Eric B. and Rakim Continue to Hold the Golden Era Torch at Sony Hall

An undisputed Hip-Hop King, Master, Notable, and affectionately the God MC, Rakim Allah moved the crowd in NYC last Thursday (Dec. 27), just five days before the new year. Taking place at Sony Hall, the emerging venue for classic hip-hop, the iconic DJ Eric B. took the stage with his MC and rocked multiple timeless classics for approximately 55 minutes.

Noted for his grand cuts and natty turns, Eric B. graced the stage before he took form in signature style, expression and all. With a Dapper Dan inspired ensemble (that was actually curated by Harlem fashion designer Mel Maxi), the legendary disc jockey showed off his dominant identity triggering real hysteria.

Now, it was time for the God MC to take the stage and he did it with nothing less of style and grace. Rocking his own customized ensemble with an influenced, but not exact imprint of the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths universal flag, Rakim came through and clarified his agenda amid entry. That was to keep it Golden Era: “We gonna take a trip to memory lane tonight...,” Rakim exclaimed.

The Golden Era duo went on to perform a league of classics including “My Melody,” “Move the Crowd,” “The ‘R’,” “Microphone Fiend,” “I Ain’t No Joke,” “Don’t Sweat the Technique,” and numerous other elite hits. Rakim even went on to perform his verse from the Nike sponsored and Grammy-nominated song featuring Kanye West, Nas, and KRS-One “Classic” which moved the crowd into lyrical ecstasy. However, leading up to the class act of performance were a couple of new age artists who honor the vibe of real rap. Datattraction, a new age duo featuring Nate Selassie and EB3pm, who is also the son of Eric B. prepared the audience with their exhilarating melodies.

Right at the top of the gracious night, was the one unmistakable surge of spring that moved the crowd into such a groove, confirming the longevity of pure rap artistry. Youngtrell put the crowd in awe with the performance of his catchy song “Mr. Softee” alongside his electrifying dance moves. At only 9 years old, Youngtrell has clearly mastered crowd participation. The young creative told Old School Hip-Hop Lust that his energetic display is natural and he does not see any competition at this point of his career.

Overall, Eric B. and Rakim continue to show and prove the reality of nostalgia that Classic Hip-Hop music bears ultimately reflecting the reason why their era is coined the Golden Era of Rap.
