Tuesday -4pm
Rose found her ring, the one she gave to Tommy and he gave to Alfie the previous day, inside her car under the seat. Probably it fell when she and Alfie had sex there the previous night.
She remembered very well the day he gave it to her as present. It was 1903 and it was a gift for their first anniversary together. They were still very young, only 15, and their first time wasn't even close to happen, and yet the love they had for each other was already there. Back then, Alfie was working in that old bakery and used part of his salary to buy that ring to her. Even at that age, Alfie always talked about how Rose deserved more than a cheap ring. Rose's response was always the same: she didn't needed that.
That ring was part of her for the last 21 years and she wasn't ready to lose it. Smiling, she put it on before returning to her house where Alfie was. He was out since midday and she was willing to spend some time with him alone in their house now they were together again.
"Did ya find it?" he asked watching her entering the house again.
"I did. I wonder how it ended under the seat," she said chuckling.
"The fairies. Because we definitely did nothing inside your car."
"Yeah," she smiled at him "That's what I thought."
Alfie opened his arms and she accepted the invitation to be next to him.
"I can't believe you're still having this," he said holding her hand in his and stroking her finger where the ring was. "It cost me around 20 pennies."
"So? You still have the vest I sewed for you also 20 years ago and you could punch anyone who says that's old and ugly."
"Yes, but's different, luv. You made it it's special. This one I bought it in an antique shop that no longer exists. I can buy you a bigger ring with diamonds in a rose, if you like, little diamonds shining like stars."
"Oh, Al, sweetheart… fuck. I love you. You did buy me several of those and I really love them because they're perfect. But sometimes it's not the price, it's the meaning."
"Yeah. I know. The meaning it's what matters."
Alfie held her against his chest in silence while he was thinking.
Father Hughes was a despicable man. For being a man of God his values were worse than his, at least Alfie wasn't outside in the world pretending to be a good man. But there were things worse than greed and thirst for power. And maybe, if Alfie had known the kind of man that Hughes really was, he wouldn't have talked to him.
But it was too late.
"What do you want, Mr. Solomons? Something tells me that you and I, we have nothing in common." Hughes stared at him. It was very unusual for a Jewish man make a deal with someone like him, especially if the Jewish man was the infamous King of Camden Town. "Isn't your wife member of a left political party, Mr. Solomons? The Independent Labour Party. The ILP, follows the ideas of Marx. Your wife is a fucking communist, Solomons. Do you know what that means?" Hughes mimicked a hangman. "I studied everyone around Thomas Shelby, including you. Gladly for you, your woman is barely an assistant."
Alfie pursed his lips. He'd feel the gun in his waist and it could take it just a second to shoot at the priest. 'Barely an assistant' was a stupid way to describe the active participation she had in the ILP. And even stupider to describe Rose and her love for political activities. But Alfie ignore that for his own good, but especially for hers.
"Ain't here to talk about women and their jobs, Hughes" Alfie said, "I'm here to talk about a robbery," he said to the priest "Thomas Shelby and his men are planning one."
Hughes was in front of him dressed as a priest. But the Devil took many forms, including the form of religious people. So when Alfie talked and shook his hand with him, the deal with the Devil was sealed.
"Where did you go today, Al?" Rose asked, noticing his silence. A silence that she knew very well and had nothing to do with a quiet moment in peace.
"I needed to finish some business."
"With the Russians?"
"No, I didn't see the Russians. I'm not going to ever again."
"Alfie. Where did you go today?"
Her husband sighed. "To a Church, okay? Since when do you ask me so many questions about my work?"
"Since I feel that something is very wrong."
"I know how to handle my own life, sweetheart. I'm a big boy."
"I hope so, Alfie. I hope so."
.
Friday - 3pm.
Tommy's world was upside down. It was worse than he imagined. It shouldn't have ended that way. His little son lost his mother and now he was taken away from him.
He felt the disgrace breathing on his neck. He never considered himself a lucky man, despite his efforts to climb to the top of the mountain, he knew lucky wasn't something that was in his own dictionary. He was powerful, rich, feared, smart but not lucky in any way. And Hughes and his people kidnapping Charlie was the proof of that.
All roads lead to Rome. Or in this case, to Alfie. His wife was right. Rose Solomons was right when she said that Alfie was a bomb ready to explode the moment Tommy put him near the Russians.
And also was right when she said he was an opportunist. Alfie saw the opportunity to have what he wanted and took it. Tommy asked himself, as he and Michael were going to see him, if Alfie knew from the beginning what he was doing.
It was always complicated to deal with Alfie but this wasn't just another day. This was way more serious than that.
Fucking Alfie Solomons and his long monologues. Tommy saw him in front of him with one of his men at his right. Leaning on his cane for support and acting as if everything in the world was okay. Yet, Tommy said nothing.
Business started the way they use to start: good. The usual.
The Londoner didn't mention a thing until Tommy started to confront him.
"… It was you who told them about the tunnel. You told them about the fucking deal with the Soviets. You gave information in exchange for a share…"
"Tommy, Tommy… there were things in that fuckin' treasury that God himself he spoke to me and he said ‘Alfie, you're meant to have those things’." Alfie looked at him and added "I told you I was going to find another way. She deserves it."
"You crossed the line, Alfie."
"You fucking what?"
"You crossed the line."
"The line?"
"They're using my boy!" finally shouted Tommy.
Alfie opened his mouth but said nothing. For a second Tommy saw the confusion in the other man's eyes and Tommy knew in that brief second, no matter what Alfie said later, that he didn't know about Charlie. He never knew. Yet, it was too late to stop it because the leaders were angry for very different reasons but that ended in the same point. Both were capable of doing everything for their beloved ones and both were equally dangerous, knowing what kind of game they were involved in. After killing Alfie's man, everything exploded and even when Michael tried to stop them, the tension between them reached the highest point.
"I do not want him to spare me because of some fucking peace pact. I want him to acknowledge that his anger is un-fucking justified! I want him to acknowledge that he who fights by the sword, he fucking dies by it, Tommy. So what, they took your boy did they, eh? They have got your boy? What fucking "line" am I supposed to have crossed? How many fathers, right, how many sons, yeah, have you cut, killed, murdered fucking butchered, innocent and guilty? You are going straight to fucking hell, ain't ya? Just like me! You fucking stand there, you, judging me, stand there and talk to me about crossing some fucking line. If you pull that trigger, right, you pull that trigger for a fucking honourable reason. Like an honourable man, not like some fucking civilian that does not understand the wicked way of our world, mate."
"Look, Tommy, the killing of Alfie Solomons is not going to help. This will be very bad for business." Michael, nervous, kept trying to keep the order.
"Michael, go and call Inspector Moss. Tell him it's Palmer. Well said, Alfie. Well said."
"I did not know about your boy, though."
"I know. I saw."
Alfie stayed there for some time alone with his thoughts and a dead man on his feet. The adrenaline was still running through his veins. He did what he had to do, because he wanted that necklace, even the Fabergé. But never wanted a little kid be abducted by some crazy priest that now he stopped to think, maybe he did more than teach them how to pray. Never.
Next Monday. 9am
Alfie raised his eyes from his papers when he heard his office's door opening. The figure of Thomas Shelby appeared in front of him and Alfie gestured to the free chair in front of him, inviting the man to take a seat.
Tommy lit a cigarette and drop a black velvet bag in over his papers.
Inside, Alfie found a precious diamond necklace. A real one and one of the most expensive that was in the vault. He put it in his hands to look at it more closely.
"Hope it's enough," Tommy said. "You don't deserve a shit, Alfie. But I understand that you want the best for your wife and I'm no one to judge it."
"How's your boy?"
"Safe and Hughes is dead."
"Good. I'm glad the little one is fine. Tommy, I never…"
"I know. But next time, instead coming to you with a diamond necklace, I'm going to do it with a bullet and I'm going to put it in your head."
"She'll kill ya."
"I know. That's the best thing that would happen to me. But if you don't want her to end selling her soul by killing me, better watch where you're stepping, Alfie."
Both men stayed in silence for some minutes. Alfie put the necklace in his pocket and Tommy finished the cigarette.
"Section D is after my family."
"Fuckin' hell, Tommy, what're you going to do?"
"Play their game. And make some dealings with powerful people. Even powerful than them."
"Go and save 'em, then."
"Yes. And you take care of Rose."
"I will. Tommy… Sorry."
Same Monday. 6pm
Alfie opened the bedroom and found his wife taking off her shoes ready to enjoy her time at home after a long day working.
"Al, you came. How was your day?"
"Better than expected, sweetheart. I've something for ya. Just closed your eyes, will ya?"
The woman smiled curiously at him "What do you have, Alfie?"
"Close your eyes."
His evident happiness, made her to smile even more and followed his orders. "Better you don't have a dead mouse in your hands, Alfie."
He couldn't help but laugh out loud. They were around seven years old when Alfie wanted to prank her but ended with Rose crying of fear and Alfie being reprimanded by his mother. Alfie understood that day for the first time the consequences of his actions and never again made her cry, not even once.
"I promise is something better, luv."
Rose felt him behind her and how first he placed some kisses on her neck and then the unmistakable sensation of a necklace over her skin. And in that moment her mind started to race.
"Alfie…"
"Don't ask."
Rose opened her eyes again when she felt that Alfie stepped back. The mirror in front of her showed a precious diamond necklace that she hated to admit it was too precious and looked really good on her. But she knew very well where that came from.
"How do you get it?"
"Deal with Tommy. Rosie, you look beautiful. I knew you'd even more beautiful than ever with one of these gems. I knew."
Alfie approached her again and kissed her. "It looks way better in you than in them. It's not like they're going appreciate it either. It was one of those they had in the bottom of the box. Too beautiful to be there, too beautiful. And now it's yours, Rosie."
"Tell me this has nothing to do with Tommy's boy, Alfie."
She knew what happened to Charles Shelby because Alfie told her, after she found him being a mess in the living room after the encounter with Tommy.
"Our boy would have been the same age as him today. Just a baby, Rosie. Just a baby."
Charlie Shelby and their unborn baby, Joshua, would have been friends even in the future. But that was something that never going to happen.
She wanted to yell at him for being so impulsive, so stupid to believe Hughes' intentions. She knew he was going to lose his mind because of the russians but she never imagined Alfie doing an alliance with a man who was ready to send to hell all people opposite to his beliefs.
"I didn't want to harm a baby, Rosie."
"I know. I know, but Alfie- what you did…"
"I fucking know, Rose! I don't need to be scolded right now! I almost killed a baby."
"No, Alfie… I don't think- Fuck, I don't know. But it doesn't matter now, the baby is fine. Isn't he? He's with his dad and family. Don't punish yourself, you didn't know. But, fuck, Alfie I need to say this: what the hell were you thinking?!"
"I just wanted the best for you."
It was a horrible situation because she couldn't believe Alfie went after a monster disguised as priest only because he wanted more than Tommy offered in the beginning and just because of her. But she couldn't be mad at him because her husband felt miserable and her heart ached watching him like that.
But the proof that Tommy accepted and Alfie got what he wanted was around her neck now.
