"A planet of playthings, we dance on the strings of powers we cannot perceive
The stars aren't aligned or the Gods are malign, blame is better to give than receive
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose Freewill"
This song was MADE FOR THEM. TELL ME IM WRONG.

I can respect your opinions on Snyder's movies, but he is right to view Batman and Superman as "toys" so to speak. Ultimately they are not real, and as such are subject to the whims of the author. It's the same idea as that Stan Lee quote about "whoever wins in a fight is whoever the writer wants to win". If Batman doesn't kill, WHY? If he does, WHY? What makes that decision so important, and if he breaks his rule what happens to him? I believe this video answers those questions well.
In regards to Superman, he kills Zod because Zod tells him he will raze the earth to dust if he lives. It is the only moral choice he can make; Zod himself says he is incapable of anything other than killing. "That is the sole purpose for which I was born". I think lamenting these characters darker or "edgier" experiences in the movies is missing the point: they are put through these trials to show that they come out the other side the same heroes that you love. The "character defining traits" are tested in fire and proven strong. The Superman that you and many others wanted to see would have been present in Man of Steel 2: the kind, optimistic, CONFIDENT Superman that knows who he is and has friends and family to back him up.
Or Superman can do what he does every other time Zod says he's going to destroy the Earth:
PUT HIM IN THE FUCKING PHANTOM ZONE
You're right that these are fictional characters. Which means the moral dilemma that Snyder put Superman in didn't need to happen. It happened because he wanted Superman to kill someone. Superman doesn't need to kill. We already have the best "What happens when Superman kills?" story. It's called Injustice and it's a nice little elseworlds tale that doesn't need to be retold. In that story, Superman kills The Joker after he nukes Metropolis and kill a pregnant Lois Lane. It's a split second decision made in anger, one that immediately traumatizes Superman. He's so traumatized that he starts desperately trying to justify the murder to escape his own guilt. He decides that the Joker was too dangerous to let live. He just nuked a city, for Christ's sake. Removing that kind of evil from the world is good, right? It's what they should be doing as heroes? Killing the Joker wasn't an act of revenge from a grieving husband, it was a superhero fulfilling his duty. But now that the Joker's gone, he's not the worst thing in the world anymore. And if that justification can work once, then it can work again. What follows is an endless series of actions and justifications that ends with Superman conquering the world and becoming a totalitarian dictator who kills on a whim. Because he is right, and anyone standing against him is stopping him from protecting the world, thus they're evil, thus he should kill them. This also leads to the best exchange that DC comics has ever published, which I'll post at the end under the cut since it's not really relevant to the discussion we're having.
The Injustice story shows what happens when Superman kills. It illustrates why these characters who have a no kill rule hold themselves to a higher standard. "With great power comes great responsibility" may be a Spider-Man quote, but it's also the basic philosophy behind superheroes as a whole. They have amazing power, and they have to choose to use it for good. More importantly, they have to choose not to use it for evil or for selfish gain. That way lies a greater evil than anything they stop on the streets.
And that's what Superheroes should be, in my view. They don't need to be dragged down into the mud with the rest of us. They need to be an example, an ideal, of what we hope the best of humanity is.
And Superman in Man of Steel didn't live up to that. He was weak, and in a moment of desperation and fear, he murdered Zod. Even worse, he suffered nothing from that. The narrative justified it. Clark felt no lasting guilt over it. No one ever even talked to him about it. That's not Superman. That's not Clark Kent. Clark Kent is the man who broke because he killed a psychopath who nuked a city and murdered his wife and unborn child. He's the man who was forever ruined by that act. He's the man who justified atrocity after atrocity just to escape from the all consuming guilt of taking one life the world is better off without.
As good as Man of Steel otherwise was, and I do still like 90% of it, that one scene and the aftermath shows that Zach Snyder is incapable of really understanding the characters he's writing. And yes, they're fictional characters, but they're not Zach Snyder's. He didn't create them, he didn't shepherd them through the decades, he didn't create or add to their lore and history with care and respect for what came before. He picked them up out of someone else's toybox, played with them, broke them, then moved on.
