What this post aims to do is provide an in-depth look at the progression of Spain and Romano’s relationship over their life courses.

Early Guardianship:

The two got off to a rough start when Spain conquered South Italy. Romano, who already had trust issues stemming from the twofold sword of having Rome focus all his attention on rearing Veneziano and later dying without much warning, has these issues exacerbated by his early relationship with Spain.

Spain wishes that he had received Veneziano instead and begs Austria to trade Italy brothers with him. I attribute the crudeness of this to the fact that it was very early on in the series, but canon material is canon material; it must be worked with. Of more importance is the parallel of coming second to Veneziano.

Essentially, Romano develops an inferiority complex and feels inadequate in comparison to Veneziano. He can’t cook, he can’t clean, and he has no manners. I mention this because it acts as a backdrop for Romano’s initial hostility towards Spain.

Even as Spain gives him the best care possible, Romano denies the reality and states otherwise. Being cared for is foreign to him, so the hostility didn’t just emerge in a vacuum. He’s distrustful and confused. Or perhaps he’s even testing Spain by lashing out, seeing how much the latter can handle.

Point is, there’s a degree of skepticism that makes sense and it would be too simplistic to portray Romano as an entitled brat given what he experienced in his early childhood.

Ex: Spain resorts to wearing rags and funds a whole new wardrobe for Romano. Notice how the blush on Romano’s face (embarrassed, surprised and flattered) betrays his true emotions rather than his hostile remark.

The next strip is particularly important in resolving this sense of devaluement that Romano felt.

The frustration was mostly felt in how Romano didn’t live up to Spain’s expectations, as he was held up to a measuring rod that reflected Veneziano’s qualities. In other words, Romano wasn’t being valued as his own person by Spain.

It was only until Spain learned to value Romano for his own unique qualities and positive character traits that the two came to an understanding.

This occurred when Romano perceived a troop of German soldiers that Spain had allied with to be enemies. To Spain, Romano’s tantrum is childish…but that’s because he is a child. In Romano’s world, Spain was in danger, and he was willing to sacrifice his life for him. That’s why Romano becomes angry with Spain and throws another fit when he’s reprimanded.

The two take some time to cool off and Spain realizes that even though Romano perceived the situation incorrectly, he had good intentions. The message conveyed at the end of this strip– titled Boss Spain Doesn’t Understand–entails Spain learning to step into Romano’s world and understand his way of viewing things. By doing so, Spain was able to appreciate Romano for who he is rather than who he’s not.

In another strip, Romano shows his appreciation for the financial sacrifices Spain made for him, by deciding to sleep with the latter. Of course, it’s very Romano-esque, resulting in Romano taking over Spain’s bed. What’s touching is that Spain understands that Romano is trying to convey his thanks and accepts it as is.

Late Guardianship:

Although this is a brief and shallowly covered period of their relationship, we know that the two lived comfortably and peacefully together.

Spain sees Romano grow up from a young child, to a child, and to a late teenager.

There’s even an arc where Spain passes down his medieval chivalric romance novels to Romano, who goes through a nerdy middle school phase with them.

While long-lasting and cordial, the stable environment Romano had found in Spain’s home ended abruptly upon Italian Unification, where he was forced to live with his brother after centuries of separation.

It’s not so much that this creates a break in Spain and Romano’s relationship, but as I’ll get into in the next section, it creates a bit of a grey area for them regarding how they navigate the shift from a guardian-child relationship to simply being friends.

Post-Guardianship:

Regardless of the fact that their guardian-child relationship ceased to exist, Spain and Romano still relied on each other. They were and remain as each other’s support systems.

Ex: When Romano moves to America for work during the Second Industrial Revolution – a foreign and unfamiliar place–his first thought is to call Spain.

Spain is still home in his mind, and home brings comfort. Notice how it’s stated that Romano is closer with Spain than he is with his own brother ↑

The irony of their relationship is that even though Spain has learned to understand Romano – such as seeing through his hostility – he still remains oblivious at times. In other words, they either click and are on the same wavelength, or they completely misunderstand each other, echoing the Boss Spain Doesn’t Understand comic.

Either way, the reliance hasn’t gone away.

What’s new in this phase of their relationship, however, is that Spain can also rely on Romano.

Ex: Romano saves Spain with imports during an economic crisis. He even faces off against the mafia, whom he’s normally terrified of.

That said, I think the “grey area” in Spain and Romano’s relationship has a lot to do with the fact that they’ve worked away from the guardian dynamic and yet haven’t exactly defined how they should go about their friendship.

Aquarius: Giacomo Puccini. How would I describe the graphical style of the game Little Red Hood for the NES if I were to use persistent, geographical allusion? Well, I’d say that it’d be like what would happen if you tried to translate the geography of Afghanistan onto 8-bit graphics hardware, particularly how it appears near a strong river like the Helmand: It provided that Galilean backdrop that so many directors used in their films about Christ. Now, that’s what I did think back in my flawed memory of the game, but now that I look back at it again, the landscape is definitely more inspired by that of Florida, particularly around the parts where sawgrass is heavy and palm trees are native, but it’s not a tropical landscape per se, nor is it an entirely swampy one. It’s particularly the presence of palm trees that struck me as confusing, because my brain has always associated the odd, yellow colors of its groundwork to that of a renovated Pacific area, but the game proves that it doesn’t use the palm trees throughout the entire game. But the opening levels still confuse me because the story of Little Red Riding Hood that the game’s based on originates in various parts of Europe, and the foliage we see in the opening act doesn’t reflect that of any European landscape. It could just be an artist interpretation in the case of making the presentation of the game think you were in a Pacific island or near the heartlands of Okeechobee, but I think it might’ve just been a case of “not giving a shit” as they say. There’s more to talk about with how my brain subconsciously linked my flawed memories of the game’s graphical presentation with that of the riverbanks of the Helmand; I guess I just wanted to prove my initial biases and not examine how the game doesn’t even commit to even my ideas whenever I think of Afghani scenery, but maybe even those are failing to catch up with the fact that there’s so many different aesthetical implications within the vastness of the nation of Afghanistan that, uh, I don’t know: I just like Afghani landscape. Have this picture of a village in the Bamyan desert. [,] «Aukai, what the hell are you talking about? I’ve been eavesdropping back here since you started and I still don’t understand.» I’m t-trying to paint this scene in my head, but I don’t have my tools to do it, so I’m thinking loudly about it. «…Whatever.» […] There’s no doubt in my mind that he’d make a great tamer: Our protagonist of this beautiful world, now ravaged by corruptors that his world has gone to hell for trying to stop. Pisces: Franz Liszt. I’m fucking devastated: My favorite rap-battle channel on YouTube just deleted their channel. Not only that, all of their social media accounts are gone. They had such great works as "Goku vs. Rick Sanchez", "George Washington vs. the Invisible Man", and "Luigi vs. Slenderman." I don’t know if I can keep going the same route of content consumption knowing that the only ironic rap battle channel deleted everything. «Hold on, your favorite video-channel on the Internet was ironic? I don’t think I’m getting this, Maggie.» Let me explain it: It was good because it didn’t take itself seriously. For a while, that was it’s niche, and certainly other creators arose to copy it, but they were always the first. «So, is this like, some independent person making all of these or is there an entire network of people collaborating to create this music?» You’re right the second time: They used to be part of this collaborative effort to make these videos, but the guy I like, in particular, broke off from the bigger picture. I decided to take a break from packing and do something historical, based on @aph-fanficchallenges​ writing meme and the #6 one, “a historical piece.”

