okay so summary of his early life: his mom was mia and his dad had trouble settling down. yoo jaemin was a dreamer and when his dreams inevitably didn't work out he'd fall into alcohol and anger until he found a new idea to latch onto. they moved from place to place, expending the hospitality of their neighbors until they were eventually forced out again. it was one neighbor in particular, an elderly man who sold oranges from a fold out chair in the street, that started developing jaehoon's love of stories. the man would talk to jaehoon for hours, telling him the most fascinating and exciting tales. when he introduced jaehoon to the library and an entire building of stories, jaehoon's young life was changed forever.

things took a turn from the better when, after a drunken bar fight landed him in the hospital, jaemin met oh inah. she was one of his nurses and she was charmed by his sweet smile and big plans. they dated briefly and married quickly and jaehoon found himself suddenly part of a complete family that came pre-built with an older brother and a mom. he had trouble trusting that the situation was permanent, but after a couple of years of patience and effort from both his step brother and inah, he found himself truly happy for the first time in his life.

it was only a matter of time before jaemin once more started concocting big plans that ended up in disaster. after convincing inah to put her life's savings into helping him purchase a run-down building he'd planned to fix up, the building ended up collapsing and the investment was greater than what he could sell the land for. they were broke. after a few months of vicious fighting, jaemin finally dipped leaving his son behind.

inah didn't for a second make jaehoon feel unwelcome or like a burden despite her new situation. she made it clear he was her son, no different from her oldest. she focused on making sure he was okay in the aftermath even as she found herself struggling to make ends meet. jaehoon got his first job as a delivery boy at fourteen years old to help out how he could.

they moved into a tiny one room apartment - the boys shared the bedroom and inah slept on the couch. she picked up extra shifts at the hospital and did what she could to make sure her kids didn't want for much. but they were both old enough to know what was happening and jaehoon did his very best to stay near the top of his class in school and have enough energy to bring in some extra money.

after he graduated secondary school, he got a job at kyobo book centre and really found a place he was comfortable. his plan was to save up some money, do his military service, and then come back and go to university so he could become a teacher. but life has a way of not working out quite right. inah found out she was pregnant when jaehoon was twenty one years old, and she gave birth to oh hana was born when he was twenty two. the birth had some complications and after a couple of days inah passed away.

naturally, jaehoon was distraught. but he and his brother had a kid to take care of so he didn't let himself linger in the feelings for long and threw himself into work. what was meant to be a job for a few years ended up becoming something more permanent and he worked his way up to management pretty quickly. since then, keeping up the store, taking care of hana, and working on his own creative projects have been the things keeping him going while he tries to figure out how he can climb out of the hole again.

hana is basically his world she comes first before everything. he tries to keep her with a sitter when both he and his brother are working but sometimes funds don't allow for that and she ends up accompanying him on the job (she is very opinionated about new release picture books).

The current Yoo Joonghyuk would never hesitate for the sake of his purpose.' - see, this is a much more nuanced and empathetic description than 'lost his humanity' in the webtoon translation. like killing people for your own purposes is not just as human a thing to do as choosing to save other people. it always struck me as a particularly harsh way to word yjh's personality change, esp. when yjh is kdj's blorbo and kdj knows how yjh got to this point.....i think the webtoon in general tries to flatten kdj's low and high points to make him more plateable for a wider audience, which i noticed when comparing scenes side by side for my fic. which is exactly why i prefer reading the source material of stories over any adaptation - things get lost in the medium translation even with the best adaptations.

kdj specifically calls yjh a professional gamer. which is good because i literally can't see yjh streaming to any audience pre-scenarios except maybe for contract-mandated team streams. he can't perform on command and doesn't give a shit about entertaining anyone except maybe his family. bad karoke aside lol

'I liked, hated, grumbled, and cheered Yoo Joonghyuk on. That's why I stuck with Yoo Joonghyuk for over 3,000 chapters.' - translation of this line in the webtoon is a bit more flowery, but i like this barebones description. it's charming how utiltarian kdj is with everything he describes, truly a reader to the core

'Yet Kim Namwoon died and the others survived.' - huh. i guess yjh saw them through the window....but shouldn't they have seen him through the window when he was kicking down the door? maybe he shattered the window after his first kick and made it hard to see through, especially if the window has wire mesh

'I started telling the story. I told the story using as much concise, short, and accurate vocabulary as possible.' - yup, that's how kdj tells stories. at least he's honest about this.