Anyway, I'll never pass up the opportunity to post these pages, so:

IN FACT pushing past the incredibly boring idea that "Damian and Chris should be friends bc they both have evil parents" (which only exists bc I refuse to believe anyone's actually read Last Son and his Nightwing arc or anything w Talia pre-Morrison) - I instead believe Damian and Chris could have a much more interesting relationship if you build it around a couple things:
being a publicly known figurehead in situations that doesn't allow you privacy even within a closed community
becoming your own individual outside of your family and learning to explore the world/expand your horizons without any prior expectations
the contrast in childhoods/relationship w parents vs how similar their struggles are
To my knowledge, the idea of all the al Ghuls being worshipped within the League religiously hasn't been explored (if only to make Ras eviler bc scary cult things). In the Taxonomy-verse, a lot of Damian's au character is built upon him being regarded as a religious figure related to Ras (the League's god/Mother Earth's messiah). He's a piece of god, a piece of the Demon. He isn't his own individual to the worshippers and assassins. Everyone is a shared conglomerate, and Damian can't be any different. With Chris, he's publicly known in Metropolis as the alien boy who saved the city from Phantom Zone invaders and the god vessel of Night-wing to other Kryptonians (mostly Kandor). Damian is also known as the son of Batman and the son of Bruce Wayne/Talia al Ghul, and Chris is known as a Kryptonian under Superman's protection and Clark Kent/Lois Lane's son. Neither is allowed individual identities outside of their families. They are worshipped as something other, not human, not mortal. Their stories are fundamentally about striving for independence and identity when the world decides it for them. Damian fights bloody to define himself within the Bat-structure, while Chris always seems to give up his own happiness and individuality in service of other people. Somehow always ending up in the Phantom Zone no matter what. Damian will always keep fighting and Chris will always sacrifice himself - but they'll never be who they want to be. They can't endure being gods. They can't enjoy being children.
They can be very similar when explored this way, but where they differ is their childhoods. Chris was raised by textbook abusive parents. Zod and Ursa never cared for him beyond what use he had as a portal to Earth. He was kept imprisoned, experimented on, treated as a tool and soldier and not a child. The only person who showed him kindness was Non, but Non lacked the ability to help Chris is any way besides silent comfort after the abuse had already occurred. Damian was not abused physically, but psychologically. He was manipulated with expectations, religious zeal, cult tactics of bombardment and the constant shifting of training goals. His father cared little for him and only began to start parenting him after Bruce came back from the "dead." His mother cared almost too much, she wasn't able to do anything to help him other than just removing him from the life he used to know. Chris knows what it's like to live in fear of those who should protect you, and Damian knows what it's like to live believing you are the best and then having that image utterly shattered. Damian wouldn't know what its like for a father to be ready to kill you with his bare hands, super strengthened fingers around your skull and an iron fist around your arm. He doesn't know of a mother who drives blades of radioactive poison through flesh, a mother who calls you a pathetic whelp and beats you until you lie covered in your own blood. Chris wouldn't know a father who tries his best but doesn't see you a person until it's too late, a father who'll always choose something (justice, the city, his other sons) over you. He wouldn't know of a mother who had no choice but to abandon you, a mother whose life you know would be improved if you'd just never existed.
But maybe they find each other. Maybe even when Damian resents Chris's ability to be unconditionally loved and Chris balks at Damian's need to prove himself even through death. Maybe they'll talk about things they can't have (a home, a purpose), maybe they try to be kids for once, maybe they try to escape the shadows of their parents but go down different paths. Damian will not be Batman, Chris will not be Superman. But they hold heroes in their hearts. They look at each other and go "maybe this time, we can be ourselves. no judgement. no world ending."

Pitch Pearl ATUS AU - Part 4
shout out to my homie, @dopefestsuit who commented that they were waiting for part four.
last where we left off, Sam and Tucker realize they have powers. they realize that if they have powers too then they should be able to reopen the portal. after coming up with a plan, they seek out their classmates.
"Are you ready to get Danny back?"
the second time they enter the portal, they kind of know where they are going. it was easier when they had Danny. he had drawn them maps and explained it in detail, but map doesn't compare to a guide. it becomes obvious when they waltz right into Phantom's throne room.
he was talking to one of his officials when he sees them. he merely laughs. it's infuriating. his guards surround them, but he calls them off. he'll hand it.
"After all, this meeting is personal, isn't it?"
while they are fighting him, star sneaks off with one of the map copies and follows it to where Danny's room is. when she gets there it's empty. however before she can panic, she hears a voice call out to her from the window.
