And here we are again… kit “add-ons” being put behind a paywall for 3 weeks.

Just because you recoloured or tweaked meshes a little bit DOES NOT give you the right to paywall these items.

I’ve also realized that people are doing this more and more. Editing EA meshes the slightest bit, calling them their own and then putting them up for early access.

There are SO many creators that make original meshes, put lots of time and effort into making ORIGINAL content and are not charging people for it. I am all for making money off of your work, but so many creators are blinded by it.

People will support you if they want to. If you deserve it, it will happen, i promise.

•before I get into my criticism, I do want to point out that the graphics are BREATH-TAKING, and the amount of new cutscenes+animations is really epic too(of note, the rework of guiding light is SO gosh darn pretty!!) The minecart reveal with seek’s chase was entirely unexpected and worked so well build up hype. The finishing sequence with the seek lake was also really cool and not like anything we’ve seen before. As a weirdcore/dreamcore enjoyer I find myself quite enjoying the more prominent role seek plays in the game on this floor.

Okay with that out of the way

•you’re telling me the major antagonist of the floor is an overgrown screech recolour?!?! Be so fr, lowkey the idea for the gurmble was so lazy, especially considering how few new entities we’ve gotten. I don’t mind the giggles, they’re a clever overhead alternative to the snares and the joke with them being similar to screech is fun. But making the bigger version of what is essentially a gag the main antagonist? Idk man. I’d take Figure returning anyday. Especially now that Seek has a rivarly with Grumble, that would work to interestingly with Figure

•Speaking of figure, how they’ve massacred my boy. No longer a major event but a nuisance. Doesn’t even have any new animations or anything, well aside from falling from the vent

•before the seek chase, it is honestly so, so mid. Sure, the cart mechanic is alright but. It just doesn’t do it for me. Boring af. There’s so many gimmicks, like the fire trap rooms, but it feels like just that. A bunch of new gimmicks, without a solid foundation to make it interesting and convince me to feel invested

The next thread of thought I have:

•it is trying so hard, so so hard to be like pressure. Yes, I know pressure is a fangame of the original doors but. Really? It’s so obvious and feels pathetically desperate to me

•take the sheer AMOUNT of the new light items

•speaking of light, hooo boy have they massacred my boy jeff trying to imitate sebastian 😭 Dawg’s supposed to be calm, that’s his whole THING. But nahh, we had to play copycat and make him get annoyed at being flashed with light too.

•the overgrown rooms with a tree in the middle, that feels like a literal copy

I recently figured out how to recolour items - so I recoloured that double layer shirt from Snowy Escape! I don’t know if it’s any good - so I would be so grateful if you could leave me a comment on what you think! I thought I would post it here to gather comments on it, feedback etc.

It’s literally my first week ever of using photoshop I’m still trying to figure out the ropes, so if anyone knows any good tips let me know!

Used patterns from Mothz  a couple retro patterns I found online, don’t know the names of the creators sorry, and colours from @solistair​ Hibiscus palette <- did I do that credit right?

Yes she isn’t wearing trousers, I thought it would be best to show the full shirt, and then I put her in some trousers to show off how it looks when your sims aren’t flashing the public, the pattern with the trousers is the same as the one behind her that is hidden, so you’re not missing anything.

the thing with the sc cost of running pets (and clothes! and tack! and possibly horses!) in sso is just that compared to “other games and other stuff you could buy for the same irl value” it doesnt seem worth the cost. it seems overpriced.

i dont care about the cost of jorvik ponies or anything else in-game. i care about the exchange rate of irl money to sc, and comparing what you get. there is obviously an aspect of “sse needs to earn back the work they put in” - but we don’t know where those limits are (without finding out how many of each pet, clothing item, etc, that they sell, and whether they would sell fewer or more if they lowered the costs, etc) and can’t say anything about them. afaik, there is no evidence that the only way for sse to earn back their investments is to sell a low/medium quality 3D pet for $10, or a decent quality 3D horse for $20. we DO know that the company is doing well, paying its staff well and treating them well (seemingly - ofc i dont work there), and can afford upkeep on many servers, just as a note.

