Band Rants #2 - Far Caspian
Sorry for the delay for the 0.63 people who care, the last week has been not great, and I've been barely holding on. As I write this, it is 2:53 am on a Saturday, and I'm drinking tap water out of a Nicholas Cage mug in the dark.
Anyways, back to music.
There were several bands in somewhat similar styles I almost wrote about instead. Slaughter Beach, Dog and their transformation from Midwest Emo to Indie Rock to Folk (The reverse Wilco, as I like to call it) or Peach Pit, who did something similar with an odd yet fun discography. In a more pop vein, I also considered Rotel Otis, who I started listening to when they were on the Fresh Finds playlist, and whose ability to pump out fun single after fun single confuses me to this day.
But instead I settled on Far Caspian, a band that is a bit harder to pin down. So what is Far Caspian, and why should you care about them?
First, Far Caspian is an Indie Rock/Pop Project led by Irish multi instrumentalist Joel Johnston, who has released 3 Eps, and a full length Album. Their first Ep, Between Days, cane out in 2018. The Heights followed in 2019, and their first full length Album, Ways To Get Out, dropped in 2021.
I am not mincing words when I say Far Caspian is some of the most relaxing, aesthetically pleasing music I've ever heard. Listening Between Days feels like lying on top of a ridge and staring out, relaxed. It's music that makes everything feel fine, even when it's not.
Of course, I will admit some bias in this. Far Caspian has been comfort music for me for years now. I used to sit in the library of my school during lunch, surrounded by ornate carved bookshelves and wearing a beat to shit pair of headphones, rushing through my 5th period AP Euro homework as Far Caspian played, keeping me from panicking even more. The example of me laying on a ridgeline isn't just metaphor either. I've done it before (I highly recommend it, it's very relaxing)
While the 2018 EP is mostly acoustic, 2019's The Heights branches out a bit. Some synth and piano show up, adding some variety to the instrumentals. Each song on The Heights also feels just that little bit more unique. Of course, I'm biased in this matter. The slightly faster guitar and simple drum line if Conversations lives rent free in my head.
(I can effortlessly sing along to it by the way, it's my second most played song of all time)
Yes, I'm aware this is a bit cursed.
Either way, the Heights contains some of the best sounding guitar lines I've ever heard. It's just unfathomably relaxing to me. Of course, the lyrics and drums are also pretty good. When talking lyrics, I would be stupid to not mention A Dream Of You. (You should listen)(please?)
This song is Far Caspian's most popular, and it earns it. The lyrics live rent free in my head, expressing longing for someone else's presence beautifully. The slow, calm guitars and passive drumline even have a little beat drop in the instrumental breakdown towards the end. It is probably one of my favorite beat drops ever. Even with its slow pace, the song has this way of sucking you in. I enjoy it quite a lot. The melody holds a special place in my heart.
In 2021, Far Caspian released their first full length Album, and it was quite a pivot. It's atmospheric and plodding. The music is still gorgeously composed, but there's a very prevalent sadness throughout. If you've listened to the previous songs I'd recommended listening to and enjoyed them, I can't guarantee you'll enjoy the album as well.
Of course, the album has its high points. For me, the most standout tracks were right at the start and end. House is by far one of the most complex songs Far Caspian has ever made. It starts out with a simpke guitar riff, and builds, until its soothing saxophone, combined with its other myriad instruments make the songs climax just transcendent for me.
Of course, they have one more Ep which came out a few days before I wrote all this. Its similar to the 2021 release in a lot of ways. That being said, the closer on the 4 song ep, Arbitrary Task, just sucks me into a trance. It's noisy, strumming guitars, combined with an omnipresent drum line, whittles at the senses a bit, until the comparative quiet of the bridge snaps you back to reality.
Of course, like every band, they also have a large catalouge of singles.
I'd recommend the alternate version of Conversations (Shocking, I know) and Holding On, which is thier first ever song.
