it's been mentioned that Thea speaks Italian, and thus is teaching Elli Italian, in like chapter one or two, but I want to make it known that Thea would 100% cuss out anyone in Italian and they'd turn to Jay for a translation, at which he simply shrugs because he either doesn't know what she's saying because she's never said those specific words around him before or he'd rather not be on the receiving end

Nameless - Snippet “Marco Polo, bitch.”
Genre: Mafia AU, gang AU, BTS
Pairings: Yoongi x Reader, maybe eventual BTS x Reader, BTS x BTS
Warnings: Cursing. Gang violence. Gun violence. Kidnapping. Angst. Future fluff. Future smut. Referenced suicide attempt
------ Summery
As her little speech came to an end everyone gaped at her. Then she suddenly felt a gust of wind in front of her. She started breathing through her nose as soon as she felt fingers tightening around her throat.
"Tell me how you know that name", Yoongi demanded in a cold and deadly voice that usually had everyone scrambling to their knees to do everything he pleases. But not the girl in front of him, no, she looked him straight in the eye and smirked.
"Marco Polo, bitch."
________________________________________________________________
Marco Polo is an Italian Korean gang that traveled through Asia and eventually settled in South-Korea. It is known for its multiple locations around the world with the three main ones in Sicily, Tokyo and now Seoul. Their name is of course inspired by Marco Polo, but also the radioactive chemical Polonium.
Their members are poisonous, according to Yoongi. Poisonous little fuckers who always appear when you least expect it. Marco Polo and Bangtan have been at each other's throat ever since the Italian gang decided to stay in Seoul. After the last gang war ended in a truce he thought he’d seen the last of them but as Yoongi steps into club Downtown he will come to find out that that can’t be further from the truth.
------ Word Count: 800
"I could kill you right now, you know? So, I'd watch that pretty mouth of yours sweetheart".
"Kay? The ability to kill me is nothing impressive and it's also not the best threat, you wanna know why, handsome?"
She fluttered her eyelashes at him and tilted her head slightly to the right, becoming the perfect picture of innocence. God, the things Yoongi could do to destroy that he thought as he scoffed loudly.
"Yes, I would love to know how this does not look like a threat to you", he said, smiling to himself as Taehyung placed the barrel of his gun against her temple.
"It's cause my neighbors could kill me if they wanted to, the cute barista from Downtown could too, hell even I could kill myself. Believe it or not I tried to, but as you can see my attempts have been rather futile."
She stared him right in the eyes and Yoongi felt himself get lost in those green pools of every emotion but the one he expected. He saw no fear, distress, surprise or even anger. Not even disgust. No, it was hard to get an idea of what was going on behind the windows to her soul. Did she even have one? Because having a soul meant having a mind, a mind that's supposed to be able to think rationally. A mind that's supposed to be giving signals to her body that she is in danger right now.
Still, all he saw was mischief, courage, calmness, even boredom. Boredom of all things. The girl had a fucking gun to her head, was tied down to a chair with nowhere to go and she had the audacity to look bored.
She took him out of his thoughts when he started seeing her mouth move again, tongue rolling around to create syllables to words no one had ever dared to speak to him.
"Killing doesn't make you powerful, because anyone can do it. Even a little kid could take a knife in their hands and push it somewhere in to your body. It's the ones that survive that knife you need to watch out for. As the brilliant Kelly Clarkson once said: 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'."
"I don't think you got the point though, sweetheart. All the power in this room right now belongs to me. I-"
"No, it doesn't and no, I most certainly did get the point. I know that you call the shots here but that's exactly it. After you let blondie over here shoot me, I go on my merry way to meet dear old Luci. So my mind won't be here anymore but I still hold the power over your next decision."
Taeyhung scoffed when he heard the nickname and flicked his hair, this only provoked a giggle out of the girl. He was getting annoyed, no scratch that, he was annoyed and was starting to get angry. He brought his finger closer to the trigger. God, did he want her to stop talking and smiling like she wasn't about to be bleeding out on this floor.
