A look back on my old art (and other doodles on Twitter.) - December 2020

This marks the FIRST post of many I will make detailing my old work. I'm gonna start posting these weekly as to make it easy others AND for me. And what better way to start it off by the month I finally got a tablet. (and turnt 18 too I guess)

I was not a smart 18 year old, I some how barely survived the last 2 years of high school, and this and the next would become the worse it ever got. Yet I still persisted and somehow stay sane. Kinda. Keep that in mind for the bulk of 2021's art in the following weeks.

Ah here we go, I finally got a drawing tablet. I got REALLY excited with the pen pressure that I kinda gone overboard with it, but it was nice to use one. (granted I forgot how to draw with a mouse now.) Oh yeah, if you notice a black line on the VERY top of some drawings, that was a bug with firealpaca. I kinda had to live with it for a while.

At the time, I used to draw myself with sideburn thingies cause I thought it look cute, but I no longer do that. Also you might be noticing a large about drawing made in a short timeframe. Well I have an explanation for that. You see, I sometimes get hit by these bursts of productivity and I can draw super fast. Sometimes these bursts happen at random, but in this case it was because I gotten a new tablet and new ideas where flowing.

I HAVE LOT TO SAY ABOUT THIS. I was super obsessed with TGWeaver's FNAF comics. It was why I gotten back into FNAF around 2019. But I was fascinated with Toy Bonnie at the time, to the point I started drawing her on the daily. I started using her as an avatar for myself online. It was when I saw a post on tumblr where something made a kinsona when it clicked for me. This rabbit holds sooooo much gender. 🏳️‍⚧️ Thus ended 5 years of denial over my gender.

being gay was fully legalized in the United States in 2002, long before homestuck came out

I thought it was in 2015 that gay marriage was legalized in United States. Maybe in 2002, it was legalized in some states, but it wasn't ALL of them until Obama made it official. That's why people praised Steven Universe, a show that aired in the years 2013-2019. They were airing in a time when the fight for it and success had come. They had pushed LGBT themes in the show or at least, try to hide it but then became vocal as time went on. Yes Homestuck fans were accepting of LGBT, but you also forget the same fandom also lived in a time edgey humor was a thing that not even people of LGBT minded. They can casually use the word faggot to describe someone being an idiot, not as a slur to actual gay people. Do I need to bring up Karkat again?

True real puritanism is mostly based from religion such as Christianity. Like how people thought entertainment was a sin that they had to destroy all music and paintings in order for everyone to focus on God. It can be like this even today. I should know, my family is Jehovah Witnesses. My aunt has never ever ever seen a Disney movie, read any other fiction book, watched a show, or listened to other various music genres. But if we were to be fair, we might as well call this whole movement then MODERN puritanism. Instead of religion, it's more based on things like trying to appear as morally good person. Part of it is trying to over-correct or erase the past mistakes. It all for the sake of boosting one's ego or greed while trying to paint themselves as the righteous person.

Before I get to start new fun projects to kick everyone's asses, I gotta finish the stuff already out there, so let's remind ourselves what those are:

(gonna make a readmore cut thing because this got too long, as rambles often do)

Systemless, the very silly very gay epic that's wrapping up finally after 3 years, I'm aiming to finish in April. Honestly this book is super up the Tumblr alley and even has BL romance but I forgot to promote it on here lol. I'll do that when the ebook versions come out

Golemancer, which really bombed compared to my original expecations, but it's still a pretty well-liked story honestly. I am going to wrap up Book 2 since it's already almost done, then publish ebook versions, and if those do well I'll finish the series later on. I should have done this over a year ago...

Japan Romance, the codename for a long-gestating project I've been working on since 2019. It was a novel, then a comic, now it's a visual novel, and yes I'm intentionally adding these comma splices why do you ask? When this project comes out someday you are gonna flip out, I promise. It's gonna be my ultimate early career project.

Project U, a collab with Ktalaki, the actual mspa prophet and not me actually. This project will never see the light of day, on purpose.

Game Jam. Quinlan Circle is gonna do a week-long game jam during Golden Week. Unless the game is literally unplayable, we will post that online afterwards.