I feel like there isn’t much in terms of the actual history, but from a character introspection or whatever. The backdrop to this is the Slovak National Uprising, which took place from August 29 to October 28 in 1944.

I’m not going to take up all the pre-story notes so I’m going to drop a few links to read up on it, because a few key events are mentioned or alluded to:

Uuuuhmmmmm a lot of things are said in this story that idk would ever be said by a nation to their leader, but I like to think nations probably have snapped on a leader before, because they also represent the people and also, they too have emotions and morals and opinions.

Ondrej (Slo) just is also so very tired of the bullshit.

There are mentions of Velvet Pair (because this garbage trash writer likes them too much). You should all know Ivan, and Tereza is Cze.

August 30th, 1944

Smoking had been a nasty habit that he knew she never would’ve approved of, even in the times they were not together.

The cigarette hung from his lips as he watched the buzz around him, catching a few words of conversation here and there. The words “Fascists” and “German” were tossed around a few times, but currently, they were riding the high having taken Banská Bystrica. As a man, he felt proud of these brave souls, fighting for the rights they deserved.

But as a country, he felt useless.

The Lieutenant Colonel approached him, saluting him as he held his gaze. “Pozdravy,” he welcomed. “It is nice to see you out with the true people of the nation.”

And ouch, that hurt pretty bad.

He kept an icy exterior, trying to let the comment roll off his back. “I have been feeling a bit of tension, I figured I should see what exactly is going on.” The man sneered, as his eyes darted around the headquarters. “Are you prepared for a counteroffensive strike against your efforts, Lieutenant?”

“I have the spirit to fight for the land I long for, Sir.”

He smiled. “Then that’s all I can truly ask from you.”

September 1st, 1944

The Lieutenant Colonel had become a general the day before, after having been disarmed on August 31st.

He had heard the news before he went and sat in the office of a man he could honestly say he did not care for - even if he was a man of God.

The cross against his skin ever so slightly burned. He thought about the man before him, how much tension he had caused. Many people - good people; good husbands and wives and mothers and children and brothers - had been sent to their death by this man’s hand.

If he squinted, he could faintly see the strings on his hands that once upon a time, Tereza had pointed out. He smiled, remembering her sweet, elegant voice as she pointed.

Ondra, look. The puppet strings are moving, ever so slightly. Must be hard, when the master is all the way in Germany.

“I received word you went to Banská Bystrica prior to our disarming of it.”

He blinked, nodding his head gently. “Áno, sir. I felt the tension and they are my people.”

His president scoffed. “Well, those people are trying to destroy the sanctity of the state you and I are working hard to create. No matter, those who were caught, were shipped off to Germany.”

He did not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out what that meant. He clenched the arms of his chair, realizing this man, the man that was dubbed Vodca, was sinister, in this regard. People were caught and with no regards to any family or friends they may have had, were sent to be killed.

Well, if he were completely honest, he knew the man before him was just there in his fancy office with his fancy titled for formalities sake. He was just there because he could be, because it made it look like Slovakia was actually in control of his own land and actions.

"Vodca, sir...?”

“I have no time for idle chat, please. If you must say something important, say it now.”

He bit his lip and shook his head. He rose from his seat, leaving the room without a second word.

October 5th, 1944

His body was tired. His body was weak. His heart was heavy and he realized that deep down, everything was falling apart.

Ivan was a terrible man - or to him, he was, in this very moment. He had no regards for the fact that his own people were trying to do what they could to resist this occupation. Ivan had no compassion.

There was a promise, and prior to this, Ivan had apparently always been a man of his word, until the support never came on time. He kept asking the man what was going on.

September 8th came and the next thing he knew, the Dukla Pass Offensive had started. He was furious the offensive came too late, in his opinion. Ivan had said it was foolproof and that it wouldn’t take long to get to Slovakia.

The next thing he knew, it was October, and the Soviet forces had yet to reach him.

He assumed it was not all on Ivan’s shoulders. The 1st Czechoslovak Army in Slovakia (also known as the former rebel forces), without a doubt, had began to split and fracture. Nobody could seem to agree. He could feel as if his limbs were being ripped apart.

He rolled over onto his stomach and reached under his pillow, examining each and every envelope he had saved during the last few years. The neat handwriting formed poetry on the page, trying to play it off as if everything were better than it would be.

And soon, my love, you’ll be by my side again.

He knew she was currently trying to secure more support. He knew that when all was said and done, he’d be with her again, under the same roof. That was the plan of the Army. That was the plan of the Allies.

But this plan seemed more like a dream. He crumpled the letter, biting his lip.

“Please,” he choked out, “don’t let this be a dream.”

October 26th, 1944

“I did what I could, Ondrej.”

Ondrej knew that seeing her was dangerous, even though he still loves her, but right now, he is Slovakia. He is a state, protected by German forces, who have viciously taken down the people who created the 1st Czechoslovakia Army in Slovakia.

“It’s hard being Czechoslovakia without my Slovakia,” she whispered, leaning closer to him. He frowned.

“Terezie, my love, what happened?”

