The Bill - Series 1
This should have been a 12-episode series, however it was cut short to 11 by the industrial dispute between Thames and a technicians' union meaning only 11 were completed by the time it went to air. The final 12th episode was rewritten to become the final episode of series 2 instead (The Chief Supers Party)
The strike led to an alteration in the order of the series airing for everywhere in the UK that wasn't London. In the London 'Thames' offices, members of the management aired episodes 2 and 3 (A Friend In Need and Clutching At Straws) in their usual timeslot themselves after the technicians had walked out. However at the other ITV companies (Tyne Tees/Yorkshire etc), the technicians refused to play any Thames Television programmes so episodes 2 and 3 aired at the end of the series after The Sweet Smell Of Failure.
The 'station' was a former cigarette packing warehouse in Wapping on the corner of Pennington St (the cobbles in the credits) and Artichoke Hill. It was so small that the offices doubled as production offices. Using an actual building to film in; although rare in the 80s; rather than a set allowed a feel of realism because the cameras could follow actors out of the station and onto the street.
Karen England and Paul Page Hansen are the credits 'walking feet'. They appear as extras in the first series.
Jon Iles (Dashwood) and Tony Scannell (Roach) were only supposed to be in 2 episodes. The actors were so well-liked on set that they remained.
Larry Dann was only given the job as Peters the day before filming of series 1 began because the original actor kept forgetting his lines.
Robert Pugh refused to commit to a series so Galloway was recast and John Salthouse joined the cast.
Peter Ellis originally auditioned to be in CID but it was thought that he was too old. However, TPTB wanted to keep him on board so they cast him as Superintendent Brownlow.
Peter Dean's character, Sgt Wilding, was changed to Eric Richard's character, Sgt Cryer. In the time between the pilot and the series, Dean had joined EastEnders and couldn't commit to The Bill.
Taffy undergoes a complete name change from Dai Morgan to Francis Edwards. In Woodentop he gives his first name as 'Dai' which is Dafydd or David.
I know it's the 80's but it's jarring just how many are smoking and the amount of moustaches - and that's just the women!
They're still known as Uniform Oscar as they were in Woodentop.
Chris Ellison appears in 3 episodes (one this series and two the next) as 'Tommy Burnside' rather than his identical twin brother (!!) Frank as he becomes. Tommy is nothing like Frank, he's more a weedy pain in the arse.
Tumblr media
Funny Old Business: Cops And Robbers
Sgt Bob Cryer arrives at work at 6.25am to find a prisoner being loaded into an ambulance after an epileptic fit. Right from the off Bob is shown as warm and well respected. He greets everyone the same, be it CID officers or the cleaner or a secretary (both of whom he says hello to by name). Sgt Alec Peters explains that the station doctor passed the man off as drunk only when he was brought in by Reg and 'PC Burton'. The doctor could be in quite some hot water...
Jim is clearly more at ease now, however, it's not stated in canon how long has passed since Woodentop. Best guesstimates are approximately 1 to 2 months given Woodentop mentioned school holidays would start soon in the briefing and Bob says that the kids are about to return to school. Both Dave and June bring up the youth that Jim clipped round the ear, Viv calls him 'The New Boy', Jim still refers to Hendon exercises as his experience of riots and rough arrests and he is classed as a new face at a cafe uniform frequent when on the beat. Having said all this, Jim makes his first arrest in this episode so it may be even less time!
Jim and June sort of flirt over how much sugar Jim has in his tea. He's a thoroughbred don't you know 😉. Taffy tells JimJim that he reckons June rather fancies him. Jim is not impressed and tells Taffy off for being crude. He insists he doesn't fancy June, that she's still getting over being messed around by Dave and he'd never get involved with anyone from the job. (*cough*)
The series starts to set Taffy up as a bit of a grump from episode 1, a far cry from the "Cheeky Leeky" he was in Woodentop. He has good reason here though as the National Front has been given the go-ahead to march through Sun Hill which means all leave has now been cancelled until further notice. It was due to be June's first weekend off in months so she's doubly unimpressed at JimJim's reasoning that it's the price of democracy. Things have not improved at all between Dave and June. There is however another female PC (not just the unnamed extra Alec 'coorrrrr'ed' at) as Viv has arrived!
