It sparked a tik tok trend and speaks exactly to what we're talking about today, the objectification of Latina women. Context surrounding the video, Andrew Callaghan is an independent reporter/journalist who creates videos on Youtube and Patreon under the handle Channel 5 News (formerly, All Gas No Brakes). Andrew has been lauded for doing some incredible work with documenting the BLM protests in 2020, the Chauvin trial verdict, the January 6th riots, etc. The work he has done is incredible. He really captures what it felt like in those moments. However, he also platforms the most insane right-wing takes ever. He is very clearly against these types of beliefs, but nonetheless provides a platform for them. And if there's one thing that is true about art, it is that the creator loses control of the art the moment it enters the public sphere. So oftentimes Andrew's long-form interviews, which were done in good faith, will get clipped and take on a life and trend of their own. This happened with the above tik tok and it gets at something that I've been feeling recently. I feel like fetishization is now being disguised as acceptance. This language is going to be awkward but I'm not sure how else to write it, but as it has become more acceptable to date outside of your race, I think many white people have done so and have seen themselves as a white savior. We saw this with enlisted men marrying East and South Asian women during the Vietnam war. We see this with the fetishization of Filipina women. We see this with the fetishization of kpop artists. And while there has long been a white savior complex in American men, I think the important distinction is that while I was growing up I heard J.Lo called exotic and different in derogatory ways. Now, I feel like people will objectify non-white women and try to disguise it as acceptance and being woke. As if being a misogynist to a larger array of women makes you progressive.

I most recently butted up against the fetishization of specifically Latina women in Chris DiStefano's new Netflix special "Speshy Weshy" I turned the special off after about ten minutes when he spent those first ten minutes of the show talking about how he (a white man) was now Puerto Rican because his wife and children are Puerto Rican. He kept going on about how he was a proud Puerto Rican man and blah blah blah. The vibe was that he objectified his wife. By marrying her, he now had access to this new world of cultural experiences that he felt entitled to.

I thought the readings paired well with each other. I didn't know a lot about Frida Kahlo other than that she was queer. The two readings we had on her lead me to an debate that I've been having with myself for a while.... which is that we firstly need to unwhitewash and unwater-down historical figures, understand them for the political people that they were, and celebrate that. On the other hand, some of the best representation we have is problematic. Ellen, great for lesbian representation, also hangs out with George Bush and is famously abusive to her staff. Ru Paul, made drag more mainstream and accessible, also is transphobic and really into fracking. Caitlyn Jenner, great that we have a famous trans person to initiate conversations, also got away with manslaughter and actively works against the trans community in favor of siding with the rich. All of this is to say that the representation we have is complicated. I am of course grateful to everyone above for being themselves publicly, that can be enough, but we also have to understand that rich people are first and foremost rich, they may also be trans and queer and black and brown, but they are rich above all else and so it's never really full and complete representation. I of course put none of this baggage on J. Lo because I simply do not know enough about her life based on one day's worth of readings. Representation matters, life is messy, I'm proud of those who stand up in the face of objectification even if they are super rich and far removed from my own experience with queerness.

I think that objectification can be empowerment if that is what you're looking for. If objectifying yourself makes you feel good and it is done on your terms and with your boundaries then go for it. There is liberation in dressing outside of the norm and if you are doing it for yourself and it makes you feel powerful, then go for it - though it is vitally important that these things are negotiated on the individual level.

I feel that my thoughts aren't as cogent as they have been other days, this is a complicated topic. Representation and objectification are tricky, and I'm not sure that I have fully parsed out what I understand them to be, but I'm on my way there.

I know that sounds hecka harsh and I am glad people are excited and hopeful: but from every post I’ve read they are excited because Ric and star will be together. They are not excited about getting the individual characters/ again it’s all for the ship.

4. Shatterstar not being respected as a character and instead being boiled down to sexualized tropes (see PADs x factor investigations run and how Ooc that is. I highly suspect that this will be played out in DP for comedic effect and have braced myself for it)

the bad part about wanting lgbt representation in overwatch is that there is almost always gonna be more cons than pros…. i’m not saying that as i am against the representation but when you have to depend on a company where their main demographic are straight men, it will never be handled correctly. either from the company or the fans.

for example:

when tracer was announced as being canonically in a relationship with emily, most straight men players (sadly the main demographic) who read the comic lost their shit. others who didnt read the comic had no idea that she was even dating emily because of lack of content in game. the ones who did read the comic either celebrated it, assumed she was bisexual so that men gamers still “had a chance” with a fictional woman, or hated that she was with emily.

most of the current characters have more cons than pros if they were to be announced as lgbt. either straight men gamers would be upset with the choices if the next character to be confirmed as lgbt was a man or they’d fetishize the character if they were a woman. or straight women would fetishize the lgbt men characters and alienate the women characters.

mei, mercy, widowmaker, d.va, sombra being lesbian, trans, or bisexual would either cause straight men to fetishize them or they would get upset because they don’t have the chance to project their toxic masculinity against these femme characters and try to “date” them. this would also cause the straight women “yaoi” communities to alienate these characters or treat them as an annoyance for getting in the middle of their gay ships. as for mei and d.va, they would get worse treatment because of straight men’s infantization of eastern asian women. 

