there's just something about characters who were romantically involved calling each other friend, in grief. they were my friend. they were my lover, but above all else they were my friend, my confidant, the one person who really knew me. i miss my friend. idk drives me insane.
#yes i am currently thinking about that scene with kira asking light about l in those who stand#and maybe it's the aspec in me but idk there's an intimacy the word friend encapsulates differently than any other romantic title#oof anyway

DN ask game: how about 18 and 23 (23 I will amend to 'one of your current favourite moments,' in case you are me and hate choosing favourites in any kind of absolute way haha)
CACKLES oh you know me so well =3=" original ask game
18. what do you think about Wammy’s House?
MY GOD. what do i NOT think about wammy's house. i feel like i've already talked a bit on wammy's house in Various Essays, but i suppose to coagulate some of those kinda random thoughts...
it Fucks those kids up. by nature of what wammy's house Is, i don't think it's possible for a single kid to get through it w/o getting at least a little fucked up. that goddamn orphanage is releasing a Storm of incredible messed up little geniuses on the world and the world will never recover. you can't create a fucking organization based around concepts like Live Up To The World's Greatest Detective or Never Ever Use Your Real Name (guess that's probably KIRA motivated, but still) without screwing over the sense of identity of an entire generation. nobody's doin it like them fr.
i really really really like the idea that people toss around about KIRA = god of the new world, therefore -> L = god of the old world, and i think wammy's house maps onto that idea super well as a kind of cult of the old god. something something greco-roman mystery cults, L as a void player homestuck classpect-wise, the Secrets and Idolization inherent to that entire entity. oh yeah it's all comin together rubs my hands eviley.
i saw someone say the LABB murders novel was bad the other day and almost cried because i personally Adore that book, for the additional naomi characterization + beyond moments yes, but also for the extra lore it establishes about wammy's and L more generally. having actual Generations within the house is so fucking fascinating by how you can break it down, especially when you try to fit L into it and maybe have a generation where he was interacting with the other kids during his kinda Rise to Power. i definitely think beyond and L interacted quite extensively at the very least (headcanon basis for that mostly, i just like the idea + it explains why he even got the idea to emulate him so closely), and the existence of A in and of itself is such a fascinating mystery, i love seeing how people mess with the idea of them in different ways.
also everyone go read heirs and spares for fantastic light-at-wammy's house content that almost reads like some of the best earliest parts of the promised neverland and also has some great L and light childhood worsties content. go go
also kira bless time speaks for writing that entire timeline where light and L go live at wammy's and traumatize mello w/ their horrible terrible flirting that is fucking saving me. i am so Desperate for more lawlight interacting with wammy's content i have no idea why that sets my brain off so bad but it Just Does. etc etc L negligent parent King for the win, i need to see near and L have the most horrible terrible psychological battles monologuing so loud it stinks up the entire damn room while mello and light are beating each other with bats in the background. please. lord.
also also roger's characterization in the seals are good series is unironically my accepted characterization for him now whoops. btw i don't think i have many Deep Thoughts on watari, he's kinda just a shitty old man philanthropist to me :/ though i do find him more interesting and Paternalistic with a good L genderbend.........
23. what was your favorite moment and why?
you said current favorite so honestly... ok i'll limit myself to two.
FAVORITE SCENE OF ALL TIME: LIGHT DYING. ez. specifically in the manga. there is legitimately no better scene in the entire series. this fucking panel haunts my dreams it's so goddamn Good
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e5159f05f8d4e35c63084c22ddb24f3c/955336bed1c1326f-86/s540x810/b7337d3a5f4821f010b74ce5549832bf5c9c90fd.webp)
there is nothing i love more in this world than watching light yagami bloody and pathetic crawling on the floor and begging for his life only to die like every other criminal he killed. his fear is so Palpable it literally makes me sick. i've read this final sequence, like ch.105-107 but especially this last bit so many goddamn times istg it's burned into my eyelids LIGHT YAGAMIIIIIIII. also his laugh in the anime is fucking incredible in both dubs 10/10 no notes you killed it fellas
FAVORITE SCENE AT THIS MOMENT: been thinking a Lot about both naomi and matsuda lately and their various notable scenes, oddly. i think i need to reread his entire comedy of errors during yotsuba again alskjfskjd and also check out naomi's death again esp in conjunction with LABB murder stuff?? idk. they're both characters that i feel i haven't talked much about (also kiyomi, thought i've been getting Thoughts on her LMFAO thank you forever @kiyomitakada) so i wanna get my image of them cleared up more in my head. also all of the SPK too, halle especially. damn i guess that's a whole lot of moments actually :P WHATEVER.
anyways ty for the ask <33
#death note#astronaut rambles#ask#thank you thank you thank you a million times for asking about wammy's#i love love love thinking about wammy's everyone go talk about how fucked up that house is even more#anyways another mini essay cuz i think the character limit for asks is way shorter than usual posts lol#this has been super nice to get some of my random DN thoughts together actually#sometimes i think i get too overwhelmed trying to do Everything at once so it's nice to have a structure like this that limits me to some#mini-er rambles

The Boxer - Stiles Stilinski
word count: 4497 warnings: swearing, I think that’s it a/n: based on this song
[ i am leaving, i am leaving // but the fighter still remains ]
Pack meetings were officially deemed the worst, in Stiles’ book anyways. Not only did he always get talked over, and picked on, but his opinions were never taken seriously. His arguments and decisions had no effect on the rest of the pack, and it was pointless for him to even try anymore. But he was too stubborn to give up.
