Rallying around a few key figures to take down is good for essay narrative and to spread word about shitty people, but the thesis of the essay surrounding the ethics of plagiarism and "content" are so important and effective. Like, sure I hate Somerton and Internet Historian or whoever now, but the video also left me with a deeper appreciation of my voice as a writer because unlike those idiots, it's honest and my own. You should come out of that video with an appreciation for original artistic expression more than a hate boner for some guys.

I feel like those of us who are longtime Video Essay Enjoyers™ have been aware something was suss about James Summerton (I remember when Lawrence called out Summerton for stealing their Hannibal essay years ago) for a while. But I think it's cynical to reduce Hbomberguy's vid to just a "dunk" when it's more of an odyssey railing against how influencer and content culture devalues the work of culture critics, academics, and activists. As Harris said, it's not a problem exclusive to Summerton, but a corrosive attitude baked into late capitalist "content" culture. The video is a clear exploration of the consequences of all media and art being flattened into "content" creates a system where the labor of marginalised creatives and storytellers are exploited and stolen by people with more privileges and resources. As someone who has witnessed rich tiktokers quote articles and posts I've written verbatim without credit to make money from their 1000s of followers, this video hit super hard for me. From James Summerton claiming the works of dead gay activists, to Charli D'Amelio building a career from stealing dances created by Black tiktokers - plagiarism is often inseparable from discrimination and exploitation of labor rights. Harris' video is about how the nature of influencer content culture has further exacerbated the exploitative systems that already existed, wrapped up as YouTuber drama analysis. But I hope people don't miss the forest for the trees and remember you should always be citing your sources, fact checking, and be very wary of people who don't. And for the love of God, please stop getting your information exclusively from video essays, tiktoks and podcasts.

I think James Somerton might be the most disappointing person I've ever seen be called out for something he did wrong.

Like I'd love to see the dude take the rightful expose of what he did wrong in stride and work on making it better for everyone he hurt. Recognising his mistakes and just becoming a better person.

I'd even like to see him make youtube videos that are not completely plagiarised after all is said and done. Those videos would probably be kinda bad but like yknow they would be his and we could all be proud of him together.

He just can't help himself though. We're on his second suicide attempt mention at this point after he's put a suicide note on twitter, and I hope he hasn't killed himself of course but I'm ngl I don't believe him at all.

In his last apology he implied that it is physically impossible for him to do anything else but youtube by making up a story about how he was fired explicitly for a having disability for a normal media job, in his home country of Canada. Like yeah sure dude but it also says a lot that he needs to imply that there is no other job opportunity he has available to him other than youtube.

He's going to keep trying every avenue to claw back into the role he was before everyone discovered how much he plagiarised. The "suicide note" is just the same shit, he can't get his authority back right now or gain the trust back from his audience. So he's just shooting for sympathy.

It is going to be exhausting hearing about this guy in the months to come. The worst part is that this is ultimately hurting him more than anyone (except arguably Hbomb and Jessiegender). Whatever sympathy he gains from this is not gonna bring his viewers back, there is no strategy here where this sympathy eventually leads to gaining people's trust.

Then further down the line when he really does need sympathy for something?? It's not going to be there.

I have so many little mini-tangents about James that I cut out just because I thought if I talk about this, I feel like I’m just being mean. Kat felt very strongly about the misogyny section. Initially, I thought it should be a smaller aside, but as we kept looking, we realized this was a pattern of behavior that needs to be talked about. There’s a lot of other stuff we worried was poisoning the well. At the beginning of that section, I talked about how I’ve always had trouble watching his videos because they’re full of mistakes, and also he used to aggressively promote himself at me. He followed me on Twitter and linked me all of his videos. And then eventually when I didn’t respond, he unfollowed me. It’s very strange, and I decided not to talk about that. Even when you’re dealing with a vile person, if you talk about it wrong, you come across as vindictive, and I genuinely have no vendetta against James."

i think i'm just gonna list the things i liked and didn't like

i don't like how persistent and insistent adrien/chat noir is for ladybug. again, i really think it's a very scary and dangerous pattern to teach children. obviously anyone of anyone gender should respect the person they like and their boundaries, but esp teaching young boys that they need to respect young girls's boundaries and bodily autonomy (whether either of them stay that way later in life).

i did however think plagg's sad face in adrien's bag was very funny.

i'm annoyed that, like with master fu decoding the grimore, or the fact that kim swims and has a a close friend who's crushing on me, we don't get any hints that kagami fences with adrien until this episode. bc last we saw, she had been defeated and then akumatized.

i thought marinette chatting with her friends was a cute little scene, but it's kind of soured by the fact that 1) all they talk about is adrien (so it doesn't pass the bechdel test) and 2) her friends don't even listen to her when she says she thinks they're just meant to be friends

honestly, yknow, i just didn't like this episode. which is not surprise. i just didn't like the set-up or the premise. again, i think under a better writing team and creator, the love square could work. i might still be annoyed with it, but maybe i would be less annoyed if it was actually done well on a technical level.

but i don't feel any stakes or miscommunication drama. all i see is a teen boy not respecting his partner's boundaries and who doesn't listen to marinette, and a teen girl who is unable to speak to her crush at all, and barely listens to him, either. like that's just. idk basic? and it feels dumb.

once again the pacing was absolutely shot because they had to spend half the episode setting up the love square, and the introduced love interest rivals. so what does that make that? if it's a love square, and luka is connected to mareintte, and kagami is connected to adrien,,,like some sort of creature i guess. the square is the face and the off-shoots are like. ears or smth. but anyway the fact that they wasted half the episode introducing and setting up the love creature means they had to rush through everything else.