Yoongi on the other hand only got more intrigued. The way the girl spoke freely to him was new and unfamiliar. Only his inner circle could talk to him like that and even then he usually got irritated by it. This girl right here, who still hadn't told him her fucking name, was a mystery to him and Yoongi didn't like mysteries. He wasn't here to play clues but still he sat there, on his velvet seat, trying to figure out the impeccable woman in front of him.
"Why do you think you have any power over any decision I make, huh?", he wasn't any closer to getting information from her and it started to get at him. The night had been tiring enough and his patience was running extremely thin at this point.
"Cause when I'm here, bleeding out on this floor, you're going to have to decide what to do with my body. Within the first hour you will need to think about it. Even if you don't acknowledge it with words and just a head nod to Jung Hoseok over there. It's still gonna be me you're thinking about."

Dexter Family Newsletter 2019
Dexter Family Newsletter 2019
As I reflect back on our year, I can’t help but think of Charles Dickens and his classic line…..It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…...and how appropriate it might be to summarize our 2019.
It was the age of wisdom…….as in Kelsi completing her first year in grad school at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. If you didn’t know Kelsi and listened to her talk about school, you might think she is barely passing.  If I had a nickel for every time Kelsi told me something like….That final exam did not go well; I did terrible….Only for me to later find out that she got something like a 107 on the test, well then I might have a lot of nickels to jingle in my pocket.  Kelsi is getting all A’s as usual and well on her way to graduating in 2020 with a Masters in Speech Pathology.  She is enjoying her classes and her clinical training, and has a great supervisor who is guiding her to be gainfully employed later in 2020, most likely in a school setting.  Nic is also excelling at Rockhurst and working on his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. What impresses me most about Nic and Kelsi is that they indeed have wisdom in their respective areas of study. In other words, they really seem to know their shit.  Meanwhile, Kaylee Jo is now in her sophomore year in high school where she obsesses about getting good grades, which she always does.  Ava Jae is in 8th grade and doing well.  Don’t tell anyone, but, I consider her my smartest kid.
It was the age of foolishness…….as in Mike spending countless hours managing and competing in a mere 7 fantasy football leagues, or in Mike completing his 42nd Old Chicago World Beer Tour.  Along the way, I earned a leather lettermen jacket which Kelly just today told me that I looked like my Dad when wearing it.  I took that as a compliment and proudly wore it about town where people looked at me in awe, as they often do, but, I digress.  Mike also became a more well-rounded drinker in 2019. You see, I was lucky to get to spend a lot of time with my eldest daughter this summer who not only got me addicted to the Crime Junkies Podcast, but also too good wine.  Credit is also due to the great Tackes family for showing me the redeeming virtues of drinking wine and now even whiskey.  So don’t be surprised to see me knocking back a Red Cab or sipping a bourbon in a cool sophisticated fashion.  If only, I had known about these things years ago…..what might have been, or perhaps not been, like 42 beer tours.
It was the epoch of belief……..in love and marriage as Kelsi became Mrs. Nic Arnone on August 10th in what turned out be an awesome ceremony and beautiful day for the two of them.  When they were both working on details like what are we having for having for dessert a couple of days before the big day, I was frankly a little worried, but, as it turns out the two of them are master wedding planners.  Everything was great from the venue, to the decorations, to the caterer, to the photographer, and most importantly…..to the bartender, backed by yours truly stocking the bar.  Yes, we had an awesome reception and we were so blessed to have so many of you travel all the way to Kansas City to celebrate with us!  In case you weren’t able to be there, rumor has it that there is video available of Mike’s fantastic wedding toast speech.  Sure, there are critics like Kaylee and Ava who will say, it wasn’t all that, but, most of those at the reception gave me high fives for my performance…at least the ones who were drinking that is. Kelsi is most happy that as a Speech Therapist that I finally learned how to pronounce her new last name.  For those of you who don’t know, you need to emphasize the last “e” in Arnone as it is an Italian name.  After meeting Nic’s family, I finally believe he is indeed Italian, after I had long presumed he was Norwegian or Swedish given his fair skin, blue eyed, blonde hair good looks.
