but she does.”
“I’ll tell her to get her butt over here, then,” said Belle, with a grin.  “She always mentioned her Granny being in Maine, but I never realised it was here until she told me.  Small world.”
“Merida!  Mulan!  We have customers!”
A sharp, somewhat irritated voice sounded from the kitchen area, and the two girls rolled their eyes and shot Belle apologetic looks before trotting off to collect plates and take orders.  She finished drinking her tea, feeling a little more of her anxiety drift away as she relaxed.  Storybrooke was already starting to feel like home.
Once she had finished her tea, and paid, Belle made her way home for a hot shower and some breakfast.  She then curled in a chair with one of the books that she had slid from the shelves in the lounge.  At least that night’s dinner was already to put in the oven, and so she spent a lazy day in the house, reading and relaxing, before hearing Gold’s key in the door at four-thirty.
Her first thought was that he looked tired, his eyes heavy and his tread weary.  But he smiled at her and asked how she had spent her day, and she sat him down and poured him a glass of wine and chattered about the diner, and the people she had met, and the book she was reading.  He seemed content to let her take control, and so she turned on the oven to heat the lasagne, and began preparing a salad, taking sips from the glass of wine she had poured for herself.
“You look tired,” she said quietly, glancing over her shoulder, and he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“It hasn’t been the easiest week, all things considered,” he admitted.
“Well, at least tell me you’re going to relax tomorrow,” she said, slicing tomatoes.
“Perhaps.”  He was silent for a moment.  “Perhaps on Sunday.”
She glanced at him again.  “Why?  What happens tomorrow?”
There was more silence, and she swept the cut pieces of tomato onto the blade of the knife and dumped them in the bowl of salad leaves.
“Belle, do you remember when I asked you how you wanted to proceed?” he asked.  “And you said that you wanted a divorce?”
She sighed, putting the knife down.
“Yeah,” she said quietly.  “Yeah, I really need to get moving on that.”
She turned to face him, leaning back against the worktop, and he was watching her with a carefully neutral look on his face.
“You can wait until you’re ready,” he said, and she shrugged.
“I’m ready, I’m just - I guess I don’t really know where to start.  It’s going to get nasty, I just know it, and right now it all seems so…”  She lifted her hands, palms outward, and wiggled them as she pulled a face.  “I guess I need a lawyer.  Of course I have no money except what he gives me, so I don’t even know how I’m going to pay for it.”
“I can get you a lawyer,” he said, and took another drink.  “Would you be prepared to come to Boston with me tomorrow?”
Belle swallowed hard.
“Boston?” she asked, a little faintly, and his mouth flattened.
“I’m sorry, it’s just - well, decent divorce lawyers are a little thin on the ground here in Storybrooke,” he said, and she nodded.
“I guess,” she said slowly.  “But - tomorrow’s Saturday.”
“I can still get you an appointment,” he said.  “If - if you want.”
She gazed at him for a moment.  His eyes were filled with something she couldn’t quite make out.  Concern?  Perhaps worry that he was upsetting her.  She sent him as much of a smile as she could manage.
“As long as there are no detours when we’re in town,” she said.  “I don’t want to risk running into Gaston.”
“Of course.”  He returned the smile.  “I’ll make the call.”
Belle stared up at the tall, sleek building of steel and glass that housed the offices of Cole, Feinberg & Levinson, chewing her lip.  The touch of Gold’s hand on the small of her back lent her some strength.  It was the first real contact they had had for days, and she wished things were less awkward between them.  Of course, in the circumstances it was unlikely things would improve.
“This - this is the firm that Gaston was considering giving some business to,” she said thickly, and Gold nodded.
“It hasn’t come to that.  As I understand it he decided to stick with his current firm.  You won’t meet him by accident in the building.  Especially not today.”
“Good.”
She took a deep breath, squared her jaw, and marched into the building, the automatic doors whooshing open as she approached.  Gold stuck close by her, and the receptionist looked up with a wide smile as she approached the desk.  To her credit, her gaze flicked only briefly to Belle’s bruises before meeting her eyes.
“I have an appointment,” said Belle, her voice sounding oddly hollow in her ears.  “Two o’clock.”
“Let me see…”  The receptionist studied the screen in front of her.  “Mrs Legume?”  At Belle’s nod she picked up the telephone and dialled a number.
“Mrs Legume is here to see you,” she said, and put the phone down, turning back to Belle with a smile.  “If you could just wait a moment, please.”
Belle nodded stiffly, feeling anxious, and stepped away from the desk, wanting to pace.  The touch of Gold’s hand on her shoulder was soothing, grounding her a little.
“Don’t be nervous,” he said softly.  “It may not have seemed so at the party, but she really is very good at her work.  You’ll be in safe hands.”
“I don’t doubt it,” she said, in clipped tones, and they both turned as the elevator pinged.
“Darling!”
Carrie Feinberg swept into the reception, arms wide, wearing an elegant black dress with a pencil skirt and fitted jacket.  She kissed Gold on both cheeks, leaving lipstick prints on him, and turned to Belle, kissing her too, as though they were friends, and she wasn’t Gold’s client.  Belle could feel her insides wanting to shrivel up at the thought of it.  The woman smelt of cigarettes and Chanel, and she took a step back, looking Belle up and down with a glint of interest in her eyes.  Her study of the bruises took a little longer than the receptionist’s had.
“Come on up,” she announced.  “There’s almost no one here today, so we won’t be disturbed.”
“I should - I should leave you to it,” said Gold, gesturing at the glass doors behind them, and Belle shook her head.
“No, it’s okay.  I’d like you to come up.”
“Yes, don’t be so antisocial,” chided Carrie.  “It must be at least three weeks since I last saw you, you bad boy.  Indulge a girl!  I’ve half a mind to take you out and drink you under the table.”
Belle closed her eyes momentarily.
