Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): i didnt realize how little there was of serizawa in the manga or the anime .. i feel like he had more when i first read it ???? anyway he should be there more .

Favourite friendship: i think mob and reigen are fun as friends :) especially as they grow older, i think the dynamic would be fun. also teru and ritsu are fun when theyre together. worlds most dramatic 12 year olds.

How I feel about this character: I like her !!! i feel like shes not talked about much outside of ships which is a shame because i feel like if people came together on her character (this includes people writing canon) then there could be a compelling character here that wouldnt deny her roots or just stay the same sort of trope she used to be. I cant deny i do enjoy that they occassionally dip into her little interest in tarot :) its nice to see that trait remembered.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: sonic of course, shadow, blaze a bit?, metal sonic anddd... yea thats it

My non-romantic OTP for this character: i think her with silver or knuckles is always fun :) idk why i think its because they bounce off of each other well. equal levels of no braincells happening here at least with silver. and with knuckles i feel like they could have a fun brother sister dynamic.

My unpopular opinion about this character: what is the popular opinion on her .... idk ill just use this as more of me talking about her character in general. i wish people would use her abandonment issues more, or at least like integrate that into her character since i think its a trait that shows up a bit in the little visual novel and in sonic frontiers and i think that makes sense as a trait for her

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: if she was ever playable again . I HAVENT played the sonic frontiers dlc but i think giving her a little spin off game ala the princess peach games would be fun. maybe then her team from sonic heros can be used again and i could like care about big and cream outside of them being sparingly used in canon .. and big not just being a joke ... also i just want more development for herrr im always begging for development or character in this series i know its for children but plsss also i wish they would like actually like .. fully deal with her whole thing with sonic... it feels like they wanna pretend her obsession just never happened and wasnt like the main thing with her character before they basically turned her into sally acorn.

So like when most people aren't really invested in their bond being anything else because "well carmen said-" and take her at her word i get it.

And it is a part of how she used to think about him back then.

Mostly though? Because its usually being used to shut down potentially romantic red crackle? Mildly Annoying.

Because "like" doesn't make actually him her brother. (Idk if you were here at the beginning but its was..hmpppf)

both times its an acknowledgment that its a past dynamic .

HE IS NOT LOOKING AT HER AS A POTENTIAL KINDA SISTER.

And dynamics ...change. she literally also says right after. The first brother quote " until that moment" because she doesn't actually know him as well as she thought if he almost crossed a line she hates. So on that train it really is kinda set back to for old friendships sake.

And the the second quote is right before she looks at him. Who she knows is romantically interested in her. Waiting to date her and sees that as a a do over and second chance.

"OK maybe shes gonna convince him they'd make better platonic friends on the date"

Except the next time she does make it across to the table she FLIRTS with him back and says she's sorry she stood him up...um she knows it was a date date. And acted as such.

Shes not acting closed to the idea of gray acting more flirtatious with her . Or making her banter a little flirty back.

:p I'm not gonna pretend carmen is all settled in this potential do over but thats more because shes asked to sacrifice it for what is safe or right. Its kinda her thing as a hero.

And narratively speaking i would find it kind of lame if carmens perception didn't change in the slightest if what almost tempted her down the street wasn't even the slightest tempting to her

Because at the very least the dynamic shes reclaiming involved her being protective, more actively going after him when she can. Asking for a more equal friendship of protect and protected from both sides. Both professional thieves. Both good guys remember. And an understanding that they can't completely go back to the original dynamic because carmen just does not believe in evil ☆ and gray uhhhh thinks shes hot now.

They still have a ways to go (messes ♡) but their dynamic is changing bit by bit via adopting small revisions in how they see each other

What they end up with is still striving for at least a (flirty) friendship again, not really sorta siblings. Even if they end up having to settle for person I care enough to give up to protect

Carmen is just as likely to refer to him as classmate and friend instead.

tony stark, daniel jackson, and yelena belova. i may not be a genius, billionaire, playboy, or philanthropist but i am sarcastic, have anxiety, and self sacrificing sooo. i love history, occasionally wear my glasses, and like to argue with authority. i was raised from birth to be an assassin- wait no. i just love yelena, my personality and hers overlap so much i could sue marvel for not giving me credit.

R: are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

book author wise, i consider rick riordan to be a heavy influence bc i love his books and how his narration is personal to the point you actually feel like you know his characters like you would a best friend. also, claire legrand. the empirium trilogy was beautiful and the world building was just…wow. i hope that one day i’ll be able to write a book like how she wrote hers bc every page of those books felt like i had traveled to another world. fanfic author wise, i try not to let writers on here influence my style bc i feel like i’m stealing from them but the three authors that I distinctly remember reading a fic of theirs (the very first fics i read when i first got tumblr) are @beautifulbows924 @zafirosreverie and @the-scarlet-witch-22 . i have so many favorite writers on here, many of which are my mutuals, but i have a very vivid memory from each of these writers in which i felt like i was reading a novel while reading their works. i also hope that my fics will one day be as amazing as theirs bc they’re amazing.

best friends-to-lovers. i absolutely abhor that trope (unless it’s percabeth). that weird thing where two characters think they’re related after being together but they still love each other so it’s forbidden (i’m looking at you cassandra clare, love ya, but what the heck) sparkly vampires, the whole debate over whether or not the MC should end up with the good or bad boy but the good boy is always a childhood friend and the bad boy rides a motorcycle, wears a leather jacket, and says occasionally problematic things. and of course the MC ends up with the bad boy bc he has black hair and blue eyes (this is in no way an insult towards alec lightwood, he is my son)

i couldn’t really think of that many tropes so if there’s one you want to know my opinion about, send it in and i’ll tell you!!

