I saw back to the sewers added in the masterlist and I just HAD TO make a request!
Can I request Leo having a rough yet emotion filled night with his S/O once he returns from the future? Maybe he even talks about the family had made there
Back From The Future (Angst/Fluff)
BTTS!Leonardo x reader
A/N: I thought this idea was cute, and I hope that this is somewhat what you were looking for💙
Warnings: Emotions, øh?
The moment you learned that your boyfriend had returned, after having disappeared a year ago, you sprinted to the lair. You hadn’t even tied your shoes, your coat just hanging on by your shoulders as you ran down the street and through the cold night, running straight for Central Park, heading directly for the lair, tears pushing at the back of your eyes.
The moment you saw Leo in the lair, you pushed past whoever stood in your way and threw yourself at him, wrapping your arms tightly around him as you pulled him in for a hug. Leo’s arms found you immediately, holding you as close as possible. So close, as if his life depended on it, burying his face against your neck. Oh, how he had missed you. A whole year. And every single day, he had been thinking about you. Missing you. Hoping to see you one day again.
At this point you could not hold back your tears any longer. Your shoulders shaking as you sobbed, burying your face against his plastron. Leo could not hold his emotions back either, taking in shaky breaths as he tried to calm himself down, but to no avail. He finally had you in his arms again, a feeling so great that he could not hold back the tears, crying against your shoulder as he held you close, neither of you ever wanting to let go again.
That night you stayed in the lair, just like you used to do, before Leo and his family disappeared. It was now that Leo had the time to explain to you what had happened. Between softs hugs and kisses, along with sudden tearful outburst of emotions, Leo told you where he had been for the past year. Or when, to be exact. When he first told you that he had traveled in time, you did not believe him. You almost questioned him, wanting to know why he wouldn’t tell you the truth, but then you realized, Leo had never lied to you. Leo would never lie to you. And by the way he was holding you, and the way he was looking at you, you knew he was telling the truth. Your boyfriend and his family had been around a 100 years into the future, unable to get back, spending a year in the far future. And boy, did Leo had much to tell you about.
That evening, Donnie worked tirelessly with the help of April and Sterling, in order to get a lab up and working as fast as possible, while Mikey, Raph and Casey stood around, watching them work. While that was going on, you and Leo were tangled up in his room, staying in his bed for hours, just talking, enjoying each other’s company, and expressing strong motions.
For the first few moments, neither you or Leo spoke. Instead he laid with his face buried against the crock of your neck, his arms tightly around, as in fear that you would disappear if he let go. At times both you and him would suddenly begin sobbing, followed by the words of how much you had missed each other. Once your tears had stopped falling, you would engage in small tender kisses, followed by more silent hugging, feeling the warmth and comfort of each other’s presence.
As time went on, you and Leo would slowly loosen up. Your arms weren’t as tightly wrapped around each other as before, instead just loosely draped over each other, letting you create some space, so that you could look at each other.
With your head resting on Leo’s strong arm, you listened as he talked about the things he had experienced in the future, all while his other hand smoothed over your arm, his fingers tracing small shapes as he spoke. At one point you grabbed a soft hold of his hand, entwining your fingers, your thumb stroking the side of his knuckle. How you had missed the feeling of his hand in yours.
“Are you going to miss him?”, you asked after Leo had spoken about Cody.
“Of course I’ll miss him”, Leo said, looking down at your entwined fingers with a soft smile. “He’s a sweet kid. He learned quickly and has a very bright mind. It will be strange not being able to talk to him anymore”. Leo let go of your hand, in order to wrap his arm around you once more, pulling you close so that your face was mere inches from his. “But as much as I’m going to miss him, I’m just glad to be home”. Leo pressed a kiss to your forehead before pulling you in for another tight hug, resting head against your shoulder. “I’ve missed you so much, (Y/N). You have no idea how often I thought about you. There were times I couldn’t sleep, just thinking about you”.
“I know, Leo”, you whispered, your voice shaking as you felt your throat closing in once more as you spoke, your arms wrapping under his, holding on to his shoulder. “I’ve missed you too. Every single day, I’ve been thinking about you. But now I’m just glad that you’re back”.
And so, the rest of the night, you and Leo stayed wrapped up in each other’s arms, trying to catch up on the time spent apart. Talking about what else he and his family had been up to in the far future, along how you had managed to spend your time. But none of it could compare to the feeling of finally having your boyfriend back in your arms. After a whole year, you were finally able to be together again.

Since you are into TMNT I am curious what’s your opinion on each of the turtles in general since you seem to be into all iterations of them /gen question
ooh fascinating question. unsure if you mean each individual turtle from each gen or just each gen itself but i'll go into both!
so i actually have a tmnt powerpoint i'm working on right now, so i'll lift some stuff but obviously i won't lift it all, ill go in franchise order. shows and comics in order (show specific comics will go in the show sections) and then movies. spoilers for pretty much every single thing i talk about. if you haven't finished a specific iteration just skip the paragraph about it
Mirage
I havent read too much of mirage, though i'm sure its good i find it a bit visually noisy and actually struggle to read it- my vision is fine as far as i know and i don't usually have trouble with other black and white comics but man mirage is hard to read, whenever eastman would draw for idw annuals or issues i'd have a hard time getting through them because even though the style is cool i just can't see anything, so yeah, that for the time being kind of sums up my thoughts on mirage, i think the shredder worm shark is funny as hell though. i suppose the only thing of note i have an opinion on is the april race debate - wherein by one of them she was thought of as white and the other thought of her as non-white (i can't remember which ethnicity), so based on that i've seen people say that means she's white or the other ethnicity but since they're co authors i've just gone with the idea that mirage april is biracial. that's about the only mirage thing i can actually give my two cents on, moving on!
1987
I really like 1987, i haven't watched it all but trust me i'm slogging through it o7. i adore the animation mistakes, the way they give one turtle another turtles lines, and i think the characterisation is pretty solid. sometimes the show can feel tedious to watch personally, which is why i love saturday morning adventures, it's a much more concise, thought out version of the show itself and is a beautiful love letter to the show (they also finally sent usagi home :'D). obviously it went on for way longer than it realistically needed to, a majority of episodes basically mean nothing unless they introduce new characters, its the one piece of the franchise, lots of filler, i still think it's great though. i also love shredders revenge, it was the first tmnt game i've played since joining the fandom and similar to SMA it is a genuinely beautiful love letter to the community and franchise, i'm an avid cross stitcher as well so pixel games make me happy because i can stitch straight from the game sprites, which i've been doing :3. I love how the turtles are characterised, Cam clarke is iconic and i love shredder and krangs dynamic, irma has become the love of my life and much to my dismay i love the neutrinos which sucks because they're only present elsewhere in idw, i'm doubtful but begging Tottmnt to bring them back.
2003
2003 is by far my favourite of the shows, i actually enjoyed fast forward unlike much of the tmnt fandom, i thought it was fun, though sterling was meh to me, i just didn't like him - even though i liked fast forward i can personally admit the show dealt with similar issues to 1987 of just. extending itself. when they were able to focus on plots and do arc episodes was great, but the seasons could have definitely been cut down sometimes because the formula of an episode was beholden to ads, which meant every 5 minutes someone had to say something shocking or nearly die only for it to be dissuaded or continued after the ad break, watching it digitally now with no ad breaks was kind of funny though because i would be up late sometimes and delirious and the 03 singers yelling 'teenage mutant ninja turtles' at me while mikey or other did a cool move entertained me much more than it should have. I really love that the opening scene is recreation of the first scene in the mirage comics, even if i have trouble reading it i think thats cool and fun, i love all the turtles voices and characterisation, i never have any complaints about voice in any iteration but especially not here, they all feel perfect. the fandom is a big part of the joy of 03 for me, but i do still love watching my favourite episodes back from time to time, and like any good 03 fan i can scream about good genes and same as it never was like a banshee, though i do also have a lot of thoughts on other arcs dw. usually i find it easier to pick a favourite turtle iteration to iteration but man is it hard here, they all have their moments, i think the humour and the darkness are played really well (cough except for when leo got stabbed in the shoulder and i had no idea where he got stabbed until he got a scar next episode because there was no blood). I was drawn into the fandom by rise and it will always hold a special place in my heart but 2003 is far and away my favourite iteration. forever sad about the dreamwave comics being cut short and no one picking them up. we deserve more official 03 comics.
IDW
I'm also still reading idw - don't kill me its long and also theres just a lot of turtles stuff to get through, okay? I really have enjoyed it thus far, i jumped for joy when the neutrinos were revealed, i hated chet with a passion and they somehow wormed me back in with the fugitoid reveal, i will say similar to watching 03 digitally and just getting hit with the before ad and after ads cutaways back to back, there's a bit of an annoyance in trying to find and read everything in exact order, because missing a micro/macro or short side story like the secret history of the foot can kind of screw you over, so when someone says they're reading idw its not actually the 150 issues, its well over 200, though i haven't counted specifically. if you read the powerpoint pictures you'll see the artist death match, basically i was just going to pit them against each other by choosing the best design of reoccurring characters and the artist would get the point, there are some great artist who had a hand in this series, i can't deny all of them are talented, but man some of them are just not for me, getting through an arc with a style i don't like is a breath of fresh air, right now my main example of a style i like is Mateus Santolouco - not all the character designs are my favourite but the secret history of the foot clan was gorgeous, especially karai, she's always been one of my favourite characters. i enjoy idw, i think the worst thing i can say about it really is sometimes theres styles i don't like and akin to other comic series it can be stupidly difficult to figure out the exact reading order when you're not there from the beginning.
2012
possibly controversial (definitely, i'm lying to myself), 2012 is probably my least favourite of the franchises shows (no, its not below next mutation, just talking animated main shows). just to explain myself, I do LIKE the show, but of the shows i find its the least in line with my humour, the gross out humour is a little more uncomfortable for me given the 3d style, i can't deny the story is probably the most well done of any of the shows thus far, i do enjoy the story and i think even non relevant episodes to the main storyline do a good job of serving some kind of purpose to character development or giving the viewer a look into the world, it is by no means a bad show, i would never say it is, i do like it, but for myself personally i struggle to sit down and rewatch because of some of the things i pointed out and some other things like the way apritello is written, leorai (shudders), idk why but 2012 splinter just annoys me, i will say the turtles and april are really enjoyable characters, i find most of the characters (karai, casey, some of the minor villains even) pretty engaging, everyone feels really fleshed out and similar to 03 the voice acting is on point, though this iteration isn't my favourite in terms of rewatchability, i audibly cheered when i realised shelldon was greg cipes, when he said booyakasha i was on the floor weeping. 2012 is a show that i would watch on occassion when it was on, its the one i technically grew up with, though i wasn't really into tmnt as a kid, but greg cipes was pretty much my childhood as a big teen titans kid, as well as mae whitman, i was a big tinkerbell kid, so those 2 are a huge highlight of the show for me. my feelings on 2012 are pretty confusing, but i still do like the show, its just if anyone (like you) asked, i would have to say its technically my least favourite, but again, by no means means that its bad, because it isn't, it's just not really as for me as the other shows. the '12 comics i enjoy, i haven't read too many but the batman crossover was sick as hell, style wise the 2012 comics are solid, while i don't think 2012 looks bad as a 3d show i would personally be more drawn to it if it was 2d like the comics, i just prefer 2d.
Rise (2018)
As previously mentioned, like many others rise was my formal introduction as a teen/now adult into the tmnt fandom, for a while it kind of stood out as my favourite before 03 topped it, but still i love it with all my heart and i rewatch episodes frequently. i think the voice casting was on point, i had recently finished ducktales so ben schwartz and josh brener were welcome surprises, kat graham was in perth for a con recently and i was so sad she wasn't scheduled for the melbourne run of that con and was heavily tempted to go just to see her, rise april is definitely my favourite of all aprils, while i think its a fun dynamic when April is an adult and sort of an aunt figure to the turtles, rise april really killed the older sister thing, every episode she's in is a treat, omar miller and brandon smith (am i meant to put middle/second names i have no idea) were stunning choices for raph and mikey, rise raph is so brotherly and silly, he just brings so much heart to raph, Mikey is so much fun in rise, i can get caught up in inflection and the way a line is said and there's a lot of variety with Mikey's lines, its funny and i couldn't ask for better delivery, i think they're all good at it but brandon knocks it out of the park with mikey. So, partially the blame goes to 03 but rise was also what got me into usagi yojimbo, it's kinda funny how the only show without a canon usagi is the one that kinda goes the hardest in adding him into stuff. the format of the show not getting to focus a lot on plot and mostly just being one off episodes obviously isn't ideal, but for what story we got i really enjoyed, i also just liked the one off segments, the majority of them i really liked and found funny, for me this is probably the show that makes me laugh the most out of any of them - while i tend to participate nowadays more with the 03 section of the fandom, i still love rise to my core and still interact with it here and there.
Ronin
As i said before, theres a lot of tmnt to go through, but uh. everyone talks about the last ronin, so i detoured my regular watching and reading to dive into it. I liked it, there are things i would love answers to but i might just need to reread to know because middle of reading my cat threw up and i had to pause to clean it up, so yeah- there are things i'm worried to have possibly misunderstood, like the dissolution of their treaty of sorts, misremembering or misunderstood that part of the story is a possibility but if its not that i'm still desperate to know who actually betrayed who first, what actually did the turtles/foot truce in? i haven't gone into re-evolution or lost years yet, i've been meaning to but occasionally i'll get a new shiny hyperfixation and when i return to turtles i tend to dive right into the shows or long running comics first compared to stuff like ronin. i am very excited for the game and the film, little nervous at the idea the film will be live action but i'm mostly just going to wait and see, no sense hating it before i even know what it looks like.
Mutant mayhem/tales/2023
i know i said movies last but its kind of different since the movie was before the show- so deal with it ig. mutant mayhem is a great movie, emotional, funny, i really like it, and the style translates beautifully into 2d animation for the show, i don't have much to say on the movie itself, i really liked it, i watched it with my mum who really liked it and she can be pretty hot and cold when it comes to movies. Tales is a fun show, i similarly don't have too much to say, i struggle to rewatch things i've watched semi recently because i get burnt out on it quicker, but i'm super excited to watch this iteration continue, i'll miss rise like hell but i think tales shows great promise and i'm looking forward to more of it!
Bayverse
if you're wondering why i skipped the 2007 movie its because i haven't watched it, semi similar to mirage the style is a lot, but not similar in the way that i can actually tell whats going on in 07, i just. don't like the style. bayverse is pretty controversial but i like it enough, i don't really rewatch it because the 3d models freak me out, but i love the fanart people make, i do think the character designs themselves are very good, peoples fanart definitely helps you look at them more clearly as well. I still don't visually get leo's bone necklace placemat thing. splinter in the first movie is too furless and he needs to be shot. the movies themselves i don't find too special but i don't dislike them, i remember watching the second movie because some cousins and i went out with our nan and my younger cousin wanted to watch it so we did. i had very little turtle exposure as a child but out of the shadows was part of it.
Original trilogy
I quite like the original trilogy, it's very campy but i think its a fun watch, similar to mutant mayhem i watched these with my mum, we really only watch the movies together and we had a good time, we both struggle to really take them seriously. we had to pause the first movie for a WHILE to laugh at the bathtub scene, i still laugh about it frequently and remind her of it just as often, 'i'm coming....... tO A DECISION' also was funny, the third movie is there also.
Batman vs tmnt
Holy crossover, batman. i really like this movie, as a tmnt fan and a batman enjoyer this movie is just so good, many have said it before and i will continue to say it. the movie is so full of easter eggs, i'm still trying to figure out if that portrait in the turtle van is of mikey or jennika - everyone is characterised so well, the dynamics between the batfam and the turtles is done amazingly, alfred and mikey as a duo is delightful and as always the voice acting is so good, i would sell my soul to hear kyle mooney and baron vaughn as mikey and donnie again. eric bauza is always fun to see given his history with tmnt, so seeing him actually be a turtle for once was great, i really enjoyed his performance as leo, i still can't believe darren criss is raph. i'm a gleek and a huge starkid fan and i can't hear it but i know its true. its fucking insane. the movies story and pacing is just really good, and is one of the few animated tmnt iterations to actually let people get hurt, have visible injuries and get fully murdered on screen, when i saw that foot ninja DIE die i was fucking pumped, a lot of the other video iterations lack actual tension because yeah shredder wants to murder a guy but this is family programming, so he wont and can't. but you watch people die and suddenly that hologram the foot tried to kill doesn't just feel like a 1987 thing where the one time the villains are able to do real damage its a decoy, it feels like a truly necessary precaution, had batman not done that, someone would have died, no doubt. i've spent an extended period of time analysing the easter eggs in this movie, especially when it comes to the turtle van itself, i LOVE the van design, the fact its an old rv, the call back to 87, the spare tire being an anti-foot symbol, the grafitti saying 'Foot Stinks', the April calendar with a picture of a turtle on it, its all a genuine treat. I love this movie, i think it's the best tmnt film ever, i love rise's film but to me nothing holds a candle to this. rarely do i only ever have one criticism for a movie but the only issue i have with the movie is the fact they clearly imply mr freeze DIED and that mutated batman killed him but they NEVER TOUCH ON IT AGAIN. i need directors commentary, i need a script, i need SOMETHING to tell me what happened. anyways. the fighting is so much fun, i love it, it's delightful to watch a tmnt fight and to be fully dialed in because it feels like a real fight, 03 had some pretty good fight scenes but in essence they were very cartoony in the way they won a lot of the time, i just think the batman vs fights are golden, especially the penguin fight, but again, all of them are really good.
so yeah. i have a lot of tmnt opinions, there's more i could say about each iteration individually, especially the shows, but i'll leave it with a list of my favourite characters and their iterations.
IDW Karai, 2012 and 2003 karai, they mean the world to me, i'm a big karai fan and i think they're great. of course the neutrinos, as little as they appear they mean the world to me. 2003 casey is definitely my favourite casey, second is probably idw casey. Batman Donnie is so much fun, his lack of social awareness is really played up but it feels natural and very donnie and i love the think he does where he moves his head like he's going to hide it in his shell but doesn't so he's just poking out. Rise april has my entire heart, she's the best and i'd die for her. 03 and 24/MM Leo, they're both great. really the entire rise cast has my heart. also the 03 cast but special shout out to 03 splinter he's just very sweet. i have to stop now because i could yell about even more characters forever, so last one i would say Alopex, i think she's a great addition to the franchise and i hope more people adapt her.
in case you weren't wondering because i'll tell you anyways, i do have oc's, i just don't really draw that much or particularly well so i don't post about them, i do write about them but i don't publish it bc i don't think anyone would care much, i don't really dip into oc fic either so.
so yeah. general thoughts on most of the franchise! if you want me to expand on any of the thoughts i shared here i'd be happy to but for now my fingers ache from typing so bye :3

