Hi so I was a big fan from like 2013-2017 but kind of fell off leading up to yb (still was like vaguely in the loop through the album release but not hardcore) and I’ve been kind of getting back into 5sos lately so what did I miss?? Especially in terms of tumblr bc I see hardly any names I recognize anymore :((
Oh gosh "what did I miss" is far too expansive a question 😅😅 I'll start with the easy part: in my Tumblr experience, it's a pretty rare sight these days to come across someone from the time period you cited. A lot of people fell off before YB or during the unofficial hiatus that happened in 2020 because of the pandemic.
If you have any specific questions, I can answer in better detail but for now, I've compiled an abridged "here's what you missed" recap:
After the release of Youngblood, the band went on the Meet You There tour (highly recommend looking up fan vids on YouTube, that set was 👩🏻‍🍳💋) and released a live album of it at the end of that year. Youngblood the album went on to be streamed over 2 billion times and the song is still charting in Australia to this day.
2019 was controversial in the fandom for a lot of reasons: they featured on a Chainsmokers song called "Who Do You Love" and later toured with them on their World War Joy tour. Personally I always thought the song was a banger and the tour saw them deliver their strongest live show to date (absolutely please look up vids of that on YouTube omg 👁️👄👁️) but some fans were unhappy with their association/didn't like them trying to expand their audience. The band also released two singles off of their forthcoming album but a lot of fans were irked by the staggered and prolonged release strategy.
2020 opened with 2 more singles from the new album and they played the biggest show of their career to date, a featured slot during Fire Fight Australia, a benefit concert attended by 75,000 people and broadcast/streamed globally to millions. (Ashton trended on socials for legit a full day afterwards, it was absolutely a Defining Moment for them.) Unfortunately, promo and tour for their long-awaited 4th album, CALM, was halted for pandemic safety reasons and it released to muted fanfare in March 2020, just as lockdowns were being put into place. The album was still successful and has been streamed over a billion times (it was nearly #1 on Billboard but that's a longer story lol) but the release and truncated era was definitely a disappointment for band and fans alike.
The guys have spent the pandemic living in LA and being generally quiet on socials, finally able to enjoy being in one place and living a "normal" life for the first time since they were kids. Ashton emerged in the fall of 2020 announcing he'd recorded a solo album at home with his roommate and he independently released Superbloom (and its accompanying concert film) in October.
Late 2020/early 2021 the guys went on a few trips to the CA desert to work on a new album and it was heavily implied they intended to be much more hands on with the production of it. They spent the majority of last year working on this new album and no one really knows what to expect from it as they've worked with a potpourri of collaborators (everyone from John Feldmann to Ryan Tedder) and have mentioned several times that it'd been thru multiple incarnations. Over the summer, Luke surprise announced his own solo project (this time backed by a major label) and When Facing The Things We Turn Away From was released in August.
After a year and a half away, the band finally played their first show together in September, at the Global Citizen benefit in LA. December was the band's 10th anniversary and to celebrate, they released a song called "2011" alongside a feature-length variety special on YouTube. (Highly recommend even if you're not familiar with the new material, it's very nostalgic and career expansive, you'll absolutely get something from it if you were a fan at any point.)
And now we're here in February 2022, waiting for any 5SOS5 news - Ashton leaked part of a song the other day so it feels like it'll be any day now but it's felt that way for months tbh 😅.
Other stray developments of note: They finally parted ways with Modest Management (tho eventually ended up signing with their old manager from Modest but at his own firm. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️). They've changed labels a couple times since you left and are now signed to BMG. Nearly 2 years after it was supposed to happen, tour finally starts in April (fingers crossed). Michael got married, Luke is engaged. Ashton bought a cabin in the woods. Calum shaved his head, insisted he wouldn't be growing his curls back and then hilariously had to let his hair grow during quarantine and now he has a mullet. Everyone, band and fans alike, are still generally kind of nuts. The more things change, the more they stay the same 😂

So I started watching your videos about a year or two again, and something just occurred to me that I never really thought of. Why do you review comics in the order that you do? What I mean by this is that for your 10th anniversary, you did follow-ups to pass reviews you've done of comics, but, how come you don't review a series of comics back to back all the time? Why review issue 1 of a series and then not review the next issue of said series for months or even a year?
