The Witch and the Beast #10 - Origin Witch

Shinji Itadaki makes his return on the Witch and the Beast #10 to prove that he is indeed one of the best storyboarders in the whole show. Although shading isn't typically attributed to storyboard artists, his episodes tend to exhibit a very unique shading style, thanks to meticulous attention to detail in his boards. This episode is one of the series' best since Phanora's arc thanks to him.

Also, Kana Hanazawa as Angela was sooooo good. The casting overall in this show has been great.

In my opinion, this ep serves as a great example of what a perfect episode of this show could be, despite encountering various production issues. The show's ideas and aesthetic are always mostly realized, but it's the production issues that bring the show down.

brother crab’s spring 2024 parting thoughts: sasayaku you ni koi wo utau

i guess there's no sense in delaying this now that the studio seems to have gone bankrupt, rip the last two episodes that never made it out 😔

the start of sasakoi was really charming to me, i remember enjoying the first episode a whole lot. yori and himari had a really adorable dynamic that was a ton of fun to see unfold in their earliest interactions

i did not... initially... care for the love triangle drama that cropped up fairly quickly, though i think i eventually came around to the side characters. like they weren't entirely uninteresting, but iirc i was just wanting more of a focus on cute moments with the main girls

basically things got real messy, which isn't necessarily a bad or uncompelling thing, just was not totally my thing

production issues became increasingly obvious as the series went on, to the point that the last episodes being indefinitely delayed (and now probably forever unfinished) did not surprise me at all. it was never so bad that i felt like dropping it, but i get a pretty strong sense that this in no way did the manga justice

maybe i'll check out the manga one day but this being a band story... man. it's just a bummer that the anime didn't pan out, because it's just so nice to hear stories about bands, about music, out loud. to actually hear the music! but alas

'Whisper Me a Love Song' Anime Adaptation Announced

On Friday, Ichijinsha announced that Yuri romance manga Whisper Me a Love Song (Sasayaku You ni Koi o Utau) will be adapted into a television anime. The manga is written and illustrated by Eku Takeshima.

According to the newly launched website for the anime adaptation, Xin Ya Cai is directing the anime at Cloud Hearts with animation production supervision by Yokohama Animation Lab. Additional staff includes series composer Hiroki Uchida and character designer Minami Yoshida.

It will star Hana Shimano and Asami Seto as Himari and Yori, respectively.

The announcement means that Whisper me a Love Song will join a long list of new and upcoming Yuri anime, including the likes of The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genus Young Lady, Yuri is My Job!, I'm in Love with the Villainess, and The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess.

Whisper Me a Love Song is a school Yuri romance series following first-year student Himari Kino, who “falls” for her senior, Yori Asanagi, after watching her sing at the new student opening celebration. Enamored with the older girl’s talent and demeanor, Himari confesses her “love” to Yori, who misinterprets her feelings as romantic and responds that she has fallen in love at first sight as well. Throughout of the series, both girls explore their feelings for each other and consider what it means to love someone.

The manga, which began serialization in Comic Yuri Hime in February 2019, is incredibly popular. It won the top spot in the 5th Yuri Manga Sousenkyo, a popularity poll among Japanese Yuri readers held annually by Yuri Navi, beating out the widely beloved Bloom Into You for the first time since the poll’s inception. It also won 18th out of 50 nominees in Niconico and Davci’s Next Manga Awards in 2020.

Whisper Me a Love Song has also received positive reviews from critics. YuriMother awarded the first three volumes a combined score of 8/10, praising the art and the compelling characters and relationships.

Ichijinsha published Whisper Me a Love Song in Japanese and will release the seventh volume on January 18, 2023. Kodansha publishes six volumes of the series in English.

Most kids are born. They're conceived by two people who may or not be in love and after nine months they're born. Not Winter. Although she may think she was born, although her "parents" may think they had conceived her, she was created in a lab. She was nothing but a few cells in a petri dish, a replica of a lost child.