◘Eyecon '08 Jared's Entrance by jibbles21◘
(0:00 J) -introduction
Kenny Smith: Oh my god! It’s- (turns) it’s- it’s- Oh, me. Thank you. (gestures to audience member) So, sweet. Really.
(to audience) Okay, you guys. You know the drill. We got the man. I need all of you- I swear, he could just start a cult right now, because (audience laughs) he could just make all of you do horrible, horrible things. (audience laughs) It’s okay.
You know the drill ladies. You got people behind you. They need to be able to see. Take your picture, move along. Let’s create a system. You guys are already pros at this (audience giggles) and we love you for it.
Are you ready, ladies? (audience screams and claps.) I can’t hear you. (audience screams harder and claps)
(shakes head) He (?serves us?). (holds up clip board and leans over) Stop it. (audience laughs) What the hell am I thinking?!
◘Jared 1 - Florida Supernatural EyeCon 2008 by rsrvedMom◘
Audience member: We love you Kenny!
Smith: He stars as Sam Winchester! (audience screams and claps) He’s Supernatural! And he really is a hellva nice guy. (audience laughs) ..Please give it up.. for none other, Jared Padalecki, the man! (audience screams, claps, and cheers)
One of the double doors opens and Jared walks into the convention ballroom, clapping and waving to the crowd. Jared walks on stage and is greeted with Smith kneeling to him with the mic held out towards him. Jared awkwardly kneels to accept the mic. Then they both stand straight up.
Jared: (off mic) I’ve never been- (on mic) I’ve never been knighted before like that. (Smith throws his hands up)
Smith: (to audience) (off mic) It’s what I do. (turns and leaves the stage)
Jared: (waves to the audience) Hi, guys. (audience screams and claps) (smiles and sits down) Thanks for coming out. Sorry.. that things got crazy. But, thanks for waking up early.

Jared: First off, that’s my favorite shirt. (audience cackles) (snorts)
My favorite episode I’ve filmed.. would be, uhm… (inhale) That’s a very good question. I’ve never really thought about that. I’ve thought about sort of stuff I’m either proud of or sad with.
But you know what? I- I always go back to the episode “Skin” where Sam and Dean fought. And it was a lot of fun. It was sort of.. the first time in the shooting of “Supernatural” that.. we.. did something so drastically different.
I mean, it was the seventh episode of the series so, um.. So, we were sort of doing the same thing. Huntin’- Hunting a monster and killing it, and then going home. Hunting a monster, killing it, going home. It was like, “You’re gonna fight your brother.” It was like, “Ooo.” I kind of like the, uh- I like the idea of it.
And, um.. I didn’t like that he won, (audience laughs) but I like that he then killed him.. after he won. Which, was kind of bizarre. But, it was a lot of fun to shoot (nods) that sequence.
So, (nods) I- I say “Skin”

Jared: (claps knee) No way. (nods) (off mic) Thank you. (nods) Thank you.
Fan: How much fun was that?
Jared: That was a lot of fun. I would actually say that, that.. ranks up there with “Skin.” Because, I got to be bad. And I like that. (nods) Yeah, that was a lot of fun, because Sam got to be tough. And I know he had a demon.. in him.. to make him tough, but (audience giggles) (smiles and shrugs) tough is still tough, right?
I was tired of kind of being like, (bobs back and forth with a thick accent) “Dean, come save me.” (audience laughs) So, um- And it was a lot of fun tah- You know what’s funny? Is that one of the things I liked about “Born Under a Bad Sign” is it pitted the brothers against each other again.

And, not like I’m.. It’s not some repressed thing, (shakes head) “I want to fight Jensen” or anything. (audience laughs) But, it’s just, I think it’s such an interesting story to tell. What would turn two brothers against each other? And of course, both times it’s been either a shapeshifter or a demon. And the brothers actually love each other. They just.. are fighting the demon version of the other.
But, um- eh, I think it’s such an interesting story to tell. And we get along so much, that it’s fun to fight, you know? (audience giggles) (nods and shrugs)

