hi, what metal do you use for the stained glass projects? i only have leaded solder which i will NOT use lol but what else would even work with the soldering iron?

you use acid free leaded solder (so not the type you can get at a hardware store or use with electronics, the acid core sputters and makes a mess). 60/40 is the most common. The black lines on a piece are called 'leading' for a reason unfortunately.

I'm surprised people see Tadashi as the victim in his relationship with Ainosuke, when it's Tadashi the one who time and time again takes away Ainosuke's agency, without being able to see that he is throwing him unto unhappiness. I can't help but think that if Tadashi was not working at Shindo's house, Ainosuke would have maybe left or broke with the family. But he can't do that if he wants the relationship with Tadashi going on, seing how Tadashi is set on enforcing the family rules...

Hmm.. I def agree with the fact that Tadashi is not what most fandom makes out of him, my man (I mean, Adam’s man) is a 100% Slytherin. But I disagree with blaming him for this, after all the revealed info. The environment they were both raised in made their situation complicated.

I like Tadashi a lot, he’s probably my fav thing about this anime, bc he’s a dark horse, and I’m once again surprised, that so little ppl see him for who he really is, portraying him as an innocent puppy, which he is definitely not.

Now to why I think both Tadashi and Adam are victims of the dad and aunties in this situation. 

We can of course say “if only they told each other how they really feel...”, but like we can say it about any love story really. Every author knows it’s no fun. The truth is that yes, they both hurt each other, and yes, if they were honest about their feelings things would’ve been different, but as I’ve already wrote under that “toxic” commentary on YT, lets look at the whole situation from both of their point of views:

We know that Adam when he was little always treated Tadashi as an equal, he never ever thought of him as someone lower than him and after their fall out, the only reason for this “harsh” treatment (well, besides their confirmed kink) was that Adam tried to get a reaction out of him, so Tadashi would stand up for himself, bc Ainosuke got mad about Tadashi caving to his dad’s wishes and abandoning him, when he needed him the most. 

But now, knowing the fact that Tadashi was his dad’s secretary and was under his control, let’s see it from his perspective: Tadashi wanted to stay by Adam’s side, Adam’s dad implied that if Tadashi did say smth, he’s gonna be.. well, dismissed and they won’t see each other ever again. That’s what caused Tadashi to stay silent in that moment. Ainosuke instead saw this as a “he’s not on my side” thing, well, because. Tadashi won’t tell him his problem, bc dad and aunties control everything, so even if he does tell him, what a teen would do really? He didn’t have any powers back then to make his dad do anything. 

And that’s when it all gone to shit, since they both were hurt for their own reasons. It’s easy to say leave the family, but 1stly nobody explained to Adam still that he’s physically and psychologically abused by his family, he sees it as them “loving him” and sadly also loves them, bc nobody told him, that love wasn’t supposed to be like that really. He definitely feels that smth is not right and feels emotionally exhausted there bc of this treatment, but did he ever consider leaving? I really don’t think so. He feels obligated to be worthy of a family, who “loves” him.

Do you think, for example, that Akashi Seijuro hates his dad for what he did to him? No. Does he understand that he wasn’t at fault for what happened to him and that his dad instead of comforting his child after his mother’s death, who was his only safe haven, made everything worse? I don’t think he does. Like his mom gave him basketball, an escape from all that family’s obligations and strictness. After her death, it was the only thing left that brought him joy, but his dad ruined even that, saying that if he’s gonna be bad at it/lose, he’d take it away from him too. Does Akashi see this as emotional abuse? No, he sees it like “well, I have to be the best bc I was born in such powerful family, so if my dad says that I must be best at everything, then I must.”

I personally hate such parents a lot. To me it doesn’t matter if Adam’s dad didn’t know about aunties hitting his child. Like if he was too busy to notice this and have no time for his kid and made his childhood miserable, it doesn’t make it any better really. 

Same as with Akashi’s dad. Some are like “he was probably also grieving about his wife”. Emm? He was like this from the beginning, bc he treated Akashi not as his son, but as his heir. And yes, that’s different things. Same with Endeavor and Todoroki. Your child is not your post production thing.