It was the epoch of incredulity…….and speaking of family heritage, Mike took the Ancestry DNA test in 2019. Upon arrival of the test kit, I was in great disbelief as to how hard it actually is to fill up a one ounce test tube with saliva. Trust me, it was challenging.  As it turns out, I am 59% English, 33% Irish, 3% Swedish, 3% German, and 2% Norwegian, which makes me 110% Awesome, which I didn’t need a DNA test to know. So far, it is incredulous that I have not found any long lost rich relatives who want to connect with me, but, I will keep the hope. Speaking of incredulous, Ava will be in high school next year, while Kaylee will have her Driver’s License in as few as 17 more days!  I for one can’t believe we all survived her driver’s training, which started in local parking lots and proceeded to hairpin turns, around tight corners, at the speed of light. Only A.J. Foyt could have pulled off some of the harrowing driving miracles that I witnessed at times this summer!  But, we all survived, and with no dents in our vehicles!  I joke (sort of); Kaylee is actually a very good driver and was even told that she best driver in her Driver’s Ed class.  So you can feel safe when you see her drive by you in her 2007 BMW, which Drew gave to her as a Christmas present to her shrieking delight.  This is now the 2nd time Drew has given a car to one of his sisters.  I can only hope that he has another one to hand down to Ava in a few years.  The good news for Ava is that Drew has said that his next car will be a Tesla.
Even more incredulous is that a once self-proclaimed liberal, who once carved a pumpkin in the likeness of then candidate Barack Obama is morphing into a conservative right before our very eyes.  Yes, people are in a state of disbelief over these developments.  While he does not yet host a show on Fox News, many have looked in disbelief at Mike as he shares his theories on the likes of capital punishment.  Not to mention, the poor teachers of Dunlap who look to their email boxes in fear that they might receive another long diatribe from Mike on what is wrong with our educational system. Don’t worry, Mike still has a few liberal ideas and is still proud of President Obama.  But, might we see a Trump carved pumpkin on Mike’s doorstep in 2020?
As a final point on incredulity, I bet you can’t believe how long this newsletter is as I can’t believe you are still reading it.  Don’t worry, more good stuff is coming.
It was the season of light……for Nic and Kelsi who enjoyed an awesome honeymoon trip to Disney and the bright beaches of Ft. Lauderdale.  Kelly and Ava also traveled to sunny Florida, with stops at Disney and the beaches of Tampa-St. Pete, while attending Ava’s Starquest World Dance Finals in Orlando.  Ava and her dance teammates at MLSD continued to shine on the dance floor, while bringing home lots of trophies along the way.  Ava and her DMS POMS teammates also brought home a trophy from the State Finals this year in the Jr. High Division. Ava is again on the DMS POMS team and also spending lots of time at the MLSD dance studio.  We can’t wait to see her compete again in 2020, which will include her first ever solo performance. And, her latest dance project involves trying to teach her Dad how to dance in Tik Tok videos with her!  These will surely go viral. Meanwhile, Ava is still Ava….always energetic, always wanting to do something, always wanting Starbucks, and always, always asking me for something or to do something.  She is my constant season of light.  In fact, I sometimes think of Ava as Carol Anne like from the Poltergeist movie.  You see she has a life force that is hard to match and keeps me smiling, cursing, smiling, yelling smiling and speaking of yelling….. Kelly might occasionally yell at Ava (as she is this very minute!) and/or Kaylee for their continued inability and/or unwillingness to do seemingly simple things like throw a wrapper in the actual garbage can, maintain a room where you can actually see the floor, etc. Kelly is still Kelly, the straw that stirs our drink, the one who tries to keep us in check, and the one we, including our dogs can all rely on.  Kelly continues to work with awesome kids, who happen to have a few special needs, at Dunlap Middle School.  I likely have said this before, but, they, like us, are lucky to have her.
