The Cost of Peace

Word count: 2759

Prompts: "Just when were you planning on telling us that?"

Warnings: death, guilt. How Novali ended up being stuck with the Bad batch and why her family is gone. This is a heavy one.

I figured I might as a well posts these now seeing how some of them are a little more heavy and people are not exactly looking for this anymore. Or reading what I write, so might as well😁 (the freedom is amazing)

"You guys found Novali?!” The blue Holo of Novali's brother-in-law Derick fizzled a bit as the connection was strained, but the look of relief and shock on his face was evident.

“Yeah, we found her,” Hunter scratched his neck shamefully. “We found her stunned on the floor of a bar. Some rich sleemo was trying to take her away. Saying that she was part of some scheme to grab trade deals or something.” It wasn't a total lie, those things did happen, he just left out the part of who originally kidnapped her.

Derek wiped a hand over his face in shock. “Oh Maker… oh Maker.” Derick regained his military composition and looked sharply at Hunter. “Is she okay? Is she hurt? Did anything happen to her?” 

Hunter stood at attention. “She has some scratches and bruises from fighting her captors and we believe she may have been drugged, for she doesn't remember if she was used for the scheme or not.”

“My SISTER WAS DRUGGED?!” Came the cry of a woman off the holo who then very quickly came into view, looking a bit wild, tired, and ready to fight. Hunter could see the resemblance between the two sisters now: angled jaws with round chins, big eyes, small noses and freckles galore, though the sister looked more sharp while Novali looked more soft. He also noted the sharp screech in their voices and the downward angle of their brows when they were angry. “If you lay ONE finger on her I'll-” Hunter's brow slowly rose as the slew of vulgar words that poured from her mouth regarding him and his squad. He probably should have been offended but was more impressed than anything. Some of the things she said would have made even some of the saltiest clones pause and consider some life choices. He shared a look with Tech and Echo who each wore the same expression. Man this lady can swear. 

Derek finally stepped in by placing a hand on her shoulder and said in a sweet voice, “Penguin, calm down. These were the clones who helped us free our home.” 

Echo had to repress a snort. Penguin?

At that the woman stopped and looked surprised. She looked between her husband and the holo as if to confirm that he wasn't lying, and when no lie was detected, she bowed her head and said rather curtly, “I apologize, Warriors.”

“Warriors?” Hunter repeated by placing a hand on his hip.

“In their culture,” Tech jumped in, “If someone saves a populace or frees another from danger, they are given the title ‘Warrior’ and are shown utmost respect. Even outsiders may be granted this title.”

“How do you know so much about my culture?” Novali asked as she was being carried into the ship by Wrecker, who was followed by Crosshair carrying Omega. 

Tech answered carefully. “We were there before and I studied your world briefly during that mission, and I studied it more when we recovered you.”

Crosshair let Omega off his back and she stayed by his side holding his hand, not exactly wanting to move after being stunned. Crosshair regarded the holo of Derek and felt his anxiety creep up his neck. Did Derek and this woman by his side (who was probably his wife) know who took Novali? What did Hunter share?

Wrecker carefully let Novali down and helped her walk over to a chair after being stunned again. She grimaced with every step as she felt like her feet were stepping on pins and needles. “When were you there before?”

“They were with my squad.” Derek answered from the holo.

Novali's head shot up with wide eyes. Was this actually her brother-in-law? “D-Derek?”

“Nova!” Her sister cried with tears in her eyes, summoning her own.

“Rose!” The relief Novali felt at seeing her sister was almost indescribable as she covered her face with her hands.

“We've been worried sick about you!” Rose also covered her face the same way.

“We're going to get you at a rendezvous, okay?” Derek smiled encouragely at his sister-in-law. “And these guys are Warriors. They helped my squad defeat the Separatist that tried to take over. So you need to show them the Warriors Respect. They're going to take care of you until we meet up.”

At that Novali felt a jolt of electricity go through her, making her numb. “B-b-but Derek!” The rising fire of injustice was heating up. She then knew that Hunter hadn't told her family the whole story, or else they wouldn't be saying that. These guys didn't deserve any respect for what they put her through!

“I know your sister is rubbing off on you, but show them respect, even if you think they don't deserve it. We just want you back.”

At that Novali clamped her mouth shut. Unable to say anything more about how the Batch had treated her during this past week, even though she wanted to argue the point and expose these clones. But Derek was right. She just wanted to go back home. Or just back to her family at this point seeing how they were fleeing their home. She'll just tell them later. She swallowed down her pride and anger and nodded her head. “Understood sir.”

