I'll just go ahead and say this, since now we're apparently back to our timeline: if any of the brothers dare insult Solomon from here on, my MC will be throwing hands.

I love this because it’s such a brilliant parallel to Katniss’ last “bitter winter”, but also expands on it. When her father died, and her mother was (functionally) gone, Katniss had no hope. When Peeta gave her the bread, he not only pushed her to survive, but he reminded her that “hope was not lost”. It was the first time she felt joy in a long time, that she could feed herself with a skill she loved, that she could forage for salad with her sister, that “life could be good again”.

(The genius of Collins is that the friendship with that other guy was based on survival also, but not on hope. That’s why Katniss gets confused, because she and the other guy depended on each other’s skills for surviving, but not the hope of living. Before she even ever met the other guy, her subconscious knew how to recognise the difference. So as soon as the bond of mutual survival was taken away, their friendship became harder to maintain. There is absolutely a reason Collins didn’t have other guy comforting Katniss at all, but that’s another post for another day).

Then, another bitter winter. Prim, her beloved sister, her reason for volunteering, is gone. Her mother is gone. Her friends are dead or gone. Nothing is good. Nothing is hopeful. And unlike before, nothing is pushing her to survive. The threat of starvation is gone, the Games are gone, Snow is gone. She does not have to fight for her own survival, because nothing is threatening it. But also? Nothing is telling her to live.

Then Peeta comes back, and plants the primroses. Another act of goodness from the boy with the bread, most likely the second one she lists (first being the bread itself) when she says she’ll tell her children “how she survives it”. On the first day of spring, Peeta’s act rights her world, and pushes her to start living again, rather than just surviving.

Katniss has been here before. She knows this bitter winter, even if the shape of it is different. This time, after all that’s happened, after she’s lost so much, she needs to be pushed past mere survival into actually living a meaningful life. In CF, aka The Big Everlark Dating Book, she gets a brief look at what living looks like, even if it’s under the duress of a more-oppressed district. Katniss was waiting for Peeta because she’s always known, since that first dandelion, that she needs the hope that life can be good again.

Maybe it’s my fear of not being believed but I literally can’t do comedy where the other person isn’t being believed. Straight up, at first I would get stressed when the Human Centipede clip was going around. Like, do you know how terrifying it is to be in a wild ass date where you think you’re in danger and the waiter notices but has they have to open their mouth so now you have lie. Or the Elmo Rocko memes like, OF COURSE ELMO’S DISTRESSED! I WOULD BE TOO! LIKE EVERYONE IS TELLING YOU THIS ROCK IS REAL WHEN IT’S NOT(and like yah I’m sure there’s nuance to the situation but like COME ON).

Or Bibi from La Familia Peluche, I remember liking the show as kid and I still do but like, fuck man, the borderline emotional abuse than girl goes through IS WILD. LIKE EVERYONE FUCKING TELLING YOU THAT YOU’RE NOT NORMAL AND FEELING LIKE YOU’RE GOING CRAZY. I remember rewatching La Familia Peluche in Highschool and like fuck man, that period episode. Or to this day I remember the scene where they were serving food and she started to eat first and her family chastised her so she stops but then they make her feel back cause she already started so now she just continue to eat it and like I’ve literally been in a similar situation. And for those who haven’t watched the show, the whole shitck is that this is an absurd world where everyone works on a different level and Bibi’s the only who reacts normally to our eyes(the comedic straight man to alot of the jokes), which leads to the iconic line “Bibi porque no eres una niña normal”(Bibi why aren’t you a normal girl) that is said in every episode. Which from a dramatic irony perspective that we the audience know she’s the only normal person, makes it a funny joke, but if you think about it too hard, it’s so fucking sad, I just can’t help but not fully enjoy the show cause I just constantly feel bad for her.

Fuck even watching HALF LIFE VR BUT THE AI IS SELF AWARE FUCKS WITH ME! Like yes I very much enjoy the series! But, most of the time I’m just feeling bad for Gordon, like fuck man, I’d react the same way, wouldn’t you. Like ESPECIALLY BENRY! MAN DID HE STRESS ME OUT! I genuinely felt so bad for Gordon!

And then this slides into how I can’t enjoy alot of comedy(especially cringe humor) cause even though I understand the joke and think it funny on paper, I just end up feeling too bad for the character to actually enjoy. And it’s awful because I’ll STILL watch the shows because I’m invested in the characters not the humor if that makes sense??? (Oh, Community/The Office, the hate love relationship I have with you).

