❗️MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH❗️⁣ ⁣ May is mental health awareness month 🤓⁣ ⁣ Mental illnesses affect 19% of the adult population, 46% of teenagers and 13% of children each year 😳⁣ ⁣ However, only half of those affected receive treatment, often because of the stigma attached to mental health😢⁣ ⁣ A mental illness is a physical illness of the brain that causes disturbances in thinking, behavior, energy or emotion that make it difficult to cope with everyday life 😣⁣ ⁣ Possible causes can include genetics, brain chemistry, brain structure, experiencing trauma or having another medical condition 🧠 ⁣ ⁣ More than 20% of adults each year struggle with some type of mental disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (panic attacks), generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, depression, bipolar depression 🤯⁣ ⁣ Can you relate to any of these? ANTIMICROBIAL YOGA MAT⁣ ⁣ I wanted to share with you the online teaching space I have set up in my temporary quarantine home 🏡 ⁣ ⁣ I did the best I could with whatever equipment I could scavenge, as getting quarantined and not being able to leave this place at all, came completely unexpected 😅⁣ ⁣ The most important bit of my teaching space apart from the technical stuff is my beloved @corcyoga mat 🧘🏽‍♀️⁣ ⁣ Did you know that corc is naturally antimicrobial? 🦠⁣ ⁣ The suberian wax found in the cell walls of cork makes it impermeable to liquids and resistant to moisture, providing an unwelcoming environment for microbial growth 💧⁣ ⁣ According to research (happy to share the source if interested in reading the whole study), cork displayed high antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with a bacterial reduction of 96.93% after just 90 minutes 😮⁣ ⁣ Although research is limited with other bacteria strains, viruses and fungi, the above result suggests that this worth having a closer look at 🤓⁣ ⁣ Also, cork is naturally resistant to dust & mites, making it an ideal material for those who suffer from allergies, asthma and sinus issues 👃 💨 ⁣ ⁣ I got my mat from @corcyoga about 6 months ago and very happy with it. SUSTAINABLE YOGA MAT A few months ago while looking for a sustainable yoga mat option, I have come across Corc Yoga. They are a sustainable producer of yoga mats in Portugal, solely using cork, 100% recyclable, renewable, and biodegradable. No trees are cut down in the process of harvesting cork. Even waste is strategically used throughout the production process. Although cork trees can live to be over 200 years old, they cannot be harvested until they reach 25-30 years in age and about 70 cm in circumference. After each harvest, the bark regenerates and can be stripped every 9 years. Portugal’s carefully regulated cork industry protects the integrity of the environment while creating high-wage seasonal jobs for more than 10,000 workers annually.