2ndly they were too young, even if they knew about each others feelings and he didn’t feel obligated and told everyone to fuck off, they’d be on the streets now, but also Adam’s dad doesn’t seem like a guy who’d leave them alone really. Also eloping seems very romantic, but I don’t think it is, esp when you’re teens. Did you want him to sell some expensive watch and go live on Hawaii or smth? Bc finding a decent job there would be difficult at this age, esp with everyone knowing who your dad is. Chen Ke from “Antidote” survived bc he was 27 and had connections and some great friends. Adam was in high school, where would he go exactly?

Now let’s go back to now. Obviously all this time it didn’t even cross Tadashi’s mind that for Ainosuke he comes first and that he would throw everyone under the bus to make Tadashi stay with him. As we see at the end, he legit believed that Adam was planning to send him to jail and didn’t get that he said it just to shaken he up and that he knew who he’d set up for this from the beginning. 

To Adam obviously it doesn’t matter whether they’re in a quarrel or not, he would never him go. Yes, he’s mad at him, he’s angry and hurt, but Tadashi’s still the person he needs the most, he’s still the person who brightens his days, even tho he deliberately behaves like he annoys him. He always looks at him and looks at him and looks at him, but then hisses smth to hurt him. Bc he knows that he needs him, but he also hates that he needs him, bc he thinks it’s unrequited.

And that’s how their classic romance goes in hellish circles. No one wants to talk as usual. Adam is mad Tadashi is like that bc his dad turned him into a slave with no opinion, while Tadashi is scared that Adam would be taken away from him bc of his ugly family. 

Now I still think that no one and I mean no one can take Tadashi from Adam now, he is his precious. So my plan is... if Tadashi made aunties do smth against him or to get rid of him, aunties will go for sure. The problem is Tadashi still doesn’t get that he comes first, so we’re stuck in this hell still.

So anyways, my point is Adam’s heart basically sings “you got a hold of me, don’t even know your power” to Tadashi, but he doesn’t hear it, bc of his insecurities, the way he was raised and his status. But yes, he holds all the power. He’s both Adam’s sanity and insanity. No matter how cheesy it sounds he was basically his only ray of sunshine in the darkness, if you take it away, that’s what it leads to, that’s why Ainosuke-sama needs more ppl who care for him. I don’t want anyone to die next time, just cause Tadashi and Adam fought about where to put their new couch lmao. I’m kidding, but you know what I mean. And kill the aunties, pls seriously, we need to be free.

Also ppl need to remember that like lots of animes/characters are parcially inspired by some other animes/characters, also the chosen seiyuus are also very important, there are lots of stuff like jokes and references, that creators use, from characters being fully inspired by smth like “Assassination classroom” characters based on KNB, to little stuff like Levi dressed in Akashi’s uniform in chibi AOT bc Hiroshi Kamiya. Utsumi already said before stuff like she sometimes think of a perfect voice for the character and then fully forms him, we also know her clear love for sports animes. So yes, I doubt Tadashi/Kuroko thing is a coincidence and even tho someone was like “zone? is this knb or smth?” I was like no, zone is actually a common thing in sports, even tho most associate it with KNB including me, it’s not like its their invention, but there were things inspired by this for sure, and from other sports animes too and no, I don’t mean the basic sports anime tropes, I mean, like way too specific things, some character designes, too. And yes, Langa appearence and personality wise is a rinharu child for real, I can literally split his scenes in “that’s Haru”, “that’s Rin”.

That’s why I’ve said that this situation in fandom reminds me of Kuroko/Akashi situation a lot, bc same as here in KNB ppl for some reason automatically thought that Kuroko is this innocent sheep and Akashi is the wolf (but also like it was Akashi who chose to dress as red riding hood, while Kuroko was a wolf lmao), not even seeing who is in reality more dangerous and who can easily control who. It just buffles me bc it’s not some deep analisys really. I mean once again there’s a reason for the saying that the sub holds all the power over the dom. 