The Batch were a little stunned by her change of demeanor when talking to her family compared to them, but it made sense. They were the ones who kidnapped her in the first place. Or more specifically Crosshair was the one who did, who let out a small sigh of relief, being thankful that Hunter hadn't told Derek everything.

“Now that we know you're safe, we can leave now.” Derek said as he turned to Rose and gave her some sort of signal that the Batch could only guess was another culture thing. 

She nodded and left the holo, but not without waving and saying, “We'll see you soon!” Novali choked back a sob and waved back, silently wishing her sister would stay.

“Where would you like to meet?” Hunter asked.

“I'll send you the coordinates. I don't want to risk them being intercepted. And please take care of Novali. I know she-” the holo cut off suddenly.

Novali felt her stomach drop. No….

“Tech, what happened?” Hunter asked, a little worried.

“The connection has been severed.” Tech answered as his fingers flew across the panel. “I cannot reconnect.”

“The Empire came.”

They all stared at Novali, who looked pale with fear.

They suddenly remembered why her family was leaving their home. The Empire was coming to take over their moon. And they came early.

Echo immediately went to the back monitor and pulled up everything on Novali's homeworld with the girl staggering behind him, refusing help from the others, and they all watched in utter silence as there was live coverage of her home being bombarded by Star Destroyers.

Novali stared at the screen. Eyes wide and full of horror. Her home was being bombed. It was going up in flames. Ships were being shot out of the sky.

And some of those ships had her family. She knew because Derek gave Rose the signal to tell the others to fly.

The stress from the past week from being kidnapped, fighting the Batch, performing for a singing contest to swipe illegal trade deals, being drugged, being chased, shot at, molested, stunned, all of it, finally reached its boiling point as she watched her home crumble in front of her. 

Her world shattered.

The scream that erupted forth from her core tore through the entire ship, echoing all around into the deepest corners that were forgotten and into the hangar, ringing loud and painful in their ears and sending shivers down their spines. Her wailing tore at their souls as she witnessed everything she knew was being destroyed. Everyone she ever loved and cared for was being killed. Novali dropped to her knees as her body was wracked with sobs and more screams of agony, her tears dripping down to the floor. 

Her home was gone. 

Her parents were gone. 

Her brothers were gone. 

Her sisters were gone. 

Her friends were gone. 

Her world. 

Was gone. 

The batch were frozen in place, unable to move, as if her screams had rooted them to the floor, to witness the horror with her, rewatching a home being destroyed by the Empire, like they watched theirs. They knew this scream, but at the same time they didn't. They have heard it before but it was all internal. The suffocating scream of pain and despair.

Her screams reminded Hunter of when his heart broke when Crosshair was turned against them and he had to leave him behind, when Order 66 happened and their entire lives were turned upside down, watching his own home being destroyed by the Empire…. Everything he knew was gone, but he still had his family, unlike Novali. 

He was the first to stir, remembering that they needed to go before Sleemo Victor came back with reinforcements. He tapped Tech’s shoulder and quietly told him to turn off the screen and to get the ship ready. Novali must have heard him because she tackled Tech to the ground and caused him to fall onto Omega. She grabbed his blaster and shot wildly at the rest of them, hitting Echo’s prosthetics and missed everyone else by mere inches. Hunter threw his knife into the blaster and knocked it out of her hands, which grabbed her attention and she charged at him. He grabbed her arms and held her back and saw the utmost hate filled, vengeful, tear streaked face he had ever seen, and her screams of agony turned into screams of hate and rage as she tried to attack him.

“Wrecker! Hold her back!” Hunter ordered.

Wrecker silently wrapped up Novali in a bear hug, pinning her arms to her sides, her legs thrashing about as she growled and snarled at them. He noted how similar this was when Hunter had acted back on Idaflor, but this wasn't because of a dragon this time, it was out of pain of loss. “She's gone Wild.”

His voice was surprisingly calm, and Novali hated it. “I HATE ALL OF YOU!!” She screamed.

“Crosshair, grab that med kit!” Tech spoke up from the floor protecting Omega. “There's a sedation syringe!”

At that Novali snapped her head at the sniper and they locked eyes. “THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT! THEIR BLOOD IS ON YOUR HANDS! IF YOU JUST LEFT ME ALONE THEY WOULD ALL BE ALIVE!” Crosshair couldn't move. He wanted to but he couldn't. He didn't need Hunter’s heightened senses to feel the murderous rage coming off of her. “YOU MURDERED THEM! YOU MURDERER! I HOPE YOU DIE A PAINFUL DEATH! ALL OF YOU! AAAAAA!” She suddenly yelled as Echo stuck her with a needle. She tried to kick him but she missed and very quickly she went limp in Wrecker's arms, cursing them until she was finally knocked out.