Overall, Far Caspian is a band that can be both gentle, and calming, as well as rough andmelancholic. Whatever sound they have though, they are always heartfelt. They remind me of Turnover and Real Estate in a lot of ways. To quote someone else's review of Real Estate, "This is a band fotlr those who can chill to the max"
Between Days (2018) - 8.4/10
The Heights (2019) - 9.3/10
Ways to Get Out (2021) - 6.5/10
Pet Architect (2023) - 5.5/10

Yes I am writing a fanfic now specifically for these songs by Slaughter Beach, Dog because thinking about Buck and Bucky with the lyrics is killing me
Centered around Gale's perspective inspired by Strange Weather
But then Summer Windows is so heartbreakingly Bucky
And Float Away is how they both feel
Every song is about Buck n Bucky to me now :/
Snow Globes - Black Country, New Road / King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 - Neutral Milk Hotel / Bread Song - Black Country, New Road / The Place where He Inserted the Blade - Black Country, New Road / Lover, You Should've Come Over - Jeff Buckley / Concorde - Black Country, New Road / anything - Adrianne Lenker
#their relationship is so beautifully painful and tender to me#mota#masters of the air#clegan#buckbucky

i remember you said u listen to the menzingers once,,,what are some other bands u like??
if any of these bands sounds interesting and you want recs, lmk!!
mal blum- one day I’ll shut up about mal blum. that’s not today. mal blum is a jewish nonbinary songwriter who’s music is just incredibly good. seriously i’m one step away from running a mal blum stan blog i have to get as many ppl as possible to listen to them. (oh they also tour with WTNV which rocks)
hop along- another band with a nonbinary lead singer (shoot me). their music switches between fun riffs and drumbeats and devastating lyrics every 2 seconds and the lead’s voice is gorgeous *makes you listen to hop along*
rainbow kitten surprise- honestly do not know how to describe these guys they’re an alt-rock group with some very fun instrumentation and incredibly unique sounding songs!! the lead singer is gay also 😳
ajj- *sighs drearily* okay before you heckle me. i know ajj is just the same 4 guitar chords with ‘haha edgy’ lyrics but man do they get to me. especially in songs that deviate from that it uhm. it uhm,
apes of the state- i just started listening to them them but i really like what i’ve heard- im a sucker for shitty basement punk songs
arcade fire- yes i know arcade fire is very well known yes arcade fire songs make me, personally, feel violent. go listen to the suburbs.
slaughter beach, dog- folk rock band that i had to include because during febuaury i would listen to ‘your cat’ 4+ times a day
san fermin- gorgeous indie tracks with classical/big band influences. they mean a lot to me :]
the crane wives- female fronted folk band with song absolute bangers and also some absolute heartbreaking songs. they’re good.
lady lamb- also female fronted folk but in a very different way! has some of the most profound lyrics of anyone on this list. makes me crazy.
car seat headrest- here it is i knew we’d end up here. i cannot, reasonably, justify this. but csh really fucking gets to me alright.
squalloscope- they have a really weird sound but trust me. it’s good. they also wrote a song for WTNV idk why that’s a reoccurring theme here
radical face- okay i bet everyone knows ‘always gold’ because annoying fandom people won’t shut up. but seriously Ben Cooper writes fucking phenomenal music. he’s got 4 albums entitled ‘the family tree’ that follow multiple generations of these families with otherworldly magic and how their stories all interconnect and it kind of drives me mad. he’s also gay 😳
front bottoms- it’s the front bottoms. what did you expect

THE BEST MOVIE MOMENTS OF 2018:
HONORABLE MENTION:
The Opening/Closing Credits from BUDDIES
I’m putting this as honorable mention because this is an older movie recently rereleased.
The first film about the AIDS Crisis, Buddies strikes at the heart with its opening credits with a typed list of AIDS victim up to 1985. Set to a mournful score by Jeffrey Olmstead, the never ending list of lives cut short puts you in tears.
Alex Honnold faces Boulder Problem in FREE SOLO
Most thrillers can only wish they could be as gripping as in the moment when Alex Honnold maneuver’s his way through the most challenging section of El Capitan Wall without rope in this Documentary.
Ray Offers Wisdom from Mid90s
“If you looked in anybody else’s closet, you wouldn’t trade your shit for their shit.”