Now that’s an epic game turnaround

It’s a sports tournament episode. You’ve seen this a dozen times in shows and movies from all over the world. This story is pretty universal. So how does Splash Star manage to make it resonant? Very carefully. Obviously, after 35 episodes, we’re invested in Saki and her friends, and want to see them succeed. They don’t waste time getting to the game, either, we jump right into it after the cold open and intro. And right off the bat (no pun intended), and similar to something Max Heart did once or twice, we see that their opponents are every bit as competent, because they get a run on YJH immediately.

Saki takes it personally because she’s the pitcher, but the captain, Izumida (who may have appeared before but has never been named) tells her to brush it off. They manage to get a triple out on the opposing team (see video) and Izumida takes a minute to further encourage Saki to relax and just play her best.

They proceed to the seventh and final inning with a score of 1-0, neither team giving an inch, and in the top of the inning they keep Ohnami Academy from scoring, so all Yuunagi has to do is score 2 runs in their at bat to win the game. Unfortunately, after Izumida makes it to first base, the next two batters strike out. Saki steps up to bat but gets two strikes. The pressure and tension at this point are off the charts, but she hits the third ball and starts running. Time slows down as she hits first base, thinking they’ve finally managed to turn the game around, but as she rounds the corner to run for second she sees Izumida just standing there between the bases, looking to the outfield, and she sees that the centerfielder has caught the ball, getting an out on Yuunagi and ending the game.

Yes, that’s right, after all this investment, you’re expecting a come-from-behind victory but instead they actually had the main characters lose their final game! How often does that happen? It’s a bold storytelling move and I love it. Sometimes you can try your hardest and still lose, whether due to personal blunder or just because your opponent was better than you. As Picard said: “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness, that is life.” (I’m not a Trekkie but that’s a good line)

Saki is distraught, because she was fighting her hardest to win for all the graduating seniors in their last game, but Izumida is happy that they had a great game, and tells her that even if they lost, there was still meaning and value in the match, a measure of her maturity. However, Kintolesky was in the audience, and he has other ideas. He finds Saki moping with Mai on the dugout bench after everyone else has left, and while he apologizes for intruding on their moment of weakness, he grills her for what he feels is a naive belief that there is meaning in losing. Saki gets mad at the insult, not towards her, but towards the upperclassmen she fought so hard for, and when they transform into Bloom and Egret she chews him out. Kintolesky is unmoved, and uses a liquid metal Uzainaa to thrash the girls about in an honestly impressive fight.

Bloom continues to retaliate against his reductive values, spouting the importance of setting high goals and doing your all to reach them. Progress of any kind is a plus! Kintolesky just doesn’t get it and he charges the girls himself, but Moop and Foop release the Spiral Rings, and Bloom and Egret use Spiral Heart Splash to destroy the Uzainaa. Kintolesky tries to block it but he realizes he can’t hold it back and retreats, honestly admitting that today was his loss and there’s no excuses to be made.

Afterwards, Saki heads off for the bus to return to school (why has it been sitting there for hours, it’s dusk now and it was broad daylight when the game finished), but she decides that to prepare the team for next year they should all run back to school instead! Izumida likes this idea and has them do it, and we close on this lovely shot of the team.

I think the biggest flaw of this otherwise fantastic episode is that we’ve never met Izumida before. In FWPC, we met the lacrosse team captain Yumiko on multiple occasions. Even if she wasn’t very prominent, she was established and named. I can’t recall Izumida appearing before this, certainly not named. I suppose this is related to the lacrosse team not having an apparent coach so the captain was more prominent, while Ms. Shinohara takes the mentor role in this season. Anyway, while I respect Saki’s conviction to win the game for Izumida and the other seniors, it would have meant more to me if we were also invested in Izumida herself.

I suppose I also have to criticize Saki’s specific motivation. She feels that she is letting down the graduating seniors at YJH by losing the championship game. But the other school also has graduating seniors who have also worked hard to get to this championship game, and also want to score a victory. They aren’t villains, it’s is a sport, and there will always be winners and losers. Someone has to lose. In this case, it was YJH. I’m not trying to “both sides” this too hard but I think Saki is investing too much into the idea of winning for the sake of her team rather than trying her absolute best to have a good game between opponents who have proved their strength by making it this far. (That sounds like something Kintolesky would say) It’s a lesson Nagisa actually figured out in the latter half of Max Heart.