And like just bc someone yells or threatens ppl constantly doesn’t necessarily mean he is a psycopatic killer, and just bc someone is quiet and doe-eyed, doesn’t mean he isn’t. I didn’t think we needed to explain this to someone, but aparently we do?

And it honestly kills me just how superficially ppl are watching things these days. It really gives me war flashbacks to stuff like the last mdzs s1 episode, where ppl started to comment things like “how LZ can be so heartless” lmao. P.S. I also would die to see Adam vs Tadashi race just bc I for some reason can bet all my money, that it’s the same situation as with Akashi refusing to ankle break Kuroko, no matter how mad he is. I just can’t imagine Ainosuke hitting Tadashi in the face with a board. Like 100% sure he wouldn’t even try tbh.

15 Important Tips to Get Strong and Healthy Nails

Clip your nails regularly. Regular trims are as important to your nails as they are to your hair, says Dr. Prystowsky. But if you're keen on getting them, there are some ways to minimize the damage to your hands and nails. The main issue with a gel manicure is the exposure to UV light in the drying device, which can damage the skin below and around the nail, leading to an increased risk of cancer. To help reduce that risk, Dr. Prystowsky recommends applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 to 50 before the procedure to help block the damage, or you can try special gloves that expose only the nails themselves, shielding the rest of your hands from the harmful UV rays. As Nature reported in 2019, right now the race is on to make perovskite solar cells cheap enough to be commercially viable.

Solar cells are really inefficient.

In one memorable scene, Gibbs visits the Cedar Street Solar Array in Lansing, Mich. A representative from the Lansing Board of Water and Light tells him that the array’s solar cells have less than 8 percent efficiency (the amount of generated energy relative to the incoming solar energy). The utility has roughly 800 solar panels in the array, which can power maybe 10 houses for a year, he says.

That plant, however, was installed in 2008, which is multiple generations ago in solar cell technology time. Efficiencies for standard photovoltaics are much higher now, hovering close to 20 percent. Perovskite solar cells push that efficiency even higher, up to 25 percent. And by creating “tandem” solar cells that layer perovskite on top of silicon, manufacturers can maximize the ability of the cells to absorb light in different parts of the spectrum, increasing the efficiency still further.

Solar cells and wind turbines have such short life spans that manufacturing replacements uses up more fossil fuels than the renewable energies save.

Planet of the Humans suggests that the carbon emissions released from the energy involved in manufacturing new parts and machinery for wind and solar power are greater than any saved emissions from the facilities. “You use more fossil fuels to do this than you’re getting benefit from it,” says Ozzie Zehner, one of the movie’s producers. “You would have been better off burning the fossil fuels in the first place instead of playing pretend.”

But that statement isn’t supported by data. For example, the film claims that “some solar panels” last only 10 years, but today’s solar panels are built to last 20 to 30 years. Similarly, wind turbines have a life span of about 20 to 25 years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

A 2017 study in Nature Energy reported that the lifetime carbon footprints of solar, wind and nuclear energy power plants are just a fraction of the lifetime footprints of coal and natural gas plants. The study also projects that, in 2050, the energy involved in constructing and operating a solar or wind power plant will be just 3 to 8 percent of its electricity output.

Solar and wind power are too intermittent to ever fully replace fossil fuels.

The question of storing energy generated by renewables so it’s available when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing has dogged renewables for decades (SN: 1/9/17). But battery storage does exist: Some renewable companies use lithium-ion batteries, for example (SN: 5/7/19). And renewable energy utilities in the United States, Australia, Germany, Japan and elsewhere use battery storage systems, though so far they are primarily for short-term storage, amounting to a few hours.

In the film, Gibbs suggests that battery storage capacity — how much energy the batteries can store — is the main obstacle to updating the traditional energy grid. He shows a pie chart apparently based on data from the Paris-based International Energy Agency, which he says shows that current total battery storage capacity is 51 trillion British thermal units. That’s “less than one-tenth of 1 percent of what’s needed” for a year’s worth of energy usage around the globe.