Currently everyone was using the empty Biology classroom as a place for an emergency meeting.
“This can’t be a serious threat” Malia scoffed disapprovingly. “A pack of omegas? First of all, that’s redundant, even I know that” Lydia shrugged a shoulder and hummed in agreement with the coyote.
“She’s right” She said. “We’ve handled an alpha pack, and that wasn’t even too difficult looking back. What’re a bunch of omegas gonna do?”
“Need I remind you of that one who went rogue and tried killing Liam on the lacrosse field?” Stiles asked, crossing his arms over his chest in an irritated way.
“And the way (y/n) took care of it” Lydia said with an amused chuckle. Then her eyes widened as an idea enlightened her. “Oh my God, (y/n), that’s the answer”
“No!” Stiles shot down immediately, but the gears in the banshees mind were already turning. “No no no no no. No. I forbid it-”
“Wait..” Scott cut off his friend. “Lydia’s onto something here…”
“No!” Stiles whined desperately begging them not to go to (y/n). Anyone but (y/n).
“I mean, if she can take down a werewolf, with no super strength, no claws no fangs…” Lydia began, looking around at everyone for any kind of sign that this was a good idea. Malia was already grinning, excited about the idea. “She could definitely do it again, backed up by us”
“No”
“Yeah” Scott said, nodding with a growing smile. “She’s right”
“No!”
“I agree” Malia grinned. “I’d love to kick ass with (y/n). She’s hands down the coolest person in this whole school”
“Hurtful” Stiles muttered. “But still no!”
“How about we vote?” Scott offered, but Stiles only rolled his eyes in response.
“Everyone else has already agreed, I’m the only one with any common sense around here!”
“All who votes we get (y/n) on our side for this?” Lydia called, raising her hand. Everyone else, besides Stiles, put a hand in the air. The boy grumbled and scowled at the banshee.
“Good luck trying” He snarked before grabbing his backpack and bolting out of the classroom. Like she would ever agree to anyways.
(y/n) (y/l/n) was a badass by nature. Meaning she was born into it, raised into it. Her family being a renowned league of hunters, she knew a thing or two on how to get a job done quickly and efficiently. She was the reason BHHS had started a boxing club, and she solely held every winning title, for the past three years. The whole senior class knew she was a force to be reckoned with, especially after she beat up her first (and only) boyfriend in front of the entire cafeteria sophomore year. No one had bothered her since.
But the McCall pack knew there was more to be known about her, behind the scenes. She wasn’t just good at hand to hand combat and kickboxing, she was especially crafty with an array of weapons, typically used to hunt supernatural creatures.
The first time she’d stepped in on an incident was early last year. She’d been on campus late that night, boxing practice and some light studying, but she hadn’t expected to see Scott McCall and his girlfriend fighting off a Berserker. But with a hasty decision she joined in, seeing as they were losing terribly. With the swiftness of a fox she unsheathed her ring dagger from her ankle holster and threw it straight into the beast’s skull. Her peers, Kira Yukimura, Malia Tate, and Scott McCall himself, were baffled, not having known of her second life.
“This,” She’d spoken with an intense seriousness as she retrieved her weapon, “-this is a one time thing. You keep this to yourselves” She had pointed the blade between the three of them, before sheathing it again and going home.
As soon as Scott had told Stiles of the altercation, he’d grown obsessively fascinated by the girl. She’d always kept to herself, especially after her… boyfriend incident. But he’d seen her as an intelligent girl, always assuming she was just a little shy. But this was a game changer.
He’d gone to school asking questions, having a whole list of interrogating phrases in hopes of hearing her story. But she wasn’t interested in answering his nosy questions, and didn’t care that he was trying to put together the puzzle that was her. And after promptly telling him to fuck off, and denying that she had anything to do with the ‘story’ he was making up, Stiles left her alone.
Clearly, she wanted nothing to do with the pack.
But she’d helped them again, in a way. When the Beast of Gevaudan had attacked innocent students in the library, she’d aided them, brought them to safety, hid Scott’s werewolf features from view, and not to mention, managed to figure out who it had been, Mason Hewitt.
Then she dropped out of their lives again, just like that. There in desperate situations, and back the next day pretending she didn’t know a thing about Scott and his friends.