Project Z, this is a codename that's actually just the impending release of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, a game that I suspect will take up an entire month of my life. Still working on creative projects even while this game is out is going to be my life's ultimate challenge. When Fire Emblem Engage came out I totally failed at doing anything but playing that game (and also dealing with various life crises throughout February but that's a story for another time AKA an actual blog essay not this thing)

MSPA Reread 2023, a project that's semi-creative because it's unlocking entire spheres of my brain I forgot even existed. The sheer nostalgia that came with reading Homestuck Act 5-2 took up multiple days of my life reminiscing about old projects and long-dead forum thread. I'm on Act 6 Intermission 3 now as of today, and I think my friend group will finish around the end of April. Later, I'm gonna read the Epilogues and Homestuck 2 for the first time and see why people hate them so much lol. I know they're not "strictly canon" but I'm a long-time Star Wars EU fan, so fluid canonicty in layers is totally normal to me. Maybe not to other people...

(also I guess Psycholonials counts here? And the visual novel games? IDK about those quite yet)

Anyway there's one thing that I'm building to, and that's a project codenamed Really Big Story. You might be able to guess the story concept based on the codename. Quinlan Circle has been going for almost 5 years now, and we're getting ready to work on something super ambitious. But we can only work on it after we're all in better spots creatively. For me this means finishing (or quitting) all the stuff I've built up over the years. I have too many projects!!!!!

Okay this is just my opinion as someone who witnessed the 2019 discourse and as someone who is also on hermittwt: but there are some groups in hermittwt who are eerily similar to how M/les and his group acted in the back in the day. Like with their self righteous black and white mentality and large following. I’m absolutely terrified that what happened in 2019 is gonna happen again and that anyone who isn’t 100% against shipping will be harassed off the site

It's already started happening - I've collected a few "Twitter refugees" already, and I've heard that many of the early, chiller members of Hermittwt have left because of some of the more toxic individuals already. My feelings on the matter are ping-ponging between not wanting the Hermits to get roped into/exposed to all of that conflict and negativity and not wanting more people to be traumatized but also (to quote Homestuck) "I think I mostly want to see what happens when this whole place breaks apart". I want to see it all burn. (Do I recognize in the long term this would not be good? Yes. Do I want to see it also? Yes. Do I want people to be hurt? No. Do i want to see it die? Yes. Etc etc etc.)

I'm not surprised that Twitter is following the footsteps of Tumblr; some of the anti-hermitshipper crowd migrated to be primarily Tumblr Twitter users post-2019 because they felt uncomfortable with the way the Tumblr community's collective opinion was starting to shift toward ship neutrality, and theres also that old saying that twitter discourse is always a few years behind tumblr discourse LOL

the hole june egbert is new to me , but i don't know why people think john is trans? i just thought he was a good example of non toxic masculinity. but i still love your drawings

John’s narrative in the epilogues - specially candy- feels very trans-like. He’s reached a point in his 20s where he is depressed, shut in, expectant and feels like he’s under-performing and the whole world is either fake or not working ‘RIGHT’, he acts under the assumption that all of his discomfort with how his adult life is going (growing up, marrying up, having kids, growing a mustache, seeing everyone get into their het+baby nuclear families) is due to a problem with the world ITSELF, and not something within him that’s gone wrong.

1) it is definitely to do with his depression.

2) depression caused by unrecognized dysphoria feels exactly like this. (”dysphoria” is a word that is thrown around so much and in such violent-heavy contexts that people completely forget or are not aware how much more subtle and insidious the feeling of not being quite right on your body and assuming you’re the one doing ‘you’ wrong can be)

Going from that, John’s narrative in homestuck proper CAN be read in a completely new light. June Egbert comes from how that narrative resonates with trans people who discovered they are trans WAY LATER in life (roxy showed one example of that, this is another context altogether) and how interesting egbert’s inability to allow himself to introspect in the context of gender/sexuality (mildly freaking out about roxy/dave’s coming outs, laughing nervously and brushing it off) is a symptom of something bigger. Little suburban boy raised in a cishet white picket fence environment suddenly feeling like something’s gone wrong on his development and he really hates the idea and concept of being a ‘he’ at all- and then come the girls.