Roy has learned from his mistakes from Woodentop and is attending a uniform briefing. He finds it absolutely riveting.
Tumblr media
Roy tells uniform to keep an eye out for properties with new double glazing as CID believes they're being targeted in burglaries. He warns them not to touch anything but to remain on scene until CID arrives if they come across one. Bob and Roy have more of a jovial frenemy relationship than Jack and the old Roy did.
"Sometimes Roy, only sometimes, you can be almost human!" Bob is amused when he takes a burglary to Roy that matches the MO that he'd asked uniform to look out for. Roy actually thanks him - now there's a first! Reg takes a man through to see Roy. Later Reg complains to June that Bob is a nosy old git - oh the irony! 😂 "A good Sgt knows everything that goes on in his nick."
Three months of work are paying off for Roy - a team of the same lads from the same company carried out work replacing the windows and doors of a large number of recently burgled properties. The firms managing director tells Roy that the keys are taped to the new doors to avoid getting mixed up - they could easily be taken and made copies of and it would explain why there are no other signs of entry. They wait 4-6 months and then return to the property, letting themselves in by the front door.
Uncle Bob is not too happy to find Jim Jim and Taffy having a water fight in the men's loos after a messy arrest. "Bleedin' Woodentops." he sighs as he watches them go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
June claims Bob won't let her and Viv patrol when the National Front are marching through Sun Hill, claiming that he's such an old mother hen sometimes (again - the irony!). Viv asks her what she thinks of Jim. She reckons he's a bit tasty but they're interrupted by a man reporting that he'd had his pockets picked before June can reply.
Dave is guarding the door of the burgled house, waiting for Roy to arrive. There's a kid who keeps asking them what they're doing. At first they ignore him but Dave tells him in such a quiet and indirect way that he's 'looking for fingerprints' it does make you wonder whether he's just a local kid they allowed to watch 😂 Especially when Roy literally lifts the kid up and moves him aside and they all ignore him for the rest of the scene.
DS Tommy Burnside appears for the first of his three appearances before he becomes DI Frank Burnside in series 4. There's no love lost at all between Tommy and Bob. Tommy insists he'll wait for Roy to return. Unfortunately, Jim's first arrest is a snout of Tommy's and he wants Roy to let him off. Bob tells him it's too late - he's already been nicked and charged. "That's what I like to see, Bob. Co-operation." "Bloody Superstars!"
Roy tells Tommy it's too late as his snout is already in the system. Tommy bluffs that his governor - an old acquaintance of Roy's - won't be happy. Roy pulls him up on it immediately and throws him out of the office. Tommy begs him for a favour and even says please. He explains he's due a result from the snout and the arrest compromises it. He promises they can have him back within a few days. Roy allows him to be released as long as he remains Sun Hill's body. He talks Bob into bailing him for a couple of days because 'he owes him one as does Jim. (In Woodentop this was Jack Wilding rather than Bob who wasn't in the episode). He tells him to bail him whilst 'inquiries are made about the property found in his possession'. "You've got all the answers."
Tumblr media
Uniform have been trying to catch a group of pickpocketers for quite some time and so far remain unlucky. Bob and Tom are shocked when a well-to-do man arrives having made a citizens arrest of another man who has badly bleeding fingers. The doctor is called for and it transpires that the prisoner from that morning has passed. The well-to-do man accuses the other of picking his pocket and shows the officers some fish hooks sewn into the lining of his jacket that the man had snagged his fingers on, making them bleed profusely.
Charles and the doctor are old friends and he tries to reassure him that it wasn't his fault. He tells the doctor that a few years ago a woman died because of his actions - or rather his inaction. He reminds him that they are human and that everyone makes mistakes and they just have to find a way to live with it. From what he understands 99% of doctors would have made the same diagnosis with the evidence at hand. The doctor blames himself, claiming it's unforgivable as he classifies it as outright neglect.