..Okay, it was something like.. the- the line where I say- (gestures) Or we say, “And every morning when he wakes up he- (waves hand up) Okay enough!” He would.. do it too early. But, he’d- he’d like skip a line. But, we had done it, um- We ride together to work, um, every day. We get picked up and go to work. So, we knew that day was going to be big. Because they wanted it to be.. (snaps fingers on a beat) you know, very crisp. And so, we just read the- I had him read it a bunch of times, because the idea is that Sam is mimicking.. Dean. And so, I wanted to know.. what he- how he would say it as Dean.
So, I just had him read it.. again, again, again, again. And I started.. kind of doing it silently as he was doing it. And I was like, (shrugs) “Alright, let’s try it.” And so we gave it a shot. But also right before that scene, uh, we sat in his trailer.. and just were going (rhythmic hand chop gesture) “Dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah.”
And then we sort of put our heads down and went straight to set. And we’re like, (swipes hand and gets up) “Don’t talk to us.” (hand chop gesture) We’re like going, “We’re in the zone.” (audience laughs) And so, um- And then we got to set and he ruined it all anyways. Fan: Hi. (Jared: Hey.) My name’s Kevin from the UK. (Jared: Nice.) Uh, we’re way, way behind in the, uh, airings. I think we had the Christmas episode about two or three weeks ago.
Jared: Okay.
Fan: That was quite lighthearted in terms of, well, the mutilations and evil Santas. But, (audience and Jared chuckles) lately there’s quite a dark undertone. Do you enjoy doin’ the light hearted stuff more, like when you had the luck char- when you had the unlucky charm where you lost your shoe down the drain? (audience chuckles) That sort of stuff. (Jared: [off mic] Yeah.) Do you enjoy that mainly? Is that break up the whole dark tone of the whole series a little bit?
Jared: You know what? I enjoy it. I’ve never- And I’m (shakes head and hand swipes) totally not fishing here. (hand swipes) I’ve never thought I was funny. I’ve never been like, (mimics confidence) “Yeah.. I can.. get up there and act funny,” you know? I’ve always really liked drama. Um.. and so, it’s been a fun opportunity- That’s why they don’t give me a lot of funny stuff. They’re like, “He’s not funny. (laughs) Don’t give him funny stuff.”
But, anyways, I also- Sam’s such a serious character or has been and it’s such a dark show that it’s hard to really work in comedy, uh, seamlessly. Uh, and we’ve had a few funny episodes. Like we had, uh, one, uh, (points) that- that is a funny one where.. the bad, uh, rabbits foot, and, you know, the “Hell Hounds” episode and the “Tall Tales” episode.
But, um, I have a lot of fun doing it. And I think it’s pleasant to break up the, uh.. to break up the dark. (shrugs) I mean, someone.. someone famous.. said, um, “If you make ‘em laugh, then you can make ‘em cry.” You know? And it’s just the idea that you need the yin and the yang. It can’t just be, you know, “Here we are.. only gonna be dark and scared. And I’m going to be only scared for an hour.”
Like, I think, the writers want to laugh and be scared and cry. The audience wants tah laugh and be scared and, (shrugs) you know, scream and throw things at the- (shakes head) you know. ◘Jared Padalecki at Eyecon Q&A 4 by akmcreation◘
Um.. I always like the reoccurring.. (squints eyes) demons.. for some reason, because I feel like.. you know, usually if you’re writing demons that have to be killed off. But even from (counts on fingers) the demon that was Nicki Aycox in season one (audience claps and woo’s) (nods and gestures to the audience) that ended up becoming Sam. And season two for a little bit. (nods)
Yeah, because I think it started to give us an insight into what it is we’re going against. You know, we know ghosts are bad and wendigos are bad. And bugs are bad. (audience laughs) And so, you know- you know, kill those things.
But, um- But it’s really interesting trying to figure out- ‘cause I still like to watch it as an audience member whenever I can and trying to figure out what the writers are thinking. Like, I’m in the same boat as y’all guys. I’m going, “What are the writers doing? What are trying tah.. hint at in this episode that we’re going to see in three episodes and go ‘Ew, yeah. remember when this happened, blah, blah, blah?’?”
So, I like the reoccurring demons. (nods) ..And I guess (gestures to audience) Ruby’s been a really cool character because she’s- she’s revealed so much about.. Sam. Jared: (off mic) This is really awesome guys. (briefly studies the art) (on mic) That’ll go with me to Vancouver. Thank you. (fans nod) I don’t have- especially I don’t have Harley. (fans return to their seats) So, it’s good to have my dogs with me. (audience yeahs and claps) Thanks guys. (returns on stage)
No one ever drew my dogs for me when I was on “Gilmore Girls”. (smiles) (audience laughs)
That’s what I’m saying, that the people in this show where.. (round gesture) we’ve become.. a brotherhood.. (round gesture) and sisterhood. (audience giggles) …I guess mostly a sisterhood. (audience laughs) Ladies. (sits back down)
Audience member: We inducted you.
Audience member: You’ve been inducted.
Jared: That’s cool. ..I’ve been inducted into the sisterhood? (audience laughs)
Audience member: Yes!
Audience member: Yeah!
Jared: Don’t tell my fiancé. (audience laughs)
Audience member: (?Pretty sure she knows?).
Jared: I know. (to fan) Thank you very much, by the way.

•(3:33 A, 0:06 T)- EyeA08JP;Q23- What if; choice classic film remake role and costars; Lawrence of Arabia, Johnny Depp
Fan: Um, but I have a question.
Jared: Sure.
Fan: Which is, um, if you could been in a remake of any classic film, which one would you be in and who would you like to have as your costars?
Jared: Oo. (audience oo’s)
Fan: Yeah.
Jared: (exhales) …Wow that’s a great, um, great, great, great question. I think.. mmost recently, um.. the classic film that I- I sort of watched, partially because I hadn’t seen it in a while and partially because.. I was working with him, was “Lawrence of Arabia” with Peter O’Toole.
And that- I watched it and it’s.. (shakes head) I mean, it’s a- a meal of a movie. It’s three- It’s two discs and three something hours, or four hours. And it’s never (hand swipe) boring and it’s (hand swipe) never slow. And I think his character.. L. Lawrence, you know, and- is- is.. so powerful and such a leader.
◘Jared at EyeCon 4 by Rachel◘
And it’s (sits up) exactly how Peter O’Toole is, by the way. He just walks in. He doesn’t.. (hand swipes) disrespect anybody, but he commands respect just the way he holds himself. And I think that’d be a lot of fun to shoot.
And then, my guest star would be, um, Jessica Biel. (audience chuckles) (shakes head) I’m just kidding. (waves hand) Totally kidding.
Umm. I have a lot of actors that I’d love to work with. Um, like, the Johnny Depps, obviously, and, um- (audience woos) Yeah. (nods) So, (flips hand up) I think if I could choose a guest star I’d- Johnny Depp. (audience woo) (nods) Mhm. Ow! (smiles) (audience claps and cheers)
•(5:01 A, 1:33 T, 0:38 R)- EyeA08JP;Q24a- Easiest nuance of Sam’s personality
Fan: Hey, Jared.
Jared: Hi.
Fan: Um, can you tell us a little bit about what the easiest aspect of Sam’s personality to tap into besides-
Jared: The looks. (Blue Steel impression) (fan and audience laugh) (giggles)
Fan: I was gonna say besides being a smarty pants? (audience laughs. Jared looks down and claps his mic) But. (smacks lips and chuckles)
Jared: Probably the smart in past tense.
Fan: And what is the hardest to, um, tap into because it’s so unlike you?
Jared: (off mic) (nods) Okay, um.. (on mic) the easiest is theee… Huh. (audience chuckles) (pumps eyebrows) That’s a great question.
◘Jared Padalecki at EyeCon 6 by sarahmonious◘
I think the easiest is probably (squints) he’s analytical mind? Uhm, like I’m definitely a… I don’t want to say I’m a thinker, because that makes me sound like, “I’m intelligent.” (audience chuckles) But, I mean, I- I like to think things out. (weighing gesture) I like to try and see it from different aspects and it was easy for me to, uhm- to, uhh.. (gestures) kind of get into that aspect of Sam’s character.
You know, seeing it from this angle instead of that angle. Instead of just the first angle, trying to play.. devil’s advocate. Like, I’ll find myself arguing with Sandy sometimes and saying something that (squints and shrugs) I don’t even think is true, (shrugs) but I’m just saying it to see where it goes, you know? (audience giggles)
And so, I think Sam has a little bit of that. Sam’s like, (holds hand out) “Wait, Dean. Like, what about this?” You know? “What if the demon’s good?” Even if Sam thinks the demon is bad, or knows that the demon is bad, he’s saying let’s think it out first.
•(6:18 A, 1:55 R, 0:50 S)- EyeA08JP;Q24b- Acting Challenges; Hardest nuance of Sam’s personality; 3x14
And the hardest part.. has been, um… The hardest part has beenn.. his willingness to.. sacrifice himself.. (audience chuckles) for, uh- for, uh, tah hunt ghosts. I mean, it’s-it’s hard tah.. It’s hard to tap into that in reality, you know? It’s hard to go like, “Oh yeah, that’s kind of how- like, how I like tah, you know, chase spirits.” (audience laughs) “Um, I’ll just tap into that part.”
So, anything to do with the supernatural has been very.. It’s-It was tough at first to find the reality, because you’re going, (sits up with chest puffed up) “Watch out for the wendigo,” you know? And you want to say it like, (imposing hero pose) “Dun-dah-duun.” But, um, (audience laughs) you have to remember that it’s real and that you’re very scared, but you know what it is. And so his knowledge of ghosts sometimes.
There’s a- there’s a scene that we just shot.. and I’m saying- and the girls saying, you know, “It said ‘Come to me.’” And I’m going, “What words.. did he use?” And she says, “Come to me like a million times.” And then it hits Sam like, “Oh it’s this.” And I’m like, (shrugs and Texas draw) “I don’t know what it is.”
But Sam knows his dad’s journal back and forth about all these demons. So, that’s been the toughest part. (smiles)
Where is it now? I see so.. many hands.

Jared: There are many causes that are close to my heart. I- I’m obviously- I-I’ve been very upfront about how I feel about rescuing dogs and.. just animal shelters in general. (audience claps and cheers) Yeah. (pats leg)

•(8:33 A, 4:10 R, 1:49 LM)- EyeA08JP;Q26b- Thoughts on Fandom; Fan-fiction, RPG’s, Wincest
Fan: Um, I actually have a question for you. Um, we would like to know.. My friend and I (giggle) would like to know, um, what you think about the fan fictions and the RPG’s (audience disapproval. Jared nods.) and most of all of Wincest? (audience disapproval intensifies. Jared closes his eyes, smiles, and nods.) Because, Jared, Jensen has said a few things. We wanna know your opinion.
Jared: I’m obviously a little.. spooked by Wincest. Because I’m like, “Is that.. (scrunched face) Jensen!? Ahh!” (audience laughs) Um. (laughs)
But the fan-fiction and the RPG’s I think is- is sort of an aspect of what I was talking about earlier about how everybody’s.. (gestures) taking a part in, um- in “Supernatural.” And they’re not just (shakes head) watching it to, you know- I don’t see anybody writing.. episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy,” you know? Like, “And then the doctor will say this and use a scalpel.” But they become really passionate.. about the show.
And then I think, um- I think especially for the fans of “Supernatural” it’s great. It’s a great.. (expanding gesture) learning tool and (expanding gesture) exploring tool to explore this world. (shrugs and nods) So, I’m supportive. (nods and smiles) (audience claps and cheers) (pats mic)

Fan: My favorite is “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”.
Jared: (nods) That’s my father’s favorite Western. (Fan: Yeah.) And that’s the Western that I-I sort of resort to if I’m talking about.. Westerns. That’s hard to beat. All the Sergio Leone.. um, Westerns are pretty incredible.
But, (nods) yeah, yeah. I’d have to agree with you on that.
Fan: What’s your favorite and what would you like to do? (?Star?) in a new one?
Jared: I’d say- I’ve- I’d totally say “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” (fan giggle) um, is my favorite, (holds up hand) not to just steal from you. But, that’s where originally got me, um, into Westerns. That’s my father’s.. second favorite movie. His favorite is “Ben-Hur.” (shrugs) (audience laughs and a woo) And his second favorite is “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” so he would watch it regularly.
And I’d- I’d sit down- At first when I was a kid I was like, (scrunched face) “I need more explosions,” you know? Like, “What’s with all this sand and stuff?” But, now as I’ve grown older and thought, “It’d be cool to be tough.” I’d definitely go with “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”.