How about some easter eggs? They seem to have reused a background from FW/MH because in several shots you can see students in the Verone uniforms.

There’s also a lot of reused animation in this episode, from within the same episode but probably also other softball eps. I haven’t paid close enough attention to the various shots used throughout the show, but in this episode I saw repeat pitches, swings, and running to bases. Sometimes they mirrored the shot to cover up the recycling. Also there’s only one still frame of the opposing school’s students cheering that they use two or three times.

What new animation there is for the softball games is average to low quality. The overhead shots are bereft of detail, making it hard to figure out what’s going on. The close-ups are fine. They seem to have put most of the budget into that fight with Kintolesky and the uzainaa, which is really dynamic and fluid. There are some wonderful facial expressions in this one, so be sure to check the gallery.

On the music side there’s extensive use of Saki’s march theme, which is normal for softball episodes. It really gets you in the mood.

On the whole it’s a good episode that could have been improved slightly in a few areas, but it bucks the trend of having the protagonist’s team win their championship and I appreciate that a lot. Next time, Mai is under a lot of stress from her peers and I’ve got some things to say about that. Look forward to it!

It's been days since Y/N had found out about the grim reaper. Often described as a skeleton in a black hood with a scythe. The personification of death. 

"I don't take souls. I guide them." Those words kept repeating in her mind. Guide them where? Can he do something to stop them from dying? How did he even become a grim reaper? There's a lot of questions she wanted to ask him. Will it be possible to see him again? 

The question was answered when the medics rushed a pregnant woman inside the emergency room. "Inform the Obstetrics department." She told one nurse as she checked the pupils of the woman, no response. "Call Doctor Kim." She told another nurse as she checked the woman's nerves and pulse rate. It's there but weak. 

When Doyoung came to the emergency room, she narrated her observations and he just nodded. He instructed that they will operate on her first before removing the baby. "I'll handle this." Y/N nodded, walking out of the emergency room when she saw him. 

Her first instinct was to glance at the nurses coming in the doors who didn't pay attention to the man. He's here for her soul. "Who?" she asked quietly. 

"Both of them." Her eyes widened in surprise. She cannot let that happen. 

Y/N returned to the emergency room that surprised Doyoung. "Call the Obstetrics Department. Save the baby first." The other doctor called for her but she shook her head. "Doyoung, please." He sighed before nodding that made the nurse run outside. 

The girl heaved a sigh, walking away from the emergency room once again and spotting the grim reaper leaning by the wall. She stood beside him, leaning on the same wall. "Why aren't you inside?" 

"This is not my surgery." She whispered, careful not to attract any attention to her. She bit her thumb as the OB doctor came into the Emergency Room, "I hope they'll be safe." Her phone vibrated, a beep from another patient asking for a doctor's help. "I'll come back. Please, whatever happens, don't leave yet. Wait for me." The guy nodded and she rushed out of the emergency room to attend to another patient. 

Why is this so difficult? She knew they'll both die yet she's powerless. She can't even do anything to save them. Is this how that man feels every time he's meeting a soul? And yet, there are a lot of people on the verge of dying. She can't get too distracted with just a simple case. 

She was transferred from one patient to another, even the head doctor asked for a meeting with her that when she returned to the emergency room, the operation was still ongoing. To her surprise, he was still leaning on the same spot with a glum look on his face. "What happened?" 

"You did well." What? "I have a soul to guide." They died? Then what did she do well? 

And he was gone before she could ask anything. 

The emergency doors opened and an incubator was brought out by the nurse with a tiny person inside. The baby looks alive. What does that mean? Doyoung came out of the operating room, shaking his head. A gasp escaped her throat. Why is she so surprised? She saw this coming.

He squeezed her shoulder in a comforting hold, "But you saved the baby, Y/N." Is that what he meant when he said that she did well? "You did well." 

No, she didn't. She wanted to do better, wanted to do the best. Doing well doesn't save lives, it kills people. 

And she knew, she needed to do her best. 

