Squid Game

Yes. I will be sharing my thoughts on this infamous Netflix series because why not? I did not sacrifice my sleeping hour and potentially missing assignments deadline just for me to not share it with you guys. But seriously, binge-watching a series with academic pressure hits differently. As I am sure this series won’t need an introduction, I’ll just provide the background a little bit. Squid Game is a 9 episode Korean series that went viral on social media literally a few days after the release.

I do understand the hype to be honest, it really does deserve all the hype. The contributing factor of it is the fact that the actress is a super-hot model that made her first debut in acting; Jung HoYeon. A fun fact, she is a best friend of Jennie from the global Kpop girl group BLACKPINK. She’s been the “It Girl” of South Korea since forever anyway and now she is getting the global recognition which is well-deserved by the way!

As much as I try to keep my reviews with no spoilers, sometimes I can’t help myself. I babbled way  too much. It's like I write every thought that runs through my mind – yes, I guess my writing skills are that way. That explains the constant topic derailments since I mostly talked about myself instead of the reviews.

Also, can we talk about how at this point it’s technically impossible to not watch any spoiler about this series? I’ve probably learned about the series more on Tiktok and Twitter than by actually watching it. Lucky for me though, I watched the series on the release date so if anything I could be one of those spoilers but I didn’t.

It is a thriller series and I think the scariest part of this series is on how realistic it is. I just know there are people that will willingly go if they had the opportunity to, considering how today’s world is run by capitalism. The first episode shook me because I obviously didn’t read the description of the series before I started watching it because when I tell you the way I gasped when the first killing was executed..

Essentially, the series is about a bunch of debtors or people that are struggling financially are contacted to join a series of games with a huge amount of money on the line for the winner. This series definitely shows you the human nature for survival and what money does to people when they are desperate.

The oxymoron of the series is the fact that they are playing children's games but it has deadly consequences, literally. People are dying from playing childhood games. What a way to ruin South Korean childhood memories. The seemingly innocent simple games are now being tied to violent deaths and that unexpected juxtaposition made me curious to watch the series until the end.

The lead character, Seong Gi-hun is an unemployed gambling addict who is portrayed as a kind and compassionate character to other players he is playing with. But I disagree. Because he could’ve been a good father to his young daughter but he chose to play deadly games, voluntarily?! He already lost custody of his daughter because of his incompetence and he can’t even be there for her daughter? I understood the tragic backstory of him being chased by loan sharks but that does not excuse risking his life to play games, if he died his daughter will be fatherless forever. Not that he was ever there for his daughter but his little daughter still sees him from time to time in the series.

Another character that caught my attention is Ali. Ali is a Pakistani underpaid laborer that is working in construction, and he came to South Korea with his wife and daughter to provide his family a better life. Long story short, he ended up dead playing in one of the games because he was tricked by another player that he trusted and respected. He even called his killer “Hyung” which means Brother. I lost my marbles when he died. If you watched the series, you will get my reference. But what messed me up is the fact that when Ali left his family to play the games, he didn’t inform his wife and daughter. Now that he ended up dead, his family will assume he abandoned them when he is literally the sweetest character ever and that made me so mad, and sad.

It is a well-paced and mesmerizing series in each episode with its emotional sentiments, dramatic and even comedic at a few scenes. The storyline ending is hinting towards Season 2 as there are unanswered plot points shown for the audience to look forward to. This series will keep you invested and on edge throughout all the episodes that you just couldn’t wait to watch all the episodes just to find out the ending is a cliffhanger.

In case you didn’t get it yet this series is not family or children friendly because the scenes are violent and gore. I even flinched at some points watching the series and that’s coming from me, an avid viewer of Final Destination and SAW. If you’re into suspense or thriller shows and you have been looking for a sign to watch Squid Game or not; this is your sign to watch it.

I wasnt going to answer any more asks about it, I was just gonna go bye bye and enjoy life as I did before I was a kpop stan (that is unless YG comes out and says it's a lie, which is what we're praying for on this side), but I figured since I'm hating on Jennie so much, I might as well give you an explanation.

And before anyone comments 'WOW YOU'RE SO OBSESSED WITH HER', I used to be a blink. Shocker, I know, but what a lot of you don't know is that I'm a YG stan, meaning I love all groups under YG. Blackpink were ANNOUNCED and I already loved them, that's right, pre-debut. I was a fan up until ddu ddu ddu era, after that it eventually went downhill.

Just a little background was needed.

Disclaimer: I absolutely adore Jisoo and Rosé is indifferent for me. My problem lies with the other two. Jennie especially, Lisa is more of a 'I don't like her attitude' kinda thing, I don't hate her.

Onto my essay we go.

1. The fact that she's a spoiled little bitch who got everything she wanted before, and still gets everything she wants now is appalling. Her family is filthy rich so she probably just woke up one day and said 'gee I want to be an idol, even though I have no skills that stand and I don't even live in Korea this seems pretty cool'.

The point here is that she always gets what she wants.

Don't believe me? Her nickname is YG's princess.

Still think I'm exaggerating? Ok.

Jennie was the ONLY ONE out of the group who got a solo.

Jennie got a solo while they still had promotions going on. Jennie had group AND solo promotions. While that happened, Soohyun from AKMU (AKMU is a group under YG formed by two siblings, a girl and a boy) was left TO STARVE. Her brother went to the army and for 3 fucking years she was left to nothing. Her brother said she even wrote a whole album and YG said no. Instead Jennie got her solo. Soohyun had to wait over a year after that to get a song to come out, which totals to 3 years she waited for a comeback.

And please, someone riddle me this, I beg of you. WHY did Jennie get the solo. She's not exceptional at dancing, she's not exceptional at singing, she's not exceptional at rapping. I don't even know how she got this famous within the group, Rosé's got the vocals, Lisa has the dance skills, Jisoo has the face, what does Jennie have? Why did she get the solo? Why not Rosé? Jennie keeps hogging brand deals and front row seats at fashion shows and instead of giving Jisoo and Rosé a chance Yg said 'here my little baby, take this chance and make a very basic and underwhelming song that everyone will love regardless for some reason'

And the fact that she didn't have any repercussions (believe me, when YG punishes someone, you can tell. Just look at Hanbin, he got kicked out bc one time he thought of buying drugs :D) after breaking one of YG's biggest rule is appalling to me.

For whoever doesn't know, YG hates happiness and love and he doesn't let artists date. Now I don't know what the contract says, but just so you know, Bobby from ikon said in an interview during Killing Me era (2018) that they weren't even allowed to be in the same room as the female trainees. iKon debuted in 2015. And Jennie, in 2019 (3 years after their debut, just like the 3 years that had passed for ikon at the time of bobby saying that) was caught getting into Kai's car and it later came out that they were dating. Bonkers, I know.

But she still got away with it.

2. The 'injury'

Now I started hating Jennie around the lazy Jennie period.

Basically she was performing with the happiness and energy of a fat girl running the mile in P.E class. If she could look any more uninterested she would be a corpse.

Now later it came out that she twisted her ankle and that's why she was performing that way. However, last time I checked ankle injuries don't affect face muscles or arm movements.

GD had a heat stroke mid concert. He performed with T.O.P, right after that he had a heat stroke and in the 4 minutes T.O.P was performing a solo he got better, because after top he had a solo to perform and fans paid for a show, and G-Dragon delivered a show.

The thing that I really don't understand was the way she performed her solo and the group songs was completely different. And that's what triggered me. Like oh during your solo youre busting your ass but in the group songs I guess it's not worth it.

She could have AT LEAST made a less bored face.

So, so many idols perform with injuries. So, so many idols perform while their mental condition is absolutely fucked. Is it messed up? Yes, yes it is.

And do I know how much it hurts to force your body through pain? Absolutely I do. I'm the only libero in my team, my knee is fucked and my back is begging me to stop but I couldn't stop because my team needed me and even if my back pain wakes me up at night I play as if everything was alright because that's what I'm there for.

And that's what she signed up for. What? Once inconveniences hit suddenly being an idol isnt cool anymore?

Try being Rosé, she busts her ass and she changed her voice to what YG wanted and he still ignores her and gives her no brand deals. You can look up how neglected she is.

Hey guys! Here are some kpop opinions I have...not really sure if these are popular or unpopular but thought I would just drop some of these here. LMK if y’all want me to do more opinions. It’s okay to disagree with me but please be respectful. 1.) Side Effects is one of Stray Kids best title tracks

2.) Simon Says and Superhuman are also one of NCT 127′s title tracks

Bro if you don’t like these songs I....I don’t even know what to say. I guess I could see why people wouldn’t like Simon Say’s a little more than I could see why people dislike Superhuman but honestly I love those songs so damn much. Again, those songs are that bitch and will forever be that bitch

3.) Taeil is one of the funniest members in NCT

Self explanatory, homeboy is so damn funny

4.) Map of the Soul 7 is my favorite BTS album

The songs on there just hit a little different, I don’t care what none of y’all say

5.) Epiphany > Euphoria

Some of y’all have never watched Jin perform this live (like on Youtube....doesn’t have to be in person) and it shows. That song be making me feel some type of way like....his vocals are just....I don’t even know how to explain it

6.) Y’all gotta listen to Stay from Blackpink at 3 am or when you can’t sleep

This isn’t really an opinion I guess but it hits different when you listen to it when the world is asleep. There is something so comforting yet sad when you listen to it that late. It’s a very bittersweet feeling yet it’s so calming. I hope this makes sense.