The problem with that argument is that it’s a false premise: To integrate renewables into the grid, it’s not necessary to have enough capacity to match peak global demand — meaning, all of the world’s global energy needs, all at the same time. Instead, as energy writer Ketan Joshi noted on Twitter, an optimized mix of different renewable technologies (and some storage) can work together to keep the lights on.

Rather than capacity, the real obstacle to utility-scale energy storage is price. A 2019 study in Joule noted that for wind and solar power to completely power the United States, energy storage would need to be highly cost-competitive, with a maximum price tag of just $20 per kilowatt-hour, about 90 percent cheaper than it currently is. The materials in lithium-ion batteries are too expensive to hit that target, but researchers are developing other battery materials, such as sodium sulfur and sodium nickel chloride, that could be much cheaper.

Replacing coal plants with natural gas plants isn’t an improvement.

Across the United States, utilities have been moving away from coal — partly due to costly environmental regulations and partly due to increasing competition from other sources of electricity. As a result, many energy giants, such as Duke Energy, say they are replacing these coal plants with clean energy sources. As Planet of the Humans correctly notes, this very often means a replacement with another type of fossil fuel: natural gas.

By around 2016, natural gas replaced coal as the leading source of electrical power in the United States, according to the EIA. In 2019, natural gas provided about 38 percent of the nation’s electricity compared with coal’s roughly 24 percent.

The movie suggests that companies are greenwashing this shift by calling these natural gas power plants clean. Sure. The movie also suggests that environmental groups such as the Sierra Club, which has led the charge to retire U.S. coal-fired power plants, are equally culpable for not making the distinction between natural gas and renewable energies when talking about clean energy. This is demonstrably untrue.

Bottom line, natural gas isn’t clean, but it is cleaner than coal. Natural gas emits as little as 50 to 60 percent of the carbon dioxide of a coal plant. Coal burning also adds toxic heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic to the atmosphere and to waterways, not to mention the polluted waterways and denuded mountaintops that come with coal mining. For these reasons, eliminating coal has been (and should be) a top priority for environmental activists.

But it’s fair to say that natural gas has some problems (oddly not ones discussed in the movie), and there’s good reason to be cautious. About two-thirds of new U.S. oil and gas wells are using hydraulic fracturing, breaking apart shale and other rocks deep underground to extract the gas (SN: 8/24/12). Fracking has a host of possible hazardous consequences, not least its link to earthquakes (SN: 1/18/18). Moreover, natural gas plants can leak large amounts of the potent greenhouse gas methane to the atmosphere due to faulty infrastructure as well as venting (SN: 4/22/20).

By pointing out problems, Gibbs and Moore have said that they just wanted Planet of the Humans to start a conversation about the renewable energy industry. Indeed, the film poses many questions about the industry and the environmental groups that advocate for it. But the film offers no alternative solutions (it hints that perhaps there are just too many people on the planet for any sustainable solution but stops short of advocating for outright population control).

This “just asking questions” trope is another way that the movie feels out of date. As last year’s climate protests revealed, people don’t need this movie to spur them to outrage or activism (SN: 12/16/19). They’re already there. And they definitely don’t need bad or incomplete information with which to combat the climate crisis.

Financial markets have to fail.

During the lockdown, the notion that we can't go back to normal, that normal was the problem, has been flourishing. While I believe this to be true, I am concerned because there is little in the way of what the alternative should be and how to make it happen. Specifically, I am deeply worried because if we can't even imagine what this world - that we know we desperately need - ought to look like, there will be a vacuum that authoritarians will be quick to fill. We can see it already, with the EPA loosening regulations for polluting industries, with Blackrock positioning itself to advise the EU environmental, social and governance policies, with governments slowly but inexorably implementing regressive and repressive "solutions".