Jared: (chuckles) I- Thank you.
Fan: Um, but, I- she just wanted me to ask you that.
Jared: Yeah. (shakes head) No, I never- I’ve never known. That’s- that’s the God’s honest truth. I-I- When I was working with, um- It’s such a name drop, but when I was working with Peter O’Toole, who’s obviously an amazing, amazing actor, arguably the greatest of all time, he was saying he’s never, ever, ever, ever in his life done a line to a mirror. He’s saying never.
And I.. thought it and I was like, “Let’s see, eight Oscar nominations and he doesn’t care what he looks like.” He says, uh, “It should just come out through you and you shouldn’t.. be worried about what you look like doing it, because it’ll come across.” So, I just sort of try and- I read things like that. Like, I read things Daniel Day-Lewis writes and, you know, Johnny Depp writes or actors, eh- “Inside the Actors Studio” and I try and.. be like them. (smug face) So, I can say I’m like them. (audience giggles) So, I’m a lot like Peter O’Toole. (shrugs) (audience laughs and claps)

Fan: (stands up and waves) Hi.
Jared: (up pitch) Hi! (audience chuckles)
Fan: Um, in “Bad Day at Black Rock” what was harder, all the falling down or being set on fire? (audience laughs)
Jared: (to audience) We had breakfast together. She waited all this time to ask so she.. (yanks himself to adjusts his posture) embarrass me in front of y’all guys.
Um.. (nods) the set on fire is always.. (squints) odd when they tell you. When they tell you, “You’re gonna do a funt scene-“ a-a funt scene? “A stunt scene.” (scrunches face) Funt? What’s a funt? (audience laughs) Uh, when they tell you you’re gonna do a stunt scene, like, a falling stunt scene, you’re like, “Okay. You know, I’ll put knee pads on.. make sure I don’t.. bust my kneecap open or my elbow or something.”
But, then when they tell you, “Oh yeah, next episode we’re gonna set you on fire.” You’re like, (leans forward laughing and hand swipes) “So, what’s going on next episode?” “We’re going to set you on fire.” (hand swipes) “Hah-hah-hah-hah.” (audience laughs)
So, uhm, that was definitely (laughs) kind of weird. So, I’d say being set on fire was probably the most uncomfortable thing (hand wave) I had to do for the show period. (shrugs) Because it’s.. fire. (audience laughs) (flips up hand and shrugs) Very simple, it’s not like, (flatten gesture) “Let’s keep it contained. It’s fire.” (flips up hand) It’s like putting a bear on set and going, (holds up hand) “Let’s hope he’s okay.” (audience laughs)
And plus! (gestures to audience) I mean, I have bad experience with fire. I wasn’t there on set, but during “House of Wax,” um, an errant fire burnt the stage down. So, you can’t control fire. (hands out gesture) And if you can then, (beckon gesture) we need it on set. (audience laughs) Um, so, (nods) I-I’d say that.

Fan: Um, I hear that you’re doing a “Friday the 13th”.
Jared: (nods) I am.
Fan: And, I’m just (audience claps and cheers) wondering… Um, is it- (Audience member: Don’t die!) is it kind of like a remake?
Jared: (to AM) I’ll try not.
Fan: Or, um.. is it like-
Jared: (nods) It’s a retelling. It’s more of a, um… I read that it was like, the difference between a prequel and a sequel and a midquel? (audience chuckles) I guess, it’s a midquel. It’s a- It’s a retelling of the story. (shakes head) It’s not a remake, um, of the original. Um, it’s-it’s sort of a whole new telling.
It’s almost more, like, another “Friday the 13th” movie then it is a remake of “Friday the 13th”.
•(4:32 RM, 4:11 R, 4:07 A, 5:22 ML, 0:47 T)- EyeA08JP;Q34b- Friday the 13th; unique hype factor

Fan: Like, how ‘bout them Arlington Cowboys. It just sounds retarded to me.
Jared: (shakes head) Yeah. (audience giggles)
Fan: I just wondered what you thought about that (giggles).

There’s no proper way to be like.. you know- They’re saying, “Hi, Jared. Uh, this is Peter.” “No sh--," you know? (audience laughs) (chuckles) So, I-I-I say- I say that. And you just-
What’s terrible is I had to forget.. I was working with him.. in order tah function. So, after I was done working with him I was like, (wobbles) “I didn’t enjoy it. I was-” (audience chuckles) You know, you can’t think about that you’re acting opposite (shrugs) a legend. You have to just go, “I’m just acting opposite an actor.” And so.
But, I had total (shakes head) fanboy moment. Like, (scrunches up and giggles), “Can I get your picture,” you know. (audience laughs) (smiles)
(looks around) Where did it go?

Jared: Is she taking care of him?
Fan: She’s taking beautiful care of him. (Jared: [shakes his head] Alright.) They’re gonna get- They’re gonna work on the engine. It’s like, the carburetor is, like, missing parts. They drove it 23,000 miles (Jared: [round nod] Oh yeah.) on only like five gallons.. a gas mile. (audience chuckles)
Jared: Dang.
Fan: But, it’s still staying in the “Supernatural” family and she’s sharing with us. She’s written a whole online account on LiveJournal. So, I just wanted you to know that John’s truck (Jared: Excellent.) is still in the family.
Jared: I’m very happy to hear that. When I- (audience claps)
Fan: And, he’s cared for and he’s loved. And he’s still around.
Jared: When I heard it got sold I was so sad. Jensen and I heard it at the same time and we were like, “..Whaaaat?” (audience giggles) But, um.. But as long as someone’s taking care of him.
Fan: He’s loved and.. He’s in the Supernatural family. He’s not lost.
Jared: (nods) Good. Tell her to keep care of him.
Fan: We will.
Jared: (smiles) Thank you. (looks to his right)
Smith: (off mic) Okay, last one.
Jared: (to audience) Okay, last one guys. (audience aw’s) I know. I’m sorry. Believe me, I’ll talk up here all day long. (audience chuckles)

I called Eric to ask him. He’s like, “Man, (shrugs) I don’t know.” (laughs) (audience laughs) So. I think they’re gonna do a lot of their writing this summer. Otherwise, I wish I’d know.
From what he said, it’s like something about Mary Winchester, so. (some audience woo and yes)
Jared: (to another fan) What is it?

Fan: (off mic) Um.. on the- in that episode.
Jared: Oh, she just said Lilith is a.. (shrugs) bad demon.
Fan: (off mic) But-but, you didn’t tell Dean.

Jared: (holds hand up) G’day mate.
Fan: Um, actually I want to say that I was stumped when I heard your original voice, because I used to watch, uhm, “Supernatural” in the dubbed German version. (audience giggles) (Jared: [off mic] [nods] Alright.) And there you got the most, um, softer voice (Jared: Huh.) and a little bit higher-
◘Jared Padalecki at EyeCon 8 by sarahmonious◘
Jared: (to audience) Great! When they told me they were gonna dub me with a German I was like, “Sweet. I’m gonna sound tough.” (Fan: No, no, no. You- you- you-) Now, (gestures to fan) she’s telling me there’s a German girl does the voice. (audience laughs)

Fan: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It be kind of soft, you know? And so, I was really like, “My god.” (audience cackles)
Jared: Yeah. (pumps eyebrows) Well.. (lowers pitch) I can talk a little lower if you want me to. (audience screams, claps, and laughs) (bends over laughing)
That actually hurt my throat.. (audience laughs) to try. So much for acting tough.
Well, thank you.

Fan: And, uh, the question I had was, uh, when you were shooting at the Paramount Studios, to hunt down, like, the studio ghost, I cracked up when they came up with the “Gilmore” joke. Was it something the writers did or was it kind of your idea to put it in?
Jared: In the.. episode “Hollywood Babylon” where we visit the, uh, Warner Brother Studio to go visit the “Gilmore Girls” set, which is funny because we shot it in Vancouver, um, not where they shot “Gilmore Girls.” But it was totally o-our writers decision, um, (nods) to put in “Gilmore Girls” and have me go, “Uhhhhh.” (hand swipe) and, you know, take off.
Which is a fun little, (tossing gesture) you know, for people who don’t know “Gilmore Girls” or do know “Gilmore Girls.” Um, I find myself trying to lower now ‘cause.. (audience laughs) I’m trying to be really cool. (audience chuckles)
Um, (laughs) (Fan: Thank you.) So, it was the writers. (nods) Yeah.
Fan: Thank you.

Smith overs a handshake to Jared. Jared kneels and offers Smith the mic. The audience screams and claps. Smith gives a bow and accepts the mic back. Jared pats Smith’s shoulder.
Smith: (thumbs to Jared) Give it up one more time. (audience cheers and claps. Jared claps) (points to Jared) Jared Padalecki! (Jared salutes)
Jared picks up his gifts and starts walking off stage.
Smith: Or as he’s become more professionally known, “EEEEE!” (audience laughs)
Jared salutes once more to Smith as he tries to step off stage.
Smith: Jared! Before you go.
Jared: (off mic) (turns to poster) Oh, yeah!
Smith: We’ve gotta.. (rubs the poster) We’ve saved a really nice spot for yah.

Jared: (turns to poster) (off mic) Nice!
Smith: Okay. (offers Jared sharpies) Silver or Black? Pick one.
Jared: (puts his gifts down and takes the black sharpie) (off mic) Draw on the picture?
Audience member: Yes! He said you could!
Audience member: Yes!
Audience member: Devil horns!
Smith: (laughs) Somebody’s suggesting devil horns. I wonder why? (Jared laughs)
Jared: (off mic) Alright.
Audience member: You need silver!
Audience member: You need silver to write on black!
Smith: Oh, if you’re gonna write on the- Yeah, if you’re gonna write on the- anywhere on the black you probably need this, (holds out the silver sharpie) the silver.
Jared: (off mic) No, I’ll use the silver. (audience chuckles)
Smith: Okay. (exchanges sharpies)
Jared: (off mic) (turns to audience) (holds hands out) This has been the hardest thing of my day. (Smith and audience laugh) (turns back to poster and signs his chest) Right on there. (audience cheers)
Smith: Alright. (audience claps, screams, and cheers) (to audience) And you know what’s so cute? (points to poster) He and Sandy match. They’re the only two that used silver. (audience aw’s) (aw’s)
Jared: (off mic) I change my mind. (Smith and audience laugh) (hands back the sharpie)
Smith: Thank you. Once again.
Jared waves and then turns to pick up his presents. The audience cheers and claps. Jared steps off stage and heads to the doors.
Jared: (off mic) I’ll see y’all guys soon. Bye (wiggles his fingers).
Jared leaves out the double doors with his entourage following him, signaling the end of the panel.