7.) Likey is Twice’s worst title track

I don’t know why but the hatred I have for that song...I just...next caller

8.) Out of all subunits in NCT, WayV has the best music

Not one bad title track or b-side. I said what I said.

9.) I enjoy Rosé’s vocal’s/vocal color over Jihyo’s

Please don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Jihyo and she’s my bias in twice but something about Rosé’s just be hitting different. Especially in song’s like Stay, Hope Not, and You’ll Never Know. Jihyo’s voice is absolutely beautiful though and I would give up my life for her lmaoo. (I’m not claiming anyone is a better vocalist, this is just my preference! If you enjoy Jihyo’s voice more than that’s great! Both girls are amazing vocalist)

10.) Idol collab > BWL collab

I’ve seen a lot of discussion about which was better, Idol or BWL (referring to collabs) and I personally enjoy Idol more. Nicki’s verse just be hitting different and I’ve always been a fan of her. If you prefer BWL then that’s fine! I just personally like Nicki on Idol more than Halsey on Boy with love.

12.) Blackpink’s line distribution doesn’t need to get fixed

I’ve seen a lot of people saying X member needs to get more lines and I personally feel as though their line distribution (as of right now) makes a lot of sense and is pretty fair. I think if they were to switch it up, that would be great but like I really don’t understand the big deal. I understand it’s a little disheartening that Jisoo and Lisa tend to get the leave amount of lines but Jennie and Rosé have the main positions so it makes a little more sense as to why they usually get more lines. Plus, blinks tend to overplay how bad the distribution is when they have one of the fairest distributions in kpop.

13.) Unstanning a group because of their fandom is a valid reason

Y’all how are you gonna tell someone that their reason for unstanning a group is invalid? Like good for you that you would never unstan a group for that reason but people are different. If the only part of the fandom that you are around is very toxic then it can make stanning a group very hard. Fandoms are a huge part of kpop (why tf do you think we have names??) and it is apart of the experience so yes, you can unstan a group because of the fandom. That doesn’t mean that the person doesn’t still see the talent of the idols. It could just mean that they want to separate themselves a little bit from the group and the fandom. Nothing wrong with that, please get over yourselves.

14.) I think it’s great that we talk about the double standards in kpop but we also fail to talk about issues that male idols experience

Ex: Sexual harassment, sexualization, mental health, yada yada.....I’m not trying to say that girl groups have it easier than boy groups or vise versa but I just think that it’s important to point out the just because they’re a male idol, doesn’t mean they can’t go through some hardships (again, not trying to say that girls have it easy because I KNOW that they don’t...both sexes deserve to be respected and I just think that’s important to note)

15.) I don’t really care for Red Velvet b-sides

I’ve seen a lot of people hype of RV b-sides and I personally don’t really see the hype? I guess I just enjoy their title tracks more and I think that there are groups that have better b-sides (personally preference though)

16.) One of these nights is Red Velvet’s best song and it honestly might be my favorite kpop song

The emotion in the girls voices when they sing just really be making my heart hurt and the meaning/story behind the song just makes it even more meaningful. It’s a work of art and I could listen to it all day everyday

The hate Blackpink gets is driven by internalized misogyny and here’s why

Blackpink. Basically the biggest girl group on the planet and one of the biggest groups in general, dominating the charts worldwide. Blackpink’s comeback, “How You Like That” broke world records for most viewed video in 24 hours and debuted no.2 on the Billboard charts. I’m sure “Lovesick Girls” charted as well or the same. The first kpop group to perform at Coachella, Blackpink have collabed with too many western artists for me to name (actually, I could probably name them but I could care less about some of these western artists so I’m not going to). I mean, not really a surprise, Blackpink has been breaking records since their debut in 2016. There’s not even really a point in introducing them to you since there’s literally no way you don’t know who they are. 

Now like many celebrities, the more famous you become the more hate you get. I hope everyone knows that this is just bound to happen regardless if your favorite celebrity has never done anything problematic and consistently produces bop after bop. However, BP get some of the worst hate I have seen towards a kpop group and most of it coming from kpop fans and blinks themselves. I’ve heard it from my close friends, from randos on stan twitter, and from locals. So, I have a bone to pick with y’all haters because I truly don't understand. 

Let me start with saying that I’m not a blink. I’m kinda far from it. I like bp and I will definitely click on their stuff when it comes out but I am in no way shape or form an actual stan. I wouldn’t buy their stuff or cry over their achievements, though it does make me somewhat proud. But even though I’m not a blink, I find myself defending these girls whenever someone tries to start shit. 

Ok, so from what I could gather from scouring the internet, harassing my friends, and looking through twitter, people hate bp for mainly these reasons: they hate Jennie, they think bp are overrated and overhyped, they “are not serving what they could serve” (yes, I quoted this from my friend), they’re basically models not idols, their fans suck, and BIG 3 privilege. There’s actually a lot more reasons that I found by looking at a “why do you hate blackpink?” quora thread but these are the easiest to tackle. I’m here to tell you that most of this hate if not all of it comes from misogyny. To be more specific, internalized misogyny because most of this hate comes from female kpop fans. 

Disclaimer: I did not research which demographic hates on bp the most but from personal experience, it has always been women who share their distaste for bp. Ok, moving on. 

I’m going to tackle the reasons I laid out one by one, hopefully well enough that you look back and see if the reason why you hate bp is out of just simple dislike for their music or because you hate women. There’s a big difference if you didn’t notice. If you get offended by this piece then that’s on you not me, just saying.  

Ok, first reason. You hate Jennie? Is that so? May I ask why you hate her so much? What exactly has she done to you that you have such a strong hatred for her? Is it because she’s lazy? Because she’s not doing what she’s capable of? I need reasons. I really do need some reasons before I label you off as someone struggling with internalized misogyny. Jokes aside, I don’t see how you can hate someone you’ve never met. I think most of the time we forget that you literally don’t know these people. I don’t know my favorite kpop boys and you definitely don’t know my good sis Jennie. I could make a whole other piece on the fake images and personalities these idols have and how we eat them up but whatever. 

Back to Jennie, you literally don’t know her. This whole Jennie is lazy argument is bs, pure shit if you ask me. You have no way of knowing what’s going on in her life. I’m pretty sure you’ve had bad days, bad weeks, maybe even bad months. You forget her job is draining, mentally and physically. She’s got dances to memorize, songs to memorize, fans to deal with and communicate with. She has a social media presence, she still has to practice and train (idols don’t just stop practicing once they debut). I know my body would not be able to withstand that no matter how long I trained; I’d drop dead immediately. The matter of fact is there are a ton of reasons why she wasn’t performing up to YOUR standards, which is a whole other can of worms since you’re probably on your bed doing nothing. It’s almost like y’all forgot sickness and fatigue is a thing.

And even if the reason wasn’t a medical reason, you can’t let my good sis be lazy for once??? The thing is everyone acts like they’ve never been lazy in their entire life. You’re telling me you’ve never not wanted to do nothing for no good reason? Lies, you’re fucking lying. Ok so what if she doesn’t feel like doing the move with that much energy. Let her live?? All I’m saying is you’d probably survive 5 days in the kpop industry with your lazy ass. And don’t try to hit me with the “but that’s her job she has to perform at 100% all the time” because I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to be failing your classes or pretending to be sick to get out of class. It’s the hypocrisy of it all. All if you had to perform the same song for a year, I’m sure you’d get sick of it too (fuck you YG). 

The reason why you hold Jennie to ridiculous standards is because of your ~ misogyny ~. Yes, it’s showing. Especially if you don’t hold male idols to the same level as Jennie. Female idols on the daily are held to ridiculous standards when it comes to their performances. One hair out of place and all of a sudden the knetz come holding their pitchforks. Gfriend slipping on the stage, something caused by literal rain, is still laughed at to this day and mocked. Jang Gyuri on Produce 48 had a voice crack that was edited and replayed to death on the show, ending in her elimination because she couldn’t recover from it. Meanwhile male idols make a mistake on stage and it’s like “Omg, a babie! Omg, that’s so funny!”. I don’t think I can think of any moment where male idols got shit because of a stage mistake. If anything he’s just babied and posted on twitter. My point is female idols are always shat on no matter what they do. Jennie is no exception.