Until a week ago. When Liam had been running laps on the lacrosse field, she’d been staying late as usual, training in the school’s weight room, where the punching bag was. As she was heading to the parking lot, she’d heard the familiar sounds of werewolf growls, and at the last minute jumped in to save Liam’s life.
And now, she was back to ignoring them. At this point trying to swear of the McCall pack for good. All they did was got themselves into trouble, and the vendettas beasts seemed to hold against them only put the people of Beacon Hills into more danger.
So, (y/n) kept to herself. Training during free periods and after school, getting her studies done at home, and keeping her earbuds in to avoid interaction. There was no way she’d get involved with a group as reckless as them.
“I think I’ve made progress” Kira said as she sat down at the lunch table next to Scott.
“Oh really?” Stiles asked disbelievingly. “And what do you think you’ve done?”
“I waved at (y/n) in the hall” The kitsune stated proudly. “And she nodded back at me” Stiles scoffed, rolling his eyes. Surely that didn’t count.
“I’m not sure that really....” Lydia trailed off with a wince, not wanting to admit that Kira’s moment didn’t exactly mean anything. “I did follow her on instagram today, liked her three most recent photos, and left a nice comment on her recent”
“That doesn’t mean anything” Malia groaned. “Who cares? That’s just regular teenage trashy stuff-”
“Easy” Lydia scolded as she frowned. “Did you do anything?”
“I asked her to help us kill bad people” The coyote shrugged simply. Everyone hung their heads and grumbled, except for Stiles who laughed bitterly.
“What did I say? She’s not just going to succumb to your pitiful attempts at making friends with her. Trust me, I tried, she didn’t give a shit” He took a bite of his food before continuing. “She can probably smell bullshit from a mile away anyways”
“He’s probably right” Scott sighed. “All I did was sit next to her in Bio, and as soon as she saw me she picked up her things and went to a different table. It was… uncomfortable” Stiles belted out a laugh again.
“You stand no chances. I’m sure Liam just stared at her before walking away?” Stiles looked to the younger beta for confirmation, but Liam just ducked his head and silently ate his food. “That’s what I thought” He said with a cocky attitude. “Now, should we discuss my idea?”
“Have you tried?” Lydia questioned, before Stiles could voice his plan.
“What?” He muttered.
“Have you tried talking to her?” She clarified. “That was the agreed upon plan, you know” The banshee spoke mischievously and Stiles knew she was already coming up with a scheme.
“Of course not” He said lowly. “I was the one saying all along she wouldn’t listen to you-”
“Well we don’t know that she won’t listen to you” Kira piped up, only earning narrowed eyes from the skeptical boy.
“Yes, we do, last time I spoke to her? Got the middle finger and an accompanying message. I don’t think she’d care for any further advancements on my part”
“Maybe,” Lydia shrugged. “But maybe you’d already gotten a crack at her, and one more and she’ll break, and help-”
“No” Stiles shook his head. “I’m not going to go pressure her to help us, we can do this on our own” He looked to Scott for backup, but the alpha winced.
“I mean… it’s worth a shot-”
“Scott!”
“She’s got great aim! What am I supposed to say?” Scott asked, raising his hands in surrender. “I’m sorry it’s just… these things are always easier with…”
“-an experienced hunter” Lydia offered when Scott couldn’t finish. Liam nodded his head in agreement.
“She did save my life…”
“And mine too” Scott said.
“Me too” Kira added softly.
“I hate you all” Stiles announced, though of course it wasn’t true. “I guarantee when I talk to her I’m going to get socked in the face and wind up with a broken nose” But the pack smiled, glad he’d decided to try.
“Thank you, Stiles” Scott said, but his friend shook his head as he finished his food.
“I haven’t even done anything yet”
Stiles was standing in the hall outside the gym, tightly gripping the straps of his backpack and rocking on his feet. He knew that was he was about to do was invasive, and that she wouldn’t take kindly to seeing him in her space. But this was the only time he could think to speak to her privately.
When he walked through the gymnasium on his way to the weight room, he practiced in his head exactly what he wanted to say.
He took a deep breath before opening the door, all of his nerves spreading through his chest and all over his body he felt he was on fire. Seeing (y/n) in the corner of the room, going to town on the swinging punching bag, heavy duty headphones preventing her from hearing him enter.
It was both relieving and anxiety inducing, seeing her.
“Uh, (y/n)?” He called, before hitting his own head out of stupidity. Of course she couldn’t hear him. So, he walked over closer, until he was in her peripheral vision, and waved his hand slightly to catch her attention.
(y/n), however, had felt the floor vibrate slightly when the door to the weight room door had shut behind Stiles. She knew she wasn’t alone, but she didn’t think it was Stiles Stilinski who’d come in.
She knew for a fact he wasn’t here to work out either.
Casting him a side glance, she looked him up and down before going back to her workout. Not giving him another ounce of attention. Most things go away if you ignore them hard enough.
Stiles wasn’t one of those things.
