round up // DECEMBER 24 + JANUARY 25: CROWD vs. CRITIC vs. CHRISTMAS!
Tumblr media
Well, that’s a wrap…on 2024, and on SO IT’S A SHOW!
After 8 years and 7 seasons filled with 200-ish pop culture references, Kyla and I celebrated our love for Gilmore Girls with one last pop culture reference and a lap down memory lane. Though it’s a bittersweet goodbye (unless, you know, Gilmore Girls returns with another revival season), I'm grateful for every minute we podcasted together. And the best way to keep from crying because it's over? Laugh because you're watching His Girl Friday! Listen to our final episode (or, you know, our whole series) on Spotify, Apple, or any other podcast platform. You can also browse our episode history on our Tumblr.
Though that was the biggest pop culture moment for me this winter, it wasn’t the only memorable one. Between discovering new holiday favorites to finally getting to watch some of the best films of 2024, there was so much to recommend I had to revisit the same format I used in 2020 and 2023: Crowd vs. Critic vs. Christmas! In addition to my top five Crowd-Pleasers and Critic Picks, I rounded up five Christmas Treats that may become annual traditions. But if holiday recommendations coming after Groundhog Day feels too weird for you, don’t miss my top film picks of 2024, many of which we’ll be discussing through the Oscars next month.
December + January Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Double Binge - Old People Solving Crimes: Only Murders in the Building Season 4 + A Man on the Inside (2024)
Only Murders in the Building isn’t slowing down on the jokes four seasons in, and that's helping green light projects like Ted Danson’s new Netflix sitcom. In a perfect world, his private detective activities in a nursing home would be 22-episode series order with holiday storylines, bottle episodes, and inconsequential subplots, but I’m grateful for any opportunities for legends like Danson and Mike Schur to make television.
Tumblr media
2. Moana 2 (2024)
While it’s not as polished as Moana, this sequel is a lot of fun. Watch my review for KMOV. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
3. Behind the Screens by Inaki Aliste Lizarralde with Neal E. Fischer (2023)
This illustrated coffee table book imagines detailed floor plans of your favorite TV sets, including Friends, Gilmore Girls, The Golden Girls, and Mary Tyler Moore. A perfect housewarming gift!
youtube
4. SNL Round Up
Before SNL 50, catch up on these sketches…
"Gladiator II: The Musical" (5008 with Paul Mescal) - This is a smidge saucier than I prefer, but the concept is perfection
"Mall Santas" (5009 with Chris Rock)
"Weekend Update: A Bald Man on a U.K. Court Harassment Ruling" (5009)
"Five-Timers Club Cold Open" (5010 with Martin Short)
"Stand-Up Monologue" (5011 with Dave Chappelle)
"Immigrant Dad Talk Show 2" (5011)
“Monologue” (5012 with Timothée Chalamet)
"Weekend Update: Andrew Dismukes and His Puppet Dad on Crazy Families” (5012)
Tumblr media
5. You’re Cordially Invited (2025)
Speaking of SNL, Will Ferrell is still one of the funniest people alive, and that’s still on display in this new family-focused rom-com on Prime with Reese Witherspoon. Catch my review on KMOV. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
December + January Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. Best of 2024
In 2024, the films that aligned with my taste tended to orbit the same questions. What does justice look like? How do we navigate generational conflict? And can institutions be saved in spite of their flawed systems? I’m drawn to stories with a clear point of view and characters who make strong choices, but I have little interest in preaching or provocation for its own merit. There were certainly more than 10 films that reflected those qualifications, so alongside each of my top 10 films, I’m recommending an honorable mention for a double feature. Read all of my picks for 2024 at ZekeFilm.
Tumblr media
2. An Experiment in Criticism by C.S. Lewis (1961)
Lewis’s book pulled together many of the ideas I had on my mind as I was writing my Best of 2024 piece. Though keeping up with his many dense literary references kept me on my toes, I’m grateful this 20th century thought leader took his time to walk us through how he assessed art.