Because it'd be boring. No, seriously - most books USUALLY get about two years out of them, equaling 24 issues. That's half a year spent on an entire series (remember - comics, with some exception, are MONTHLY releases). It'd get boring for the viewers and it'd get boring for me. I want to switch it up every week (with some exception) because it keeps things interesting. If I spent three months on just, say, that DC 8-issue series Threshold, my views would plummet because it's two months spent on a book nobody cares about and I can only make so funny because it's the same nonsense over and over. Same goes for Youngblood or the like. And what should I do for books that last a lot longer than 24? Some books, even if they're not that great, last 100 issues. That's two years spent on a single topic.People would not watch that and I'd find it increasingly difficult to find new stuff to say. When it comes to, say, Batman/Aliens, sure - that's just two issues... but with Patreon-sponsored reviews being back, I have less time in the year to talk about stuff that *I* want to talk about, so it means cutting something that might be a two-week thing into one this week, and then resume a year later. Originally I planned to do Batman/Aliens both issues in one, but a big problem last year was getting episodes out at their proper release time (Mondays at 4 PM Central), so I decided to cut it off at one issue, since going into issue 2 would have made the episode MUCH longer and thus taken more time to make and release.Sooo, yeah. I like to vary it up and I want to give people incentive to come back week after week. And talking about an entire series over the course of a year would mean that 10th anniversary would celebrate, like, only a few comics as opposed to the massive amount of things I've covered and discussed over the years.

Rules: answer 21 questions and tag 21 people. I saw this on @kinetic-elaboration and had some down time at work. I’ll tag people but it probably won’t be 21.
1) Nicknames: Meg (that’s as far as anyone will get out of me as a name, nickname or otherwise)
2) Zodiac Sign: Virgo
3) Height: 5′7″
4) Hogwarts House: Slytherin, but I did take the test a second time for funsies, and I am what you might call a Slytherpuff.
5) Last thing I googled: mmm, song choices for my wedding
6) Favorite Musicians: It changes because I listen a wide variety of things, but at the moment, Panic! at the Disco, Cascada and Elton John.
7) Songs stuck in my head: songs from the musical “Six”
8) Following: last i checked like 250?
9) Followers: not a lot, but I love to meet people with shared interests. The majority of my friends don’t watch the same shows or read the same books (if they read at all) so this is where I go for a fandom fix.
10) Do you get asks: nope, but my ask box is open
11) Regular amount of sleep: lol what is sleep again? I work two jobs, and one of them is coffee shop so lately I’m lucky if I get 6.
12) Lucky Number: ....3?
13) What are you wearing: black slacks, light blue sleeveless top, tan crocheted sweater and black flats.
14) Dream Job: I’m an anthropology major, and I would love to work for a museum, history has always been my first love, aside from reading and music.
15) Dream Trip: Greece
16) Do you play any instruments: Yes! Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, some trumpet, and I sing too!
17) Do you know any other languages: I took 3 years of French, but it didn’t help me much when I got engaged to a Mexican. My goal is to learn spanish in the future, I feel like I’m always around it because of where I work and the people I know.
18) Favorite Songs: Right now, it’s “Glorious” by Cascada, “Don’t Stop Me” by Queen, “Feel Invincible” by Skillet and “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds of Summer. but that’ll probably change in the next few days.
19) Random Fact: My fiance and I will be getting married on our 10th anniversary.
20) Aesthetic: long hair, summer weather, beaches, campfires, driving with the windows down, curling up with a comfy sweater and good book, impromptu date night
21) Dogs or Cats: BOTH! I grew up all my life with cats, and I hate falling asleep at night in my new house without one sleeping on the end of my bed, but I’ve also never had a dog, and would love to adopt one.

When the Lights Go Out
Synopsis:
Fired Up came onto the scene in the mid 2000s, churning out essentially what so many other bands were also doing.  I wanna say that they emerged from CT or Mass, but I am really not sure.  Ive hear from some that they had a decent following, but honestly every live shot I see, they are playing in front of nobody, which tells me this is yet another band saturating the scene.  They're average, but im sure some will disagree and thats fair.
When I see this 7″. The TV show Saved by the Bell comes to mind.  I guess its the color scheme, and for that, this takes some hits.  Nothing says hardcore to some like Screech and Zack...ATTACK!

State of the Wall: 1-27-18
You know the drill! Check under the cut to see what’s going to be coming over the next two months and some updates about what’s going on with the show!
Schedule of Upcoming Episodes 1/29 – PATREON: Homestuck, Act 2 2/5 – Isaac Asimov’s I-Bots #1 2/12 – Thunderstrike #1 2/19 – Youngblood #10 2/26 – Badrock #1A Event Comics Month II: Crisis of the Wars 3/5 – Event Comics Month II: Infinite Crisis 3/12 – Event Comics Month II: Infinity War 3/19 – Event Comics Month II: World War Hulk 3/26 – Event Comics Month II: Final Crisis
While normally I would say that the schedule is subject to change… this one is definitely not. February and March are months that I’ve had locked down for a while now – March for the next Event Comics Month, and since that’s promised by Patreon stuff, it ain’t going to change. February has been something I’ve wanted to do since I decided how I was going to celebrate the tenth anniversary. Atop the Fourth Wall started as text reviews and a number of those text reviews ended up being made into videos. This year? All the remaining text reviews are going to be made into videos, thus with the exception of the annual Youngblood review, that’s the focus of February.