The coffee shop seemed different now, she's now nervous heading inside unlike other times when she just casually wanted some coffee. The guy manning the counter called for the barista who turned to her. He gave a small smile, before asking the other to switch places. "Hi." He greeted and she smiled timidly. "What are you going to have today?" 

Y/N lightly glanced at the menu but nothing registers in her mind. "What can you suggest? Probably something sweet." 

"Iced Caramel Macchiato?" She nodded and he took a large cup which made her revolt. "It's fine. It's on the house, you might really need it." She thanked him with a smile. "I'll deliver your drink, Barbara Gordon." Y/N grinned. Batgirl. 

She was playing with the napkin on the table when the guy handed her the cup of coffee and a pastry. "I didn't…" 

"It's a lemon cheesecake. It will balance the sweetness of the coffee. It's on me, don't worry." She gave him a timid smile, thanking him silently. "You look bad." Unconsciously, she held her cheeks. Does she? Is it that bad? "Day off?"

She nodded as he sat on the chair opposite her. "Did you send her off well?" 

The guy nodded. "She wanted to thank you for saving her baby." She does? "Is the baby a boy or a girl?" 

"A girl. The dad would always say that she looks exactly like her." He nodded, smiling at her. He has a nice smile. Heartwarming. Unlike the things he does. 

She sipped on her coffee and took a bite of the cheesecake, which she had to note tastes great, just to prevent her mouth from saying the words she wanted to say. He doesn't need to know that. She cannot let him know that. 

But the way he was staring at her made her mind feel at ease. He looks tired. How long has he been a grim reaper? Did he send a lot of souls away? "It must be hard for you seeing souls like that." There. She said it. "Knowing they'll die but you cannot do anything. I thought my job is hard but yours is just…" she stopped to look for the right word but there's only one thing she can think of now. "heartbreaking." 

"I'm used to it by now but that's true, it feels heartbreaking when you can't do anything." He said, crossing his arms while leaning on the chair. "Watching them die makes you feel…"

"Powerless." They both said at the same time. 

She can't believe that she'll feel deep empathy with a grim reaper. They're supposed to be scary but he's different. He feels hopeless, like her.

He leaned closer, elbows on top of the table. "Then let's do this, let's help each other." She raised an eyebrow at that. Help each other? "I can tell you which person is dying and you can help that person. Like what you did to that boy and the baby." 

That seems plausible. They can do that. They had done it before. But what about him? Will nothing happen to him because of this? "Will you be alright though? Your job is to guide them to the afterlife." 

A different expression was shown on his face, his eyes dilated as a soft smile formed on his lips. "I guess I'll have more paperwork. But it's worth it if we can save a person." He claimed. "You'll lessen my job." 

"And you'll lessen my guilt," Y/N whispered, nodding. There's no better way to do it but like this. Maybe they're really meant to meet. "I guess I'm going to work with a grim reaper." 

The guy laughed. A wonderful sound. Like music in her ears. "It's an honor working with you, Miss Doctor." He lent a hand for her to shake. "I'm Yuta, what's your name?" 

She raised an eyebrow at that but shook his hand, nevertheless. "Isn't it bad to give your name to a grim reaper?"

Yuta smiled, nodding at her. "Smart." 

"So how do we do this?" She asked curiously, taking a bite of the cheesecake. He gestured at the teenage girl in her uniform, seated on the corner table. "What about her?" 

"She's been ordering the same Chocolate Frappuccino for days now." She nodded, listening attentively. "When I gave her the order today, it just felt weird. Like something bad will happen." 

Y/N lightly glanced at the girl. There's nothing peculiar about her, she seemed like a normal high school girl. So what might happen to her? And is she really going to die? She's too young. A sigh escaped her lips and she pouted when she returned to her drink, sipping a lot of her coffee. Why do people have to die?

The chimes of the door can be heard as people came inside the door. "I'll return to my job. I'll let you know if something happens." 

She transferred to the seat Yuta was earlier just to spy on the high school girl, making the guy shake his head. It was afternoon when the girl fixed her things and stood up that made Y/N follow her. She was about to go out the door when someone held her wrist, “What are you doing?” Yuta asked. “Are you seriously following her?” 