didnt know you could do this, but yeah this is accurate. i don't like over tagging fics because i think that's what author notes are for--to like make funny jokes and shit, and i will honestly not read a fic if i cant parse through the tags. over tagging just bogs shit down and doesn't tell me the necessary pieces of the fic like genre and tropes used, characters and ships so i dont have a LOT of tags i use so it's not like hard to say that this is accurate. honestly i think the most surprising thing to me is that politics and slow burn don't have more fics tagged with them. but i also know i have a LOT of fics that i've only posted like one chapter of so far, so im sure that'll change whenever i get around to working on those projects again

3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

ugh my brain. see if i can think this through.... well i definitely tend to gravitate towards politics and intense emotional conflict. there was a phrase id noticed i tend to use a lot but now i just.. do not remember it.... i wish i could remember cause i had literally been like 'oh this is def one of those things that comes up in fic asks a lot' but for the life of me i dont know now what it was... maybe like comparing gaara's eyes to sea foam and sea glass... but no that's obvious. damn of course i ask for questions and i cant even get my brain to cooperate so i can answer.

uhhhh it was something i pinged on in RtS i think? just this phrase i know i use a lot...

well i cant think of the thing id hit on this week specifically so i guess when it comes to like tropes or details or like metaphors i reuse i def go for lots of things with the heart. big fan of heart metaphors for sure. love to infuse a slight horror vibe into a completely non-horror fic. i think there's a lot of really easy to pick things that i tend to lean into in my fics like obviously worldbuilding is a big thing for me, and i love a plot heavy story around politics. big fan of themes of guilt and forgiveness, death/loss and grief, and i know i tend to revisit a lot of these themes in fics.

generally speaking, i prefer canon set fics but im not averse to an AU if it's done well and i will always be a sucker for a coffee shop AU. i know thats probably super boring and basic, and maybe silly since i worked as a barista for over a decade (well sorta, between quarantine and medical leave there was a lot of time i wasn't actively working, but still)... but yeah i am a sucker for a coffee shop AU always (but god help the person who writes one that isn't accurate to actually working in a coffee shop)

Gender Headcanon: trans guy who is SO gnc. I've always seen him as being so open and proud about his sexuality and gender but its like. DOUBLY so for his gender he's just so unapologetic about being transgender and being trans and his own way and he's going to make sure the world knows it

A ship I have with said character: s/nkn/xadow admittedly. All three dynamics really appeal to me and have so much going for them when it comes to parallels and opposites and also just being silly and fun. but only the dynamics in my head and in canon literally everyone is wrong about the s/nadow dynamic because they want to make both characters into flat fanfiction tropes and want to make it out to be more special than it is and theyre just so generally annoying about it that it comes off like i hate it but really im just really picky and hate the fandom version of it. i think they are silly. s/nknux (NOT THE MOVIE VERSION) however is the world though it is that deep. if I talk about them in depth though this post is going to get so long so ill leave it at that. but also shipping isn't that serious. unrelated to actually shipping but i hc that most of his friends and rivals (THAT ARE CLOSE TO HIS AGE) have had crushes on sonic at some point i think its really silly to the point of being a bit. everyone sitting at a table like raise your hand if youve crushed on sonic at some point and all these hands go up and sonic like "uh. did i do that."

A random headcanon: OOOOO well I know sonic being an orphan is pretty much canon but i have to say i just LOVE the idea of sonic being an orphan and VERY much an outcast growing up (something something tails parallels). he ran away from whoever was raising him (and probably raising other orphans) at a pretty young age and his powers didn't make it hard to avoid other adults and stuff like school and stuff. anyways long story short he pretty much didnt have anything except for what he stole and pulled together for himself-- he gave himself his own name (transgender) and everything. I'm just a big sucker for heroes who have the craziest powers and have become the most powerful people around but come from the most humble origins and at the end of the day they're just another person like us.

General Opinion over said character: HE'S MY BEST FRIEND!!! He's EVERYONES best friend like i promise you if sonic was real he would be your friend and make you feel special and awesome because he is so nice and friendly. god i wish sonic was real the world needs a sonic so bad

Try not to literally tell your viewer/reader that "this person is strange and different meaning this person is creepy and i dont wanna be around them" which i felt was sorta the goal with korekiyo (SORRY FOR USING DANGANRONPA EXAMPLES BUT ITS THE BEST I GOT OK)

Intrusive thoughts. Many people can have them sure but ive never met a psychotic person who didnt have intrusive thoughts. Think of things like. Stabbing someone. Randomly pushing or punching someone. Hitting someone with a chair. Kissing or even having sex with someone. (Literally anyone. Ive. Literally had intrusive thoughts about having sex with teachers. Not even attractive teachers or anything just. Normal people.) HOWEVER keep in mind... we dont usually ACT on these. Its not like "o i had a thought about stabbing my brother im gonna dtab my brother now".

PROBLEMS SLEEPING!!!! Because of reasons like. Thinking about the future or an idealized version of the future, thinking about what the Real World would be like once i leave this fake world. Or because the walls are breathing (why do they do that lmao?) Or some random hallucination decides to talk to you out of nowhere. Stuff like that.