“You’d be on your feet far longer than I,” he said dryly, but there was a gleam of amusement in his eyes.  She flapped a hand at his jeans and boots.
“I’ve never seen you looking so casual,” she remarked.  “Like a slightly rugged and secretly perverted physics teacher.  I like it.  Come on up, both of you.”
Gold hesitated, looking between her and Carrie, but then nodded, following them to the elevator.  The walls were slightly textured, the colour of graphite.  Flat round buttons grouped in pairs extended in long rows in a black glass panel.  They were edged in chrome, and Carrie pressed for floor 32 with the tip of a short, manicured fingernail, coated in deep red lacquer.
Belle sighed inwardly.  She had agreed that Carrie was the best candidate for the job, given that she had an excellent reputation and had said that she could wait for payment, but God, this was awkward!  She tried not to think about what the two of them had gotten up to, although the incident with the closet kept sneaking into her mind and causing mischief, and she was glad that Gold was the soul of discretion when it came to his clients.  That was a conversation she was most certainly not interested in having.  
“Thank you for making the arrangements to see Belle today,” said Gold quietly, and Carrie gave him a look of surprise.
“Oh, the building is always open for those who want to work every godforsaken hour there is,” she said airily.  “I’ll take Monday off instead.”
Her office was large and bright, the furniture black leather and chrome and pale, polished wood.  Four squat leather armchairs were set around a low table, and Carrie turned on the balls of her feet, pressing her hands together.
“Drink?” she asked.  “I could call for tea, but perhaps you’d prefer something a little stronger.”
“Tea’s fine,” said Belle, and Carrie waved her to one of the squashy armchairs and went over to her desk to order the tea.  She picked up a notepad and pen, striding over to sit opposite and crossing her long legs.
“I don’t know how I’m going to pay you,” said Belle immediately.  “I don’t really have any money.  I left my purse at the house - I mean my old house - with all my credit cards…”
“Oh, don’t you worry about that,” said Carrie with a sniff.  “If I can’t get some alimony out of your husband while this is all going through I’ll hand in my notice tomorrow.”
She flashed Belle a grin, and Belle felt herself relax just a little.
“Now,” she said briskly, sitting opposite.  “I only know what I saw from my own observations at that delightful party at your house.  Why don’t you tell me about your husband, and why you want to divorce him?”
Belle closed her eyes.  The party seemed so long ago.
“We’ve been married four years,” she said.  “I was too young, but he wasn’t right for me anyway.  We’re very different people.  I - I want to be a teacher, and he wouldn’t let me.  Said it was beneath me.”
Carrie sniffed, but nodded at her to continue.
“He had been having an affair,” she said, and swallowed. “Eight months or so.  I found out about it when his girlfriend called the house to tell me.  He swore he’d stop, but he didn’t.  And…”  She cut off, and Carrie looked at her expectantly.  “And I - I hired an escort.”
“To get back at him?”
“Partly,” admitted Belle.  “But also because I - well, I was lonely.”
Gold’s fingers twitched, as though he was going to reach out to her, but he didn’t, and she looked at her clasped hands.
“Just the one time?” asked Carrie.
“Twice,” said Belle quietly.  “Gaston knows.  I told him.”
“Which is where you come in, am I right, darling?”
Gold nodded, and Carrie made a note.
“Will that have to come out?” he asked.  “I have a whole other life away from my evening job.  The two don’t mix.”
“No reason you should have to be mentioned,” she said.  “He doesn’t know your real name, and it’s not as though this was an actual affair, you were a sex worker.  And he’s the one with more to lose, believe me.  I’m sure we can make a deal.”
Belle dropped her eyes again.  The facts being laid out so baldly like that - it sounded so sordid.  She wished she had never married Gaston in the first place.  She wished that she could turn back the clock to her seventeenth year and gone to a different school altogether.
“So your own indiscretion came out,” said Carrie vaguely.  “Let me guess, he was fine with infidelity when it was him doing the cheating, not so fine with you doing it.”
“How did you guess?” said Belle dryly.
She glanced across at Gold.  He was staring straight ahead, as though his mind was elsewhere.  She couldn’t blame him.
“Well, I can see that he hit you,” said Carrie then, making her start.  “Was that a regular thing?”
“No.”  Belle closed her eyes, trying to ignore the memory of that night.  “No, it was - it only happened the once.  I climbed out of the bathroom window and ran away.  That’s how I met Alistair.  On the road out of Boston.”
“Fortunate,” she said, scribbling.  “Did you take any pictures of your injuries?”
“I have them,” said Gold, patting his pocket where his phone sat.
“Good.  Gives me something to wave in the bastard’s face if he tries to play the injured party.”
“How long will it - take?” asked Belle, and Carrie looked up, folding her hands on top of the pad of paper.
“Hard to say,” she said.  “Will he agree to the divorce?”
“No,” said Belle decidedly.  “Definitely not.  Even if he agreed to let me go, he’d never agree to a settlement.”
“Hmm.  Pity.  Would have been the quickest and cheapest option.”  She pursed her lips.  “I suggest filing for divorce anyway.  Irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.  If he contests it, it’ll have to go to trial, but I doubt he’d want the scandal, considering.  Of course you could argue it was his fault due to the adultery and the assault, but that’s likely to take longer and be more expensive.”
“I’ll rely on your advice,” said Belle.
There was a knock at the door, and a young man with a sober expression carried in a tray of teacups.
“On the table, there’s a good chap,” said Carrie, and he set down the tray, murmuring something before leaving again.  She rolled her eyes at his back before turning back to Belle.
“You don’t have to decide now,” she said.  “Sleep on it for a day or two and call me next week.  Just let me take some more details, and if you decide to proceed I can start putting the documentation together.”
Belle nodded, casting a glance at Gold.  He sent her a brief smile of encouragement, and she took a deep breath, ready to take the first steps on her road to freedom.