"I shouldn't accept this, Al."
"Tommy took it. Not Hughes, not the section D, not Romanov…it's Tommy. He's my friend, Rosie. And he appreciates you, otherwise, he'd never done that."
"I'm not sure."
"Rosie, luv… it's for you."
She looked at him. His eyes were shining and this Alfie being happy in front of her was so different from the one she saw nights ago drowing in guilt that she nodded.
"Promise me, that this is the last time you risk everything just because of me, Alfie."
"I won't promise that. You know I can't promise that."
"I don't want to bury you, Al."
"You won't."
Rose nodded, still feeling a lump in her throat. Alfie hugged her from behind and kissed the top of her head. "Do you want to go to a restaurant so you can show this beautiful necklace to the world?"
"Yes. It'd be nice. It'll help us to think about other things, too."
One of the best restaurants that London had, received them that night. It's not like Rose completely accepted the gift, but understood that it was too late to do other thing. She needed to do something soon, but for now she decided to relax -it was well deserved after the mentally draining week she lived- and doing it in hands of her husband while dancing it was a good way to do it. And Alfie was happy and his good mood was enough for her to make her smile.
A week later. Early afternoon.
Arrow House seemed to be empty and quiet except for some birds chirping.
Rose parked her car in the entrance and walked to the door where an old housekeeper received her.
"Good morning, ma'am. Is Mr. Shelby, here? I'm Mrs. Solomons."
"Yes, Mrs. Solomons, please come in. I'm going to announce Mr. Shelby that you're here."
"You're too kind. Thank you."
Arrow House was very similar in size and decorations to her former manor and she didn't like at all. The house that Alfie and she had in London was big without being a manor and was enough for them. And soon, they were going to arrange everything to buy the house of their dreams in Margate, next to the sea. Honestly, Rose couldn't wait to leave the city and moved there for good.
The manor was invaded by ghosts, figuratively speaking. The ghosts of short happy moments and the ghost of eternal sadness and melancholy. Laughs and sobs mixed and trapped in the walls torturing everyone there. She wondered if Tommy was going to end losing his mind inside there because it was impossible to survive living there. Also hate. That house was full of hate. His family hates him, a voice in her head told Rose.
And that was probably true.
"I need to go outside," she said to Frances again. "There's a place I can sit there?"
Frances nodded, surprised by her requirement. "Is everything alright, Mrs. Solomons?"
"I just need fresh air, please."
"Yes. Of course, follow me."
.
Tommy found her sitting at the table he had in the garden. The trees full of reddish golden leaves were behind her and their branches move with the wind. A teapot and some biscuits were on the table but the woman didn't touch them, yet.
"Mrs. Solomons…"
"Mr. Shelby," she said extending her hand and Tommy shook it softly.
"I'm a bit surprised…"
"Yes, I know. I know. You know why I'm here."
"I suspect it, yes," Tommy sat in a chair next to her and lit a cigarette "you owed me nothing, Rose."
"It's not about owing or not, Tommy. It's about what happened. Alfie doesn't know I'm here. He's too fucking proud and that's probably his worst trait. I can only imagine what he said to you, but Tommy, he didn't know about your boy."
"I know. I saw it."
"Alfie can be difficult," Rose said stirring her tea "but he's not like the men I know you know. Or the men I also know. Those fucking assholes. When he knew about little Charlie, the only thing he imagined that your boy would've been ours. And that was horrible enough to mark him forever. And me too," she looked at the man in front of her, "I need to know, that this necklace isn't a way to remember him that he owes you something. I don't want Alfie looking at this fucking thing and remember constantly that Charlie was kidnapped because of him. Or because of me."
"That necklace is a way to say that I always deliver my promises. And it's not for him, it's for you."
Rose snorted " Is this a kind of threat?"
"No. I don't do that."
"You didn't promise me anything, Tommy."
"Just took that necklace as gratitude for your warning that Alfie was a time bomb. You were right. Your ring calmed him just when it was necessary."
"I have very bad feelings about everything. Just things that are in my mind and I can't let it go. I'm going to say this frankly speaking as the adults we both are, Thomas: if this necklace means Alfie is in danger because of you, then you can take it back and give it to someone else. Your aunt, some maid or the Virgin Mary. I don't fucking care. Some diamonds aren't going to buy my Alfie's life."
"It all depends on him, Rose. I warned him and I'm warning you, too. Next time he betrays me, I'm going to kill him and I know the consequences of it. If you came here just because a gift, I know you're going to come here to kill me and it's a risk I'm accepting very well."
"All actions have consequences."
"Maybe next time I should make business with you, Rose and not Alfie. Rumours say you're running to be a MP."
"I'm on it, but not yet. And if you want to make business with me you need to give me more than the promise of the balls of Churchill and the King themselves served in a golden tray, Tommy."
The man smirked "I'm going to think about it, then."
Rose stood up and took two cookies from the plate on the table "for the journey back," she said. "There's nothing more to say."
Tommy accompanied her to her car and both of them passed in front of the house.
"Beautiful place," she said "but bad vibes."
"It's just a house."
"Yes, but not a home. Goodbye, Mr. Shelby."
Rose started the engine and soon Tommy and Arrow House were left behind. The cold autumnal air entering through the window helped her to breathe again. She couldn't wait to see Alfie again lost herself in his arms. Maybe the ideas in her head could disappear as soon she was in London again.
But she wasn't sure and Tommy returning inside his house either. Mrs. Solomons was right, Arrow House wasn't what he dreamt of. And now that he was alone just with his son, could only think about it. The had lost his wife and probably his family, in certain way, too. The most invaluable things he had in his life.
When she finally arrived at London, she went directly to Alfie who was reading near the fireplace. For some minutes they kissed eachother, like they didn't see in ages. They only pulled apart when she heard something that sounded like someone was crying.
"Oh, my god…" she said, discovering the source of those sounds. A brown young puppy, was looking at her from a dog bed, near Alfie's sofa. "Sweetheart, you didn't…"
"I did, luv. It was time, right? After our ol'Fancy said goodbye I thought it was time to fill that spot. His name is Cyril. He's three months old."
Cyril wagged his tail when he heard his name and Rose couldn't help but smile. Suddenly, all those fears evaporated when she was there with her husband and their new dog. The rest of the day, suddenly, it was incredible better.
In Arrow House, Tommy kissed Charlie's head who was sleeping in his crib.
In his bedroom it was just him and his own regrets.
Luca Changretta was ready to appear in his life and indirectly, in Rose's life too. Because tragedy knows nothing about pain, Tommy was about to lose a very close beloved one. And for Rose, her most invaluable thing was going to be damaged forever.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal - Episode 2
I watched Unicorn: Warriors Eternal episode 2. I watched the first one on youtube and didn't know the second was out. But now I caught up on the series.
Tumblr media
The great things from episode 1 still remain. So let's start with the ''negatives''. Let's go from the smallest ''problem'' to the biggest one. The reason why I used '' '' is because those things didn't bother me too much. But they might be for some people and it's worth addressing.
1. I know there are people who would love to see an entire episode dedicated to Edred/Dimitri and Alfie/Seng, because the first one was pretty much about Emma/Melinda. I personally don't mind because Emma/Melinda had to share her screen time with the lore and the setup for the story. Also, I hate when stories drag on for no reason if they don't have enough backstory for an entire episode add something else important! I think they implemented introductions to Alfie/Seng and Dimitri/Edred. Also, it's not like it's over. Their current and previous lives fighting for dominance seem to be a major part of the story. We just have to wait and see. Hope it's not a letdown.
Tumblr media
2. The voice acting. I don't know if the voice actors for Emma and Alfie are young and inexperienced or if they try to put on an accent and they can't keep it and act emotionally at the same time but something's not right. When Emma is quiet and shy the voice actress fits perfectly but when she needs to shout, it's as if she doesn't want to wake her parents in the next room. And when Emma and Alfie have their Rush Hour 3-like comedy routine it's like they just reed lines and don't talk to each other. Dimitri/Edred has the best voice actor because he actually can emote and his voice is nice to listen to. This is great because it seems he's the one who's going to do a lot of talking with his personality and being the one who has to explain a lot of stuff because he for some reason can remember more than the others. (I will write about it later.) I've seen people upset that after his transformation he lost his Russian accent. I understand. In the limited time he was on screen Dimitri charmed a lot of people and out of all characters, he looks the least like his original self. He only kept his outfit. But I think it can be a great indicator of who is talking. If it's a Dimitri who's in control we will hear his accent. At least I hope so. It would've been a waste if they didn't use it. All in all, I don't mind and it should get better as the series goes on.
Tumblr media
3. Timeline? The only date we have been provided is 1772. That's when the school for orphaned boys has been established. We have no idea how long it's been active and how long it's been abandoned. It can be the 21st century with steampunk coating for all we know.
youtube
4. My biggest problem with this scene is how confusing it is. Emma is watching Winston play against the boys from the school for orphaned boys. I guess they let boys of all ages play because Alfie is referred to as just a kid even after who knows how much time has passed since then. In all the information about the show, the word teenagers keep coming up. I don't know about you, but for me, a teenager is a person from the age of 13 to 19. You know? The -teen part! Emma was about to get married so I assume she's 18 at least. I guess Dimitri is 18/19 because he must be old enough to travel on his own. Unless he had run away from home.
Just out of curiosity, I googled marriage in 18th-century England. These are the results!
Until 1823 the legal age in England for marriage was 21 years for men and women although after 1823 a male could marry as young as 14 without parental consent and a girl at 12 although most girls didn't marry until around the ages of 18 to 23.
And there you have it folks! The show takes place after 1823 and Emma is around 18/19 years old. But hey, it's just a theory. A TV show theory! And cut.
Tumblr media
This episode was fun. I have to admit I feel kind of smug knowing I predicted the love triangle. Wait is a triangle if there are 5 people in it? Emma loves Winston, Melinda loves Edred, and Dimitri might have some attraction to Emma/Melinda but he could've just been nice. .) Shipers, your time has come!

MARGARET QUALLEY. SHE/HER  / have you ever heard of THIS MUST BE MY DREAM by The 1975, well, it describes MIRIAM BYRD to a tee! the twenty-Seven year old, and ARTIST was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say she is more flakey or more ADVENTUROUS instead? anyway, they remind me of paint stained clothes, chain smoking at 3am to keep the party going, travelling, and second-hand books maybe you’ll bump into them soon!
Name: Miriam Frances Byrd Nickname: Birdie, Miri Age/DOB: 27, 03/03 Occupation: Artist Sexuality: Bisexual
TW: Death, Drugs, Teen Pregnancy
TL;DR
Born to teen parents in Manchester
Daughter of Alfie Byrd, deceased rockstar
Moved to NYC as a child
Travelled and moved around a lot
Married Chase Williams on a whim when she was in her early 20s, has not seen him since the morning after the wedding.
BIO
Born in Manchester, England to two teenage love birds, Alfie (18) and Lucy (17), Miriam lived in the United Kingdom until she was 5. In the earliest years of her life she resided with her mother and maternal grandparents, seeing her father often but not sharing a consistent home with him until the family moved to America shortly after she’d started primary school.