Nothing feeling real. Life is a simulation and nothing matters anyway. Everyone in this world is not even really a person. Theyre just computer generated to make me believe its the real world but i know its not. Everything revolves around me this world is built around me. Everything that happened before i was here is just made up and never actually happened. Or at least it didnt matter. Im the main character in this video game.

Auditory hallucinations!! Theyre the worst tbh. Screaming, random crying, mean laughter (why is it never anything fun ughhhh). Usually, i try to ignore auditory hallucinations by listening to music with my earplugs in.

Chapter 1:

Ok back to second person! And we’re nine months pre-murder.

Is the sword actually burning or is this psychosomatic? She doesn't flinch when she pierces her hand to make the bone glove so maybe?

The muscle memory from Gideon seems to be gone. Maybe Harrow's traumatized? Understandably so tbh. And she's lowkey suicidal. Mood. Ok yeah this feels more like shock than anything supernatural. The events of Canaan House, becoming a Lyctor, being on a spaceship hospital, and unable to properly paint a skull mask... Poor Harrow.

Ok yeah being a Lyctor sounds fucking terrifying. Being aware at all times of everything around you... what a sensory nightmare.

Damn okay, Harrows being visited by the Body. Now I'm wondering if it is just a hallucination or if its something more. A part of Harrow seems to think its the latter...

"Red, and wet, and ill defined." Oh god Harrow what did you do.

Chapter 2

Knocking and waiting for permission before entering being a true sign of Divinity is sad and hilarious.

Harrow has a point. Why would necromancer demigods need swords? On the other hand, swords fuck, so.

I do wonder what life is like for the average person on Erebos. I was half thinking it was literally just the emperor and the lyctors in the First House.

Oh my god God is ghosting one of the Lyctors. "Make static noises". Slacker God is a rare character archetype but it's always so fucking funny.

And Harrow can raise eighteen thousand dead? Or is he talking about himself? Hmm...

Well thats a pretty smart way of carrying a greatsword when actually touching it makes you violently ill.

So it is trauma? I guess that explains everything being in second person; it adds a layer of depersonalization to the narration.

Yooo cryosleep! Part of me is wondering if these weren’t actually people alive 10,000 years ago who were resurrected, but frozen zygotes that have been artificially aged into people? IDK.

Wait, the black casket with the rose, that has Cyntherea’s body, but it’s decorated like a Ninth house? Or has Harrow already switched to thinking of herself as First House, and black is the color for both the First and Ninth Houses? 

“You wanted to be relieved, but no longer recalled how that worked, glandularly speaking.” I really don’t think there’s something supernatural going on here, but. I once read someone’s worldbuilding notes on how liches worked in their D&D game, and it boiled down to liches are immortal, but all bodily functions have to be manually done. Swallowing, breathing, heart beating, cell division all had to be done manually. Their mind expanded to allow for that, but eventually all liches slip up and their body starts to fall apart. Anyway. That’s not what’s happening here, but I was reminded of it.

I want to see fanart of the Emperor, or at least his eyes, because I just cannot picture it. All I can picture is just oily black/rainbow eyes. I had this same problem reading the Lightbringer series. I do not know how eyeball anatomy works.

Bro what do you mean the cost is too great. Crackpot theory: there’s some kind of like thanergy pressure difference? And if the Emperor actually steps foot on one of the planets, the Resurrection is undone and everyone suddenly dies.

Of course he doesn’t know how to hug. Gods Who Are Fully Aware They Are Bastards is another rare, favorite trope of mine.

Okay this is a lot of science words but I’m following so far. Okay, so only humans have souls... Okay, I remember reading this in the guide at the end of Gideon the Ninth. It is really weird that planets in the Dominicus system have both death energy and life energy, for reasons I couldn’t quite put my finger on. But, planets have souls, apparently! Cool!

Being pissed that another major that you always thought was stupid would have covered this a lot earlier than you is kinda relatable lmao.

Okay, I can see where this is going, but there’s a wider scale story we’re only getting pieces of here. Necromancy and thanergy are like viruses that slowly kill a planet, literally. And the entire population has to be relocated, presumably to a new infected planet. Late stage necromancy capitalism.

Also, the Body moving Harrow’s arms for her is strikingly similar to her hallucination of Gideon at the end of the last book... 

OKAY COOL. PLANET SIZED GHOSTS. RESSURECTION BEASTS. UNDERSTOOD. 

GOD IS CRYING.

THEY EAT PLANETS.

LYCTORS HAVE DIED DISTRACTING THEM.

FUCK.

Okay. 3 are left. There were 9. 5 were defeated? And those were... Two, Eight, and Six. I’m with Harrow. The math does not check out.

Oh, okay, they automatically home in on the Emperor and Lyctors no matter where they are. Cool. Understood.

Uhhhh what the fuck? So the Body has Gideon’s eyes now. That’s not good. Okay she’s talking to it now and it’s responding. “I am half a Lyctor?” “Ortus did not die for nothing?” Excuse me?

Ooooh. Okay. I think I know what’s going on. Harrow is trying to completely erase Gideon from her mind. That’s why the Emperor’s mouth ‘looked strange’ when he said Ortus. That’s why she doesn’t have the muscle memory she should have gotten from Gideon.

Poor Harrow.