for a comparison of something i also think is a dumb cost, is horses in rival stars horse racing (mobile), another game i enjoy! $30 for a coat recolour and some stats (horsey go brrr). there is only 1 horse model in rival stars. no different model or animations or anything whatsoever - literally just a different coat, with the added bonus that you can breed horses so the coat and stats matter. however, i dont think that makes $30 a reasonable cost for a recolour and some numbers, in my personal opinion that im allowed to have about any game. an interesting difference is that rival stars probably has a slightly older target audience than sso (which is interesting just bc adults are supposedly able to make more informed decisions and have their own money, and kids don’t).

obvs, when you sell any product you have to calculate what the expected monetary gain is, and what the expected production costs are, and whether those things will make it worthwhile or not. but you also should think about the actual quality of the product, who your customers are, etc etc... and... there is a point at which, even if “this item took this much work/time/money to make”, if the end result seems more costly than what a reasonable price is, maybe you’re going about the work the wrong way. maybe theres inefficiency in the work methods or poor prioritising if low/medium quality items are costing that much to produce. 

and yeah, anything in sso is a luxury item, playing sso is a luxury, etc, no “extra” sc payments are necessary for gameplay aside from being star rider, etc, all true but not really relevant to my opinion. i also criticise other non-essential digital goods for being overpriced when i see them whether game related or not, and ofc physical goods but less relevant to the topic since they have a different production cost (digital goods have no material or shipping cost and no supply limit).

just my personal opinions and why *i* have issues with the costs of sc (and therefore most, but not all, sc prices in the game). coming from a game dev, artist, and very poor person who thinks a lot about economy without feeling entitled to anything.

I’m going to answer another ask outside of this post that details this but I’ll answer this one here too. The way me and ayoshi do packs is not like a usual collab (in my opinion I don’t think people collab like this). I am good at making meshes. So usually I make a mesh for something and ayoshi makes a base texture that I can use to finish the base of the top/bottom and then we work together to fix any texture issues. Nothing we’ve made has ever been 100% mine or 100% his except for the hairs. Sometimes a mesh is easy but the texture requires a lot of work so it’s more work for him, sometimes I decide I want to try and texture something (like with this AxA I made textures for some of the clothes) and then ayoshi will clean the texture up for me and add some shading for me. So it’s a lot different than what I imagine most collabs are. But I love the way me and him work together and the ability to change something I don’t like because it isn’t just his, it’s ours.

I’m not sure if there are people that specifically only do that but I think there are a handful of creators that get inspired from kpop/music videos and make hairs similar to that. Cause we use EA meshes most of the time the hairs aren’t going to look exactly like the inspiration though. Like I have two hairs that are based off Go Won from loona (Go Won hair and Kelsey Hair) but i don’t think you can tell that just from looking at them.

if you download Sims4Studio and open the package you can make the specular blank but that could cause issues in your game if you play on certain graphic settings. So do it with caution.

EA are a HUGE corporation with a reported 9,800 workers in 2020, they’ve generated a net revenue of over 3 BILLION dollars in its 2020 fiscal year and they own 20 studios.

they’re not your friend, they’re not doing this to try and make the player base it’s built up over the last 21 years happy, the higher ups work day and night coming up with plans and schemes to get you to give them your money. that’s all they see you as.

so when you’re in EA’s comments like “don’t listen to them queen im a real fan and I’ll let you exploit me all you want ❤️❤️❤️” they’re not seeing you as ‘one of the good ones’ they’re seeing you as a sucker they can take for a ride

like idk if these are mostly you get people saying this stuff but don’t fall for it, companies aren’t your friend, they’re not doing this for you, they’re doing this for your money. and if they experience enough criticism for these practices maybe someone up there in EA headquarters will finally try making the sims community happy

make pocket organization easier. it takes like 2 full seconds to pick up something in your inventory. it was faster in the old games to select “pick up” in the menu

dont make the default option when on an item “drop”. instead switch it back to “open present”, “eat”, etc. im sick of dropping everything

make gardening easier. PLEASE. either make flowers stackable or speed up the process of picking up flowers. using the shovel takes two seconds and then you have to fill the holes back up which takes MORE time

I really wish the character customization in pokemon go was better tho. it’s been so long and all they’ve even managed is upgrading from Literally Just Recolour The Same Single Default Outfit to Now There’s Maybe Five Outfits, But You Have To Pay For Them.

And the art style for the protags is just.. so ugly. they look like default unity assets for an entirely different genre of game! And i don’t even get it cos the actual team leaders and professor have way more design thought put into them even though they’re also realistic???

