You’re Cordially Invited (2025) review
Tumblr media
From the director of Bad Neighbours. That checks out.
Plot: A woman planning her sister's ideal wedding and the father of a bride-to-be discover their destination weddings at a remote resort are double-booked. When both parties decide to share the small venue, chaos ensues and disaster awaits.
It’s the beginning of a new year, and the months of January/early-February are always known to be a dumping ground for studios to throw out films that may not be up to par of their regular quality. Then again 2024 as a whole was a pretty disappointing year for movies, so that ‘regular quality’ is up to discussion also. Regardless, we have a new comedy starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. Both talented actors, both were in some great films, known for their solid comedic chops….this should fun, right? Yeah no, this is a very forgettable streaming movie, with very dislikable characters, a basic premise and worst of all a lack of laughs. I can forgive the lack of character depth and narrative originality, but the one thing a comedy sets out to do is to make its audience laugh. You’re Cordially Invited however cordially invites but a few mirthless chuckles.
Naturally in these rivalry themed comedies you get two big stars going at each other’s throats. However you always want to make sure these characters have some element of likability that through all the mess they put one another you may still root for them and enjoy watching their hijinks. However both Ferrell and Witherspoon play truly despicable people. For no reason honestly. Yes, the double booked wedding is an inconvenience, however all the problems and clashes that occur due to this are ones that could have been so easily avoided through calm conversations and compromise, however instead Ferrell and the Spoon of Wither go at each other’a throats and ruin each other’s weddings for sake of evil. So when the expected scene occurs where both parties provide an appropriate sob story as to why this wedding seems so much to them, it feels unrewarding and also pointless. “I mean, I tried to destroy a young woman’s wedding. For literally no reason at all.” is a line that Witherspoon’s character literally proclaims to the end of the movie, juxtaposing my point.
In regards to the jokes, I really did not find this movie that funny. There were indeed a couple of entertaining gags, such as the random alligator sequence, a fake heart attack scene which reminded me of something I’d do, and then the post credit scene that puts the Marvel Cinematic Universe to shame. Also, is it now a new clause in Will Ferrell’s contract since Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga and Spirited that he has to sing in every movie he’s in? I’m not saying he’s a terrible singer by no means but neither is he a great one either. Not complaining though, just an observation. Any-how, I cordially invite you to take a miss on this one and instead go catch up on the Oscar nominees. Except for Emilia Perez - haven’t even seen it but f*** that movie.
Overall score: 3/10

american psycho - s.geto
part of the jjk movie marathon event / movie selection … warnings - suguru's depression ig, i meant to rewrite this but got busy word count - 1.3 K / rating - PG-13
Tumblr media
“Since when are winter weddings all the rage?” you’re twisted in Suguru’s gray sheets (technically, the department store lady had referred to the dark shade as “cheating heart” gray) in a way that cinches around your waist and thighs. Pulling tightly over the heated flesh.
Suguru shrugs with a yawn as he crosses into the barrier of his bedroom, liking the way your curves are wrapped in tousled silk. And liking the way your eyes swing to the corner just to snatch a glimpse of him in his sweatpants. His post-euphoria gleam still clinging like a rosy, honeyed glow to his flushed chest.
You return your gaze to the smooth, dark wood surface of Suguru’s nightstand - littered with stretched hair ties and, of course, wedding invitations from his closest friends. All varying shades of white with dark lettering.
“Ah! Utahime ‘n’ Shoko finally tied the knot,” suddenly, you pout, “I didn’t get an invite…”
“Oh, right,” Suguru throws himself over your legs, and somehow the feeling of his weight crushing yours reminds him of his power with you. When he pulls back and you chase, when you let him press your knees by your ears, when you let him shove your face into the pillows - it’s a wicked fire in his veins. One of the reasons he refuses medications is the fear of that fire being snuffed. Rumors and reviews he obsesses over rather than speaking with his doctor, “Uh- " he shakes his head, black hair fluttering around his shoulders, “Shoko told me she figured we’d just show up together.”
“Why?”
“She thinks we’re dating,” he turns his head, shifting the rest of his body again so he’s lying over you. His head over the swell of your breasts. At your quirked brow, he merely shrugs again, “I dunno what to tell either of you at this point.”
“Tell her we’re not dating.”
“I tried. She doesn’t listen.”
She knows better than both of you.