“Ivan’s boss focused his energies on Hungary and Poland. The other Allies... there was no support. I couldn’t...” Her voice cracked. “Your people are so brave, Ondra. So very, very brave. I wish I could have done more.”

“So many of my people are dead, and nobody will have closure.”

Tereza’s eyes widened as she stepped away from him, looking up. He probably looked a bit of a mess, with his hair wild and tangled, dark circles under his eyes, and his uniform unkept and messy. He wished he could’ve cleaned up a bit, for her sake.

But, he knows he’s too tired, and to be fair, she looked like she had also seen better days.

“It hurts to see you like this, lover,” she muttered, taking his hands in hers

“The resistance is done for,” he told her. “Or, for the most part. But I think my people have fight left in them still.” She laughed as he brought her tiny hands to his mouth. She flushed.

“I feel that soon enough, this war will be done for.”

He hopes, for his sake, she is right. Because he didn’t think any more people needed to die.

October 30th, 1944

He stands next to his president as he holds the celebration in the city it all began in. Two months ago, he walked the streets to see the leader of the resistance, to see what the people felt.

Now, he stands before the people, as the Vodca rambles about the German soldiers who bravely stopped the uprising, and how he, as a great leader, will make sure the lives of the Slovak soldiers are spared.

Ondrej looks on into the crowds, his heart empty. From his lips hangs a cigarette (a nasty habit, really) as he tries to fill the hole with something. Some people are proud and celebrating, but he can’t figure it out.

Somewhere, his people are sad.

When the celebration ends, he’s on his third cigarette and he turns to his president. He claims he had saved Slovakia from a bombardment, that he was able to save lives. Standing on the streets of Banská Bystrica, he feels nostalgia wash over him.

“I was here when it started,” he whispers. The president gives him an odd look. “I was here and saw the soldiers that were deported. The ones you knew about. Now, you want to save them?”

“With that rebellion ended, I can safely say I will try,” the president replies.

“The main part is over, but my people keep fighting.” He looks up to the sky. “The Germans will kill collaborators. And you know they won’t be the only casualties that will occur.”

“We do what we need to do.” The president eyes him, dangerously. “As a nation, I thought you understood.”

“Nation or not, I have feelings and morals.”

“As a nation, you are to sit down and do as your told.”

That is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. The president is glaring, but Ondrej - no, Slovakia, shakes his head. He cackles, sending chills down his own spine when he realizes how cold he sounds. The president steps back as he crosses his arm.

“How many more people have to die in order to appease your puppet master?” he snarls under his breath. “You immoral, son-of-a-bitch. You broke up Czechoslovakia, you participate in the murder - genocide - of my people, and you expect me to sit and be quiet? You may be the president, the Vodca, but you are nothing more than a placeholder until the Germans take over.”

The president sputters, as if trying to control the nation. He grins, eyes dark with hate. He feels the spirit of those who keep fighting surging through him. He thinks of Tereza, of Czechoslovakia, of himself, of the people, of the God he prays to every night to make it through to the next day.

He knows that Tereza is right. There is no denying that what happened with him is part of the larger scale, that Slovakia has also made a mark on the war. A war, he can feel, is coming to a close very soon.

“The end is near, and when it comes, I’ll be back on the streets, holding a celebration.” He declares this boldly, pointing to his president. “And when I hold this celebration, I will present the people with your fucking head on a stick.”

High school was some of the best and worst moments of my life, and looking back, there are so many things that I wish I’d done and things that made me successful, so I wanted to share them! Of course, disclaimer, these tips may not apply to everyone!

(These tips generally apply to all classes, but if you have a specific subject you want tips on, I’ve taken these AP courses: european history, world history, us gov’t, macroeconomics, lang, lit, calc ab, chemistry, physics 1, physics c, environmental science, art: drawing, biology, human geography, chinese, and art history. Feel free to message me!)

College applications are a crapshoot- I can’t begin to tell you the number of incredible, brilliant people with extraordinary, international level achievements that got denied at top schools in favor of those lacking those accomplishments. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean those who got in don’t have qualities that earned them a spot, it just speaks to the unpredictable nature of the college application process. When deans of admission at top schools openly say they could reject all admitted students and build the same exemplary class from the waitlist, or that they have enough qualified applicants to fill 3 or 4 classes with, there’s a certain amount of luck involved. Therefore I urge all rising seniors to go into this process realizing that the odds are not in your favor. I went into the process with too much blind hope, too confident in my ability to be that lucky 1 in 10 (or less) that would gain admission, and I was sorely disappointed. So that leads me to my next tip…

Don’t do things just for your college application- Those slim acceptance rates are the exact reason I urge you not to join things solely for how good they look on a college application. It seems counterintuitive; wouldn’t they give you a better chance of acceptance? However, my point is not to dissuade you from extracurriculars, but rather to commit to ones that genuinely make you happy. As I wrote above, the process is so competitive that even international achievements may mean rejection, so don’t waste your high school experience by dedicating so much time and effort to something that you feel obligated to do.

Try everything your freshman and sophomore year- My biggest regret is not joining clubs where my passions lie simply because I was too lazy or scared of things like public speaking my freshman year. It’s much more intimidating to join as upperclassmen, and you may not be able to participate at all the levels/in all the ways people who have dedicated 3-4 years can. Even if you don’t think its for you (like debate for me because of my fear of public speaking), I urge you to expand your horizons and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Many clubs give you great opportunities to build leadership, public speaking, etc. skills and to find your passions.

Know both sides of the flashcard- I learned this tip from my organic chemistry class, and I’d never though about how useful it is. For example, if you’re memorizing polyatomic ions, it’s extremely important that you know both the formula and the name, as either version may show up on the exam. Not doing this also makes the weaknesses in your memorization evident- whenever I study vocab, I tend to glance at the side with the term and only memorize the definition. This meant that when I was given only the definitions, I couldn’t remember the word they defined, because I was so used to being given the vocab word and responding with the definition. 

The first lecture of the unit is one of the most important for STEM classes- I know the beginning of the unit can often seem like the perfect time to tune out, as it goes over information you’ve previously learned or the easiest material of the topic, but it often forms the foundation for everything else in the unit. For example, the first lecture on a stoichiometry unit will probably teach you dimensional analysis, a skill integral to calculating molecular or empirical formulas, moles or grams of a substance, etc. 