Alfie Byrd wanted nothing more in life than an audience and a stage. Joining his first band at 13, he quickly fell into what was, at the time, a crumbling post-punk movement, the final years of the scene that was known as Madchester. Though Lucy’s parents didn’t find his oversized jeans and pre-grunge bowl cut appealing, Lucy fell head-over-heels for Alfie shortly after her 15th birthday. The pair quickly became inseparable, and despite Lucy’s relatively conservative upbringing, fell unintentionally pregnant. Though young parenthood was a challenge that did not prevent Alfie from chasing his dreams. Miriam’s earliest memories centre around her father’s music. The young family moved to New York when Miriam was 5 years old. It was around that time that Alfie’s star began to rise.
Topping international charts with his band, Alfie’s career was he centre of their family. Miriam adored her father, turning to him for comfort when her mother’s moods would slip into a hostile depression. Her life was forever changed the morning she woke up and found him unconscious at the kitchen table. She was 11. Though she hadn’t been completely sheltered from the realities of her father’s lifestyle, his death came as a shock to the family and Miriam was left trying to piece together her world as it crumbled before her. As the world mourned an artist, Miri mourned her life as she’d known it.
Lucy and Miriam had been vaguely aware of Alfie’s drug problem, but it wasn’t until his death that they learned the severity of it. The pair briefly returned to Manchester to live with Lucy’s parents once more, but Alfie’s death haunted them at every turn. In the birthplace of the Britpop icon she called “dad,” fans had gathered to mourn, leaving Miriam and Lucy awkwardly navigating their past while trying to survive the idea of a future. They started anew more than once, living in France, Canada, and Greece before settling in a small town in Colorado where Lucy remarried a younger man (also a musician) when Miriam was 17.
On her 18th birthday, Miriam was given access to a portion of her trust and within a month she was travelling the world. For years she roamed the globe, reuniting with some of the people who had known her dad, and their children. Her fathers legacy lived on and Miriam was all too happy to live the rockstar child’s life that her mother had kept her from.  When Miri was 21 she met Chase Williams and saw stars in her eyes. The pair married after a drunken night and when Miriam woke up and realized what she'd done, she panicked and fled. She told no one about the marriage but has often wondered what could have been if she hadn't been so afraid of getting close to someone. After a brief stint living in a van, Birdie chose to dedicate herself to her art and has settled in London, for now
More to come...

Name: Kadriye "Kaddy" Deniz
Age & Birthday: 21 years old, June 1st 2002
Gender/Pronouns: ciswoman she/her
Birthplace: Kilis, Turkey
Time in Atlanta: 15 years
Neighborhood: Center Hill
Association: Reapers
Occupation: Employee at Signal Wireless / Affiliate
Positive personality traits: Forgiving, Patient, Passionate
Negative personality traits: Sensitive, Petty, Proud
Faceclaim: Bahar Sahin
ABOUT
Kadriye was six years old when her family moved to the United States, settling in Atlanta with a small home in Center Hill. It was normal to not have much while growing up but there was a belief that being in America gave them all better opportunities. Kaddy not only saw her parents work hard to provide for them but also her brother and sister which made her eager to be able to do the same. She still puts a lot of pressure on herself to succeed and can seem like a perfectionist.
Having immigrant parents is not easy and Kadriye always felt the worry that she wasn't doing enough. Plus, she witnessed her brother, Taner, getting in trouble with the law because he wanted to provide extra money for them all. She was unaware that her brother and father had a difficult relationship as she was often protected from hearing any of the arguments, her sister taking her outside to distract her.
Kaddy wasn't the best student but she wasn't the worst, she excelled at things to do with technology and math more than any other subject. She also wanted to "be like the cool kids" and quickly befriended other Center Hill kids who were known to be trouble. Her parents were worried she was going to be similar to her brother, so Kadriye learned how to be secretive and self preserving. When she was fifteen she thought she was pregnant with her then boyfriend, Alfie. Even after discovering it was a false alarm, Kaddy didn't bother to tell any of her family.
She has many secrets about her life, that she smokes and has been drinking from a young age, sneaking out to parties long before she was legally able to drink. She's taken drugs, used fake I.D for clubs. It was called just being a kid in Center Hill but her parents wouldn't view it that way. She certainly hasn't told her sister about her work with the Reapers. Even Taner isn't happy that she wanted the extra money and began working at Signal Wireless, putting her technical knowledge to good use. She helps out by breaking and unlocking equipment and sometimes even hacking if it's needed.

Name: Aaron Anderson
Age & Birthday: 21 years old, May 10th 2002
Gender/Pronouns: cis man he/him
Birthplace: Atlanta, GA
Time in Atlanta: 21
Neighborhood: Center Hill
Association: Reapers
Occupation: Employee at Cineplex, Reaper Member.
Positive personality traits: Confident, Affectionate, Charismatic
Negative personality traits: Explosive, Intense, Devious
ABOUT:
Aaron is never seen far away from any of his family members but most of all, he is never seen far from his twin brother Alfie. The two are the loudest and more troublesome of Hunter and Katherine's children and Aaron is the loudest of the twins. While Alfie is perfect at being the god of sarcasm, Aaron can flip instantly. He doesn't mince his words, he will say everything he means even if it offends or upsets. He's easy to wind up and lose his cool, his personality flipping quicker than a coin. He's unpredictable, much like his father, using anger as an outlet to help him.
Being a middle child, even as a twin, has it's benefits. Aaron can see how each of his brothers all handle their emotions differently, either preferring to internalize or ignore them in one way or another. That's why he prefers to let it all out and he has many emotional outbursts. It's not unlike him to throw things, leave the trailer with a slamming door and not be seen for a few days.
Aaron's mouth has always got him into trouble along with his devious nature. He showed awareness of what manipulation was from as young as three years old. He tries to twist and turn things around so he's never the problem and if he doesn't get his own way, the temper tantrum is heard far and wide. When he's not an emotional mess, Aaron likes to party and be as social as possible. He's always trying to see where the fun is happening and if it isn't, he creates his own.
Aaron doesn't prefer one parent or one sibling over the other. He admires his mother's strength and he admires his father's aggression. He admires Asher's intelligence, Alfie's quick wit and Abel's observant nature. He wishes he could be more like each of them, scared he's the least interesting brother or the worst one to be around. However, Aaron likes to think he has mixed together the best parts of his parent's personality but other people might not agree. Even if Aaron can be unpredictable, he's reliable when it comes to showing up for any of his family. Center Hill might know him as the reckless brother and Aaron quite likes the bad reputation. However, he's worried those closest to him know that he's insecure and constantly existing in survival-mode.
After his twin brother joined the Reapers, Aaron has been tempted to do the same. But, despite all of his outbursts and bad temper the last thing he'd ever want to do is give more reasons for his mother to worry. Even if he acts like he doesn't care, Aaron's problem has always been caring too much.

HEAR: Indie Rock | HotWax - ‘A Thousand Times’ EP
Tumblr media
HotWax just bursted on the scene with an incredible debut A Thousand Times EP that is WILD and absolutely captivating rock. Their grunge rock sound is reminiscent of early 90s rock but with much more OOMPF! Take a listen to their single “Mother” below: Acclaimed UK three-piece HotWax today announced their debut North American tour dates this fall in support of Royal Blood. The run will begin on November 9th at Los Angeles’ The Wiltern and take the band up the west coast and across the mid- and southwest before wrapping at San Diego’s The Sound on November 27th. “We are beyond excited to be supporting Royal Blood this November. We have grown up listening to their music and this opportunity is like a dream!” says the band. “To be playing America for the first time is insane, we feel so lucky.” A current itinerary is below and tickets will go on sale this Friday, June 2nd at 10am local time. HotWax–vocalist/guitarist Tallulah Sim-Savage, bassist/vocalist Lola Sam, and drummer Alfie Sayers–will be touring in support of their debut EP A Thousand Times, released May 19th(Marathon Artists) and which has garnered the young band praise from DORK (cover story), NME, Clash, Louder Than War, The Independent, The Times, and more. The band has also been getting early stateside nods around the EP and its singles (“Rip It Out,” the title track, “Treasure”) from Stereogum (‘Other albums of note’) and Brooklyn Vegan (“dose of grunge revival”), as well as radio play from influential stations like KEXP and WFUV. The five-track A Thousand Times was produced by Ben Beetham (of Kid Kapichi) and mixed by Mike Horner (Hot Chip, HMLTD, Deaf Havana). “The EP is a homage to mine and Lola’s relationship growing up together and the arguments we’d have a thousand times,” explains Sim-Savage. “The EP includes themes of guilt, love, climate change, womanhood, contraception, anxiety, and endings.” At just 18 years old, HotWax is already dominating local scenes in the southeast of England, completing a mini UK tour last month, support dates with Sad Boys Club and Cumgirl8, as well as stops at The Great Escape and Dot To Dot festivals. The band will also perform at a number of upcoming summer festivals, including Mad Cool, Visions, and All Points East (alongside The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs). HotWax’s rarified live energy and sound has already won the support of Courtney Love, Nova Twins, Wolf Alice, Jack Saunders, John Kennedy, and Matt Wilkinson. The band, who have only recently left school, harnesses the firepower of the grunge pioneers through songs armed with mighty choruses, and they possess the imaginative brilliance to stake out a new landscape in guitar music. Equus Interview with Alfie Allen from March 18, 2008
Theatre and Dance Previews
You are in: Beds Herts and Bucks > Entertainment > Theatre and Art > Theatre and Dance Previews > What's Alfie all about?!
Alfie Allen
What's Alfie all about?!
Katy Lewis
The brother of Lily and son of Keith, Alfie Allen tells us about his first big stage role ahead of his arrival in Milton Keynes.
Equus
Milton Keynes Theatre
17-22 March 2008
Mon – Sat: 7.30pm Wed & Sat: 2.30pm
Starring Simon Callow, Alfie Allen, Linda Thorson and Laura O’Toole.
Psychiatrist Martin Dysart (Simon Callow) is brought the most challenging case of his career by magistrate Hester Saloman. Alan Strang (Alfie Allen) seems like a normal 17-year-old. His life is routine and his family loving. However, Alan’s passion for horses and his first experience with a girl, stable-hand Jill has led him to behave in the most devastating way. Only Dysart seems able to grasp the answer to this psychological puzzle.
With actor father Keith, music star sister Lily and film producer mother Alison Owen (Shaun of the Dead), it may have been inevitable that Alfie Allen would pursue a career in the spotlight.
He is undoubtedly the latest rising star of the Allen family, having appeared alongside Keira Knightley in the blockbuster film Atonement and who can also be seen at the moment on the big screen in The Other Boleyn Girl.
Alongside that, he has just turned his attention to the stage and can currently be seen in his first major role, alongside Simon Callow in Peter Shaffer’s award winning play Equus, where he plays troubled teen Alan Strang, the role which also brought Daniel Radcliffe critical acclaim in the West End last year.