Now the second point, bp is overrated and overhyped. Umm, so this point is a little harder to flat out say you’re wrong, mostly because it depends on your own personal taste. If bp’s music is not for you then it might be easy to say that they’re overrated since they’re literally the biggest girl group in the world. The nuances come with the reasons behind this statement. I’m not going to address if you just dislike their music, I can’t really change your opinion on that. I will however, address if the reason behind you saying they’re overrated is because their music sounds “generic” and you don’t think they’re talented, or if you don’t think they deserve their fame because of their small discography and short promotion periods. 

The statement that all four of the bp members are untalented is just false. Wrong. W-R-O-N-G. Don’t mind me just spelling it out for you. Listen, to be able to debut you have to have some sort of talent. No one really debuts without any talent at all (for record yes I’m including visual as being a talent, sue me and leave hate idc). The only reason why someone with no talent would debut is if they had a HUGE fan base before debut and the company was trying to capitalize on it. I can name a few examples but I’m not trying to start shit. These fan bases could show up from predebut commercials, acting gigs, or reality shows. Blackpink had none of that, sure a few of them had appearances in other mv’s but I wouldn’t consider that abnormal in companies’ promotion tactics. Bp went through the typical trainee process. They passed the auditions, trained for a couple of years, and debuted. Now if you knew anything about the trainee process you would know that trainees have monthly evaluations. These monthly evaluations determine whether or not you can make it to debut. If you don’t show progress, then you’re getting the boot. So the fact that bp made it up to the final levels of evaluation and actually debuted indicates that these girls have talent, I’m sorry to say. Objectively, these girls can dance, sing, and rap. Maybe they’re not the best in the industry, I never said that but they are capable of doing all 3 things. Also they come from YG and as much as I hate YG, they’ve got trainees for dayssssss. YG’s status and income did not rely on these girls debuting, they could’ve picked anyone out of their 100 trainees they’ve got in the dungeon. If anything it’s way more competitive to debut in any of the Big 3 companies. It’s like picking the best of the best. If you’re saying these girls are not talented then maybe check yourself a little bit to see why you’re exactly saying that. I’m assuming you won’t be able to do anything better than them. 

The other three points were that their music is generic, their discography is small and their promotions are short. Well, in that case say fuck YG? You’re really acting like these girls produce their own music, make their own choreos and schedule their own promotions. Like wtf? That’s what their companies are for? The way that everyone chooses to ignore YG and their staff and immediately put blame on the girls like they get to choose what they do is ridiculous. Now I know not everyone does this, but the amount of people I’ve seen say bp is overrated because of their discography is a lot. But y’all really out here acting like they make their own discography smh. Yell at Teddy? Yell at YG? I’ve been yelling at those mfers because they’re not giving bp what they deserve. There’s no surprise when I say what they’ve been giving bp is subpar in terms of choreo and vocal ability in songs. I know those girls can do so much more. I don’t even wanna talk about the pretty savage choreo. I don’t. But this is no reason to hate on them? It’s like if I hated a starbucks barista for starbucks having a pumpkin spice latte. Like ????

Even the hate that they receive because they get sponsorships and ads makes no sense. You don’t want them to make coin? A huge part of what comes with being famous is brand sponsoring. Brands pay you to promote their stuff because hello, you’re famous. So the fact that you don’t want them to do this is first of all wack but also again you’re acting like these girls choose the sponsorships and choose when to go on these trips. YG. MFING YG. I don’t think y’all understand how much control these companies have over their idols. Company says drink water, you drink water. Company says stop breathing and you stop breathing. You do whatever your company says you have to do. That’s your boss. 

So why don’t y’all start hating the producers, choreographers, and management instead. Why focus your hate on these four girls? I won’t spell it out for you again but I hope you get the jist. Most of the time it’s way more easy to attack the woman when she has nothing to do with anything. Society tells you to direct your complaints to the girl involved. You see a male celebrity start dating and who gets attacked? The girl. A girl gets cheated on in a movie by her boyfriend and who does she attack? The girl he cheated with. It’s internalized misogyny luv, yes I ended up spelling it out for you. For real, the girls just breathe and y’all scream at them. 

Final point about the big 3 privilege and fanbase. You have every right to not stan a group because of their fanbase. What you don’t have a right to do is hate on them and leave nasty comments on their posts. First, that’s fan behavior. Second, if you’re gonna do this keep the same energy for people who want to do this with your group. I’m talking about every group because every idol group got some wack ass fans. You shouldn’t hate a group because their fanbase is annoying, they don’t get to pick and choose their fans. So, don’t be a hypocrite ok :) Now big 3 privilege. Ah big 3 privilege. Yes, it exists. There’s no denying it. Big 3 privilege doesn’t really die out in my opinion. For as long as they’re still active, bp will have big 3 privilege. But just with any other sort of privilege, if you have it might as well use it. Listen, if I was white you know I’d be eating up my white privilege I’m not gonna lie. Jokes aside, bp has worked extremely hard. Yes, they have the big 3 privilege but they still have to perform these concerts, shows, and go to these interviews and train. As much as you’d like to disagree with me, I think that it’s a very objective to say that they have worked hard. 

I think it’s important to acknowledge how hard it is to get into these companies in the first place. You’re not born into it like a lot of social privileges people have. You have to audition. There are so many idols that have tried to get into these big companies but have failed. Now I’m not saying that these idols are not as talented as the ones that get into these big companies. Most of the time, these idols aren’t ready at the time of their audition and work harder on their own before trying out other companies. The big 3 get their trainees at very young age, which means these kids have to be either geniuses or show an incredible amount of promise. They’re the big 3 for a reason, they’ve been around the longest and have the most experience. They can see a future idol in the making relatively quickly. So yeah bp have big 3 privilege but they’ve worked hard, sacrificed their childhood, and get shat on just as much as your kpop idols. They’ve just got a fancy name behind them that doesn’t even make good choices promoting them anyways. It’s not a valid reason to hate them because of this, just saying.

Most of the hate bp gets is brought upon by the idea that our patriarchal society has ingrained in us. Women = bad, yell at them vs. men = good, don’t yell at them. We hate seeing women succeed. It’s as simple as that. Seeing powerful women dominate the industry they’re in scares us to our core. We don’t like it. I’m just here to bring light to it.

1. Old Kpop fans deserve their respect.

They were here before it was ‘cool’ or ‘normal’ for them to like Korean pop. Before it was accepted. Before the ‘Korean wave’ was a thing. They were here before Vlive, world tours and merch. Like we know he had hoes, just like any other famous guy idol. And she was a total social climber who tried to defame him, this was proven by the outrageous things she did after the TOP scandal calmed down. So all the bad things she said about him should be taken with a grain of salt. Personally, weed isn’t a big deal esp since we apparently got rapists out here now👀 but in Korea it is a big deal. Still he reflected and has been quiet for like 2 years now. How long should he punish himself for? He was one of the best rappers out here🤧😩

4. The big three are the big three for a reason.

SM, JYP and YG are some of the oldest companies that have been around with the most distinct style and influence. The amount of revolutionary groups to come from those companies alone is i n s a n e. Being the big three isn’t about money, so ppl saying BigHit outsold so them so they are bigger than the three, is just wrong. The big three have been doing this consistently before some of you hoes were even born and produced amazing groups over and over again. BigHit’s success is new, and they only have one big and successful group at the moment. Give it some time🤷🏻‍♀️

8. Facemasks literally don’t do anything

Not necessarily Kpop but Kbeauty. Ummm....dermatologists even admit that it doesn’t do anything to your skin. It can make ur skin feel nice for a short period, but in the long run you are actually doing more harm than good to your skin......just think about that next time you wanna buy a facemask.

9. Be careful with Kbeauty.....there’s a fine line to walk

If your eyeliner is meant to make your eyes look Asian.....it’s cultural appropriation. If you’re using bb cream or foundation that’s way lighter than your actual skin.......that’s colorism. Also trying to give yourself aeygo bags is kinda fetishizing a feature that many Asians have. Just don’t. Work with what you have instead of tryna became a whole other race. 🤦🏻‍♀️

10. AOMG should become the new YG

YG is so fucking problematic these days, it’s sad really bc they were that one company that was all about hip hop and ‘dark’ concepts. I think they were even called the black label out of the big three 🤔 so they are def taking a hit with all these scandals they got rn. I got to thinking....what other company is all about hip hop and more rap driven whilst having a good management/ceo? AOMG! What is life without fun? Yes it is the personality of the writer of this blog. If all of  you readers want to know the writer deeper then just keep on scrolling and reading.