Y/N nodded. She needed to save her. “You’ll know where to find us, right?” And she was out of the door. Good thing the younger isn’t too far from the shop and she followed her quietly. Everything was fine. She seemed like a typical high school girl going to bookstores and stationery shops or stopping by cute boutiques to stare at the window display. Is Yuta playing with her? Or is it not happening now? 

The girl gave a sharp turn as she casually passed the small alleyway. There were guys, probably two or three, standing on the narrow street. Will it happen here? “Let go of me!” She heard a female voice followed by an echo of maniacal laughter. “Don’t hurt me, please.” 

She doesn’t need medical attention. She needed someone to save her. A superhero. 

Batgirl. Today, she’s batgirl. 

And with a heavy breath, she appeared in front of the guys. “Let go of her!” Where is this confidence coming from? “I’m going to call the cops.” Her eyes widened seeing one guy holding a pocket knife. She’ll get stabbed? A police siren can be heard that startled her, she never called anyone. 

“Nosy brat!” One of the guys claimed from behind her that shocked her. And she felt stinging on her side followed by blood staining her pastel blue shirt. “Unnie!” The high school girl called as she fell to the ground. 

She’s safe, that’s great. 

But fuck, it hurts. 

Maybe that was the reason why she can see the grim reaper. This is her death.

"A grim reaper calling an ambulance? You're one heck of a guy, Yuta Nakamoto." Johnny teased. 

The guy shook his head, looking at the girl seated outside the emergency room. "She was desperate," Yuta answered with a heavy sigh. "Are you here to take him?" 

The other grim reaper stared at his smartwatch which vibrated and showed a pinned location. "They're going to save him." He smiled then tapped the other's shoulder. "Thank you for giving me additional paperwork." 

"Dude, I'm sorry." Yuta shouted but Johnny just shook his head as he went out of the hospital, unnoticed by people around. He did another look at the girl on the opposite side of the door. She looked so worried. Should he tell her that the man is going to be saved? That she doesn't need to worry about anything? 

But this is not his business. 

Yet, he wanted to do the same thing she had done. To save a soul. 

Yuta doesn't even know how he became like this. His memories were erased when he started becoming a grim reaper but he remembers each soul he guided to the afterlife. 

He cannot leave the world even if he wanted to, even trying to kill himself a lot of times but Johnny would always come to him and give him twice the work that only annoyed him. "You've killed a lot of people while living on Earth as a human, Yuta. This is your punishment. Our punishment." he would always tell him. 

In the dark of the night, with a fire from burning houses illuminating the road he's walking on, Yuta would see dead bodies young and old. His right hand held a sword while the other hand was smeared in blood. Sweat was dripping on his forehead as embers filled the air, the crackling sound of burning resonating in his ears. The smell of blood filling his senses. 

A sense of pride crept up his chest seeing the countless bodies surrounding him. 

All done by him. 

Bodies killed by him. 

Lives lost because of him. 

Now, this is the punishment for his actions. But when can this stop? Didn't he send enough people to the afterlife to pay for the lives he took? 

"Yuta." a female voice can be heard. "Yuta, I love you." 

His eyes opened in surprise, realizing that he had fallen asleep with his head on the table. "Hyung, are you alright?" Jungwoo asked while changing in his uniform. "Are you sick?" 

Yuta nodded, rubbing his eyes then stretching his arms. "I'm fine. Sorry." 

"Hyung, if you want you can do the cashier today and I will make the drinks." The older nodded, head still fuzzy at the dream he had. He's used to seeing those dead bodies but what is that voice? A female voice? That's new. 

She loves him? Did he also kill her? Then he might be more vicious than he originally thought. 

The café isn't that crowded like regular days and Yuta was bored. Even his watch isn't even beeping. Are there really no deaths today? Or is it because of what he did last night? Is he done with grim reaper work? Are they kicking him out? Isn't that better? 

The bells of the door chimed and he quickly fixed himself to welcome the customer. The girl from last night. "Oh, you were the guy last night." She greeted and Jungwoo had to give him a questioning stare. "The old man is saved." He knows. "Thank you for calling an ambulance." 

"I'm glad he's safe." He whispered, looking uninterested. 

He just realized the weight of what he had done. He stopped a man to go to the next life, preventing him from dying. But until when? That man is going to die eventually. 

Will something happen to him just because of his one hasty decision? Will he get punished for this?