Buy/sell books secondhand- Everyone knows how expensive college textbooks are, but between SAT and AP prep books, and books for English, high school books can cost quite a bit of money too. Unless they redesigned the exam recently, you absolutely don’t need the newest edition of the review book, so buy from upperclassmen and then sell it to underclassmen the following year.

Learn to self study- Unless you’re really lucky, you’re guaranteed to have a teacher who doesn’t teach, teaches badly, or whose teaching style just doesn’t work for you. Personally, I find that self learning, especially if I’m struggling because resources such as textbooks and online explanations, and videos seem to contradict, really helps me understand the topic throughly. In AP bio, my teacher had us create claymation videos on the processes of cellular respiration and photosynthesis independently. It was incredibly frustrating and confusing because all the resources described the cycles in varying degrees of details, but I felt like I genuinely understood the topic, instead of having been spoon-fed the information and memorizing it. Obviously, this method isn’t very efficient for frequent use, but the key is to try to understand the material independently instead of going to the teacher the moment you hit a snag. 

Keep your backpack/binders/notebooks reasonably organized- When teachers ask for homework to be passed up and you have to dig through mountains of papers in your backpack, not only is that super stressful, but a lot of teachers won’t let you turn it in after they have already collected all the papers. I was definitely guilty of being lazy and just stuffing papers, once I got them, into my backpack instead of taking a few seconds to slide them into a binder, and as a result I got 0s on lots of homework because either I couldn’t find it at the time or because everything was so messy I didn’t remember there was homework. Try to have some sort of organization system going on or at least a homework folder, because those 0s add up and can be the difference between an 89 and 90. 

You’re gonna get senioritis, badly, and that’s ok- I’ve always been the type of person who did every homework assignment and was very focused on grades, so the idea that I would completely let myself ago seemed absurd to me. Don’t underestimate what senior year does to you. I can honestly count on one hand the econ worksheets that I actually turned in during senior year, and I made my first B in a grading period during the spring. I was very stressed about how awful my grades were, but unable to muster the energy to do anything about it. And you know what, it’s ok. It’s senior year, you can give yourself a break. Yes, your senior grades are still important for college applications, so don’t go from straight A’s to straight C’s, but for the most part, all the hard work is behind you. Do keep in mind that these habits may haunt you when you’re a college freshman. I haven’t started classes yet, but based on how little I studied for the math placement exam for my college, senioitis doesn’t magically end when you graduate, so don’t let it get completely out of control during the year. 

Learn how to do math without a calculator- If you take either of the AP Calculuses or the SAT, you need to master this skill because there are sections of the exams that are strictly non-calculator.  Beyond that, when you get to calculus, you’ll be introduced to complicated concepts, where not being able to multiply by hand will drag you down. 

Keep old notes- Not only for finals, but some topics are very interdisciplinary, like biochemistry, so it’s very important that you have a working knowledge of both biology and chemistry. As you take advanced classes, such as for me, taking physics c after physics 1, it will be assumed that you have completely mastered the basics, and they will be skipped or referenced very quickly. It is very useful to look at notes on the basics, which provide the foundation for the advanced material you learn. 

Invest in a whiteboard- Whenever I was learning about processes or cycles, from the Krebs cycle to organic chemistry mechanisms, it was really useful to practice drawing the steps over and over again. Then when it came to the test, I could do a brain dump and draw out the information as a reference. 

Understand formulas instead of blindly memorizing- This basically has physics and calculus written all over it. In physics, you should be given formula charts during exams, and in any case, something like F=ma isn’t terribly hard to memorize. The problem comes when there are a multitude of formulas that are derived from one of the fundamental equations. Of course, deriving from scratch each time is incredibly tedious, but I want to dissuade you from simply memorizing it or storing it on your calculator, because that means you probably don’t understand the physics behind it. What makes physics so difficult and different from any other subject you’ve taken is that every problem will have a slightly different scenario that tests your understanding of the physics behind it. 

Use all the time given to you during tests- I know I hate looking back through my test because I just get so bored halfway through, but missing points because of silly mistakes is honestly the most frustrating thing ever when you had plenty of time to check. Depending on if I have time, I like to cover my original work and resolve the question. If checking answers is not your thing, try slowing now when you first see each question, and checking your work briefly each step. 

Form study groups- Talking about something, especially teaching it to someone, always helped me remember something so much better than reading it on paper. It’s also so important to have second interpretations of the information you’re studying to ensure that you don’t make a huge misconception.  

AP students: released/practice exams are your best friend- Obviously, they’re the best resources for studying for the AP exam, but they’re also a great tool for a hint at what your teacher’s tests may look like. AP teachers have access to tons of College Board material and will often use questions directly from old exams. 

If you start getting confused during a lecture- Many times this is because I didn’t pay attention during the very beginning, so I’m missing that important foundation I talked about in the previous tip. Of course, I typically wouldn’t recommend doing things other than listening to what is currently being taught, but in this case, I would just get more confused and it’s a waste of time. So I discretely go back to my previous notes and focus on understanding them. 

The most stressful part of schoolwork is just thinking about your assignments- There’s always specific period of time that threatens to kill me- a week where I had two competitions simultaneously, in cities 3 hours apart. When you’re taking 7 AP classes at the same time, just reading over your to-do list will make you want to cry. Even on a normal day, as I go to classes throughout the day and my list of homework gets longer and longer, it makes me so stressed to where I’m planning out how to finish everything and I’m no longer listening in class. It overwhelmed me so much that I just wanted to take a nap and avoid school. But every single time, stressing about the work I have is 1000x worse than sitting down and actually going through each task. I find that what had seemed impossible before was very doable, and many times I even finished early enough to relax before bed. Keep a positive mindset, don’t underestimate your abilities, and have the discipline to start working immediately on the hardest days, and you’ll be fine. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the workload that is able to be handled by one person can work for another, and things like mental illnesses are things I have no experience in, so this is definitely just something that worked for me and is not applicable to everyone.

I am about to finish my studies soon (ugh) and I started to reflect on a lot of stuff. Once after a school trip I was sitting on the bus. Some of my classmates thought I already got off the bus and started to talk about me. The content in and on itself wasn't negative. They started to project from me onto 1.3 billion other people. I noticed, to them I represented all Chinese people.