Ray (Na-kel Smith) and his friends may not be the best role models for the impressionable Stevie (Sunny Suljic), but in this moment, Ray teaches him a lesson in perspective.
Glenn Close’s performance in THE WIFE
I’m not referring to any moment. Just Glenn Close’s acting. She speaks more volumes with her face than most actresses could with dialogue.
10) The Beach Scene from ROMA
Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) is an extraordinary woman. Sure, her life hanging towels and cleaning dog poo doesn’t seem like anything special. But like many lower working-class people, she endures. Boy does she endure a lot of shit in this movie. Not only does her deadbeat boyfriend ditch her to practice martial arts, but her baby is born dead. Despite all this, she not only continues her work, but she shares a close bond with the family. She showcases this bond and her strength when a fun day at the beach goes horribly wrong.
When Paco (Carlos Peralta) and Sofi (Daniela Demesa) swim too far out, Cleo walks into the ocean to save them despite not knowing how to swim. We watch in dread as she faces severe waves to find the kids, the camera always close to her.
This scene also contains a beautiful scene of the family hugging Cleo when she tears up over losing her baby. Seeing them all huddled together in front of a bright white sun captures the heart.
9) “A Place Called Slaughter Race” from RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET
Admit it, it’s fun to take pot shots at Disney Tropes. Hell, even Disney gets in on the fun. And boy do they seize on every moment to mock Princess tropes when Vanellope Von Shweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman) encounters the Disney Princesses. Of course, it helps that Director Rich Moore and Head of Story Jim Reardon creates some of the best episodes of the Simpsons. Though there are many hilarious moments[1], none can hold the candle to Vanellope’s “I Want” song.
As she reflects over a puddle, Vanellope sings about her longing to be in the gritty game “Slaughter Race.” Seeing this little girl perform this lighthearted musical number over a background of riots and dumpster fires is comedy gold. Nearly every element of this number elevates the comedy, from singing shark (with cats and dogs in its mouth) to the creative lyrics (“Am I a baby pigeon spreading wings to soar?/ Is that a metaphor?/Hey, there’s a dollar store”). And the number still finds time to emphasize Vanellope’s fear of hurting Ralph (John. C Reilly).
Kudos to Alan Menken for mocking the trope he (and the late Howard Ashman) introduced to Disney. Just as deserving of Kudos is Silverman, who faced to task of singing in Vanellope’s high pitched voice.
8) Charlie Loses Her Head from HEREDITARY
With her unusual hobbies, connection to her late grandmother and that clicking sound, you’d assume Annie’s (Toni Collette) daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) would be the centre of the whole film.[2] Boy, were we in for a surprise.
Spoilers!
When Charlie suffers a peanut allergy reaction, Peter (Alex Wolfe) races her home. On his drive, he sees a mysterious figure in the middle of the dark road. In his attempt to dodge it, he doesn’t see Charlie hanging out the window. Seeing her head slam right into a pole leaves us as traumatized as Peter is. To see them kill off a main character so early in the film is downright shocking. With this death, predictability goes right out the window and we are left uncertain of what direction this film will go.
7) Neil Armstrong Soars in the X-15 Rocket Plane in FIRST MAN
It’s funny how the most exciting scene in this film isn’t the moon landing. Don’t get me wrong, the scene’s still breathtaking in its realism, but it’s surprising how thrilling the opening scene.
Damien Chazelle hits the ground running with Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) soaring the atmosphere in an X-15 Rocket Plane. He soars higher and higher into the skies until he flies out of earth’s surface and gets stuck in space
Albeit, you know he will be back on earth in time for the moon landing. And yet, I found myself on the edge of my seat, wondering how he’s going to get back to earth. Most of it is thanks to the visual effects, which contains some of the most believable since 2001: A Space Odyssey. The effects leave CGI in the dust with practical effects that look so real, you’d think Gosling was actually flying into space.