Outside in the car, Tommy shows more of a Frank reaction to his snout after he'd had to grovel and eat humble pie to get him bailed. The snout snivels that it won't happen again and is scared of him. What makes it worse for Tommy is that his snout was caught by "A bleedin' Woodentop who's still on probation!", telling him that it'd make him about as useful to him as a one-legged man in an arse-kicking contest." As they drive by Jim and Taffy, the snout sticks his fingers up at Jim, little knowing he'll be returned to Sun Hill by Tommy to be charged in a couple of days.

Not exactly our usual post this one. If you have come here hoping for some more stories of the cock up's we have made. Or a review of a funfair manufacturer. Then I can only apologise. The only connection we have with the star of this post, is that we are now based in Yorkshire. Oh, and I have a pilots licence, though not for rotary craft (helicopters). Most of us drive. Some of us quite a lot. A split second mistake could be disastrous, leaving any of us with serious injuries, possibly life threatening. At times like that we are quite likely to need these guys. So letting everyone know about them is always worthwhile. History Of The Air Ambulance The first air ambulance service started in 1933. With a flight from Wideford Airport in Orkney. A night time flight was made from the same location in February 1939 using car headlights to help during the take off and landing. The aircraft, registration G-ACEW was a General Aircraft Monospar. This was a fixed wing aircraft (think aeroplane) rather than the more common helicopters you see today. Both types of aircraft have their advantages. Fixed wing tend to be faster and have a longer range. Heli's the ability to land in small spaces such as on a minor road, or in an industrial estate. Emergency Air Ambulances Generally the modern service is based on helicopters. These are used to respond to medical emergencies in support of land based ambulances. Nearly all of them are charity funded. With the charities either owning the aircraft directly, or contracting in private service providers. The staff are usually seconded from the NHS and local ambulance services. There are a surprising number of Air services around the UK covering most of the country. Yorkshire Our local service was established in October 2000. Currently they operate two Airbus H145 aircraft. Like most of the services they are reliant solely on the donations of individuals and organisations. Originally developed between Airbus and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The craft is basically the front end of Eurocopters EC135 and the rear of a BK117 C1 helicopter. A previous joint production between the two companies. Nostell Priory Base The charity was originally based in Nostell Priory, an estate in Yorkshire that was purchased by the Winn family in 1654. A family that originally made its fortune in the textile trade in London during Tudor times. The first active heli, was based at Leeds/Bradford airport, where overnight maintenance facilities allowed a high state of readiness. A new operations centre was built and became operational at Nostell in 2013, including a hanger and aircrew accommodation and the aircraft moved to that base. A second aircraft and base was opened in Sheffield in 2007, but closed a year later. With the aircraft being rebased first at Bagby in Thirsk, then eventually sharing a base at RAF Topcliffe with the 645 Gliding Squadron. There are landing pads for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at most of the major regional hospitals including Leeds, Hull and Middlesbrough allowing high speed patient delivery straight to casualty. Photo Copyright of Wehha licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. Richard Hammond One of the services most high profile cases was the high speed crash suffered by Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond at Elvington airfield. Hammond was driving a jet powered drag car called Vampire, powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Orpheus turbojet engine, when he crashed at 319 MPH. He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary by the aircrew and spent five weeks recovering, including two weeks in a severe coma. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance relies entirely on charity donations. head over to their website and check out some of the merchandise on sale to support their operations. I finished watching Cornwall Air 999 and it was pretty good, but overall probably not as good as Helicopter ER. Most of the call outs were for old people who've fallen over, due to the demographics of Cornwall, but still... just a tad more boring than Yorkshire.
I started watching Saving Lives At Sea (about the RNLI) which could've been good were it not for them seriously stretching out each rescue. They told each one twice: from the lifeboat's perspective, then from the rescued's perspective. Also the editing was kind of annoying? Instead of showing a whole video of a rescue it was constantly interrupted with talking heads, before flicking back to a repeated video clip. Everyone involved in the rescues seem like the loveliest people though, so I can't fault them at all.
I'm now onto Channel 4's Emergency Helicopter Medics, which covers 3 difference Air Ambulances: Great North (Northumberland & Cumbria), Thames Valley (Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire), and East Anglia (Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk). So there are a lot more people to keep track of, but again, they're all really nice and full of banter! Channel 4 don't fuck around either and won't censor injuries and swearing, which is good. But yikes, their video player is dogshit: doesn't even have autoplay! Also, I'm currently on a free trial for ad-free, but they still put trailers for other shows in, so once again I'm unable to Chromecast it to my TV and have to use an adblocker.