"I'll have an iced café latte regular," she said that made him snap back to his senses. He started inputting her order, getting a cup and a marker then asked for her name. "Diana Prince." 

What? Is she foreign? "Diana? Prince?" 

The girl giggled. "Diana Prince," she repeated. "Wonder Woman's name." Yuta rolled his eyes at that. He's used to this, people who don't give their true names when ordering coffee. But he's sure that one day she's going to be telling her name. And that's the day he knew she's heading to the afterlife. "Can I stay here for a while?" He nodded, there are a few customers anyways. 

He watched as she sat on the corner table, facing the window. She took out a book from her bag, as well as a phone, and put on earphones. A typical person in a coffee shop so he didn't bother. "Who is she?" Jungwoo asked which made Yuta shake his head. "I thought you knew her since you were together last night." 

Again, Yuta rolled his eyes. "I just bumped into her." He handed the cup to Jungwoo and he read the name written asking if she's foreign. "It's Wonder Woman." 

"She might be Wonder Woman." The younger guy teased. After last night, she might be. 

He handed her coffee; even taking note that instead of reading the book, her eyes were closed, and was focusing on the music on her earphones. She thanked him with a smile then stared outside the window. Yuta shrugged. Really typical. 

What's weird is that she stayed inside the shop for some time. Doesn't she have important things to do? But then, she looked rather posh and sophisticated so maybe she's someone who isn't that busy in life. Maybe a rich girl with no responsibilities. Must be nice. 

A vibrate can be felt in his pocket and he stared at Jungwoo knowingly. The younger nodded since there are no customers and besides, this is in Yuta's contract when he agreed to work in the coffee shop. 

He quickly removed his apron and thanked the younger profusely, heading out the door. He was about to open it when another hand held his, the girl from before. "Sorry, I'm in a hurry." she said then opened the door that startled him. 

Yuta rushed to where his motorbike is, checking where the location of his client is. 

A hospital. 

So he's getting clients in that place now? Someone is indeed punishing him. 

From his side mirror, he saw how the girl desperately flagged a cab. He doesn't need to bother about her right now. He needed to do his job. 

And fuck this job!

author’s note: I’m sorry for some medical inconsistencies. The medical practices are just something that I just researched in the internet or watched in snippets of medical dramas. Special thanks to @mel-yjh​ for answering my medical related questions. 

The moment Y/N entered the hospital doors, she immediately tied her hair in a ponytail. Doyoung is waiting for her with a clipboard at hand. "Sorry. I know it's your day off but the patient doesn't want a male surgeon." He said while walking to the elevators. "And all the other female surgeons are unavailable at the moment." 

"What happened? Is she scared of guys?" 

Doyoung nodded. "A trauma in guys. She was sexually assaulted. We didn't know so the head doctor gave her to me." He explained that made her nod. "It's an easy surgery. You'll do well." 

And that's the assurance she needed right now. 

Once the elevator doors opened, a female nurse was running to them. "Doc. Doc. The patient…" Y/N had to look at Doyoung before running to the emergency room. 

The machine was already beeping signaling that her vitals are unstable. The whirring sound of suction can be heard, she's losing a lot of blood already. This is bad. They should have waited before doing a surgery. Doyoung was right, it is a simple surgery at first but the risks now are really bad. She needed to do something. 

She cannot let this patient die in her hands once again. 

Y/N isn't that smart, that was Doyoung. But she listens attentively in class and even does her best to learn about things that aren't taught to them. She thinks that was the attribute that convinced the head doctor to accept her in this hospital. 

She did her best to save the patient. Desperate to not add blood on her hands. "Doc, the vitals are already stable." She breathed hard in relief. 

She's safe. She's fine. You did it, Y/N. She kept saying to herself. The assurance she badly needed right now.

The patient is fine but the frightened feeling didn't leave her. She's so scared that something bad will happen. What if another complication happens? What if the surgery isn't as successful as she thought it was? What if she dies in her hands again? 

A chilling breeze passed her, sending goosebumps along her body. What is this she's feeling right now? When she looked up from the floor, she saw a man standing at the doors of the emergency room. The guy at the coffee shop. Ambulance guy. But wait, no one is allowed to enter this room. 

"What are you doing here? Only medical…"

"You can see me?" There was confusion both in his voice and expression. She nodded at the question. "You can really see me?" He asked once again then glanced at the watch on his wrist. 