"Star? What are you doing here?"
she quickly tells him that they managed to reopen the portal after Sam and Tucker turned out to have lingering powers from the circlets, but they got caught by Phantom and they are fighting him and they need to go now. Danny grabs her by the hand and rushes to the throne room to go help.
when they arrive, everyone other than Phantom is showing signs of fatigue. he cackles. "Ahahaha! This is so adorable!" He is cut off from his monologue by Danny shooting him in the back with an ectoblast. Phantom whirls around, enraged, but when he sees it's Danny, it turns into betrayal.
“Are you really choosing these weaklings over me? It’s obvious who is going to win. I thought you were smarter than this, Starlight, I really did.”
He shoots him again. "My name is Danny."
the fight picks back up again. Phantom is a brilliant fighter, the best, but even he can't handle an onslaught of attacks coming from every side, especially with the risk of hitting his Starlight is he haphazardly fires back in the same direction. he decides to remove the hazard and go for Danny head on. however he is thrown back into a wall by two unfamiliar auras. it's the humans he abducted. if he had known they would have manifested powers, he would been a less dramatic when choosing a lure.
"This is getting old Starlight."
Danny realizes that Phantom is getting annoyed which means he isn’t going to keep trying to preserve the castle or avoid Danny anymore. he needs to end this now. Dora’s words come back into his mind and he gets an idea.
“HOLD HIM DOWN LONG ENOUGH FOR ME. I HAVE A PLAN!”
they fall back into the same strategy they used before when taking down Sam and Tucker. redirect his attention and get him down. they managed to hold him for a few seconds but its enough time for Danny to get a direct shot at his crown and pick it up.
Phantom just laughs at him. “Oh, Starlight! Do you really think you can you just wear that crown. if you Don't have the strength you’ll go mad and die.” Danny sneers at him. “I rather die than be with you.”
he places the crown up his head the pain is blinding and the energy filling his veins makes him want to rip his skin off. the crown is overwhelming and it does kill him. just not all the way. just enough for the ghost energy to properly circulate. just enough to form a core along side his heart. just enough to become new king. Phantom's mocking laughter fades into fear and distressed cries of disbelief.
“STARLIGHT, YOU CAN'T! I AM KING! STARLIGHT, IF YOU KNOW WHAT/S GOOD FOR YOU WILL RETURN THAT CROWN NOW OR I’LL KILL EVERYONE ON YOUR STUPID PLANET! STOP BEING SUCH AN INSUFFERABLE BRAT. YOU'RE SO SELFISH YOU CAN'T EVEN APPRECIATE EVERYTHING IVE DONE FOR YOU!”
he lunges at Danny and the crown but is stopped by an shot to the core and crumbles. a great king turned into a mad tyrant into a blubbering mess. its over. he won’t be causing anymore trouble.
Danny leans down to the fading corpse of Phantom and stares at the enraged expression on his face before shutting his eyes and taking a glowing green ring from the pieces of jewelry decorating his fingers. he slips it on and waits for his body to adapt to it before turning to his classmates and telling them its time to go home. nobody has said anything since Phantom started shouting. there is nothing to say anyways.
it takes a week for school to go back to normal. Danny did eventually have to deal with the consequences of becoming king and put an end to the ghosts harassing the humans. they could never seal the natural portals, but they don’t need to anymore. Danny’s ghost friends have been aiding him along with ruling and while the ghosts are still unhappy with a partially human king, they have all admitted to themselves it was time for a change. Phantom was a mad tyrant, slowly becoming more and more like the mad king he liberated them from.
things are not the same anymore. things have changed. but this time its a good change.

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice/If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice/You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill/I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose Freewill
“It’s about religion it’s about choosing your own fate instead of following a god. Nothing is preordained and the only thing you can know for sure is your own choices!! The lyrics are extremely poetic and its just a banger. Songs to scream in the shower”
Claire De Lune (Claude Debussy)
"Every single time I listen to it, I'm like. "yeah, I can handle this song right now" and then I never can. especially if its a piano/string instrument duet version."

OOOH OC FUN FACTS!! Thanks to darling @lilarus for tagging me! i tagggg @lucien-lachance @loderlied @theladygrim @cheesychickenwings and @ray-elgatodormido
I think I’m going to astonish everyone by choosing Vinari over Jura for this lmao (if only bc all of you already know so much about Jura lol)
So naturally some of you already know that Vinvin is my main character for my original work Fallacy of the Damned but she’s also been supplanted as one of my official dnd/forgotten realms blorbos too!
