In Praise of Felice’s Striped Sweaters

A post written for YRFavesFest2024, graciously hosted by @youngroyals-events. This is in response to prompt #31.

Felice has a number of fabulous outfits, but I think it’s her striped sweater that makes me the happiest.

What about it brings me joy? I think it’s because it’s one of more casual looks. It’s cozy and colorful, reflecting Felice’s personality and her kindness toward others. It also doesn’t look like it’s a pain for her to wear at all. Felice spends a lot of time in season 1 curating her appearance and behavior for others, often in ways that cause her physical discomfort. Once Felice starts wearing the sweater in season 2, we know she’s prioritizing herself more. And who wouldn’t be happy for her?

I especially love it when we see her wear the sweater and her hair’s arranged in braided pigtails. The braids are youthful without looking too little girlish. They’re also cute and practical.

In a season 1 conversation with Maddie, Felice mentions that August’s children will be noble but only Wilhelm’s will be princes and princesses, which suggests to me that Felice’s mother has already been having conversations with her about pursuing relationships that could lead to an advantageous marriage. Talk about being pushed to grow up too early!

On the other hand, Felice’s braids in season 2 seem to show her slowing down and actually letting herself act like a teenager. I’m really glad that the series gives her a chance to express herself in this way, especially given the sobering statistics about Black girls frequently being perceived as older than their age, and treated in harmful ways as a result.

As an homage to Felice’s striped sweater and braids, I decided to dress up Claudie (another one of my American Girl dolls) in a closet cosplay. The colors aren’t exactly correct but I love how she turned out all the same! Not to mention I couldn’t help adding in the lockers for extra Hillerska vibes.
