To the online autistic community,
On the off chance that you see this, I want to thank you all. Thank you for being brave enough and dedicated enough to share your experiences with complete strangers. Thank you for putting into plain, easy-to-understand terms how the terminology applies to real world situations; how stimming can be anything from tapping, playing the same song on repeat, any repetitive thing to release that pent-up energy, how sensory issues aren't the result of being melodramatic and fussy (just a couple of examples).
Thank you for helping so many others - including me - see that we aren't defective humans, that "normal" is not equivalent to being whole.
Thank you for being accepting of those of us who are yet undiagnosed (and who may stay that way for a while because the sources are often out of reach), helping us to feel like we belong.
Thank you for setting such wonderful examples of grace and love.

Long story short though, it’s any time you camouflage your autistic traits which can be anything from scripting (pre-planning phrases and conversations instead of letting them happen authentically), suppressing your stims (then inevitably melting or shutting down), acting out “neurotypical behaviours” to stand out less (I’d usually copy the way other people stand or walk, instead of doing it the way I wanted to), forcing yourself to eat unpleasant foods, and pretending your sensory issues don’t bug you (I’d make conscious efforts not to flinch or squint in unpleasant environments, something I had no problem doing when I was younger, because it made me look weak, never mind my discomfort). I’m sure there’s more I didn’t cover, but that’s the gist. It’s a pretty unconscious decision to mask (in my experience), and it’s a bit like pattern recognition. You realize that different behaviors cause different reactions in people, and, because you’re unaware that you’re autistic (and therefore have every right to act the way your body wants to), you just cultivate the behaviors that get you approval, develop a lot of self control to deal with what doesn’t get you approval, and go with whatever will make you into less of a target or cause less negative reactions. Consequences (in my case): you stay undiagnosed for years, probably develop physical and mental issues from the constant people pleasing and reigning your body in all the time when it wants to do something. (in my case I’d get a lot of headaches and migraines, muscle tension, anxiety, sweaty palms, and depression), and melt down or shut down quite regularly (almost every day when I was a teenager, less often during university when I had my own space, but still pretty often, very seldom after self-diagnosing as an adult in my late twenties and actually getting coping tools like stim toys and weighted products). And its a habit by the time you’re an adult so it’s tough to unlearn, but extremely rewarding if you’re in a supportive environment. Other people might not experience it quite the same, but that’s how it went for me (I find it’s easier to understand some of the autistic issues people go through when they’re put in context - saying that masking is “hiding autistic traits” isn’t a very helpful definition without the “how” or some sort of explanation).

I don't understand it, and I don't know if it's a me-thing.