Anyway, yes I’m so fun to watch comedy with, I literally can’t be in the same room from some scenes. And yes, all my favorite characters follow the Only Sane Man trope, why’d you ask?

Putain, c'est pas trop tôt. J'arrive à cours de barres chocolatées. Moi qui croyait que les fringales s’arrêtaient après la grossesse, je l’ai dans le cul. Au moins le résultat de ladite grossesse pionce tranquillement dans son porte-bébé, enfin.

Le comité est bien garni en tout cas. La sage-femme qui est à sa tête amène avec elle toute une petite cour. Madame Fourrières alias la gynéco la plus safe qui existe, bénie soit cette femme, la nana de l’ASE qui s’occupe du dossier de Tonia, j’ai oublié son nom, une autre sage-femme, à lunettes celle-là, et deux meufs en blouse bleue qui doivent pas être beaucoup plus âgées que moi et qui se chient clairement dessus. Ça m’agace gentiment, cette procession, j'ai l’impression qu'ils viennent admirer la bête curieuse. Déjà qu'ils m’ont pas laissée assister à l’accouchement... Au moins la sage-femme devant est souriante, ça en fera au moins une entre nous deux.

– Vous connaissez déjà le docteur Fourrières et mademoiselle Blin de la protection à l’enfance, je crois.

Blin. Marie Blin. Je me demande comment j’ai pu oublier son nom, à cette pimbêche et ses discours tout faits. Oh, pleine de bonne volonté, hein, mais c’est pas la bonne volonté qui change la situation de merde dans laquelle on est. La sage-femme me sourit toujours malgré mon regard mauvais.

– Moi c’est Amel, j’étais avec Tonia pendant l’intervention. Tout s'est bien passé, elle se repose pour l’instant. Elle a géré la césarienne comme une championne.

– Donc, par rapport à Antonina… Vous êtes sa tutrice légale, c'est bien ça ?

– Depuis pas longtemps, ouais. Chais pas si on vous a dit par rapport à sa famille ?

On va pas se mentir, une fois devant la couveuse, je me sens plus si fière. Ça fait beaucoup trop de bips et beaucoup trop de tubes pour un bébé aussi riquiqui. Je passe une main sur la petite tête de Bronya, nerveusement. Ça aurait pu être elle dans cette machine. Ça aurait pu être elle.

Amel pose une main sur l’incubateur, tout doucement.

– Voilà. Je sais que c’est impressionnant, mais c’est nécessaire… Et la petite est tout à fait stable. Il n’y a pas vraiment lieu de s’inquiéter.

Donc c’est une fille. Bon. Je pensais que l’annonce du genre allait me faire plus d’effet, mais là je m’en fous un peu.

– Elle s’appelle comment ?

Silence dans la salle. J’ai mis les pieds dans le plat ? On dirait bien. Parce que binocles a l’air hyper contrite et qu’Amel soupire.

– Vous… Vous savez déjà, mademoiselle Nowak, que certaines patientes peuvent avoir des réactions très… fortes après un accouchement, surtout s'il est traumatique.

Putain, voilà pourquoi j’ai insisté pour qu’ils me laissent venir, mais non, hein, le moins de personnes possibles, c’était mieux de me faire attendre sur un siège défoncé pendant que la gamine dont j’ai la responsabilité légale fait une crise de nerfs en accouchant parce qu’elle a pas onze ans, putain.

– Elle s’est aussi mise à refuser de parler autrement qu'en polonais… Sans Zuza, on n'aurait jamais réussi à la calmer.

Elle désigne la binoclarde, qui a toujours pas pipé mot et qui rosit en se faisant mentionner. J'en profite pour la regarder un peu mieux. Elle est pas très grande, le nez un peu arqué et les cheveux tirés en arrière, ce qui la vieillit vachement alors qu'elle doit avoir vingt-cinq ans à tout péter. Mais elle a une bonne tête, ça va.

– Vous lui avez parlé polonais ?

Elle hoche doucement la tête. Sans rien dire de plus. C'est vrai que “Zuza”, ça sonne polonais.

Elle a un tout petit sourire et ça change tout sur son visage.

Bien sûr qu'elle a été courageuse. Elle avait pas le choix. C'est déjà assez dingue qu'elle ait pas décidé de juste abandonner le bébé ou de faire ça sous X.

Je jette un œil à l’espèce de crevette rabougrie et intubée de partout dans sa couveuse. Ça m'inspire rien du tout. J’ai toujours été nulle avec les noms. Et puis même si elle en veut pas, c’est le bébé de Tonia, pas le mien.