She felt better for having done something about her situation, even though reliving the worst parts of her marriage with Carrie had been highly uncomfortable, and she was silent for half an hour or so as they drove north, towards Maine.  She had felt bad for Gold, too, and the awkwardness he must have felt sitting with two former clients.  Or was Carrie a current client?  She had certainly seemed very taken with him.  Perhaps she was a regular.  He would never say, of course, and she was determined not to pry into his business.  Gold kept shooting glances at her, his brow crinkling a little as he drove.
"Are you alright?" he asked, as they left Boston behind, and she sighed.
"I'm sorry I got you mixed up in this," she said.  "I truly am.  I know - I know that getting involved in a high profile divorce is probably the last thing you could ever want.  I just hope that Carrie's right, and it won't get to court."
"It'll be okay," he said, and she ran her hands over her face.
"Alistair, you don't have to be so calm all the bloody time!" she sighed.  "I've completely screwed over your life, and I feel terrible about it!  You've been nothing but wonderful to me ever since we met and it's like I've caused you nothing but trouble!"
"Well, you're a good cook, so it balances it out," he said, winking at her, and she let out a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob.
"Please don't worry, Belle," he assured her.  "Things will work out, I'm certain of it.  You don't deserve to be unhappy.  Carrie has all the information to get started on the case now, if that's how you want to proceed.  And you'll have my full support, I promise."
She sighed again, settling back in her seat a little.  It was good that at least one of them was feeling positive about the whole thing.
In the end it took her almost a week to make the call.  Not that she wanted to stay married to Gaston, far from it, but she dreaded the inevitable confrontation.  He had no idea where she was - a quick call to Mrs Potts had revealed that he had been incandescent with rage when he discovered that some of her things were gone - and she suspected that he would hire someone to track her down.  Because of this, she asked Ruby to give it a week or two before she came to visit, and to keep an eye on anyone who might be following her.
“Don’t worry about us,” said Ruby cheerfully.  “If he’s set someone to tail me, me and Archie can drag them all over New England, it’ll be fun!  Archie always says we should do more stuff together.”
“I doubt this is what he meant.”
“Come on!  It’s a great bonding exercise!” she said.  “I can make Gaston’s PI rack up a ton of expenses staking out random houses I visit.  I might even start leaving coded messages around in brown envelopes.”
“Just be careful,” sighed Belle.  “I don’t want you getting in any trouble.  Either with Gaston’s goons or your boss.”
“Okay, I’ll stick to the Boston area during the week,” she grumbled.  “But this weekend we are totally going to the coast to find an abandoned house to hang around.”
“And you don’t mind staying away from Storybrooke a little longer?” asked Belle anxiously.  “I know I have no right to ask, it’s just he’s gonna be served with the papers soon, and I don’t want him having any idea where I am when that happens.”
“Sweetie, your safety is my first priority,” Ruby assured her.  “Besides, I called Granny and explained the situation.  If you ever need to, you have another place to go, okay?  She’ll take you in no questions asked, and kick Gaston’s ass if he comes knocking.”
Belle couldn’t help smiling.
“You’re a good friend, Rubes.”
“I’m the best, and don’t you forget it, never mind how many mysterious long-haired so-called teachers you have stashed around the place.”
“He is a teacher,” said Belle patiently, and Ruby snorted.
“Sure, whatever you say.”
November became December, and Belle found herself, if not exactly relaxed, certainly more comfortable than she had felt.  Gaston had been served with the papers, and Carrie telephoned to say that his lawyers had been in touch and he would not be consenting to the divorce.  
“I won’t repeat what he said to my paralegal,” she added.  “Suffice it to say that I felt a strong urge to march round to his house and wash his mouth out with soap.”
“I can imagine,” sighed Belle, rubbing her temple.  “What now?”
“Now we negotiate,” said Carrie briskly.  “Obviously we want to avoid court if possible, so I just need to remind him that so does he.  It may take a meeting with him and his lawyers.  How would you feel about that?”
“I…”  Belle chewed her lip.  “I could stand it, I guess.  If it gets this over with more quickly.”
“I’ll let you know when I hear from them,” she said.  “I suspect it’ll be after Christmas now before we can set anything up.  He’s getting excellent advice, so I only hope he listens to them.”
“Listening to reason was never Gaston’s strong point,” said Belle dryly.  The sound of the front door made her look up, and she smiled at Gold as he entered the kitchen and mouthed ‘Carrie’.  He nodded and mimed drinking, and she grinned at him.
“Well, there is some good news, at least,” said Carrie, as Gold crossed to the wine rack and lifted out a bottle.  “I’ve arranged for some money to be transferred to your account.  He didn’t want to agree, but his lawyers have made him see sense.  There should be five thousand dollars going across in the next day or two.”
“Oh.”  Belle felt her breath whoosh out, a sense of relief sweeping over her.  “Thank you!”
“That’s just the first payment,” Carrie assured her.  “And don’t worry about my fees, those are also covered.  He’s spitting tacks about the whole thing, I have no doubt, but that’s what happens when you don’t allow your wife to earn her own living.”
She sounded extremely self-satisfied, and Belle grinned.  Progress at last.
“I’ll be in touch,” Carrie added.  “Keep your chin up!  You can get through this!”
“Thank you,” said Belle sincerely.  “We’ll talk soon.”
She rang off, and turned to Gold with a smile.  He was uncorking the wine, the corner of his mouth pulling up at her expression.
“You’ve had some good news, then?”
“Kind of,” she allowed.  “I’ve got some money.  I can pay you back what I owe you.”
“There’s no rush,” he said, taking two glasses from the cupboard.
“I know, but I’d like to pay you while I know I can,” she said.  “I don’t know how long this whole thing is going to take.”