Waving his hand again, he called her name and stepped closer than before.
Now she spun in place, pulling the headphones to rest around her neck on her shoulders, taking a large step towards him threateningly.
“Why are you here, Stilinski?” She asked, eyes penetrating his soul as she analyzed his every move.
“Uh- I-” Every rehearsed line Stiles had come up with vanished, suddenly his life seemed at stake. “You wouldn’t kill me on school property, would you?” his words came out a nervous string, and (y/n) rolled her eyes, stepping away.
“Answer the question” She monotoned, hand reaching up to stop her punching bag from swinging. “Here to make a move like the rest of your friends?”
“Kind of-”
“Get lost”
“You aren’t even going to hear me out?” He asked defeatedly, brows furrowing as he frowned. (y/n) pursed her lips and shook her head.
“No” She stated simply.
“We need your help, (y/n)-”
“What don’t you understand by get lost?” She asked rhetorically, eyes widening and finger pointing towards the door. But Stiles still didn’t leave.
“Let me finish” His annoyance began to shown through as he gritted his teeth. “There’s a pack of omegas out there, that’s why Liam was attacked, and we need your help. You’ve been the key to a few problems now and we think that with you on our side on this that it can be offer before it’s even an issue”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about” She said, feigning ignorance with ease. Lying was a key aspect to being a huntress. “I don’t need new friends, Stilinski, you can go now”
“Pretending it doesn’t exist won’t make it go away” Stiles said, starting to really test (y/n’s) nerves. “Will you even consider it? Give us a chance?” She stared at him with narrowed eyes, lips parting slightly as a small smile formed. Her tongue darted out to wet them before speaking again.
“Like I said, Stilinski, I don’t know a damn thing you’re babbling about,” She whispered as if there were other people there to keep hidden from, but they had the whole weight room to themselves. “So, unless you’re about to start lifting weights, get. Lost. Got it?” Her voice was so soft as she spoke quietly, but somehow he felt threatened by her words again.
“I knew it. Of course you won’t acknowledge it at all. I told them” Stiles said, making (y/n) press her mouth into a straight line as her jaw set in irritation. “If they ask, tell them I tried, but you’re still a stuck up, lying, badass”
He shook his head as he walked out of the room, the door slamming behind him. Leaving (y/n) confused and angry, punching the bag out of pure frustration. How dare he come in here and try to pry her open like that, guilt her into helping his pack of animals. They could handle this on their own, they have before.
But his words stuck with her hauntingly.
The next day when (y/n) came to school, she practically crashed right into Lydia Martin, who was waiting for her to do just that. The banshee had a knack for predicting things after all.
“Oh, so sorry about that (y/n)” Lydia apologized, resting a gentle hand on the girl’s arm to show her sympathy.
“It’s fine” (y/n) muttered back quickly, already trying to walk away.
“So look, I was thinking,” Lydia continued, her hand on her arm firm and keeping her there with her. “If you could do my friends and I this one, simple, tiny favor?” Her eyes bore into (y/n’s), round and hopeful, trying to come across as pleading.
“I don’t think I owe you any favors” She shot back, yanking her arm away. “Never touch me again”
“Alright, fair, that was rude of me” Lydia apologized again, falling into step with the boxer as she tried to walk away. “Maybe this can be more of an… I owe you situation then?”
“I don’t think so” (y/n) said instantly. “Leave me alone, now” She added, sharply turning a corner to get away.
What was it with these people trying so hard to get her to crack? It wasn’t happening, they could threaten her with her life and she still wouldn’t help them.
After wandering back around the halls towards her class, she’d caught sight of a certain tall boy who’d interrogated her just the other day. And without hesitation she’d grabbed him by the wrist, spinning him around before pinning him against the lockers, arm across his collarbone as she snarled at him. Just her luck, everyone else had scattered, leaving them alone again.
“Get your friends to back the fuck off of me” She muttered up to him. “All of you, even the sweet one, need to leave me the hell alone”
Stiles, though winded from the sudden predicament (y/n) had put him in, managed to smirk down at her.
“Don’t think that’s gonna happen, sweetheart” He taunted, which only fueled her frustration. “See, they’ve come to the consensus that, without you, we’re dying. All of us, Lydia supposes”
“I already told you, I don’t know what you want from me-”
“Oh cut the shit, (y/n), you have no secrets left, we know you’re a hunter” Stiles spat out. “What’s the real reason you aren’t helping? Went back to your natural ways? Simply don’t give a shit about casualties?” She pressed her arm harder against his chest.
“Of course not” She practically growled out. “I don’t owe any of you anything, you don’t get to use me just because it’s convenient for you”
Stiles pushed her off now, catching her by surprise that he even could.
“We aren’t using you, (y/n)!” He hissed. “We’re on the same side here! You don’t want to get killed, and neither do we!”