So onto the fun facts about Faerunian Vinari/Dirge! I'm putting it under a readmore bc holy shit this is long af and kinda got out of hand bc i've only ever really talked to Ari about Faerunian Vinari i think lmao
- Vinari (chosen name for a while) was born Dirge to a human sorceror/cleric of Myrkul and the heir to the Drow Bhaalist Clan of the Vidrus, both sects who lived in Waterdeep (well the Vidrus lived in the UpperDark under Waterdeep technically) and thus Dirge Vidrus was raised in both Myrkul and Bhaal’s churches (with a hint of Lolth too. Lolth begrudgingly shares the Vidrus the Bhaal but only because she kinda likes the funky little upjumped human. They’ve bonded over a mutual love of death and murder and apparently breeding horrific and evil monster children)
- Dirge’s official classes are Shadow Sorcerer (which she got from dad, who got one of Myrkul’s evil hugs full of necrotic energy that nearly fucking killed him but apparently did not affect his ability to have children. Or maybe it DID but Myrkul was like, yknow what I’ll allow it this time bc he needs more worshippers anyway and Gods can be freaks when it comes to their clerics breeding habits) and Phantom Rogue (which is a subclass that many rogues can pick up from a variety of ways from sleeping in graveyards or training in/by death god cults or by liches.) in Dirge’s case, the phantom subclass cane naturally as a result of being a shadow sorceror AND being raised by the clergy of TWO gods of death. (I’d def recommend looking at these two 5e classes because they are literally SO fun) she also has a couple levels in warlock, but not because she made a pact with a patron, but because she IS her own patron. (Since in 5e you can have a powerful undead as a patron, I see no reason she can’t be her OWN patron once her magic gets powerful enough) she’s a pact of the blade warlock and her pact weapon is a dagger, which I’m about to talk about next!
- her dagger was created by and given to her by Myrkul himself. Because Myrkulites are followers of the god of the dead and don’t fear dying themselves, and consider getting one of their God’s necrosis filled hugs that are almost certain to kill them, and if they survive horribly fuck them up for life to be the highest honor, i think they definitely have a bunch of different rituals and just other kind of stupid shit that will easily kill them that they do for clout, honor, and as rites of passage. One of which being getting one of Myrkul’s evil hugs. ANOTHER is going through one of the thousands of portals to Hades and the realm of the dead to try and meet Myrkul in person. Generally speaking, this is not the wisest thing to do considering the realm of the dead is not a very friendly or safe place to be if youre alive, especially when you consider the fact that to even GET there, you have to go swimming through the Water of Forgetfulness, which drain people (living and dead) of both memory and emotions the longer they're exposed to it. Vinari passed the series of saving throws to keep her memories. She didn't do so well on the saving throws to keep her emotions, but she did make it there and back with her mind (and body) in tact, and Myrkul was both mildly impressed and amused by the fact she'd acomplished this that he gave her the dagger that serves as both her pact weapon (and thus arcane focus) and her main instrument of murder.
it has a LOT of very VERY unfriendly effects, which isn't exactly surprising considering it was made by the god of the dead for an assassin. The main ones being dealing extra necrotic damage on sneak attacks, critical hits, and attacks made while obscured but the super NASTY effect it has is that wounds inflicted by it can't be healed with magic, in fact, healing magic will inflict necrotic damage INSTEAD of healing, so they have to be allowed to heal naturally, unless a mage casts Remove Curse. .....and if they don't cast remove curse with a level 7 spell slot or higher, THEY get hit with a second, counter curse! and have to roll a constitution saving throw against some necrotic damage lol.
and the thing is that the dagger is a long, thin, and slender blade designed for slipping into weak spots in armor and piercing vital organs or severing important arteries, aka meant for fast and quick assassinations. Which means that assuming the victim survives the initial attack, they're probably not going to survive for VERY LONG afterwards without immediate help from a cleric, who better hope that A. pass their arcana check to realize the wounds are cursed and that trying to heal them without removing the curse will only kill the poor bastard faster! and then B. pass a SECOND arcana check to realize that its a very POWERFUL curse and if they don't cast an appropriately powerful remove curse spell and try to go cheap with it, it's not going to end well for THEM either! and then C. better hope that they're actually POWERFUL ENOUGH to cast the spell with the high enough level spell slot needed to avoid the counter curse!
all in all, it is definitely not a weapon that one would want wielded against them lmao
- MOVING ON, Vin's story in Faerun is actually split into two parts. The first taking place during the Time of Troubles, where she's running around as a mercenary by day and assassin by night, and she ends up Joining Midnight and Kelemvor's party to go rescue Mystra from Bane (though naturally none of them have any idea thats what theyre even DOING until they get there) and Even though Kel's got his bit of sexism going on at the beginning (in that he didn't want midnight going at all to begin with either) it's actually Cyric who vouches for Vinari's skills and convinces Kelemvor to let her go too because Cyric and Vinari were casually hanging out and doing merc work together before meeting Kelemvor. Pretty much no one finds out/knows for sure that Vin's a fucking BHAALIST until book two and three. Cyric gets it confirmed by Bane in book two, and he outes her to the party in book three.