During a violin event a girl told me I didn't look like a Chinese because my eyes were too big.

When I was in 7th grade, the "red spies" who came to steal and copy German technology hit the news. During a certain period of time then news frequently reported such instances. On a German-Chinese forum, several Chinese wrote that they suddenly found themselves jobless because their employers fired them without any reason (aside from fear that they could be spies). I realized my mother was right. I will have a disadvantage on the job market and I am easily disposable.

In 7th grade we had a skiing excursion. There was a presentation on climate change and the teacher claimed that China had a major impact on the climate. Responsibilities of other countries went unmentioned. I cried (a reoccurring habit). My roommates during the trip told the teacher and he apologized and explained that he understood that European countries had a big footprint.

In 9th grade I found a note next to my seat in the bus, roughly saying "You look cute Manga girl. Call me: xxxx".

A half-Indian friend wrote me that their brother liked his time in the US a lot. Less people would be envious of his success despite him being Indian. Later on that friend wrote me they were bullied. It was evident that them being half-Indian was a factor. I was... too young and my support was useless and not helpful at all. (still young tho and still making so many mistakes).

When I aced an exam, a friend would say: "That's our Chinese!"

A friend would randomly say "Confucius said"

A teacher would ask if Chinese used huge keyboards with all hanzi characters to type into their computers.

A teacher jokingly said, I would be an expert in eating dogs.

In grade 12 (roughly a year before graduating) an epidemic broke out in Germany and few other European nations. Chinese scientists figured out the genetic makeup of the specific virus and Spiegel ("mirror", a German news agency) wrote an article about how it was possible that out of all things it was Chinese scientists in Shenzhen who figured out what virus was causing troubles. Their answer: It was pure coincidence.

A student and a teacher would discuss that Buddhism is sexist because no female found enlightenment. At some point I was like no, and their only response was, oh.

During preparation courses for university another Asian guy in my course said if his family stayed in their home country, he'd be a farmer with several wives now. His new-found ethnically European friends laughed.

The week before first courses started at university for me, a group of drunk students stood in front of my dorm and called me "Ling Ling". I didn't know them.

Autumn after my first year in university, a 15 yo half-Chinese boy was beaten up in Hamburg by right wing extremists. He suffered trauma.

In the canteen a group of students were joking about how Muslims are terrorists and had several wives.

In the canteen a guy told his friends he would go to Thailand for vacation. His friend told him, he should get a Thai girl as souvenir.

A Chinese overseas student admitted to me they felt depressed because of how Germans saw themselves above Chinese and the effeminating view on Asian men.

A few German people told me, colonialism had good aspects. One of those people is one of my best friends.

In a students association which promoted social internships, they used random pictures of "poor, little African children" as advertisement for their volunteering program.

A Chinese overseas student recounted they could not join German flat sharing communities. He was denied because Chinese cuisine had a too strong smell due to spices and garlic. They didn't want that in their flats.

A Japanese friend of mine who came to my city and paid a visit to the museum was followed by a few guys who would chant "ni hao" behind her.

I joined a volunteering program in China. Another international participant was very vocal about how China is bad in so many ways. There was no real coffee. The food is too fatty. It is no wonder that Chinese men don't grow muscles. She had no interest in learning about Tibetan Buddhist art. "If it was Italian art from the renaissance, ok. But Buddhist art? Hmpf. No".

The Chinese in the organizing committee would frequently use the word 那个 (neige, "that") to describe things. Some of the volunteers would parrot them. (I am not sure if there is a relation but 那个 does sound similar to the N-word.)

Last autumn I woke up in Hong Kong to the news of a right wing party being elected to the third strongest party in Germany.

A Chinese overseas student told me she got assigned the easy parts in projects because her German was not good enough. The subtle feeling of superiority makes her uncomfortable.

A select few instances. And the conclusion: My life is good. The things I faced are pretty common for German-Chinese to my understanding. I'm sure all German-Chinese have experienced a subset of my experiencs. And they have experienced things which I haven't. I'm sure there are people who have it worse. My experiences were probably on the lucky end. But I still want all of this to end.

Alfred narrowed his eyes at his reflection. Mathias was in the hospital, so it was just him and Gilbert for a few days. Of course, this was not good on his… well, his unhealthy crush on his best friend. They were going to do all of the things they usually did as a trio, but they were going to do it… alone.

When Alfred complained to his brother about it, Matthew told him he was being melodramatic and to suck it up.

After running his hands carefully through his hair one last time (it would undoubtedly get mussed within minutes), he straightened his clothes. He shoved his phone in his pocket and jumped down the stairs, nearly tripping on the last two but catching himself on the railing.

“Mattie!” Alfred called to his brother with a broad grin on his face. Matthew turned to him with a raised eyebrow, the little smartass.

“Yes, Al?” He questioned, making it obvious he did not care one bit about what Alfred was about to say.

“I’m chilling with Gil in ten.” He plopped himself down on the couch next to his brother, staring at the TV blankly.

“Why in ten minutes? Why aren’t you leaving now?” Matthew suggested.

Alfred snorted. “Your girlfriends are coming over, aren’t they? Chill, I’m not gonna be here for long. Because he has to do something with his brother.”

Matthew narrowed his eyes at his brother, studying his posture. Then he leaned forwards and tapped him on the shoulder. “Al?”

“Yeah Mattie?” Alfred shot his brother a weak side smile and Matthew’s eyebrows furrowed even further.

“Are you okay?”

“Uh… fine, why?”

Matthew tapped on his lips in thought. “No, you’re not. Is this about… oh my god, is this about your crush?”

Alfred froze. “Uh-”

“Al,” Matthew warned.

“Yeah… yeah, it is. I just…” Alfred ran his fingers through his hair, a nervous habit he could never rid himself of. His hair was, once again, untidy.

“Al, I didn’t know-” Matthew sighed and moved closer to his brother, pressing against his arm comfortingly. “I didn’t know you were so insecure about this.”

Alfred shot him a helpless glance.

Matthew steeled himself. “If it’s this bad, you should probably tell him-”

“No!” Alfred shouted on impulse, startling Matthew away from him. “No,” he continued softer. “It would completely ruin our friendship. Can you imagine? We wouldn’t be able to hang out anymore… and do you know what that would do to Mathias? He would be devastated that his best friends weren’t best friends anymore… and you know I can’t do that to Mathias of all people, he’s had enough heartbreak to last a lifetime.”