He carried the glasses to the table, sitting down opposite.  Wine poured in a rich, crimson stream, and Belle took a glass from him.  She watched him as he poured for himself, his hair hanging forward a little, the light glinting off his glasses and the first hint of stubble on his jaw, and felt her heart clench.  Staying with him, seeing him every day, had been the most delicious form of torture.  It had taken them a couple of weeks of awkwardness and stepping around one another, which was compounded whenever he had to take a job, but she felt that they were in a better place now.  They were comfortable living together, two lost souls each trying to make their way.  She cooked dinner most nights, and he made breakfast most mornings, and at the weekend they would walk in the woods, mostly in silence, enjoying the birdsong and the wind in the trees and the sharp scent of the pines.  If she hadn’t been in love with him, life would have been perfect.
Gold glanced up at her, and she licked her lips, suddenly nervous.
“You know, if I get a regular payment leading up to the divorce, I could look for a place to live,” she ventured.
He stared at her for a moment, his face expressionless, then sat back, his fingertips tapping restlessly on the table.
“Is that what you want?” he asked quietly.  “Your own place?”
“I - I thought it might be what you want,” she said, with a bark of a laugh.  “I don’t think you were looking for a long term roommate when you took me in, were you?”
Gold smiled briefly.  “No,” he admitted.  “But I find that I enjoy your company.  It’s nice, having someone to come home to.”
Belle reached for her glass, and almost impulsively he grasped her hand, squeezing it gently.  The shock of his touch after so long made her gasp, and her heart began to thump in her chest.  Gold fixed her with his gaze, his eyes warm as honey in the light.
“Please,” he said.  “Please, Belle, don’t feel that you have to leave if you don’t want to.  I’d like you to stay.”
“I - I don’t want to overstay my welcome,” she said, and he shook his head.
“You’ll always be welcome here,” he said.  “You’ll always have a home here.  Who else would stay up until three a.m. just to make sure I’m alright?”  He shot her a stern look.  “And don’t pretend you haven’t been.  I’m not as clueless as you seem to think.”
She smiled, shrugging a little.
“I worry, that’s all.”
“I know.”  He released her hand, sitting back, and she missed his touch.  “I wish you didn’t.  I don’t want to cause you any sleepless nights.”
Belle tried not to think about the fact that her sleepless nights worrying about his safe return were probably on a par with those spent remembering how it felt to have him touch her.
“I’m serious,” he added.  “If you really want to leave, then of course I won’t stop you.  But if you want to stay, I’d be delighted.”
“I can pay rent,” she assured him.  “With the money I’m getting from Gaston, I mean.  It - it would help, right?”
He stared at her for a moment, and his mouth twitched at the corners a little.
“Right,” he said.  “We can - we can discuss it tomorrow, if you like.”
She smiled at him then, and nodded.  What was a few more weeks of torture, after all?  She would have to move out eventually, when her divorce was finalised.  She would find a place in Boston, and go back to college and train as a teacher, and he would be here in Storybrooke, working every hour God sent to support his son.
“Will you visit Neal over Christmas?” she asked.  “It must seem so long since you last saw him.”
“He’s going to his mother this Christmas,” said Gold, with a grimace.  “It’s her turn.  I just hope she lets him come to stay for a week at least, before college starts again.”
“Oh.”  Belle chewed her lip.  “Will he - will he mind me being here?”
Gold looked surprised.  “Of course not.  Why would you think that?”
"I don't know..."  She gave an awkward shrug.  "Maybe he wants it to be just the two of you.  I don't want to be in the way."
"You won't be," he said gently.  "Besides, I've had lodgers before.  It never bothered him."
Lodgers.  Yes, of course.  I'm a lodger, nothing more.  Why would it be awkward?
“So - what do you want to do for Christmas, then?" she asked, trying to shake off her melancholy with a smile.  "Do you celebrate?”
“Yes, of course.”  He grinned at her.  “Well, I suppose we’ll have to get a tree, won’t we?  Neal usually helps me decorate, but as he won’t be here, I’m afraid the task will fall to you.”
“Great!”  She beamed at him, and then frowned at his amused smile, his fingers tapping on the table.  “What?”
“I’m just wondering how someone as accident prone as your good self will cope with putting up decorations,” he said mildly.  “Perhaps I should invest in some bubble wrap.”
“I won’t drop them!” she protested, and he smirked, picking up his glass.
“No, dear, I meant to wrap around you.”
Belle stuck out her tongue, and his smile widened, his eyes gleaming.  God, life was so bloody unfair!
They did get a tree, and Belle managed not to break anything putting the decorations on it, and she filled the house with the scents of baking while Gold was out at work, making gingerbread cookies and rich, dark fruitcake and even - remembering a recipe Mrs Potts had liked - a chocolate Yule log.  It was probably way more food than they would ever eat between them, but Ruby and Archie were coming up for the New Year to stay with Granny, and she planned to have them around for dinner at least once.
Gold had driven to the next town over, which was somewhat larger, in order to pick up some food and drink for the festive season, and Belle was decorating the gingerbread cookies with coloured frosting, which she was finding somewhat frustrating.  Mrs Potts had always been better at the fine detail of cake-decorating, and Belle sighed as the “snowman” she was teasing out of the piping bag looked more like a ravening ghoul.  A knock at the door made her look up, and she wiped her hands on her apron, frowning a little.  Unexpected visitors made her anxious.
The knock came again, and so she sidled out into the hallway, eyeing the door.  There was a dark figure behind the rippled glass, and she chewed her lip for a moment, bouncing nervously on her toes.  It was too small to be Gaston, however, and so she took a deep breath and marched to the door, opening it up.
A boy in his late teens stood there, his brown hair speckled with snowflakes, his jeans stained dark around his ankles where the snow had soaked into them.  He had a rucksack on the porch beside him, stuffed almost to bursting, and his eyes were wide as he looked at her.  Deep brown eyes, that looked so familiar.
“Um - hey,” he said uncertainly.  “I was - I was looking for my dad.  Mr Gold?”