Tumblr media
3. The Good Half (2024)
Stories about mopey writers + Nick Jonas = a very specific Venn diagram of my interests. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
4. Blitz (2024)
I’m surprised this Steve McQueen World War II bildungsroman didn’t make more of an Awards Season splash given its tight script and high production values. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
5. Double Feature - Written by Nora Ephron: Heartburn (1986) + My Blue Heaven (1990)
In 2025 I am working way through the films Nora Ephron wrote and/or directed I've missed, and this double feature was a great way to kick the project off. Heartburn (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10) recounts Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson’s marriage of cynical writers from pasta-seduction-meet-cute to fixer-upper-house-turned-possible-homewrecker. My Blue Heaven (8.5/10 // 7/10) forces a cartoonish mobster (Steve Martin) into witness protection, but it may be the mild-mannered agent (Rick Moranis) protecting him and small town he’s hiding in at greater risk because of his antics.
MORE WINTER CRITIC PICKS // To its credit, I was never once bored in Megalopolis (2024)! // Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (2024) is moving celebrity documentary even if you don’t have a deep connection with Reeve // I will never watch The Substance (2024) again because, frankly, I just can’t hack the needles and body horror, but its insight into how women’s bodies are discussed and viewed has stayed with me
Christmas Treats
Tumblr media
1. Ski Party (1965)
Is Frankie Avalon’s cross-dressing holiday the silliest of all the snowy films I watched this year? Definitely, but it’s hard to complain when James Brown makes a musical cameo. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 6/10
Tumblr media
2. By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953)
This early Doris Day role brings the Meet Me in St. Louis vibes. Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
3. Holiday Seasoning by Jimmy Fallon (2024)
The radio-safe hits are pretty standard, but I would take a whole album of comedy duets like “Hallmark Movie” (with Cara Delevigne), “One Glove” (with Will Ferrell), and “New Year’s Eve Polka” (with “Weird Al” Yankovic).
Tumblr media
4. Hot Frosty (2024)
This silly Netflix rom-com is a pretty perfect execution of a Hallmark movie for people who don’t like Hallmark movies. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 6/10
Tumblr media
5. Do You LIke Apples Christmas Movie Draft
I stopped by the Do You Like Apples podcast to discuss and draft our all-time favorite Christmas movies. While the voting for the best lineup has closed, I think we all know who won… Listen to the episode.
Also in December + January…
I took a deeper dive into a film I recommended in my November 2024 Round Up, Nickel Boys. Though the Academy has shown plenty of love toward films focusing on the mid-century struggle against Jim Crow (even awarding one Best Picture), Nickel Boys looks and feels nothing like them. Read my full review for ZekeFilm.
I'm updating my watchlist in real time on Letterboxd, where you can find a full lineup of everything I watched to celebrate the Christmas season from November to January.

Christmas Movie Ultimate Trivia Book by Neal E. Fischer
US pub date - 10/1/24
The title is weirdly clunky, but the book is set up wonderfully - full of vibrant colors and artwork, it really is an ultimate collection of Christmas movies as it’s full of holiday classics and favorite watches, along with many readers may decide to try watching  (though it was minus a really big one, imho - Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) - going by the logic that DIe Hard and Eyes Wide Shut are both Christmas movies - I mean, how can you forget Bridget Jones?).
This is bound to be an absolutely enjoyable family/friends activity and would make a fun Secret Santa gift.
Thank you to Epic Ink and NetGalley for the PDF

Happy Birfday Shep Gordon Born: October 18, 1945 in Jackson Heights, New York
Shep E. Gordon is an American talent manager, Hollywood film agent, and producer. Gordon is featured in a 2013 documentary, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, which was directed by Mike Myers.