Matthew shifted his hand so he was rubbing Alfred’s back, something their mother used to do to comfort them. “Okay,” he started in his naturally soft voice. “You don’t have to tell him yet. But Al, make sure you aren’t hurting anyone by keeping quiet, okay?”

“What do you mean?” he asked.

Matthew thought for a moment. “Sometimes you get so wrapped up in yourself that you forget about those around you.”

Alfred turned away and nodded sagely. He knew that his brother was being intentionally hurtful, but it still stung hearing that sometimes he was so selfish that he couldn’t see past his own ego.

“You aren’t selfish, Al.” Matthew bit his lip as he said so- he knew it wasn’t completely true, but his brother needed a pick-me-up. “You just get so worried about hurting other people that you don’t realize that- oh, maple, I’m not helping any, am I?”

Alfred laughed. “Nah, you’re fine. Thanks anyway, bro. I’m feelings lots better!” He plastered an obviously fake grin on his face, beaming at nothing.

“Relax, Al.” Matthew receded back to his former position. “Just relax.”

Alfred drew a shaky breath and smiled, this one smaller but more genuine. “I’ll try.” He pushed himself to his feet. “Well, I better get going! Have fun with your girls!”

Matthew snorted. “If they stop arguing for three seconds I just might. See you later.”

“Bye!” Alfred shoved his shoes on and bounded out the door, breathing in the cool air. He walked with a spring in his step all the way to Gil’s house. He tried to door and found it locked. He didn’t hesitate to pound on his best friend’s door, shoving his hands in his pockets and shifting while he waited.

When the door finally opened he opened his mouth to jokingly complain about how “Man, took you long enough!” when he realized it wasn’t his favorite albino.

“Oh, hey Ludwig! Long time no see, how’s it hangin?” his smile was different than the one that was to be directed at Gilbert, more of a side grin, like it was hanging off of his face by one hinge.

“Alfred. Gilbert said you would be coming. He’s in the shower, I forced him to take one before anything else…” Ludwig sighed in a way that made Alfred question if he really was the younger brother. “Come in, make yourself at home… avoid the kitchen for now, though.”

“‘Kay!” Alfred flounced into the house and ignored Ludwig’s latter warning, curiosity forcing him to peek in the kitchen. It looked like a tornado had flown through while all of the ingredients for baking were out. There were eggs dropping to the floor, milk puddling on the counters, and dry powder covering nearly every cabinet and surface.

“Woah,” he breathed, leaning around the doorway. “What happened?”

“Gilbert happened,” Ludwig brushed by him and Alfred smelled the fresh scent of soap, leading him to believe that Ludwig had also just showered, most likely as a result of the trashed kitchen. Ludwig started the lengthy process of cleaning and Alfred fidgeted at the doorway.

After a few seconds of deliberation he stepped into the kitchen and picked up a rag, starting to wipe the cabinets down. It took a solid minute before Ludwig even noticed he was still there, but once he did, he protested instantly.

“This isn’t your house nor your mess, you don’t have to help--”

“Nah, it’s all good! I’d be bored anyway,” Alfred said reassuringly, carefully avoiding an egg on the floor. “Where are your mops?”

Ludwig reluctantly told him where the cleaning supplies are, and Alfred cheerfully grabbed them. The two of them have made a notable dent in the mess by the time Gilbert comes down.

“Yo, Alfie! When’d you get here?” His hair was still wet and his t-shirt was sticking to his body.

Alfred swallowed and turned his gaze to the counter, where he was wiping some milk up. “A couple minutes ago.”

“He’s been here for a solid ten minutes at least, Gilbert, what took you so long?” Ludwig eyed him scrutinizingly and Alfred winced slightly.

“Ahah, sorry, man.” Gilbert then took in what was actually going on and he narrowed his eyes. “Luddy, bro, you’re making him clean?”

“No!” Alfred interjected before Ludwig could get a word in edgewise. “I decided to help, ‘cause I would be bored otherwise.”

Gilbert blinked at him. “You’re weird.”

Alfred snorted, putting the rag down. “You just figured that out?”

Gilbert cracked a smile and walked over, taking the rag from his hands and chucking it at Ludwig, who just barely caught it. Ludwig glared at Gilbert, who didn’t notice and threw his arms around Alfred, pulling him away from the kitchen.

“Oh-kay, now that we’re away from that lameness.” They stopped in the living room and Gilbert removed his arm (much to Alfred’s chagrin). “What do you want to do?”

Alfred shrugged. “We could try to freak out the convenience store owner again.”

“Nah,” Gilbert snickered but denied him. “I don’t think we can top the lighters and bug spray while wearing scorched clothes.”

“True, true…” Alfred pretended to stroke his non-existent beard. “Hmm. I got nothing.”

“I know!” Gilbert exclaimed. “Let’s go swimming in the lake!”

“Dude.” Alfred stared at him. “It’s like, 40 degrees outside.”

“40 degre…?” Gilbert blinked at him before laughing. “Oh! Alfred, you’re so american!”

He realized his mistake and rolled his eyes, ignored the heat that he felt rush to his face. “Shut up! I meant, four degrees or whatever the hell it is you europeans say!”

Gilbert laughed. “Anyway,” he said, quieting somewhat. “So what?”

Alfred thought about it for a second before shrugging. “Meh. Let’s go, we’ll stop by my house to grab a suit. We’re going to that hidden spot, right? With the swing!” Alfred ended his sentence with a yell as Gilbert rushed off to find his own swimsuit.

Gilbert yelled an affirmative back at him and Alfred swung his arms, trying not to think about how they would be shirtless and very, very alone.

And cold and wet. That too.

You could warm each other up-- he shut that thought down before it got anywhere, not wanting to get his hopes up.

Too late, he touched his face and felt the warmth of his cheeks on his fingers. Shit.

“Ready? Let’s go!” Gilbert jumped down the last two stairs and pushed the front door open, donned in a swimsuit and the same tight cotton shirt from before. Alfred followed, hesitating only slightly.

They sprinted to Alfred’s house and scared the living hell out of Arthur, his cousin, before bolting to the lake. A few years back Mathias, Gilbert, and Alfred had found a hidden alcove with a small cliff to jump off of (into deep water, it was completely safe and also not the cliff that Mathias had broken a bone on) and trees to attach ropes to. Ropes and swings.