The season of light was also in full effect for Drew in 2019.  Like most people do, he took a month vacation, this time in sunny South Africa, where he did things like go on a safari, dive into the ocean in a shark cage to see a Great White, see the great water falls of Victoria Falls, hang out in the desert of Namibia, and lounge on the beaches and climb the mountains of Cape Town.  He also spent a month in Manhattan for work. Drew lives in the River North area of Chicago, where we all enjoy visiting him.   Thanksgiving in Chicago was a highlight.  In January, Drew has plans to visit Vietnam for a few weeks and make a stop at Boracay in the Philippines.  Yes, it sucks to be Drew.  He will also have extended work assignments in Boston and Washington, D.C., so stay tuned to his social media pages for amazing photographs and drone videos to document his journeys.
It was the season of darkness…….for both Mike and Kaylee, who unlike the rest of the family did not feel the sand under their toes of the warm sunshine upon their faces.  The longest trip these two took in 2019 was to Rochester, Minnesota, in the midst of winter, to attend Kaylee’s Speedo Sectional Championship Meet.  Despite the cold and snow, we both had fun.  And in the hopes of coming out of the darkness, I admit to the world (and mostly Kelly) that I received a speeding ticket on the way home, while dodging potholes and trying to stay interested while driving the monotonous roadways of the northland.  This has been a secret that only Kaylee and I have shared, with Kaylee often smiling and blurting out a whoo-whoo-police siren like sound anytime she felt it necessary to seek favor with me, while in the presence of my wife. So, Kelly, my beautiful, loving, forgiving wife, now you know and Kaylee, you have nothing to hold over my head any longer, at least for the time being.
It was the spring of hope…….for Kaylee and her commitment to the sport of swimming. She continues to love the sport, and work hard, and has renewed resolve to achieve her goals.  She has a group of great friends on the team and is driven by Jersey Mike, her new coach, who yours truly worked hard to recruit to Peoria, along with the rest of it was the PAWW team.  Kaylee made a tough decision to forgo her high school swim season in favor of making a greater training commitment.  I was proud of her resolve in making this decision and remain proud of her in all aspects of what she does, and who she is, with the great exception of her sense of what a clean room is J.
It was the winter of despair…….as Kelly and Mike look around their house and dream of home improvements in 2020, while still wondering how we can pay for things like dance classes, swimming, and college.  Kelly and Mike did close out the year by replacing our 20 year old kitchen appliances.  Back to those kids who can’t seem to hit the broad side of a barn with a wrapper, let alone a waste basket, we purchased a fancy new waste can in a last ditch effort to solve the problem. The new stainless steel trash can is our new pride and joy and opens automatically at the wave of the hand.  While enjoying all this new technology, our dryer just went out, so back to Sherman’s we go!  Speaking of technology, Kelly and Mike finished the year with a fun night in Chicago where a true life robot delivered “forgotten toothbrushes” to our room. In addition to home improvements in the New Year, more resolutions for Mike include meditation, yoga, and drinking more wine (but only the good stuff).  I think all three of these can likely be done at the same time.
Yes, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times….Like all families, we had some challenges to deal with, but those were far outweighed by many blessings. I am very lucky to have an awesome wife, four awesome kids and new son-in-law, our two awesome dogs Tahyo and Isla, along with our awesome family and friends.  We have had a wonderful Christmas as a family and look forward to a great 2020! Thank you and Merry New Year to you all!  May God bless you in new ways in the New Year!
P.S. – I consider this a living document in that I will likely be asked to edit for omissions, inaccuracies, offenses to my beloved family members, or over the likely fact that I wrote some of the same exact words last year.

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: he had a panic attack in the middle of his treasurer speech freshman year. someone pulled the fire alarm right as he couldn’t breathe. to this day, peyton has no idea who that was, but he’s so friggin’ thankful. BIGGEST SECRET: his biggest secret’s not even known to him yet. matthew pellegrino isn’t his father; he’s his kidnapper. peyton pellegrino’s fake. doesn’t exist. TOP PRIORITIES: having monty and tess’s backs. taking care of his dad, since he’s still reeling from peyton’s mom leaving almost 17 years ago. bringing the lacrosse team to the state championships. making sure every single thing he does for west ham high’s theatre department is flawless: making art on that stage. finding out how to... conquer this anxiety. finding out how to muster up enough courage to make a move before it’s too late.