Let me take you on my journey growing as normal teenager that has a dream on his life. Being a simple kid wayback when we are living at Pindangan 2nd Camiling Tarlac the writer studied at Pindangan 2nd Elementary School which is a public school in addition,  mostly of  Filipino children attend public schools, which are funded by the government and free to attend. The quality of education at public schools remains poor. Classes are big, teaching material is lacking and teachers are poorly paid. But even though the writer studied at that school there is no way to bring him down because learning are so very important, the lessons that the writer gaining on every single day is the key to have a successful life, because knowledge is the only thing that some people cannot snatch, those lessons that the students taking it every day. Even if sometimes he played with his playmates he did not forget to study because his father and mother wants him to give focus on his studies some activities that the writer is doing when the writer is studying for examples, writing some sentences, solving basic math problems,  spelling, and lastly reading books given by the school where the writer studied elementary. When the writer is playing some “larong pambata” with his playmates they are wearing their own sincere smiles wayback there is no gadgets just not like these days all peoples has a mobile phones with them every day. Bacause people now a days are addicted in using phones, laptop, computers, tablet, and other gadgets.

Then the writer graduated junior high school at Asian Lexcon School in that school the writer build up his attitude in that school  just like having a great time for socializing to other students of the school to  have more than friends over his comfort friends, building up going in front of the class, and also the other memories that the school gave to the writer the. All of the struggles on being a students starts here in this chapter of my high school life all of the stress in projects, seat works, exams, and other school connected that every students are doing. In this chapter the writer realizes that having a many friends can maks your personality grown because your friends are on your side giving advice and keep giving friendly love.

The writer loves KPOP (korean pop) watching,hearing, and other kpop related things that every fan inlove for. First group is BLACKINK or BLΛƆKPIИK is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of four members whice are Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group debuted on August 8, 2016, with their single album Square One, which spawned "Whistle", their first number-one song in South Korea, as well as "Boombayah", their first number-one hit on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, which set the record as the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean act. With the group's early commercial success, they were hailed as the New Artist of the Year at the 31st  Golden Disc Awards and the 26th Seoul Music Awards. Among the other member of these group my bias is Rosé because of her angelic voice, her very own distinct style on how she deliver the dance, and also her stage presence. Those are the reasons why the writer love BLACKPINK when the writer hear the song of these girl group it makes the mind of the writer more fun and boosted until now they are running the whole KPOP industry as number one all of the other group.

Next is GOT7 is a South Korean boy band formed by JYP Entertainment. The group is composed of seven members which are JB,Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom. GOT7 debuted in January 2014 with the release of their first episode Got It?, which peaked at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and number one on Billboard's World Albums Chart. The group gained attention for their stage performances, which include elements of martial arts tricking. Among the other group member of these group my bias is Mark because of his fullness of visual his aura when he is on the stage his stage presence is very amazing his rap line is so satisfying to hear and his bass toned voice.

And the last member to on my top three kpop list is TWICE is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2015 reality show Sixteen. The group is composed of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. The group debuted on October 20, 2015, with the extended play episode which is The Story Begins. Twice rose to fame in 2016 with their single "Cheer Up": the song charted at number 1 on the Gaon Digital Chart and became the best-performing single of the year. It also won "Song of the Year" at two major music awards shows—Melon Music Awardsand Mnet Asian Music Awards. Their subsequent single "TT", from their third EP Twicecoaster: Lane 1, claimed the top spot for four consecutive weeks. The writer have a condition on his eyes. Yes it is the very common eye condition that the writer have. Having a farsightedness eye condition (hyperopia) is a common vision condition in which you can see distant objects clearly, but objects nearby may be blurry however, the writer wearing an eyeglasses to protect his  eyes to the dangerous sunrays of the sun which is the presence of ultraviolet rays (UV rays) having a blurry eyes causes by the hard time using a mobile phone which is estimated about the start of  morning until the night ends or it might also cause due to the genes of the family example if your mother has this kind of eye condition it has a possible that you may get also this kind of eye condition that everyone do not want to have because it have many factor that it might change your lifestyle just like the writer. For example if the student that have the same condition to the writer that is sitting at the back of the classroom then the teacher is writing a lecture then you cannot see it because of the student have a condition similarly to the writer that is blurry sights then you cannot come up easily that is the struggles when you have this kind of condition especially if you are a student.

The writer also doing art works for example, sketching faces, gowns, and sometimes sceneries that caught the writer eyes, he is also doing some paintings, designing houses and other building structures. The writer personal dream is to become a famous fashion designer ever since he was a kid (grade four) that is what the writer like doing the estimated sketches of gowns, dresses, shoes, and other fashionable items are about more than fifty pieces full of sketches.

Having fun in our life is just a piece of pie, the ingredients of the pie are simple yet powerful because those ingredients can make a delicious pie similarly, to the person  life some scenario in our life is simple yet it can make people smile because people are enjoying simple crystalline chapter of their life because “life is too short” so just enjoy the life given by our God and do not forget to keep smiling every day that is a piece of advice that that writer can give you whenever you all read this.

Ok I am gonna be super straight forward about this, making hairstyles like this is really challenging for me. I have tried a ton of times and I just can’t get the meshes to work out the way I like. UV mapping is a pain in the ass, making the hairline match well, and making sure none of the mesh strands are broken is next to impossible for me. Most creators that make hairstyles like this do them from scratch or spend a long time working on them for them to look right. I’m not saying ‘no’ because I am going to try to play around with some seasons meshes (I have hair ideas) but no promises :(

Hello! I use an adfly skipper + adblock, and if both of those don’t work then I just don’t download the cc. For some creators (nolan-sims, simduction, isjao, ivo-sims, and others) I will turn them off because I know these creators aren’t ones that use the sketchy adfly stuff, but for others that I don’t know well I leave it on. I use: U Block origin and adfly skipper (both on firefox)

Hello!! I don’t think this is my eyes because I’m not experiencing this glitch? Did you run a S4S batch fix over everything? I think that causes this glitch sometimes but I am unsure. Try repairing your game and if you have the “no EA eyelash” mod then redownload that and replace the old file.

(Jennie’s POV)

“Once again, folks, the group with the most medals at this years ISAC gets the chance to do a collab with one of the following idols.” My heartbeat quickens as I wait for their name to appear on the big screen. Besides the fans, they are my only reason for actually trying to get gold medals in each event we’re placed in.

“G Dragon.” The male rapper, whose smile paralyzes many, shows up on the screen. Some of his hit songs, such as Fantastic Baby, Crooked, Good Boy, and WHO YOU? play.

“Shinhwa.” Of course the longest running kpop boy band would be featured at an event as big as this. The music videos for Venus, This Love, and Crazy flash across the screen. The screams from the crowd only get louder and louder as each soloist or group is announced. Psy, IU, and Wonder Girls are the last three idols to be declared before THEY show up.

“And the final idol the winner of ISAC can collab with is…. (Y/N)!” There they are.

(Y/N), the quickest kpop idol to ever become famous, besides Yeeun from Wonder Girls. They were able to debut right after they auditioned, making them the youngest kpop idol to ever debut at lightning speed. After their debut, they instantly won awards such as Best New Artist and Best Music Video with their debut hit (insert random song name here). The first time I ever saw them, I fell in love with them. The way that they sang, danced, and smiled, I couldn’t help falling for them.

“Jennie, what’s the matter?” Rose asks me.

“Yeah, why is your face so red?” Lisa comes up from behind me and pokes me on the cheek. Gosh, this is so embarrassing. I’ve never felt this way before I saw (Y/N).

“Hey, who do we want to collab with if we win the prize?”

“Who said we’re going to win, Jisoo?” Lisa asks with a teasing smile.

“I kind of want to collab with G Dragon.” Rose says.

“I saw that one coming.” Lisa rolls her eyes. “How about Psy? He seems cool and he’s got the dance moves to back that up!”

“Hey, what about (Y/N)?” I finally manage to say. In a flash, they all turn towards me with bright smiles.

“That’s a great idea!” Jisoo gushes. “I’ve always wanted to work with them. Ever since I first heard their song (song title).”

“Alright, let’s win and earn ourselves that collab with (Y/N)!” Lisa strikes a victory pose. My smile widens and my heart rate speeds up. To think that my dream of singing with (Y/N) could come true within a matter of hours makes me feel all funny inside. I wonder what song we would sing together if we do win. Maybe some kind of love song? (Y/N) is a songwriter as well, so maybe they can write a song for only us to sing? Just imagine it; the infamous (Y/N) writing a song for me and only ME.

I take a deep breath and let it all out before giving my girls a determined look. “Okay, here’s our game plan…”

“BlackPink is currently in the lead with a gold in the 60 meter sprint, a silver in the archery competition, and a silver in rhythmic gymnastics. Following up, we have Seventeen with three silvers, and Gfriend with a silver and a bronze medal.” I hear over the announcements. Next up is the 400 meter relay. I stand at the ready, double checking to see if the girls are in place. Our order for the relay is Jisoo, Rose, Lisa, and then me. We need at least one more gold in order to assure ourselves that we will get first place and not Seventeen. “Okay, ladies, let’s get ready for the 400 meter relay!” The crowd cheers. I see a few girls from the other groups stretching, their faces look like they’re made of pure steel. I, on the other hand, am not so nonchalant. My nerves feel like they’re going crazy.

