Caught up on some of US Classic (women’s free, whatever men’s programs I could find on YouTube) and have Thoughts!
I did catch all of the women’s free, since that was the only one left to watch after I realized no replays would be available. (Fuck you, Peacock.) Surprise favorite: Sonja Hilmer. Looking forward to seeing more from her.
I love Young You, but Yelim Kim is so goddamn good and deserves everything.
Are my feelings about Jimmy Ma gender envy? Attraction? General appreciation of the performance ability? Fondness from the competition where he was thrilled to see his dog on camera and then swore on national television because he was pleased with his score? All of the above? We’ll never know! He and his little ponytail are just very important to me. Wish I could find a recording of the free skate.
I am Looking Respectfully at Kevin Aymoz in his black tank top and gauntlet things.
I love that Ilia isn’t just a jumper. He’s certainly got work to do on the performance element, but it’s quite strong already for how young he is (especially the short program). And once he starts a routine, he’s in it until the end--didn’t break character even after landing the axel, or at the falls in the short. The non-jump elements are interesting as well as technically good, not just filling time. Super excited to watch him grow up and pull all the skills together a little more.

Note
Now that you mentioned it to the other anon that in order to do a lutz as a second jump on a combo you'd need to either spin in the opposite direction or land on the wrong foot, wouldn't the skater get penalised for landing on the wrong foot?
The skater will only be penalized in GOE for landing the last jump in a combination on the wrong foot, but will be penalized in GOE for landing on a wrong edge.
"In combinations/sequences all jumps with more than one revolution, except the last one may be landed on either foot. If the skater lands the last jump on the wrong foot, the call will still be the executed jump, but the judges will reduce their GOE."
"The call will not change if a jump is landed on the incorrect edge. However Judges will reflect this in their GOE."
(2022-23 Technical Panel Handbook for Singles, pg. 20)
When Artur Dmitriev first landed his 3Lz-3F at 2018 Nebelhorn Trophy, the same rules were in effect. He got a range of GOEs from the judges, from +2 to -2. The overall GOE ended up as +0.24. Presumably some judges deducted GOE for the wrong edge landing on the lutz.
In the other anon’s hypothetical axel-lutz combo, if the skater uses the “Dmitriev method”, they would need to somehow land the (counterclockwise) axel on the left back outside edge in order to avoid a GOE deduction, and take off (counterclockwise again) for the lutz from there.
If using the “Hilmer method”, they can land the counterclockwise axel on the right back outside edge (which is how it would normally land) and take off for the clockwise lutz from there. There should be no GOE deduction in this case, and not even an edge change would be necessary (as Sonja Hilmer had to do in order to add her clockwise 2S to the 3S).