But to make a long story short, when Cyric (well not him actually, his sentient sword) kills Bhaal in the third book, Midnight teleported the party away from the ensuing blast from the death of the god. Well, MOST of the party. Unfortunately for Vin, she was on the OTHER side of Bhaal from the party watching the fighting go down because she's stuck between a rock and a hard place here because she likes the party and doesnt want them to die, but at the same time, the god of murder is one of the LAST gods you ever want to betray (or them think you betrayed them)
so yeah, Vinari does NOT get teleported to safety with everyone else, and she very nearly gets blown to fucking smithereens when Bhaal dies. but she doesn't! (though she doesn't know its because in his final moments Bhaal did some quick spellwork to shield her from the majority of the blast because he needs her alive for one of his MANY contingency plans) but even though she doesn't die, she's fucking nearly dead for almost the rest of book because while the rest of the party is dealing with myrkul's shit, she's fucking floating down the winding river. which is now polluted with Bhaal's blood and divine essence. which means she's taking a veryyyyy long bath soaking in and absorbing the fucking god of death's divine power! So by the time she recovers enough to pull her sorry ass out of the fucking river, she's very much NOT the same person that she was before she nearly got blown to pieces.
so yeah she ends up hightailing it to the closest divine staircase to try and figure out what all has happened while she was microdosing being dead, and gets there right in time to see Midnight and Cyrics chat with Ao about the tablets and becoming gods.
remember that Cyric is the one who (supposedly) killed Bhaal, whose divine essence Vin has spent the last two to three weeks soaking in.
I'm sure you can guess exactly what happens next. and if not ill tell you anyway. Vinari promptly fucking kills cyric right in front of the God of Gods. By throwing her dagger with perfect aim and lodging it right in Cyric's throat from fifty feet away.
Of course, Ao LET her do this bc he's well aware of the fact that she's upjumped on Bhaal's divine essence and he wanted to see if she'd prove herself a worthy successor to him, and which in immediately killing Cyric on sight, she did.
Of course, Ao just immediately revives Cyric bc he DOES still intend to make him a god, its just instead of getting all the dead three's portfolios, he's losing death to Vinari.
so yeah, Vinari becomes the new god of Death! Also she starts going by Dirge again when she becomes a god and ends up sticking with it. Speaking of her godhood, it lasts about 10 years because i'm one of the "actually bg2 revived bhaal just fine and according to his plan, he was just incredibly antisocial and didn't bother telling anyone he was back in action again for another 100 years" truthers, and of course as soon as Bhaal was alive again and walking into his old, now Dirge's throne room, she was more than happy to see him and give him all his power back (which is EXACTLY what he thought she'd do and why the last thing he did before dying was ensuring that SHE didn't) So now Bhaal is the god of murder again, and Dirge, now just a rank 0 quasideity, heads back to Faerun to start renacting his will so he can regain more of his power faster.
Which leads to Dirge being around and causing trouble in bg3, but this is already long enough so i won't go into that lmao.
But here have some pictures of her mortal forms before and after becoming a god. She chooses to take the form of a human in the after because being a half drow is REALLY inconvenient to getting around places lmao

Teraphobia AU [Sun character profile]
Cw: coulrophobia, teraphobia, blood, spooky
Tumblr media
(NOTE: Sun and Moon have separate bodies in this AU)
Nature
Sun is the diurnal twin brother of Moon who feeds on the emotional distress (fear) of humans
Sun typically chooses one target at a time, often choosing those who’d be described as “scaredy-cats”. He sustains himself with the fear of others, and induces this fear in his victims by taking the form of their deepest, darkest fears
He’ll stick with one victim as long as it suits, only leaving them if they become boring or desensitised
Sun strictly targets adults, as he believes that scaring young children is immoral. He’d hate to be responsible for someone’s childhood trauma
Once Sun has targeted you, its VERY difficult to get rid of him
Sun never kills anyone, as he has no reason to and finds no joy in hurting people
Personality
Sun is energetic and fun-loving! He enjoys annoying people and creating mischief. He’s also a little bit sassy 👀
Unlike his stealthy counterpart, Sun enjoys toying with his prey, often playing pranks and spooking them throughout the day
He rarely forms bonds with his targets. He believes that humans and monsters are incapable of coming to mutual understanding of one another
Abilities
Sun can smell fear. This helps him find potential targets. In fact, he overall has a great sense of smell in general, which allows him to have a great sense of his surroundings without even having to look!