2023 in Books, Part 2
(posting a day late, oops)
This was a pretty great literary year for me. Even the books at the end of this list I enjoyed reading. I left out an anthology I read for class (Peach Pit is ... interesting) and a book of poetry written by someone I know, just because I don't know anything about poetry and don't want my personal feelings about the poet (she's great) to muddle it even further. I also already posted a separate list ranking the six children's/YA books I read. That still leaves thirty-one books to rank, though.
As usual, this is based entirely on personal preference/enjoyment and not necessarily on quality of writing or story. I reserve the right to change my mind about this ranking as soon as I post it because I am fickle like that. (Although I don't think I'm going to change my mind about my number 1 choice.) Here ya go.
31. The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling Dates Read: Dec. 12-13 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: A witch accidentally curses her ex-boyfriend, and by extension her small magical Georgia town. She and her ex have to lift the curse without falling in love (which of course they do anyway). One-sentence review: (directly from my GR review) Cute and witchy, just the thing to get you through finals week.
30. Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld Dates Read: April 28-May 7 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: A musician and comedy writer seem to hit it off when the musician guest stars on the comedy writer’s late-night show, only for the writer to blow it by assuming the musician is a shallow womanizer. A few years later, they rekindle their connection during pandemic lockdowns. One-sentence review: I liked the characters, but as usual Sittenfeld is more interested in commenting on whatever she saw on Twitter while she was writing this then she was on, like, writing a dramatic plot.
29. The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray Dates Read: Aug. 19-27 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: All of Jane Austen’s beloved couples (except the Tilneys), plus the Darcys’ son and the Tilneys’ daughter, attend a house party at the Knightleys’ where Mr. Wickham turns up and is immediately murdered. One-sentence review: This is what P.D. James’ Death Comes to Pemberley SHOULD have been.
28. Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus Dates Read: May 24-27 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: It’s the 1960s, and chemist Elizabeth Zott was kicked out of her Ph.D. program for reporting her supervisor for rape, and then loses her job after she becomes pregnant outside wedlock, and ends up starting her own STEM cooking show and some other stuff happens, look, I know you already read the reviews of this one. One-sentence review: It was fine, I just thought it was overrated.
27. The Paris Deception by Bryn Turnbull Dates Read: Aug. 23-Sept. 7 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: Two women immersed in the French art world in the 1930s and ‘40s defy their German occupiers by hiding, documenting, and sometimes copying “degenerate” art to keep it from the hands of high-ranking Nazi officials and sympathizers, or to keep it from being destroyed. One-sentence review: The main characters were great and I really like the focus on protecting art and culture from extermination, but the constant time jumps drove me nuts.
26. Forever, Interrupted by Taylor Jenkins Reid Dates Read: April 3-5 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: Less than two weeks into her marriage, a young woman is widowed and only meets her mother-in-law at the hospital. The two strangers find a way to navigate their grief together. One-sentence review: While the grief could be gut-wrenching due to Reid’s fantastic writing, the characters were nothing spectacular.
25. Hell’s Half-Acre: The Untold Story of the Benders, America’s First Serial Killer Family by Susan Jonusas Dates Read: Jan. 29-31 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: The Benders were a creepy family in late 19th Century Kansas who murdered people who stayed at their boarding house and then disappeared before they could be arrested. One-sentence review: I’m not super into true crime—it has to be historical for me to even start it--but I did like the look at life in the Midwest.
24. Galatea by Madeline Miller Dates Read: Jan. 6 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: Madeline Miller retells the Pygmalion myth in a way that doesn’t suck. One-sentence review: Miller smartly skips the gender misery by making this a short story and then delivers an extremely satisfying ending.
23. My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite Dates Read: July 26 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: Korede and Ayoola are sisters who fall for the same man. Ayoola is hot and a serial killer, and Korede is getting pretty tired of covering for her. One-sentence review: Despite (or perhaps because) all the characters are awful, this book STAYS with you, and I feel like it would be a blast to talk about in a drunken book club. Note: I listened to the audiobook and want to give narrator Adepero Oduye a shout out.
22. The Weaver and the Witch Queen by Genevieve Gornichec Dates Read: July 24-Aug. 17 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: Three friends in Medieval Scandinavia find themselves in the middle of a Game of Thrones-esque rivalry for the crown and a deadly battle between supernatural forces. One-sentence review: Good story and I liked the characters, but it moved too slowly sometimes.
21. The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle by Jennifer Ryan Dates Read: May 7-10 GoodReads Rating: Four stars (I was feeling more generous about Grace marrying Hugh than I am right now) Summary: A sewing circle in a small English village in the 1940s decide to pool their talents and resources to help English brides wear the perfect white gown to their weddings, clothing rations be damned. One-sentence review: Ryan excels at writing about women and civilians in wartime, and I would have ranked this so much higher if it hadn’t ended with the best character marrying the worst one.
20. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Dates Read: Jan. 31-Feb. 8 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: Aging actress Evelyn Hugo (who is not Elizabeth Taylor, by which I mean she absolutely is Elizabeth Taylor) invites a young journalist to write her life story. One-sentence review: The plot was engaging and thought-provoking, but I never could decide how I felt about Evelyn.
19. A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher Dates Read: Oct. 28-Nov. 1 GoodReads Rating: Three stars Summary: An archaeologist visits her mother at the family home in North Carolina only to find that her grandmother’s ghost is haunting it. But how do you banish a ghost once you learn it’s keeping something far worse at bay? One-sentence review: Of all the haunted house books I read this year, this one was the worst, and yet it was still great.
19. To Swoon and to Spar by Martha Waters (That’s right, I ranked a trashy Regency romance above both Romantic Comedy AND Lessons in Chemistry) Dates Read: May 17-24 GoodReads Rating: Four stars (Objectively, this was too many, but I also don’t care.) Summary: When Viscount Penvale’s uncle promises to sell him back the family estate for a steal if Penvale marries his uncle’s ward Jane, Penvale reluctantly agrees. He and Jane make an agreement to leave each other alone, but Penvale didn’t expect to fall in love with her. Nor did he expect his family house to be haunted. One-sentence review: The Regency Vows series just keeps getting better, honestly.
17. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson Dates Read: Aug. 31-Oct. 13 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: Humor writer Bill Bryson and his on-again-off-again friend Katz decide to hike the Appalachian Trail, and Bryson tells you all about its history and natural resources along the way. There are moose, but no (confirmed) bears. One-sentence review: This book got me really into nature and hiking again.
16. The Shining by Stephen King Dates Read: Dec. 1-4 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: I know you know what this book’s about. One-sentence review: Super tense, riveting look into the mind of a toxic, self-absorbed abuser who doesn’t need to be anywhere near blizzards, haunted houses, or children.
15. Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid Dates Read: July 12-23 GoodReads Rating: Five stars (Objectively, this book probably deserves that. Subjectively, I like Regency romances and journalists better than sports stars.) Summary: A retired tennis star full of rage and ambition makes a comeback to keep a younger player from breaking her record. One-sentence review: An absorbing, balanced take on the pressures women athletes face, plus a heart-warming father-daughter story, with some romance and female friendships to round it out.
14. Swamp Story by Dave Barry Dates Read: Dec. 30 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: There is actually too much going on to summarize this book, but suffice to say it involves a desperate single mom, her shirtless fame-hounding ex-boyfriend, a failed journalist with a drinking problem, and a lot of people in the Florida Everglades looking for a cryptid OR Confederate gold OR pythons. One-sentence review: Dave Barry writes about Florida like it’s a drunk, eccentric relative who everyone hangs around at the family reunion even though he smells bad, because he has the best stories.
13. Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas Dates Read: Oct. 15-28 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: During the Mexican-American War, a Wuthering Heights-esque couple learn their homeland is being stalked by vampires. One-sentence review: You root for the couple, you root for the Mexicans, you even root for the vampires once or twice, but you never root for the Texas Rangers. Note: The couple is Wuthering Heights-esque in the sense that he is poor, she is rich, they were childhood sweethearts, and then they were separated—not in the toxic incest way.
12. A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall Dates Read: July 12-23 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: A trans woman believed to be dead at the Battle of Waterloo reinvents herself and returns home to England, only to find that her best friend has been consumed by grief over her death. As she helps him heal—and he slowly falls for her—she battles with whether to tell him who she really is. One-sentence review: I'm a sucker for love stories in which the couple are torn asunder, believe they will never see each other again, and then are reunited unexpectedly. Note: This actually would have ranked a lot higher if all the main couple’s angst wasn’t basically resolved in the first half. The second half is fine but not as good.
11. The Lover by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Dates Read: Dec. 26 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: A young woman must choose between two potential “lovers” who come from the woods in this dark fairy tale novella. One-sentence review: Finally, a good werewolf book.
10. The Dark Queens: The Bloody Rivalry That Forged the Medieval World by Shelley Puhak Dates Read: April 4-14 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: Puhak writes about the feud between rival Merovingian queens Fredegund and Brunhild in sixth century western Europe. One-sentence review: It’s like Game of Thrones, but real, shorter, and with more women and less sexual assault.
9. Lafayette in the Somewhat United States by Sarah Vowell Dates Read: Dec. 14-25 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: Vowell writes Lafayette’s biography, focusing on his and the larger French role in the American Revolution, all while musing on our country’s inability to agree on anything. One-sentence review: Vowell’s irreverent essay style is just the tone needed to tackle the oft-romanticized American Revolution.
8. The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas Dates Read: July 23-26 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: In the aftermath of the Mexican War for Independence, a young bride moves to her landed husband’s country estate, only to find that the house is super haunted and her new in-laws super racist. One-sentence review: Your standard haunted house story, except the ghost is colonialism.
7. Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune Dates Read: Oct. 29-31 GoodReads Rating: Five stars (was probably generous, but the ending had just made me cry, so) Summary: When workaholic Wallace dies, his spirit is sent to a teashop for transition to the afterlife. But after a few weeks of hanging around teashop owner and “ferryman” Hugo, his reaper, and the ghosts of Hugo’s dog and grandfather, Wallace realizes he doesn’t want to leave what he’s coming to think of as his family. One-sentence review: A lovely mixture of funny and sad, this book is a nuanced look at death and found family.
6. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia Dates Read: Nov. 1-6 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: A debutante from Mexico City visits her cousin’s haunted house in the countryside where she’s pulled into a mystery surrounding her cousin’s eugenics-obsessed in-laws. One-sentence review: Noemi is a fantastic character, and the plot is engrossing, which is good because you will hate all the other characters.
5. Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer Dates Read: Aug. 9-29 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: In 1996, Outside magazine sent Jon Krakauer to cover the burgeoning commercialization of Mount Everest. When Krakauer climbed the mountain himself, he and his team got caught in a freak snowstorm that resulted in what was then the worst disaster in the history of the mountain. One-sentence review: Apart from being a really tense and riveting account of a brutal natural disaster in an already brutal environment, Krakauer’s account of the 1996 storm on Everest raises questions about who should be on the world’s highest mountain and whether money and fame have blinded guides and climbers to the risks of tackling the summit.
4. The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty Dates Read: Nov. 20-30 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: Amina al-Sirafi, a retired smuggler and single mom on the Arabian peninsula, has to get her old band crew back together for the promise of more money than they’ve ever dreamed of when wealthy grandmother hires Amina to rescue her kidnapped granddaughter. But things go awry when the crew learns the girl is with an evil crusader with plans to unleash dark magic and monsters on the world. Inspired by the rich mythology, religions, and history of the Middle East, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean. One-sentence review: I have not had so much fun reading a fantasy novel since I was a kid reading Harry Potter and I can’t wait for the sequel.
3. Lone Women by Victor LaValle Dates Read: Oct. 5-12 GoodReads Rating: Four stars Summary: In the early 1900s, a woman burns her parents’ mangled bodies in their California farmhouse and flees to Montana with a secret locked in a heavy trunk. One-sentence review: Frankenstein meets Calamity Jane in this horror Western about race and female friendships.
2. We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian Dates Read: Oct. 28-Nov. 9 GoodReads Rating: Five stars Summary: Two men reporting for a progressive newspaper in 1950s New York fall in love. One-sentence review: I mean, it’s journalists in love in the 1950s, and one of them is investigating police corruption and the other covered a Civil Rights meeting in DC, so of course I loved this book.
1. The Correspondents: Six Women Writers on the Front Lines of World War II by Judith Mackrell Dates Read: Nov. 27-Dec. 26 (during finals and holidays with family—I don’t think I could have finished the book if it wasn’t so good) GoodReads Rating: Five stars Summary: Mackrell covers the WWII careers of six journalists—a correspondent in Berlin who ingratiated herself in the Nazi Party to tell America about Hitler’s plans for world domination; a photojournalist for Vogue who took pictures from the Blitz to Dachau; a young American whose coverage of both sides of the Spanish Civil War catapulted her to journalistic stardom; Martha Gellhorn whose fury at her husband (you’ve heard of him) compelled her to illegally stow away on board a hospital ship and cover the invasion of Normandy from Omaha Beach while helping wounded soldiers; a rogue freelancer who broke the story of the invasion of Poland and whose thrill-chasing career took her from there to Greece to North Africa and beyond; and Helen Kirkpatrick, who covered the liberation of Paris while Hemingway was getting plastered at the Ritz.
Review: There is too much to say about this book. Mackrell did an incredible job. These journalists’ triumphs and tragedies play out alongside the triumphs and tragedies of the world’s biggest conflict. Each woman had different motivations and goals, from thrill-seeking to career-making, from spite to idealism to simply a love of journalism and dogged search for the truth. While Sigrid Schultz’s Chicago editor applauded Hitler’s control of Germany, Sigrid warned his readers of Hitler’s ambition. When the world turned a blind eye to Hitler’s military build-up and annexation of half of Europe, Virginia Cowles and Helen Kirkpatrick wrote furiously against Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement. And while the rest of the world celebrated the end of the war in Europe, Lee Miller swept through Dachau taking pictures and refusing to ignore the human cost of fascism and war.
All of this was at great personal risk. The Nazis tapped Sigrid’s phone and searched her house until she was finally forced to flee to America in the early 1940s (where her editor promptly benched her for three and a half years). Virginia dodged bombs in Madrid, and Helen dodged bullets in Paris. And Lee Miller defiantly washed off the stink of Dachau in Hitler’s own bath, which was immortalized in a photo her equally defiant boyfriend took in the days after the Fuhrer’s death. Mackrell’s prose also gets into the nitty gritty of correspondent life, how the reporters all camped out in hotels and spent their days chasing stories and their nights drinking whiskey. She discusses the friendships and rivalries—Marth and Virginia became great friends in Spain and eventually wrote a play together satirizing the misogyny they faced during the war. And while the stars are the six I mentioned above, cameos include Mary Welch (Hemingway’s wife after Martha), Dorothy Thompson, Vogue editor Audrey Withers, and “Maggie the indestructible” who convinced an American commander to let her go on a bombing mission over North Africa, paving the way for other women correspondents on the front line after the US entered the war. Plus there are appearances from Picasso, both Randolph and Winston Churchill, Eleanor Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, David Lloyd George, the Duke of Windsor after he abdicated, Hemingway of course, and half the Nazi high command. Mackrell uses the women’s own words to describe the bombing of Madrid, the mass evacuation from Paris, the refugee crises in Eastern Europe, and the Night of Long Knives in Germany. Every moment is riveting as Mackrell and the women she writes about pull you into Europe of the 1940s.