“Yes you are! Just cause I have weapons and I know how to use them!” She snarked, an accusatory finger pointing up at him. “I’m not some prize to help win a war, I’m not going through that bullshit again. Now leave me alone”
She was going to head to class for certain this time, but was dragged back by Stiles. What was it with these people grabbing her?
“Don’t touch me” She uttered, pulling her arm out of his hold.
“We aren’t using you, (y/n)” He repeated, but kinder this time. “We need you, okay? There’s no way we’re getting through this one without your help. Yeah, you know how to do what you do, and you do it really fucking well, alright? We need that”
(y/n) didn’t say anything at first, just stared at him as she took in his words. She didn’t want to get caught up in another supernatural versus hunter war like she had earlier this year, but Stiles didn’t make it seem like that at all. And he was right, her life was at stake because of her interference with Liam and that stray omega the other night.
“Okay” She eventually hummed.
“Okay? As in okay you’ll do it?” He asked, suddenly ecstatic that he’d gotten her to cave.
“Meet me in the library after school. Tell me everything. I’ll decide then” She told him, before walking off.
She wondered if this was even worth it.
“I told you! I knew she’d cave to you!” Lydia exclaimed with happiness at the lunch table, making Stiles roll his eyes. “Didn’t I say? Didn’t I tell you he’d have the best of luck? And I thought I ruined all chances this morning”
“I’m surprised I didn’t” Stiles said. “Thought she was gonna beat me up or something” He shook his head as he recalled the way she had glared at him when he was pinned to the wall of lockers. “But she agreed to meet after school-”
“That’s great!” Kira chirped.
“-with just me” Stiles finished, causing everyone to share suspicious glances with one another. “I really think that we need to just ease her into the idea of helping if we want her to stick around-”
“This can’t possibly work” Malia cut in. “If she’s only going to talk to you then how the hell is she an ally to the rest of us?” She asked, but no one responded. “Am I wrong?”
“I’ll come with you” Scott decided. “It makes sense that I do, at least maybe she can get used to being around me too”
“I don’t know…” Stiles hesitated. “She’s seriously not good with new people, I’ not kidding I thought I was gonna die-”
“You’re dramatic” Lydia rolled her eyes and waved a dismissive hand. “Let Scott go, you guys can figure out a plan, and then we’ll figure out what to do from there”
Stiles looked to Scott unsurely, but the alpha seemed to agree that it wasn’t a bad idea.
“Fine” He muttered. “But if she backs out, it’s on you”
“What’s he doing here?” Was (y/n’s) immediate reaction when Stiles and Scott sat down across from her at a secluded table in the library. Stiles had turned and given Scott a smug look before answering her.
“He didn’t give me a choice” He sighed. “So, are you in or out?”
“Stiles,” Scott muttered, “It’s not a heist” (y/n) snorted at the comment, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning back comfortably in her chair. If she was being honest, she quite liked the way they were desperate for her help.
“Just a reminder, that your life is at stake here too” Stiles said before she could back out right away. “They’re trying to track down hunters, they just don’t care if a few others get taken out along the way”
“Is that supposed to threaten me?” She asked, quirking a brow. “You think nothing’s tried to already?”
“Well… I guess but-”
“I think I can handle a few omegas” She stated confidently.
“Yeah? Well Liam couldn’t handle the one on his own. You think you’re good enough to?” Stiles snapped, earning a rough pat on the shoulder from Scott to get him to shut up. “What? I’m just saying, you think you’re top notch? Then take care of it yourself”
“Stiles,” Scott hissed, sure that he was about to drive away they’re only hope.
“Alright,” (y/n) shrugged with a grin on her lips. “I’m in”
“See, look what you- wait what?” Scott caught himself as he processed what she’d actually said. “You’re in?”
“Yeah” She nodded, packing up her things.
“Why?” Scott asked. “I mean, if you wanted to help why haven’t you?”
“Because you’re obviously desperate” She said simply. “You’ve all been stalking me for the past two days. And you,” She nodded to Stiles. “You’re an annoying prick, I’d like to see you try to fight a werewolf on your own” She laughed to herself at the idea while Stiles squinted in annoyance.
“Thank you” He uttered out, but she just smiled and winked with a click of her tongue before putting her backpack on to leave.
“I have training to get to” She stated. “Let me know when you’re in dire need of my help”
And with that, she’d taken off out of the library. Leaving Stiles annoyed and Scott relieved.
“She’s great” Scott said, getting his own things together to head home. “I can’t believe she said yes, this is great news”
“Yeah. She’s just wonderful” Stiles responded bitterly.
“Come on, even you have to see the opportunities here. An alliance? Maybe even friendship? Who knows, this is a whole new avenue and I just can’t believe she’s on our side-”
“Alright! I get it” Stiles mumbled the second half and grabbed his bag to leave. “I’ll call you later, I have homework” He grumbled.
Stiles knew that (y/n) (y/l/n) was perfection at it’s finest, he knew there was no way anyone could ever taint her image. But he also knew she was a cocky asshole that was about to use everything against him.