Sun has the ability to sense your biggest fear, and change his appearance to match
When Sun’s rays retract, he becomes invisible. When invisible, he becomes phantom-like, and can phase through just about anything.
Strengths
Sun performs best in the daytime and dim-lit areas, Since this is the only time when he’s visible, and can scare his victims.
Weaknesses
Sun doesn’t perform well in the dark. He can’t be seen when in the dark. He can walk around and interact with his surroundings just fine, but can’t be seen, which makes it harder to scare people
Sun’s ability to shape-shift has its limits. Although he can resemble your fears, he’s restricted by his natural form, and cant stray far from it. Because of this, he can’t remove his rays or crescent face. No matter what form he takes, he’ll always resemble his original form to an extent.
Likes:
Daytime
Sunsets and sunrises
Television
Cooking
Pranks
Human foods
Dislikes:
Crowded areas
Mirrors
Abandonment
Halloween
Wolves
Extra trivia:
I always draw monster Sun as a clown. This is because my version of Y/N has a fear of clowns. But Sun can have all kinds of forms depending on your fears (So feel free to imagine and draw Sun however you like!)
When shapeshifting, Sun often unintentionally mimics Moons jester outfit. Reasons are unknown
Sun’s favourite movie is Hotel Transylvania
Sun basically has the time perception of a dog. One hour feels like ages for him. This explains why he gets bored so easily
Sun loves physical affection, and will gladly accept hugs and cuddles!
Although he rarely interacts with kids, Sun enjoys the idea of befriending them. He’s fascinated by their childlike wonder, and believes that if he were human, he’d probably be some kind of childcare worker. Maybe a daycare attendant perhaps?
Just like Moon, the crescent on Sun’s face isn’t his actual face, and is only an outer shell
In present time, Sun and Moon have a love-hate relationship for unspecified reasons. Sun doesn’t like to talk about it.
Sun has no reason to eat, since he lives off of fear. Despite this, he loves human food, and will eat just about anything you hand him!
————————————————————
Thank you guys for being patient! It took a long while for me to get this out cuz of a mixture of school and getting distracted with other drawings
My plans for this AU is to eventually make a separate blog and start making comics! I have a-lot of story thought out for these guys!
That will take quite a while though, so the blog probably wont be out for another while. Until then, I’ll just be posting little concepts and doodles :3
I’m so happy to see people enjoying my AU, so thank you so much!! Okok I’m rambling so imma leave it off here. Bye guys! 🫶

Hybrids and Humans, Chapter 4
Trust Me
Read on AO3!
Previous part
A/N: More of the fox hybrid Mad AU! I really need to sit down and plan out the plot for this...
--
Mad poked a few leaves out of the window, holding his free hand close to his chest as he hummed softly to himself, tail swaying gently as a breeze drifted in through the window.
His ears pricked up as the kettle boiled, turning away from the rogue leaves to make his cup of coffee before curling up on his threadbare couch and picking up his book to read. He sipped his coffee, setting it on the side table, and his tail curled around his feet as he lost himself in the world of his novel. But then his thoughts began to wander…
The hunter had smelled different, not quite human yet not quite hybrid. The purple eyes looking at him made his heart flutter, joy filling him at not being rejected. His brother however…
There was still a lingering scent on his person, casting Mad into confusion. He was similar to Mare, but Mad couldn’t quite place the hint of hybrid in his aura. It wasn’t quite fox, but it wasn’t quite feline. Before he could even ask, the man had lifted his bow and trained an arrow at him.
But then Mare stopped him, protecting Mad and convincing Phantom to let him go. No human had ever done that before, and Mad didn’t know how to process it. There was something about Mare that made him want to see him again…
Mad blinked as his book slipped from his hand, moving to retrieve it before pausing, looking at the purple wisps trailing around his room with a furrowed brow. His ears twitched to parse out the sounds outside, and he turned to look at the front door when he heard a twig snap.