But Alfie first came to public attention when his sister wrote a song about him - "Derek". OK, it's "Alfie", where the lyrics included the lines:
Ooooo deary me My little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed I tell him he should get up cos it's nearly half past three He can't be bothered cos he's high on THC I ask him very nicely if he'd like a cup of tea I can't even see him cos the room is so smoky
And since then, his various expulsions from school in a turbulent early life have been well-documented. So, what’s Alfie really all about? Well, as it turns out, he seems to be a rather thoughtful young actor who is thoroughly enjoying his new role on the stage. I spoke to him during the Equus tour where he told me more.
How would you describe Equus?
Alfie: It’s a play about a boy’s love for horses and the problems that arise during it – and that’s it in a nutshell, a really short way of putting it. It kind of questions what is normality and who’s got the right to say what is sane and what is insane and why is this boy’s passion for horses so wrong. That’s kind of what Simon Callow’s part, Martin Dysart does. He questions it and gets pulled into it. He’s supposed to be analysing this boy’s behaviour but starts admiring it.
So Alan Strang, your character, has got a kind of condition, and Simon Callow’s role is to look at it and while he’s looking at it, he begins to question whether what Alan is doing is actually normal and everybody else is wrong?
Alfie: That’s completely what it’s a about, yes.
Alfie Allen in Equus
This is a subject that’s always interested me – who has got the right to say what’s normal or not?
Alfie: Completely! That’s what Peter (Shaffer – the playwright) said to me when I had a meeting with him. He said that what made him write the play was that he started thinking about things like, why do some men like blonde girls, what makes us like these things, what makes us who we are? It’s just a very interesting play that raises a lot of issues.
Alan Strang is described as a horse-crazed anguished creative, yet disturbed, teen. Is that how you’d describe him?
Alfie: Yes. In the play there’s a couple of lines where the mother says he’s a very gentle sensitive young boy, which he is, yet he still does these terrible, terrible crimes, which is what it’s kind of all about really.
And he’s under a psychiatrist, but the play is questioning what’s normal and what’s not, so in a sense, is the play having a pop at psychiatry as a profession?
Alfie: Maybe it was when it was written in 1973, but I think that now, the methods of psychiatry have changed so much that I don’t think it’s having a pop at psychiatry, I think it’s almost just having a pop at authority really. I say that, but it’s so broad really, and that’s why I think people should just come and see it because everyone will have their own opinion of it. It really covers so many issues. It’s a very interesting play and I think whoever comes to see it, whatever age they are, or sex they are, they can bring something different away from it.
It’s well known that Daniel Radcliffe played this part in the West End and there was a big hoo hah about him being naked. Obviously you are doing that too – how do you prepare for something like that?
Alfie: You just do it really. I went to the gym a lot to keep myself in shape, not really to make myself look good but to keep healthy because it’s such a demanding part. But in terms of the nudity, funnily enough, it was harder doing it in the rehearsal rooms than on the stage for the first time. Because when you’re doing it in front of 900 people you don’t know, it’s easier than doing it in front of 20 people that you do know. But the first time you do it, you just do it.
You’ve done quite a few films recently but this is your first stage role, was that daunting?
Alfie: It was at first but I’ve learnt so much going along. I thought theatre would be a little but more difficult, but to be honest I don’t think you can even compare the two, I think they’re so different. Obviously in theatre you work chronologically so you kind of know where your emotions are supposed to be and you’re always on top of things, and as an actor you always know what’s coming next.
I haven’t played a huge role like this in TV and film but I think I can basically take what I’ve learned in doing theatre and apply it to TV and film. In those, I could be doing my most important scene on the first day of filming and then go back to the beginning the next day, so you need to know where your emotions are.
Theatre seemed more difficult at first, but once I got into it, you kind of go into autopilot on the stage, and always know where you are supposed to be.
As you say, it’s a very demanding role. Have you found it quite easy to relate to the character?
Alfie: Yes, but I think any actor of my age would find something in this play to relate to. I think that’s how any actor would make their performance convincing, by bringing an element of themselves into the character.
You can say to actors that you’ve got to be the character and really get into it but you have to make it realistic by bringing an element of yourself into it.
I saw a psychiatrist when I was younger because I had ADHD and I had some problems with authority, so I guess I can kind of relate to that in a way. I know what it’s liked to be probed and to be asked questions where people are looking for a certain answer, and are trying to pull something out of your answer. So, in terms of that I knew what it was like to see a psychiatrist, but in terms of the love for horses it was kind of hard to relate to.
During rehearsals I went to a stable up in Wimbledon, and I got to groom horses – and there’s a very important part in the play where I have to groom a horse – and I definitely saw the sensual side of it. It was strange being up close and personal to horses like that but I could kind of see what Peter was thinking when he wrote the play, and about why Alan was like this. I could see where his love for horses came from.
I read a quote from you that said you were born angry! Do say if you didn’t say it, but it’s been well-documented that you’ve been expelled from various schools so are you an anguished creative too?
Alfie: Well, I’m just like any person really, if you are pushed too far you can crack, and get angry but I don’t think I said I was born angry!
Alfie Allen in Equus
It’s also well-known that you come from a family of performers, so was it inevitable that you would act? Were you encouraged or discouraged from performing?
Alfie: Neither, I always wanted to do it. Obviously I saw dad, but I didn’t see him in a film or something and say ‘oh wow that’s what dad does, I want to do that’. It was more seeing him with his friends and with other people and seeing how he made people laugh and suddenly just create a character out of thin air. I think that’s what made me want to be an actor.
It took me a while to realise that’s what dad does for a living, but even at school I was a bit of a class clown, and did impersonations of people and was good at drama – I did GCSE. I always knew I wanted to be an actor, it wasn’t like mum or dad encouraged or discouraged me. To be honest my dad told me when I started acting that 95 per cent of it was about rejection and I soon discovered that by going to auditions and not getting jobs for about three or four years, that was kind of my drama school really. I was going to auditions and being turned away the whole time, but then it started to go well for me.
Harry Enfield was also a kind of step-father to you. Did he have an influence on you do you think?
Alfie: Probably yes. He was a very, very nice person and a very funny guy. Me and my friend went out to dinner with him recently and my friend said he can see a lot of his humour in me so he must have had an influence in some way. As a child I think that any kind of male living in the house would have an influence on you.
The media have put you and your sister in a sort of new cool Britannia set of young up and coming stars – how do you feel about that? Do you think you are?!
Alfie: Well – if people want to call me that great! [laughs] But I don’t really pay attention to all that to be honest, I just get on with the job that I’m doing. I just live in the present I guess and don’t really read the papers.
Obviously you do get press attention – how do you deal with that?
Alfie: I just ignore it! Some friends call me up now and again and say ‘have you seen what they read about you in the paper’ and I say ‘no I didn’t see it and I don’t want to see it’! I just get on with it. I’m an actor - I act - I don’t want to be a celebrity.
Have you read really ridiculous things about yourself that just aren’t true?
Alfie: No – I don’t read much of it but some people tell me some funny things. I know that after my first night in Equus someone put the heading ‘Willy Allen’, which I thought was hilarious! But other than that I don’t really pay attention to it.
What’s next for you? Or do you just play it by ear?
Alfie: I have an idea of what I’m doing after this but at the moment I just want to concentrate on this and see what happens. I really do live by the motto that I just want to live in the present. I don’t really like to plan things too much. I’m quite un-organised to be honest so I just take things as they come.
Do you want to do more stage work?
Alfie: Definitely more stage work! I would love to do more stage, it’s very stimulating, and it’s exhilarating. But people have asked me what would you rather do, film, TV or theatre but I don’t think you can compare them. Film and TV are probably quite similar but theatre is just a thing on its own. It’s a complete learning curve which is fantastic, I’m enjoying every second of it.
Did you like the song that Lily wrote about you?
Alfie: I loved it!
Was it true?
Alfie: At a point it was yes! That was when I was much younger so I’ve grown out of it now!

Biography
The Bishop’s had known early on in their marriage that they weren’t going to be able to have their own child and had made the decision that they were going to go the route of adoption. Things fell into place perfectly and Adrian was born and become the first son of the Bishop family. He was the apple of their eye, the perfect child that they had wanted so dearly finally in their life and with all the good intentions in the world they frequently reminded him of that.
Adrian never wanted for anything at any point in his childhood, his parents working hard and providing for all of his wants. They catered for his love of art from a young age, putting him into classes and providing him with all the materials that he needed. They were the perfect little family of three and they were in a routine, one that worked. Adrian was able to thrive, excelling his way through school and constantly living up to the title of his parent’s ‘perfect little miracle’. A title he wore proudly despite how heavy it was. He was always quiet, did just as he was told and excelled in whatever he put his mind to. There were always some worries in the adults around him that he was a little too quiet but nothing that was a huge concern. It was always put down to spending too much time in adult company. When his parents got this note at a school visit it was the final sign they needed that confirmed their thoughts - it was time to expand the family.
They began the adoption process again, this time deciding that there were so many children in the system who were often overlooked for babies that they’d help wherever they could. That was how his first sibling entered Adrian’s life. From the beginning it was a flurry of mixed emotions. Adrian’s life had been pretty perfect, everything was going well and he was doing great but the prospect of a sibling was definitely an appealing one. He approached the idea of his new little brother with all the excitement he could muster and the protective big brother instincts kicked in pretty quickly. However, it turned out things weren’t going to be quite how he imagined them. His new brother was much more of a hot-head than Adrian was ready for and it was a bit of a rocky road for the pair - but despite their clearly very different personalities the brother bond grew quickly. It was awkward, tough at times, but they loved each other.
When his father told him one day, a year or so after Max had joined the family, that they were moving across the country he found it hard to not blame this huge change on the arrival of his brother. Things had never quite settled and the framing of a ‘new start for everyone’ didn’t quite appeal to Adrian. He was happy where he was, he didn’t need a new start. But, the Bishop’s perfect little miracle did as he always did. He smiled, he nodded and he made sure everyone else was happy and okay. They moved to Moorbrooke and everything started again.
In his new setting Adrian’s love for art began to flourish even more. Through his teenage years Adrian’s role in the family as the mediator, the quiet and helpful one who was always there with a smile on his face to put people back together and keep things ticking over began to take its toll. While he never let on to anyone the stress it was causing him, instead plastering the same smile on his face as he always did, he turned to his paints as a way to express himself. He began to see it as more than just his fun hobby to express himself and instead began to consider it as a possible career. Adrian never really came out of his shell other than with his small knit of friends and family. He remained a well liked and respected person throughout the town as he continued through school and into the end of his teenage years but most people of Moorbrooke probably wouldn’t be able to tell you much about him.
As school finished Adrian began applying to art schools. For a couple of years he got nothing but rejections, taking on a full time job at the local art gallery to keep himself busy while he continue to create and apply. It was approaching his 21st birthday when a late acceptance for a small art school in New York came through. Initially he was raked with guilt at the thought of leaving his family, they had given him everything and while he’d made this decision a while ago the fact it was now a reality made it seem harsh. He was so used to being around to make sure everyone was alright that he was worried things would fall apart without him.
