Rey, a quirky elementary school teacher, moves into an apartment loft with four men. Hux, who is an overly confident ladies' man. He is a successful marketing associate in a female-dominated office. Poe, a cocky and driven former athlete who works as a personal trainer. Finn, a very loyal and protective friend, also a cop and Poe's boyfriend. Ben, who works as a bartender.
Can this dysfunctional group handle the "adorkable" new girl?

Mexic-Arte Museum is pleased to announce YLA 22: ¡Ahora!, the twenty-second installment of the Museum’s annual emerging Latinx artist exhibition. Guest curated by Alana Coates, YLA 22: ¡Ahora! features eight artists from across Texas confronting prominent issues of the contemporary Latinx experience in the United States.
YLA 22: ¡Ahora! arrives at a time of a complex socio-political climate in the U.S. This includes an administration with a vehement focus on the Mexican border, widespread economic inequalities, increased racial tensions, and subsequent hate crimes on the rise. Within this context, eight emerging artists delve into personal negotiations of being Latinx today. The foci of gender confines, issues along the U.S./Mexico border, and power disparities in the world are at the core of their practices.
Featured artists for YLA 22 include: Nansi Guevara (Laredo, Texas), Daniela Cavazos Madrigal (Laredo, Texas), Mark Anthony Martinez (San Antonio, Texas), Michael Martinez (San Antonio, Texas), Paloma Mayorga (Austin, Texas), Andrei Rentería (Chihuahua City, Mexico/ Presidio, Texas), Ashley Mireles (San Antonio, Texas), and José Villalobos (El Paso, Texas).

Mexic-Arte Museum was delighted to host the Young Latinx Artists 22: ¡Ahora!, guest curated by Alana Coates, and Capricho, a project by Mark Menjivar this summer! Leading Glasstire’s Top Five, to a lively write up in the Huffington Post, and insightful artist interviews with Mitú, YLA 22 generated buzz and gave the art world something powerful to talk about. Dealing with themes of identity, community and socio-political issues, YLA 22 touched on timely topics and inspired dialogue amongst viewers. Be sure to check out Mexic-Arte Museum’s artist interviews, produced by ZGraphix Productions, to learn more about each artist!
Mark Menjivar’s Capricho shined light on the importance of archiving the history of our community through a nostalgic and elegant photography project, and even assisted the public in producing meaningful projects of their own through a creative workshop. If you wish to learn more about Menjivar’s project, you can check out his project online here.

YLA 22 and Capricho Exhibitions Generate Buzz on Opening Weekend
Visitors at the Opening Reception of YLA22: ¡Ahora! and Capricho, 2017. Photo by Breezy Ritter.
From leading Glasstire’s Top Five, to a lively write up in the Huffington Post, and insightful artist interviews with Mitú, Mexic-Arte Museum’s twenty-second Young Latinx Artists exhibition gave the art world something great to talk about! On Friday, July 14th during the exhibit’s opening reception, the galleries at the Museum hummed with conversations of artworks presented in YLA 22: ¡Ahora!, guest curated by Alana Coates, and Capricho, curated by Mark Menjivar.
Over 350 visitors came out for the opening reception of these two exhibitions, adding to the Museum’s record for number of attendees at an opening reception. Intrigued by artworks that deal with pertinent social topics such as gender restrictions, immigration, U.S./Mexico border relations, and cultural identity, attendees visited with YLA 22 artists, stirring conversations and inspiring social media posts. Visitors also reminisced about the sense of comfort and nostalgia brought forth by photographs featured in Capricho.
A special performance by Austin alternative rock band, Tiarra Girls, filled the intimate visual art space with lively vibes. Together with refreshing frozen beverages generously provided by Dulce Vida Tequila, and tasty Vegan antojitos by Cool Beans, Mexic-Arte Museum enjoyed hosting yet another successful opening reception. YLA 22: ¡Ahora! and Capricho will be on exhibit through August 27, 2017. Be sure to check out these two exhibits and see the exhibit everyone is buzzing about!

On Saturday afternoon, Mexic-Arte Museum hosted the YLA Members Brunch specifically geared towards continuing conversations between the YLA 22 artists and Museum Members. Delicious Vaquero Taquero breakfast tacos, and generously donated pastries from Quack’s 43rd Street provided the perfect aperitif for an intimate Artist Talk following the brunch. The Artist Talk began with an introduction by Guest Curator Alana Coates, who described her curatorial and selection process. Each artist shared insight into their respective artworks, artistic processes, and inspiration behind their work. As the tour came to a close, visitors applauded the artists with appreciation for their boldness in creating thought-provoking art, which in turn set the stage for art lovers to have educational, interpersonal, and necessary conversations. Whether it was a general topic of policy, or plucking a personal string of identity, YLA 22: ¡Ahora! has a piece for every visitor to experience. To learn more about the artists, check out our YLA 22 ¡Ahora! artist videos on the Mexic-Arte Museum Youtube channel.

YLA 22: ¡Ahora! Opens in July
On July 14th Mexic-Arte Museum opens the twenty-second annual Young Latino Artists exhibition. I congratulate all the artists in this year’s exhibit, ¡Ahora!, as well as our Guest Curator, Alana Coates. I also recognize and thank the Museum staff team working in all other aspects to deliver a professional museum experience. YLA 22 reflects on today – on now, as the title states - where artists tackle a multiple array of social, economic, cultural geographic, and gender problematics that perplex reason and threaten human dignity. The continuing conversation of these issues broadens our views and stimulates dialogues for solutions. Art inspires and beautifies our lives, but also assists in breaking down barriers and building a better community for all of us. I thank the artists for reaching out to create works that strive to construct a better world for today and tomorrow. Please join us at the opening reception and programs, and visit the exhibition!