6) The Ferris Wheel Scene from LOVE, SIMON
High School Movies are home to many unforgettable romantic scenes. There’s Samantha (Molly Ringwald) and Jake (Michael Schoeffling) standing over a birthday cake in Sixteen Candles. There’s Patrick (Heath Ledger) singing to Katarina (Julia Stiles) on the bleachers in 10 Things I hate About You. And who can forget Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) blaring Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” outside Diane Court’s (Ione Skye) in Say Anything. Be ready to include the closing scene of Simon (Nick Robinson) waiting on the Ferris wheel for online pen pal Blue from Love, Simon.
After being outed by a student, infuriating his friends for deceiving them in his attempt to stay closeted and abandoned by Blue, Simon makes a plea to meet with Blue face to face on the Ferris Wheel at a carnival. As he rides on the Ferris Wheel, he, fellow classmates and the audience wait in anticipation for Simon’s happy ending.
5) The Book Heist from AMERICAN ANIMALS
When Spencer Reinhard (Barry Keoghan) and Warren Lipka (Evan Peters) plotted to steal extremely valuable books from the Transylvania University library in Kentucky, they thought they had the perfect heist. With the help of their friends Erick Borsuk (Jared Abrahamson) and Chas Allen (Blake Jenner), they thought they pull off a heist as smooth as Oceans 11.[3]
But reality hits them like a sledge hammer when they try to pull off the heist. Unlike their dreams, Librarian Betty Jean Gooch (Ann Dowd) doesn’t get knocked out with one taser jolt. It also isn’t easy to lug a six-foot book down a flight of stairs. Then there’s the fact the basement has no exit. That’s just a few of many problems they never consider. From then on, we witness them pay a huge price for their hubris and lack of real-world understanding.
Only youths as smart as they are to come up with such a stupid plan.
4) The Mutant Bear from ANNIHILATION
Biologist Lena (Natalie Portman) and her team find themselves in a quite a bind. After entering the Shimmer, physicist Josie Radek (Tessa Thompson) has barely survived an attack from a mutant alligator and Anthropologist Cassie Sheppard (Tuva Novotny) has been attacked by a bear. Now paramedic Anya Thorensen (Gina Rodriguez) has gone mad and has tied up Lena, Radek and Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh). But when they hear Sheppard’s cries for help, they will soon find Anya is the least of their worries.
Their journey delivers many grotesque, nightmare inducing visuals (especially the slithering intestines.) But the most memorable moment in this film was the image of the helpless crew trapped in a cabin with a mutant bear. Bears are scary enough on their own, but a faceless one is pants spitting meeting. And then you hear it imitate Sheppard’s screams and suddenly you need a new pair of pants.
3) The Great Snap from AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
The whole Marvel Cinematic Universe had been leading up to this moment. The fact that nearly every character had a moment to shine in this one movie demonstrates the astounding direction of the Russo Brothers. But despite all the epic fight scenes, everyone agrees that this film’s greatest scene is the heroes moment of defeat.
Despite every effort made to stop in, despite outnumbering Thanos and despite Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) sacrificing Vision (Paul Bettany) to destroy the mind stone, Thanos still got all the infinity stones. And with a single snap, Thanos succeeds in wiping out half the universe’s population. One by one, we watch many of our heroes vanish into dust while others watch in helpless horror. But none are more heartbreaking that the moment when Spider-Man (Tom Holland) falls into Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) arms, crying “I don’t want to go.” All because some characters couldn’t make the sacrifice needed
Yes, we knew he was going to succeed in the end.[4] And yes, you know most of the heroes won’t stay gone.[5] And yes, their return will likely involve the surviving heroes sacrificing themselves.[6] But the ending still feels powerful despite this knowledge.
It all concludes with Thanos sitting near a cottage, content in his triumph. If the MCU ended here, it would have been a perfect ending. But I’m still curious to see how this will go.
2) The Closing Close-Up in CAPERNAUM
The closing image of Zain’s (Zain Al Rafeea) face will haunt you beyond the closing credits. Throughout the film, we’ve seen this kid struggle through hell on the streets of Lebanon, trying to protect his sister from their resentful parents and helping an Ethiopian Migrant Worker take care of her son. But when he’s sent to prison for assaulting a pimp who bought his sister, he decides to sue his parents for the crime of bringing him into this miserable world. Writer/director Nadine Labaki never looks away for a second to the brutality of Zain’s world and how it brings out the worst in Zain.