He was at the door in a blink, throwing it open and pulling the person inside, immediately pinning them to the floor with a hand around their neck.
“Woah, woah, Mad, wait.” It took a second before Mad caught the scent, releasing his hold and scurrying off Mare hurriedly. He curled in the corner, ears folded back on his head and tail curled protectively around him as he waited for Mare to strike him.
Instead… Mare knelt in front of him, holding out his hand in a silent request, dipping his head to look into Mad’s eyes kindly. Slowly, Mad’s ears folded back up, and he twitched his nose as he carefully uncurled to observe Mare cautiously.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” Mare whispered, taking Mad’s hand and offering him a smile. “I wanted to talk. Can we sit down?”
“Are-are you going to kill me?” Mad flinched slightly when Mare chuckled, squeezing his hand and helping him to stand up. “Why are you here?”
“Honestly, I don’t know,” Mare admitted, scratching the back of his neck before choosing to sit on the floor at Mad’s feet, giving him space on the couch. “I like you, Mad. I’ve got these feelings, but I don’t know how to deal with them.”
Mad looked at Mare with wide eyes, heart swelling at the sight of him on the ground for his own personal space. He tugged on his fingerless gloves anxiously, watching Mare’s gaze flit to his hands before returning to his eyes, shining purple making him weak. He was right when he’d said he had never met a human as kind as Mare.
Mare watched the conflicting emotions dancing through the amber of Mad’s eyes, shifting to sit more comfortably as he waited for Mad to respond to his confession. The soft ears on the top of the hybrid’s head folded back before springing back up, and he tilted his head before leaning forward to look into Mare’s eyes.
“How did you find my house?” The question caught Mare off guard, catching the glint of suspicion that flickered across Mad’s face before he put up his blank mask. Mare took a moment to consider, choosing honesty over his own self-preservation to form his answer.
“You probably saw some purple wisps floating around your house,” he began, opening his hands over his knees, palms facing up. “My brother and I, we’re not… completely human. We have certain… ‘gifts’. The townsfolk hate them, fear them.”
Mad watched as pale purple wisps formed above Mare’s hands while he was talking, floating upward and curling into various shapes in the air: music notes and simple flowers and random swirls. The rest of Mare’s explanation faded to background noise as Mad grew captivated by the wispy patterns before his eyes, unconsciously reaching up to touch them and frowning when the shapes dissipated into the air.
“If they discover you’ve found me,” Mad’s voice was soft, fearful as he trained glistening eyes on Mare. “They’ll hunt me down. You know how much they hate hybrids, and a fox hybrid would be the greatest… kill.” His face paled at the thought, freezing when Mare stood up and walked toward him, ready to defend himself if the human tried anything, but…
Mare enveloped Mad in his arms, holding him close to his chest and carding his fingers through his hair. He was warm, and being held in his arms felt safe, and Mad couldn’t stop himself from wrapping his arms around Mare’s waist to keep him from backing away.
“I won’t let them find you, I swear,” Mare whispered, breath ghosting over Mad’s ears. “There is no way I’m going to let you get hurt. Trust me.”
And for the first time in his life, Mad actually felt safe to trust the human.

❄️Share a snippet from a WIP of your choosing.
☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
🌤️Share your favorite piece of dialogue from your WIP.
❄️From the currently-being-worked-on second chapter of Trio Sonata:
Meg laid a hand on her shoulder. It was meant to be reassuring, but as Christine’s anxiety started to rise, it felt like a threat.
“Please tell me what’s really going on, Christine.” Her dark eyes were wide, intense, imploring. “Are you in danger? Is the Phantom threatening you?” She paused. “Did he do something to the vicomte?”
“No!” She flinched away from Meg’s touch. “It’s not like that. No one’s in danger.”
“Then why won’t you tell me?”

☔ I've mentioned in past asks that if I were to go back to my Megamind fanverse fics (Life Is What Happens and The Storm And The Stars), there are a number of things I would change that would probably require rewriting the story from the beginning.