“Oh!” breathed Belle.  “Oh, you must be Neal!  Come on in!”

Can Drinking Okra Water Help Fight Diabetes?
According to research, extracts from okra could help offset damage done by oxidative stress and insulin resistance, and simultaneously improve your blood glucose levels. Those results were attained when scientists tested okra extracts on pregnant rats with induced gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
During the featured study on rats from 2015,1 scientists found okra extract exerted potential antihyperglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. The okra was also associated with reduced damage to pancreatic tissues. In a recent study,2 researchers concluded that okra may improve glucose homeostasis and β-cell (beta cells that produce, store and release insulin3) impairment in diabetes.
Okra, you may know, is a vegetable known as a favorite in the American south for dishes like Creole-style gumbo. The Abelmoschus esculentus (okra) plant, also known as Hibiscus esculentus (being related to the hibiscus plant, as well as cotton), is also called lady fingers because it produces several tapering, pentagon-shaped, fuzzy pods with pointed tips and lots of compartmentalized seeds.4
As an ancient, flowering plant with origins all over the world, okra has several more names: gombo, bamia or bamya in France; bhindi in India, quibombo in Spain and simply “bamies” in the Mediterranean and Middle East. It was probably brought to the Southern U.S. by slaves from West Africa, who often used it to thicken soups.5 In fact, this plant does require balmy temperatures to thrive.
The seedpods are the part of the plant with the most gastronomical interest. As Cooking Channel TV maintains, they can be barbecued, pickled, skewered and grilled, or sautéed. It doesn’t have to be doused in canola or some other “vegetable” oil, coated with flour and deep-fried; you can use healthy ingredients:
“Gumbo is nothing without the okra that breaks down and helps thicken the stew … Okra is often paired with acidic flavors like lemon juice or tomatoes to balance out the earthy, woody flavors … Yankee Okra, or okra sautéed in olive oil with garlic, crushed red pepper, thyme and basil, pairs the flavors you know and love with an ingredient that you will soon be familiarizing yourself with.”6
Okra water is a form of this vegetable that has emerged recently, and it’s gained more interest since it may improve your blood sugar levels. To make okra into a drink, the pods are soaked for several hours or overnight, during which time the skin and seeds will be absorbed into the liquid. Another way is to slice the pods thinly before soaking them, but the resulting beverage may be slightly bitter. Just remember the benefits!
Okra May Benefit Diabetes, Lower Blood Sugar Levels
According to the study,7 “Therapeutic Effect of Okra Extract on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Rats Induced by Streptozotocin,” scientists divided 30 rats into three groups: those with GDM, an intervention group and a control group.
Once the model was established successfully, the study notes,8 200 mg of okra extract was given (orally) to the rats in the intervention group, while the other two groups received only the okra solution and water.
To be precise, it wasn’t extracts from okra alone that scientists used, but an okra solution similar to that used in other studies. A study in 2011, for instance, tested okra’s ability to prevent liver damage.9 Shade-dried okra pods were “coarsely powdered and macerated,” then placed in 3 liters of 96 percent ethanol for 72 hours before being “suspended” in distilled water (which does not dissolve it) before being given to the rats.
At the conclusion, the study authors wrote that due at least in part to the antioxidant substances in okra, the rats’ oxidative stress and insulin suppression was decreased, and along with it their blood glucose levels.
Previous studies have found similar results, including a 2005 study published in the journal Planta Medica,10 in which scientists purified a chemical called myricetin, an antioxidant flavonoid found in okra, and gave it to rats via IV. The result was that the rodents’ muscles were more readily able to absorb glucose, which consequently lowered their blood sugar levels.
It appears okra may support the function of insulin and has even been deemed a potential adjuvant therapy for treating diabetes, whether consumed as a nutraceutical or vegetable.11
Diseases and Disorders Okra — in any Form — May Improve
A 2018 study12 asserts that okra could improve metabolic complications, and if it has a beneficial effect on the pancreas in rats, benefits may translate to humans, as well.
Type 2 diabetes and obesity are the most common endocrine-based metabolic diseases, characterized by hyperglycemia and impaired insulin resistance. Causes are complex and often interrelated, and include:
Sedentary lifestyle
Eating high amounts of processed foods, which typically contain sugar, grains and unhealthy fats

The Nutrient Compounds Behind Okra’s Health Benefits
The featured study isn’t the only one that’s revealed remarkable health benefits of okra consumption. Research on okra may be in the early stages, but as it turns out, the relatively meager information already out there supports what other researchers have discovered in the past decade or so.
For instance, a study in 2011 highlights the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic potential of okra peel and seed powder in diabetic rats.16 Okra seeds have also been used in Turkey for lowering blood sugar levels,17 which further casts this humble veggie in a very good light by listing the science behind many of its health benefits.
The peel is one of the most popular okra parts used to get the medicinal qualities from this little pod. It can be shredded using a lemon zester or grate, and one-half teaspoon is recommended as sufficient to get the desired benefits. Grinding the seeds after drying them is another method, and simply adding them to your smoothie or protein drink is another. Seeds can be purchased either from a health food store or ordered online.
Besides being rich in dietary fiber, which helps keep your system moving smoothly and efficiently and can both cut hunger cravings and keep you fuller longer, there are other key reasons why eating okra can help with any of the above.
Another study indicates that lowered recovery times after a workout and improved energy levels are a few of the benefits of eating okra. As it happens, okra has a particularly high set of nutrients that fight fatigue, one of them being the antioxidants. The seeds in particular contain polysaccharides, polyphenols and several flavonoids, all of which are important in your diet to battle fatigue. The study notes that:18

In this episode: I finally discover my magic and I choose my mentor!
One week after Roxanne first began her training with Makarov, she looked back in her journal while she waited for her breakfast. Reading each entry let her relive what she had learned and gone through that day, and it let Roxanne estimate how much she had grown.