EDIT: Oh my god I'm an idiot. This totally recontextualizes the Parados chapter. It might just be Harrows perspective of that chapter in the library with Gideon, but with Gideon forcibly redacted and replaced with Ortus... that would explain why the Body said it didn't happen this way.... I've connected the two dots....

EDIT THE SECOND: thinking more about the Resurrection Beasts. The Emperor said there have been other, smaller ones besides the original 9. Perhaps created during the Cohorts campaign when they converted a planet to thanergy too fast? Second, the prologue showed Harrow and other necromancers astral projecting into the River to fight one. So, maybe over the course of the book a way to kill the Resurrection Beasts is discovered? That or they're distracting it? Third, the Emperor apparently also did the Lyctor ritual, or something close to it, to attract the Resurrection Beasts. Fourth, I was kinda right! It was a side effect of the Resurrection that prevents the Emperor from returning to the Dominicus system, and it would call all the inhabitants to die. It just wouldn't be suddenly. Hopefully.

What’s the fic you’re most proud of? - oh EASILY my time travel fic. its more than 10k words which like....okay don’t get me wrong back in the day when i used to write literally just for myself i definitely had something that was uhhhh over 300 pages. Like...pencil and paper 300 pages so it was a lot. However! When I started like...actually publishing and writing I was like “oh man just getting to 2k words is tough idk how people get to 5k or 10k” especially since like...idk writing and reading is quite hard for me! What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received? - i mean shoot, any comment is nice! sincerely any length of comment or people saying their favorite parts will get me. i think the best is when someone will say “oh i saw this and thought of your fic!” or “oh i bookmarked it!” Those are definitely two things that i’m like wait??? you liked it you thought of it more than just reading it?? which means a lot to me.

my hcs on this have wobbled over time but overall i imagine dan, char and miles are all like, fairly, neat. tho they all have a tendency to leave papers around

and miles doesn’t make the bed as much. cuz imagining miles napping in rumpled quilts is a very cute mental image. hair disheveled

i think a good term for whats going on with dan and char is Organized Chaos. they’re both scientists (and a musician) for heck’s sake. it doesn’t look like they know what they’re doing but they do. but ur not gonna walk into their house(s) and be like “ugh gross what the fuck”. it’s nice. dan tends to make the bed

and i imagine dan keeps The Rat Room (yes, you heard me) immaculate because you reeeeeeally want that area to be well cared for

as for personal, lets get this out of the way, none of them are yucky. but dan is showering the least, just due to absent mindedness and hyperfixation. like ya really get into a project and then suddenly oh fuck i need a shower. but thats relative. he’s not a stinky gross boy. i imagine miles washes the most because like, he has body piercings and those GOTTA be cleaned every day, especially the downstairs one. miles values his dick, he don’t want an infection

also its amazing how much more you shower/bathe when you have a partner. or in this case, two partners. in general and for sexy purposes. hell yeah

Eating habits and sample daily menu

its odd how often i’ve pictured these people eating together

dan: eats the least (and for once that isn’t a skinny joke, he could eat cake every day and he’d still be like that) because for the most part he doesn’t have much of an appetite. he eats what he needs, with random bursts of being really hungry (it’s a neurodivergent thing). i imagine he has a extra fondness for pasta and can put a surprising amount of it away when he wants to. tho typically for ease, he’ll stick to noodles. he takes his coffee mild and decaf. i hc him as a vegetarian due to not being able to process meat. his body also cannot handle alcohol and the one time he tried it he needed to be hospitalized. his ice cream preference is vanilla with chocolate sprinkles. or honeycomb. favourite vegetable is capsicum (which he’d call a bell pepper because he’s american), favourite fruit is pineapple. on that note he likes pineapple pizza. overall he eats simple but isn’t against trying new things. he has a very neutral disposition towards food

char: of the trio, i define charlotte as the Loud Passionate One so obviously being a big eater goes with that, likes a big breakfast (eggs, sausages, sometimes french toast!), sometimes skips lunch when she’s working at the museum due to focus, has a ravenous sweet tooth (i haven’t been subtle that i’ve made her ADORE chocolate but in general i see her liking sweet things), she can handle eating less tho because she’s gone on plenty of expeditions and such. so i think she eats a lot under normal circumstances because, like, she can. i don’t think i need to tell you what her ice cream or starbucks preferences are, do i? takes her coffee with three sugars, two coffees and creamy. likes mochas and hot chocolates too. with marshmallows. naturally, her fave kind of chocolate is galaxy because she is an English Woman. another fave of hers is cadbury’s creme eggs. but lest you think Good Lord Sapphire This Woman’s Entire Body Is A Sugar Molecule, don’t worry she does eat well. like veggies, fruits, meats, she’s fine. of meats, she has a fondness for fish (i have no further information, im terrible with fish. but she’s a pom, so...). favourite fruit is pear, favourite vegetable is peas. likes a bacardi, or rum and coke

miles: he eats a “normal” amount but he’s a grazer. which means, not so much Set Meal eating than eating/snacking thru out the day. he takes his coffee black, no surprise, but with sugar! see, its a metaphor. for him. likes fried eggs and hash browns. his fave food is very cheap mac and cheese. i think in general he really likes cheese. he doesn’t have complicated tastes, like, he grew up poor. he likes seafood (in particular fish tacos) but not lobster as he discovered when he got cashed up. he likes salty food but likes sweets too, in particular i can imagine him snacking on m&ms, skittles, gummi bears. little things. doesn’t have a fave vegetable because he doesn’t care enough, to him veggies are things to eat so you won’t die. doesn’t hate him but isn’t excited to eat ‘em. fave ice cream is mint choc. he’ll drink whatever (except for vodka) but is used to beer. thinks pineapple on pizza is an abomination, espech since he really likes pizza otherwise. i consider him a food opportunist, like, oh theres food here? yoink. or like, oh hey, if everybody else is eating, i’ll have whatever’s going on