They had to slow down to cross a street, and once they had crossed it, Gilbert yelled, “Race you to the hideout!”

Alfred won. He was a former track prodigy, and was the best sprinter in the county (maybe even country). Of course, that was when they lived in Italy for a few years, when before that they had been in America… and Canada…

“Damn…” Gilbert panted, leaning on his knees. Alfred had his shoulder leaning on a tree and was breathing heavily, staring at the canopy. “Damn, Alfred… you’re… fast…”

A smile brushed by his lips but he said nothing, eyes still pointed at the sky. He risked a glance at Gilbert and instantly loved and regretted it. Gilbert’s face was red with exertion and he was heaving deep breaths of air, his chest moving with each inhale and exhale. He had taken his shirt off at some point and his pale skin gleamed in the speckled light through the leaves of the trees.

Alfred forced his gaze to the sky again, blinking to try to get the image of Gilbert out of his mind. Shit, shit…

“Woo… wow, I did not know you were that fast! Awesome!” Gilbert laughed, straightening. Alfred snickered with him and made a few snide comments while taking his shirt off, to which Gilbert responded accordingly.

“Jumping off that cliff’s gonna be cold as fuck,” Alfred said, a mix of hesitation, annoyance, and regret in his voice.

“Bet,” Gilbert said challengingly.

Alfred glared at him. “Fuck you.”

“Are you taking it, or not?” Gilbert raised his eyebrows, obviously mocking him.

“I never said I wasn’t,” Alfred muttered in annoyance. He eyed the cliff, noting Gilbert making chicken noises behind him. He shot Gilbert one last glare before running to the cliff, building up his momentum and leaping. He flipped Gilbert the bird midair, and he heard the albino’s cackle before he was engulfed in water.

Instantly his muscles froze up and he could barely even think. The only thing his brain could do was scream cold! Cold! Holy shit! This is not normal! Shit! The shock was too much for his system to handle, and his movement shut down, causing him to start to sink.

The need to breathe started pushing past the freezing feeling he had and he pushed to the surface frantically, the frigid water not making it any easier to swim. His fingers breached the surface and his head followed shortly after. He heaved air into his lungs, his eyes bright and clear.

“Shit! Alfred!” Gilbert was at the edge of the water, at the base of the cliff. His eyes were wide. “Dude!”

Alfred tried to say something but choked on water. He instead focused his effort on swimming over to the edge, where Gilbert stood. Upon reaching it, he flopped onto the rock with Gilbert’s help and took deep breaths. Gilbert’s hands were flitting around him and he was letting out a high pitch humming noise, which betrayed his genuine nervousness and worry.

“Holy shit that’s cold,” Alfred said quickly, turning to his back and facing upwards. He had a shit-eating grin on his face and Gilbert kicked him.

“I thought you died!” he said, a hint of hysteria in his voice. The german took a deep breath to calm himself, then settled a glare on Alfred. “What the hell, man? Not awesome, okay?”

A bubble of laughter started in his chest and spilled out of his lips, and Alfred started laughing so hard his stomach hurt. Gilbert looked at him with concern and Alfred’s giggles slowly started dissipating.

“Gil…” Alfred said, a few giggles still escaping him. “I felt like I almost died.”

“And you’re laughing about that?” Gilbert exclaimed, his former hysteria coming back.

“No, no!” Alfred sat up and waved his hands, shivering slightly. “It’s just… this whole situation…” he tried to make a point with obscure hand gestures. “It’s crazy.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not jumping off that cliff,” Gilbert said, narrowing his eyes at the offending piece of rock.

“You’re getting in the water, though,” Alfred said, dipping his toe in again. It seemed warmer than before and he started sliding back in when Gilbert grabbed his arm.

“You literally almost drowned and you’re going back in?”

The incredulous tone of his voice made Alfred snicker. “I didn’t almost drown, ya drama queen. I’m fine. Get in, the water’s fine!” He slid all the way back in and shivered. While it seemed warmer, he still felt the cold seeping into his bones.

Gilbert tapped the water with his foot and withdrawed it swiftly. “Shit, no! That water’s cold as ice!”

“This was your idea, shithead,” Alfred reminded him. He tried treading water and, when he didn’t want to die instantly (though it was pretty close), pushed further away from the edge. Gilbert tested the water again and scowled at it.

“C’mon, coward, just get in the water!” Alfred taunted. Gilbert glared at him and he smiled cheekily.

“Ohhh shit. Jesus Christ save me now,” Gilbert bemoaned as he sat down and stuck his legs in. He hesitated on getting the rest of his body submerged, so Alfred slide over and grabbed his arm, pulling him in.

Gilbert let out a pterodactyl screech and flailed his arms. He smacked Alfred in the face with his askew arms, but it barely hurt, and Alfred felt proud and successful when he finished dragging Gilbert into the water.

His best friend’s head popped back up and he gasped. His eyes were wide with the shock of the water and he floundered for a few seconds before finding his footing on the edge.

“You fucker!” he exclaimed, gasping. Gilbert tried to pull himself out of the water, but Alfred wrapped his arms around the lanky german’s middle and pulled him back in.

He laughed loudly as Gilbert thrashed and cursed his name to the winds. His laughter was cut off when Gilbert shoved his face underwater, and they scuffled as best they could while swimming. Their hands were sliding against skin and it was difficult to get purchase, but they managed to dunk each other a good amount of times before they were both too tired to continue.

“I’m done,” Alfred chattered, making his way to the edge slowly.

“Your lips are blue,” Gilbert said humorously. “Looks like you can’t handle the cold, loser.”

Alfred looked back at him and said, “Your lips are blue too, moron.”

“Aw damnit, really?” Gilbert touched his lips with his frozen fingers. “Shit.”

The two of them climbed out of the water and sat on the rocks shivering. They pulled their shirts on but mournfully realized that they had neglected to bring towels.

“It’s col-l-ld,” Alfred muttered, wrapping his arms around himself. “We sh-should get ba-a-ack.”

“I think I’m warming up okay…” Gilbert murmured, rubbing at his arms. Alfred shot him a glance. “It’s my awesome prussian blood,” he joked.

Alfred snorted. “I was b-born in Fl… Florida.”