Welcome to Part Three of 15 Years of Mysteries! The Mystery Book Club (at my local library) kicked off its third year of reading with a tie in to a local community initiative.
In the late 1990s / early 2000s, several communities across the United States created “If all of {city name} read the same book” initiatives to promote reading and discussion. Syracuse’s version, CNY Reads One Book, launched in 2001/2002 with A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines in conjunction with Syracuse Stage which mounted a production of the stage play of Gaines’ work in February/March 2002.
For the 2005/2006 season, the CNY Reads One Book program selected Miriam Grace Monfredo’s North Star Conspiracy. Monfredo’s first novel, Seneca Falls Inheritance, is set against the backdrop of the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention and was an Agatha award nominee for Best First Mystery Novel in 1992. Her second novel, North Star Conspiracy, incorporated the Underground Railroad and abolitionist movements as part of the story.
We were fortunate to host the author for a lecture (followed by a Q&A) at my local library as part of this initiative, and naturally our Mystery Book Club was ready having picked the book for our inaugural read of 2006.
January 2006 Special Event selection
North Star Conspiracy by Miriam Grace Monfredo
Synopsis:  Librarian Glynis Tryon is drawn into the Underground Railroad movement as she investigates the death of a freed slave in this second book of the series.
Thoughts:  An excellent, well researched historical mystery set in Seneca Falls, NY. Glynis is an engaging sleuth.
  February 2006 selection
Death by Chocolate by Diane Mott Davidson
Synopsis:  Goldy Bear is dealing with an abusive ex-husband, a moody teenaged son, and a fledgling catering business. On top of that she witnesses the death of a handsome local shrink. Only she isn’t sure it was just an accident.
Thoughts:  This second book in the Goldy Culinary Mystery series was well-written and entertaining. Not having read the first book prior to this one didn’t have much impact on enjoying the story.
  March 2006 selection
Death by Darjeeling by Laura Childs
Synopsis:  Theodosia Browning left behind the cutthroat world of advertising to return to her roots and open a tea shop in Charleston, South Carolina, but it’s not long before she’s solve less than genteel murder cases. In this series debut, Theodosia caters a home and garden party that ends with a guest dead and clutching an empty teacup. It’s up to Theodosia to clear her reputation and find a killer.
Thoughts:  The novel introduces a cast of colorful characters in a charming setting. It’s a solid debut and mystery plot. Best read accompanied by a cup of tea.
  April 2006 selection
The Amber Room by Steve Berry
Synopsis:  After the death of her father, Rachel Cutler sets off on a journey to uncover a secret history and a lost treasure.
Thoughts:  I remember this being a rather exciting read with lots of interesting historical tidbits.
  May 2006 selection
The Madman’s Tale by John Katzenbach
Synopsis:  A former asylum inmate faces dark memories of the time he was incarcerated, recalling visions of serial killer.
Thoughts:  While a great example of the “unreliable narrator” troupe, this book somewhat misses the mark. Part of this stemmed from a muddled narrative. It’s a better story about the struggles of mental illness than a mystery.
  June 2006 selection
Long Time Gone by J. A. Jance
Synopsis:  J.P. Beaumont investigates a half-century-old murder that may have ties to a more recent slaying involving the ex-wife of Beaumont’s former partner.
Thoughts:  I liked this book, but again, this was well into the series’ run so I felt a disconnect to the character’s history and background circumstances.
  July 2006 selection
The Villa of Mysteries by David Hewson
Synopsis:  The body of a girl is found along the banks of the Tiber River at an archaeological dig. The corpse appears to have been involved in an ancient Dionysian ritual, but this death doesn’t date back to ancient times. Italian detective Nic Costa and his team are assigned to investigate. When the daughter of a British tourist is kidnapped, it becomes a race against time to solve the case before she becomes the next victim.
