because i am still obsessed with tyk and cannot let go of the fact that Mama Rong is just still apparently up there on the mountain holding a grudge against Ye Baiyi, have this image of: 

Ye Baiyi, post-canon and almost all grey-haired, sitting in the usual tea house with wenzhou. 

Wen Kexing is, of course, mid-rant about something while Ye Baiyi laughs at his bratty tone with all the confidence of a senior citizen. But he suddenly freezes, and Wen Kexing’s bloodhound-sense for weakness immediately narrows in on his distracted senior. 

“Oi!” he barks, rapping his fan on the table next to Ye Baiyi. “Old monster, pay attention!” 

But there is something odd in Ye Baiyi’s usual stony expression that makes Wen Kexing’s protests die on his tongue, at the same moment Zhou Zishu’s hand wraps around his flailing wrist. 

"Ye-qianbei?” But Ye Baiyi is already rising from the table. He does not reach for Dragon’s Back, resting quietly against the wall. His eyes are fixed on the open door.

A woman stands at the threshold to the inn. 

"You came down the mountain?" The crack in Ye Baiyi’s voice is both piercing and fragile. 

The woman simply nods once. She reaches for his face with hesitant fingers, for the grey at his temple. 

Ye Baiyi does not think of the family that sits behind him. He only thinks of two things - the sword he still carries, and the couple he tore apart. 

But there is no resentment on the woman’s face.

"A-yi," she says.  Ye Baiyi closes his eyes.

“Do you ever resent him for taking a wife?”

Ye Baiyi knows the way Wen Kexing likes to press on bruises, relishing in the ripples discomfort creates over the veneer of a pleasant evening. He’s watched the Ghost Valley brat work a a yellowing bruise back to a deep purple on Zhou Zishu’s body often enough to know that it’s as much a literal fascination as it is figurative. 

So Ye Baiyi knows not to take it personally, most of the time.

He lets the question sit in the quiet evening air, inhaling the scent of Zishu’s plum wine as he brings the cup to his lips. He, too, ruminates on the bruise. 

It doesn’t hurt, not in the way Kexing perhaps intends it to - for all the ways their relationship has developed and grown, the brat still tries to find the cracks in Baiyi’s composure. (He is, the old immortal supposes, trying to gauge the depths of his tolerance - where the patience finally frays.)

Baiyi lets his gaze roam over the courtyard, where Zishu lingers over the pin he is whittling and tries not to look like he is holding his breath.

Baiyi is reminded once again just how young these men are, and how unfathomable love can seem.      

“Do you?” he asks Kexing instead, pouring the er-shixiong of Siji Manor another cup.