Même enceinte jusqu'aux yeux à un âge où tu devrais juste être en train de jouer aux Legos et de t'inquiéter de tes devoirs de maths, elle arrivait encore à me sourire. À faire des blagues. À me parler de films qu’elle voulait voir. À s'extasier sur mon bébé à peine né dont je savais même pas quoi penser. Je comprends pas comment on peut ne pas l'aimer. Je comprends pas les messages sans réponse envoyés à Eunika pour lui dire de venir, putain, c’est ta petite sœur quand même, pour qu’au final mes SMS s'envoient même plus. Bloquée. Elle part dans des explications sur la suite, le peau à peau, les soins, l’allaitement, comment je peux demander de l'aide pour surveiller la santé de Tonia et d’Ada, et puis déclarer la petite à la mairie, je l’écoute à peine. Trop crevée. Épuisée d'avance à l’idée que je vais devoir demander de l’argent à mes parents. Que mon daron le donnera sans problème, mais pas avant que ma mère m’ait copieusement engueulée et traitée d’incapable.

Zuza pose une main sur mon épaule. Je la laisse faire quelques secondes, puis je la repousse mollement. C’est pas grave. Je me démerderai.

Me suis toujours très bien démerdée toute seule.

Hey you know that time when Ashley rescues Leon from the cage and he softly asks her to drop down so he can catch her? Well there's a ladder up where Ashley was, it would've been more convenient for her to get that so that he can also easily access that floor and yet he still asked for that... Leon absolutely saw that ladder and ofc he just wanted an excuse to hold her, like the way he was smiling looking at her in that moment C'mon.

Huh!! You know, I didn't even think of that.

But it makes sense now that you've said that, because my initial reaction the very first time I watched that scene and heard him say that was a brow-furrowed, taken aback "uhhh..."

Because there's just something about the way that Nick delivers that line that felt very reminiscent to me of like... the kind of way you would try to bribe a child? LMAO like "I'm going to offer you a thing that I already know you like as a reward for doing something for me." That kind of tone.

I still kind of feel that way when I hear it, too. Like it feels very much like "hey~ I'm deliberately offering this because I know you like it~"

And it always seemed so weird to me tonally, because it was like ... Leon, she already did the thing, you no longer have to try to bribe her, you NEVER had to bribe her, what are you even trying to accomplish LMAO

But to think that he was actually projecting in that moment makes it make so much more sense. RE4make does a lot to spotlight the way that Leon self-isolates and how incredibly fucking lonely it makes him as a result.

Like. Examples of Leon self-isolating in RE4make would be:

in the intro where he talks about how military training kept him from worrying about the s-word that he refuses to say or even acknowledge (Sherry)

him basically refusing to talk to Luis when they're chained up together, even though Luis is clearly trying to be friendly at first

Ada having to pull a conversation out of him on the boat because he won't volunteer his thoughts or feelings to her

KEEPING HIS PLAGA A FUCKING SECRET LMAO DEAR LORD, LEON

It's hardly an exhaustive list, but. You get it.

And the only person who he ever lets through that barrier is Ashley, even though it scares him to do it at first. (He won't even say "yes" out loud when Ashley asks him "you too?" re: his plaga, and his tense, terrified nodding is literally everything oh my god)

But it could have only ever been Ashley, because it all goes back to that very first time he caught her out of that church window and just held her. I find it so interesting that we don't see his face during that time where he just stands there, holding her, before he even turns his head to look at her. I've talked about this before, but he was very likely having A Moment there, because this was probably the first time in six years that he's held someone. It's the first truly vulnerable moment he has, and he has it completely involuntarily.

So then we go back to the scene in question, and you have to imagine the sheer terror and anxiety that was probably coursing through him the entire time she was out of his sight -- because all he could do was wait, and there was no way of knowing how long he'd be waiting or how long would be too long. And the whole time his brain was probably just going "she's dead she's dead she's dead she's fucking dead she's fucking DEAD and you killed her, you killed her by getting caught, you fucked this up like you always fuck it up and she's fucking dead" and to be completely fair to Leon's anxiety, in my first playthrough, she absolutely was fucking dead. 100%. over and over again. because my stupid ass was literally too stupid to realize that her lantern can be used defensively.

And then the sheer overwhelming relief when he sees her again, alive and well and about to save his ass.

Of course he would want to hold her. Of course he would. And, in OG, if you remember -- he did. He gave her a full-on, real-ass hug after her section in OG.