During HS, john is largely directed by/instructed by/projected on by women who are perceived to be either more capable, wise or cunning than him. (jade, rose, vriska, terezi) a LARGE part of his story is john allowing himself to go along with their larger than life personalities even when they’re doing goofy or weird things- because it seems like the right thing to do. And Then There’s The Thing About The Daughters

“June” itself comes from a pesterlog where john is talking with vriska and jokes about reading his own name as a very long spelling of ‘june’ - the first rose/kanaya pesterlog chronologically is actually john pretending to be rose and speaking on her quirk - John has an habit of making his NPC’s daughters like they’re dolls in a playhouse scenario where he only allows himself to play with in the concept because he’s hiding under the guise of playing the father (like nic cage) But he always tends towards the feminine.

was this intended coding? definitely not.

is it still effectively coding to a potential trans woman narrative, to the point a lot about john’s repressed rage, refusal to introspect, and repression of his own feelings in favour of attending to the plot and his friend’s/life’s expectations first and before himself all become interconnected and with a greater meaning? YES.

and besides, it’s also really fun. i think it says a lot that the author of the character found the reading to be interesting and got excited about it himself. it’s 2019! turns out john ‘i’m not a homosexual’ egbert was maybe just a lesbian trans girl all along. (this is all stuff im going off of my reread, there’s definitely way more articulate thoughts/pesterlog screencaps from people who have been compiling june meta posts on twitter!)

So it’s been a while. There are a lot of reasons for our silence, and honestly it’s a whole tangle of stuff that maybe one day we’ll get into. But right now the good news is we’re in a stage of development where we can start sharing some things and are committed to talking with you more frequently.

ACT 2

We know you’re eager to find out something, anything, so let’s cut to the chase - yes, Act 2 is in active development. While we don’t want to start throwing out release dates until we’re a little further along, we’re happy to say that the script, art and design work is nearly complete, and programming is underway.

You might gather from the above description that Hiveswap development is a little unusual. Let’s just say we learned a lot of lessons during development of Act 1. For Act 2 we have built a staggered development process where the script and design come first, followed by the art. Then our programming team will put it all together while the writing, design and art teams move on to Act 3. Once we have all the Act 2 content and programming together, we will move into a play-testing and iteration phase before release.

This approach is working much better for us but one downside of this approach is that there isn’t much gameplay footage to show for most of the development. We can’t show you any gameplay yet but we would like to share a few snippets…

We will have more to share on Act 2 soon and we want to share it with you first. For our next update we’d like to invite you to submit questions about Act 2 via this google form and we will aim to answer as many of them as possible in the update.

LUDONARRACON

You may also have seen that we will be attending LudoNarraCon this weekend, a digital convention for narrative games that is taking place on Steam from May 10-13. We will be “exhibiting” at the event and streaming on the Hiveswap Steam store page.

We do want to let you know in advance that we will not be sharing any further info on Act 2 during the stream beyond what we have posted above. Any new info on Act 2 will be delivered here first, when it’s ready.

That said, we would be thrilled if you can join un for LudoNarraCon. The Hiveswap development team will be playing Act 1, chatting about the story, Homestuck as an inspiration, and channeling their inner 90′s teenager! The Friendsim team will also be taking part in the stream and we will be making a demo of Act 1 available for the duration of the convention.

The indie game label Fellow Traveller is running the convention, and we’re really excited to be taking part alongside so many great developers like Inkle and Weather Factory.

Hi! Hope you're doing well! I'm not sure how many cons you've been to or how lone you've been going but have you noticed any shifts in con culture? I remember reading a old post talking about how like in the early 10s a lot of the times in cons you would see people from the same fandom just chilling. In some you would see some artists chilling in the hallway, all drawing and talking ideas, after con hours at night. It always sounded so magical to me, before the pandemic was it still like this?

Hello! I am hanging in there! (: 

I have been attending cons since 2009. I can say there has been a slight shift in the culture that I have been introduced to (lord knows conventions weren’t always Like That). But, yes. 

I feel like we were still doing that in the late 10s but lord knows I’m a lone wolf and I like to wander around by myself (DO NOT DO THIS). 

But while it was similar, as in we still see people of the same fandoms chilling, it was a little different. Back then cons weren’t BURSTING AT THE SEAMS like they are now. You had breathing room. I remember my first two years at Naka-kon, it was in a much smaller venue. Now, we can barely fit in the biggest convention center in the city.

 It was my first or second Naka (I want to say second) and I skipped out on the rave dance party and was just chilling in the main lobby of the hotel. It was quiet and I enjoyed just walking when I was restless and I felt safe enough to do so inside. I was cosplaying Zexion from Kingdom Hearts. I had passed by a group of other Organization XIII cosplayers, trying to get to a public bathroom so I could redo my makeup and fix my wig. They hailed me over and I just promptly planted myself there and we were instant friends because we had something we loved. I impressed them as I redid my makeup with no mirror. Other years I would be just drawing in a corner because my roommates were asleep and I couldn’t. People would plop down because I’m being quiet and draw as well and we would eventually talk. And then never see each other again.