Hey! One of your followers on anon here. I've started to suspect recently that I have autistic traits to various degrees so I'm sort of monitoring myself to see how that develops (my dad is definitely undiagnosed autistic) but I also don't want to send this ask as an actually autistic person, just to be clear. Anyway, I was wondering if I could ask your advice or see if you knew some good webpage that might help on something. So today some plans changed unexpectedly when I'd gone to quite /1
a lot of effort to arrange my day to fit them in and make it work. There was a misunderstanding in a group chat and I thought something was happening that it turned out was cancelled but there was absolutely no explicit discussion of it. Anyway, I got really angry and upset when I found out and it's hours later now and I had a really nice rest of the day so I should be fine but I'm not and I don't seem able to get over it. Now I know there are many other reasons why this has affected me but /2
I've never been good with change, especially unexpected changes to plans - from childhood it was kind of a joke in my family. And I'm just wondering how much this is me being unreasonable and how much an autistic thing (I don't need to keep strictly to specific daily routines ) and whether there were any strategies to deal with these kinds of situations because I'm too hold to get this upset about plans being suddenly cancelled! So having difficulty with change, especially unexpected change, is a very big thing with autistics. I definitely relate to this 100%, I've been through pretty much that exact situation soooooo many times and it's so frustrating/exhausting/upsetting. And especially as you say there was no explicit discussion of it, that makes it even worse, because you've prepared yourself for it in your head, you've built yourself up to it (with whatever emotions that might include, and if it was a social thing then this is already something an autistic person will usually need to mentally prepare for more than an allistic person), and it's part of your plan for the day. Add to that that it was on the day of, and it's no wonder you're upset about it. I definitely don't think you're being unreasonable - that's hard to deal with.
I also don't need to keep to specific daily routines necessarily (and certainly not strictly) but I definitely have the same issues with sudden changes of plan because, like...it's just upsetting? I don't know how else to explain it to that, apparently it's an autistic thing and allistics don't find it (as) upsetting, but for me it's a totally reasonable thing to be upset about.
As for advice on how to deal with it...that's definitely something I still struggle with myself. I'm glad had a nice rest of the day, because you can focus on that and be glad/proud that you managed to have a nice time anyway. But also, try not to feel bad for feeling bad. Your feelings are totally valid. I think this is what helps me most in this kind of situation (although I still struggle sometimes) - I know there's a good reason why I'm feeling this way, and the whole thing has exhausted/upset me, and instead of telling myself I shouldn't feel that way, I just let myself feel it. And rest.
As for webpages etc to direct you to...I honestly mostly just hang out in the #actuallyautistic tag on tumblr (which you should definitely check out, even if you're not ready to identify as autistic yet - and even if you're not, you can still post in the tag as a questioning autistic if you feel that'd be useful)
As for particular people/pages to follow, here on tumblr there's loads, but @adultingautistic is one I'm finding really helpful atm.
On YouTube I've been watching a lot of YoSamdySam, who's an autistic female YouTuber in her 30s who got diagnosed last year. Her videos have been really helpful in finding out about more autistic stuff I didn't necessarily know was autistic stuff to relate to.
She's also on Instagram (same handle), some other good ig accounts to follow if you use insta are rhiannontheautie, autienelle and autistictyla, among others (if anyone has any good autistic instas to recommend pls do btw, I've only recently started following autistic people on there)
For actual websites, there's the National Autistic Society (the main autism charity in the UK), whose website was pretty useful when I was looking into getting a diagnosis (I'm on my way now!) and there's also ASAN and Autistic Women and Nonbinary Network (who I've recently followed on Facebook), which are both really good (both US based as far as I'm aware). You probably know this, but avoid Autism Speaks!
I hope this was helpful and sorry it's so long! I wanted to try and help as best I could so I tend to ramble on (especially bc I don't get autism qs very often, I guess since I'm not an autism-specific blog - always happy to help out though!)

etude house's sunprise mild sunscreen spf50+++ 🌥
finding sensory-okay skincare products has been a life-long journey. since i was a wee baby any sort of lotion or cream or balm has been a sort of a nightmare and has taken some getting used to even when not. as well as my autism-related sensory needs i also have very sensitive skin (allergic to everything and also eczema). sunscreen is probably THE hardest skin product to find-they usually always smell like banana or coconut for some reason? and tend to leave a sludgy white cast no matter how hard you rub. here enters my GOD TIER sunscreen, sunprise! it smells like nothing (as it should be)! it absorbs quite easily into the skin, and it does not make you look shiny. there's two different textures too so you can find the best one for you: watery and airy. airy is my fave at the minute but i would recommend either because honestly spf 50+++ and it feels creamy and delicious and light? 10/10
psa: everyone's sensory and accessibility needs are different but i think it's helpful to get recs from neurokin :) i found this recommendation through a youtube video by @yosamdysam and i have never looked back! my autistic flatmate also tried on the other day and was impressed!

World Autism Awareness Day is big bucks these days, and organisations, businesses and even government buildings around the world now “light it up blue” for autism awareness. While pretty blue buildings and monuments are undoubtedly pleasing from a sensory perspective, this year I urge you to reconsider your support of their campaign. Here’s why.
We are already “aware” of autism - what autistic people need from society is more widespread education about our neurological differences, and willingness from the neurotypical majority to accommodate us in situations they may never have considered before as “unfriendly” to autistic people.
No amount of fundraising, puzzle piece t-shirts or baking blue cupcakes is going to change the fact that we live in a world designed at almost every turn to accommodate neurotypicals, with very little thought to improving the lives of actually autistic people, especially autistic adults.