So what exactly made the past normal so toxic and so detrimental to our well-being, that this pause is experienced as a time to take care of ourselves, reflect and give a voice to this malaise. Part of the answer lies in the frenetic pace imposed by the permanent growth and increased productivity dictated by the free markets. Even before the covid-19 crisis and the lockdown, we were at a breaking point, especially as the increased wealth created by our ever-growing economy was not redistributed to the people generating it, and the fallacy of the invisible hand of the free market was becoming apparent. Resources are finite, human work output and productivity reach a point when they become incompressible but our financial system still require more growth to sustain themselves. Endless growth on a finite planet is bound to lead to catastrophe.

What drives this growth? Investors only buy stocks if they can make a profit (otherwise what would be the point?). The value of stocks increases if a company is expected to do well and has good prospects. But let us be clear, this is based only speculation and past a certain point, investment in stocks does not directly benefit the company itself since the dividends are paid to the shareholders. Money from the real economy flows into financial markets, but rarely the other way around. As billionaires get richer, they suck the real economy of any wealth it generates. The real economy has to then produce more for less to feed the profits and dividends of shareholders. For workers and employees, it’s a Red Queen scenario, where you have to run faster to barely manage to stay in the same place.

It is easy to manipulate the price of stocks, in all legality, to increase shareholders profits because they are not tied to the services or products of the company. Although I know this sounds preposterous, an obvious example of this can be found in the airline industry, which benefitted from large bailouts after the 2008 recession. Airlines used the $45 billion of bailout money ($45 000 000 000) to buy back their own stock (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-16/u-s-airlines-spent-96-of-free-cash-flow-on-buybacks-chart), thereby artificially increasing the value of their shares by making them more scarce on the market. Furthermore, since CEOs have large stock options, this was a nice little way to give themselves huge indirect bonuses. But can anyone honestly say that services improved in the travel industry in the 2010s? If airlines had been responsible, they could have used the bailout money to invest in their product, for example by improving the work conditions of their employees or the comfort of the passengers or the infrastructure required to handle increasing numbers of travellers; or they could have saved some of the bailout money to prepare for a future when travel would inevitably become more difficult; or even invested in ways to improve their environmental footprint and reducing their carbon impact. But no: instead they gave themselves and their shareholders dividends and bonuses by manipulating and buying back their stocks, at the expense of everyone else, society, travellers, customers, employees. There is no reason to believe that they will act any differently in the coming economic crisis: in the US, airlines are being bailed out by the government to the tune of $58 billion ($58 000 000 000), but United Airlines is already warning its employees that there will be lay-offs starting in October. Bailout money is tax money, it's literally us funding them, with no strings attached, no say in how this bailout money should be used. But have they not lost their credibility, and more importantly our trust? The most revolting aspect of capitalism that our current crisis is revealing is how expendable workers are to the shareholders: "late capitalism has always been a death cult. The tiny-minded incompetents in charge cannot handle a problem that can’t be fixed simply by sacrificing poor, vulnerable, and otherwise expendable individuals. Faced with a crisis they can’t solve with violence, they dithered and whined and wasted time that can and will be counted in corpses. There has been no vision, because these men never imagined the future beyond the image of themselves on top of the human heap, cast in gold. For weeks, the speeches from podiums have suggested that a certain amount of brutal death is a reasonable price for other people to pay to protect the current financial system." People who have money set aside, who have disposable income, believe it's their natural right (it is, after all, the basic tenet of capitalism) to use that money to make more money, to let the money do the work for them. And the more disposable income is available, the more money can be made for nothing, just by speculation. But owning stocks does not contribute to the real economy, it does not generate goods or services. In fact, quite the opposite: the people doing the work and producing the wealth of shareholders are being asked to make more sacrifices by working more, producing more, for equal (or lower if adjusted for inflation) pay, while the fruit of their labor gets reinvested in stocks. If that seems not only wrong, but also immoral, then the only answer is to refuse to bail financial markets out, to let the stock markets crash, despite the unavoidable collateral damage*. Make no mistake, the collateral damage will be even worse if we do bail them out: austerity, with increased taxes and fewer social benefits (such as retirement, social security, healthcare for all). Investors got themselves into this mess, it's time for them to pay the price. When things are going well, they want to keep their fortunes to themselves, but when things take a downturn, they demand that taxpayers bail them out. This has to change and we have to let them deal with the consequences when their investments fail. After all, they took a risk putting money in the speculative stocks, and losing is an integral part of the deal.