“Hey, Jennie, calm down. We got this! We’ll do great!” Lisa gives me a light pat on the back.

“Thanks, Lisa.” I force a smile on my face. “Now go get ready, and make sure you run with everything you’ve got.”

“Yes, ma’am!” She jogs over to her spot and waits patiently.

“On you marks, get set, go!” I hear over the intercom. My breathing picks up. Jisoo makes her way around the course, handing off the baton to Rose. She’s in third place right now. Rose’s able to pick up the pace, landing us in second place when she hands the baton off to Lisa. Here comes our trump card. Lisa starts off slow, but she eventually speeds up, passing by Yuju from Gfriend as she does. When she reaches me, she hands me the baton while yelling “go, Jennie, go!” I start off fast and sprint all the way to the finish.

“And in first place we have.. BlackPink!” The announcer calls as I make my way across the finish line. The crowd erupts into a fit of cheers, and the girls surround me while screaming out of pure excitement.

“We did it! We did it!” Lisa screams while jumping up and down.

“Collab with (Y/N) here we come!” Jisoo says with the biggest grin. Dammit… my heart’s going haywire again. Oh gosh, what am I going to do when I meet them?

(Reader’s POV)

I sit in the audience in a disguise as I watch the events of ISAC unfold. Wow, BlackPink are really going at it with the awards. I look around the field, checking to see what each and every group is doing. A certain black-haired girl, however, catches my attention. Jennie from BlackPink. I can feel a blush slowly making its way to make cheeks. This girl… I swear. The first time I saw her onstage at MAMAs was the moment I fell in love with her.

“And the winner of this year’s ISAC is…” I hear a drum roll go off somewhere in the distance. Man, what a competition! It’s my first year going to an ISAC competition, and I do have to say that it’s way better in real life than on screen. “BLACKPINK!” I look up in an instant, and start to cheer and clap for the four girls. “BlackPink, who would you like to do a collab with?” I sit and wait in anticipation. I hope they say my name. I would really like it if I could do a collab with them, specifically Jennie.

Jennie takes the mic and gives the crowd a sly smile. Before she announces who they want to collab with, however, one of my guards comes up behind me, taps me on the shoulder, and motions for me to come with him. I nod at him, looking behind me one last time before following after him.

(Jennie’s POV)

I look up into the crowd, wondering where (Y/N) could be. “BlackPink, who would you like to do a collab with?” The announcer asks the four of us. I step up and take the mic from him, making the crowd cheer as I do. Flashing everyone a smile, I open my mouth to tell everyone the idol’s name.

“The person we would like to collab with is…” To add a bit of dramatic effect, I pause and watch as some people writhe in their seats, impatiently waiting for the answer. A few people scream out “tell me” while others sit there with a scornful look. “(Y/N)!” The crowd erupts into a fit of cheers.

“I’m glad you chose me.” I hear a voice say over the intercom. “Jisoo, Lisa, Rose and… Jennie.” I look in the direction that the voice is coming from, finding myself come face-to-face with an angel.

“(Y/N)…” Their name slips from my mouth. I see a faint blush spread across their cheeks as they smile in my direction. God, I swear I was just blessed by the sight of a goddess.

“I’m happy you guys chose me, and I can’t wait until we collab together!” The girls all turn to me with a look of expectation, but I’m too busy gawking at (Y/N) to notice. I remain like that for a few more seconds until Lisa nudges me with her shoulder. I turn to look at her, and she nods her head towards (Y/N). Understanding what she means, I fumble around with the microphone.

“Oh! Uh… Same here! We were sort of hoping that we could write the song together?” The girls look at me with a raise eyebrow.

“We? I’m sorry, but are we missing something?” Jisoo asks in a teasing manner. I feel a blush creeping onto my cheeks.

“W-well… you see…” Everyone breaks out into a harmony of “aww”s. I look up at (Y/N) and see them bite their lip due to how flustered they are. They’re so cute!

“Y-yeah! And while we’re at it, how about we do a duet together?” (Y/N) makes their way towards me. I can feel my heart pounding out of my chest as my smile widens. All of my dreams are suddenly coming true, and in a few seconds, I can feel myself falling more and more for this angelic being in front of me.

“I’d like that.”

WC: 3,445 Summary: Jennie was your best friend since elementary school. Now both graduated, you went your separate ways: her going to debut as an idol and you going to college. She came home for the summer to catch up with you, but for only one reason: to tell you she loved you all this time she’s known you. Authors Note: Somewhere along in the story, you will come across the word, brunet, and before you correct me on the term, I just wanted to inform you is that I am describing a male character. Brunette is the female version, and brunet is the male equivalent.

It was noon, and the bell indicated it was time for lunch. Everyone in my History class let out a sigh of relief.

“Don’t forget, your final projects are this Friday! Not a day late or marks will be deducted from your over all grade!” Mr. Smutz called out to his class of 20 as they all filed out, rushing to get some food.

“Man, I love History and I respect that man, but oh my god his voice is so boring!” I said, turning to my friend Lexie.

“I know right!?” she began to imitate him, “‘And that class is why the economic boom of the 1950′s happened.’ Honestly, y/n. I fell asleep in his class three times, in the past two weeks! I kept having to ask Marcus for the notes we took down in the lecture.” She whined, and I couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Luckily I submitted my project in last week."

"Oh, of course, you did!"

I chuckled at her remark before I continued, linking my arm in hers. "C’mon, let's go get some food. I’m starving!” And we made our way down to the cafeteria.

I ordered my usual Caesar salad with a glass of lemonade, and Lexie opted for the vegetable wrap. We made our way to our usual table and waited for our third and final friend, Megan, who studies computer science in a separate building to ours. Megan came and sat beside Lexie on the other side of the table. She placed her tray down and looked in the direction behind me.

“Hey, Meg!” I chirped.

“Hey Meggiemoo,” joked Lexie. Lexie calls her that because when they were in the 1st grade, they dressed up as the two halves of a cow for their school play. We went to different schools growing up and we met in college.

Going to a new college was nerve-wracking, just like going to a new school was. But I remember that they were part of the welcoming committee and they graciously accepted me into their group, and since then I am forever grateful.

“Yeah, hey guys.” I furrowed my brows because obviously her attention was locked somewhere else.

“Meg,” I began, “What’s wrong?” She pointed to behind me, and I had to turn around. 

My eyes met a crowd of people who seemed to surround something. Or rather, someone. From the gaps, I could tell that this girl was tall, and had long, light brown hair with a few blonde streaks going through. Was she famous? I stood up to get some sort of a better view because I surely couldn’t see anything from sitting down.

“Who is that?” I wondered a loud.

“I’ve no idea, but she must be famous.” Replied Lexie.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought, too,” I said, sitting back down.

Soon enough we began talking about Megan’s hot new substitute teacher for her computers class. Mrs. Darwin has been out for about a month now because she slipped and fell down the stairs and broke her hip. 

“What’s he like!?” Lexie demanded, ushering her to continue to talk about him.

“Well,” Megan responded, “He’s very tall. A brunet. Hmm, he has green eyes and these super long lashes,” she finished, smirking at me. I chuckled because this is Lexie's ideal type in a man, but unfortunately, that description is false. I met her teacher last Thursday when I was waiting up for her to finish talking with her professor.

“Oh my God, Megan, seriously?! Do you know tha-” but Megan cut her off, aware of what she was about to say.

“-That he’s your ideal type?” Lexie bit her lip nodding fast at Megan.

“Please let me tell her, Meg!” I tried to conceal my laughter.

Lexie, looked taken aback, furrowing her brows she responded with, “ Tell me what?” But just then her gaze drifted to above me.

“Excuse me,” I heard a voice say behind me. It was vaguely familiar, but I still couldn’t recognize it.

“Have any of you lovely ladies seen, or know a girl by the name of y/f/n y/l/n by any chance? I’ve been looking for her all day and I know she goes to this college but I can’t seem to find her.” My head shot up when I heard my name.

“Jennie?” I muttered, my friends kept darting their direction from me to the girl behind me and vice versa. I stood up and turned around. In front of me, was the tall, radiant woman with long light brown hair with the blonde streaks going through them. 

“Y/n?...” She quizzed, furrowing her brows at me, unsure if I’m the person she’s looking for.

“Yes? I’m the owner of that name.” I chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. And all at once it hits me. It’s Jennie Kim. The same Jennie Kim from elementary school. Obviously, more grown up and mature and God, has she gotten beautiful.

“Y/n!” She repeated my name again, but this time more certain and with that, she took me in her arms and embraced me tightly. I, of course, did the same, squeezing her little frame tightly too. In my ear, she repeatedly whispered, ‘I missed you, I love you,’ and I couldn’t help but smile. When she let go of me, she looked me up and down and everywhere.