In the seven days she had been training with Makarov, her body had changed slightly. She was eating more as a result of how much more active she was, and her metabolism had sped up as a result of the food she was eating and the strict workout regime. As a result of the better sleep, she had more energy during the day. She also saw improvements in the lessons themselves. Where she had struggled on the first day, now she was capable of falling safely from the standard positions. She had better motor control, more physical strength and endurance, and she could judge distances much better now. Makarov had even started her on the basics of punching and kicking without losing her balance—only one type of punch, and one type of kick, but he'd been very clear that simplicity was her best friend right now, and mastery through repetition was more important than finesse or complexity. To her surprise, Romeo also knew the basics up to that point and a little bit beyond, though his physical strength and endurance were still lower than hers due to his younger age and smaller body.
As to the meditation, she'd improved in leaps and bounds, and Makarov had been both surprised and pleased by her progress. He'd exclaimed that she must be a naturally meditative and introspective person, and by the end of the second day, had expanded her training to include sorting out her emotions and contemplating her motives and reasons. Then, two days later, he had added in the last skill, searching for her soul. Today would be her third day working on this lesson, her seventh hour practicing this skill. Unlike the previous steps, searching for her soul didn't come naturally to Roxanne. She hadn't been able to identify what she was actually looking for or where she should be looking until last night, let alone actually find it.
Closing the journal as the food arrived, Roxanne set it to one side as Mira handed her her breakfast. In the past week, her pre-ordered meals hadn't changed. Breakfast was comprised of two eggs on toast, three slices of bacon, a tall glass of orange juice, and a matching glass of milk. Lunch was a little stranger—water to drink was normal enough, but the food itself was Earthland's equivalent of avocadoes, mixed nuts and dried fruits, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She'd been mildly surprised to see how similar Eathland's sandwiches were to the ones back home at first, but now she relished their familiarity and always saved them for last.
Dinner was a leafy dark green salad with cucumber slices and tomatoes in it for flavor, rich multi-grain bread with butter, and some kind of very abundant meat dish. Snacks were limited to fruits, usually apples, oranges, and bananas because they were easy to transport and digest. There was a bowl of them in her room, and she usually took one or two with her during training, to be eaten during breaks.
Roxanne had, of course, wondered why Makarov had come up with such a specific menu for her. Eventually, she'd realized it was because she needed it—not only was she still growing, but she was much more active than she'd ever been before. And as much time as he was already spending on her, he didn't have any left to spend on designing a new meal each day for her, especially not one that fulfilled her dietary requirements, so a limited menu it was. Plus, it was less stressful for Mira if she always knew in advance what to make Roxanne.
Roxanne sighed, drinking the last of her juice. Glancing up from her plate, she checked the time and found that she still had a little while before Makarov was supposed to arrive. Retrieving her journal, she skedaddled upstairs. Once in her apartment, she put it away in the end-table by her bed and ran back downstairs. Glancing at the clock again, she went over to Lucy, who'd moved out just the day before.
As Roxanne had expected, she had chosen the waterfront apartment and Roxanne had helped Lucy with the move as much as she could. Which wasn't much, considering how full her days were now. Luckily, since Lucy had so few possessions at this point, it was an easy move. But Roxanne had wanted to help, so Lucy had let her wheel the suitcase and hold a few bags while Lucy had taken care of the paperwork.
Roxanne talked with Lucy until Makarov opened the doors. Seeing the guild master's silhouette in the morning light, she waved goodbye to her friend and raced to her mentor, then the pair set off for their usual training spot.
Once at the park, the two sat down in their places under the tree. There was silence between them. Roxanne had long since learned what was expected of her, and she didn't need to be told what to do anymore. She relaxed into her favorite resting position and closed her eyes, focusing her mind first on slowing her heartbeat and evening out her breathing as she banished thoughts from her mind. Then she began to search for her soul.
Roxanne couldn't explain what she was doing. Words were difficult to fit into such a process. But if words were necessary, then "exploring her mind" fit best. With her eyes closed and her mind quiet, she could focus on searching her mind and her body for her soul. On finding that lump of self that defined who and what she was. She'd thought she'd found it while dreaming last night, somewhere in the center of her body, near what Master Makarov had called her solar plexus, but before she could analyze it the alarm lacrima had given the command to wake up. Today, however, she knew where it was and what to search for.
She found it quickly, lodged just below her ribs between heart and stomach. Now that she had time, she could examine it more closely. To her surprise, it reminded her of the souls in the anime Soul Eater. A fist-sized orb hovering in the center of her being. But her soul glowed much brighter than the clear, soft pulse of light and life she remembered from that show. It was a turquoise/cyan color and the edges were a sharp white. It moved slowly, languidly, but it didn't really change shape or position. It kind of reminded her of water in a glass container. Like a fishbowl. She reached out to it, wanting to dive into it to learn more, hoping she'd learn more about her own personality.
The instant she touched her soul she was ripped from her trance. She opened her eyes with a gasp, feeling her heart race with the force of the sudden awakening. It took her a second to figure out why she'd awakened like that, but then she saw that her hands were submerged in a puddle of frozen water. Ice, though it seemed a bit slushy rather than perfectly hard and solid. Her eyes widened, but no sooner had she opened her mouth to call for Makarov than the ice begin to evaporate around the edges. Not melt, as it should have. It began to evaporate, starting at the edges and working its way inward.
"Master!" she squeaked in dismay, not wanting it to vanish before he could see. “Master, look!"
The old man beside her woke up just soon enough to see the last bit of ice begin to turn to vapor.
"You did it, Roxanne!" he cried, grinning in proud surprise and causing her to blush with pleasure at the praise. "You found your magic. Ice magic. Well done!"
"Ice magic? Really?" Roxanne murmured, staring at her hands in awe. "Ice magic. That means… Gray could be my mentor, couldn't he? Oh my gosh!" She squealed, leaping to her feet in excitement. "Gray should be my mentor!" She squealed again as she hopped around in a circle excitedly. "Gray Fullbuster! Yes!"