Like they have these weird proportions that are SOOOO ‘default realism mobile mmorpg protag’. Its pretty impossible to make anything that looks like yourself cos you have to be Barrel Chest Man or Weird Supermodel Pose Lady. Makes no sense cos this isn’t remotely a ‘sex sells’ kind of genre! the lady is reaaaally annoying cos of that stupid perpetual pose thing. like its hard to even get a good impression of what your outfit would look like while you’re walking cos you’ve gotta stand all Hip Wildly To The Side And Feet En Pointe. And there’s barely any options to like.. wear pants or shirts with sleeves. And even when you do pick those you’re limited to only super short shorts showing loads of skin or super form-hugging leggings that literally look like you just painted your ass. And the tops are even weirder cos stuff that looks baggy in its item icon is vaccuum sealed on the character model and always has to have Perfect Melon Suction. And these aren’t even outfits that are drawn sexified or anything?? Why are they following laws of sexy american comic supermodel superheroes THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING! I ended up picking the generic Your Team here jacket just cos its the only thing with even the slightest padding to your chest/hips/arms/whatever. Like it doesnt look like a new texture drawn on the same model, there’s SOME DEGREE OF NEW OUTFIT SHAPE MODELLED. But it’s still far from a real baggy casual sort of look, and there’s nothing remotely similar for trousers. i just had to go with whichever colour options have the least detailed shading so i can’t see that weird vaccuum packed yoga pants effect on my avatar’s ass. Which is always raised higher than her goddamn hips somehow and pointing off to the left. WHO IS EVEN ABLE TO STAND LIKE THIS FOR MORE THAN TEN MINUTES? Catwalk model poses only get used for a short show, women don’t go around like that 24/7 when going to the grocery store! Seriously whyyy is the lady model so much more sexualized than the male one, the dude is still a generic Heroic Build but no form of pose AT ALL compared to her, and his outfits never stick to his skin like goddamn glue.

And man its bad for both sides too cos the dude has less clothes options for lots of stuff, but also the clothes he does have are like.. more modelled. Wow look there’s SLEEVES and COATS LONGER THAN HIS WAIST and DIFFERENT KINDS OF TROU! And no matter who you pick you can’t change anything about them aside from colours (very limited ones) and clothes (which are essentially just colours on the girl). All this time and i can’t even get a new hairstyle or different eye shape or like.. any expression on my face?? Or height or weight or age because seriously WHY is everyone a 20 something supermodel, this game isn’t even particularly ‘pokemon for adults’, its supposed to be ‘pokemon for everyone’ so wouldnt it make more sense to have a character that looks like a default that anyone can identify with? Or uhh.. has anything that reminds you of pokemon at all? And WHY ARE THE COLOURS SO LIMITED!! Most stuff either has only one colour or only the three team colours, so like.. fuck you if you like green i guess. There’s ONE SINGLE PINK CLOTHING ITEM IN THE WHOLE THING! For a game so obsessed with making the girl options unneccesarily limited in the name of ‘girly things’, you’d think they would have had more of that! It also sucks cos the default unity esque art style means that colours often.. don’t work. like all of the damn hairstyles look the same unless you pick blonde. They’re all SUPER DARK and its more like a tint on black hair instead of actual brown or red or blue. Like wow did u design that to fuck with me in particular? A friggin cocktease blue that isn’t blue? I DEMAND MY HAIR, DAMMIT! I can’t even do my NATURAL hair colour, geez!

And gahhh i’m so sad cos the legacy costume event things are the closest thing you get to actual different clothing models instead of body paint. But they’re still drawn all weird and stick to your skin way too much or have more skin showing or more of a ‘sexy’ redesign. Like wtf the rocket boots are now some sort of lady gaga style almost-at-your-ass things that contour to my precise thighs as if they were made of sellotape? And the shirt has boobsocks? And the hat is REALLY SMALL AND FLAT FOR SOME REASON? srsly why does that bug me so much, half of the hats are tiny and half of them are huge and Nothing in Between. its like they don’t know how the fuck to model a forehead under a hat, even though they pasted this damn hat over an actually modelled forehead. it looks like your whole head gets flatter! and damn i’m so mad the limited colour options mean i can’t create a good outfit to match the mimikyu hat or The One Singular Pink Hat Or Pink Anything In The Entire Game. Those two are actually big and fit your head right! And are super stylish cute! But nothing else matches unless i wanna switch to a skirt and an even more boobsocky tanktop. TANKTOPS DO NOT STICK TO BREASTS THEY ARE PRETTY MUCH DESIGNED TO BE BAGGY DAMMIT their whole point is to circulate a lot of air and thus be good for sports and stuff. Also most people tend to wear a bra under a tanktop, just sayin. I’m glad the sleeves aren’t modelled correctely, I couldn’t stand seeing sideboob in a goddamn pokemon game...