genji being gay, trans, or bisexual is extremely unlikely just because of the overwhelming amount of gency lines and lore in game. or cause an uproar from straight men gaming community.

mccree, reaper, solder: 76, or hanzo being lgbt would most likely cause an uproar from straight men gamers who hate mlm and/or think that those characters being gay, bisexual, or trans lowers the masculinity factor that most straight men gamers enjoy and love playing them for. the flip side is that because the four of these men characters are conventionally attractive, it would make the straight women who enjoy the game fetishize the men even more than they already do.

roadhog being gay, trans, or bisexual would cause the straight men gamers to treat him even worse than they already do because of his weight and age. they’d lose more respect for his character because of his orientation, gender, and appearance.

junkrat being gay, trans, or bisexual would give the same response as roadhog. the straight men playing the game would lose more respect than they had already because he is designed to be a comic relief character. not only does that cause an uproar, but its also just bad representation because of his implied mental issues and his comic relief position in the game’s lore.

while i am not happy with the way blizzard has treated tracer’s sexuality in canon by not including any content in game or expanding on her and emily’s relationship, you can tell they chose tracer because of her strong butch woman coding.

the lgbt needs more representation in the gaming community and blizzard is trying but not enough and still cares more about profit from straight men gamers than true representation of lgbt gamers.

When Harry Potter came out no one thought they were wizard, no one attempted to do spells or find hogwarts. When The Hunger Games came out, nobody got in a ring to fight their friends to the death. There’s a reason that during political regimes, certain books are banned and why books are sorted by age categories for the content within it. Repeated exposure to a subject can lead to desensitization towards its subject matter. Though studies have not found that kids who play violent video games significantly demonstrate violent behavior, studies have shown that kids who play violent video games are less affected by violence in media. 

Constant exposure to fetishization of a social group, be it ethnicity or a same-sex relationship, without critical thinking on the reader’s part reduces the reader’s ability to recognize fetishization as a problem in reality as well due to internalized normalization of the content. There’s a reason why fetishization of Asian women (’yellow fever’ is such an ugly term) and desexualization of Asian men is so prevalent in the current, real world, and it’s all to do with the works of fiction and basically fictional accounts of the Western world about the Orient. 

If you’re going to make it easy for me and bring in the big works like Harry Potter, I don’t even have to pull out my psych book - I can just link you the studies. First of all, no one may have thought they were a wizard or attempt to do spells, but the number of kids who waited for their Hogwarts letter is more than you might think, and that’s only approaching the issue in the way you have narrowly defined it.

Fiction has social, transformative capabilities. Here’s a piece in the New York Times about how the themes present in Harry Potter has been influential to an entire generation. Here’s an article in the Scientific American about how the series instills empathy in children. Here’s the NPR’s on a study that claims reading Harry Potter leads to more positive social attitudes in children. Johns Hopkins University wrote a whole book on the subject. The Conversation also touches on this, and further, links to other studies on how fiction influences audience thinking.

Those are just the big-name publications I could link on Tumblr. The number of scholarly sources I can access through my university’s database is astronomical. Everyone wants to write their thesis on Harry Potter, I suppose, aha.

The Hunger Games has not been around for as long as Harry Potter nor comparably internationally successful, so there aren’t as many studies completed, but there is still this article from the Huffington Post with quotes from students remarking on real-world connections to the story and this Daily Dot piece on the series’ cultural impact. Oh, would you look at that. No one got in a ring to fight to the death, but there’s been an uptick in archery lessons for girls.

And to address your last point, no, wanting two characters to have sex or be in a relationship does not mean you are fetishizing them. It depends on why you want the characters to have sex or be in a relationship and how you portray it, and with Killing Stalking, it’s all too easy to get it wrong. 

If the primary reason you want the characters to have sex is because ‘it would be hot’, it’s fetishistic, and not just in the case of LGBT relationships. However, it is more damaging to LGBT people because proportionally, there are fewer LGBT sex scenes in media, so proportionally, there are fewer LGBT sex scenes done without a fetishistic gaze. If the primary reason you want the characters to be in a relationship is because you find it titillating, then it’s fetishistic, and it’s more damaging to LGBT people for the same reason: There are fewer LGBT relationships in mainstream media. 

Real-life lesbians have to deal with men who think they can butt in with a threesome, an idea popularized by pornographic fiction. Real-life gay men have to deal with gay-ship fangirls who tactlessly ask, “Which of you tops?” without realizing that asking about someone’s sex life might be intensely intrusive, thanks to yaoi culture. Bisexual and people with low sex-drive in general all have to deal with people who think that they can be the ‘exception’ and change their mind once they have sex, thanks to a lot of damaging fiction and ‘no means yes’ fiction written in the past.

Fiction can very much exert cultural and social influence, and trying to claim otherwise is a discredit to many great storytellers of the past and an offense to many aspiring storytellers of the future.