I'm over 3 seasons in already :D

Airedale Terrier: Dog Breed Characteristics & Care
Tumblr media
Are you looking for a dog that is intelligent, playful, and loyal? If so, the Airedale Terrier might be the perfect breed for you. In this article, Meowk9 will discuss the characteristics and care of this beloved dog breed.
Introduction
The Airedale Terrier, also known as the King of Terriers, is a breed that originated in the Aire Valley of Yorkshire, England. This breed is a cross between the Otterhound and the Old English Terrier. They were initially bred as hunting dogs and were later trained to be war dogs during World War I. Today, the Airedale Terrier is a popular family pet and is known for their intelligence, loyalty, and playful nature. Breed Overview: - GROUP: Terrier - HEIGHT: 23 to 24 inches (male), the female is slightly smaller - WEIGHT: 40 to 65 pounds - COAT: Hard, wiry, dense, straight, short topcoat, with a softer undercoat - COAT COLOR: The head and ears are tan, and the body is a mix of tan and black or dark grizzle - LIFE SPAN: 11 to 13 years - TEMPERAMENT: Outgoing, friendly, intelligent, alert, confident, courageous - HYPOALLERGENIC: Yes - ORIGIN: England
History of Airedale Terriers
The Airedale Terrier was developed in the 19th century in the United Kingdom. They were bred to hunt small game and were used as vermin control in factories and mills. They were later bred to be larger to work as a hunting dog for bigger game. During World War I, they were trained to be messenger dogs, ambulance carriers, and even sentry dogs. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888.
Physical Characteristics
The Airedale Terrier is a medium-sized dog that weighs between 50-70 pounds and stands around 22-24 inches tall. They have a wiry and curly coat that comes in shades of tan and black. The breed has a long head, with a black nose and small, dark eyes. Their ears are V-shaped and hang down close to the cheeks. Airedales are muscular and have a strong and athletic build.
Personality Traits
The Airedale Terrier is known for being an intelligent and playful breed. They are loyal to their family and have a protective nature. This breed is great with children and is known for being friendly towards strangers. They have a lot of energy and love to play, so they need plenty of exercise and stimulation. They can also be stubborn at times, so training and socialization are essential.
Health Issues
The Airedale Terrier is generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they are prone to certain health issues. These can include hip dysplasia, allergies, and skin problems. Airedales are also susceptible to ear infections due to their floppy ears. Regular veterinary checkups and preventative care can help keep your Airedale healthy.
Grooming Requirements
The Airedale Terrier has a wiry and curly coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling. They should be brushed at least once a week and trimmed every 6-8 weeks. Regular baths are also necessary to keep their coat clean and healthy. The breed's ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infections.
Exercise Needs
The Airedale Terrier is an active breed that needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy going for walks, runs, and hikes with their owners. They also love to play and can benefit from interactive toys and games. Airedales can adapt to living in an apartment, but they require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy.
Training Tips
Airedale Terriers are highly intelligent dogs, but they can also be stubborn and independent. Training and socialization should start at an early age to prevent any bad behavior. Positive reinforcement training methods work best with this breed, as they respond well to praise and treats. Consistency and patience are also key when training an Airedale Terrier.
Tumblr media
Diet and Nutrition
The Airedale Terrier needs a balanced and nutritious diet to stay healthy. They require a high-quality dog food that is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. The amount of food your Airedale needs will depend on their age, size, and activity level. It's important to avoid overfeeding your Airedale, as they can easily gain weight. Obesity can lead to health problems such as joint issues and heart disease.
Common Misconceptions
There are some misconceptions about Airedale Terriers that are important to clear up. One misconception is that they are aggressive dogs. However, this is not true. Airedales can be protective of their family, but they are generally friendly and affectionate towards people. Another misconception is that they are difficult to train. While Airedales can be stubborn, they are highly intelligent and can excel in obedience training with the right techniques.