His actions were odd. Why does he keep saying that? He's human. Of course, she can see him. "Doc." One of the nurses from the surgery called. "I thought you're leaving." She said that made her nod, staring at the man who was just looking at the two of them. "What are you looking at?" 

She can't see him? 

Y/N shook her head. "I'm leaving. Thank you for today. Great job." 

Is she crazy? She's seeing things that others cannot see? 

"Follow me." The man said. This is bad. She might be really crazy. But why is she even following him? 

Even if they were passing a lot of people, no one seemed to notice him. Whereas, some of them gave her a greeting or a smile. 

Is he really invisible? Is she the only one who can see him? 

And why are they suddenly on the rooftop? All alone? "Can you really see me?" 

"Can you stop asking that question?" She whispered. "What are you? Are you a ghost?" The man shook his head. "Maybe a figment of my imagination? Am I crazy?" 

"You're not." 

"You're scaring me." 

"I'm not here for you." Not here for her? What does he mean? He's here for someone else? Why? "Ahn Minjoo." He mumbled while staring at his watch. "Her pin is gone." 

Ahn Minjoo? Her patient earlier? "She's safe. She finished surgery." 

"You saved her?" Y/N nodded that made the guy sigh. "She's supposed to die." 

What the hell is this guy saying? Anger was bubbling inside her. "There are some complications but she's safe now. She won't die." How dare he say that her patient will die? "Ahjussi, who the hell are you?"

He shook his head. "Nevermind." He whispered then turned his back to her. "There's no soul to claim anyways." A soul to claim? What exactly is this guy? 

She still has a lot of questions. And before he could leave, Y/N held his wrist to stop him. A strong wind blew when their skin touched and she felt her head throbbed that instant. 

Her skin felt warm yet so cold. She could smell the faint scent of blood and hear metals scratching against each other, her vision blurred as a person held her in his arms. "Please save yourself," she whispered as her vision turned black. 

"Y/N," Doyoung called when she opened her eyes. "Are you alright?" She nodded, sitting up from the bed. 

She knew this place, even coming here a lot of times before. But why is she in a hospital room? "What happened?" 

The male doctor felt her forehead with the back of his hand. "You passed out outside the emergency room, Ms. Jang found you." She passed out? Outside the emergency room? "You didn't tell me you're sick. You have a high fever yet you have done surgery. That's amazing Y/N." 

"Is she safe?" 

Doyoung nodded. "She's fine. She's in recovery now."

She nodded. "I'm glad she's fine."

"Take some rest. You can call the nurses if you want anything." She giggled at that, arguing that she's not a patient. "You're not. But I don't want death to come to you, Y/N. So take care of yourself." Doyoung closed the lights and gently closed the door that left her alone. 

She felt a sharp pain in her head as a silhouette of a guy's back flashed on her mind. 

Death. 

In the form of a man.

Next chapter will be longer, I promise. I’ve only written until chapter six, I think. And so far, the story is becoming really frustrating (I’m so bad in slow burn stories 😣) Feedbacks are highly welcomed. Please do tell me what you think although the story isn’t even progressing well. 😂

gonna do another quick skimthrough of the YJH intro before moving on:

I don't have anything to add here. I'm just putting it down for posterity when he inevitably goes through character development. Or retroactive hilarity when I find out that He's Just Like This.

adding on that, context included, this is just objectively an extremely funny way to introduce a character. poor kdj is but a couple of grapes.

wait, i missed this. why is it bad to encounter other regressors? yjh later states that he would have recognized kdj if he was one, too...

sir. while you are very beautiful, i am not buying this. you slaughtered that cabin full of people like 15 minutes ago, tops. how are you experiencing a moral quandry now. unless there's some kind of external factor he can't control, like a corrupting agent or an effect of his regressions that we don't know about yet. But this is also his first time doing that. Maybe he chose to do something drastic in order to change a catastrophic future outcome. After all, he's been through the sequence of events of the story at least 3 times so far, and he's clearly unhappy with both himself and how future events play out...but I don't see how slaughtering a subway car full of people would do anything. So, corruption maybe? Psychotic rampage? A conversation was getting really awkward and he wasn't sure how else to end it? Time will tell.