Follow our COLOR.ME Design director, Kate Reid, as she takes us behind the scenes of this year’s PUNK.LINE photoshoot!

DAY 1: L.A. TO LONDON TO PRAGUE

3:00 pm: I arrive in Prague. Prague is one of my favourite cities in the world – it’s so beautiful! I hop in a taxi to the hotel and drop off my luggage before heading to the model call. The hotel is simple, but it is right next door to the salon we are prepping at. Lately, more zzz’s rank higher than 5 stars!

5:00 pm: We hold our model call at Stolen Salon, which is an urban warehouse with open ceilings, polished concrete and plenty of natural lighting from the big windows that fill an entire side of the salon. After seeing our short list of around 50 models, we have narrowed the pool down to 10 girls. Kevin and Luis take an image of each so we can later sit down and go one by one through all of the shots we need to capture and confirm our six girls for the year’s collection. The models in Prague have legs that extend to the skies and the most perfect skin, which makes me feel like I need to drink more water! When it comes down to choosing the final models, we have to make sure that the girls we choose are open to having their hair cut and coloured.

Since many of the models do not speak English, Lucie, our Production Manager, translates. It’s so helpful having Lucie in the salon because she is a former model who now works behind the scenes. Now it is time to have an open and real conversation about what we can realistically create with colour and what we cannot achieve. The man behind the brand, Kevin, and his husband/photographer, Luis are essential in making sure that everything falls into place perfectly. The combined knowledge of hair colour and photography coupled with the fashion culture of the team allows us to know exactly what will happen and takes any guess work out of the equation.image48:00 pm: We finish the model call and Lucie books the models, shares the details of the shoot, and sets times for their hair appointments. I tidy the salon and begin to organise my tools and my kit for the next day. Now that I have met the models, I know what I am going to create and I want to prepare my station accordingly.  I always overpack; I bring every shade that is on my trend list in multiples. Some of the products I can’t live without are CLEAR, SOFT.VIOLET, 11.0, ICE, SILVER, and 5.86. Bottomless amounts of my favorite textured foil and loads of KEVIN.MURPHY sectioning clips complete my packed essentials.

9:00 pm: Next stop is dinner with the team to discuss our game plan for the shoot. At the table, we have myself, Kevin, Luis, Michael, Lucie and her boyfriend, our stylist, Craig, our STYLE.MASTER, Juha, and our two lighting guys, John and Reuben. Kevin, myself, John, and Reuben are all from Australia, Luis is Puerto Rican, Michael is Austrian, Lucie and her boyfriend are from Prague, and our “Kiwi-turned local,” Craig, now resides in Prague. We exchange stories about past shoots across the globe – Kevin and Luis recently wrapped up a shoot in south Australia in the very same city I grew up in. We talk about our favourite restaurants from the area and bond over our global adventures.

12:00 am: Lights out! Tomorrow is a big prep day and I need my brain functioning at full speed!Color.Me_2016_03_185DAY 2: PREP

6:00 am: I wake up and sip coffee over email. Our bubbly marketing manager, Kiki, has sent me several emails overnight and needs an urgent quote on a trend piece for a popular fashion and beauty magazine, so I send her some thoughts to pass along to PR.

7:00 am: No matter how hectic my travel schedule, I always make time for exercise. We run a heavy prep day, so getting in a workout is key to keeping my energy level high throughout the trip. I head for a 5km run along the river to jump start my day.

9:00 am: Time to colour! I will be colouring six models with our European Education Director, Michael Jung, so it will be a fun day.  On set, I allow myself much more time than I would normally use in the salon, as I love to colour and recolour until it’s perfect. It drives Kevin a little crazy as it is a long day of waiting patiently. He spends the day looking at props and heading to stores to pick out the set for the photoshoot. When the models arrive, I know exactly what we’re doing on each girl so it’s really well-thought out and discussed amongst all of us. I like to post my inspiration pictures on the windows so I can see my colour story. Just in case I have an inspirational idea, this lets me see if it will work and fit in.