“Look at you!” She’d comment, “you have gotten more beautiful since the last time I saw you. But of course you were always beautiful to me,” and she’d smile softly at me.

“I was just about to say the same thing to you,” I concurred.

Behind me, I heard one of the girls cough loudly, to try and get our attention. I smiled, turning around and facing them, Jennie went to my side.

I turned to Jennie, “Jennie, this is Megan and Lexie.” I informed, gesturing to which girl owned which name. 

Jennie nodded and introduced herself to them once more. We sat down beside each other. For the whole of lunch, Megan and Lexie would ask so many questions about KPop, what it’s like to live in South Korea, and sometimes I would join in with questions to that got me curious.

“So, we’re about to get very personal, if that’s okay,” Megan cautioned. Jennie just chuckled and gestured her to continue.

“Any love interests?” Lexie added in special effects sounds and I couldn’t help but cringe. 

I looked over and her and put and a hand on her arm and reassured her that she doesn’t have to answer it, and I heard the others protesting in disapproval. Jennie brushed me off and told me that it's okay.

“It’s not like I’m in love with that person, but it’s only a little crush,” she began. “I’m crushing on somebody in the industry.” The girls pushed her to continue, to get some of the juicy gossips.

“Ahh~ okay okay. I am crushing on Sooyeong from a group named Girl’s Generation,” she confessed. Lexie quickly scrambled to her phone to look up pictures of this girl. I already knew who she was, as I occasionally listened to their songs. 

“Yo, she’s pretty!” Megan piped up, Lexie agreeing with her. 

I just stayed silent. For some odd reason, Jennie’s confession and the comments that the girls were making, sort of got to me and I couldn’t find an explanation why. Seeing my discomfort, Jennie leaned close to me and asked me if I was okay. I quickly nodded, telling her I was fine. For the remainder of lunch, we talked about our college lives and what we do and what we major in. Luckily, I only had a History lecture in the morning, so I was able to go home.

When the bell once again signaled that lunch was over, I said my goodbyes to my friends and took Jennie by the arm as we headed to my car.

“Where are we going?” she wondered.

“Home. I don’t have any more lectures for the day.” I unlocked my car and threw my bag in the backseat.

“Seatbelts,” I reminded her and she did what she was told. On the drive home, this time she was asking me questions about my life and what I’ve been doing all these years while she was away training.

“Not much really,” I shrugged my shoulders keeping my attention on the road as I made a left turn. “I graduated high school with a 3.4 GPA. I got accepted into a good college, and here I am.” I concluded, turning to catch a glimpse of her before locking my eyes on the road.

“Come on, y/n. That can’t be it!” she pleaded. “There HAS to be something good and bad that happened in between!”

“Well, my parents are still happily married. My brother moved to the States to attend an Ivy League college because he wants to study law. And my younger sister just finished elementary school and will be going to high school?” My reply was more of an uncertain question rather than a certain statement.

“That’s what I’m talking about! How are Shane and Lily? And your parents? Mark and June?” My chest went warm because it made me happy she still remembers their names.

“Shane is content, he’s doing really well. As I just told you, he’s attending Harvard Law School, which is amazing. Lily is great, she’s getting along great with the girls and school and she takes after my brother's grades. She’s amazing and extremely smart and I love the young woman she’s becoming. My parents are still happily married, and both are happy as always.” I concluded. 

Once again I stole a quick glance from her, and she was looking at me and she was an avid listener, holding onto my every word. I looked back to the road and the sight of her made me smile. I took a right turn into a housing estate and slowed down my pace. About three minutes later I pulled up into the car park beside my apartment complex.

"Well," I unbuckled my seatbelt and grabbing my bag from the back seat, "this is my apartment," I concluded, looking up to the building. We got out and we proceeded to make our way to my place. I greeted my neighbor Tom, who lived on the third floor of the building.

"How many more stairs are there!?" whined Jennie, who was lagging behind me.

"Fifth floor, apartment 7C," I answered. We stepped inside, and luckily I had done a little spring cleaning two days ago, so my apartment wasn't such an embarrassment. She made her way to sit down on the sofa, and I joined her. I offered her some water or a snack, but she kindly declined.

"Now, " she began as I settled myself on the sofa placing a pillow on my lap. "What has happened to you when we graduated, hm? Friends love life. Are you still friends with that girl, Abigail was her name?"

"Jenna," I corrected. "And no. She moved to the UK to study Medicine and we got into an argument and her final wish was to never lay eyes on me or hear my voice ever again." I exhaled heavily. "Megan and Lexie," I continued, "are my current best friends and I adore them to bits," I said with a smile. She nodded taking all the information in.

"Love interests? Past relationships?"

"I dated this guy in Freshman year," I confided but shook my head. "We didn't last long because I found him at this party making out with the host, a girl named Margaret and since then they've been dating. So, nothing new from them. No dates no texting no nothing." I smiled at her, which leads into a chuckle.

"What about you, and your crush on Sooyoung?" I smirked, remembering what she had said at lunch. She pouted, shaking her hand and finger.

“That was a cover up so they could stop liking questions.”

“Well,” I begged her to go on, “is there really someone you like? And who is it!?”

She chuckled before responding, “Someone, and I won’t tell you who,” she smiled.

I groaned, “Fine! Don’t tell me,” I replied. I got up and went to the kitchen to get us drinks. I was filling up the first cup when I heard my phone chime. “Hey, could you check what and who it is please, should be in my bag.”

I heard her get up and head to my phone. “Well,” I said, “Who was it?” pouring the second cup. 

“Y/N, I need to go,” she responded quickly. I whipped around, seeing her grab her bag and coat. 

“Why, what’s wrong? What happened? At least let me drive you to wherever you’re going!” I exclaimed

“No, it’s okay. I’ll get a taxi.” And with that, the door shut. I went over to my phone and check the notification, but nothing was on there. 

The last few days leading up until my party that would be scheduled for Friday, I scheduled the days what I needed to get. On Thursday I purchased a variety of alcohol and other non-alcoholic drinks, and on Friday morning, I made a quick trip to the super market to buy even more snacks. When I returned, I cleaned all the rooms. In the kitchen, I laid out the snacks in various bowls. I stuck a sticky note on the fridge that told people that that’s where the drinks were being stored. I texted Jennie early in the morning that she was invited and wrote the address. When I checked my phone the few times I was disappointed to see no new messages from her.

Once I finished with the food and the drinks and preparing the place, I went to prepare myself. I quickly showered, blow dried my hair and got dressed. I applied some makeup. I headed to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of coke, and sat on the bar stool. As the hours slowly ticked by, more and more people began filing in. Even when the party was in full swing, I still couldn’t see Jennie, and I kept my eyes on the front door like a hawk.

“Hey, Y/N,” a girl came up to me and I immediately recognized her.

“Oh hey, Tiffany!” I beamed, she’s the girl from my History class. I do all my assignments or projects with her.

“I came by to see if you got my text the other day.” She stared at me with big eyes, anticipating an answer.

“Well Tiff, I’ve gotten plenty of messages from the other day but I haven’t gotten any from you.” I smiled at her, “What’s up anyway?”

“Oh, um... Well, that’s okay. I’ll just tell you in person. So, Y/N-” Tiffany was cut off my Jennie, who greeted me and introduced herself to Tiffany. She shyly introduced herself too.

“Y/N, can I talk with you, in private?” Jennie requested.

“But I was in the middle of a conversation with Tiffany when you came by.” I turned to Tiffany, “Please do go on, you had something to say?” I reminded her.

“Oh! Right. What I wanted to say was I like you, Y/N. A lot. I find you very cute and attractive.”

“Yeah, I know she’s cute. But she’s mine.Touch her and I’ll kill you.” Jennie said, glaring at Tiffany.  I was jerked by the arm by Jennie who led me to the other side of the room.

“Where’s your bedroom?” she quizzed, looking around.

“What the hell are you doing, Jennie!?” I demanded to know, furious. “You can’t just take people away while they’re speaking to someone, that’s so rude!”

“Yeah, yeah,” she didn’t seem to care what was rude and what wasn’t. “Where’s your room. I responded by pointing to the door at the end of the hall, glaring at her. Once inside, I began asking questions, while she locked the door.

“Wait, why are you locking the door?” I furrowed my brows. She stayed at her post by the door.

“Sit.” She told me and I obeyed.

She signed, she seemed unable to form sentences because whenever she looked up at me, her mouth agape she’d shut it again, squeezing her eyes shut trying to find even more words.

“I like you. A lot. More than a lot. A lot a lot.” She finally said. I blinked a few times, it was my turn to try and find the right words.

“What?” Was all I managed to say.

“I think I’m in love with you and that scares me half to death.” I continued to stare at her, unaware of what to say. She continued, further explaining herself.

I tried going on dates, and I even dated somebody for a while, but I kept thinking about you and all my feelings would return.  “There was never really anyone else.” She shrugged, looking defeated. I still stayed mute.