After being introduced to the band Alice Cooper by drummer Neal Smith’s sister Cindy Smith, he and his partner Joe Greenberg began to manage the group in 1968. Gordon went on to represent Anne Murray, Blondie, Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, Ben Vereen, Burton Cummings, The Calloways, Difford and Tilbrook, Frankie Valli, Gary Wright, George Clinton, Gipsy Kings, Groucho Marx, Jean-Luc Ponty, Johnny Clegg, Kenny Loggins, King Sunny Ade, Lisa Fischer, Majek Fashek, Maurice White, Michelle Shocked, Mtume, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Pink Floyd, Pointer Sisters, Raquel Welch, Rick James, Sarah Miles, Stephanie Mills and Yvonne Elliman. He continues to manage Alice Cooper to this day without a contract.
Gordon was a partner with Sammy Hagar on Cabo Wabo Tequila. He also partnered with Willie Nelson to create Old Whiskey River Bourbon.
In 1993 Gordon created Alive Culinary Resources, the first talent agency to represent chefs. In the words of Emeril Lagasse, “He single-handedly created celebrity chefs." His client list has included Celestino Drago, Charlie Trotter, Daniel Boulud, Dean Fearing, Emeril Lagasse, Jimmy Schmidt, Jonathan Waxman, Larry Forgione, Lydia Shire, Mark Miller, Mark Tarbell, Nobu Matsuhisa, Peter Merriman, Piero Selvaggio, Pino Luongo, Rovert Del Grande, Roger Vergé, Roy Yamaguchi, Sam Choy, Wolfgang Puck, and Alan Wong.

Web Series Wednesday | #WhoKilledHeather
What? #WhoKilledHeather
Who? Co-created by Neal E. Fischer and Kevin Kirchman. Starring: David Raymond, Charlotte Mae Ellison, Christopher McClellan, Hannah Toriumi, Doug Walker, Casey Freund, Richard Strimer, Cassidy Stirtz, Cory Hardin and Jeremy Trager.
Why Should I Watch? A fresh newcomer to the web series world, #WhoKilledHeather is Fischer's debut series in conjunction with Radar Studios. The murder mystery series is a great addition to a community that more recently has been seeing more diversity in genres.
The series follows Andrew Olson (Raymond), a university student who after finding some old drone footage of a dead body, decides to open up the investigation of Heather (Toriumi), a fellow student's death, for a school project. Because nothing says exciting for a semester project like investigating someone's dead, especially considering the fact that someone's already been convicted for the crime.
This is where things get interesting, with the help of Max (McClellan) who we find out early on works for the local Waverly, Iowa Police Department, the dynamic duo start to find holes in the investigation. For one, it doesn't make sense that Heather's convicted killer, her boyfriend, would kill her in a field and dump her body in a burning dumpster. Secondly, Waverly was once known for its infamous Waverly Butcher whose MO was killing women and dressing them in similar looking pink dresses and leaving them in fields. What was Heather found wearing? Yep, a pink dress.
We won't go into spoilers too much since the series isn't even halfway through but we know fans of anything murder mystery and Twin Peak even, will love this series. I'd say this is a bit darker than a Laura Hollis investigation but it's definitely got its pop cultural references to give you just the right amount of humor needed for a serial killer feature.
Where Can I Watch? The 36-episode series is currently airing with 5 episodes thus far. You can catch new episodes every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 PM CST on the official YouTube channel. Take a look and let us know what you think!

Hi, these are some amazing floorplans of tv shows, would you be doing any more floor plans in the future, i am massively interested in shows like Arrested Development, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Married With Children? Kind Regards Jim
Hello, Jim.
I'm glad you like my drawings.
I keep making plans from TV series. I actually just uploaded one from "Fleabag".
I have spent the last year preparing a book about plans for TV series that will be published this coming October.
Included in that book are the floorplans for "Arrested Development", "Breaking Bad", "The Brady Bunch", "Ugly Betty", "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood", "3rd Rock from the Sun", "Killing Eve" and other series that I cannot show until it is published.
Maybe for that reason I'm more focused lately on movies than on TV series.
(BTW, it's already on pre-sale)
Best regards...
PS: Why does this reply to a private message appear in public? How can I hide it so that it is only visible to the person who asked the question?