Pros and Cons of Owning an Airedale Terrier
Like any breed, there are pros and cons to owning an Airedale Terrier. Some of the pros include their intelligence, loyalty, and playfulness. They are great family dogs and get along well with children. Airedales also make good watchdogs, as they are protective of their family. However, some of the cons of owning an Airedale include their energy level, grooming requirements, and potential for stubbornness. They require daily exercise and regular grooming, which can be time-consuming.
Finding an Airedale Terrier
If you're interested in adding an Airedale Terrier to your family, there are several ways to find one. You can contact a breeder, rescue organization, or check with local animal shelters. It's important to do your research and find a reputable breeder or rescue organization to ensure that you are getting a healthy dog.
Cost of Owning an Airedale Terrier
The cost of owning an Airedale Terrier can vary depending on several factors, such as where you live, the breeder's reputation, and any health issues. The initial cost of purchasing an Airedale can range from $1,500 to $3,000. You will also need to consider the cost of food, grooming, vet visits, and any training or obedience classes.
Conclusion
The Airedale Terrier is a beloved breed known for their intelligence, loyalty, and playful nature. They make great family pets and are highly adaptable to different living situations. However, they do require daily exercise and regular grooming, which can be time-consuming. If you're considering adding an Airedale Terrier to your family, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder or rescue organization.

Watching the Conservative party self-destruct after 12 years of near-untouchable power while the economy tanks is akin to seeing your racist neighbour’s house flood with sewage. It’s delightful schadenfreude – until you realise that stink is heading straight for you. If there is one positive to the Tory party conference this week, it is that these people have been at least temporarily contained. A kind of Alcatraz for Eton alumni. I would say “how much damage can they do?” locked in a conference hall in Birmingham; but based on the last few days, this group would see that less as a question and more as an active challenge.
Enter the levelling up secretary, Simon Clarke, who kicked off conference by touting a new age of austerity in the middle of a cost of living crisis. Britain had, Clarke said, been in a “fool’s paradise” for too long with a “very large welfare state”, which must come as news to the people queueing in the utopia of their local food bank. Early figures suggest public services will see cuts of up to £18bn a year, while benefits are being lined up for real-term cuts.
Pulling money from the poorest to further enrich the wealthy is the sort of agenda so cliched in its evil that by all rights it should be delivered by a minister twiddling a tiny moustache. With even Tory backbenchers feeling an urge to do the right thing and dissent, the chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, took to Twitter just hours before his speech on Monday with a screen-grabbed U-turn on the 45p rate of tax, like a reality TV star apologising via the Notes app for inappropriate touching in the villa.
Unfortunately for him, the other contestants seemed as though they may have been drinking as they broke ranks, creating the kind of unhinged chaos in which you find yourself listening to Nadine Dorries and thinking, “good point”. It was all very last days of Rome, albeit with less dignity.
The only thing the Tory party could seemingly unite around was the need to find a scapegoat. The education minister, Andrea Jenkyns, targeted (entirely made up) “Harry Potter degrees”. GCSE ethics experiment Suella Braverman announced it would be “my dream” to get migration flights to Rwanda by Christmas, channelling Mariah Carey’s less popular B-side All I Want for Christmas (Is to Deport Torture Victims). As one cabinet source told the Daily Mail of impending revolt: “The trouble is, there are so many bastards in the party.” Quite.
Not that any of this bothered Truss, whose keynote speech had the air of a coma patient who had woken up with scarce memory of the last fortnight. Any economic crisis was caused by Putin and Covid, she implored. Her government would keep an “iron grip” on the public finances. Even Greenpeace protesters couldn’t jar her back to reality. The speech was 35 minutes short, though you couldn’t say it felt it. The only thing longer than Truss’s cadence is the current wait for an ambulance.
Tellingly, the “sensibles” of the Conservative party were missing from the audience, like rats fleeing the proverbial. When Boris Johnson is being referred to as “the sensible” era of Tory governance, it certainly gives a perspective on the depths of the particular barrel we are now scraping.
One notable absentee was Rishi Sunak, who has reportedly stayed in his constituency in Yorkshire, presumably unable to travel to conference on account of physically laughing too hard. As one Sunak ally reportedly put it: the former leadership candidate wished to “give Truss all the space she needs to own the moment”.