When the film freezes to the image of Zain smiling for a Passport photo, your heart breaks for him as Khaled Mouzanar’s haunting score plays out.
1) Tish and Fonny’s Walk Through the Park in IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
No other opening scene has done a better job of putting its audience under its spell than when loving couple Tish (Kiki Layne) and Alfonzo “Fonny” Hunt (Stephan James) stroll through a park holding hands.
There’s beauty in every element of this scene, from Nicholas Britell’s romantic score to the warm looks in the character’s eyes. But what really sells it is James Laxton’s lush cinematography. The colours pop through the yellows and blues on the couple’s clothes and the green of the grass. You are as in love with this couple as they are for each other.
Then the film cuts to Tish visiting Fonny in prison, this time the yellow is the prison, the blue is Fonny’s jumpsuit and the green is on Tish’ outfit. From then one, we know why their love is worth fighting for.
[1] Mostly at the expense of Ariel (Jodi Benson)
[2] Especially when she appears so prominently in the advertisements.
[3] As indicated by a fantasy sequence.
[4] Since we know this was going to be a two parter.
[5] Especially when there are already planned sequels to Black Panther, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. After all the money Marvel’s got from Black Panther? They’re not going to give up that meal ticket.
[6] What with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans retiring their characters.

Okay fuck it let’s go down this rabbit hole
-Looking for something to chill out to/smoke to (if that’s your thing) that’s not “chill lofi hip hop to relax and study to”? Try the genre of downtempo. Moreso popularized in the 90s, it’s always been a go-to genre for me. I suggest artists Lemon Jelly, Wax Tailor (if you like more lyricism/samples), and of course Bonobo, Tycho, and Air
-related to downtempo is breakbeat and turntablism, which focuses more on use of turntables and samples for more upbeat tunes. I suggest starting with artists Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow (more straight-up experimentalism in his later works, later works channel more into pure underground hip hop), RJD2, Blockhead (earlier works) and Kid Koala (who was the producer for underground hip hop group Deltron 3030, with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and Dan the Automater)
-I’m fairly into underground hip hop as kind of a stem off of downtempo/breakbeat. A lot of producers from breakbeat/downtempo collaborate with underground rappers to create some fire jams that the radio won’t ever play. I mentioned Deltron 3030 with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (who was a prominent member of Heiroglyphics in the 90s), Aesop Rock (one of my top faves, he collaborates with Blockhead on occasion and also has been proven to have arguably the largest vocabulary in hip hop), Madvillain (made up of MF DOOM & Madlib, both equally talented on their own), and Jedi Mind Tricks
-ever wanted to get into “world” music but tired of everyone suggesting Paul Simon’s Graceland over and over? Are you a fan of the Grateful Dead, specifically their drummer Mickey Hart? He put out an album in 1991 called Planet Drum that’s just up your alley. I’d also argue that Blue Man Group is a good representation of modernized world music. I basically grew up on their album Audio along with Planet Drum (which is probably why I’m a percussionist in the end)
-interested in obscure instrumental music from the 70s and 80s that’s not disco and glam rock? Three main suggestions: Mort Garson’s Plantasia (one of the first albums to use a Moog synthesizer), Penguin Cafe Orchestra’s Preludes, Airs, and Yodels (technically produced in the 90s but close enough), and Pierre Moerlen’s Gong’s Time is the Key
-what I mainly listen to for fun these days is UK-based alt-indie/alt-pop which is nice because the bands play gigantic venues in and around the UK but when they come to the US they book much smaller/intimate venues. My reccomendations are Everything Everything (other top favorite band of all time), Sundara Karma, Yeasayer (based out of NYC but they have a similar sound), and Young Fathers
-modern-day surf rock has especially a really good summer vibe (for obvious reasons) and I really dig listening to this genre on long road trips. Some favorite bands are Slaughter Beach Dog, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, The Beths, Surf Curse, and Beach Fossils