Note: Eddie will not be able to answer questions posted during the livestream nor ones left on our social media accounts
This week’s questions:
1. I’d enjoy hearing from both of you about LGBTQ+ characters in Noir.
Marjorie (from the poor part of Connecticut)
2. Are there any Film Noir Foundation restorations in the Flicker Alley pipeline this year?
Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
3. Have you ever considered The Orpheum Theater in Phoenix, Arizona for a NOIR CITY showing? Also, are there any great film noirs from the golden age that are not readily available?
Vince from Arizona
4. In a recent ASK EDDIE, you said that "The 13th Letter” is unavailable for showings because of rights issues, Are there any other noirs that similarly cannot be shown because of rights issues?
Bill Miller, Chicago
5. Who do you consider the best cinematographer of the classic film era?
Harry, West Chester, PA
6. I recently engaged in a debate with someone about the concept of film. I wanted to get your perspective. The other person posits that the femme fatale trope was a sexist derivative of men's postwar angst of women taking their jobs and workplace. I argued that men and women in noir are oftentimes equally culpable, equally shrewd and equally guilty in their indiscretions. What are your thoughts on these arguments?
Andrew, Clayton, North Carolina
7. TCM showed “Not As A Stranger” and I thoroughly enjoyed it. IMDB says that movie is a Film Noir. I can’t see it. What do you think?
Stephen, Allen, Texas
8. I recently saw the Italian neorealist film “Bitter Rice”, which has many film noir characteristics. Can you recommend other neorealist films that might also be regarded as film noir?
Ron
9. It's hard to think of a movie more detested, shunned and now ignored than "Executive Action," a 1973 political drama, directed by David Miller and written by Dalton Trumbo, that blames the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on a right-wing capitalist conspiracy. I'd welcome any comments you have about "Executive Action."
Paul from "Fargo" land
10. I recently watched “Journey into Light” (1951) starring Sterling Hayden and found it surprisingly emotionally moving. Are there any film noir movies that you find especially moving? Also, do you consider this movie a "religious noir"?
Dan
11. One great American crime writer you've never mentioned is John D. Macdonald, the creator of Travis McGee. Macdonald considered Victor Nunez's 1984 adaptation of his novel “A Flash of Green” to be the best film version of his work. What do the two of you think of Macdonald's work? And have either of you ever seen “A Flash of Green”?
Doug, Silver Spring, MD
12. One of the many pleasures of viewing classic films noir is spotting the various ways in which the filmmakers circumvent the Hays Code and express graphic violence, et cetera, despite the limitations forced upon them, with clever filmmaking techniques. Can you think of any other good examples of this sort of Hays Code circumvention, in which a film is able to express graphic content without explicitly showing it?
Sam from Iowa
13. Where is it that you tape introductions for NOIR ALLEY? Are you given a blooper reel each year? Have you ever finished it in one single take. Do you have a favorite hotel you stay at when in L.A. or do you not stay at same place each visit?
Alan, San Anselmo, CA.
14. I came across an excellent book called “San Francisco Noir” which shows real locations from SF movies and proves interesting anecdotes about the locations and the films themselves. At the end of the book is a description of the Danger and Despair Knitting Circle, which sounds like an elite private showing of various noirs. Does this still exist, and do you have stories about this group?
Phil from Boston
15. My question addresses some fantasy casting as well as historic casting. Who would both of you cast as Noir Brothers and Noir Sisters. What would be the best combustible pairs?
William from Lafayette

[The Clone]. Please welcome [Evan Sterling (He/Him)] to Huntsville, WV. They are an [31]-year-old [VISITOR] who lives in [COMMUNE]. You may see them around working as [UNEMPLOYED].
FULL NAME: Evan Sterling FACECLAIM: Cody Christian HEIGHT: 5'8 AGE: 31 DOB: April 15th OCCUPATION: unemployed ROLE: hunter IDENTITY: he/him ORIENTATION: bisexual RELATIONSHIP STATUS: single
biography
tw shark attack, car accident
evan grew up on the coast of california in santa monica where his family owned a rather large beach house. it wasn’t the vacation home, it was their home home where his parents chose to raise him. because of this he was always at the beach, often his parents taking turns on who was going to take him that day and for the most part it landing on his dad since he was teaching him to surf. it was a great bonding experience for the two of them, finding different ways to bond with his mother as he got older but surfing was always going to be him and his dads thing. it gave him a general interest in sports after seeing beach volleyball one too many times and trying it himself which then turned into trying any sport his family would let him.
his mom always supported him and loved that he was so open to trying whatever he set his mind to but eventually he landed on football and lacrosse, more so football in high school since lacrosse wasn’t offered in many. he’d also tried soccer and basketball, even trying regular volleyball but none of them stuck the same.
evan had gotten really good at football by the age of fifteen until one day, on a surfing session with his dad things changed for him. during that session a shark had mistaken his board for a seal and attacked him, latching onto his right side and pulled him under for what felt like forever while his dad rushed to try and help. luckily he knew how to get a shark to release his son as he grabbed him and dragged him back to shore where on lookers stared terrified.
evan was lucky, not only because he was alive but he managed to escape with all of his limbs still in tact but it was touch and go for a while having spent the better part of a month in a coma to recover. his life looked like it was going to be changed forever but he was determined to not let that happen so when he was cleared to start doing physical therapy he got to it right away. often times the PT had to remind him to not push through the pain because he’d make his recovery even longer which happened at first but eventually it stuck with him, taking his time and letting himself heal naturally instead of forcing it.
he didn’t return to school until a year later when he was fully cleared, PT sessions were still happening but he didn’t need them as frequent anymore. his teachers and friends welcoming him back, students curious about what happened and wanting to ask questions but felt it was rude, eyes always felt like they were on him now: the kid who survived a shark attack.
there were the few that asked to see the scars, the few who tried to steal looks in the locker room and for once this confident kid didn’t feel so confident. evan got used to it however after a while when things finally died down and he went on to graduate, picking a college on the opposite side of the country to attend. his parents had followed him and he was happy for that fact since they moved to a town a few cities over. the move wasn’t spontaneous either, it was actually evans idea since his parents wanted to move anyway and they thought the idea was great so they could still remain as close as they were.
college started and he made a new group of friends, partied with the frat boys and even joined in on a couple of road trips that were planned. graduating college was something different and the close group of friends he made all graduated together and stayed in touch for as long as possible but eventually they grew apart.
after years of no communication one of them reached out to the group to catch up and it was like none of them had ever stopped talking before. they never really settled down, some got jobs in their fields while others ended up realizing the passion they once had wasn’t there anymore and had actually gone back to get a new degree, one they felt more passionate about. evan was one of those that had gone back and since spring break was happening soon they planned a road trip to florida like theyd done back then.
that trip landed them in huntsville where upon entering town an animal had jumped in the middle of the road causing the driver to swerve, flipping and eventually landed in a ditch. evan was the first to wake up of the group and crawled out of the car, bruised and seemingly unbroken but when he tried to use his phone to call for help there was nothing. he limped his way into town and found the first person he could, telling them what happened which caused a weird reaction he thought. they jumped into action however and found his friends in the car, a few of them awake by that time but stuck and unable to get out but eventually got free while evan was taken to the clinic.
he was grateful his entire friend group made it out alive, some had broken bones, a concussion, cuts and bruises but alive nonetheless. now he stays at the commune where him and his friends chose to recover and ended up enjoying it enough to stay.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force #99: “Larry Miller Hair System” | April 26th, 2010 - 12:00AM | S08E11
Carl receives a knock on his door from famous actor/comedian Larry Miller. You might remember him from various motion pictures directed by Christopher Guest (which he mentions in the episode), his various stand-up sets on late night television (also mentioned), or his appearance in the Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job episode entitled “Hair” (not mentioned; a black stain on his filmography).
Larry is selling a hair system, of which he only has one. It’s a metal pompadour you graft to the scalp. Carl is lead to a van where he is treated to a video simulation of his life if he had hair. We see he’s a god-fearing, law-abiding family man who has a beautiful and pure-hearted wife and two children. He’s thoughtful, well-adjusted, and a sterling example of what you can achieve with a good attitude and a good work ethic.
Real life Carl is disgusted, and when Larry abandons him to go gambling (he is a degenerate gambler with a lot of debts, which is the reason he’s hawking this), real Carl starts talking to simulation Carl. It turns out they can speak to and hear one another! Carl goads simulation Carl into behaving more like IRL Carl, and forces him to lose his job and ditch his family. Simulation Carl is basically just having a psychotic break, believing IRL Carl to be the voice of god. After browbeating simulation Carl into shaving his scalp and pasting some of the hair to his upperlip, simulation Carl simply blows his own brains out. Carl, whose genuinely self-destructive nature has caused him to be numb to the existential implications of what he's done, shrugs it off, declaring that it was fun.
The episode ends with Carl having the hair system installed to his scalp, which is now infected. As he boasts about his new doo to the Aqua Teens (who only appear in this one scene), we cut out to a scene in which the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past From The Future is playing this video to an army of robots, declaring that they are to be tasked with compromising Carl, who he believes is a robot. Hey, those robots look like the same robots robbing the bank from the Aqua Teen theme song! WOW! I am impressed!!
This one’s reasonably funny, and I’m happy to see Carl episodes on the show. I don’t know if I was laughing so much toward the beginning; Carl’s abrasive nature wasn’t really yielding too many laughs at first and sorta felt like a lot of the same. Luckily it eventually went somewhere. Say what you will about Carl, even when he’s not particularly funny, the writing rarely fucks him up as a character. The writing and performance always honors who he truly is. What a beautiful thing.
Also, I am struggling to name another show or movie that has this exact concept going for it. Sure, cartoons break the fourth wall and argue with narrators or storytellers all the time. That’s an invention of the golden age of animation. But I can’t recall a movie or episodic piece of television that’s just about a guy fucking with a simulation version of himself for no good reason, and it happening in a sorta unexpected way. This was a really good concept and I wish the writing were a little better. If they wrote funnier jokes for this, this episode would be a bonafide classic. Not too bad, though. It came within spitting distance.

Title: let your mother know you're safe and by the time she wakes (we've driven through the state) (we'll have driven through the night) Fandom: Teenage Bounty Hunters Pairing: Sterling x April Chapters: 1/1 Words: 29,794 Tags: Runaway AU, roadtrip au, Angst, Processing Trauma, Very Long Oneshot, Post Season 1 Summary:
The phone rang only once before April’s voice burst through the speaker, loud and frantic. “Sterling!” There was a pause, the sound of April taking a deep breath before her tone softened. “What’s going on? Are you okay?” Sterling hesitated, her mind racing. She could tell April everything, pour out the truth in a flood of words and tears, but the thought of reliving it all made her throat tighten. Instead, she chose a different path, one that had just formed in the back of her mind, a wild, reckless idea that was the only thing keeping her from falling apart. “Run away with me.” The words tumbled out before she could stop them, raw and desperate.