- reading (really depends on how you define Wasting Time). also he composes music and when he was alive, that was considered wasting time (ugh)

- sometimes even just doing hobbies or work or whatever, even then, he tends to have this feeling of never doing enough due to his Perfectly Healthy And Supportive Upbringing [seethes] so uhhhh basically, anxiety? like this was a dude raised to think anything other than his work was a waste of time. it didn’t exactly work but a decent amount of that Pressure has to still sit with him

in limboverse There Is No Mystery but she still has her great job(s), that is she works at a museum and i think she goes on expeditions sometimes. so theres that, she’s got the great career. really, her Plan for the future in this world is live the live she couldn’t before. she (and dan!) died young so they’re gonna like, actively adore each other and get married and have kids. and also miles is there. ha, that sounded so rude. she loves miles too. (besties/fuck buddies turned Hey You Wanna Join Me And Dan’s Relationship and miles like... yeah sure)

dan: didn’t grow up believing in magic and such (which is super ironic because his mother is a fucking other) but he has a very open mind. i think he’ll believe it if he’s thrust into the situation. it’s interesting really, dan is known as the science guy and that's great but he’s super fucking accepting of not science shit. tho of course, he’s not seeing the island time travel as magic but science. but more importantly, he regards miles’ powers with zero doubt or questioning. he doesn’t even seem confused, he is absolutely on board with miles being able to talk to dead people. this all implies miles told him off screen and dan believes him

so basically he’ll accept whatever is presented to him as true

which honestly, is what a good scientist is like. the trope of the scientist character who is ultra non believing of the supernatural, even when they’re seeing it before their eyes, is annoying. like, you know the ones? the ones who get angry about it. the overly skeptical scientist. hate that. dan is not that

and his character arc includes embracing free will over destiny so there's that

char: she’s not superstitious and doesn’t believe in magic or the supernatural at all. tho thrown into bizarre situations she’s like ???? but has to accept it. and she KNOWS something is up with the island. she knows its different. i just mean, under normal circumstances she’d regard magic stuff as funny nonsense. i hc that char, in living life, doesn’t believe miles can speak to the dead. really fucking weird this isn’t addressed in the show but hahaaaa they wasted char! anyways and like, if presented with the concept that dan’s brain damage is being healed by the island, she’d look confused, say thats impossible but she’d think on it

actually it’s funny. miles has magic powers but he’s 0% superstitious and i imagine outside of his own powers, he really doesn’t believe in the occult. i hc that until he personally proved otherwise, he grew up thinking he was mentally ill. and once he realised it was true, thought he was some kind of freak

and he’s incredulous when he finds out hurley has powers too. tho miles, being miles, does roll with the punches a lot in the show, he’s skeptical when it comes to hurley's power. and i find that interesting. also i fucking love how when hurley describes his power, miles says “thats not how it works”, like ???? babe???

but overall his attitude on the island is like “well. this is happening”

i do think thru his life, despite his power, he doesn’t believe in All Magic or occult or whatever. i also hc that he attracted those kind of people who are REALLY into astrology and auras and stuff like that and he found them exasperating. (i think he’d be a lot more okay with it if it was claire who was talking about astrology and palm reading with him. he’d be endeared when its her)

and i think he thinks other psychics he’s met or seen on tv are straight up bullshit. he can believe he has it but he’s skeptical of other people. just assumes they’re scammers. hell, he was a scammer. who just happened to have the power. he was like “well i have this, i may as well get some use outta it”

oh and in limboverse, they all kinda have to accept their situation. and they take it with ease due to appreciating getting happier lives

How do they express love?

a dan who loves you will pet your face and look at you like ur his entire reason to live. a char who loves you will squeak at your jokes and will never once let you feel bad about yourself. a miles who loves you is sorry he isn’t better at this stuff but he really is trying... sure we can cuddle if you wanna, that’s cool v///v

the dan and char we saw in the show was them holding back and i find that very amusing because they were HEART EYES AS FUCK for each other and so affectionate and so soft hearted, like oh my gosh. canon show dan/char is them when they’re pining... when they’re not even a couple (yet, damn it)

dan is more open about the love than char, seeing as he said it. and double downed on it. char i feel was holding back for different reasons than dan. dan was holding back (fucking barely) because of eloise’s Love Will Only Bring Pain upbringing, which’d give somebody a serious complex. so he was adverse to actually pursuing a relationship AND i figure he thought “she wouldn’t wanna be with me anyways”. but char i imagine, a deep seated insecurity and need to be defensive, but also! dan was like REALLY mentally unwell before the island. and that's the dan that char knows (and loves) but she’d feel guilty if she pursued anything with him. like she’s taking advantage of a brain damaged person

as for miles, how does he express love? Not Well. at first

whoever is the first person he fell in love with (i imagine richard), he was not good at... being open about that. i don’t think miles is good with love. lived his life pretty detached/bitter about the concept, which i imagine is due to having cynicism about life and death. everybody you love is gonna die, so why bother? (his mom dying hit him pretty hard) so uhhh its gonna be... baby steps