Contest of Champions Update Many are sad that the Contest of Champions storyline still hasn’t continued yet, so here’s the deal – there’s going to be a tenth anniversary storyline in September through October, so I’m going to be trying to my best to get the Contest storyline finished by then. I’ve written an outline of how the contest will go, equaling about 19 storyline segments in total and I have scripts written for 8 of them. The thing is some of these segments exclusively feature people in other states, so they’re not all in order – I need to get them all finished so I can send off the scripts and they can be recorded in one go.
For those curious, the Contest will START with 32 contestants, whittling them down each of the five rounds until in that last fifth one there are only two left. We won’t see most of these contestants, but at the very least you’ll see their names. My compatriots in this little undertaking have come up with a lot of backstories and details about them that will also never make it to screen, but will prove useful if we end up doing another Contest of Champions storyline down the road (remember, regardless whether or not Linkara wins, other champions in this universe exist and Jaeris himself didn’t win, so it could be Linkara for another go-around or someone else!).
For $5+ patrons, I posted up some behind the scenes graphics that’ll be used for several storyline segments – namely the news segments giving you updates about how the contest is proceeding (since obviously we won’t be seeing EVERY fight). If you’re a $5+ patron, you can check out that post HERE!
If the Contest isn’t finished by the time the 10th Anniversary Storyline starts up… well, tough cookies – I’m not putting off the 10th Anniversary storyline since, well, it’s for the 10th Anniversary. There’s kind of a ticking clock there. As such, if we can’t get it done when we want to, we’ll have to just delay the conclusion of Contest of Champions until afterwards and have a mini-arc in the middle of it, Virtual World arc inside of Battle City arc-style (only less pointless).
The Road to 500 The road to 500 episodes continues! JLA/Avengers was the 485th episode, with the 500th scheduled to happen May 7th. I’m still looking for more suggestions on stuff to show or do during the planned 500th episode livestream, so feel free to throw ideas out there. I’m also writing out new bits of trivia and insights and I’ll likely get other producers in on it as we did for the 300th episode’s stream. I’m hoping you guys throw out some great idea, including whether you’d prefer the stream be done on Twitch or on Youtube, since either option is a possibility for us.
History of Power Rangers In case you’ve missed it, both Operation Overdrive and Jungle Fury are back up and running on youtube! Obviously there are changes, but not as many as you’d think – altering some sentences here and there, different visuals, shorter clips, but they’re basically the same as before (Jungle Fury in particular, as I was able to go into the original project files for that one and simply shorten the clips when needed). RPM has the same problem as In Space, though – a music vide segment that will need to have a cover made to try to get around ContentID issues, so that’s not what’s going to happen next. I’m currently in the process of rewriting the Lost Galaxy videos and it’s coming along fairly well. I’m hoping to keep up a pace of replacement History of Power Rangers at least once a month, but I make no promises. Ninja Steel is going into its second season, so we’re still quite a ways off from me doing the HOPR on it. That’ll likely be in 2019 depending on when the DVDs come out.
Longbox of the Damned I AM planning on doing summer Longbox videos this year, most likely in June or July, though they will be a bit different. To try to reduce the stress on an already-crowded workload, they’ll likely be a weekly thing every Friday (hey, the return of my brief youtube “Frightful Friday Nights” when I posted old Longboxes up on the channel?) of the month, with a different host. It may not be as thorough as other Longboxes I’ve done before, but it should still hopefully be entertaining.
Let’s Play Pokémon Omicron So of course with all these other big projects occurring, Pokémon Omicron has been shoved to the wayside and hasn’t gotten very much work done on it at all. It’s of course not what I want, especially since I’m planning on doing that Elite 4 run for the 500th episode livestream, but the important thing right now is to focus on getting other content out there and ready. The footage is all there waiting to be worked on – I just need to find some time to actually produce them. Thank you all for your continued patience on it.
Conventions And we have some conventions that I will be attending! Given everything else, it’s unlikely there will be a volume 4 DVD, but I am planning on a new History of Power Rangers-themed poster and badge card, so convention attendees look out for those, along with t-shirts and other DVDs that will be in stock with me. The list, of course, will be updated as new conventions are added or if I’m unable to attend something originally planned. Here’s what we’ve got so far:
Animinneapolis – I will once again be attending Animinneapolis on May 25-27 at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis in Minneapolis, MN! This has become a regular thing for me since it’s local and I hope to see people there! Anime Midwest – I shall once again be going to Anime Midwest on July 6-8 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, IL! This one’s also a regular one for me, but it’s definitely a lot of fun and the area is full of great places to see and eat at and the hotel itself is pretty dang cool! Too Many Games – I’ll be coming back to Too Many Games this year on June 22-24 at the Greater Philadelpha Expo Center in Oaks, PA! I sat out last year but I’ll be back again this time with plenty of copies of the AT4W Movie and the Compilation DVD, so definitely come out and take a look!
That’s all I’ve got for now, looking forward to hearing what people have to say!