The FCC is about to give massive internet service providers the power to divide the internet. It is at risk of becoming unrecognizable. A vital global utility that has been a boon to creative and economic freedom for people around the world may be turned into a twisted land of tolls and corporate control.
Those who control the network control the future
The stakes are high. The internet now touches every town, every city, and every single one of us — whether we use it or not. Those who control the network control the future.
The FCC is the current venue for this fight, but Congress will eventually intervene. As telecom expert Susan Crawford argues, the FCC is “being outrageous” to force Congress’ involvement. And both net-neutrality advocates and the telecom industry have asked for lawmakers to act. Advocates believe a law will make net neutrality more durable. But ISPs are betting they’ll be able to write the bill — because they’ve paid for the opportunity.
In March, we published a story that showed contributions from the ISP industry to members of Congress who voted to repeal a landmark FCC privacy rule, opening the door to the sale of customer data. It was one of our most popular stories of the year, and many of you asked why we only published contributions to some members of Congress. Incidentally, every one of the 265 members who voted for the measure in March were Republicans. And many of those same members endorse the effort to end net neutrality.
But it’s fair to want to see monetary influence across all of Congress. While it is clear that alignment with the ISPs is currently drawn along party lines, the industry’s attempt to gain favor with lawmakers is not partisan. Entrenched telecommunications companies liberally spread money and attention to everyone who holds office. Sometimes that influence comes in the form of lavish parties with Olympic athletes and lobbyists, but consistently it comes in the form of contributions to campaigns.
It’s impossible to quantify the overall influence of this powerful industry, but we can chart some of it. Below you will find contributions to individual members of Congress and those members’ leadership PACs, from 1989 to the present day. This money came from the telecommunication industry’s own PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families. This data was prepared for The Verge by The Center for Responsive Politics: an independent, non-partisan nonprofit research group that tracks money in US politics and its effect on elections and public policy.

Objective: To conduct a Mendelian randomization study, using germline genetic variants as instrumental variables, to appraise the causal relevance of telomere length for risk of cancer and non-neoplastic diseases. Data Sources: Genomewide association studies (GWAS) published up to January 15, 2015. Study Selection: GWAS of noncommunicable diseases that assayed germline genetic variation and did not select cohort or control participants on the basis of preexisting diseases. Of 163 GWAS of noncommunicable diseases identified, summary data from 103 were available. Data Extraction and Synthesis: Summary association statistics for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are strongly associated with telomere length in the general population. Main Outcomes and Measures: Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for disease per standard deviation (SD) higher telomere length due to germline genetic variation. Results: Summary data were available for 35 cancers and 48 non-neoplastic diseases, corresponding to 420 081 cases (median cases, 2526 per disease) and 1 093 105 controls (median, 6789 per disease). Increased telomere length due to germline genetic variation was generally associated with increased risk for site-specific cancers. The strongest associations (ORs [95% CIs] per 1-SD change in genetically increased telomere length) were observed for glioma, 5.27 (3.15-8.81); serous low-malignant-potential ovarian cancer, 4.35 (2.39-7.94); lung adenocarcinoma, 3.19 (2.40-4.22); neuroblastoma, 2.98 (1.92-4.62); bladder cancer, 2.19 (1.32-3.66); melanoma, 1.87 (1.55-2.26); testicular cancer, 1.76 (1.02-3.04); kidney cancer, 1.55 (1.08-2.23); and endometrial cancer, 1.31 (1.07-1.61). Associations were stronger for rarer cancers and at tissue sites with lower rates of stem cell division. There was generally little evidence of association between genetically increased telomere length and risk of psychiatric, autoimmune, inflammatory, diabetic, and other non-neoplastic diseases, except for coronary heart disease (OR, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.67-0.90]), abdominal aortic aneurysm (OR, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.49-0.81]), celiac disease (OR, 0.42 [95% CI, 0.28-0.61]) and interstitial lung disease (OR, 0.09 [95% CI, 0.05-0.15]). Conclusions and Relevance: It is likely that longer telomeres increase risk for several cancers but reduce risk for some non-neoplastic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases.