Billionaire romance books - my take on them. Who doesn't love a billionaire.
Fetching a Billionaire
Juliet Sterling
105 pages, Kindle Edition
Published March 21, 2024
A cute story and easy read. Unfortunately, there are errors that a good editing job would have taken care of. The worst is in the beginning his parents are dead & he was raised by his grandfather. Later in the book they have dinner with his parents...obviously not dead.
A 3 star review
The Boss #1
The Boss: Book One
Cari Quinn, Taryn Elliott
156 pages, Kindle Edition
First published October 27, 2015
as filthy as you think and a boring as hell. Nothing but a fuck-fest, the conversations are boring, the characters are boring. I skipped around to see if there were redeemable parts...nope.
Got free from the author.
A 1 star review
Cocky Bastard Series #2
Stuck-Up Suit
Vi Keeland, Penelope Ward
245 pages, ebook
First published April 11, 2016
better than I'd thought it would be. I got it free from the author and took a chance. The characters were well written, the plot was interesting. An adult romance book with the cursing and sex scenes. At least the sex wasn't graphic, thank goodness for that.
Got free from the author.
A 4 star review
Undercover Billionaire
Amy Andrews
188 pages, Kindle Edition
Published March 31, 2020
In 2024 romance it has hot sex and a few curse words. The writing reminds me of an old fashioned Harlequin novel, same kind of plot. An interesting story & characters that kept me reading.
A 3 star review

Double Champ Guidelines: The best way to change into the following DC, Nunes, Cejudo or McGregor
Andres Waters, ESPNApr 26, 2024, 08:00 AM ET -
-
1 AssociatedTo earn a title shot, a fighter should work their means up the division's ranks, progressively taking over more difficult opponents whereas dealing with extra strain to win. And, in lots of circumstances, simply successful is not even sufficient -- loads of fighters have piled up resolution wins solely to get handed over in favor of somebody with fewer wins however extra finishes or fights which are thought of extra entertaining. Each fighter's entry level within the UFC is completely different, although. Some fighters needed to work their means up from the figurative backside of the roster -- like welterweight champion Leon Edwards -- who made his first look within the Octagon in 2014 and compiled a powerful 11-2, 1 NC document earlier than successful the title in 2022.Different fighters, corresponding to gentle heavyweight champ Alex Pereira, seemed to be fast-tracked to a title shot. Pereira joined the UFC after an in depth kickboxing profession that featured a storied rivalry with then-middleweight champ Israel Adesanya. Due to the hype round a possible matchup in MMA between the 2, after simply three fights within the Octagon, Pereira received a title shot towards Adesanya, which he received. Finally, it would not matter the way you get the title. Simply do not let anybody hear you utter the phrases "double champ" with out it.
Step two: Clear your division or Change into a famous person
That is the place we hit a fork within the street, however finishing considered one of these choices is critical to earn a shot at a second gold strap. And although each of the paths are difficult, one is undoubtedly preferable. Listed below are the choices: regularly beat title challengers till you have gone via everybody or change into an simple famous person.Choice A: Beat all challengersplay2:07McGregor remembers story of dropping stuntmenConor McGregor remembers how he dropped stuntmen on the set of his new film "Roadhouse" with Jake Gyllenhaal."Turning into a champ is almost unattainable, however clearing your division is even tougher," Cormier stated.Clearing out the division is the most typical path. If claiming the throne is grueling, then sustaining your place there's no simpler. In some circumstances, beating fighters on the best way up is not sufficient. Typically, you continue to need to tackle foes you have already defeated en path to successful a title, and in uncommon conditions, you would have to do this a number of instances.
Males's flyweights Matheus Nicolau and Alex Perez go head-to-head on Saturday to find out who will transfer nearer to a title shot.UFC Combat Night time: Nicolau vs. Perez Saturday, April 27, UFC Apex, Las Vegas • Foremost card: 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+ • Prelims: 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+Subscribe to ESPN+ to get unique reside UFC occasions, weigh-ins and extra; Dana White's Contender Collection; and extra unique MMA content material. Simply have a look at Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo. Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko. We noticed Moreno-Figueiredo 4 instances. Volkanovski-Holloway squared off thrice. And Grasso vs. Shevchenko 3 is anticipated to be booked following the conclusion of the upcoming season of "The Final Fighter."Just lately, there have been two champions who did clear their division and nonetheless did not get a shot at turning into a double champion, former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman and former males's bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling.Usman had strung collectively the second-longest win streak in UFC historical past, which featured 5 title defenses earlier than dropping the title in 2022. Sterling had fought via the gauntlet within the promotion's 135-pound division to win the title and had three profitable title defenses earlier than dropping the belt final yr. After dropping their titles, each fighters determined to maneuver up in weight."What Usman has performed is so troublesome," Cormier stated. "I believe the times of us seeing these lengthy title runs is finished. In at this time's MMA, three title defenses is taken into account a profitable title reign."Choice B: Change into the following Conor McGregorThe final time Conor McGregor was on high of the MMA world was Nov. 12, 2016, when he defeated Eddie Alvarez to change into a two-division champion. Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Getty PhotosAlternatively, the best way to bypass all the things talked about in Choice A is to be a generational famous person. Change into such an enormous title and model throughout the sport that it is so financially helpful for the promotion that they cannot afford to not provide you with that likelihood.Nonetheless, out of the 600-plus fighters the UFC has contracted, Conor McGregor is the one fighter to do that. Loads of different stars have come via the Octagon, together with Jon Jones, who's broadly thought to be one of the best MMA fighter of all time. However even the MMA GOAT cannot examine to the stardom that the person often called "Infamous" has reached."Conor McGregor is the exception, not the rule," Cormier stated.Whereas McGregor's stage of success out and in of the Octagon is one thing all fighters aspire to achieve, doing so can solely occur organically. This can be a guidelines for a path to double champion glory, however there isn't a direct path to turning into a world star.
Step three: Study the panorama
Apart from wins and losses contained in the Octagon, timing stands out as the largest think about figuring out if a champion will get a shot at a second title. Is there a combat card that wants an enormous headliner? Is there a champion who makes for a compelling matchup? Is that champion accessible for a possible matchup? Is the matchup one thing that additionally is smart from the UFC's perspective? These are just some questions that have to be answered to grasp the panorama earlier than organising such a uncommon alternative.
Good Man/Unhealthy Man
Former UFC double champ Daniel Cormier and former gentle heavyweight contender Chael Sonnen talk about all issues MMA ... and extra. The present airs on ESPN2, ESPN+ and likewise on ESPN Audio and YouTube. Podcast | YouTube | Extra MMA When Cormier beat Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 to additionally declare the heavyweight title in 2018, Cormier stated he was the beneficiary of filling a necessity for the UFC and the heavyweight division on the good time."Star energy is overstated in MMA," Cormier stated. "In my case, I did not have this huge star energy. I did effectively, however I wasn't promoting huge pay-per-views. Numerous was in regards to the worth of the matchup."For me, it was a possibility based mostly on Stipe not having many choices. I had fought Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. I had simply crushed Volkan Oezdemir. And Stripe had performed the identical factor. He had simply crushed Francis Ngannou, who had primarily run via the division. So Miocic was missing a challenger and I used to be in the precise place on the proper time. It simply made sense."Cormier stated two of the opposite double champs additionally benefited from comparable conditions. Henry Cejudo, who held the lads's flyweight and bantamweight titles from 2019 to 2020, was keen to combat a harmful man in Marlon Moraes for the then-vacant bantamweight title. And Amanda Nunes, who held the ladies's bantamweight and featherweight titles from 2017 to 2021, went as much as featherweight to tackle Cris Cyborg for the then-vacant belt.Within the present period of MMA, the standard of the matchup when pairing two champions is extra essential to the UFC matchmakers than the person stardom of the fighters. With the UFC missing a number of fighters who might be thought of world stars, exterior of McGregor, Cormier stated the following champion to problem for a second belt will profit from the matchup being so marketable that the UFC cannot move it up.Assessing the panorama is a singular course of for every fighter, together with what changes can be crucial for them to make a transfer to compete in a brand new division. Nonetheless, step one is common: determine a possible opponent. To choose that opponent, a fighter will need to have an understanding of their physique and their capabilities. Many fighters cannot add sufficient weight to maneuver as much as one other division. And most fighters aren't capable of reduce any extra weight to make the restrict at a decrease division. Then, if that fighter could make weight, can they nonetheless compete at a championship stage with how their physique adjusts to being in a brand new division?
Step 4: Name your shot
Anderson Silva, left, and Chael Sonnen face off forward of their legendary matchup at UFC 117. Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Getty PhotosLike in step three, timing is equally essential, however on this step, timing is all as much as the person fighter. Even when it is not for a title -- or a second title -- when trying to get booked for an enormous combat, it is all about technique. We have seen loads of callouts that labored: Chael Sonnen's postfight callout of Anderson Silva, Michael Chandler's name for a combat with McGregor at UFC 274, and even Merab Dvalishvili's fixed pestering of Sean O'Malley by way of social media to construct public curiosity. There have additionally been much more callouts that did not work. Take into account Aljamain Sterling calling for a rematch with O'Malley using his phone whereas within the crowd at UFC 293 -- it was not obtained effectively by MMA followers."When and the way you name to your shot issues," Cormier stated. "As soon as you have performed all the things else, you simply need to plant the seed. You may say it to the general public, or you'll be able to simply say it to Dana White or Hunter Campbell. You need to promote your self and the matchup, it could't be delicate. If the callout works, prepare to arrange for the toughest combat of your life."
How do double champs have an effect on the game and people round it?
After reclaiming bantamweight gold at UFC 277, Amanda Nunes retired from the game as a two-division champion. Carmen Mandato/Getty PhotosThis concept of a guidelines is barely good if it is smart to those that must abide by it when trying to problem for a second title. Nonetheless, some fighters and even a reigning champion would not thoughts it."I believe is situational," O'Malley stated to ESPN. "I do not thoughts that because the rule, like 'Hey, you'll be able to't go up but. You have to defend the belt.' Alright, let's do it."

Megan Anderson, who challenged Nunes for her featherweight title at UFC 259 in 2021, is aware of all too effectively about how a champ-champ impacts different ranked fighters of their division."It stalemates the divisions of each titleholders concerned, " Anderson stated. "Simply have a look at the state of the light-weight division. You have got , that has each of his title defenses towards a males's featherweight. No one within the division."And have a look at how that affected the division, Justin Gaethje was speculated to be first in line for a shot, however as a result of he wished and wanted to remain energetic, he took a harmful combat towards Max Holloway and misplaced. Now, Gaethje value himself a shot on the title."Whereas Anderson did get her shot on the featherweight title, throughout most of Nunes' time on the UFC roster, she was defending her bantamweight belt. However Nunes did make back-to-back defenses of her 145-pound title in 2020 towards Felicia Spencer after which towards Anderson. When Nunes made that second protection at 145 kilos, it ruffled some bantamweight contender feathers."Some bantamweight fighters felt that featherweights have been taking away their shot at competing for a title," Anderson stated. "And one fighter even reached out to me personally, complaining that I used to be 'delaying her likelihood' to problem for the bantamweight title."Vera and former light-weight champion Rafael Dos Anjos each really feel that whereas there are circumstances when it is smart for a champion to earn a shot at one other title, some champions might view it as simply a possibility to take an enormous combat with out the chance of dropping their belt."I believe that is a means so that you can combat, get one other combat and nonetheless preserve your belt," Dos Anjos informed ESPN. "It is sort of protected, proper? You get one other combat, you get an excellent payday and get an opportunity of getting a brand new belt, however if you happen to lose, you continue to have your belt."Vera agreed that taking a combat towards one other champ is safer than taking over a challenger throughout the division."I consider it is much less strain while you're not speculated to lose," he informed ESPN. "When the man coming from the highest 5 is hungry actually making an attempt to kill you. That man is a scary man."
Which fighters might problem for double champ standing subsequent?
"Suga" Sean O'Malley is a robust candidate to be a future double champ within the UFC. Cooper Neill/Getty PhotosIn accordance with Cormier and Anderson, there aren't many present champions who've already performed sufficient throughout their title run to be clear candidates for an opportunity at one other title, however a number of names have piqued their curiosity: Edwards, O'Malley, Pereira and strawweight champion Zhang Weili. We might see them within the Octagon reverse one other champion in the event that they play their playing cards proper.Edwards: Of all the present champs, Edwards has the longest energetic title run. And, as talked about earlier, he needed to undergo almost everybody on the high of the division to get a title shot. Then, to get the belt, he needed to beat Usman, broadly thought of the most effective welterweight fighters of all time. Plus, he is a star within the U.Ok. Cormier and Anderson really feel that Edwards may need a pair extra defenses, however he is shut."Edwards might be due for a possibility quickly, however there are such a lot of nice matchups that may be made for him at welterweight," Anderson stated. "Shavkat Rakhmonov has been on a tear. Belal Muhammad remains to be ready for his title combat. Plus there are up-and-coming contenders like Jack Della Maddalena and Ian Garry, who might put themselves within the title image quickly."O'Malley: He is without doubt one of the champs who has already referred to as his shot at one other champion. After his dominant unanimous resolution win over "Chito" Vera at UFC 299, he referred to as out featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. However O'Malley has no downside issuing out challenges for opponents who might make large fights, even when which means getting into the boxing ring. O'Malley referred to as out WBA light-weight champion Gervonta Davis final yr."Suga" Sean can also be a star amongst youthful MMA followers. He has over 4 million followers on Instagram. With just one title protection, his callout of Topuria was just a little overzealous, however the concept wasn't outlandish.Zhang: Forward of UFC 300, Zhang Weili probably was first in line to get a shot at double champ standing. Then, at UFC 300, Zhang efficiently defended the strawweight title towards Yan Xianon within the co-main occasion, successful by unanimous resolution -- however it was a poor displaying for Zhang. After that efficiency, plainly successful that combat will not be sufficient to justify reserving her to face one other champ."One different factor to think about is the Grasso-Shevchenko logjam that is already going down on the high of the flyweight division, that's the solely logical division for her to problem," Anderson stated.Pereira: Along with his jaw-dropping knockout of Jamahal Hill in his gentle heavyweight title protection in the primary occasion, Pereira immediately elevated himself from star to famous person standing. In accordance with Cormier, Pereira might do one thing that might cement his legacy in MMA."Pereira has the potential to be a three-division champion if he strikes as much as heavyweight. That is by no means been performed within the UFC," Cormier stated. "His energy interprets so effectively. He has pure energy in his punches and leg kicks that does not go away as a result of he strikes in weight."Pereira additionally expressed curiosity in probably transferring as much as heavyweight. The one downside is that there is additionally a holdup atop the heavyweight division. Jones is anticipated to face Miocic when he returns from harm. And Tom Aspinall has the interim heavyweight title. One ultimate rule -- and that is nonnegotiable -- interim titles do not qualify for double champ standing. Read the full article