"Now, now," Makarov chuckled. "There's more than one type of ice-based magic in the world, you know. Admittedly, Gray's skill with static Ice Make is admirable, but you don't have to limit yourself to that. Mm. Though, since he is available, we might as well have him teach you at least the basics. Heh." A cheeky grin, as he stood up. "Teaching someone else might do that young man some good. He's not the hothead Natsu is, but he can be a bit impulsive at times. A student might steady him a bit."
"Really?!" Roxanne stared at Makarov, full to bursting with excitement. She'd never thought that this would actually happen. Gray had always been her favorite character, and now he was going to be her teacher!
"Really." Makarov patted her shoulder, and Roxanne giggled at the fact that he had to reach up to do so. She wasn't even a big girl for her age! "You've found your magic, so it's time for you to receive your guild stamp and ask Gray to train you. Now, you won't be starting on missions any time soon—"
Roxanne stared at him, confused. "But what about you, Master?" They'd barely been training together for a week.
"Ah, well, I'm afraid my time to teach you personally is at an end," Makarov said gently, guiding her back towards the guild hall. "As much as I've enjoyed teaching someone myself again, you've found your magic and it's time to get you a tutor better suited to your specific needs. However, don't think that you're all done!" He waggled a finger at her. "I taught you the basics of basics—there's a whole lot more to learn, and don't you dare start slacking off just because your teacher changes!"
"No, sir!" Roxanne agreed sharply, shoulders straightening. To be honest, she felt a little sad, knowing their training together was going to end. As hard and exhausting as it had been, she'd seen how pushing herself like that had resulted in great progress, and she'd enjoyed this last week with the guild master. She sort of didn't want that to end. "Master? Will—will I still be able to meditate with you, sometimes?" she asked as they turned onto the guildhall's street.
"Oh, possibly," Makarov said, patting her on the shoulder. "If I have time to spare, I'd like to run through a few of your lessons with you again. But I'll make no promises.
Roxanne smiled. "Thank you, Master." That was all she could hope for.
It was hard to walk at a steady pace. She wanted to bolt ahead, run headlong to the guild and throw open the doors, start gushing to Lucy and Mira about her new magic. But she didn't want to just run off and leave the guild master behind.
When they reached the guild, however, she couldn't contain her excitement anymore. "I did it!" she yelled, shoving the doors open and almost stumbling inside in her haste to tell everyone. "I found my magic!"
The guild erupted into cheers and applause. Roxanne stood there for a moment, smiling and bowing before she made a beeline for Lucy, who had been joined by Natsu, Happy, and Gray since she left.
"Congratulations, Roxanne!" Lucy smiled, patting the child's shoulder. "I knew you could it. I'm so happy for you!"
"Nice going!" Natsu grinned.
"Aye, miss!" Happy chimed in immediately after.
"Thank you!" Roxanne beamed. She turned to look at Gray, feeling suddenly shy. He was also smiling, but in an 'I'm happy for you but playing it cool' kind of way. "It's ice magic, so, um—" She took a deep breath, and grabbed his hands. "Would you please teach me Ice Make? Please? I promise I'll work hard and do everything you say!"
Gray blinked at her, stunned into silence, eyes wide.
Natsu whooped and clapped Roxanne around her shoulders. She accepted another round of 'well done!' from him and Lucy, but her eyes were locked on Gray, her breath held hopefully.
He recovered from his shock quickly, but a myriad of subtle expressions flickered over his face. Surprise was still there, and doubt and worry too. She almost thought she saw a hint of a flattered expression, but it was gone into a kind of not-quite-a-smirk too fast for her to be sure. "I guess I'm the best you've got, huh?" he said, grinning crookedly at her.
Roxanne didn't just beam at the acceptance. She glowed. "Thank you!" she squealed, throwing her arms around his neck as Natsu laughed and Lucy smiled and Happy commented cheerfully on Gray's stunned-again expression.
Once Gray disentangled himself, Lucy handed Roxanne a compact from her purse so she'd have a mirror while Mirajane placed her guild stamp. Roxanne watched as Mira set the stamp over her neck and pressed gently. When she lifted it away, the area glowed for a second before the shape became visible. What set it apart from the other stamps was the color. It matched the color of Roxanne's soul, a beautifully brilliant shade of cyan, with just a hint of turquoise to deepen the color.
She smiled as she examined the mark, getting used to its presence, letting the symbol seep into every corner of her mind. The stamp was hers, and she was a mage, a Fairy Tail mage! Her dream had come true!
Unbidden, tears filled her eyes and she had to put down the mirror to wipe them away. She felt someone hug her and she hugged them back as she cried harder. Even back on Earth, she'd always dreamed of being a Fairy Tail mage. It hadn't been even remotely possible, just a silly fantasy, a game of make-believe that her friends and Jacob had played along with. She'd admired Lucy's will to leave the home that trapped her, had gasped in awe at the glory and wonder of magic, had giggled with her friends over the guild's silly antics, had begged Jacob to let her stay up just a little longer, please, just one more episode—
Even when she'd arrived here, becoming a Fairy Tail mage had seemed a distant dream. Something she could work towards, but still not real. The way thin black outlines weren't real, and flawless skin wasn't real, and flying blue talking cat-people weren't real, and magic wasn't real. It still felt like a dream, and whenever she woke up she was surprised again that it wasn't.
She never would have left her friends and family behind for this, and the week of hard work and self-discovery had been utterly exhausting, but…
This was real. It was really, truly really, the proof of it dyed into her skin.
What else could she do but cry?
Behind her, Natsu hung his head, groaning softly. "Again with the crying," he muttered, too low for Roxanne to hear.
Gray looked at him, one brow raised. This was the first time he'd seen Roxanne cry, and he couldn't tell if these were good tears or bad tears so he let Lucy and Mirajane handle her.