“Well, the card’s pretty,” you hold it up as if Suguru hadn’t seen it yet.
“I like Yuki and Choso’s better.”
“Oh, yeah!” your body jostles his as you scramble to replace the card in your hand with a new one, “Yuki told me Choso wanted it to be all black with white letters,” you snort, “like some orgy cordial request.”
Suguru ‘tsk’s, “No eye for graphic design.”
Yuki and Choso met because of you and Suguru. After you and Suguru. Specifically, after you and Suguru had already started… whatever this was. Not quite friends. Not quite benefits. Somewhere far, far past both of those.
You’re showing off the invite again, but he’s not paying it any mind. If anything, the selection was a little bland. Basic eggshell cardstock with midnight black lettering and gold accent twists along the edges.
Instead, he thinks about how Choso is only one year older than Suguru. And Choso has a little brother, Yuuji, who is eleven years younger than Suguru and yet is already apparently ‘getting serious’ with some Fushiguro boy from school. Far more than Suguru can say for himself and you.
And now he wonders if you feel that same sinking feeling he does.
Entering his thirties in only a couple of years, and yet to the public eye, he’s miserably single in a fling with his best friend. He could, theoretically, get a girlfriend. But meeting someone new sounds exhaustive. Not to mention, Suguru doubts that he is meant to be loved by a stranger by this point, when he’s no longer naive and malleable and able to suppress his more dangerous thoughts.
Of course, on top of all that is the fact that being with anybody except you sounds like a demented, unusually cruel punishment.
Allowing Yuki and Choso’s invitation to flutter back onto his nightstand, you pluck up another; a giggle is trapped in your chest.
“He’s such a little asshole.”
“Hm?” Suguru tilts his head up at the sound of your voice. This time, he’s greeted by obnoxious silvery characters on a flaky, golden card, “Ah, Satoru? He’s the worst.”
“Like, it’s ugly!” you bring a hand over the back of Suguru’s head, “And he’s not even getting married.”
“He thought it’d be funny…”
“‘Course he did!” you grumble, flipping the card over and glancing over the back, “And he’s got the money to blow on stupid shit like this.”
Suguru also does well for himself. Not nearly as well as Satoru, but he lives comfortably. Satoru was born from parents in the fashion industry, making the man’s entrance into modeling somehow even easier aside from his absolute jackpot in the genetics lottery. Satoru was well-loved.
The jealousy he felt over it bred a great, terrible guilt in his chest that was difficult to swallow every time he was with his childhood friend.
But Satoru was also lonely. Beloved and alone, despite it all.
And Suguru is immature enough to take solace in that fact.
Then there’s him.
“Aw, Kento, too!” you take notice of how Suguru tenses atop of you, his arms squeezing around your waist. Pitifully, you pat his head, “Sorry, I can put it back…”
Kento is exactly the kind of man Suguru wanted to be growing up.
“No, no,” he murmurs, “Let’s see Kento Nanami’s wedding invitation.”
It’s a powdery shade of white, with pure, pitch-black characters raised against the background. Aligned down the center with charcoal black outlining the corners of the card. Something Suguru would’ve seen getting for himself, had he gotten engaged sooner than his junior.
His parents certainly think he should have anyway.
Kento holds himself to every standard Suguru’s parents wanted their son to uphold. All of which he breaks now, by keeping you wrapped in his sheets under his frenzied body while maintaining the title of a ‘bachelor’. He’ll be thirty two years sooner than Kento, but Kento is already the exact man Suguru wants to be.
A respectable job, smooth skin, a house in his own name, a fiance, and the adoration of his community.
All of his neighbors, they don’t truly know Suguru. They know the man in black with long hair that slinks through the halls and lobby, they get to peek at the beiges and grays of his apartment, but they do not know him.
They have no idea what he’s done today, what time he clocked into work, what time he clocked out, where he works, what time he gets home every day, what time he goes to sleep, what he likes most for dinner, what he daydreams of in the shower, what he dreads before bed. And he doesn’t know that of them. They are all just little pieces of each other’s lives for one measly moment in a sharp, short burst of the universe's lifetimes.
And there are so many more people whose lives he isn’t part of. And who are not part of his. People who have no idea he even exists. People he has no idea exist. Therefore, nothing would change if he spontaneously disappeared.