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day. It rained on Friday and I got wet! By the time I got to the school, my trousers were soaked and didn’t really dry out until about 1.00. Good thing I had a good day or I would’ve been pissed off! This week is the last lesson of term, then they’ll have to hand in their assignment. A few weeks off, mark assignments, then the April term begins and around we go! Many thanks to everyone that listened to the radio show. Abi Clarke was on before me and played some sublime tunes, as usual! Always good to inherit an audience! Executive producer Dawn Aurora Burnett did a sterling job. Lots of good feedback! She has a great voice and I suspect you’ll be hearing that voice again. If you missed the show, it’s up on Mixcloud. Next week’s executive producer is the succulent Sharon Louison. Got quite a busy week ahead. Not just calls with ex-students at 9.00 p.m. and foreign students at 9.00 a.m. but also some socialising and networking. Yes, get ready for more selfies! My team are playing well and got a second win in a week. Non-football fans will never understand this but, when your team win, the world is a better place and, when your team lose, we can be serious grouches! Saturday night: my timeline was so funny! People couldn’t believe how poor The Brits was! Big winner of the night was Raye and a massive slap in the chops for major labels. This girl was signed to Polydor Records (major label) and they refused to release a debut album. In truth, they thought she was a stupid little girl and they could dick around with her career. So, she criticised her label in an interview and they terminated her contract. She then went on to achieve No. 1 single and No. 1 album on her own independent label. The music industry is still too male-dominated, with old-fashioned values. Have a marvellous and momentous Monday. I love you all.

TST Old Notes Re: Echo's Origins
Ep 9 These Dark Battlements Ooooh boy do we have material! So, Echo first appeared sometime in spring, 2008. It was just radio interferences, singular words people in Wyoming could barely make out: Help! Listen! Alone! The traces led Anna to a certain cave. She went there with a ranger who waited for her outside, and they used walkie-talkie to communicate. Then Anna niticed she wasn't talking to the ranger anymore. Once the entity acquired a voice, it created a body as well - a carbon copy of the ranger. It walked out of the cave following Anna, and, well, the ranger was armed and freaked out. THAT copy was dealt with. But Anna lost her recorder in the caves. A lifetime worth of personal stories and musings. Echo didn't have to sweat too much to copy her, now. Also, this is the incident Anna mentioned in ep 1, that's why she talks about "just another cave". A year later, on April, 15, 2009, she asked her sister Kate to help her track and kill Echo who has been apparently following Anna (?). They failed, didn't even have a chance to encounter the entity (if that officer wasn't them).
All this gives plenty of grounds for some wild guesses. In autumn, 2018, Anna Sheridan has disappeared. If it wasn't her doppelganger, we also know she came to her literature agent to warn him that she's going to do so. She didn't explain anything other than the fact that it wasn't just another inspiration trip, or a writer's whim, or a trick. She was going to actually disappear for some time. Then there's a timey-wimey thing. Dr. Ren Park had an insight related to this right after meeting Anna, which is too much of a coincidence if you ask me. The result if that insightful night was a small black hole in the middle of the lab. Dr. Park went out of the lab, and when he closed the door, soon he heard something like a sigh, one a person might give, and everything went back to normal.
Then there's this whole Echo thing (who seemed to imprint on Anna for some reason or idk how to explain this intense interest in her specifically... unless my guess is correct); Anna's phone call (Echo didn't do it, they had no idea about it when Sam asked and at that point they had no reason to lie); Anna's only will found in her car together with her tapes, consisting of just one word, "Listen"; a girl who disappeared from the world entirely and possibly drown in a well, Amy Sterling (although her existence is still debatable); and, finally, a voice from underwater, asking every time: "What would you do to save yourself? What will you give? Who will you give?". These are all clearly connected. My hypothesis is that Anna somehow found a way to slip through the worlds, to exist in a different form, outside time and space. Why? Good question. Maybe to fix something - her life? Or a fate of a girl who doesn't exist anymore? Amy seems to hold a huge meaning to Anna, starting the whole doppelganger and weird water things. Or maybe Anna found out how Amy did that and repeated her way.
Anywho. I think Anna had a purpose and a plan in mind, this wasn't an abrupt decision. Knowing Anna, it most likely wasn't a well-thought plan, but she had an idea of what she was doing.
And hey, there's even an example of a being vaguely like this! The Echo! Echo is basically an energy field with a mind, which can also manipulate matter somehow. But why not go further? I think Echo may actually BE Anna, or a part of her, but amnesiac anyway. Why? Because it appeared in 2008. There were no signs of this entity before. Why would something this strange just appear out of nowhere? And the words it said - help, listen, alone. Go on and try to convince me this wasn't Anna. There was a moment in Santa Lucia mines. When Anna was trapped underground, she threw a small rock to check what's in front of her. This same rock hit her leg, coming from behind her back. There was a loop. I think she might have used this and Ren's research to do what she did. A phone call to Sam just confirms she became something like Echo, being able to interfere with the world only through a very limited number of ways. Why was Echo created? I don't know but suspect this has to do with Sam. He's closely tied to the underwater entity who makes deals asking everyone who's drowning 3 questions. Anna met it, too, more than once. I think she's setting things in motion starting from 2008 now that she can influence any time she wants, creating Echo to attract Sam into all this. Why not just going to him, talking and stuff? Well he's a sceptic, and if I were him, I wouldn't believe I was some weird hybrid thing, an idea of who a kid who drowned in a lake decades ago could become, unless I encountered some REALLY weird shit. And now Sam has to face it, he has no other choice. Maybe he can influence this underwater entity. He's kind of unique. This underwater entity can also manipulate time or dwells outside of it, by the way. Why? Because people who were found dead at Agate Shore, which brought its eventual demise, drowned. They were all found at the dried lake bed, with seawater in their lungs and in a body condition corresponding to drowned people. Were they suddenly transported back to the time when the lake was full?
Anna and Sam are both somehow related to that underwater entity. We know about Sam now, but why does Anna keep crossing her ways with it? Does the well from her elementary school have anything to do with it?
I wondered how the stars fit into all of this, the only element that kept being repeated but stayed out. Now I get it. It's not about the stars. It's about the time when there's no stars. Or, rather, being outside time. If you don't abide by it, you can see the Universe when all the stars are gone. That's how this all is connected, the two parts. Anna is time (or, rather, NO time) - stars. Sam is water. And they must be connected by the underwater entity existing outside time and space. I wonder what this is going to lead to... and if I guessed right at all.

EDITOR: I feel sure we are all guilty of being inconsiderate. Most of us have a conscious and have that nudge to apologize when we realize we could have handled something better. We need to remember we do not know anyone’s circumstances. Someone might be having the worse day of their life, and might need a kind word, instead of a rude remark or a blasting of the car horn. We need to do what the Bible teaches. Love puts the needs of others before our own. A lot of us say we are Christians. If we are, our actions need to show it….all the time. ..LRMartin

Jottings by Jeannie Jeannie's Report on Domestic Violence Conference Jeannie Barnwell
Back in 2012-13 -- during 6 months, one woman a month looked into the a face of a man she loved, and then he murdered her. That is why Oconee County gets bad marks for domestic violence. Ever since those freaky days, many smart people have been working to improve our domestic tranquility. Michael Cogdill, NBC reporter, served as keynote speaker. He was born to a lovely couple; however, his dad frequently morphed into a violent alcoholic, and his mama was co-dependent. (That means she covered up her bruises and never dealt with the situation that held lifelong trauma for her son). The speakers at our conference on March 9, shared stunning info about bullying and family violence. o The most deplorable Death Row Inmates reveal that during childhood they were EITHER evil bullies or their helpless victims. o SC is the only state that will not grant a divorce based on threatened verbal violence. -- No luck getting a divorce here until you've got broken bones & bruises! o SC has many more ANIMAL SHELTERS than shelters for adults and children needing escape from domestic violence. OKAY-- this is just too depressing. This is all the bad news I am going to tell you. NOW- You, yes YOU must be a paragon of civility. Don't be around others if you are acting selfish and scary. Miz Jeannie is counting on you to be kind, loving, happy and forgiving. Little kids are watching YOU. Be a sterling example of a grown up in Oconee! Civility- "treating others as you would wish to be treated, smiling, acknowledging other human beings. DO IT!" Much love, Miz Jeannie
Bored, Depressed, Lonely? Walk more. Let the sun shine on your face. Say hello to someone you meet or give an old friend a quick call. Get a pet. If you have a pet spend extra time with your pet. Send someone a note of encouragement. Write down your thoughts. Help someone in need. Sometimes you will find many people much worse than you, then you will be able to see your own blessings. Thank God for your blessings. But if you need help immediately the crisis or suicide lifeline is to call 988. Seek until you find help.
Bradford Pears– Now is a great time to cut down those blooming invasive trees that take over our native hardwoods.
ASHTON RECALLS by Ashton Hester
Here's another interesting DAR School story. I will send it in installments over the next few weeks. DAR SCHOOL STUDENT FROM 1942-1946 RECALLS EXPERIENCES -(Introduction: In 2011 a local lady, Mrs. Pauline Kelley Cannon, graciously offered the Keowee Courier the opportunity to print a lengthy memoir she had written about her childhood experiences as a member of a sharecropping family in upper Oconee County and then as a resident student at Tamassee DAR School. It occurred to me that the DAR School memoir would especially be interesting to readers of The Old Salem Post, so I will send it in a series of installments during the coming weeks. Maggie, who is referred to, was Pauline's sister, and Mrs. Kirksey was a social worker who had arranged for the sisters to enter the DAR School. Sadly, Mrs. Cannon died a few years ago). . .This story covers from when I entered Tamassee DAR School in the fall of 1942, when I was 13, until I graduated in the spring of 1946 when I was 16. . .When the decision was made to enroll Maggie and me in Tamassee DAR School, Dad went to Walhalla and purchased a footlocker for us to carry our clothes in. He could not afford to buy each of us a separate one. . .Dad and Mrs. Kirksey carried us to the school. We went to Mr. Cain's office and he took us to the South Carolina building and introduced us to the house mother, Mrs. Allie Crouch. We went upstairs to a room with four beds and met our roommates, Mary Jane and Juanita Rholetter, who were from Brasstown near Westminster. Mary Jane didn't stay very long but Juanita stayed two years, and she and I became good friends. They also had a brother, Glenn, but he didn't stay very long... CONTINUED NEXT WEEK.