This can only be implemented by demanding changes in current laws and regulations, and it will not be easy. Governments are begging companies not to pay out dividends or using buy backs of their shares, but will this be enough? Billionaires and their lobbyists have too much invested to give up their bloated cash cow easily. We will have to mobilise and demand the change that will make the new normal different from the old one. Strikes, especially in unsafe sanitary work conditions, is a way to demand this change. Solidarity, especially for people who will lose their employment or their retirement as a consequence of failing markets, will also be required. Governments need to step in to nationalise essential services. The climate crisis will be monumentally more devastating than the current covid-19 pandemic. Are we, as a society, going to be able to learn from this warning?

Thailand's structural inability to clean up its air

Air pollution has blanketed #Bangkok and most of #Thailand again this month. As expected, the government has responded with the usual raft of contingency measures, but nothing to address the problem at its root.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's prototype air purifier which was installed in the heart of the city earlier this month generated headlines, but the device is seen as too little too late. Many fear the upcoming winter will bring a return to the nasty air quality that topped the world's hazardous breathing indices earlier this year -- and experts concur. For years Kanyarat Chaksuwong and her husband have undertaken a 60-kilometre round-trip commute from their home in Samut Sakhon province to their workplaces in Nakhon Pathom. "We know that the dust and traffic fumes are toxic and getting worse, but we have to work every day," Ms Kanyarat said. She challenged anyone who believes the government has been genuine in its policy to reduce air pollution from its major source, to try joining her family on the commute. "It's not just the disgusting exhaust fumes we still have to breathe that are pouring out of old cars, trucks and buses, but the black clouds coming out of factories that are unchanged too," she laments. Despite the Ministry of Transport last month deploying officials to monitor polluting vehicles and remove them from the streets, little attention was given to stopping the problem at the source, Ms Kanyarat observes. In just the first two months of this year, another 180,000 new vehicles were registered in Bangkok with the Land Transport Department. Likewise, while local governments attempted to implement a ban on outdoor burning, national agricultural policies continued to promote the expansion of the industries that rely on it. Two million rai of corn crops were added to the agricultural sector between November 2018 and February 2019. NO POLITICAL WILL, NO REFORM Supat Wangwongwattana, former director-general of the Pollution Control Department and now a lecturer in public health at Thammasat University, says a case study of vehicle exhaust fumes highlights the historical momentum impeding air quality reform. Vehicle exhaust fumes from incomplete combustion have long been known to be the major source of PM2.5 pollution in Bangkok. Correspondingly, stringent emission control standards have regularly been discussed as a major strategy to help cut the problem at its origin. Mr Supat cites the feeble efforts to upgrade engines and reduce sulphur content to meet the Euro 5 emission standard as just one example. Essentially, the Euro 5 standard will limit the sulphur content to 10 microgrammes per cubic metre (µg/m³), or a fifth of the Euro 4 standard which Thailand has used since 2010. "The implementation has been delayed for 13 years from our first scheduled date," he recalls. "Some businesses didn't want to make new investments, so they lobbied the government to postpone the plan until 'they were ready'." The implementation of Euro 5 emission standards, which have been in place in South Korea for a decade, is still underway here. Only last year, after three years of negotiation, did oil refiners agree to comply, and even then, they demanded and received a five-year grace period. "Compliance should have started in 2022. However, as of now there is still no resolution from the National Environment Board acknowledging the mandatory upgrade," he said. Mr Supat doubts recent media reports that Euro 5 standards may be implemented sooner. "At the end of the day, it's up to the political will of those lawmakers. They have to bang on the table and send orders down to the operating levels to start doing something," he stresses. "Since we are not taking it seriously, it will come again at the end of this year, and reoccur every year thereafter." POLLUTERS MUST PAY Last year, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's (UTCC) Centre for Economic and Business Forecasting revealed that financial loss caused by health-related expenditure and reduced tourism might be as high as 6 billion baht, based on a two-month estimation during December last year to January this year -- during the height of Bangkok's air pollution problem. The centre estimated the city's population of 15 million spent 600 million baht in total to buy standard face masks over the course of two months, and 800,000 people would have needed to visit a hospital because of the air pollution. Including medicines purchased, these hospital visits would have cost 800 million baht in total. Mr Supat said it is an unfair scenario when victims of pollution, rather than the polluters, end up out of pocket. "And when you don't tackle the problem at its root, it's expensive to solve the problem and regulate. Even worse, it is too easy for polluters to dodge their responsibilities. After all, it is the polluters who should pay," says Mr Supat. One of the measures that the PCD is using to make polluters pay is imposing strict air quality standards. However, the agency has set its PM2.5 "safe" thresholds at double the level recommended by World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. WHO guidelines say that a person's average annual PM2.5 exposure should not exceed, on average, 10 microgrammes per cubic metre (mg/m³), and that exposure during any 24 hour period should not exceed 25 mg/m³). Thailand, however, capped the PM2.5 threshold at 50 mg/m³ per day, and 25 mg/m³ per annual average. The country's average concentration of PM2.5 from 2011-2018 was 24 mg/m³, with Bangkok and surrounding areas closer to 30 mg/m³.