-I don’t listen to it often but another fun little genre is Witch House/Grave Rave, Spotify has some good playlists of those. Kinda makes me think of spooky twists on house music from what I’ve heard of it. 10/10 would recommend for a Halloween rave
-speaking of being a percussionist, contemporary percussion ensemble/solo literature is BIZARRE to say the least, but man it’s funky. I recommend going on YouTube and watching the full effect. Some groups I recommend watching are Third Coast Percussion, Sandbox Percussion, and So Percussion, along with the Vic Firth library for solo works. Collegiate studios are also a decent choice to watch. Definitely check out works by Steve Reich, ?Corporal by Steve Schick (with the ?, that’s no typo), and Aphasia by Mark Applebaum (yes, it’s considered percussion)
Hhhhhhh I’m on a kick of obscure music recommendations but nobody irl ever asks me for them/about them and I’m sad that I’m jamming out all alone when these artists are so good and I have so many specific recommendations
#not using the term hyperdixation bc not ADHD/ASD but definitely fine-tunded interests#my posts#i just hope this doesnt come off as music snobbish im just really excited about music genres

a playlist featuring: Anthony Rapp (I guess?), Knee Breaker, Niiice., Future Teens, Mom Jeans., Oso Oso, Slaughter Beach, Dog, Foxy Dads, Rat Kid Cool.
“Rent” by Anthony Rapp, others - You will hear this song, and I guarantee that it will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. There’s so much overall Frustration At The System(tm) contained in its lyrics and in Anthony Rapp’s voice that I pretend to sing it when I’m mad at the world.
“Elena’s House” by Knee Breaker - For some reason, this song reminded me of “Buttercup” by Slaughter Beach, Dog. (Scroll down a few songs to hear that.) They hardly sound similar, but I think the same sentiment of reconnecting with old loves in the form of ramble-y, storytelling lyrics; “Why don’t you go out and have a drink/talk about what you’ve been doing/tell me every thing you think”.
“When Noah met Allie” by Niiice. - So yes, this band has the second-coolest name of any band we’ve ever featured (behind Dump Him) but— get this— the song is ALSO good. The chorus somehow manages to capture everything I’m afraid of about myself and I still enjoy it.
“Expiration Dating” by Future Teens - Literally about accidentally ghosting someone from a dating app, this is another Future Teens song that’s also the story of my life. It features the line “you were gone before you were something to lose”, which is the world’s deepest stab in the chest when I listened to this song for the first time right after getting screwed over by someone who I thought might *actually* like me.
“Scott Pilgrim vs My GPA” by Mom Jeans. - So my mother and I go to the grocery store every Sunday and I get to pick the music on the way there, and I played her this song. She said she liked the horn on it and I responded with the fact that he legit played the trombone both onstage and in the audiotree session and she thought that was just dandy, so I decided that needed to be brought up.
“Track 1, Side A” by Oso Oso - I’m seeing them tonight at my friend’s college because I can still pass as a student so might as well take advantage of that and go to college shows and not look particularly weird so that’ll be FUN.
“Buttercup” by Slaughter Beach, Dog - The second recounting-love-that’s-been-lost song on this playlist, in my mind this song is a consistent rotation of positive to negative emotions, depending on when I listen to it. Some fun, painful lyrics: “We made our exchange/how little we had changed/anxious and unsure and weird”, “And she asked how the hell/if I felt like I felt/with you did I move on so soon”, and “We wait for your ride with you standing by my side/and you know it aint me that you need”
“Good Clean Living (Interlude)” by Foxy Dads - “The mornings got a whole lot brighter/when I accepted nothing’s like it was before”. Ok, so, this song is like META honest. Just listen to the song. Pay attention to the lyrics. I can’t. Like. I wish I could explain this in a better way. the song is 1:11, take the goddamn minute.
“Patagonia” by Rat Kid Cool - Honestly, Rat Kid Cool just puts me in a good mood. This song just makes everything feel lighter. The opening lyrics is “I found a brand new patagonia/it was a womens’ extra large”. Like how can you not be in a good mood after that?