“Please say something! It’s killing me seeing you so quiet.” 

“But, Jennie, I have nothing to say about this. This is all news to me and I have no idea how to react or what to say.” I finally said. She sighed, defeated, unlocking the door and heading out. I felt so stupid for not saying anything, that I ran out after her, but to no avail. She was nowhere to be found.

“Hey, Tiff. I apologize about earlier, but this is important have you seen Jennie, the girl that took me away earlier?”

“Oh, yeah. She left about a few minutes ago.” She replied coldly. “She seemed very upset. I nodded and thanked her and left my apartment on the look for her. 

When I left my apartment building, I found her sitting on the curb. I sat down beside her.

“Jennie? Let’s work this out okay?” I said, rubbing her back to reassure her.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

“What did you say?” She said it a bit louder. “Jennie, there’s absolutely nothing you should be sorry for.”

“But I just confessed to you!” she protested.

“But that’s okay! I’m not upset, or angry, or offended. I’m just surprised because I never knew you could like me back.” I said smiling. She lifted her head up and looked up at me, furrowing her brows at me.

“Like you back?” I nodded. “Does that mean?...” I nodded again. “You like me back!?” I nodded one my time. She left out a howl into the cold night, throwing her fists up into the air in victory, I chuckled at her response.

“Come on,” I said standing up giving her my hand. “Let’s go back inside, the party is awaiting us!” She nodded and graciously took my hand as I lead her back inside.

Call out post

for people who believe boy groups are superior to girl groups because they take an active part in producing and writing their own music. (Spoiler alert: You’re SO very wrong).

Will this post be long? Yes. (Seriously, it’s super long.) But it’s very necessary considering the amount of people who seem to think that girl groups take no part in the creative process. It’s just wildly inaccurate to act as if girl groups do not play an active role in creating their own music. Girl groups from every generation, including the current generation, have many songwriting and composition credits to their name. To ignore their efforts and downplay these creative achievements is terribly ignorant and insensitive. The automatic assumption that female idols do not assist in the song production process reeks of the inherent sexism that pervades the kpop industry. This post is meant to criticize this way of thinking and challenge people to enlighten themselves on the hard work of girl groups before putting them down for no reason. Read below to start the wild ride of enlightenment. 

Something that needs to be addressed before I get into songwriting/composition credits is a luxury that boy group fans get to enjoy; the benefit of their idols being male. Their favorite groups will never have to face the excessive limits put on girl groups simply because of their gender. I’m mentioning this to hammer home the fact that girl groups already have so very little control over their image (think CLC having to beg for a non-cute concept) that it might be harder for them to participate in track production than a boy group who may be granted more creative liberty simply because the male-favored landscape of kpop is going to be receptive to pretty much anything they put out; meanwhile, girl groups have to follow a certain expectation put on them by the public and netizens, which could limit chances for creative freedom or encouragement. There is also the issue of companies not giving a chance to idols who want to write, though I don’t think that issue is exclusive to female idols only; however, it is worth noting. 

That being said, a very large number of female idols are able to play a role in creating their music. In fact, most groups (girl and boy) have at least one member or more that authors or co-authors tracks and/or composes them as well. So this idea that any one particular group is superior to others because the members “write and produce” their own music is ridiculous, because a really good number of groups do. (I put “write and produce” in quotations because in reality it’s almost always co-writing and co-composing credits; there’s nothing wrong with that. But it’s important to note that these songs are the result of a huge team effort outside of the group’s members - usually, no one member is entirely responsible for the final sound of a song. That would be something more commonly found with solo singers and their work; less common with groups just due to the extra complications and considerations that come with writing for multiple people instead of one).

Lastly, before we get to the credits, I’d like to propose that we get away from the idea that idols who don’t have a hand in music production are somehow less talented or important than those who do. Not everyone is meant to be songwriter or producer. Some people just like to sing, dance, perform, etc. It is certainly not a requirement to take on a role in music production and no one should be looked down upon if they don’t. For instance, none of the members of BLACKPINK wrote or composed Playing with Fire. Is it still a great song? Yes. Did BLACKPINK do a great job performing it? Of course. We need to stop thinking of songwriting as a requirement for someone to be a considered a good singer/performer. It’s damaging to those who may not be good at writing or who choose not to write due to being emotionally guarded, like SNSD’s Taeyeon, or whatever other reason they may have.

Now onto the numbers. I will be mentioning only a handful of key groups from three different eras, just to avoid making an already long post longer. I will also not be touching on songwriting credits from first generation girl groups, solely because I haven’t researched their songwriting credits enough yet to include them in this post. Let’s get started. (Note: All information is taken from the KOMCA - Korean Music Copyright Association and the masterlist of songwriter/composer kpop artists thread on onehallyu)

I’m going to start off with some prominent girl groups that debuted between 2006-2011.

WONDER GIRLS are a great place to begin because I’ll never tire of talking about their magnum opus Reboot, in which every single track was written, co-written and co-composed by AT LEAST one member. And last year’s hit Why So Lonely? was co-composed and co-written by Lim, Sunmi and Yubin.

In addition to their work as a group, the members write their own solo material too, including Yenny’s work as HA:TFELT, Yubin’s raps, and Sunmi’s singles, including a writing credit for Gashina.

I fall for Kpop ?

LOL so funny that I started to humming and dancing when Blackpink’s Whistle and As If It’s Your Last and Ddu Du Du and oh now Stay and oh Solo by Jennie Blackpink. Okay sorry, and the Playing With Fire 🔥.

Honestly, I cannot accept Kpop since like it started to explode years ago. I just cannot.

And now look, How i can accept kpop like literally accept it and fangirling the groups.

So far the groups that I am so into are, Blackpink, Twice, 2ne1 (yes I know this is long time ago since they are hit by I Don’t Care and Lonely), Wonder Girls (yeah you know, who never listen tu I want nobody nobody but you?) and SNSD (the Gee song remember?) also a song I currently loving it is, Lion Heart.

Boybands?

Yes I am so into BigBang. The Nose,Lips and Ears (?) forgive me if i am wrong the title but you know what I mean right? lol. Last Dance is my favourite.

Songs?,

From drama OSTs exactly. I love Kdrama. So much. Since I watched Goblin, I started to listen to the songs but dont really care about the singers. Oh before Goblin, I watched Heart String. The songs are so good and Yong Hwa is still forever favourite of all time 🌈

Also, Shila Amza did that. She made me listen to Kpop. She did covers of kpop songs and I am a fan you know, i listen and love them eventually.

Ok. Thats my story about how I started to accept kpop in my life.

2018: A Year in Kpop

I think it is safe to say that 2018 is a another big year for Kpop - a (infamous?) moniker for Korean Pop. The so-called Hallyu wave stormed the American and much of the western hemisphere like tsunami. While what started out to be reaction videos and fervent fans promoting their Kpop stans in radio and twitter (another Kpop ruled media), now the western media is paying a lot more attention, albeit to minority of the acts such BTS, short for Bangtansonyeondan (lit: bulletproof boyscouts). Paving the way, BTS opens the door for more recently acts like Monsta X, NCT, BlackPink, and others who score presence in the States as well.

While all well wishes and congratulations go to Kpop artists and acts who made 2018 another good year, the aim of this post is to highlight some of the best Kpop pieces that left marks in the year 2018, in my personal opinion (although these largely land similar sentiment across general public). So, no offence to others.

In general, 2018 is sprinkled with scores of unexpected rise of Kpop acts who did not show such tendency in previous years. Their new and fresh music takes South Korea and much of the world in surprise. Some popular acts continue to remain popular but fail to produce (in my opinion) good musics as would have been expected given they previous years' records. Perhaps, with the exception of BTS. This year is also peppered with good news with the return of some veteran acts from serving the mandatory 2 years military service while simultaneously others going hiatus with the similar reasons.

To begin, 2018 is a big year for iKon. They took South Korea by storm this year with their almost strip-bared piano backing and minimalist Love Scenario. The song in fact was so famous that it was banned in schools because the kids are addicted to this easily 'chewable' tune. Written by the leader B.I. (Hanbin), Love Scenario entails the story of the break up. This masterpiece was then followed by Killing Me and Goodbye Road, both of which were too accepted well among the public. The former being the sadness of breakup told in the equivalence of killing oneself and finally the latter tells the end of the series of breakup and going on separate ways.

Pentagon, a still relatively young act scores well with similar vibe song, an equally catchy and minimalist song called Shine. This song is very well accepted overseas with scores of covers made by overseas fans. Their following song, Naughty boy employs the same instrumental means like Shine. It seems that this year, the stripped-to-the-bare minimum instrumental and rhythmic song is a trend. Sadly, for them, one of the member left the group due to dating controversy that also resulted in their famous senior being kicked out as well.