Assoc Prof Sirima Panyamethikul from Chulalongkorn University's Department of Environmental Engineering, who leads the Thailand Network Centre on Air Quality Management, reiterates the need for stricter standards here. "By now, the Pollution Control Department should have reduced the allowable concentration of PM2.5. With Thailand's average annual levels below 30mg/m³, we should be able to tighten our standard from 50mg/m³ down to 35, which is the same level as the United States. And the next goal should equal the World Health Organisation's 25mg/m³ standard," he says. Dr Sirima notes that National Environment Board insists such revisions are unnecessary because air pollution in the city will be reduced once a more "sustainable transportation system" -- subway, skytrains and electric buses and vehicles -- is fully in place. The board also claims that insufficient data exists to justify such a move, and more data should be gathered for another 6-7 years, during which time Thailand's PM2.5 levels will fall. Therefore, new regulations, which could affect key economic sectors, won't be needed. Such inaction is unacceptable, says Dr Sirima. The Pollution Control Department is obligated to revise and improve the national air quality standards every five years, but has done nothing since first enacting them in 2010. Furthermore, WHO guidelines also specify governments should regularly pursue more stringent measures for their National Ambient Air Quality Standards. IGNORING ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH Dr Sirima also recommends cooperation across government agencies to establish emission control standards from sources of origin and to better enforce pollution control regulations. "We should pursue a common goal in protecting the health of Thais. It does not mean we must do everything at once right now, but we have to have a goal." If one needs evidence of the government's disinterest in environmental quality, just look at the lack of money, says Dr Witsanu Attavanich from Kasetsart University's Economic Faculty. "The numbers clearly show that environmental protection is not a government priority," Dr Witsanu observes. "They focus only on economic stability and growth. In the government's expenditure budget from 2015 to 2019, economic-related expenditures rank second after administrative expenses, whereas the budget set aside for environmental protection is extremely small." For the 2019 fiscal year, the environmental expenditure budget is Bt10.9 billion, equivalent to only about 0.4% of Thailand's total budget of 3.1 trillion baht. This is just 0.05% of Thailand's GDP. This is half the amount allocated in South America, 13 times less than allocated by the People's Republic of China and 14 times less than the European Union. "Air pollution levels have remained dangerously high in recent years, and do not seem to be improving. It is because we focus only on economic development and pay less attention to environmental protection and conservation. Certainly, the economy has clearly improved, but the question is, is it sustainable?" Dr Witsanu asks. He points out that the economic costs associated with declining air quality are widely known. For example, a 2017 World Bank study found that air pollution was a factor in one in 10 deaths globally, and that for Thailand, the economic costs of air pollution quadrupled from 211 billion baht in 1990 to 871 billion baht in 2013. The Air Quality Life Index ranks Thailand as the world's seventh-most polluted country, with poor air quality reducing averages life expectancies here by two years. Residents in and around Chiang Mai should expect about a four-year reduction. In less than a generation, Thailand has moved from a low-income to an upper-middle-income country. "So in economic terms, we must not only think about efficiency of resource management," argues Dr Witsanu. "We should shift our attention to the environment and, not forgetting that our decisions today will affect the next generation, bring fairness into the equation every step of the way." I explored some of these issues in an interview with Pastor Willie Wilson of Anacostia’s Union Temple Baptist Church on June 24th, the occasion of the 2017 opening of the church’s community garden to the public. The community garden at UTBC is a partnership between the University of the District of Columbia and the 11th St Bridge Project. (1) They demonstrate why land ownership has been so important in creating wealth in this country. Today's community gardens represent a teardrop in a sea of historic land acts that worked to create wealth for some and deprive others of equal participation in the distribution of land over more than 150 years of this country’s history. As Pastor Wilson noted, “in 1860 through the Homestead Act…white people in this country were given free land, whereas we were let go from slavery with nothing but the rags on our back. The statistical data is that 53 million whites who have wealth today…that came from that free land that was given to them way back in 1860. Then you look at education. For 100 years or so, blacks were not permitted to go to the land grant colleges that were founded, except for the few HBCUs that were opened during that period of the 19th century. Without land ownership (i.e home ownership), families truggled to make ends meet, afford a decent education, and enter or remain within the middle class. According to the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB ), African-Americans account for 41.6% of  homeowners nationwide today, a rate that is lower than it was during the Great Depression.