instead of like. using other episodes to establish that beforehand.

someone in a server i'm in, after reading some of my posts on this, commented that this show is like french rwby and they were so on the money with that one. like all i can think about is hbomb commenting about how they could've set up so many new characters through naturalistic storytelling and instead decided to spend half their season on a prom arc.

ml is like that but like for everything. ondine makes a brief appearance in frightingale and suddenly we're supposed to know that she and kim are so close that she confesses her love to him??? the leap the audience has to make!!!

i also just was annoyed at both marinette and adrien the whole episode bc of how they acted at the skating rink. but i won't go into that here bc i think it's more personal than an actual critique. could it have been written better, absolutely. but i don't think i would've liked it all the same.

i do feel bad for luka. it's very weird they made him the way he is. why introduce him as a potential love rival when 1) adrien isn't going to pay attention bc he will always want ladybug and 2) luka isn't even going to fight for marinette? where's the drama in that?

that does remind me tho, i did want to complain about the fact that adrien doesn't listen to kagami. like she says something and he completely ignores her! she tells him it's not his technique, and 5 seconds later, he goes, "it must be my technique." like my dude. maybe if you like. actually listened to the girls who talk to you, you'd have better chances understanding them.

and it goes the same for marinette, too. luka asks if she wants to ride the subway back together and marinette completely ignores him in favor of watching adrien leave. she doesn't even indicate she heard him. and then what does she do? nothing! she just stutters and stumbles and it goes nowhere!!

also can i just say the fact that she was like, "let's bring the whole gang next time" and then instead of listing their classmates, who have been shown to hang out together--they went to the goddamn movies last time--she lists the two they were just with, and alya and nino. which, funnily enough, pairs them off quite nicely. /sarcasm

also now that i've started ice skating, the fact that both luka and kagami can do those moves on ice indicates way, way more practice than you would think. there's no way, based on their comments to the skating coach, that they would be able to skate that well if they did not get consistent practice. luka especially bc he lifts marinette!! adrien and marinette too. i've seen inexperienced ppl and first-timers, they are not that steady, nor that confident. even when they're with more experienced skaters. they move slow, they hang close to the wall. that was so unrealistic lmao. don't give ppl false ideas about how easy ice skating is man.

Yknow I was thinking about the new ATLA show and trying to figure out why I feel like it feels AI written at parts, even though I really doubt it is, and I had a realization after noticing a lot of the problems felt really similar to the errors plagiarists were making in the hbomb video. The unifying factor is a creator with just a complete inability to critically analyze the work they themselves are putting out. For plagiarists it's because they don't understand the material enough to know they're fucking it up, with LLMs it's because they don't have the ability to actually think, and with bad adaptations its either because the showrunners don't know what they're doing or because they're being bogged down in corpo studio bullshit, while still having to hold to the form they took from the original.

my first one is astralspiff— he’s mainly around the indie horror scene, fnaf n shit yknow, he’s known for speedrunning and breaking shit. I quite like him and his videos tend to be longer, so if you know anything about security breach and wanna watch one guy tear it up, I’d recommend watching some of his shit. although be warned if you start binging his content hes made like two dream dragon city jokes when he’s been sponsered (yes I know how many I’ve been keeping count. sorry for my droloisms) . he’s never said anything like outright bad against dream he’s just been like. “DREAM DRAGON peepeoStare” as far as I’m aware. I let him get away with it because it’s been just the tiniest slights and he’s very involved in speedrunning communities. let’s be real the dream cheated minecrfat speedrun thing is the least of our problems.

TWO. RTgame. he does variety, his vids are shorter. I’ve been watching him for I think five years so he has to go on this list. be warned he is MILDLY, very MILDLY, involved in the mcyt community as he’s been in mcc and used to make some videos with wilbur (fun fact tahts actually how I found out about wil, way back when)

docm. there is. things wrong with him. if you poke him he will sucker punch you. watching people mess with him is so fucking funny. you get someone to blow up one of his walls? he gives you ur number one sought after item on a silver platter and then it blows up ur friends front door. you fill his base with chickens as revenge and he not only puts some of those chickens into your base, but he also DUPES THOUSANDS OF DRAGON EGGS and then places like a few hundred all over u and ur neighbors bases. you challenge him to a robot fight and he builds additional robots after you both lose to blow you up. you write live laugh love in his base and he replaces it with a fancy sign with an animation and then it blows up ur rebellious camp outside his base…………you blow up his tunnel bore accidentally, beg for forgiveness, and he puts STATIC WITHER SKULLS, not wither heads, wither SKULLS, THE PROJECTILES that withers SHOOT AT YOU, up above ur base to just sit there menacingly. and then all that other stuff I just listed before the tunne bore thing, actually happens after with you and that other guy you blew up the tunnel bore with.

OKAAAAYYY tv shows. honestly a little while ago I watched like every marvel movie over the span of a week and a half just because I had the time to waste.

*centaurworld is. well it’s stupid. it’s mostly stupid but the VILLAIN… oh the villain of that show is. chefs kiss. if you have the time to watch it I’d recommended it but it will be. fairly stupid as times. fair warning.

*sweet tooth just got a second season, and I actually haven’t finished it because of Netflix shenanigans and also. as a Netflix original it will probably be cancelled. so I watched up to the end of season 2 episode six. it works as an overall happy ending except one thing that I choose to ignore ^-^

* the imperfects. I believe this how has been cancelled and does. have a cliff hanger ending? but like. the overarching plot was solved it just kinda pulled something out at the end that you can just ignore I think.
