Why The Dungeon Meshi Adaptation Worked So Well
The final episode of Dungeon Meshi season 1, (ep. 24) is like if you took all the best parts of the series so far, all the elements that make it what it is, arranged them all into a luscious charcuterie board, and scraped the whole thing into your mouth in one go like the hungry little bastard ye are.
Series director Yoshihiro Miyajima has shown his dedication to the story and ability to stay true to the source material while enhancing the most important elements and making adjustments when needed to better fit the medium, and that's on full display here with the final two anime original scenes that hint toward the future of the plot and take what would have been a good but not amazing ending for the season and turn it into a great one.
As well as Nobutoshi Ogura's storyboards, whose symmetry and point-of-view and reflection shots always add a touch of foreboding and personality to what's already there in the manga.
Or the addition of color to the scene in the tram where the deep green benches and warm orange glow of electric lighting gives it the comforting atmosphere of respite from the hectic action that came before it -- or a calm before the storm (?)...
But most obvious to me in particular was they carved out a spot for many of the eccentric key animators who have defined the visual style of the show (and who I've pointed out specifically in past episodes of my breakdown series) to go nuts and do what they do best.
Ichigo Kanno's bombastic action with stylized character designs and insanely detailed wrinkles and shadows:
Atsushi Yoneda's clean line work and uncomfortable realism:
Haruki's character acting and subtlety:
Despite the slight awkwardness of having to finish off the changeling plot in the first half, this really is a culmination of everything that's come before and a great end to the season.
There's a whole lot more where this came from, and I get a lot more into the details of the animation in this video where I broke down the entire episode in detail, so if that's something you're interested in, check it out!

Thank you for reading, and double-dog-thank you if you've been here through this whole series -- I had just started trying to figure out how to use tumblr when I started making these breakdown posts and the response has been amazing both on here and on youtube, so thanks!

Been watching Lupin the Third Part 4 with a friend recently. Always wanted to dip my toes into the series and I heard blue jacket is the major common entry point for the franchise outside of Cagliostro. It's been... An interesting experience. More of a mixed bag than I was expecting. I Like the designs and the linework alot but the goddawful art direction drags it down like hell for me. Some episodes can be a ton of fun and others feel like they drag on for an eternity. A real unhappy medium between "goofy fun lupin" and "serious lupin" without the nuance to make the two co-exist with each other in a natural way. Basically, there's too much talking in my show that should be about thieves stealing shit and looking cool while doing it.
The show overall feels really low energy to me, but this scene from episode 18 was a nice little wake up call. Blue jacket is conservative with its animation, instead choosing to focus its efforts on maintaining consistency with its designs instead, but this sequence throws that approach straight out the window. Animated by Yoshihiro Kanno: these cuts are his usual bread and butter: Angular drawings accentuated by that low drawing counts on 3/4s... Just straight up raw as hell!

HARD AGREE with all of the above!! for those unfamiliar, it is basically a "moving art" piece set to music, a collaboration between director Mamoru Oshii and my perennial fave artist Yoshitaka Amano, composed hauntingly by Yoshihiro Kanno. one of those pieces of art that you watch once and then have stuck in your brain for the rest of time. i can't recommend it highly enough, and if you're so inclined, you can in fact watch it right now (here's a translation of the very minimal script).
dailymotion
Aquila, this is very silly and pointless but just now, out of nowhere, the thought occurred to me to ask you whether you'd ever seen Angel's Egg. You may even have blogged about it before and my memory is just super terrible (it is), but on the off chance you had NOT seen it I needed to make you aware of it because I think you'd dig it very much. Anyway, have a great rest of your day!!
this isn't silly or pointless at all! AND I LOVE ANGEL'S EGG SM it's one of my fave lesser known animes and the perfect example of "no plot, just vibes and gorgeous visuals"