Kira Volkov had a beautiful child, Kiana, that had been ripped away from her. As any mother who had lost their own, she was devastated, and desperately wanted her child back. Being a VERY talented scientist, she replicated the cells of her lost child and cloned her. She created a new Kiana, whom she named “Snezhana”, after the area where she was born in. She had succeeded, but she was terrified that the same thing would happen to this new child, so she handed her off to an old friend of hers, Doctor Mark Castellan. 

Unfortunately, doctor Castellan was NOT a very good person. At all. As Winter grew up, her only memories were that of being Doctor Castellan being her actual father, watching various operations, including human dissections, animal dissections, the creation of various diseases and other things like that. When Winter turned 13, she began to develop a interest in quantum mechanics after seeing her older “brother” Aster Castellan attempt to create a quantum void maker, though it never created a safe and stable void. Winter began to research that subject with Aster as her teacher. She also picked up hacking and video games as a hobby. At 17, She published several articles about her findings, and was scouted by an organization called ANTI-ENTROPY, which was going to launch a new program and wanted Winter to be a member in it. She of course accepted, but a few weeks before she went to the AE building, an incident at the lab occurred and Aster was killed. Because of this, Winter held off of going to AE until Doctor Castellan forced her too. While at ANTI-ENTROPY, she completed Aster’s quantum void machine. She also met Karina Siling, the so-called “prodigy of Prestige Academy”, and the two became friends, eventually, Karina told Winter about the horrible things that AE really did, and what she had learned from a “friend” named Yuta Sakuya, Karina also told Winter about the World Serpent, and invited Winter to come with her to the World Serpent. Winter didn’t want to leave her universe because she had been accepted to Seoul National University at a record age, so she agreed to only occasionally stay with the World Serpent, and otherwise, she was free to do her own thing. So Winter created the online alias “Silver Wolf”.

Occasionally, Winter will assist the Armed Detective Agency or the Port Mafia, it depends on her mood, and who pays her more, thought Winter joining the ADA and/or World Serpent officially.

ANIMEJAPAN 2023: LE MILLEMILA NOVITÀ DALL'EVENTO (PARTE 4)

La seconda stagione di Mushoku Tensei arriverà a luglio!

Ecco la quarta e ultima parte del resoconto più lungo di sempre, in cui ho raccolto ben 49 NEWS diverse, alle quali in verità si sarebbero potuti aggiungere altri mini update su cast e simili, che non ho incluso.

Senza contare che ci sono stati anche annunci concomitanti, grazie al fatto che i due giorni di fiera sono stati "strategicamente" piazzati a fine stagione televisiva.

Vorrei poter dire che l'AnimeJapan 2023 è stato un gran evento, con tanti aggiornamenti attesi, bei video e annunci interessanti, cosa che in effetti è stato, ma rigurgitare più di una cinquantina di notizie nel giro di 48 ore per me rimane follia pura. Una cosa resa ancor più ridicola e insensata, dal fatto che il tutto è stato comunque preceduto da un'ondata di video e annunci ugualmente importante. Eh sì, vorrei dire che è finita qua e che ora ci rilassiamo mentre aspettiamo l'inizio della stagione primaverile, ma ci sono un ANIME RECAP che prende la polvere nelle bozze e altre cosine uscite fuori sempre negli ultimi giorni che aspettano di essere condividere con voi.

 🔶🔸MUSHOKU TENSEI: JOBLESS REINCARNATION

Trailer e doppia locandina per la seconda stagione della serie, che arriverà su Crunchyroll a partire da luglio. Prima di quanto mi aspettassi!

Da notare che i nuovi episodi sono parzialmente in mano ad un nuovo staff: la regia, la sceneggiatura e il character design infatti sono curati, rispettivamente, da Hiroki Hirano (assistente di regia nella seconda parte della prima stagione), Toshiya Ono (Shadows House, 86) e Sanae Shimada (Photokano, Utopa).

The Premise:

6 months before the Decay of Angels frame the Armed Detective Agency as terrorists, an English scientist named Dr. Shelley gets a list of names and a mysterious request of her ability.

