Out of what you’ve written so far for ylsg, what scene has been your favourite to write?

From the scenes I’ve posted, it will definitely have to be the August conversation between Jonah and Genevieve. I was so nervous that it would come off as cheesy and forced, so I worked really hard on the flow and progression of that conversation.  

What was the very first idea/inspiration behind ylsg?

There was a saying that was floating around Tumblr that said: “friends can break your heart too”. I want to show that it’s not always romantic interests that can accomplish this, sometimes it comes from the people you least expect it from.

What’s one bit of feedback you received that really stood out to you?

Any feedback my beta readers give is like gold to me. @haaaaaaarrry always corrects my sentence structure which I appreciate so much! @drivingmekiwi helps me a lot with my word choice, placement, and plot. She’s the only reason why my descriptions are smooth. My creative writing teacher also told me to write every single day. It doesn’t have to be a 10k chapter, it can be only 5 words, but the point was to write, write, write! Oh and let your writing be ugly!

Who are three authors you admire?

Idk if this asks for fic authors or non-fic authors, so I’ll mix them in! I love @harryonstage @cheesewithchips @harryscribbles @harrysdodgyankles for fic. I admire Toni Morrison, reading more from Nicole Dennis-Benn, and I’m starting Hanya Yanagihara’s work.

Which side character is your fave to write? 

This is such a hard question! I think Jonah is my favourite because he’s inspired by someone I know. I used to tutor a boy for math, science, and english and we had a few good conversations. His personality made me laugh so much.

Anon! let’s talk about what being friends with Harry would be like.

There are definitely Sunday mornings where he’s behind the stove frying eggs and shaking his hips to whatever is on the radio. It’s quiet nights watching t.v in a dark room; he would chuckle at the parts which have no humour and in that moment, you don’t get it––goes totally over your head. But then you’re thinking about it days later and something clicks into place. He’s clever, he thinks from a perspective that isn’t quite crystal clear, it requires you to grab your shovel and dig a bit deeper. There are moments when you catch him looking at you while you’re in the middle of mundane tasks. He would have certain smiles that you have memorized. You especially hate the ones that tell you he knows something that you don’t. He saw you favour a certain brand of chip bag at a grocery store once, so he keeps an extra in his kitchen cupboard. He would give you shirts because it’s such an entirely altruistic act that he doesn’t think twice about. He would smell like sunshine and fresh air. His gentle eyes and kind lips would be dependable and sure.

He would be a great friend.

Shan the new chapter was so good! What the hell happened between them? Were they friends or were they mooore ( you have to read this in the tune of change my mind obvs)? Why did harry leave?!?! Also I am loving the whole dynamic between the friends! Every new chapter is raising new questions in my mind rather than answering them!!!!!!!

SHAN!! I just finished reading part one and i'm in LOVE :D I love the way you write, the details say so much. I'm dying to know what happened between Harry and Gen... also that scene with the tea bit really hit me so hard. And I love that Liam and Zayn are in this too! AND to top it all off, Maia Mitchell is your fc and i am soooo in love with her. ps this is p from my main dfjhgfg :D x

hi shan!! i've been busy this previous week with a couple of exams so i'm sending you this ask now, i finally caught up with ylsg3 and can i say you killed me with it? this line right here "denial was a wicked witch that masked what lay in front with a dozen spells" wOWOw the talent!! the angst, the fucking tension between genevieve and harry had me on the edge of my seat. i can't wait to read more about them!! and the preview for part 4! i'm so so excited for it!!!1!