Sure, those close to him would be devastated, but after that…
Japan would not miraculously change in any way. The world would not stop spinning. Space would be just as expansive and overwhelming and mysterious as it always was.
Suguru was one little piece of a massive complex of nonsensical happenings in one of many galaxies, on one of many planets, in one of many countries for a handful of years. Just as billions of other people were.
He wonders if there’s any point to this at all.
“Sugu…?”
“Hm?”
“Are you okay? You’re spacin’ out on me.”
He wonders if you ever feel the same way, or if he’s the only one cursed with this poison in his mind.
And he’s immature enough to believe he just might be.

round up // DECEMBER 24 + JANUARY 25: CROWD vs. CRITIC vs. CHRISTMAS!
Tumblr media
Well, that’s a wrap…on 2024, and on SO IT’S A SHOW!
After 8 years and 7 seasons filled with 200-ish pop culture references, Kyla and I celebrated our love for Gilmore Girls with one last pop culture reference and a lap down memory lane. Though it’s a bittersweet goodbye (unless, you know, Gilmore Girls returns with another revival season), I'm grateful for every minute we podcasted together. And the best way to keep from crying because it's over? Laugh because you're watching His Girl Friday! Listen to our final episode (or, you know, our whole series) on Spotify, Apple, or any other podcast platform. You can also browse our episode history on our Tumblr.
Though that was the biggest pop culture moment for me this winter, it wasn’t the only memorable one. Between discovering new holiday favorites to finally getting to watch some of the best films of 2024, there was so much to recommend I had to revisit the same format I used in 2020 and 2023: Crowd vs. Critic vs. Christmas! In addition to my top five Crowd-Pleasers and Critic Picks, I rounded up five Christmas Treats that may become annual traditions. But if holiday recommendations coming after Groundhog Day feels too weird for you, don’t miss my top film picks of 2024, many of which we’ll be discussing through the Oscars next month.
December + January Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Double Binge - Old People Solving Crimes: Only Murders in the Building Season 4 + A Man on the Inside (2024)
Only Murders in the Building isn’t slowing down on the jokes four seasons in, and that's helping green light projects like Ted Danson’s new Netflix sitcom. In a perfect world, his private detective activities in a nursing home would be 22-episode series order with holiday storylines, bottle episodes, and inconsequential subplots, but I’m grateful for any opportunities for legends like Danson and Mike Schur to make television.
Tumblr media
2. Moana 2 (2024)
While it’s not as polished as Moana, this sequel is a lot of fun. Watch my review for KMOV. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
3. Behind the Screens by Inaki Aliste Lizarralde with Neal E. Fischer (2023)
This illustrated coffee table book imagines detailed floor plans of your favorite TV sets, including Friends, Gilmore Girls, The Golden Girls, and Mary Tyler Moore. A perfect housewarming gift!
youtube
4. SNL Round Up
Before SNL 50, catch up on these sketches…
"Gladiator II: The Musical" (5008 with Paul Mescal) - This is a smidge saucier than I prefer, but the concept is perfection
"Mall Santas" (5009 with Chris Rock)
"Weekend Update: A Bald Man on a U.K. Court Harassment Ruling" (5009)
"Five-Timers Club Cold Open" (5010 with Martin Short)
"Stand-Up Monologue" (5011 with Dave Chappelle)
"Immigrant Dad Talk Show 2" (5011)
“Monologue” (5012 with Timothée Chalamet)
"Weekend Update: Andrew Dismukes and His Puppet Dad on Crazy Families” (5012)
Tumblr media
5. You’re Cordially Invited (2025)
Speaking of SNL, Will Ferrell is still one of the funniest people alive, and that’s still on display in this new family-focused rom-com on Prime with Reese Witherspoon. Catch my review on KMOV. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
December + January Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. Best of 2024
In 2024, the films that aligned with my taste tended to orbit the same questions. What does justice look like? How do we navigate generational conflict? And can institutions be saved in spite of their flawed systems? I’m drawn to stories with a clear point of view and characters who make strong choices, but I have little interest in preaching or provocation for its own merit. There were certainly more than 10 films that reflected those qualifications, so alongside each of my top 10 films, I’m recommending an honorable mention for a double feature. Read all of my picks for 2024 at ZekeFilm.