slowly becoming more open about liking somebody, becoming more affectionate, more... uh, couple-y (and later throuple-y). it’d take time and he will always be miles, but hey, he gets there. he’ll still always have his snark but he won’t be a Genuine Asshole to people he loves. heck, i imagine he’ll be downright soft in the right situation. and he can be gentle and kind. he’s a salty boy not a cunt

but i digress. basically he’s a little “yeah, yeah, i love you too, shut up” about it but he does have that soft gooey center. basically those who know him, and love him, know his true heart. it’s just a part of being miles “defensive walls” straume

i actually cant believe that i love every single fking character in this bitchofa city. 300 fox way is such a fun and exciting place in my mind, i imagine the house to be at least 3 stories tall and really mitch-matched and standing out gorgeously from a row of suburban houses next to it.... good god!!!! i adore the communal bohemian feeling from the housing situation with the psychics . !!!! imo the house is just always full of random acquaintances (maybe this was proven a fact in some book? that theres a fuckton of people who just never get names or anything like that?) and i LOVE THAT IMAGE. the whole house is just. this story made me really emotional about the world and youth and friendships and buhwuhhuhwbuh. it felt really real to me, ignoring all the otherworldly, obviously. like i cant begin to describe how earnestly i would love to live in a world with the main characters, im suddenly 13 again and its cool to say that youd like to live in some fictional world of your choosing, i choose this and maybe regret it once the devil fking stings me to death

Blue was such an excellent character bc she really made me feel Everything. at points it was kinship and at others it was frustration and next thing i know shes talking about wanting SOMETHING MORE and im just buggy-eyed like EXCUSE ME, knock next time you come snooping around in my brain will ya???? and like i get the whole “im not magical but everyone around me is” -trope. its a good fine trope but dang dang goddang during the first books it kinda irked me,,,, and then !! and then shes talking about all sorts of important things and shes so smart and shes so fun and i adore my lil sister so much and im so fking happy for her........ i put it this way at some point during the raven king: “IDK if im super projecting on Blue or feel super distanced to/from her but something about her characters makes me feel Everything at once. “

jealousy and longing were emotions i didnt expect to feel with this scifi-YA- series, if im being honest. guess its a compilation of a shitton of things, mostly like. Feeling inept with my abilities as a “creative” and reading this story that sounds gorgeous, paints gorgeous images, has gorgeous characters and makes my brain feel gorgeously magical -- and not being able to produce anything “worthy” of my own. its sort of “disheartening” to me, as a Youth(tm), to see how well people in their 30s can manage to navigate through this minefield of 16-18 year olds, when I, a 19 year old, cant really pull it off :--( suppose its just. i cant believe how important mr gray and maura became to me. het rights i love my parents. oh this is ?? kind of a tough one bc i feel like i never Branched out in my spaces when it comes 2 being productive,, like a lot of my work is done in my bedroom just bc my desk is there and it’s the most convenient,,,, honestly im jus gonna say my favorite place to write would be from . my desk . bc it faces the window :-)

since i only have wtsf confidently worked out ,, i’ll use those ocs !! but i think , quite Honestlie ,,, that wendy is my favorite character !! im rly in love with how she progresses as a person nd also she’s jsut . she gets it u know .

I TALKED ABT THIS BEFORE but b/ts’ hyyh series, my neighborhood, spring day by b/ts are a few inspirations for wtsf !!!

my dad got me hooked on reading when i was really really young !! and being able to read abt all these huge worlds nd being given an opportunity 2 fall in love w them rly inspired me to want to write worlds of my own . plus , i watch a lot of different shows nd animes that feed into my daydreams nd sometimes im like ‘yo,,, that was a good daydream,,,,, time 2 story it’ .

oKAY SO im gonna try to not make this too long SJKHJGS !! wendy is a very like . prickly character . shes like a cactus . nd she’s not too fond of letting ppl get close, but the ppl who do manage to get close to her are happie 2 learn she would actually die for them . loyalty is a Huge Huge part of her character, and she cares very deeply abt the people she calls family . shes also v sarcastic nd like . ‘open ur eyes dummy’ .

arthur is a kind of person who lives heavily on false pretenses . like he projects this image bc its an image that he can control nd he jsut Rolls w it , but hes actually someone who likes 2 tease his friends nd be friendly to them ,, hes got Issuez nd is very much the type of person to be like ‘o lol im ok :-)...’ nd prioritize the needs of others 

rafael is , in all honesty , just babey . he studied a lot during high school nd rly pushed himself beyond his limits bc he wants to be able 2 go 2 a good college on scholarship nd get a job 2 support his family , nd hes just ?? very responsible nd sweet but that can also manifest into him taking on more than he should nd burning out .

People talk a lot about how HxH is a deconstruction of shonen anime, and like, for a long time, that’s the word I’ve been using too. I watched a youtube video that made me reconsider, and it got me thinking about this. (tho you dont need to watch it before reading this, i disagreed or had slightly differing opinions about slight things anyway)

On the whole, Hunter x Hunter does have the standard themes and tropes of shonen. The optimism, the growth, love, friendship, hardship, adversity, often loss and tragedy and overcoming it, that stuff... but what sets it apart is how it explores and examines the way those themes are handled in shonen. When HxH deals with the standard tropes of shonen, it often deconstructs.... but the series is not overall a “deconstruction”.