Frankenstein allows her to create artificial humans that serve as fusions of two ability users. They have the abilities, physical features, and memories of the ability users they're a fusion of. It's quite a harrowing existence. Dr. Shelley's ability has no limits, as long as she knows the ability's name and general function of both users.

And she received a list of the Port Mafia, Armed Detective Agency's, and Hunting Dog's special abilities- with the explicit request to make fusions from all of them.

And who is she to refuse?

Bungou Stray Chimeras is an AU focusing on these fusion kids, 'chimeras' as they are, as they cope with their past memories/identities of the canon characters, exploring their new sense of self while remaining stuck in the lab, and eventually, what happens when they go to Yokohama and confront the ability users they orginated from.

Paradox - No Longer Tainted Sorrow. Known as being either extremely mysterious or extremely annoying... often both, actually. It's easy to see how they resemble Dazai and Chuuya, but they resent comparison- perhaps because they hold no attachment to either's life or past? Well, at least Corruption is far easier contained within them....

Rokuzo - The Matchless Poet Shalt Not Die. How someone can have the work ethic of Kunikida without having a job is answered by her existence, though calling her responsible might be an overstatement. Bears a striking resemblance to Kunikida, though the dark purple hair and softer eyes make it impossible to mistake the two. Her morals are strong, as is her desire to help.

Toyotarō - Vita Sexualis Created Equal. It's unclear where his morals lie, as he's willing to use Mori's tactics to get what he wants, but holds a disdain for many of his actions that's certainly akin to Fukuzawa. He's done cruel things, he's done kind things. And while he doesn't consider himself a good person, he's most certainly a good leader.

Miyako - Golden Decadence. Though not externally very emotional, it's well-known how attached they are to the memories of both people they were made from, and the actions they'll take because of it. With their eyes and beauty mark, it's hard not to see their resemblance to Ango, but the hastily chopped hair is most certainly the color of Kouyou's- and maybe their similarity to her would be more evident if they weren't always so, so tired.

"The Faceless Wolf" - Midwinter Rashomon. The first of the Hunting Dog fusions, not that he was intended to be. Quiet and reclusive, though he has a fierce loyalty to the few he's grown close too. His long black ponytail pairs well with his Akutagawa-esque aesthetic, though the golden eyes give him an intimidating aura of his own.

Lenore - Great Gatsby in the Rue Morgue. She seems unattached to the present state of the Guild, and the only connection she has to its remnants is to take what she needs for herself. Her long, pale golden hair could easily cover her eyes, but the fact it doesn't means her tired, lavender eyes are far more present. Perhaps the obvious similarities is why she feels no need to show her face to the world.

Yoshiko - The Futon Precipice. When an ability that thrives on comfort is given to someone who doesn't feel unhappiness, a girl like Yoshiko is the result. She has the same scars as Ivan, and if it weren't for hair color and other physical traits, it'd be difficult to see how she resembles Katai. A touch absent minded, and often doesn't leave her room, but she does observe people in almost cutting ways.

Tom - The Grapes of Huck Finn Tom Sawyer. By all accounts, he could pass for a normal, young American man in most settings. If it weren't for how easily he walks to bloodshed, and almost seems to crave the taste of blood belonging to others or himself. Whatever sort of person he is, whatever he wants, it's all circling around Paradox- his partner, and his god.

Lemon - Lemonade Draconia. A scientist through and through, they're an odd sort of person- as wild and excitable as Kajii, almost silly one could say. But they do still bear the dragon, and all that entails. Dealt with Shibusawa, therefor preventing the Dead Apple incident.

"The Blood Wolf" - The Perfect Soul. Full of energy, living up to the name of a wolf just like her fellow Hunting Dog fusions, perhaps even moreso. Excitable, violent, she seems much more like one fusion than the other... and yet, she's not as childlike, and certainly more mature. Or maybe she's better at acting as if she is...

