MIKAGE PAST STORY #1

I was born in a small village deep in the mountains of the Showa Kingdom.

Everyone in the village had their own unique skills, and their reach would extend across the globe with tasks such as protection, espionage, and even assassination, all as part of the secretive 'Shadow Clan'.

Around this time, the neighboring countries seemed to be in constant conflict. My father and the villagers were always busy, rushing around day after day.

But I found myself growing up somewhat removed from all these shadows, due to a chance encounter. My mother was hired as the bodyguard of a prominent family in the Kobai Kingdom, and as an infant, I moved with her to their estate.

??? : Hah! There you are!

MIKAGE : (You never get tired, do you?)

The man behind the voice was the eldest son of the family, and he was my polar opposite—hardworking, honest, and more demanding of himself than anyone else.

The lady of the house was in poor health, and my mother was not only responsible for her protection but also for taking care of their son, Asahi. And so, I was raised as his foster brother.

MIKAGE : (It’s too bad for Asahi. If I hadn’t come out here, he’d still be working up a sweat training all day.)

But one can't change their inherent nature. I just wanted to live a relaxed and carefree life.

Today, as I lay on the veranda, dozing off while listening to Asahi's distant voice...

ASAHI : Mikage!

MIKAGE : Huh!?

He should have been training but, instead, Asahi had somehow found a way to creep up right behind me.

MIKAGE : (I might have been sleeping... But I still should've sensed his presence. Father will be furious if he finds out...)

ASAHI : What's up? Still half asleep? It's almost lunchtime. Let's go help out!

MIKAGE : Nah, I'd rather take a longer nap here.

ASAHI : Oversleeping is not good. Come on, let's go!

MIKAGE : ...Fine.

Yeah. For as long as I could remember, I had admired Asahi's dedication and determination to bring honor upon his family name, for the country, and for the greater good. I found it impressive and more than a little dazzling.

MIKAGE : (But still… I don't want to be like Asahi.)

MIKAGE : (I just wanna live an easy life.)

But I would never tell him that. Wouldn’t matter even if I did. Asahi wouldn’t change anyway, and it would just be a hassle for the both of us.

ASAHI : Mikage! If you're not busy, pass me that bowl!

MIKAGE : Yeah, yeah.

ASAHI : One 'yeah' is enough.

With his arms crossed, Asahi would speak like our mother and give me orders, making me smile wryly.

ASAHI : Strange… You're not trying to escape like you usually do, Mikage.

MIKAGE : Well, today's a special day. It's all about the mood.

I was about to say that escaping would be even more of a hassle, but I swallowed my words.

ASAHI : Don’t tell me escaping is too much trouble for you these days.

MIKAGE : Haha, you can see right through me, can't you?

Helping out Asahi and these little conversations between us were hassles, but… I really didn't mind days like these…

Victor “Hah... I really have changed, haven't I? Before I met you, I hardly ever thought about the future. Now, all I can think about is... how can I stay with [Name] forever?”

Len “Hell if I know what the future looks like. I just know you're still gonna come after me wherever I am, no matter what I'm doing. ...Well, do what you want. If you decide to follow me around for the rest of your life, I'll make sure you're prepared for that.”

Kuchen “The future? ...No, I can't really picture anything except making chocolate for the rest of my life. You know what I'm saying, right? I also see you right there next to me. Still smiling, happily eating my chocolates. Years pass, decades pass, and things'll probably stay just like that.”

Cuit “Nothing makes me happier than seeing a smile pop up on your face when you eat my food. All I want is for you to stay by my side, letting me see your smile. I really can't wait for the day I get to call you my wife.”

Riche “Every time I see how ardently you work, day in and day out... I suddenly find myself envisioning a little into the future. You are all the more beautiful, and your heart remains as honest as ever. I'm beside you, always worried... if I'm worthy of someone like yourself.”

Walter “...I have no idea about the future. If I could, I'd stay in Gastronomy for a long time, helping out the duke and everyone else. Hm? Nothing... I just naturally thought you'd stay by my side. Way, way into the future...”

Canaan “When I'm with you, your squishy cheeks put me right at ease... I wonder why? All my motivation starts flowing through me. Maybe I can't live without you. It sounds like a headache looking after me for a lifetime, but... hehe. I'll have to give the best ring in the world to the bride who makes that kind of promise to me.”

Adel “In the past, I wouldn't have needed an assistant or partner. But now when I imagine the future, you're there, as if it's the most natural thing. The thought of us buried in work, eating together, occasionally lending each other a shoulder, taking naps——heh, a lifetime of that doesn't sound half bad.”

Volks “If I must confess, I've been enchanted since we first met... by your light, which I'm certain will continue to change endlessly. I want it to be my own two hands that guide and protect your brilliance, no one else's. Would you allow me the privilege and honor of that?”