It digs into and subverts and often breaks things down... it deconstructs a trope and peers into its guts, only to build it back up a little. Is it a “reconstruction”? I don’t know lmao, that’s nothing haha. Even though a lot of the time, you’ll be watching it and things will happen that make you go “wow, I kind of can’t believe this is happening in a shonen battle anime...”, so yeah, it does feel different than you’d expect it to feel, but at the same time... it’s pretty distinctively still a shonen feeling. I think Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a proper deconstruction cause none of the shit in that series would fly in a regular magical girl anime, I think (uhhhh maybe. im not well versed, maybe it would, idk), and so when things spin off in that darker direction and are direct counters to tropes found in the magical girl genre, thats a deconstruction. It saw the original tropes, picked out what made them work, did the opposite, and made that work. But that’s not really what HxH does. If that was the case, Gon might face a villain and outright lose, and never recover. Or, circumstances will develop that portray the protagonist as very clearly the villain of this story. In that way, I guess you could say Death Note is kind of deconstructionist. It’s essentially a shonen battle manga/anime with psychological battles instead of physical ones, and the main character is undeniably the villain, and he only gets worse with time. HxH doesn’t usually completely deconstruct or subvert a trope, so much as it more fully explores those tropes, and has to play with deconstructing them a little bit to do so.

Here’s an example of what I mean. Take for instance, “Knov has to go in and plant teleport portal things in the king’s palace. He manages to do it, but is discouraged when he sees Pouf’s aura”. That could happen in Naruto. What HxH does differently is peer into the workings of that scenario, and thinks about what would actually happen there. It shows Knov’s panic attack, his mental state. This is maybe more of a deconstruction, because even though Knov succeeds, he is overwhelmed, and his confidence is shattered. He withdraws from the rest of the mission, at least for the time being. He is noticeably scarred by this event forever afterwards. Other shonen wouldn’t delve that deep into the implications of the actions characters take.

But then take for instance Gon’s Anime Power Up versus Pitou…. “young kid ages up because of magic to a point at which he can beat the opponent, but risks losing his nen and possibly his life”. That could happen in Dragon Ball Z (in fact dbz wrote the book on this trope). But it differs in the tone set, the way it was handled, the sheer emotional weight of every word spoken in that episode, the terror Killua has once he finds Gon, etc. This is a bit of deconstruction, in that it has this power up be an unequivocally bad thing that could end Gon’s life and shakes Killua to his core, but in the end, some of the “construction” is build back up, because Killua’s calling out to Gon saves him, and the bond of friendship (AND LOVE) that these two share brings Gon back from the brink. It was, of course, a little too late, and Gon is essentially, for all intents and purposes, dead from this point on, and the only thing that could save him was something that breaks all the rules of the universe up to this point, and is possibly a power originating in the Dark Continent, which is mysterious and ancient and seemingly full of unexplained phenomena. So, Gon is saved, lessons are learned... Things were still awkward for Gon and Killua even after Gon apologized but... in the end they still care a lot about each other. That’s not very deconstructionist... that’s awfully shonen, actually. But the level of detail HxH goes to to break from formula and show in depth what the characters think and feel is really nonstandard.

Conceivably, characters could be feeling these emotions in other shonen when these things happen, but it’s not explored in them. I bet when an anime character has a big “I’m risking my life to attain ultimate power!” moment, it could really traumatize the friends of that character... but that’s rarely something explored in any other canon of a show in this genre. And that’s the thing about HxH. It’s not so much a full, dark, terrifying deconstruction of shonen tropes, it’s an examination of them. If it was a deconstruction through and through, Powered Up Gon might have died there, or hurt Killua so bad that Killua leaves Gon forever, or he could have lost after it wasn’t enough to stop Pitou, or he could have used this power for evil and killed someone truly innocent, etc. HxH would never do any of those things. The moment of Gon’s transformation wasn’t done to emphasize how twisted the main character of a shonen could be, it was done to emphasize how much the people around Gon could love him, and how Gon was forgetting that. Gon withdrew, succumbed to grief, pushed the people he loves away. But no matter what, even after committing to this being the end of his life, Killua was there for him. Not pushed away. He saved Gon and in that moment reminded him that there are still things to live for and love to be experienced.

Hunter x Hunter arguably emphasizes the themes of love and friendship and optimism way better than standard shonen, rather than subverting those themes.

Long story short, I think Hunter x Hunter is basically Togashi flexing and saying “okay, I see what you all are going for, lemme show you how I’d do it” and fucking knocking it out of the park.