"The Vanishing Wolf" - Priceless Tears in the Snow. Always following their leader, always by his or their fellow Wolves side, and difficult to read- after all, they've inherited much of Tetcho, at least in ways that are obvious. The strength of two Hunting Dogs makes them one of the most physically powerful in the lab, and it's good they don't have an appetite for the pain of those they deem unjust.... or it seems they don't, at least.

Hester - The Scarlet Wind. Most don't recognize his components on first glance, considering neither of them wear worn-down jeans and leather jackets, but the over-abundance of cross-laden jewelry and those lavender eyes had to come from somewhere. Harsh, crass, and unfiltured, she doesn't get along with most people. Those he's loyal to, however...

Vakula - The Overcoat Punishment. They know Fyodor Dostoevsky more than anyone in the world. They know Nikolai Gogol better than he knows himself. Who are they, and what do they want? It certainly doesn't seem to be peace.

Juliette - Illuminations Gate. Made of the leader of the long-gone Mimic, and an ever longer gone Transcendant, she's quite powerful and formidable. And yet, she comes off as a rather reserved girl, often cold and soft spoken.

Omni - Flawless. The final creation of the doctor's. The information ability of a being created by the book, combined with five-second visions, created something far more powerful than his creator ever could have imagined.

The live performance for Whisper Me a Love Song... Wow. It’s just a total blast of energy and something Yokohama Animation Lab and Cloud Hearts have not had in a while. It exceeds by far the amount of movement I expected for the live performances, and I believe that’s mostly due to the specific allocation of staff. The live performance staff were listed separately in the credits rather than alongside the rest of the episode 1 crew. We have storyboarding and direction from Tsumori Shindo, whom I couldn’t find much information on aside from his Twitter, but he seems to be an extremely talented and creative visual artist. He has an indie anime movie coming out in the Summer of this year, and from the production materials provided on his socials, it almost gives me an ethereal, creepy vibe. It looks very unique, and if someone like him is going to be handling the direction of the live performances for this show throughout its airing, I truly don’t think we have anything to worry about. The other staff members are more in line with what we’d expect from Yokohama Animation Lab. Misae Kawakubo, the animation director for the live performance, is quite a regular presence at Yokohama in general, as is key animator Shouya Gotou, whom we saw handling Monster Animation Direction in The Witch and the Beast (one of the better-animated aspects of that show), and Miyuu Ookubo, whom unfortunately I don’t know much about at the moment. All of them seem to be fairly new to the industry. The fact that they decided to seemingly have a dedicated group of staff just for the performance section of the episodes bodes quite well for the rest of the show. Shouya Gotou’s work in past Yokohama projects, while good, has never been quite this fluid and fun. It seems like they’re giving this project a lot of time for the staff to work with, possibly thanks to the delay, which could be credited to NUManimation, who’s airing this show, being quite consistent in terms of the anime they typically air being of pretty good quality. Being allowed to delay the anime by 4 months is not common. The fact that the animator staff seems to be Yokohama Animation Lab / Cloud Hearts regulars, if not just contracted to the studio, suggests that we’ll likely see them again for live performances in future episodes, which will be great.

That also seems to be the staff direction for this entire project; it’s filled with newer staff which seems to be a great thing in this case as it has improved Yokohama Animation Lab / Cloud Hearts quality of work by a significant amount. Full writeup here for you to check out.

are there manga you would be interested in an anime version of?

it already has the OVAs, but a full Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou anime would be great. i'd love a Please Bully Me, Miss Villainess! amime because more yuri anime is always a good thing. Akane-banashi, Ginka & Glüna, or Tokyo Demon Bride Story could all be fun as anime

Takopi wouldn't be suited for a 12 episode anime, but i think a four or six episode ONA of it could hurt a lot

as for tie-in stuff that would never actually get an anime, the Rhine Lab manhwa deserves one and also Back Alley Alliance Nightmare

The Whisper Me a Love Song anime, animated by studio Cloud Hearts and Yokohama Animation Lab, has been delayed from January to April 2024. Additionally, Xin Ya Cai who was originally directing the series has been replaced by Akira Mano (Ghost Hunt) due to health reasons.