11:00 am: Prep day is fully underway. Everyone is in the zone, but we have music playing and the vibe remains casual and relaxed.

1:00 pm: We wrap up our “IN.BLOOM” model and I’m feeling very pleased with the result. The shade was something I had been playing around with all year and the details of the colour are absolute perfection. The model is so angelic – this look is my favourite, so far.Color.Me_2016_09_15732:00 pm: Our stylist, Emily, arrives and begins setting up. She takes turns fitting each model and selecting the wardrobe for tomorrow’s shoot. She has so many bags of clothes – about 40 outfits in total. She hangs everything and steams each outfit, treating them as delicately as you would precious metals. She has a mix of high end (expensive!) designer items and some incredibly affordable options you can find at any mall. She has the models try on several outfits, snapping pictures of each one to review with Kevin.

3:00 pm: I feel bad for the models that have been waiting around all day. We only colour one model at a time so it’s a lot of waiting time for them. I turn up the music in the hopes of making the experience more enjoyable.

5:00 pm: I take a second to admire an absolutely stunning pink rose we just created. The way the light catches the hair is so breathtaking as it has so many dense pastel variations.

7:00 pm: Phew, long day. The models trickle out and we all sit with Kevin recapping the looks. Craig brings out some local grappa that his friend made. That stuff is like drinking rocket fuel and I feel my cheeks flush in two seconds flat.

8:30 pm: We head to dinner straight from the salon with the team and we chat about tones of the hair, location, and everything else down to funny, past photoshoot horrors. We eat at the same market every night; it has a nice European vibe and the food is so fresh – it’s the perfect way to finish the day with the team.

11:00 pm: My head hits the pillow and I fall fast asleep.image3IMG_1794DAY 3: THE SHOOT

9:00 am: We walk to the shoot location and I have a quick check over the colours before diving in.

9:05 am: Once we arrive, the models head straight to makeup with Hristina. Kevin and I have worked with her for 3 years now and he sent her some makeup looks and images in the months leading up to the shoot so that the overall vision is in sync. Each model spends about 45 minutes to an hour in makeup and the results are flawless. Then, Emily arrives and has the clothes set up for the day. The models head to styling and get dressed, which is the final step before shooting. She stays on set all day to assist with any wardrobe malfunctions that might occur, but they don’t – Emily is a pro!

10:00 am: We start on our first shot. Luis is pretty chill and knows which shots Kevin is after.

11:00 am: We have our coffee machine set up and I make everyone coffee – one of my favourite things! Us colourists have done most of our work, so I spend my day assisting the others in any way I can: passing pins, SESSION.SPRAY and DOO.OVER, making sure the models are fed – you name it, and I’m on it! I’m just a runner and love it!

12:00 pm: While most of my work is done, the STYLE.MASTERS are now ON! They have a seamless rotation of models coming in and out of their prep station, so they are literally doing hair non-stop. SESSION.SPRAY seems to never leave Juha’s hand except for when he is reaching for ANTI.GRAVITY or DOO.OVER.Color.Me_2016_14_03532:00 pm: We take a pause from shooting and sit at a table to enjoy lunch together. Photoshoots are always such an incredible bonding experience!

2:30 pm: We go back to work and the hair is looking incredible. There is so much movement and texture in the hair – almost a 70’s vibe.

3:00 pm: Kevin is what we call a “world class wafter”. Between shots, he fluffs the hair, making sure each model has that signature “KEVIN.MURPHY” gently tousled finish.

5:00 pm: The models, all dressed with makeup, styling and colour, are so gorgeous! I can’t help but stare at times as they are so exquisite.

8:00 pm: We wrap for the day. The shoot has been a real success. Everyone involved is a master in their own craft and has incredible respect for one another. When you’re on set, it’s like you almost develop a sort of “hair romance” with each other. The trust and respect felt in that set is unparalleled and can be experienced throughout the entire room.

9:00 pm: We head to a team dinner at a beautiful outdoor restaurant on the Charles Bridge. The people-watching is fantastic; the women in Prague are ridiculously stylish. The view from our spot and the overwhelming feeling of history around us is so surreal. Europeans love to come alive at the table, so dinner ends around 11:30 pm. We head to a bar to grab a little Prague culture and celebrate a successful shoot.