They all felt shaken by the outburst and it wasn’t until Wrecker laid her down and put binders on her that they finally felt like they could move and breathe, though very silently and with a heaviness on their shoulders. 

Hunter finally spoke after he passed his hand over his face, trying to wipe away the exhaustion that was falling on him. “Tech, set a course to Idaflor. We're going back to the cabin for a bit until we can stop this Pantorian Victor Reeshe Slimoo.” Both Tech and Echo nodded and moved back to the cockpit after checking each other. Thankfully Novali didn't hit anything critical on the prosthetics and the damage was an easy enough repair. They took the ship up and left Ord Montel.

Wrecker picked up Omega from the floor and carried her up into her space and sat in the gunner's chair. “You doin okay kid?” He asked gently.

Omega only shook her head and wrapped her arms around Wrecker as tight as she could. Watching the destruction of Novali's home brought back the painful memories of watching Tapoca City being destroyed, and hearing the woman's scream struck a chord in her that hurt more than Tech falling on her. Her own tears fell and as she quietly cried onto Wrecker's shoulder. 

Wracker gently massaged her back with one hand while still trying to grapple with what he had witnessed on the monitor. Did that actually happen again? Was the Empire so corrupt that it would destroy multiple worlds that didn't bend to its whims?

Hunter was trying his best to coax Crosshair into sitting down. The sniper stayed standing in place though, replayed everything that Novali had ever said to him throughout the week up until the last moment, and it rang true in his soul.

If he hadn't kidnapped Novali, her family would have left before the Empire showed up.

But they waited for her to return.

And now they're dead.

He killed them. 

The guilt and shame that crashed down on him made him drop to his knees and Hunter caught him. His breathing was ragged and his body shook. This was all his fault!

“Heyheyhey! I've got you! I've got you.” Hunter held onto his brother's forearms to steady him. “We'll figure this out! It's going to be okay!” His worry for Crosshair grew stronger as he saw the sniper's face slowly changing to self loathing and despair.

“It's my fault.” Crosshair choked.

“No it's not! You didn't kill them!” Hunter grabbed the back of Crosshair's neck and brought their heads together, trying to force him to believe his words if he could. “You didn't go to her moon and ordered a bombardment! You didn't shoot anyone down! You're not there! You're not with the Empire anymore! You're here!” Hunter was trying his best to shoot down the lies that Novali shouted at his younger brother, trying to use sense and reason to save his brother from drowning in sorrow. “She's upset with the wrong people!”

“If I never kidnapped her then none of this would be happening!” Crosshair shouted and broke away from Hunter. “If I had just listened to you then she wouldn't be here! If I wasn't so desperate to find peace then-” he stopped talking and the silence hung heavy in the air.

Hunter finally understood what this whole thing was about and why Nara said Crosshair's reasoning for kidnapping Novali went deeper than what he thought. Crosshair wanted peace, and Novali seemed to be the living embodiment of peace as it came off of her at all times, and it did soothe them. It rolled off of her in waves and she couldn't explain why that was, only that it was always part of her. And for someone who was experiencing lots of guilt and shame, she would be a tempting prize to keep. Hunter carefully placed a hand on Crosshair's shoulder and asked quietly yet encouraging, “Just… when were you planning on telling us that?” He was referring to Crosshair's guilt.

Crosshair shook his head, knowing what Hunter was talking about. “I wasn't.” His voice cracked with emotion.

Hunter brought Crosshair back to him and hugged him for a good long time. Crosshair returned the embrace and silently cried into his brother's shoulder, with the guilt of kidnapping Novali eating him alive, her family's demise, and the destruction of her homeworld. If he hadn't kidnapped her, none of this would be happening. If he had leaned on his family again, this wouldn't be happening. 

Inferno’s deep voice echoed in his mind. 

“You are a fool!”

A fool that killed so many innocent lives.

And yet…

“Even though you are a fool, you're more than that.” Tore's voice broke through, making Crosshair pause a second. “You made mistakes, yeah? I'm glad that you feel remorse though, you have a conscious mate. You can't go back to fix them, those mistakes, so there's no point in ruminating on them. And it will take a while, but you must move on. And you will move on.”

“We have you Crosshair.” Hunter tightened his embrace. “You made a mistake. But you did not destroy her life. The Empire did.” He seemed to emphasize Tore's point unknowingly. “And if she gives you more grief about it, or tries anything to hurt you, we have your back.” Hunter pushed Crosshair away and brought their foreheads together again. “We will honor her brother-in-law’s request and take care of her though, but you come first.”

Crosshair only nodded.