2018 is not a complete if one does not mention BTS. They are huge this year. The scores of accolades from Billboard to AMA, UN to Grammy, it seems BTS is continuing their advancement from previous year and probably will too in the next year. This year their album Love Yourself: Tear, the second instalment to the Love Yourself Series landed at top spot in Billboard 200. The main title track, Fake Love, an emotional rock/hip-hop becomes their summer anthem. The repackaged album, Love Yourself: Answer scored the best album sold in the century in the South Korea, with the main title song Idol, a literal self-love anthem. Their Korean rendition of this song, performed in MMA2018 is definitely one of the best BTS performances to date. To me, while these titles are good and catchy, the B-sides pull some heartstrings. The Truth Untold has a soft spot in my heart, with the vocalist belting desperate and heartbreaking story in a sad but poetic way. I'm Fine, a response to their previous song, Save Me is another good track to listen.

All awhile we have discussed the boy groups, girl groups did equally well this year. At the start of the year Red Velvet's Bad Boy, Momoland's Bboom Bboom and Twice's What is Love were doing well. Similar to Love Scenario, Bboom Bboom's rise to popularity was unexpected. This rather young group scored a big hit this year among the established act like Twice and Red Velvet. In fact, you could say, I am rather disappointed with Twice this year. Perhaps, to better put it, I expected a lot more from Twice. After receiving much love for CheerUp, TT, Likey, and Heartshaker in the previous years, What is Love and Yes or Yes did not quite rise to the challenge. While Dance the Night Away exudes a rather different vibe (and I applaud for this undertaking), I think it doesn't suit Twice so well. Maybe because, we (or I) associate them with more cutesy and Twice-ish anthem like CheerUp or TT.

Blackpink did extremely well this year. After being starved for a year with only one song, As if it's Your Last, Blackpink came back with a mini album, Square Up, and a summer title track Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du. Of course, the hungry fans celebrated this and the song indeed did very well both local and internationally. Perhaps, a big contender for song of the year after Love Scenario. One of the members, Jennie went solo with Solo (ahem!) and the song is bop and suits the ear of many due to the generally mainstream track. Other act like Mamamoo soared this year with notable tracks such as Paint Me, Starry Night, Egoistic and Wind Flower. Starry Night and Egoistic are very much loved, with the latter infuses a Latin-inspired sound. Meanwhile, GFriend returned to their stronghold sound with Time for the Moon Light. EXID on the other hand welcomes their leader and main vocalist, Solji with new track I Love You, yet another EXID bop like Up&Down.

While in general YG acts tend to do well, I am rather disappointed with Winner. They did so well last year with Really Really but Everyday is just not comparable. They can't seem to repeat their success even with the recently released fan song, Millions. Despite this, their rapper Mino comeback's is an equally bop song as Jennie's. Mino's Fiancé has some interesting sounds, perhaps a remake of an old traditional tune. Speaking of traditional tunes, this solo work has a similar vibe to BTS' rappers' track called Ddaeng, which borrows from traditional Chinese sounds.

The rest of the acts performed more or less as expected. In the boy groups, Got7 came back with a funky house pop tracks like Look and Lullaby. Seventeen has a good year in 2018, releasing Thanks and Oh My! Seventeen also did well in their OST with A-Teen, a song loved as much by South Korean as the web drama of the same name. VIXX came back with a Scentist, a song that is a good follow up from Shang-ri La (one of my favourites in 2017). Monsta X is delivering good songs after 2017's Dramarama with Jealousy and Shoot Me, although in my honest opinion, Dramarama is still superior. However, their good tracks land them a spot in America this year. Got7 also has it big in the States. It seems like following BTS path, many Kpop acts are quite welcomed within the western hemisphere this year. EXO came back later in the year with Tempo and Love Shot. But it is safe to say, much of 2018 is quite empty of EXO's presence (except for EXO-CBX). Among the two title tracks, Love Shot just sounds better, while Tempo fails to deliver the expectation from their long comeback since Universe.

2018 sees many groups either going hiatus or their members going solo. Big acts like BigBang, Highlight and SHINee are some of the examples. BigBang released Goodbye Road, a fan song, before the members served their nation, with the exception of Seungri, who goes solo for the time being. Another group going hiatus with impending military conscription is Highlight. The successful re-debut of 10-year-old group last year gave their fans their last song, Loved, before their members going to serve the military. Their members have released solo songs from late 2017 to 2018. Doojoon, and soon Yoseob, are serving the nation currently. SHINee's leader Onew also followed suits, with him releasing his solo Blue beforehand. Other member such as Key also released his solo. It seems like a trend that, before going for military, members go solo and perform in front of their fans for the last time. The same is true for BtoB and Infinite as well. BtoB continues to belt their perfect vocals with Only One for Me and Beautiful Pain. Sadly, one of their members, leader Seo Eunkwang left the group to serve the military, soon to be followed by two other members: Minhyuk and Changsub, who also have released their solo tracks. Infinite also saw their leader leaving for military and came back with Tell Me prior. The group so far remains in hiatus, with Woohyun going solo and Hoya leaving the group.

While we have to say goodbye to some good vocals, SM artists welcome the comeback of TVXQ! from military. But for many, TVXQ! glory days are maybe over since the scandal that left the group broken into the duo TVXQ! and JYJ. Cassiopeia awaits for the OT5 comeback and the return of their glory past. The duo songs did not do as well this year but before we throw the towel, let's wait for their 15th anniversary album. Super Junior also welcomes their members who finished their military service. This year, Super Junior goes Latin with Lo Siento and Otra Vez. They are tapping on their huge fanbase the Latin America. The Latin inspired musics are staying for awhile in Kpop scene. Girls' Generation came back in a unit with summer track, Lil Touch while BoA came back with Woman. Woman anthem continues strong past 2018.

2018 sees several solo female acts rising to the top. Chungha, Heize and Sunmi are big this year. Rollercoaster is doing well for Chungha, propelling her further after the disbandment of I.O.I. Perhaps, she is one of the few members that is doing very well. Heize continues to remains popular in urban/R&B scene with Jenga. Sunmi exudes sexiness with Heroine and Siren, a continuation of woman anthem since her Gashina. IU, on the other hand, returned with Bbi Bbi, an unexpected sound from her successful 2017 tracks Pallete and Through the Night. Personally, it is not my favourite IU songs. It is not that I don't like the song, they take time to get used to, but still I applaud IU for taking up the challenge for this female anthem. Women are indeed doing good and breaking free this year. Lastly, to add on, Red Velvet's Wendy sang for The Beauty Inside OST, Goodbye, which lands onto my personal favourite tracklist.

Male solo artists did not quite match up to their counterpart. Roy Kim released a soft ballad Only Then and Eric Nam a EDM and reggaeton Honestly. Dean is big earlier in the year with instagram, one of my personal favourites. J-Hope and RM of BTS both released their mixtapes. Airplane and tokyo are my personal favourites among others. Meanwhile, VIXX's Ken's remake of Late Regret does the charm in pulling my heartstrings. Shaun's Way Back Home is very much loved in South Korean and my personal favourite indie track, despite the sasaeji accusations.

In the band scene, CNBlue is currently on hiatus with Jonghwa in military and other members soon to follow. FT Island released summer song, Summer Night's Dream and also expects for impending military service. That leaves us with Day6 who came back with Shoot Me, but largely did no do as well. Meanwhile, The Rose retuned with emotional-rock Baby and She's in the Rain. The former personally is better than the latter.

Produce 101 acts like Wanna One is seeing their impending disbandment end of this year. The super-rookie has enjoyed deluge of love from the fans local and international. They released many songs this year alone with unit tracks as well. Boomerang, Light and Spring Breeze are some of the titles. The last one, Spring Breeze, showcases the sad ballad musics to culminate their journey with fans. Meanwhile, the new Produce 101 child, Iz*One is debuting their 12 members group with La Vie en Rose, another Latin-inspired song. Produce 101 acts are favourites among many, with Wanna soon to be missed.

Rookie group to watch this year is (G)I-dle, they have impressive year with Latata and Han. The former won them their first music show award, indeed a powerhouse rookie (a reminiscent of Blackpink in 2016). Han,on the other hand, is my personal favourite. Stray Kids is competing with The Boyz for the male rookie this year, with the former, in my opinion has a better public reception. Hellevator and District 9 are some of their debut songs this year.  

Lastly, on the not-so-rookie group. KARD came back with You in Me and Ride on the Wind, with one of the boys became a vocalist. The former generally better than the latter, continuation of the KARD vibe. Ride on the Wind, however, fails to fly as high as their debut songs. KARD was my favourite rookie last year but this year they just didn't deliver. Meanwhile, NCT has a big year in 2018. Following BTS footsteps, they are a growing presence in the States. NCT U released Boss and NCT 127 Regular and Simon Says. While the last track drew some controversy, NCT 127's continuing popularity is on a steady rise (only shadowed by EXO). Regular, on the other hand, another Latin-trap track is just good to your ears. The English version surprisingly sounds much better.