He knew that she knew that he owed her. And he didn’t like owing people. So, he planned to make it up to her before she could ask any insane favors.
Using his detective skills he found her insta handle -from Lydia- he stalked her for a while before coming up with some decent ideas on how to make it up to her.
The following morning he started his plan, by bringing her breakfast. (y/n) spent her morning time in the library, seeing as no one can really bother anybody there. But when Stiles showed up with a bag of a donut and a bagel, along with the same coffee she was certain she’d posted a picture of on her instagram, she was surprised, to say the least.
“What… is this?” She asked, hesitantly taking the items, hoping he wouldn’t sit at the table with her.
“Breakfast, duh” Stiles played dumb, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her.
“Oh… you’re sitting” She sighed quietly to herself.
“Most important meal of the day you know. Wasn’t sure if you liked bagels or donuts so picked one of each”
(y/n) nodded, peeking in the bag and if she was being honest, both sounded great right about now.
“Where’s yours then?” She asked, quirking a brow at his lack of a meal.
“Oh, I ate at home” Stiles said simply.
“As in you ate, went out, bought me breakfast, stalked me to find a coffee-”
“I did not!”
“-and then came into my space- again- to give me the breakfast you creepily bought for me?” Stiles looked like a deer caught in headlights. She stared at him impatiently for his response.
“I mean- I’m trying to be nice, we’re going to friends here on out so-”
“No” (y/n) shook her head. “We aren’t friends, Stiles. You think that you owe me, and you’re trying to make it up with food”
“What-”
“Stiles. You don’t have to do that” She spoke like it irritated her. “In fact, please just repay me by letting me have my peace and quiet back, please” She asked him this carefully, hoping he’d just take the hint and leave her alone unless she was needed. The boy sighed, standing up from his seat.
“Fine” He grumbled. “But my number is on the receipt in the bag. You’ll probably need it for werewolf stuff” She nodded, waiting for him to head off. He hesitated for a moment, but turned to leave.
As soon as she thought she was going to be alone to have this breakfast, he turned back around.
“But you know what- yeah I’m trying to pay off my debt, but you don’t have to shut everyone out of your life just because you’re trying to stay a badass. You can kick ass and still have friends. We do it all the time. So maybe learn to just suck it up, and make friends for the time being?”
She didn’t say anything, just stared at him in surprise with her hands wrapped around the plastic coffee cup.
“I’m tracing their steps tonight with Malia,” He informed her. “If you decide you want to come, you have the number”
And then he left.
She wasn’t exactly sure what that was all about, but enjoyed the breakfast nonetheless. It was kind of sweet after all.
part two coming soon :)

Who Said Death Was Easy? [Death Note] Chapter Thirty-six
Chapter Thirty-six: Rebound
Keiko’s POV:
“Honestly, all this time, I never pictured my stalker as being an old man,” Misa announced rather loudly as she rested her head on the back of the carseat.
“I’m not your stalker, I’m a chief detective with the NPA,” Light’s father said matter-of-factly, and Keiko could hear the slight irritation in his voice from Misa’s accusation.
“What, you’re a detective?!” Misa was saying, “hey wait...I remember now! They arrested me and told me I was under suspicion for being the Second Kira. You mean, that was for real?! No way...there’s no way the police would cover my eyes and bind me up all fetishy like that...gross...”
“I can assure you I’m telling the truth, now please, just keep quiet,” the chief replied, stopping the car in a dimly lit parking garage. He was there to pick up his son, who was being held by Aizawa, Mogi, and Matsuda.
“Are you sure this was the best idea, Ryuzaki-san?” Keiko muttered, cringing a little as the scene continued playing out on the screen before her, “I mean, did you really have to insist on doing this?”
“Light-kun?!” Misa squealed and Keiko sighed. She was still cringing, although this time it was internal.
I see she’s back to being her annoying self...and she called me annoying?! As if...okay, even if I am, I can’t be as bad as her.
“Given the circumstances, this was the best that we could do. It’s not like I was given a lot of time to work...and if I remember correctly, someone here was getting rather impatient about letting Light and Misa out from surveillance,” L replied tartily before popping a strawberry in his mouth.
“I missed you so much!” Misa continued on gushing, and Keiko was sure that the only thing keeping Misa’s hands away from Light was the handcuffs on her wrists. Keiko wasn’t sure how to feel. It was a little weird, seeing someone being so friendly with her ex-boyfriend. It was even weirder when she remembered that Misa still thought that Keiko and Light were still together.
Does this girl have no shame?
“It’s not like I imagined you would go to such great lengths…” Keiko sighed, “I asked you to let them out from their cells, not put them through even more mental torture...this plan is...absurd. If Light is Kira and sees through this plan, it’s not like he’d do anything and risk getting caught. He’s too smart for that. I know you’re counting on Misa slipping up, but even so…this just seems…crazy.”
