how do you have the patience to write so much? after 2000 words im just like "im BORED i don't want to write anymore". how do you pace yourself, over the course of days or all in one day?
tbh it’s mostly just practice!! i started writing in my free time in elementary school, then got really serious about it when i was in, like, grade six and tbh at the time i was pretty slow. my biggest issue was that i would, like, edit as i wrote b/c i’d always learned quality > quantity ! now, when i write, unless i’ve forgotten where i left off, i won’t even read over the stuff i’ve written already. always save that stuff for the end ! it makes for better editing and overall smoother writing, in my experience.
also, i apply the study habits i have haha which aren’t that great admittedly aha buT when i actually do use these skills, they help a lot ! i’d recommend using a timer like forest (i have the app on my phone and it is literally a godsend for homework and writing). my worst distraction is social media, so if i can block tumblr/twitter for an hour or two, i’m forced to focus on what i’m doing. sometimes writing just doesn’t, like, work, but you can always force yourself to do it anyway!! (also, if you have a phone with a do not disturb option, that setting is literally my best friend 100/10 would recommend using it a lot.)
other good writing tips i can offer: listen to good music, get a change in scenery if you’re feeling stuck at all, bouncing ideas with friends is the best way to come out of a scene block, and writing things that you like is the best way to write a lot. i can’t stress that last one enough tbh. i write the most self-indulgent fics ever haha and it makes me really want to write, even when i’ve been at it for hours.
but above all, i’d just say make sure you’re not comparing yourself to other people!! your progress is still good, even if you feel like it takes you more time than other people to write the same amount or anything like that. just remember: skills or talents are just habits, and you can only improve on them if you practice!