If there is one group currently suffering more than the select Tories who warned about Truss, it is those who supported her. As one Tory MP who voted for Truss lamented to the Times: “We’ve ended up with a perfect storm of problems.” If only there had been some sort of warning any of this was going to happen. Much like the MPs who supported Johnson only to feign surprise when he turned out to be a liar, there is something remarkable about seeing MPs who backed Truss in the leadership campaign one month ago now claiming shock at her shortcomings. A woman whose sole qualification for the post appeared to be “looks a bit like Margaret Thatcher when sitting in a tank”.
The truth is, of course, Tory MPs supported Truss not because they didn’t realise what she would do, but because they did. Just like their cheerleaders in the rightwing press, it suited them to get tax cuts for their own class and chums in the City and they cared nothing for the consequences – until they were found out. If recent polling is to be believed, “consequences” for Tory MPs may finally be on the way, specifically in the form of a ballot count at 3am in a cold school hall. It could not happen to a more deserving group. The question, though, is just how much more harm they can inflict on the country in the meantime. That isn’t a challenge – more an omen.

Their mission is expensive and frustrating as the cost of living and working in Paris mounts and the press turn a deaf ear to the Irish. Ó Ceallaigh, exasperated, writes to Cathal Brugha looking for:
a few thousand pounds—don’t be too greatly shocked by the light way I speak of it for the purpose of smoothing a passage to the presence of great men here and of securing the ear of the press. You can get nothing whatsoever done otherwise.

The Kinmel Park mutiny takes place in Wales. 15,000 Canadian troops are stationed there awaiting repatriation after the Great War.
The mutineers were our own men, stuck in the mud of North Wales, waiting impatiently to get back to Canada – four months after the end of the war. The 15,000 Canadian troops that concentrated at Kinmel didn't know about the strikes that held up the fuelling ships and which had caused food shortages. The men were on half rations, there was no coal for the stove in the cold grey huts, and they hadn't been paid for over a month. Forty-two had slept in a hut meant for thirty, so they each took turns sleeping on the floor, with one blanket each.                                            - Noel Barbour Gallant Protestors, 1975

I want to do a Very Long Post about how much I love Helicopter ER, plus some highlights, so word of warning: potentially gruesome stuff beyond the cut:
So. Here are the reasons I love this show so much (currently on season 8, so I'm in deep!):
It's about the Yorkshire Air Ambulance service, which means excellent accents, lots of cheerful banter even through unimaginable pain, and using little phrases like "had a funny do" after someone suffers a severe medical episode lol
One of my favourite paramedics is called Kit Von Mitwitz, because 1) cool name!! and 2) he's cute (generally, I think being a helicopter paramedic/doctor just makes you about 62% more attractive/lovely)
The medical shit is super cool and interesting! Never realised how much I was into it before watching some of the clips on YouTube. Now I've gone into a bit of a rabbit hole and bought a load of books written by paramedics, doctors, and forensic pathologists
That about sums up the main bits. I watched it mainly to find out why/when the air ambulances get deployed (I live under the North West Air Ambulance's flight path to the Pennines), and I have learnt a lot! Main reasons seem to be:
Heart attack/stroke/seizure/anaphylaxis
Fallen off a motocross bike (literally almost every episode features the Fat Cat track at Doncaster!)
Fallen off a pushbike/mountain bike/motorbike in the middle of nowhere
Fallen off a horse
Trampled/attacked by cows
Fall from a ladder/roof/machinery
Road traffic collisions
Weirder ones include a woman who managed to stab herself in the eye, a father who accidentally put superglue in his child's eye instead of eyedrops, and the occasional handyman who slips and almost severs a limb with a circular saw (lots of degloving injuries too with that last one!!)
Ongoing memes include farmers close to death and in agony only rating their pain scale as a 3/10.
The age rating kind of wobbles around a bit, so I don't know if it was shown before the watershed in the earlier seasons? Because they would blur out open wounds (cowards!!) and bleep out swear words like... [checks notes] "bloody" (honestly, wtf). Later seasons seem to be at least a 15, since I'm getting to see all the cool shit, like open fractures and the aforementioned deglovings.