“Yes, I’m aware of that,” L responded.
As always, I’d love to know what goes on in that head of his...
“I was starting to think that I would never get out of there,” Light was saying on the screen, “but it feels good to finally be cleared.”
“Oh, no, I’m afraid I am taking you to your execution,” the chief replied, earning him two gasps from the back seat, “I wanted to be the one to escort you to the execution site. It was secretly built in an underground facility not far from here…”
“Execution, what the hell are you talking about?!” Light demanded from the backseat.
“L is convinced that you are Kira, Light. And he’s convinced that Misa Amane is your accomplice and the Second Kira. He is convinced that the only way to prevent the murders is to execute the both of you.”
“I-I don’t understand, the killings have already stopped,” Light stuttered out, his eyes wide. He looked entirely innocent to Keiko, and perhaps he actually was.
Even if he isn’t Kira, he still probably cheated on you, Keiko reminded herself. You don’t need to do this to yourself all over again.
“No, they never stopped,” the chief informed his son.
“They never…” Light started, “that’s not what...wait...so he was lying to me?!”
“Oh, wow, a guy lied to you. How original,” Keiko muttered bitterly, watching as her ex-boyfriend stared wide-eyed at his father, “just like you lied to me about Misa…”
“L was trying to get a confession out of you. He would have said anything, however, at this point, that’s not the problem. It’s all political now,” Light’s father was saying. Keiko tuned out his little speech and focused on her ex-boyfriend, Light Yagami.
Sure, she was the one who told, no begged L to let him go. However, was she really emotionally prepared to see him again? Was she really ready to see Misa again as well? L had said that, even though the two wouldn’t be held in cells any longer, that the two of them would still be under constant surveillance. Meaning that the two of them would now be staying at headquarters together.
Somehow the thought of having to live with both her ex-boyfriend and the girl he cheated on her with didn’t seem all that appealing, even if it was all to solve a case. On top of that, Keiko wasn’t ready to see Misa all over her ex-boyfriend, even if she had somewhat moved on.
Add in her kiss with the world’s greatest detective and things really weren’t looking too good. Sure, L told her to forget what had happened between them but Keiko already knew that it wasn’t going to happen. She was still thoroughly confused by everything that had happened between in the last couple of days. How could he compliment her like that and then tell her kissing her was a mistake? How could he act like he cared about her then suddenly change his story only a few seconds later?
Needless to say, Keiko wasn’t all that excited for the things to come.
‘I meant every word I said’...how could he really say that to me? It still doesn’t make any sense, no matter how I look at it. He either cares or he doesn’t. He acts like he doesn’t care all the time, then he says that and kisses me? It was a ‘mistake’, huh? Was it a mistake? Or was he seriously kissing me because he wanted to?
“You really should be paying attention, Kagami-san,” the sound of L’s voice broke Keiko’s train of thought, “it’s getting to the good part now.”
“You mean it’s getting to the worst part of the mental torture,” Keiko corrected, rolling her eyes a moment at the detective, “you know, I might not like Misa or Light very much right now, but even I feel a little sorry to them for what’s about to come.”
“It’s necessary, given the current situation, I’m afraid.”
“Where are we right now?!” Light demanded on the screen. The panic in his voice was rising, “why did you bring us out to the middle of nowhere?!”
“It looks like nobody’s around to see us out here!” Light’s father announced, “I figured that it would be better for us if I brought you two here instead of the execution site...Light, listen to me carefully. I am going to kill you here, and then kill myself!”
Keiko watched as both Light and Misa went into full on panic mode. “What, what are you talking about, dad?! That’s insane!”
“Don’t you even say that!” Misa added, “you’d really kill your only son for L? No way! If you want to die to badly, why don’t you only just kill yourself? If you kill us, you’re really no different than Kira!”
“I am nothing like Kira!” the chief’s voice boomed as he took out his gun and started to point it at Light. “I am bound by my responsibilities as a parent and as the chief of the NPA!”
“Dad, come on, she’s right! Think about it, if we die here, then the truth will never be revealed! Please, dad, you have to let us escape!” Light was yelling now.
“It’s too late for that, unfortunately...either way, you will be executed, son. At least with this, I will be the one to do it,” the chief said, “now Amane-san, I am going to die here with my son, but I have no reason to kill you. It’s only a matter of time before the police locate this car. When that happens, they will transport you to the original site where you will be executed.”
“Light, my son, from one murderer to another...I’ll see you in hell,” the chief’s voice boomed. His gun was now properly aimed, and despite the pleas of both his son and Misa Amane, he fired without hesitation
Although Keiko knew it was only an act, and that the chief had a blank the whole time, she flinched at the sound of the gun. Like she had suspected earlier, all three people in the car were still alive.
“Oh thank god,” she heard Light’s father exhale.
Oh thank god is right...
“Thank god? What’s going on, dad? I don’t understand,” Light responded, the question written all over his face.