Thoughts:  Reading this police procedural was a lot like watching a cop drama show. Many of the characters had their own subplots. At times (especially early on), the story seemed a bit disjointed, but it all came together satisfyingly in the end.
  August 2006 selection
The Sultan’s Seal by J. B. White
Synopsis:  In the waning days of the Ottoman Empire, magistrate Kamil Pasha investigates the death of an Englishwoman that may have political ramifications.
Thoughts:  This debut novel is an intriguing historical mystery that takes readers to an under-used time and place in the genre.
  August 2006 Special Event selection
The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl
Synopsis:  A Baltimore lawyer delves into the mystery of Edgar Allan Poe’s death. To help him solve the case, the lawyer tracks down the real-life model for Poe’s famed detective, C. Auguste Dupin.
Thoughts:  I’d previously read Pearl’s The Dante Club which featured Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, and J. T. Fields. These literary giants are working on the first American translation of The Divine Comedy, but the project is imperiled by a killer who appears to be mimicking the scenes from the Dante Alighieri’s work. While Pearl’s sophomore effort isn’t as solid as his debut, the blend of fact and fiction make for an engaging read.
  September 2006 selection
Steeplechase by Jane Langton
Synopsis:  In the 18th and final book in the Homer Kelly series, historian Homer Kelly and his wife, Mary, search for a lost church that has ties to a Civil War era feud.
Thoughts:  This was a disappointing read. The expectation is that it’s a murder mystery story. It is not. This novel fits more firmly in the historical fiction vein. The storytelling is actually fine, but those looking for a detective story won’t be satisfied by the modern day hunt for a lost church steeple.
  October 2006 selection
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
Synopsis:  Sookie Stackhouse is gifted or cursed depending on what you think precisely, but she can read your mind literally. Of course when a serial killer is targeting women who are dating vampires, reading minds can sure help. Oh, vampires? In Sookie’s world they exist, and she’s started dating one. Unfortunately, that makes her the killer’s next target.
Thoughts:  A little horror or the paranormal make for a great October read leading up to Halloween. And yes, this series debut novel has all the hallmarks of a classic mystery. The whodunnit aspect of the novel was just as satisfying as being introduced to Sookie’s world and the books and TV series, True Blood, that followed.
  November 2006 selection
A Field of Darkness by Cornelia Read
Synopsis:  Madeline Dare followed her heart to marry ruggedly handsome Dean, a farmboy-genius investor. Now Maddie’s stuck in the post-industrial wasteland of Syracuse, NY, while her husband spends weeks on the road perfecting the railway equipment innovation that might be their only chance to escape.  When a set of long-buried dog tags link her favorite cousin to the scene of a vicious double homicide, Maddie, drawn by the desire to clear her cousin’s name, uncovers a startling web of intrigue and family secrets that could prove even more deadly.
Thoughts:  I liked the mystery here (based on an actual local case) and the depictions of some of the characters. What I didn’t like was the constant bashing of the locale. We get it. The main character hates Syracuse!
  December 2006 selection
For the Love of Mike by Rhys Bowen
Synopsis:  In this three-time award-winning mystery, Molly Murphy goes undercover in the garment industry in 1901 New York City. She’s landed two cases: searching for the missing daughter of an Irish aristocrat and investigating a case of industrial espionage.
Thoughts:  Our group liked the first book so much (see the 2005 selection list), we decided to read the second!
***
And those were the selections for 2006. Another mixed bag of genre types. The reason for two selections in August was part of a cross promotion for another book club at the library meant to appeal to fiction and mystery genre readers alike.
In 2004, I began a book discussion group focused on the mystery genre. In the 15 years since, the Mystery Book Club has read more than 150 mysteries, suspense thrillers, and a few true crime tales. Follow along as I take you through the years in a look back at “15 Years of Mysteries.” Stay tuned for part four.

‘Our house is not abundant with kid’s stuff, and when I do have a guilty shop for toys, they tend to be tossed aside for playtime in the garden anyway,’ says Simone. Photo – Sarah Collins of Work + Co. for The Design Files.