The week of his leaving for New York came and something came over Adrian. It was if 21 years of being everyone’s ‘perfect little miracle’, the pristine child who held everything together, got too much for him and he needed to let them know. Adrian unloaded on his parents, releasing all of the pent of resentment he had for them, that he didn’t get to embrace his youth in ways he should have because of the pressures they’d put on him. He unloaded on Max, telling him that the trouble he’d caused the family with his outbursts throughout life was nothing short of ungrateful for the unrelenting love he had been given. Adrian was very harsh with his brother, his final words to him before leaving essentially telling him that he had no faith in him - that he was sure he’d fuck everything up while he was gone and this time he wasn’t going to fix it for him.
Adrian left for New York on a sour note but one that made him feel free, like he had left behind a load of baggage and now he was going to get to start again.
For the first few years the Bishop family (except their mother) barely heard from him. Adrian didn’t come home for the holidays, instead opting to go with his new friends or staying in the City. No one in Moorbrooke knew that the quiet little art boy they knew was in the City finding himself, getting up to things he never imagined he would and making choices that he would never get over. After almost three years of what was basically radio silence a very different Adrian appeared home for Thanksgiving. It was awkward but joyous, they were all back together at least. From then on the contact stayed minimal but Adrian made sure he was back home for every holiday.
Adrian stayed in New York for five years, throughout his studies and a couple of years of trying his best to find a way to sustain a lifestyle there while trying to create an art career. No one ever came to visit, he never brought anyone from his New York life home and when he eventually returned to Moorbrooke a very different man there were so many unanswered questions that he refused to address.
Adrian moved back home, getting himself an apartment in Oakley Court and his old job at the Art Gallery to begin. He was lost, a man unsure what to do with his life as he trudged through his return to the city for months on end in a loop. That was when the junior florist opportunity came up - something new. Adrian jumped at the opportunity. For the last few months he has been learning all that he can about his new trade, working part-time in the small cafe at the Art Gallery and trying to piece together a life for himself in Moorbrooke.
The questions remain. Will the ghosts that he ran away from in New York come back to haunt him? Will his family every get over the way he treated them and things go back to normal? Will he ever make it as an artist in a way that he can sustain himself on it?

Chapter 7: No Such Thing As Good News
Tumblr media
Tolerate It
Paring: Modern!Tommy Shelby x Original Female Character
Story Rating: R (No minors should read this fic).
Word Count: 2,373
Warnings: Swearing
Description: Tommy Shelby is the owner and CEO of Shelby Company Limited. Starting out as a Bookmaker, Tommy had big ideas to expand his riches. In the past ten years, the company has grown rapidly to expand its business ventures from bars to producing alcohol, manufacturing motor vehicle parts, and exporting. One of the richest men in Great Britain, Tommy Shelby, has it all. Unfortunately, the death of his wife, Grace, left the multi-millionaire mogul alone and depressed. He needed someone to fulfill his needs and deepest darkest desires.
Chapter Summary: Rose wakes up the morning after the gala and her night with Tommy. She meets Isaiah Jesus, who takes her back home. Tommy wants to know more about Louis. We find out that Alfie continues to be a double-crossing little shit. Our favorite Italian mobster catches wind of Tommy taking away his favorite “toy.”
A/N: This chapter was fun to write and brings a lot of new plot development to the story.
Italics represent past conversations.

The remainder of the night was not a quiet or restful one for Rose. No, Tommy still had needs that he wanted to be met. While the first session was the most intense, the rest after were a tad tamer. Well, as tame as it came when dealing with Tommy Shelby. It was like the man didn’t have the words soft and slow in his vocabulary. Rose noted that when it came to actual sex with Tommy, everything had to be fast and hard. He seemed to take great pleasure in prolonging Rose’s orgasm or retreating just when she was at her peak. It was a long, drawn-out game for Tommy.
Tommy had Rose on her back, stomach, knees, and on top of him. For a man who was a notorious chain smoker, his stamina was off the charts. He seemed to finally wear himself out by 3 p.m. With Rose on her stomach and head tucked into the pillow, she was quickly falling asleep. She could feel the light caress of Tommy’s hand up-and-down her back. It was as if the gentle act were lulling him to sleep, and soon Rose could hear his soft snores.
Rose opened her eyes to look at the man sleeping next to her. With the room dark, she could only vaguely make out Tommy’s features. She was able to see a hint of softness to him as he soundly slept. Turning over on her side, Rose pulled up the blankets and fell asleep.
By morning, Rose was awoken by the curtains being drawn back. The blinding sunlight permeated the room. “What the bloody Hell,” Rose groaned and covered her face with the pillow. “It’s too bright.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, miss,” spoke a female voice. “Here, let me close them a little.”
Uncovering her head, Rose looked to see what looked to be a housekeeper in the bedroom.
“Hi, I’m Rose,” she introduced herself to the older woman who appeared to have a friendly disposition.
“Hello, I’m Annie. Mr. Shelby’s housekeeper. I apologize for walking in on you. Must have slipped Mr. Shelby’s mind when he left for work this morning.”
“What! He’s gone? What time is it?” Rose asked, looking for a clock.
“It’s ten in the morning, dear. Would you like me to fix you some coffee or tea?” Annie asked sweetly.
Rose was about to get up but realized she was still naked. She could not believe she overslept or that Tommy left without any sense of ‘goodbye’ or ‘see you later.’
“No, thank you. I…if you don’t mind, need to take a shower. Then I will be on my way.”
Annie nodded her head and left Rose alone in the guest bedroom. With the door shut, Rose tossed the covers off of her and grabbed her to-go bag. She pulled out her toiletries, some underwear, socks, a bra, along with jeans and a t-shirt. She also hauled out her running shoes and tossed them on the floor.
For a guest bedroom, the bathroom was huge with a standing tub and walk-in shower. If Rose didn’t have somewhere else to be, she would have opted for a bubble bath. Looking at herself in the mirror, Rose traced every bruise, love bite, and red marks that were plastered over her body.
“He always leaves his mark,” Rose said to herself. She turned on the shower and stepped inside.
The hot water helped ease the soreness Rose was feeling all throughout her body. She lightly washed away any dried fluids that were left on her. Rose more than noticed the soreness between her legs, which would take a while to subside.
When Rose was finished showering, she dried herself and put on her clothes. She did one more look around to make sure she had everything, sent off a quick text to Louis letting him know she was okay and headed downstairs.
Annie warmly greeted her, “I hung up your dress by the door. It is inside the garment cover. I put your shoes in there as well.”
“Thank you. I appreciate that very much. Uh, when did Mr. Shelby leave this morning?”
“The same time he always does, about six o’clock,” the housekeeper answered. “He told me to let you sleep in, but I was unaware of which room you would be in.”
“Yeah, yeah, look, I have to get going,” said Rose and retrieved the garment bag. She slung her to-go back over her shoulder and walked outside the townhouse.
Before Rose could head down the street towards the Tube, an unknown voice called out to get her attention.
“Ms. Turner,” said the voice.
Rose turned around to see a young black man leaning next to a car. She had seen him around previously outside of her house or place of work. Rose suspected this was one of Tommy’s guys he ordered to look after her.
“Yes. What do you want?” she asked, not moving.
“Mr. Shelby told me that you would need a ride back home. I’m Isaiah Jesus,” he said, extending his hand out. When he noticed that Rose’s hands were full, he offered to take her garment bag.
“Thank you. I guess you won’t need directions to my house since I have seen you around,” she said, walking to the car.
Isaiah opened the trunk and put in Rose’s belongings, and ushered to the backseat door, but Rose cut in, saying, “Do you mind if I sit in the front seat?”
“Not a problem, mam,” replied Isaiah with a smile and opened the passenger door for Rose.
The ride back home was quiet except for the sound of music coming from the car stereo. To cut the quietness, Rose decided to speak up. “How long have you worked for Tommy?”
“For a long time,” Isaiah answered.
“How old are you?”
Isaiah laughed, “I’m 21, mam.”
“Okay, you’re sweet, but knock it off with the whole ‘mam’ thing. Call me Rose, okay.”
“As you wish, Rose. My family, well, my father to be exact, has known the Shelby’s a long time. My father’s family immigrated from the Caribbean to England. He met Tommy, Arthur, and John while serving during the War in Afghanistan back in 2006,” Isaiah shared and went on, “It was not the time to be over there, that is for sure. The arrival of the British soldiers in the southern province of Helmand was met with violence from the reviving Taliban. The Afghanis made sure to let our soldiers know that they were not welcomed over there. My dad, his name is Jeremiah, did not come back the same after that, neither did Tommy or his brothers.”
Rose could not believe this young man was telling her all of this, such revealing information. It all started making more sense to her with Tommy’s behavior. He had all of the signs of someone living with post-traumatic stress. And then top it off with his wife, the person he most likely felt comfortable and vulnerable around, diagnosed unexpectedly with cancers, and then dying. No wonder Tommy was the way he was.
“Wait, your dad is Jeremiah Jesus?”
“Yeah,” Isaiah responded, looking over at Rose.
“I have seen him on the news lately. He leads many of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations,” noted Rose.
Isaiah beamed with pride, “That would be him. He’s amazing. Definitely the type of voice and leader we need right now.”
“Yeah, my son has become more socially active at school and around our community. It is a good thing. I want him to be aware of his privileges and use them for good causes,” Rose responded fondly.
When Isaiah pulled into Rose’s neighborhood, he parked the car in front of her house. Both got out of the car, and Isaiah helped retrieve Rose’s belongings from the trunk.
“Thank you, Isaiah, for driving me home. It was nice not having to take the Tube.”
“No problem, Rose. It is my job, after all. I have to get back to London, but someone will be around to look over your house. Have a nice rest of your day,” said Isaiah and tipped his hat to Rose, and retreated back to the car.
Rose walked up to the front door to unlock it and went inside her home. In the car, Isaiah pulled out his phone to call Tommy. By the second ring, Tommy picked it up. “She home?” he asked.
“Yes, Tommy, she is just walked in her house right now,” replied Isaiah, looking over at the house.
“Okay, good. Once Darren shows up, you can leave,” Tommy instructed Isaiah.
Tumblr media
Hanging up the phone, Tommy pinched the bridge of his nose and took in a deep breath. When he let it out, he sat back down at his desk. Truth be told, Tommy did feel bad leaving Rose to wake up alone that morning. But he had to get to work. He knew she needed the rest from the previous night. Tommy did not know why, but when he was with Rose, he became a different person. It was as if he felt freer. More relaxed. More willing to pursue his darker desires than he ever had before. The way Tommy was with Rose, he was never like that with Lizzie.
He was not quite sure what made the two women different. Lizzie, he noticed she would never push back, never quite challenge him. With Rose, he could see there was a fire in her. Tommy especially noticed it last night when she turned the tables on him during his line of questioning. For a second, she caught him off guard but managed to recover quickly. Rose was also more open to his sexual fantasies, whereas Lizzie was never that hardcore. Yes, he and Lizzie would experiment with role-playing or bondage, but it was never to the level he had with Rose.
