#your average online leftist is not watching banjo documentries

it's hard to talk about stuff you like online, this is not a tumblr only problem but it is endemic here, because there's this idea you should ONLY engage with art you're outside the target audience for on an educational basis.
so i don't usually talk about music on here bc if i go 'hey this is one of my fav artists, she was in that smithsonian doc about black banjo players', that signifies, in most left leaning online spaces, that i am putting out my Good Person Points for other people to either one up or pick apart, and not the truth which is: i watch folk music documentaries in my spare time because i enjoy them, and then listen to the artists in the folk music documentaries
i have no real fix for this. people aren't gonna stop going 'if you don't listen to these highly specific artists you hate [insert group we are discoursing about today]' even if you listen to other, more obscure artists in the same discourse of the day group. mostly i just wish i could be enthusiastic about things without people assuming connotations or subtext i guess
#WHICH BY THE WAY#is actually an attitude they discuss IN THE DOCUMENTRY#at least the 'engaging in art by black artists when you are not' thing#and they all had some fascinating things to say there#but like#your average online leftist is not watching banjo documentries#maybe they'd be happier if they did