In the early days, Simone felt guilt about working and so spent ‘every non-billable moment’ with the girls, but has now learned to enjoy some ‘me time’ too. Photo – Sarah Collins of Work + Co. for The Design Files.
‘I have the freedom to attend activities like Bush Playgroup with my girls or take a six-week summer break. But work follows me everywhere,’ tells Simone. Photo – Sarah Collins of Work + Co. for The Design Files.
I was excited this week by Kin & Kind’s Re-shaping After Career Breaking workshop, which brought together four experts in their fields to talk career advancement post-parenthood (I’ll be trying out job sharing platform Puffling, and have ordered Jayne Anderson’s Working It Out: Career, Family and You). Being realistic about who you are, where you’re at, and what you need was underscored as important – something designer, stylist, and mum to Goldie (three) and Clover (one) Simone Haag has down pat.
Today we catch-up with the in-demand creative on climbing new career heights with tikes.
After what I can only imagine was quite a wild time working in extreme sports, events and PR, you started at Hecker Guthrie as a receptionist – leaving eight years later as design and communications manager to have your first child and go freelance. Can I write your biography?!
Yes, please – it’s quite a story, with one incredible job leading to the next. It all started with a season at Mt Buller, where I met the crew from a Canadian heliboarding lodge. Before I knew it, I was working there, in Chamonix for two seasons, then at London’s Sanderson Hotel organising parties for the likes of Elton John, Madonna, and Sting.
After a chance meeting with Quiksilver’s CEO, I joined their boat, The Crossing, and sailed around the US for two years – doing events and PR with surfing legends like Kelly Slater. A spell spent working on private jets (my first flight involved escorting a Hollywood heavyweight to Fiji) led me back to Melbourne; I was ready to lay down some roots after reuniting with my now husband, Rhys.
I cold-called Hecker Guthrie in the hope of landing a comparatively settled job in a creative environment, and with enthusiasm, a sponge-like disposition, and hard work, my role grew from administration to design and communications. I found my mojo in the furnishing and layering stage of high-end residential projects, and today can’t quite believe I have a business completing client homes – my passion and livelihood rolled into one.
You’ve said, ‘I knew I couldn’t do the work in the same way and it felt like the right time to start out on my own.’ With mothers of young children being the fastest growing demographic of freelancers, you’re not alone. Do you think there’s a sense that it’s up to us to create roles that suit our families, not workplaces to become more family-friendly?
It’s an interesting question, and there’s no one-shoe-fits-all solution. I was certainly offered a flexible return to studio life but, like retiring after winning gold, I left when I knew I had given it my all. I was genuinely nervous that I wouldn’t be able to ensure the same commitment with a small person in tow.
As many would attest, being a freelancer is a blessing and a curse. I have the freedom to attend activities like Bush Playgroup with my girls or take a six-week summer break. But work follows me everywhere and, with the budgets I spend on behalf of my clients plus the expectations I place on myself, switching off isn’t easy.
I recall when Goldie was crawling, I’d pop her at one end of the hallway then race to the other to send a work email; when she caught up with me, I’d repeat the process. Luckily most of my clients are at ease with my juggle, and are happy to take calls after hours.
Work has been incredible – at last count, I had close to 20 projects on the go. Things really turned a corner when I employed my design assistant, Sarah Shinners; she’s allowed me to take time to work on my business, not just in it. I try very hard to provide a high level of customer service, and having Sarah assist with client support and supplier liaison has been a game changer.
Just back from a sourcing trip to New York, about to move into a shared space with Fred International, a new focus on high-end residential, plus a trip to the Milan Furniture Fair in April – you’re besieged but in a good way. Do you have any advice for other parents on career expansion with kids?
I found The Mother’s Mind Cleanse by The Broad Place an excellent tool. It encourages banishing words like ‘busy’ for phrases like ‘I am engaged in some exciting projects,’ and reframing the idea of ‘juggling’ with mantras such as ‘these are the moments that make up the hours, that make up the day, that are my life.’