The biggest ones involve Wayne/Music Man's relationship with my OC Danielle Dymond. I know it's a popular headcanon that Wayne is somewhere under the LGBTQ umbrella, and I would want to incorporate that more into his thoughts and backstory, and how it continues to impact him now (since being involved with a cis woman like Danielle doesn't make him straight). I would also choose to keep the Scott parents alive, since I feel like killing them off pre-story as I did missed out on a lot of plot potential for them finding out their son is alive, and exploring how they'll interact with Danielle and her family (not just the racial and social class differences, but how the Dymonds are a loving and supportive family, while the Scotts are ... not so much). I also wasn't a believer in ACAB when I wrote the original fic, and I would change Danielle's ending so that, instead of rejoining the police force, she stays at the community center and starts training volunteers for a neighborhood watch-esque organization.
One other big plot idea for these two that I planned to explore in a future fic involves Danielle unexpectedly getting pregnant. She does want the child, so Wayne, terrified that a potentially superpowered fetus might kill her, goes to Megamind and begs him to find a way to shut off his powers so she can safely carry the baby to term -- including offering himself up for Megamind to experiment on. Megamind then has to deal with the awkward, complicated feelings of finally discovering how to weaken his former rival, but not being able to enjoy it like he once would have.

🌤️ From Katabasis (which is still technically a WIP, thought it really is almost done), the whole coversation between Kira and SilSol in Chapter 8 is one of my favorites, but these lines in particular:
“... No apology can undo the harm my kind have done,” he said, after a long and weighted pause. “But I want to offer one anyway. Kira, I’m sorry. I’m so terribly sorry. Not just for what my dark shard did. For everything.”
Kira lowered her wings, her shoulders tensing as she looked up at him. “And what? You want me to say I forgive you?”
SilSol did not answer, but the way his corona flickered suggested that was exactly what he’d been hoping.
“Well, I don’t,” she snapped. “You’ve done nothing to deserve forgiveness. You killed people, you ruined our world, and as soon as you were one again, you ran away and left Jen and me to clean up your mess.”
His corona dimmed abruptly. “That was never our intention. We feared bringing more harm to Thra if we stayed! We believed you were the rightful guardians of your world’s Crystal.”
She thought of the ragged, wheedling Skeksis who had confronted her and Jen, desperately insisting he only wanted peace. How, as soon as it was clear they wouldn’t fall for his lies, he had tried to murder Jen and had given Kira to the others to be killed. “Did you truly believe that? Or were you just too afraid to face what you’d done?”
“Would you have wanted us to stay?” His tone was still calm, but there was an edge to it.
Kira’s eyes narrowed in anger. “You could have at least done something. All you did was go home and try to forget everything.” She didn’t know this for sure - it was a guess based on their earlier story - but from the way SilSol’s corona turned gray, she knew her words had struck a nerve. “And you’re only here now because your own world’s in danger. You don’t care about Thra, or any of us.”
“That is not true!” The glow in his eyes brightened like a flaring ember. “You are not the only one who worries for Jen now, Kira. I may have been skekSil the Chamberlain, but I was also urSol the Chanter. I raised Jen with urSu and the others. I loved him like my own child, and I still carry that love now. I want to save Thra not merely because it’s right, but because it means saving him!”

A planet of playthings We dance on the strings Of powers we cannot perceive The stars aren't aligned Or the gods are malign Blame is better to give than receive
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice You can choose from phantom fears, and kindness that can kill I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose free will

"Freewill" By RUSH "Permanent Waves" (1980)
There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance A planet of play things We dance on the strings Of powers we cannot perceive 'The stars aren't aligned Or the gods are malign...' Blame is better to give than receive [Chorus:] You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill I will choose a path that's clear I will choose freewill There are those who think That they were dealt a losing hand The cards were stacked against them They weren't born in Lotusland All preordained A prisoner in chains A victim of venomous fate Kicked in the face You can't pray for a place In heaven's unearthly estate [Chorus] Each of us A cell of awareness Imperfect and incomplete Genetic blends With uncertain ends On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet [Chorus]
i dont know, can you?
funny when buds ask ‘this author says evil things can i still enjoy them?’ ANWSER: ‘I DONT KNOW, CAN YOU?’ folks ask as if someone else has the answer. no bud, you dont get to weasel out of the complications of art that easy. this is the question: can YOU still enjoy them?
personally, most of the time chucks answer is: i cant. but that has nothing to do with you.
what do YOU tolerate on this timeline? how do YOU prove love?
in other words, do you want to make that choice because someone told you what you are supposed to do? or do you want to make that choice because you stand up and say ‘no thanks’ to hate when you see it?
you dont need to ask someone else bud