There was something about Rose that Tommy could not quite put his finger on. While he knew most everything about the woman, he still felt that he didn’t “know her.” That feeling bothered him. He was a man who liked to know everything about everyone and anything. Rose’s son was a factor that he did not know much about.
According to information Tommy gathered, Louis was sixteen years old and attended public school. His birthday was July 3, 2003. He currently was in his 11th year at school, with next year being he would enter as a lower 6th. While his grades were decent, he was active with after-school sports like football or basketball. All in all, Tommy needed to determine if Rose’s son was a liability. He needed to meet the kid himself to determine if that was a fact.
Tumblr media
Once Rose settled down at home, she opened her laptop and looked through her work email. Rose’s boss, Linda, wouldn’t be in the office today. She had to take her husband to a doctor’s appointment. So Rose knew she could get away with not physically being in the office that morning. However, Rose did not foresee herself oversleeping and missing much of the day’s work. She emailed Linda, letting her know that she was not feeling well that morning. Thankfully, Linda believed Rose and told her to rest up.
What caught Rose off guard was when Linda mentioned how beautiful she looked last night.
‘What the fuck,’ Rose said to herself, confused. She reached for her phone and saw the mass of text messages from friends and even her mother, Pam. All wrote how gorgeous she looked at the gala and congratulated her on “bagging” Tommy Shelby. The text from her mother stood out amongst the rest. Pam said she wanted to see Rose and Louis and planned to make a London trip sometime soon. Nothing indicating if Rose’s dad, Geoffrey, would join Pam on the trip. While Rose’s relationship with her mother was somewhat cordial, her relationship with her father was practically non-existent. Geoffrey more than let it be known that he wanted nothing to do with his daughter or grandson. It was one of the big reasons why Rose left Blackpool.
Against Rose’s better judgment, she googled Tommy Shelby. Low and behold, there was an array of articles about him with the mystery woman from last night’s gala, with pictures to boot. A part of her knew this would happen but didn’t quite expect this much attention from her friends, boss, or mother. Thankfully, news in England never lasted longer than 24 hours. Soon, a new shiny toy would be dangled in the face of the nation, and Rose would, literally, be yesterday’s news. She only had about a couple more hours to wait until more important and titillating news came along.
Tumblr media
With a slam of his fist to the desk, Luca Changretta was more than upset. He was angry once he caught sight of the pictures. Luca thought Alfie Solomons was lying when he said that Tommy Shelby had taken something from the Italian mobster. The Jewish gangster never quite stated what it was that Tommy had taken.
“Trust me, mate. You will find out soon enough, eh,” Alfie told Luca over the phone a while back.
“You better not be fucking with me, Solomons. I know you enjoy playing games with Tommy, but I am no fool,” Luca sneered into the phone.
Alfie just laughed, “I’m not fucking with you. No, I wouldn’t do that to ya. I think our boy Tommy needs a reminder of his place, don’t you think. The lad has gotten a bit too big for his britches. Good ol’ Tom thinks he can take anything he wants with no consequences.”
“Again, Solomons, why should I care what Tommy Shelby does?”
“Well, come Thursday morning, be sure to check the London news. Then you will see. Be sure to call me when you do,” Alfie instructed and hung up the phone.
Luca’s first instinct was to brush Alfie off. The man was always playing tricks. However, there was a part of Luca that was intrigued to find out what Alfie was talking about. The pictures of Tommy with Rose infuriated Luca so much that all he saw was red. Blood red. Blood that needed to be spilled.

BACKSTORY:
triggers in order: toxic family dynamic, grooming (nothing super in-depth), kidnapping (? like it was ‘willing’ but no. see next trigger for why), toxic “relationship” (and 11yr age gap w/ a 16y/o we hate it), straight-up captivity, very brief mention of suicide + heroin (very!)
*would like to quickly preface that this isn’t just Dark for the sake of being r/im14andthisisdeep but that’s for a later time **(also! i have markers for where the grooming + Super Dark parts begin and end! -- also, the Super Dark part is all very public knowledge. had articles. media frenzy. first thing that comes up if you google her name) *** also. if u need it then a tl;dr is below this section hfkldsa
alice audrey adams was born to the type of family that names all of their children alliterative names ( however, they sadly didn’t get their own kardashian-style show )... alexis adams (working name, utp if taken as a wc)... alfie allison adams (working name, utp if taken as a wc)... born to anna adams and allen adams... we hate it here.
as u can see... all of the kids were basically named after allen... they all had ‘al’ names.... extremely confusing
plot-twist: THAT’S the darkest part
the adams were very concerned with public image. as a family in the upper echelon, they simply had to be! a narcissist father, a distant mother, put in competition with her siblings — there was no truly healthy dynamic in the household. but they looked good. they went to church every sunday, a ‘wwjd’ sticker on the back of her mother’s car. they did just enough activities and took just enough trips together to get the image across. they threw parties. they attended parties. they were the picture perfect american family — they even had two cats in the yard! life used to be so hard!
of course, in reality, this all left ms alice quite the lonely gal. but don’t worry! she didn’t turn to hedonism! lord no! instead, she turned to other people. a lot of friendships — couldn’t tell if they were real or #fortheclout — but at a point, did it matter?
grooming tw: it all came to a screeching halt when she met luke johnson, the son of their neighbors. he came back from california to georgia to visit family, care for his ailing father. oh, he was a good man! sure, he was ‘somewhat’ older than her — 27 when she was 16 — but he was such a good, handsome young man! and they were all still calling him young man, after all.
alice ‘began’ a torrid affair with luke after about a month into his visit. although she saw no immediate wrong in it, he insisted she keep it a secret ‘for the time being’ — which really just made it all the more exciting! he made all the storm clouds that hovered disappear.
one day, the levee broke for alice (still figuring out what exactly happened because i don’t wanna go too dark since this is already extremely dark, but trust that it had something to do with her parents and was just enough to push her over the edge). convinced luke was the only safe person, she turned to him. knowing their small community would catch on and essentially exile him, he took that opportunity to convince her to go back to santa monica with him where they could ‘start anew’ after his father’s death.
there are a few details i plan on adding regarding like. how legality playing into it. but i may just reserve those for an official bio lhakfsdfj
**BEGINNING OF SUPER DARK** for a while, there was the question of whether they should consider it a kidnapping or not. she went with him willingly, but she was still underage (and… you know, that age difference… the power dynamic... gross y’all). the adams insisted that it was (bc it basically was lbr) — primarily because it would make them look far better — but the community still questioned the logistics and legalities of it all… ugh. did the police really wanna deal with that? ugh.
in any case, on the other side of us america, autumn was nearing. alice would have the very occasional inquiry over how school would work (very occasional! don’t worry, luke!), over the logistics of her new life… and, after receiving multiple calls from various friends (in addition to her siblings) that sounded genuine, began wondering… if she’d made the right choice. questions about him.
when she began bringing up the idea of going back — at least for the school year!! — he would continuously remind her that she was not old enough to buy herself a plane ticket (and he was not about to do that). she also couldn’t rent a car yet (and he certainly wouldn’t let her take (one of) his car(s)!). but most importantly? he loved her. and she loved him. (what a creep!)
so, for a hot second, it seemed like she was stuck. damn legalities!! damn love!! you know, until she texted her older sister back with all of the problems that only being 16... and “in love”.... caused. her sister offered to fly down, buy her a plane ticket, and fly back with her.
when luke saw this (with all the unrestricted access to her phone he had so he could block, delete, and manipulate as he pleased), he confronted her. things went awry. she wound up in his budding wine cellar (which he soon emptied, of course… those merlots :( ….). he messaged back and, as her, said it was actually all good!! luke had figured out the logistics and she could call whenever she wanted!!
and those calls became frequent! because she would pick up when luke held it up to her! because she was pretty sure luke would kill her if she didn’t!
she wasn’t sure how long it was until she was officially Found. it took what was ruled a suicide by luke, a shot to the head and heroin in his system, to finally get any authority’s attention. all she knew was that she went to santa monica in mid june and she stopped seeing regular daylight by late july. so some time in august to some time in april… **END OF SUPER DARK + GROOMING**
she was returned to georgia shortly after and everything was different. from herself to her friends. but everything was also the same. from her room to her family. it was all… teasing. she began going to therapy, but she really sucked at it?? so she just let her therapist rely on various articles that covered the event. because it had been a media circus. good enough, amirite??
she didn’t have the will or patience to put on that peppy facade she’d had before, but there were still a few things she found a smidge of joy in. music (although her taste had… slightly altered and wow! it’d been almost a year since she’d picked up that bass!), videography… just those small things, you know??
for the first half of the ~ 2014 fall semester ~, she attempted actual school. really was not working out. with, for probably the first and only time, her parents’ approval and understanding, she dropped out and studied for a ged -- shorter and self-led -- instead.
she passed with a pretty decent grade... but it’s been argued that she really shouldn’t have gotten into pratt institute (she was at least realistic and didn’t apply to, like… cornell), but she did. national news helps.
while in the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, she learned of masters. she submitted an application as a joke — because her grades sucked!!!!! — but guess who got a job?? oh, she could pretend it was because her selected portfolio was actually genuinely good… but, man… we all know…
fun fact: my uncle applied to harvard as a joke. some twenty-five years later, we still haven’t heard back :\
she… continues to suck. like… she kinda wants the place to eventually burn down?? figuratively speaking (or is it…) but ya, for all the monopolizing she has seen turn people Evil?? but the hell can she do about it… just gotta make sure she keeps her in-house videographer job… maybe she can do something about it when she like… is capable. fuaihoelwdjkn
she sees an in-house therapist and i’d say ‘good for her,’ but it was mandated l m a o
doesn’t talk about herself all that much!! but that might not matter for some people, yk?? ugh journalism <3
y’all im so bad at ending intros.
TL;DR:
(consult above trigger list): bright kid in a super rich and toxic family because obviously. everything they did was just to look good <3 also they all had ‘a’ names which is the biggest tragedy of all :( ‘fell in love’ when she was 16ys/o with a 27y/o who was visiting to care for his father in his final days. had a torrid affair. creep. creep (luke) basically made her ‘fall in love.’ she thought creep was the only safe person at one point and creep was like ‘wanna go back 2 santa monica w me?’ and she was like ‘yes.’ and everyone was like ‘was this kidnapping... we cant tell....’ then he became even more possessive when she started questioning him and some logistics. when she finally found a way she could go back to georgia for a spell, he was like ‘no u can go in my wine cellar btw i will be taking all of the wine out.’ he kept her there from august to april and... only reason he didnt keep keeping her was bc he was Caught so. back to georgia where the devil went down. everything was Worse. even the things that were the same. but hey, the sob story that landed her in the news plenty of times got her into a college she shouldn’t have gotten into and gave her a leg-up in a joke application for a job at masters (in-house videographer). really bad at doing her work but like... fuck the man i guess??