I feel there was a shift when Homestuck became big. And then continuing with every ‘flavor of the year’ cosplay. Grouping up was seen as cringey by everyone (young and old). That mindset was starting to chill but I’ve seen a rise in cringe culture by the gen younger than me. Cut that shit out. I was excited to be out of that mindset and it seems to have come back tenfold. 

Nowdays it does seem less chill. Too many people. More panels running on into the night, not just 18+ ones that made the kiddos choose LOUD DANCE PARTY or bed. Everyone’s restless. No one has a nearby hotel, so they’re camping out. Most everyone has access to the internet and the wonderful tutorials put out by other cosplayers to start doing their cosplays to the nines almost immediately (at least that’s how I feel. I don’t see a lot of “bad/obviously a beginner” cosplays anymore, but I’m also not looking for them).  Everyone NEEDS to add you on instagram if you so much as take a selfie with them. A lot of us are wearing makeup that makes it harder to tell who is an adult or not which makes me not want to socialize (I don’t want to hang out with kids sorry y’all).

And to me it seems a little less fun. But maybe I’m just getting old. The last convention I attended was a known party con (that I did not party at lol) in November of 2019, and so those nice moments had no place once 5pm hit. 

But I can promise you cons were magical back then and they’re still magical now. You just have to know your comfort level with crowds and know where to find a place for quiet if you need it. Because you’ll find people who like that as well. And folks still group up by fandoms. We’re nerds that see ‘shared interest!’ pop up in our vision and get excited. I often opt out of joining, because again. Kids. And Homestuck has kinda ruined grouping up for me (a story for another time). 

I’m hoping we’ll be able to do conventions again when it’s safe to do so. Until then, dream of the fun you’re going to have. Work on your craft skills. Or just... Relax. We’re in troubling times and no one will fault you if you don’t work on any cosplay at all and you’re just getting by.

ok since we got age up discourse in the community i might as well just put all my cards on the table and address my more... “sus” f/os in this regard before i get a callout post by someone who’s unable to do basic fucking research

and yes i do fuck around with the ages of my s/is and f/os to make them closer together sometimes because for the most part huge age gaps don’t generally appeal to me, but all my f/os are 18 or older at some point during their canon so i personally think it’s ok? if you don’t then feel free to unfollow, no skin off my back, but just don’t be a dick about it... like if the concept of an already adult character being aged up, or an adult selfshipper imagining themself as a younger adult to date another young adult bothers you then i really don’t know what to say to you lmao

yoko is 14 at the start of gurren lagann, yes. but around episode 15 there’s a 7 year timeskip in the show and she’s 21 afterward. i only ship myself with the 21 year old version. plus, when i first watched the show i was like 15 and i think that’s a pretty okay age to be attracted to a 14 year old at...

yang is 17 at the start of rwby, yes. but if you go to the wiki, you’ll see that the age 17 is only given for volumes 1 through 3, and an approximate age of 18 is given for volumes 4 and 5, and 19 for 6 and 7. i’m not actually sure if the passage of time checks out there but considering it’s my personal hc that she should have already been 18 by v3 (because it makes sense with regards to how a school year works). regardless it’s clear as day that she’s 18 or older at the current point the canon is at, and it’s not my fault that it took her 6 years to age 2 years. i started following the show during volume 2 for the record, when i was 17 as well.

assorted homestuck characters, more specifically rose and aradia i will admit are a bit of a grey area, but in the homestuck credits (which are a part of homestuck canon as far as i’m concerned, whereas the epilogues and hs2 are more dubious) 4 years pass and john is shown to be 20 years old at the end, so it can be safely assumed that rose is already 20 by that point. and aradia literally appears as an adult in pesterquest (being the only adult version of a featured character in that game as far as i’m aware) so like. there. there’s official homestuck media where she’s an adult leave me alone. (also ive been reading that comic since i was like 14 so. yeah)

the fire emblem fates gen 2 units don’t actually have official ages, but it can be assumed that they’re adults since the player in the game is able to marry them and produce their own child unit, so they have to be old enough to do that. this has literally been the justification i’ve used for this ever since i started shipping with forrest, who was literally my second f/o on this blog (back in february 2019 i believe) and if you’ve followed me since then and you’re ok with that then you really have no business taking issue with it now lmao.