The same is true for places with large, marginalized poor white communities like Appalachia: community-owned land represents a mere shadow of the collective aggregate wealth that is needed to uplift people that have been marginalized for generations. There, as in poor black communities in urban settings, the wealth of the land has been concentrated in the hands of the affluent few for generations, with most people forced to depend on others for their survival.

(2) They show us how far some communities came, and how far others have fallen. Not far from UTBC is Barry Farm, created in 1867 by the U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands (aka the Freedman’s Bureau), a post-slavery collective of former slaves and free people. The Freedman’s Bureau acquired 375 acres of land from white landowners David and Julia Barry to house and educate black people. What Pastor Wilson pointed out was a little known piece of that history: after building their homes, freed slaves donated the money that was left over to the project to build and develop Howard University. That history is not spoken of much these days, especially in light of the current plans to demolish the Farm, evict its current low-income African-American residents and convert it into a mixed-income community.

(3) They present an opportunity to address the statistical data that disproportionately affects marginalized African-American communities in terms of health and nutrition. I asked Pastor Wilson about some of the tangible benefits to the community that he’d seen in the years that UTBC had been doing the community garden. He noted multiple benefits: first, he said, “it’s an opportunity to speak to the statistical data that disproportionately affects the African-American community. We are at the bottom of the list of every imaginable statistic you could mention with regard to our health…here in the District of Columbia, it’s small demographically, but black men are number 1 in the nation in prostate cancer and in prostate cancer deaths. So not only do we have this garden, but we encourage every member to grow something on their back porch, on their ledge, just grow some food that you can eat. And people in an area like this, Anacostia, have not had access to good, fresh vegetables and fruits, so it's important from that standpoint, as well as to do something about their health.”

To date, there are over 1400 community gardens in Detroit, with a growing number of them being integrated into housing developments.

Yet, as Pastor Wilson pointed out, you can’t really transform a community with a garden. It may give people healthy food options or help stem the tide of bad health, but it will not change the condition of a people who have been systematically deprived and abused. We don't have that anywhere near the way we had that with the 2-3 generations coming out of slavery. When Barry Farm was built, they mixed that community purposefully so that freed slaves and newly free slaves built that community together from scratch. They took wood that had been discarded from the war and built that community. They had the skills: they were the carpenters, they were the brickmasons, they were the construction experts because in slavery, those were the jobs they were trained to do.
