we need to stop talking about family and go back to the idea of community. even well meaning people go "the importance of family this and family that" and it's like do you realize that for entire groups of us family is where we were rejected, or downright abused?? why would we want to look at family beyond the need to process our trauma? (which a lot of us choose to do in private and in a safe space like therapy).
community is where we find a sense of belonging, people who support and love us, who care about our wellbeing, who celebrate with us or pick us up from hospital or tell us they're proud of us or help us deal with every day stuff. entire societies were built around the notion of community before the curse of the nuclear family was invented, and they had it so right
#i was asked to think about the importance of family in my writing workshop the other day and it rubbed me the wrong way#so i wrote about myself instead because i can't be bothered to give two fucks#but today i realized why it rubbed me the wrong way#cause the woman who runs the workshop is smart and educated enough to know better#yet she fell for the capitalist propaganda of the nuclear family too when she should have had us think about community instead#(i wasn't the only one who had trouble with it. other people also had complicated family histories)#i do believe in the importance of looking at our community of origin and our community of belonging#but that's a much wider notion that allows people the freedom to avoid the bits of their history that are raw wounds and focus instead on#the parts they can grow from#fuck the nuclear family capitalism is evil#now i just need to write a poem about this so i can read it at our next meeting and explain my feelings about it#alex txt