Its so good and so full of potential and angst and I LOVE IT!!!💞💞💞 The way you write Eodwulf is soooo good hes such a mess and so gay help him. and Astrid Omg... You've clearly put a lot of thought into them with the child designs and stuff, did you have any major inspo for the two of them like songs or other characters and stuff???

anyway!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH,,, ed ( @tactfulgrimalkin ) is the one doing the actual writing but we plan everything together and i edit and do artwork so he deserves lots of love for the great writing…i dont remember what else i had here before tumblr deleted it so i hope thats the gist of it

anyway you just opened pandora’s box and i’m very sorry for the length of the rest of this answer but here we go prepare for some cursed content necessary to answer that question ( | ) w ( | ) it was a Wild Ride getting these two characters to where they are boy howdy 

so the thing is in order to explain how we created these characters i actually have to get into the origins of the fic on the whole because the two are inextricably linked, and also, the origins of this fic are incredibly cursed and you can send all ur hatemail right here go on blast us we’re ready 

but we were talking about caleb and how we’re both excited for whenever astrid and eodwulf turn up, and the thought came up for basically the rough skeleton of that scene in chapter 2: 

“hey how messed up would it be if instead of them both hunting him down like we’re expecting…one of them comes in with a huge savior complex and sincerely thinks he’s delusional and should still be in the asylum, how MESSED UP would that be” 

…and then shortly after that, this happened

also that pic of caduceus didnt exist back then i went back and got this screenshot just to share the curse with you all

ANYWAY

in classic us format we got carried away and eodwulf got slotted into the role of that scene in chapter two and his character was largely developed around that scene, like, what kind of person would still be clinging to caleb after all this time to that degree to make that happen? and what was come up with was an extremely avoidant person clinging to a fantasy version of things wherein they don’t have to fight

(eodwulf was developed into a Person before astrid, i should note at this point, and ed did most of that developing; i took point on astrid later on)

but around this time i went “screw it im gonna do some concept art we’re both in too deep now” so here’s some of that for u guys 

started with them all as teens and did a couple sketches as well as one of baby (well. teen. so baby) caleb/bren/we were calling him felix at the time as some of u probably already know 

first draft had astrid with longer hair than eodwulf lmao check this out 

flipped the hair length on those two which was for the best because at the time we were imagining eodwulf as a bit more mischevious which is another thing that got reversed over time now astrids the prankster and eodwulfs the overworked mom friend because bren takes astrid’s ideas and makes them SO MUCH WORSE but he still looks better with longer hair and then i played around w/ colors for a while and wound up w/ this

voila, the initial kid concepts, to which subtle yet vital changes were  made after time. if any of you are curious about if im frustrated that that’s still the best i’ve ever drawn eodwulf’s nose the answer is yes. yes i am. 

astrid’s hair is not messy enough, theres not enough freckles, and she does not look ready to fight the entire world for a dare. 0/10. 

anyway then i did adult versions which look WAY OFF NOW LMAO 

eodwulf with way too much beard, looking far too messy when he ought to look very clean so that he can hide how much of a disaster he actually is, and also a glimpse into the very boring Ice Queen/Heartless Bitch we vaguely had astrid as to start with. even more out of character tho is the earring, astrid as she is today would absolutely never tolerate an earring unless she absolutely had to, girl’s got sensory issues but she didn’t back then. ALSO STILL NOT ENOUGH FRECKLE 

anyWHO a while after this it was decided that eodwulf has ADHD, something both the authors have a whole lot of lmao, and that was the point where ed REALLY took off and developing eodwulf went out of control and we both went Well I Guess We’re Gonna Have To Write This At Some Point Now

and with that happening is when developing astrid took more priority i think, because man, at that point in the game she came way too close to that really  annoying trope that shows up in fanfic a lot wherein The Girl is A Bitch who is Getting In The Way Of ~*The Yaois*~ and thats like, thats bad. we knew from the outset we were absolutely not setting this up as a love triangle because we both hate those but even w/ her having no romantic relationship to either of the two, like…she was kind of just There and the one who was most loyal to trent (the only thing of her original characterization that really stuck, honestly) and sooo boring???? 

so like, and i say this honestly, i managed to COMPLETELY FORGET that “reverse sasuke” cursed comment from the beginning of all this and STILL go “well what if we made her more like caleb’s rival that’d be fun” 

and that’s how astrid sorta wound up accidentally morphing into the Scrappy Underdog of this anime trio and calling her a naruto analogue is extremely cursed but also not inaccurate tbh 

started out with the concept of her popping into bren’s window because she heard they were doing magic and wanted to learn it too and evolved from there; we decided that she was gonna be neurodivergent too but, hilariously, initially that she was “the best at pretending to be neurotypical” (WE COMPLETELY REVERSED THAT AND IT IS FOR THE BETTER. SHE’S SO MUCH MORE FUN NOW) and made her also autistic because it one meant she could be like SAME HAT at bren really hard which’d make her feel more like part of the group instead of just the odd one out, and two because it fits with the whole rivals thing

branching off of that we made her just. INCREDIBLY direct. like. astrid’s thought process is “how can i accomplish what i want accomplished with the smallest number of steps? what are the consequences of doing it this way? do i give a shit? no? im gonna do that.” 

(which is why she climbed a tree to get into bren’s attic instead of using the door because that way she just completely skipped having to convince his mom to let her in)

i cant get into it much here because so many spoilers and we’re gonna explore it all, but like, astrid’s backstory turned into this exploration of the intersection of sexism and ableism especially as applied to a medieval-esque society in which the word “autism” doesn’t even EXIST and in which a convenient double standard exists Right There in the form of bren and like,, its gonna be good guys im excited for it 

as far as characters tho she does also have just a touch of Vimes from discworld to her, albeit like, she’s lawful evil to his lawful good, but she’s got the same tendency to stick REALLY FIERCELY to the rules that she thinks are important, even when they inconvenience her, even if it’d be so much easier to bend them just this once 

and for songs i cannot link like any astrid songs because they all might accidentally give away so much BUT I CAN LINK AN EODWULF SONG 

this one was HUGE for him