Merryrose “Before I met you, I swear I couldn't see anything in my future except a really dark path. Now I know a kind of happiness that I won't let go of no matter what. You're the one who taught it to me. Take responsibility for that... and spend your life with me, okay?”

Asahi “You're the one I cherish above all others, the one I want to protect. I'm still an amateur with a lot of shortcomings, but... someday... I'd like to tie the knot and build a happy future together. I might be moving too fast, but... what do you think?”

Shiranui “I'm gonna say what I always do, okay? Fortune comes in at the merry gate!! It's true life's not all just fun and games. But you and I can make it alright. We can live our days full of blessings, where even if we cry sometimes, we'll still end up laughing. Cheers to our happiness!”

Mikage “My ideal future? That's easy—a life where I spend all day everyday dozing off on your lap, doing absolutely nothing... Until recently, this would've just been a pipe dream. But now, well, I really want it. A happy 'n peaceful married life.”

Tamayura “I want to make this world a place for humans and mononoke to live together in harmony. When I achieve my dream, I'd be happy if you were there smiling next to me. And... if a day ever comes when we pledge our futures to each other... I'd want to invite a bunch of mononoke friends to celebrate with us.”

Aoi “Something as definite as 'staying the same' forever sounds so boring. Being able to wake up from your dreams is what makes it so fleeting and beautiful... That's what I used to think... But when I wake up from my transient dreams, I think I'd like to be with you. Hey, won't you be mine?”

Passionate Ocean

Searle “I get warm and fuzzy and sometimes so tight it hurts. Feeling like I'm in love just gets stronger and stronger when I'm with you. It's a feeling I only get with you, [Name]. It's just like a treasure to me. Ehehe, I love you. And I will forever and ever!”

Sheila “I've been thinking about this a lot, but the coffee you make tastes like something I'd want to drink everyday. It really is so relaxing and soothing. From now on... or rather, for as long as I live, I'd love to stay in your care. What do you think?”

Elma “A lot of stuff's happened since we first met. My days have gotten a whole lot happier since then. It's like a huge wave of happiness is here! Now, in the future, and always after that... Let's have a blast ridin' out the end of this wave!!”

Urbano “Yo, [Name]-han! Time to practice our husband-and-wife routine with all the hype we got today——wait, why do you actually sound on-board with it!? Pause, pause. I can't even joke about being legal spouses, 'cause that's like we already got married. It makes me so happy I'm embarrassed...”

Cinis “It is my duty as master to care for and look after my servants——however, at present, I've been getting a lot of favors from you. Hehehe, just so you know, I despise losing! I shall vow to make you happy for the rest of your life!”

Wait actually I just realised but Mikage’s mother only took Mikage to Kobai with her for her job right, but he also has a sister which means she has to be older than Mikage considering she didn’t go to Kobai. Now I wonder how much older she is?? Because assuming she was old enough to be left with their father, and keeping in mind the clan and village they’re from, it’s not like she could’ve been very young, even if she’s been trained since very early on. BUT we also don’t know what she canonically does to be possibly trained from very young on. Like, is she a ninja like Mikage? Mikage did mention there’re female ninjas in his clan but not that many, so it’s not out of the question. At the same time it has never been outright stated since what age Mikage himself has been trained (as far as I know) to use as basis for when his sister started training (if she is a ninja too I’m assuming gender doesn’t play a role in the starting age). Hands in hair I hope Mikage’s next card is his Deep Dream one with mentions of his sister or even better his sister actually appearing in the story

hahaha dw! i also did that with him too when i first got him (hollow liker solidarity) and if its not too much to ask, would you be able to recommend team comps for clearing the normal and hard revenge bosses? im having a hard time clearing them 😭😭

i havent been doing this revenge boss this time around (at least not right now since it was the first half and i was preoccupied on yumeishi management) so the most i can offer is a few baselines:

figure out what type the boss is, because its gonna be really difficult running a phys team on a phys boss that ends up buffing itself into oblivion. THAT SAID if you believe in your debuffers/buffing ability, you can still try

if its AoE, run two healers + guard/dps/utility. in AoE cases, usually the enemies in the back that will buff themselves while targetting at random will be the biggest threat. make sure you have a unit that can grant def for the bosses type (if its a magic boss, a unit that provides magic defense or a barrier if you have initial cyrus/initial victor good to g)

if its a single target, one or two guards with evade (initial kent and asahi) is the most important part, because if the boss breaks through your line of defense itll likely oneshot your units at that point def buffed or otherwise

buffing > debuffing usually, which unfortunately makes chars like hollow a little less viable BUT theyre not completely unusable and chars that grant stun/confusion can still buy time for a dps to snipe an enemy in the back.