Craziest incident so far (that they ended up making a whole episode about - called Critical Hour) was when this young man got trapped in his car. They spent 2.5 hours trying to get him out, because his foot was smushed by the gearbox. The doctor was saying about how the foot's going to have to come off within earshot of this lad (but I think they'd given him ketamine by this point, so he might not have noticed). In the short version, it only showed them discussing how he might have to have an amputation, but in the extended episode it was actually wayyyy more serious. They didn't have enough room to fit scalpels and/or surgical saws in, so they had to ask one of the firefighters if he could use the jaws of life to cut his leg off!! Just the sheer insanity of having to contemplate that decision! It literally got down to about 4 minutes before they were going to do it, until, miraculously, they managed to open up the space and free his foot... Wild shit.
Overall, I just really like the show because everyone is so nice and polite (apart from the occasional scumbag) when they're having the absolute worst day of their life, suffering through massive amounts of pain, and it just makes me so grateful that we have this incredible charity filled with the loveliest people who want to help you. Actually makes you proud to be British for once!
And speaking of British, there's a lot of classic British understatement like "well he's got multiple broken ribs, a head injury and his foot is hanging off, so, yeah... he's quite poorly". Cracks me up every time.

Airedale Terrier: Know About This Dig Breed Special Information
The Airedale Terrier also called the Bingley Terrier and the Waterside Terrier is a terrier-type dog breed that originated in the valley (dale) of the River Eyre in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is traditionally called the “king of terriers” because it is the largest of the terrier breeds. The Airedale was bred from the Old English Black and Tan Terrier, the Otterhound, and perhaps a few other terrier breeds, and has contributed to other dog breeds such as the Yorkshire Terrier.
Originally bred to serve as a versatile hunting and all-around farm dog, the breed is also used as a war dog, guide dog, and police dog in Britain. In the United States, the breed is used to hunt large game, upland birds, and waterfowl, and to serve in many other functional capacities.

Airedale Terrier Size
Males are 23 inches tall and weigh about 50 to 65 pounds. Females are slightly shorter and weigh 40 to 55 pounds.
History Of Airedale Terrier
The Airedale has the distinction of being the largest of the terriers. The first attempt to create an Airedale terrier, although no one had a blueprint in mind at the time, was in 1853. A rough-coated black and tan terrier was bred with an otterhound in hopes of producing a well-rounded game dog.
Hunts otters in rivers and rodents on land.
The first breeding produced a dog that had the curiosity of a terrier and was capable of swimming and scent play. The cross was called Waterside or Bingley Terriers and within 12 years of the first crossbreeding, the dog had become a popular sporting terrier.
First dog show
In 1864, the first dog show was held in Air Valley and the Waterside Terrier competed under the Broken-Haired Terriers class (the name Waterside or Bingley Terrier was not mentioned until 1879).
Author Hugh Dalziel, after judging the dog at a show, went on to describe the Bingley terrier as “par excellence … a very good one”.
His comments sparked immediate interest in the breed and an outcry from fans who rejected the fact that Dalziel had portrayed Bingley as the birthplace of the breed.
At this point, a group of fans got together and decided that the Waterside or Bingley Terrier should be renamed the Airedale Terrier. It is believed that the real name was first Dr. It was suggested by Gordon Stables, who judged the dogs a year before Dalziel, but the fact is difficult to validate. In 1880, Dalziel again had the opportunity to judge the Airedale terrier and mentioned the dog in his report.
The name Airedale Terrier was not accepted or commonly used, which caused much confusion. At various shows, classes were created for one or all three of the breed’s names, and it was not until 1886 that the Kennel Club in England accepted the Airedale Terrier as the official breed name.
Airedale Terrier Club of America
The Airedale Terrier Club of America was founded in 1900 and, in 1910, the club started a permanent trophy that is offered at parent club shows.
Tumblr media
Airedale terriers were used as messengers, sentries, food and ammunition carriers, scouts, ambulance dogs, ratters, Red Cross casualty dogs, sled dogs, and guard dogs during World War II. The war brought stories of Airedale terrier bravery and loyalty and increased the breed’s popularity. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding, and Calvin Coolidge owned and envisioned the race.