Tumblr media
2. An Experiment in Criticism by C.S. Lewis (1961)
Lewis’s book pulled together many of the ideas I had on my mind as I was writing my Best of 2024 piece. Though keeping up with his many dense literary references kept me on my toes, I’m grateful this 20th century thought leader took his time to walk us through how he assessed art.
Tumblr media
3. The Good Half (2024)
Stories about mopey writers + Nick Jonas = a very specific Venn diagram of my interests. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
4. Blitz (2024)
I’m surprised this Steve McQueen World War II bildungsroman didn’t make more of an Awards Season splash given its tight script and high production values. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
5. Double Feature - Written by Nora Ephron: Heartburn (1986) + My Blue Heaven (1990)
In 2025 I am working way through the films Nora Ephron wrote and/or directed I've missed, and this double feature was a great way to kick the project off. Heartburn (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10) recounts Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson’s marriage of cynical writers from pasta-seduction-meet-cute to fixer-upper-house-turned-possible-homewrecker. My Blue Heaven (8.5/10 // 7/10) forces a cartoonish mobster (Steve Martin) into witness protection, but it may be the mild-mannered agent (Rick Moranis) protecting him and small town he’s hiding in at greater risk because of his antics.
MORE WINTER CRITIC PICKS // To its credit, I was never once bored in Megalopolis (2024)! // Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (2024) is moving celebrity documentary even if you don’t have a deep connection with Reeve // I will never watch The Substance (2024) again because, frankly, I just can’t hack the needles and body horror, but its insight into how women’s bodies are discussed and viewed has stayed with me
Christmas Treats
Tumblr media
1. Ski Party (1965)
Is Frankie Avalon’s cross-dressing holiday the silliest of all the snowy films I watched this year? Definitely, but it’s hard to complain when James Brown makes a musical cameo. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 6/10
Tumblr media
2. By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953)
This early Doris Day role brings the Meet Me in St. Louis vibes. Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
3. Holiday Seasoning by Jimmy Fallon (2024)
The radio-safe hits are pretty standard, but I would take a whole album of comedy duets like “Hallmark Movie” (with Cara Delevigne), “One Glove” (with Will Ferrell), and “New Year’s Eve Polka” (with “Weird Al” Yankovic).
Tumblr media
4. Hot Frosty (2024)
This silly Netflix rom-com is a pretty perfect execution of a Hallmark movie for people who don’t like Hallmark movies. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 6/10
Tumblr media
5. Do You LIke Apples Christmas Movie Draft
I stopped by the Do You Like Apples podcast to discuss and draft our all-time favorite Christmas movies. While the voting for the best lineup has closed, I think we all know who won… Listen to the episode.
Also in December + January…
I took a deeper dive into a film I recommended in my November 2024 Round Up, Nickel Boys. Though the Academy has shown plenty of love toward films focusing on the mid-century struggle against Jim Crow (even awarding one Best Picture), Nickel Boys looks and feels nothing like them. Read my full review for ZekeFilm.
I'm updating my watchlist in real time on Letterboxd, where you can find a full lineup of everything I watched to celebrate the Christmas season from November to January.

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ review: Two weddings and a few laughs
Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon are ready to play, and “You’re Cordially Invited” has its moments, which is enough, probably, for home viewers in a five-or-six-laughs-will-do frame of mind. The comedy, written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, premieres Jan. 30 directly to Prime Video. This one’s all over the place tonally, on purpose: Ferrell wrestles a fake alligator over here, while over…

Movie Review: It's a wedding, and Reese, Celia, Meredith, Geraldine and Will say "You're Cordially Invited," Y'all
“Commitment” is a cornerstone of the marriage contract. And it’s damned important in a romantic comedy about marriages as well. Say this for the cast of writer-director Nicholas Stoller’s “You’re Cordially Invited.” These kids — and Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon, Celia Weston on down to Nick Jonas — commit the f out of this, to use a word that earned and earned and earned again this…

‘You’re Cordially Invited’ Review: Reese Witherspoon & Will Ferrell Don’t Reinvent Wedding Comedies But Still Find Laughs & Hearton January 31, 2025 at 3:50 am
There is really nothing that is not completely predictable about Amazon Prime Video’s latest big budget romantic comedy, but with Reese Witherspoon back in the genre, and Will Ferrell doing what he does best, the chemistry is there, and so are some laughs, including a real LOL moment involving Ferrell and an uncooperative alligator that […]There is really nothing that is not completely…