these arent Solid of course, some AoE bosses wont have enemies in the back that are of worry (though some will have healers in the back, in which case those Do still count as itll give the boss time to whittle away at your units)

for this event i believe both bosses are physical types which is great because in comparison to magic def theres a LOT of really good physical guard options, however if you dont have any magic offense 4*s i really do suggest trying to bruteforce it with a physical team since in my own experience initial shion and gui have been......struggling :,) and est just barely manages to hit my "respectable damage" quota even with shiranuis buffing

kent and asahi are really good defense units since they have evasion (moon on both of them), and in the case of needing to pick off enemies in the back DATEN mikage brings them to the front in his moon, railway hollow damages + debuffs the enemy 3rd from the front in his initial + sun, i believe the recent camus attacks enemy 3rd from the front in his moon, and going off that baseline if you can recognize the "mae kara 3" skim reading chars skills you can find more chars similar

im not sure how AoE dps manages? i personally prefer big single target damage over medium AoE damage since slow and steady Doesnt win the race in revenge bosses (slow and steady = the boss starts revving up its skill more and wipes your team) but it might work! who knows

i do have a friend whos in a ymkr discord so i asked if anyone in theres found a nice team comp but since im not in it myself since i dont like being Perceived:tm: i cant really offer advice as of rn, but at the very least this mightve been a bit helpful? unfortunately at some point revenge bosses become impossible for f2p/people who save exclusively for one char, so if youve made a comp that just barely gets close to doing so even when youre actively playing (i.e. no auto and trying to strategize skill timing) it may just be an issue of "my current units just Cant do this one" which kinda sucks if i can be honest since a lot of the meta so far have been solely limited gachas i.e. sweetfes kuchen and its Very disheartening trying to find strats and seeing them insist you have to have him

After spending much of my childhood at Asahi’s home, I would eventually return my village at the age of ten with my mother.

The reason? To begin my full time training as a member of the Shadow Clan.

Honestly… I wasn't looking forward to it...

MIKAGE : (Is this village really safe?)

Perhaps it was simply because I had lived so peacefully in the kingdom of Kobai for so long…

…But even as a child, I somehow knew... that this village was falling behind the times…

MIKAGE : (Sure, the war is still going on but... every nation was getting… what was the word? Weary?)

MIKAGE : (Whatever comes next, especially with someone like Asahi leading, seems likely to be more peaceful than now, at least.)

When that happens, what will become of those who can only live in the shadows of the village?

MIKAGE : (Me included, perhaps.)

Feeling too lazy to think, I reluctantly gave myself to my training. Even as my motivation remained… practically nonexistent…

Unfortunately… It seemed I had a talent for all these shadow techniques…

VILLAGE HEAD : A talent indeed.

MIKAGE : Huh?

VILLAGE HEAD : Strive forward in your training, child. The future of the village rests upon you.

MIKAGE : (This is bad...)

Call it a hunch but I suddenly had the feeling that if things continued like this… I’d be stuck living a chore-filled life thanks to the head of the village very, very soon…

MIKAGE : (I’m not for dealing with all that crap… So what do I do about it...)

After some time thinking about how to get out of my duties to the village, I decided that, when I was about 15 or so, I needed to go on a… “journey of enlightenment” so to speak. Citing the need to hone my skills further or whatever convenient reason would actually get me out of the village.

Persuading the head of the clan was tough, but with my father's support, I managed to obtain permission. And so, I set out on my journey alone.

MIKAGE : (Ahh… Nothing like an undisturbed nap... Pure bliss…)

This was definitely the life. While I was still expected to respond to my village’s summons, it was much more easygoing than being stuck in the village itself.

MIKAGE : (I am kinda hungry though… But there's no way around that…)

I spent much of my days in this blissful stupor.

And then one day… As I was having my usual midday nap, a carrier pigeon arrived.

MIKAGE : (Oh, so this must be a report from the village?)

I untied the message attached to its leg and read its contents.

MIKAGE : (They want me to help in the war... Ugh, what a pain. Wait, what…?)

MIKAGE : (Kobai Kingdom has been invaded by the neighboring regions!?)

And it sounded like they were in dire straits, too… Many of their more prominent nobles, renowned warriors, even our own clan were under attack...

I arrived to Kobai Kingdom as swiftly as I could...

But my journeys had taken me far… Far too far… And by the time I’d finally arrived… The war was already over…

As I approached the estate where I spent most of my childhood, I saw a figure that brought back nostalgic memories.

But something was… Different… His eyes… They were vacant… And his body was… Too small for his frame... There wasn’t a single trace left of the vitality he once had in his youth...