PERSONALITY + HEADCANONS:
has no time for Fake Nice (which, as a born southerner, she’s really good at sniffing out!). has no time for arrogance. kind of makes her at odds with the nyc upper class...
on that note, still got a lil bit of some georgia twang
she lets herself indulge in various vices, but has left a previous hedonist status. weed and alcohol are still pretty common, but everything else is kept at arm’s length.
also, while on that topic, she Does Not drink wine. being trapped in a cellar... kinda makes u averse. like. literally despises it. will go on autopilot and make it KNOWN if offered wine.
also ALSO while on that topic, after looking it up and seeing she fits the new york city requirements, she has a medical marijuana card <3 the one good thing, if u ask her, to come out of therapy/psychiatry <3 will not show it off unless absolutely NECESSARY bc then it gets personal or <3 will lie about why and say it’s like for epilepsy or sumn unless ur rolfe but <3 she has it <3
at odds with herself. enjoys the company of others, definitely has a history of being an extrovert, but has become very selective with the company she keeps.
VERY private person! has had enough public standing!
...has occasionally used her story to advance her tho bc it’s her national newsworthy tragic story and she can exploit it if she wants <3
when good charlotte said “i don’t wanna be in love”?? she felt that. her last ‘relationship’ ruined that for her <3 save her <3
used to be really into pop! bc pop is fun! she loved some britney (i mean... she still does... how can u not!)! but. her taste has changed drastically. rarely listens to pop. has traded britney for like.... hole and the like.
her parents didn’t use this as the basis for her name but,, 2 me,,, she’s named alice for a reason <3 gotta luv alice in chains <3
y’all i found a youtube comment on a video called ‘nirvana - half the man i used to be’ (the song was, in fact, ‘creep’ by stone temple pilots) and it’s <3 her music taste <3 click here for it <3
the above said, dresses like she’s in seattle in the early 90s.
her rumor is true btw she DID catfish david hasselhoff and she will proudly tell u. it’s her best accomplishment.
completely stopped talking to her parents and got cut-off a while back ago so now she’s livin like the Prols
which is how a rich kid one of my profs once advised referred to his classmates.... hilarity ensues.
the above in mind, her parents say she’s testing the waters as a ‘normal person’ to save face. they can’t have anyone knowing their family isn’t perfect <3
she has a pet turtle whom she named “dr. turtle,” although he’s constantly referred to as “doc” or “the doc.” he has his own youtube channel and tiktok account.
she has a wall full of evidence that courtney love did not kill kurt cobain... it makes sense, believe me.
became a vegetarian...... partially because it was different from her original life and a way to control something, partially because this commercial made her feel SO BAD.
literally her default mode is stoned like... a totally sober alice is rarer than a nessie sighting
when she was 18, before she could ‘hold her liquor’ as well as she can now, she got a lil too drunk and now has a portrait tattoo of courtney love on her forearm. but it was done well at least!!
kind of ironic considering her career, but RARELY posts on any social media site except twitter. after the media circus in 2014 and All Eyes On Her, she’s just..... so tired...... of ppl seeing her face and being like ‘omg ur that wine cellar bitch!’
(drugs tw) has become more and more Addicted to playing around with fate. j chill on a ledge, talkin to some pals, but deciding it’s a good idea to swing her legs on the wrong side of ledge? totally! mixing a lot of alcohol with opioids which she is not accustomed to? DEF!! (end tw)
more to come!!
CONNECTION IDEAS:
i have two (2) queued up!! but while we wait for them to post, i’ll just… link them over here: 1, 2
muse u <3 the other half of her subplot from the main <3
her older sister!
her younger sibling!
some of the basics!! you know: close pal, roommate, drug buddies (but she gotta hit them up), fwb, ons, frenemies, enemy
ppl who recognize her from the 2014 luke johnson articles and have either brought it up or,,,,,,, act Awkward™
cld be fun 2 just have like. a jam bud. someone who plays any instrument and they j. jam sometimes.
ppl she sells. some of her medical marijuana to. bc yk what weed may be legal in nyc now but,,,, she’s still found a way to be broke she will accept anything. and also it just became legalized THIS YEAR so!!
i have a budding wc page @ https://escxpiism.tumblr.com/wcs (and when i say budding, i MEAN budding) so feel free 2 check it out!!
more to come!!

Roguish Women Part 21
Summary: Kate Rosseau is an American who fled to Paris to escape her past life. Now she's dancing and playing the part of a courtesan at the Moulin Rouge. There she meets Tommy Shelby who thinks she can be useful in expanding his empire. But has he been blinded?
Part 21: The moment Kate has been dreading for years.
Tumblr media
Kate wasn’t sure if she could move at all. But she didn’t even want to see the man in front of her. Everything about him sickened her. He had deep brown eyes but there was hardly any emotion in them other than smug self-assuredness. His dark hair wasn’t slicked back as it usually was. In fact, he wasn’t wearing the same airs he usually did. Not the expensive clothes, polished shoes, gold watch. It indicated to her that he hadn’t been conducting business, but traveling. Traveling from London to Birmingham to catch her off guard.
He stepped toward her with a smile. “No words for me? None at all?”
“I have a gun on me.” She spat out, trying her best to sound fearless. There were so many men who she could dismiss, men she would never be afraid of, men she could take over in minutes. But Santo was different. He knew things about her. He could control her if he wanted to.
“You’re not gonna kill me, you’re smarter than that.”
“Yeah? Seems like a smart idea to me.” She lowered her hand to the edge of her jacket, prepared to reach to her holster tucked beneath.
“Because you know the repercussions already.” He stuck a hand in his pocket, making Kate flinch. “S’alright.” He held one hand up like he was soothing a spooked horse. “Here.” He pulled something out and reached his enclosed fist out to her.
Kate remained on her front steps, watching him warily. “What is it?”
“What, you think I’ve got a live snake in here or somethin’? A spider?” He chuckled. “C’mon.”
She glared at him but stepped down to hold out her palm. Santo gently dropped something gold into it. Still cautious but curious, she examined the piece of jewelry. Her breath caught in her throat when she recognized. The oval-shaped locket wasn’t anything expensive. It was badly tarnished from decades of being worn for so many years. It was the same locket her father had given her mother when they were just lovesick teenagers. It was the locket that her mother had gifted to her when she became of age. It was the locket she had lost when she fled America.
“Where did you find this?” She whispered.
“In Boston, you dropped it on the street before you disappeared.” He answered.
Her expression hardened. “When you set my building on fire.”
He nodded slightly. “I can admit my methods were harsh back then.”
Kate’s fingers curled around the necklace, not willing to let it go again. “You haven’t changed at all.”
“Now, how would you know that? You’ve been running around Europe while I’ve been trying to find you. You don’t know how I’ve changed.” He took another step toward her, almost testing the waters to see how far he could get before she threatened to shoot him again.
She tensed up but didn’t move away. “Was anyone killed?” She asked the question that had been haunting her for years. The screams coming from the burning apartment building still kept her up at night. She never knew if her neighbors were saved or perished. She had no idea the destruction Santo had caused. And yet while he lit the fire, she felt responsible for giving him reason to.
“Come now, Katie, that’s not what I’m here to talk about.” He said in an almost unrecognizably gentle voice.
“I know why you’re here. You’re not going to get what you want.” Kate crossed her arms over her chest, holding her mother’s necklace close to her.
“Could we talk inside?” He gestured to the door.
“You won’t be able to kill me in there and get away with it.” She asserted.
He chuckled and shook his head. “I don’t want you dead, micina. C’mon, let’s talk inside.” He passed by her and went up the steps.
It was against her better judgment to let him in. The man she’d been hiding from. But she knew she wasn’t going to get rid of him easily. She wondered if she cooperated even just a little, he might be more lenient. Besides, she was self-assured that if he did try to harm her, she could fend him off.
So, with a deep breath, she went back to the door and unlocked it. She let Santo inside. He acted as if it were an old friend’s home, taking off his hat and coat and hanging them on the wooden pegs by the door.
Feeling awkward and on edge, Kate led him into the kitchen. She sat down and pulled out a cigarette to calm her nerves.
Santo slowly walked behind her, taking in the surroundings as if each piece of her personal belongings were artifacts in a museum. “I didn’t think I’d find you in a place like this.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She asked defensively.
He chuckled and finally found a spot to sit at the table. “I mean, I remember the way you used to live in Boston and Chicago. I mean you used to stay at the Palmer House and the Omni. You knew people, I mean for fuck’s sake Crowninshield wanted to put you on the cover of Vanity Fair.”
Kate averted her eyes. They were memories she had chosen to set aside. The lavish lifestyle she once had. Things people in Birmingham didn’t know about. The circles she ran in afforded her things that perhaps someone like her didn’t deserve. Things she ate up because she was just a young woman who wanted the world. It all seemed well and good until she attracted the interest of very dangerous men. One of whom was sitting in her kitchen.
“I was different then.”
“Hm.”
Kate loosened the grip she had on her locket. Instead, setting it on top of the table in a neat pile. “Just tell me what you want, Santo.”
“It’s not really about what I want, micina. It’s about what you want.” He proposed. “Is this really where you want to be? Stuck in this filthy city? You want to be locked up for something someone else did? You’re so much better than that.” He urged.
“You don’t know anything about this place.” She muttered. He made it seem like she was locked up in hell.
“But I know the people you’ve been running with.” His eyes darkened with disapproval. “Thomas Shelby. Him and his brothers don’t know their fucking place. I heard what they did to Kimber. I know what they’ve done. Now you’re suddenly a favorite of his? Where do you think that’s going to lead, Kate?” He questioned.
“Fuck off.”
“And even in London, you managed to find the lowest of the low. Alfie Solomons.”
“Don’t you fucking dare.” She warned, not about to allow him to talk shit about a man who actually respected her for the person she was.
Santo took the hint and backed off a bit. “I’m just saying, there’s so much more you were meant for. When was the last time you danced? Do you still have your shoes?”
She did. The ballet pointe shoes that she adored so much. They were perfectly broken in and allowed her to lift up inches beyond how tall she usually stood. She felt like a different person when she laced them up. Someone more elegant and refined. That’s why she didn’t take them out of the box that was carefully tucked under her bed. They would remain there until she was free. Free to finally dance on stage again with a production. Free to have enough space to practice her leaps and spins.
“Kate, that’s all you ever wanted. To be a dancer no one could take their eyes off of. You didn’t want all this mess. Not here or in America. I can give you more. I can give you what you want. Any company will take you on. You’ll be the lead in every production.” He enticed her with bedazzling dreams of some utopia back in America. “You won’t have to worry about money or anything. I’ll take care of you until the day I die.”
She was absolutely sick to her stomach. Everything Santo was promising her was so alluring. To finally be free of the burden she’d been carrying for so long. To finally dance again. To put her murky past behind her and just shine. But then she looked into his eyes. There was still nothing there. No emotion, no adoration, no concern. He didn’t hold the same feeling that Tommy. She could recall seeing an array of strong expression in those blue eyes. But Santo never showed her anything. Nothing. Not the respect that people in Birmingham and London did. He never laughed with her like she laughed with John and Arthur or Alfie. Never confided with her like she did with Ada or Lizzie or Polly. He never held her heart in his hand like Tommy did.
“I don’t want that.” She replied. “I may have at one point, but I don’t anymore.”