The girls glared at Natsu and rubbed Roxanne's back while everyone else watched.
Makarov remained by the door, watching everything. He was happy for the girl. He'd hoped for—expected—another week or two with her as his apprentice, but he wasn't upset that it had been cut short. Roxanne was a fast learner, and she was dedicated to everything she did, so it had only been a matter of time before she became a mage. To be honest, he was almost unreasonably proud of what the child had accomplished in such a short time. Oh, physically she was learning no faster than any other child of exceptional dedication, but spiritually? Her progress had been astounding, and it had taken quite a bit of willpower not to swell her head with praise, or gush about her progress while he was deep in his cups. The vast majority of his children came to him already knowing their magic in some way. Other than Laxus, he hadn't trained too many into discovering their talents himself, and it had been a very fulfilling experience. He felt a little bit of regret that he couldn't continue her education personally, but this really was the best solution.
After a few minutes, Roxanne seemed to pull herself together. She pulled away from Lucy, wiped her eyes, and flung her arms around Gray's waist, much to his surprise. He stiffened and she didn't have to look up to know that he was probably freaking out a little, not sure how to react. "Thank you," she whispered, and almost immediately felt him relax. She couldn't see his face, but he patted her head a little hesitantly, and she imagined he was smiling.
After a moment, Roxanne broke away from the hug, smiling like crazy. "What's the plan, Master?" she asked, and squealed again just a bit. She had just called Gray her Master, and her fangirl mode was in full swing.
Gray flinched a little. "First off, don't call me that. Gray's fine, okay?" He looked to Makarov, who nodded encouragingly. "Finish today's training with Gramps. Tomorrow I'll have a better answer for you."
"Yes, sir!" she replied eagerly, bouncing in place with a grin before racing off to Makarov, still smiling. He clapped her on the shoulder and led her back out of the guild, talking to her about celebratory ice cream after their exercises.
As soon as they were gone, practically the whole guild swamped Gray.
"Way to step up and be a man!" Elfman said in stout approval.
"How's it feel, having a cute girl apprentice?" That was Wakaba, already rosy-cheeked from drinking.
"Looks like you've got a fan!" Lucy smiled. "I thought she was going to explode for a minute there."
"Don't forget to keep your pants on, Gray!" Mirajane reminded him.
"What's the plan, 'Maaaster'?" Happy teased.
Gray flushed at the attention. "Shut up!" Mastering himself, he stood. "I don't know what I'm going to do yet, so I'm going to go figure it out. If you want to know tomorrow, ask me then," he said firmly and walked off, leaving the guild hall in favor of the silence of the city library.
As for Roxanne, her training continued as usual, mostly. She was too excited to meditate anymore, so they skipped right into the physical aspect of the training, and as Makarov had promised, during their lunch break he bought her ice cream as well. Time flew, and before Roxanne knew it the day was done and Makarov was taking her back to the guild.
When she entered the guild hall, she looked around for Gray and was rather disappointed to not see him. For that matter, she didn't see Happy, Natsu, or Lucy either. Frowning a little, she went to the bar and took a seat. "Hi, Mira." She greeted the older Strauss sibling.
"Hi, Roxanne!"
"Have you seen Natsu, Lucy, Happy, or Gray?"
"Gray left just after you did. He said he was going to make a plan regarding your training."
"Oh. Yeah, that makes sense." And now she felt kind of stupid. Of course that was what he was doing!
"Natsu and Lucy left a few hours ago," Mirajane continued. "Romeo was very worried, because Macao hasn't returned yet, so they left to find him, and rescue him if need be."
"Macao's missing?!" Roxanne exclaimed, not needing to fake her shock. She'd gotten so caught up in her training and finding her magic that she hadn't really thought about the fact that she hadn't seen Macao since that first day. "Oh no! Are they alright?" The Macao Arc had begun, and while she knew the outcome already, that didn't mean she wasn't a little worried.
"I'm sure they're fine," Mirajane assured her. "Natsu and Macao are both strong mages, and I'm sure Lucy is safe with Natsu and Happy."
"Yeah." Roxanne smiled brightly at Mirajane, feeling better. "After all, Natsu is a Dragon Slayer. There's nothing that can take him down when someone he cares about needs him!"
"That's so true," Mirajane laughed, handing Rox her plate. "Now eat up. You've got a big day tomorrow!"
"Yep!" Roxanne beamed at her and bounced in place, trying not to fall off of the tall stool in pure fangirl squee.
Just as she was finishing her food, Romeo entered the guild hall. Roxanne smiled and hopped down from her seat, racing over to the little boy. After a few minutes of mutually reassuring each other that Macao would be fine, since Natsu (and Lucy) were going to rescue him, they started a vigorous game of hide-and-seek. Two hours later, after somehow managing to convince Elfman to play the 'ogre' in their game, they were giggling and hiding under one of the big tables when Wakaba called Romeo to go home. The younger boy pouted a little—or was it sulking when boys did it?—but went along willingly enough, noting that he had homework to finish. Roxanne had been surprised by how dutiful Romeo was when it came to homework.
At that point, Roxanne decided that sleep might be the best idea. She wanted to study Fiorean runes some more—she still couldn't read well, though she at least recognized most of the symbols—but she was just so tired that she didn't think she'd be able to keep her eyes open long enough.
Once she was upstairs, she bathed quickly and changed into her pajamas. She stood between her bed and her desk, debating on skipping a journal entry for that night. In the end, she sat down at the desk. How could she possibly not record today's events?

What a day it's been! This morning, during meditation with the Master, I found my soul. It was so pretty! It looked like water trapped in a glass ball, but the glass was actually ice! So when I reached out to touch it, I discovered my magic. Ice magic! Gray has agreed to be my mentor and I'm so excited! I don't think I could be happier. After all, I'm Gray Fullbuster's apprentice!
