Apparently yokai can be classified as Japanese fairytale so, because of that, I’ll go with: 

Dazai is a kitsune who wants to interact with the human world, so he joins a circus, since he won’t be so out of place there. He’s still pretty strange to everyone, of course, but the circus group is full of a lot of strange people so they don’t ask many questions, and Dazai is pretty good about talking people around in circles without answering anything. 

Chuuya is an acrobat whose performances make people think he can defy gravity (lmao) but actually, he’s trained really hard and is just really good at what he does. He also isn’t afraid of taking risks, so he’s trained for and pulled off a lot of really complicated/somewhat dangerous stunts. He finds Dazai and his mysteriousness annoying, but he’s also fascinated and he doesn’t want to admit it. 

Dazai finds Chuuya fascinating, too. Most of the people in the circus are interesting but Chuuya comes across as the one for whom the circus means the most. He really cares about all of the people he works with. That was partially why he and Dazai started talking--he tried to make Dazai feel welcome but Dazai didn’t understand what he was doing so he annoyed Chuuya instead of being friendly with him. 

Eventually, by watching Dazai enough, Chuuya figures out that Dazai must have some sort of genuine magic but still can’t figure out if he’s human or not. Dazai wants to learn more about humans through Chuuya, since Chuuya is the most interesting one he’s met, and in doing so they get closer. And then, at some point, Dazai tells Chuuya what he really is. 

Chuuya is surprised that someone who isn’t human can still be as annoying as one. 

And then, you know, they form a relationship.

bzzt bzzt new soukoku au dropped, this time featuring YOKAI

dazai is a kitsune who lives in the forest and watches over the shrines of his predecessor (that he lowkey inherited), chuuya is an oni who accidentally d worded a guy on one of those shrines and then got stuck with a fox forever

chuuya's design is mostly his oni design from mayoi's pandemonium night, i just added the corruption tattoos

oni are servants of hell and, before they were oni, were the most vile and sinful of humans on earth. as oni, their jobs are to punish humans that are JUST short of being awful enough to become oni as well, and they can eat souls so that's fun

chuuya, for a long time, works with other oni (it's the sheep) to eat, seal away and punish souls. he meets dazai one day, an annoying and secretive kitsune in the forest, accidentally gets a mess on his shrine and dazai decides to annoy him for the rest of time

then one day, out of nowhere, dazai sets all the souls of the sinners loose in the name of an ambiguous "greater good", and offs the sheep to make sure they don't seal up the sinners again. he tries to do the same with chuuya, but chuuya is fueled by his anger and.......... retaliates

chuuya's anger summons fire, he leaves dazai engulfed in them, and that's how dazai gets his bandages in this.

chuuya also swears that he'll hate dazai forever for what he's done, which, like, he does, but it's that typical soukoku hate where hate = i want to punch and kick you stupid and then make out with you

and a hundred or so years later dazai is back to annoying chuuya like normal anyway because this is skk, but now they just have more baggage

fun fact, in kitsune lore they can turn invisible! the downside is that their shadows are still visible

6. Yokai AU