A flash of anger passed across his face but he seemed to try and suppress it. “So, I can’t convince you with anything? Designer clothes, five-story town-house on Beacon Hill, cars? Nothing?”
She shook her head. “No.” She knew what she wanted. She wanted Tommy. She wanted the Shelby family. She wanted the relationships she had cultivated over the last couple of years.
“Well.” He cleared his throat and stood. “I suppose I can’t force you into anything.”
It was surprising to Kate that he was ceding so quickly or easily. “Um…okay.”
He pointed to the locket. “May I?”
Wary, she nodded and stood up. Santo picked up the locket as she brushed her hair away from her neck. He placed it around her neck and fixed the clasp.
When she expected him to step away, instead he grabbed her by the neck. His fingers dug into her throat, threatening to completely cut off her air supply. She reacted quickly out of shock, scratching at his hands to get him off her.
But he only tightened his grip and leaned in close to her ear. “You’ll come back to America with me, whether you like it or not.” He hissed. “I’d give you the fucking world and you turn me down? Not happening.”
“You can kill me.” She rasped, still clawing at his skin and trying to elbow his torso. “I don’t give a fuck.”
He let out a low chuckle. “I know you don’t. That’s why I won’t kill you. If I had wanted you dead, you never would have made it out of Boston alive. No, no, I’m not going to kill you. I’m going to kill those fucking gypsies that you seem to like so much. I’ll kill that fucking Jew if I have to. I’ll make you watch as I burn down this disgusting city. I’ll make you watch as I slit their throats.”
Tears began to slip down Kate’s cheeks. She had been so naïve to think Santo would let her off the hook. This was much more like the man she once knew. Violent and psychotic. “Please.”
“Please? Please what? You want me to spare their lives?” He asked in a simpering tone. “Do they really mean that much to you? Huh?”
Kate felt so weak crying in front of him. She always expected that if he returned, she would either kill him or at least fight tooth and nail. But there she was, crying and helpless against him. She couldn’t kill him. Not when the Changrettas were already breathing down Tommy’s neck. Not when he had so many other allies who would be willing to cross the Pond to teach him a lesson. She couldn’t bring harm to the Shelbys. “I’ll do anything. Just leave them.” She gasped for breath.
“Oh, micina, I thought you learned not to catch feelings for others. They can always be used as your weakness.” He tsked sarcastically. “Very well. If you go willingly, I’ll leave them all be.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek making her stomach flip with disgust. After a few more moments, he let go of her neck and stepped away from her.
Kate felt her knees buckle as she rubbed her throat and took a few shaky breaths.
“I’ll get tickets to the next ship. Should be less than a week.” He straightened up and acted like everything was all well and fine. I would keep you company for the night but I don’t want to spend another second in this dumpster.” He sniffed. “And you’re smart enough to know that if you run, I’ll keep my promise. Every single one of them will die and it’ll all be your fault.”
She nodded. “Okay.” Her voice was weak and didn’t even sound like her own. “I’ll be here tomorrow.”
Santo smiled, victorious. He had finally won. “Good, sleep well.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
Kate didn’t spare any time. She went right to the phone once Santo left. Her calls to the office, the betting shop, and Arrow House all went unanswered. No one seemed to be around or willing to pick up the phone. She stayed up all night trying to call everyone but didn’t get a response.
Finally, the next morning, she got through to Polly.
“Is Tommy still in Warwickshire?”
“Kate?”
“Is he still there?”
“Yes, we were supposed to meet with him today. He didn’t say to bring you…”
“I need to speak with him.”
There was a soft sigh over the phone line but Polly didn’t seem to have the energy to argue. “Alright, I’ll come by to pick you up."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The door to Tommy’s study was locked when Kate tried to barge in. Ada looked alarmed that she had shown up.
“He didn’t need to talk to you today.” The Shelby sister tried to intervene.
“Well, I need to talk to him.” She insisted and banged on the door. “Tommy, open up!”
Polly rand Ada exchanged looks but neither of them knew what was going on. Kate hadn’t disclosed anything to Polly on the drive over.
Finally, the knocking on the door got Tommy to open it. He was stone-faced and didn’t say a word. Instead, he moved right past her.
“Tommy, I need to talk to you there’s something going on and it’s-”
He just kept walking, right out of the room and out of the house entirely.
Close to tears, Kate followed. “Tommy!”
His footsteps crunched across the gravel as he made his way toward the stables.
She finally broke down in tears. Everything was too much to handle and she couldn’t hold her composure for another second. “Tommy, please!” She sobbed.
The agony in her voice made him finally stop and turn around. There was clear pain written across his face. Their last interaction obviously had put them both in drastic moods.
“I’m so sorry, this is all my fault.” She choked out.
He wasn’t sure what she was referring to. Whether it was about walking out on him when he expressed his love for her, or not. But he didn’t have the strength to turn away from her. “Sorry for what?” He walked back toward her.
Too overwhelmed, she just let out another sob and shook her head.
“Kate…” That’s when he noticed the fingerprint-shaped bruises around her neck. “Who did this to you?”
She could hardly breathe right, she was all out of sorts. “Santo. Santo did it.”

CHAPTER 1
-----------------
Dough.
Sticky, pale, mush that stuck to nearly every surface around him. On the rolling pin, on the flour-dusted counter top, around his fingertips and under his nails. He grunted, pushing the rolled white sleeves of his button-down further up his forearms and out of the mess.
Alfie was a simple man of simple heritage. He was raised under two Cockney natives; his father, a poor, ginger-haired beggar who couldn’t stand straight nor earn a penny for anyone but himself, and his mother, a woman always adorned in mud-caked boots and a white apron tied around her waist - a maid. She worked in the kitchen of a wealthy household; a Lord and his Lady who were blessed with a plentiful inheritance. Alfie grew up among their children, riding ponies and playing with sticks whenever they weren’t occupied with school. He’d collect firewood in the winter for the kitchen stove, and in the summer, he’d feed and tend to the farm animals.
Alfred’s mother was a pale, plump brunette woman with eyes the color of the earth. Freckles lay scattered among her rosy cheeks, crows feet around her delicate eyes. In the colder seasons, Alfie would march into the kitchen with kindling for the stove and recognize that delicious scent. He’d dust his hands off and plop onto a stool in front of his mum, watching intently as she rolled out the pie crust. She was known for making her warm, apple crisp tarts; the family of the estate would gather around the dining table for just a single bite, and Alfie was no exception to this. In exchange for his mother’s work, Alfie was allowed to live in the attic of the home, attending to many of the daily tasks around the house. To Alfie, all seemed well in the world. He was a happy boy, and his parents loved him dearly.
It wasn’t until his thirteenth birthday that it all withered away.
Now, he was 31 years of age, making his mother’s apple tarts from memory. He kneaded the dough with expert technique, rolling out every bubble and clump of flour he could find. The chains of his golden necklaces chimed together as he worked, repeating the same movements over and over until he was satisfied. The room was made of wood the color of cappuccino. An old, battered rug sat beneath the work table where Alfie stood with hard concentration, light peering through the dusty windows that looked out onto the streets of London. A fire was burning brightly in the stove behind him, crackling in anticipation. It was quiet - something that Alfie had learned to appreciate long ago.
As he brushed his callused hands over the flour-covered apron he wore, the door to his left creaked open. His head turned slowly to the intruder, grunting at the presence.
“What?” He croaked with exasperation, rolling his eyes towards the boy standing in the doorway. Alfie leaned over the work table, supporting himself by gripping either side.
“Thomas Shelby.” The boy adjusted the papers on his clipboard, and looked expectantly at Alfie.
Ollie was practically his son at this point. He was discovered one rainy Tuesday on a dirt road that went straight into London. Ollie was young, bruised, and dirty, his hair matted and his clothes torn; but worst of all, he was alone. Despite being the ripe age of sixteen and penniless, Alfred had no other moral option but to take the boy in. Now, Ollie is 21 years old, with a wife and children and a home to call his own. Ollie never hesitated sharing his fortune with Alfie, but there was something about his boss that always seemed hollow. With this, Alfred rejected the invitation each time.
Ollie shifted his weight from one foot to the other, waiting expectantly for Alfie’s response.
“What about him?” Alfie furrowed his eyebrows towards Ollie, watching him flip through a few papers in the file he held.
“He has a meeting with you,” Ollie plucked a watch from his pocket, “in two minutes.”
Alfred nodded in understanding, beckoning for Ollie to let Thomas down into the small bakery. Ollie then retreated up the stairs, only returning a few seconds later with Mr. Shelby by his side.
“Mr. Shelby,” Ollie gestured for Thomas to go inside the small bakery, softly closing the door afterwards.
Tommy held a crinkled, white cigarette between his teeth, and sat on the ledge of the window facing Alfie.
“Hello, Alfie,” he mumbled, fiddling with his cigarette. “Do you know why I’m here?”
Alfie pinched the bridge of his nose, the golden rings on his calloused fingers standing out among the pale skin beneath them. “’Ello there, Tom. How is your morning so far?” Alfie picked his head up and pursed his lips, looking expectantly at Tommy.
Thomas’s eyes did a once-over of Alfie, his lips parting in subtle disbelief at the man. “Peachy keen.” Tommy stood up and began to pace the room, exhaling smoke every five seconds.
“Oi, I rather you not do that in here, mate. You see this pie?” Alfie gestured to the unbaked pie sitting before him, “It’s me mum’s pie. Her own fucking recipe. And, now, you - a complete fucking smoke stack, come in here and start puffing away onto the pastry.” Alfie takes the pie and slides it above the fire, waving his baking mitts in the air to rid the area of cigarette smoke. “Poor form, mate.” Alfie pulls a wooden stool up to the work table, perching himself on top of it before urging Thomas to continue.
Mr. Shelby rolled his eyes at Alfie’s flippant attitude and put the cigarette out on the window ledge. “Alfie, I’m here to give you your earnings. You can either take it, or leave it.”
“One of your siblings, right?” Alfie placed a pipe from his pocket between his teeth, lighting it with an old match. He crossed his arms, tilting his head at Tommy. “Not sure how much your brother will enjoy starting from the bottom here.” Alfie rubbed the soot between his fingers, examining the way it blackened his nails. “Shelby don’t mean shit ‘round here.”
“She’ll get along just fine.”
Alfie choked as he inhaled the tobacco, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “She?”
Thomas merely nodded in agreement, folding his hands on his lap.
“Right, you’ve really fucked with me now, haven’t ya’? You’re giving me a bloody female? To fight the fucking wops? Has Thomas Shelby gone completely fucking mad?” Thomas pursed his lips in contemplation, waiting for Alfie to finish his rant.
“Having a woman on your side will give you the upper hand,” Thomas checked his watch, “as I, myself, have found.” He muttered the last part. Alfie stared at him in disbelief, watching as Thomas stood up, and lit the cigarette between his teeth. “She’ll be ‘round.” Tommy stopped before opening the door and pointed at Alfie. “If she is treated poorly, Alfie, there will be hell. Make sure you’re here ‘round three.”
Alfie groaned and folded his hands together, resting his head on them. Thomas left without saying another word, while Alfie was left without words to say.