“Ha!” Gilbert laughed loudly and jeered, “Weeeeaaak.”

“Shut up!” Alfred muttered, rubbing faster at his arms. They sat in silence for a few more moments. Alfred felt Gilbert’s scrutinizing gaze on him.

“We should hang at my place. Have you seen I am Legend before?” he said suddenly. “It’s got that one famous black dude in it.”

Alfred sniffed. “No. Morgan Freeman?”

“No, he’s younger… uh, Will-”

“Will Smith?” Alfred interrupted.

“Yeah,” Gilbert nodded absentmindedly. “You’ll like it. It’s an american film, got the whole zombie thing going and everything.”

“It’s a zombie movie? Those are so generic,” Alfred said. He hated how whiny his voice sounded, but he was cold and wet and frankly felt like he had a right to complain.

“Well, sort-of. It’s different than just ‘zombies’, uh… you’ll just have to wait and see.” Gilbert started tugging him along. “C’mon, I’m not dragging you there.”

Alfred made a dramatic noise in the back of his throat and followed him stiffly, feeling like cold molasses. It was slow going, much slower than when they came, and they were both getting annoyed with how unreactive their limbs were.

“Oh my god we’re here,” Gilbert sighed in a ‘finally��� tone. They stumbled through the threshold and collapsed into a pile on the doormat, both groaning. Ludwig looked up from his place on the couch, one eyebrow raised. He wordlessly stood with his laptop and disappeared up the stairway.

The two untangled themselves to move from the floor to the couch. Gilbert slouched into the cushions and Alfred slumped right next to him. He told himself that it was for body warmth.

They were pressed right up against each other.

“Jesus, you’re cold,” Gilbert murmured. After a moment he wrapped his arms around Alfred and pulled the american closer. “Gotta warm you up.”

Alfred sputtered and felt himself turning red. “I-!” Gilbert cocked his head.

“Y’know…” he started, leaning in closer to Alfred, a playful smile on his face. “Your lips are still blue.”

“They are?” Alfred asked, puzzled. He reached up and touched his lips, and they weren’t ice, by any means.

“Yeah,” Gilbert got closer to his face and Alfred froze like a deer in headlights. His gaze flickered from Gilbert’s eyes to his lips and back again. “I’d better… warm them up…” he breathed, the warm puff of air brushing Alfred’s cheeks.

Alfred’s mind started running a mile a minute, trying to figure out the situation, when he felt a pair of lips press against his own. They were soft, like velvet, and comfortingly warm.

His brain short-circuited and he sat rigid, unmoving.

Holy shit, Gilbert’s kissing me!

Eventually Gilbert pulled away, obviously disappointed or upset that Alfred hadn’t moved. A flash of regret swept through the albino’s face and he leaned back.

“Uh… I guess I read that wrong…” Gilbert muttered, averting his gaze. “Damn… sorry, I gue--”

Before he could finish his sentence Alfred jumped forward, grasped Gilbert’s face between his hands, and smushed his lips against Gilbert’s. Less than a second later Gilbert reciprocated. Their mouths moved against one another in synchrony, and Alfred’s hands tangled into Gilbert’s hair. Gilbert was pushing them closer together by Alfred’s shoulders, as close as they could get.

Alfred almost forgot about a certain thing called breathing, and when they broke apart they were both panting. Alfred leaned forwards and pressed his forehead against Gilbert’s, staring into his red eyes.

Gilbert’s face shifted into a smirk. “Do you feel warmer now?”

“Yeah,” Alfred laughed softly, then moved to burrow his face in the crook of Gilbert’s shoulder, like he had dreamed of doing for quite some time. “But I’ll be even warmer if you cuddle with me during the movie.”

“I dream of doing nothing else,” Gilbert said, reaching over Alfred’s shoulder to grab the remote. Then his eyes sparkled mischievously and he said, “Well, I do dream of something else, but that’s for a later date.”

Alfred let out a puff of amused laughter and tried to cuddle further into Gilbert’s embrace. “Pervert.”

“Pervert?” Gilbert snickered. “Do you want to see how much of a pervert I can--”

“Shut up,” Alfred said, laughter in his words. He moved his hand to cover Gilbert’s mouth. “Turn the tv on and cuddle with me.”

Gilbert kissed Alfred’s hand and did as he was told, smiling as his unusually romantic action caused Alfred’s face to turn pink. In a spur of the moment decision he leaned forwards and placed another kiss on Alfred’s cheek, causing him to flush darker. “As you wish.”

I think the world kind sucks because people kinda suck in general, haha. I will never judge anyone personally. I may feel on the inside personal/hurt/angry feels, but I will do my best not to let it cloud my judgement of anyone permanently and it would take a LOT of hate and harassment for me to block anyone. I don’t like blocking people. I feel that is sorta like denying a person’s existence and sorta says ‘you aren’t worthwhile as a person’. And you have to be a total all-encompassing shithead for me to think that. I already mentioned my anxiety awhile back, but I’ve been diagnosed with both General Anxiety Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder (i can practically be agoraphobic sometimes and have reculsive spells both online and off - which is why i probably will disappear at some point. maybe i’d come back. maybe i wouldn’t. and if i come back, it could be years before i do. i don’t know so you definitely wouldn’t know so puh-lease do not get attached to me ;___; G/t stuff: The truth is - I mostly like fluff and nice, kind, sfw stuff. I am not shy in having characters with imperfections, but in a realistic way that isn’t bad. I mean, it’s not ideal, but it happens. like blindness or a missing limb. many scars. mental illnesses are frequent in my characters and sometimes in a criminally insane way. However, I aim to reflect reality in such sort of topics, so of course criminally insane characters would be a very small minority compared to perfectly safe mentally ill characters. But, in any case, as I said, I plan on using extensive tags this blog WILL have (some) VORE. But it is NOT the focus of the blog and I don’t really draw vore - well i haven’t really done so yet... And in writing, I tend to making a horror element. Though I am somewhat fond of  “safe” (platonic or not) vore.. I’m rather confused about it and have a hard time considering plausible within my own content. So in my writing it would be fatal and not with any main characters of anything...mostly just poor SOBs and such... Basically, it would be quality content for the vore community as it would likely portray vore as despicable and wrong. As, in a real life scenario, that would be a correct assumption.