I’ve also learnt I need to schedule time for me. In the early days, the guilt I felt about working meant I spent every non-billable moment with my babies – which was like having two full-time jobs (on very little sleep!). On my work days, finding balance can be as simple as coming home to have a shower, make a cuppa, and take a moment before crèche pick-up; it helps so much with compartmentalising my dual roles. I also try to make time for health and wellbeing, be it a Pilates class, health retreat, or dinner with the girls.
I would say the way to expand your career is to surround yourself with people who know more than you do; I am in the process of working with a business manager/mentor, and I can’t wait to see things through her eyes. Also try not to track what your competitors are doing – it will only spark insecurity. Rely instead on intuition, and realise at the end of the day what we do should be joyful.
Your Melbourne and Philip Island homes count among the most popular we’ve featured on TDF. Has your aesthetic changed at all since Clover and Goldie arrived on the scene, and is there anything you’ve had to sacrifice, or come to appreciate?
I won’t lie, I was a little scared pre-baby, but by the time you come out of that initial fog, you’re re-wired to lean into it. We have a cleaner once a week who restores balance, but what happens in-between is not a bother to me – as long as I can see the floor at the end of the day. Our house is not abundant with kid’s stuff, and when I do have a guilty shop for toys, they tend to be tossed aside for playtime in the garden anyway.
One thing I find interesting is the ‘we will wait until the children grow up and then buy such and such’ mentality. My advice would be to instil respect from the get go; invest in the pieces you love, and teach your kids the boundaries around those pieces. I’ve an open shelf full of ceramics, and the more special pieces are that little bit out of reach, but the girls rarely notice they are there.
I have come to appreciate our over-sized Carl Hansen Wing chair which has room for us all and, funnily enough, I can’t think of a thing we’ve sacrificed per se. Now that the house is feeling a little small (with the queue for the toilet a little long), we’ve engaged our friends at Kennedy Nolan to help us with creative solutions to expand on what we already have – and it’s all being rolled out by Design Orr Build as we speak. My aesthetic is changing all the time, and for the renovation I’m bringing back some vintage Italian pieces – I can’t wait to share some work-in-progress pics on Instagram!
Can you give us a glimpse into how your days start and end with Clover and Goldie?
I am not a morning person, so they never start early. One or both girls will make it into bed with me, and I’ll try every trick in the book to get a little more sleep. Breakfast involves porridge and a dance party and, because it’s almost impossible to get yourself and two toddlers ready for the day, I’m generally bra-less and in trackies for the bi-weekly crèche drop-off. I then head home to prepare for work – so much easier without two thigh-huggers bickering over the equal distribution of sultanas!
I very much look forward to the end-of-day routine, which is why I can count the number of times I’ve been out for dinner in the last three years on one hand. Our dining table has, up until now, served as my desk – so we often eat around the kiddy table (this always makes me giggle). I like a bath with the babies at the end of the day (until it all goes south when one of them does a number two), and like most parents enjoy the sound of silence when they go down. After that, I pick up some magazines, and start what we affectionately term ‘the night shift.’
Moving across time, what kind of adults might you like the girls to grow into? How would you like them to remember you to their own families?
Kind, inquisitive, and soulful. I would like them to remember that cuddles were a never-ending resource, and that growing up with a dog the size of a horse was normal.
Family Favourites
Clothing brand
Hubble + Duke is a favourite for the little ladies in my life.
Bedroom item
A new use for an old item. As mentioned, we’re renovating, so the girls are sharing which is all sorts of fun – particularly when the baby monitor lets us listen in to what they ‘chat’ about before sleep.
Activity or outing
Heading to our beach house on weekends; the girls play shop in their cubby house by Castle and Cubby.
Dinner destination
We’re very happy with a picnic dinner in the backyard. The girls think it’s fun, but it’s really my way of avoiding wiping the high chairs and sweeping the floors again!
Book, film or show
The girls love any Disney film where there’s a red-headed heroine, a bit of Pig the Pug, and putting on their own shows for the ‘grown nuts.’