MIKAGE : (Asahi? Is that really him…?)

He sat by the window, entirely lost in a reverie of his own thoughts, and remained entirely unaware of my presence…

MIKAGE : (If only I had arrived sooner...)

MIKAGE : (No… That's conceited of me. It's not like my presence would have changed anything…)

MIKAGE : (Not if they still lost even with Asahi to guide them...)

Despite this my heart felt anchored down in my chest….

Clasping my trembling hands to suppress these overwhelming emotions, I turned my back on Asahi without a word...

And so it was, that I returned to my former life…

Wandering around alone… Engaging it my midday bouts of rest... And occasionally fulfilling missions sent from the village…

But… But each new horrific scene I bore witness to… Asahi's broken and emaciated figure haunted my thoughts...

Was there truly no easy way to life?

If only there was, then everyone could live a better life. The kingdom, and all those who perished...

To live a life where you can't enjoy what you love, and can't freely laugh in the company of others—

Its absurd, isn't it…?

I wonder how many pull-ups he’ll do?) MIKAGE : Wow....Is he still working out? How does he do it? ASAHI : Twenty-nine...Thirty...Woohoo! Well, I'm going to take a break now. EMMA : Good job, Asahi. It's always amazing how easy you make it look! MIKAGE : Why don't you learn how to do pull-ups yourself instead of just observing if they’re so easy? ASAHI : Oh, you want to work out with me, Emma? When we entered the ruins, we were met with a cloud of dust. The amount of dust told us that no one had entered the ruins for a long time. WELCK : What the heck!? EMMA : The door! CROW : That's a nice trick! The door locked behind us. Guess we aren't getting back out that way. MIKOTO : Mikage, I want a light now!

EMMA : Wait. I'll get the lantern out― MIKAGE : No, keep that for yourself. There are candlesticks lined up all around, so as long as there's a spark, I can light them. EMMA : How can you see so well in the dark? Using fire, Mikage ignited the candlesticks and the surroundings became dimly lit. WELCK : Oh, you have brightened the place up! CROW : If air is flowing, then there must be an opening somewhere. No worries about running out of oxygen for now. So far, so good, huh? EMMA : Crow, what's wrong? CROW : There were a lot of candlesticks on display. It could be a trap― EMMA : Eh? WELCK : What is that sound? It hurts my ears! CROW : I knew it! EVAN : It's coming!

From the depths of the ruins, a growling noise sounded out. EVAN & WELCK & MIKOTO : What the hell is that!! It was a huge humanoid machine about four meters tall. And clearly hostile toward us. CROW : The guardian of the ruins, I guess. Not leaving any time to be surprised, the machine raises its fist in the air. EMMA : Crow!! CROW : Woah! What a flashy welcome! You're big and fast, aren't you?

EVAN : Get out of the way, stay back! What the hell is this fucking thing!? CROW : I guess even a blade can't get through it. This thing looks tough. CINIS : Probably a golem powered by magical science. EMMA : What? CINIS : Magical science is the art of circulating magic, in the absence of a sorcerer. That's why it is so strong. It's like a defensive buff in a game. CROW : I should have brought my new shotgun that Lagoon recommended! EVAN : This is no time to be excited! EMMA : (It's not safe here.) EMMA : Evan, Mikoto! Please, can you help us? CROW : Let's do this, Evan!

EVAN : Ugh…I don't want to, but it's better than being crushed, I guess… MIKOTO : I am a noble fellow, aren't I? My subjects alone are sufficient to defeat this insolent― EMMA : Mikoto-sama is the true lord! He will protect us all! MIKOTO : Hmm? EMMA : We, your subjects, are so proud of your majestic figure that we are inclined to respect you and bow down to you! Right, Demon King? CINIS : Hmm? Ah! Oh! I think you're right! EMMA : (He read the room!) MIKOTO : Kuhahaha, even the Demon King bows down to me! You shall all receive my protection!! MIKAGE : Yeah, thanks. WELCK : Emma. You can rest assured that I will protect you. EMMA : Thanks, Welck! CROW : Damn! Is it working at all!? MIKAGE : It's a little beat up, but it doesn't seem to be intimidated at all.

MIKOTO : Damn you, you little brat! Bow down before me at once!

EMMA : (This is just going to exhaust everyone. What should we do?) EVAN : … Hmm? CROW : What's up, Evan? EVAN : There's some sort of glowing stone embedded in the back of this golem or whatever it is. CINIS : A glowing stone, huh? EMMA : Do you have an idea!? CINIS : It's hard to tell without footage, but that glowing stone’s probably a magic stone. It must be the source of the golem’s power! EVAN : So if we destroy it, it will stop the golem! Let's go, Crow! Don't drag me down!