“Please forgive me you two,” the chief started, “I know that was hard on you but it was the only way I could get you two out of your confinement. You must understand, I only agreed to do this because I believe you’re innocent, Light.”
“That’s so crazy,” Misa mumbled.
“Were you watching, Ryuzaki-san?” Light’s father asked, looking directly into the camera, “I did exactly as you said, and as you can see, I’m still alive.”
Keiko looked over at the detective, who had narrowed eyes, “yes, yes, it was a convincing performance. If Amane-san were the Second Kira, who only needs a persons face to kill them, then I have no doubt she would have killed you before you had a chance to fire your weapon. Also, if Light was Kira, I am certain he wouldn’t even hesitate to kill his own father to save himself. With Light in particular I cannot rule out the possibility that he might have seen through our little act at some point...as agreed, I will end their confinement immediately. However, as discussed, they will both remain under surveillance until Kira is apprehended. And, Amane-san, although you insist the tapes we found are just occult videos, the physical evidence remains.”
“Hey!” Misa cried, “you still suspect me? That’s not fair!”
“If I were you, I wouldn’t complain,” the chief grumbled, “you get to go back to your normal life. The surveillance shouldn’t even be a threat to you if you’re innocent, just think of it as police protection.”
“Oh, and Light-kun?” L started, “you and I will be together twenty-four seven from now on. I think it’s best we remain that way until we have brought Kira to justice. Anyway, I will see the three of you at headquarters shortly.”
Be together...twenty-four seven? What does he even mean? Keiko wondered. Whatever he means, it doesn’t sound good. It certainly means he still suspects Light. I mean, of course he still isn’t fully in the clear, but twenty-four seven sounds a bit extreme…
“That sounds good, Ryuzaki-san!” Light called out, “I look forward to working with you again.”
/timeskip/
It didn’t take too long for the three of them and the rest of the Task Force to arrive at headquarters. Keiko had to admit, she was feeling pretty apprehensive about the whole situation, but she knew that, in order to move forward in the case, things would have to be rather uncomfortable for a while.
“Ehhh? What’s she doing here?” Misa questioned as soon as she walked in the hotel room. She pointed a bony finger over at Keiko.
Oh great...this is where it starts, Keiko thought, mentally rolling her eyes.
“Kagami-san happens to be a valuable member of the investigation team,” L informed Misa, looking the girl over, “she’s here to help us out with the Kira case.”
A valuable member, eh? Is that another compliment from him?
“Oh great...and here I was hoping I could spend time with Light here without having his girlfriend around,” Misa grumbled. She probably had meant for it to be quiet, but her statement was rather loud, and earned her a glare from Keiko.
“Ex-girlfriend,” Keiko clarified quickly, which caused Misa’s head to snap upwards.
“Ex-girlfriend, what do you mean?” Misa quickly brightened up, grabbing one of Keiko’s hands and pulling her closer towards her. Keiko couldn’t stop herself from groaning as the girl rather roughly pulled on her, it was as though she was attempting to physically get information from her.
Keiko could feel the stares from the other members of the Task Force. She hated the intense scrutiny her situation was getting, especially since she and Light had been broken up for a little while now. It was also quite awkward because Misa was the reason she had broken up with him in the first place, and Keiko wasn’t the kind of person to say that to a person outright. She didn’t want to make the energy in the room any more tense than it already was.
“Yeah, I, uh,” she fished for the right words. “I broke up with him, Misa-chan…”
Misa was about to continue her interrogation when Aizawa’s voice cut through, “alright. Enough of the mindless chatter. We’re here to work on a serious investigation, not gossip!”
Taking her chance, Keiko slipped out of Misa’s death grip.
“Exactly,” Light’s father added. He looked between his son, Misa, and Keiko, “whatever drama there is between you needs to be set aside for the sake of the investigation.”
“I understand,” Light replied, “I promise I’ll do my best for the sake of the investigation. I’m here because I want to help Ryuzaki-san catch Kira…”
“It’s good to have you back,” Matsuda cut in, “I missed having you around, Light-kun!”
“Ah, thank you, I missed you guys, too,” Light rubbed his neck, laughing a little as he turned to look at Keiko, “and I really missed you, Keiko-chan.”
This earned a squeal of despair from Misa, “oh come on! That’s not even fair! I thought you said you two broke up, Keiko-chan! Why does he miss you?!”
“Light-kun,” Keiko started. She ignored Misa, focusing on attempting to respond to her ex-boyfriend, “I...I…”
It’s not like I can talk openly to him here with everyone else around!
Light seemed to understand what Keiko was thinking, so he looked over at L, “Ryuzaki-san, I understand that I’m not entirely clear of suspicion yet, and I’m here to help with the investigation, but would it be rude of me to ask for a moment alone with Kagami-san? With her permission, of course...there are a couple things I wish to talk to her about, and I don’t know if I can work smoothly here with her until I get these topics off my chest…”
“I understand,” L started, “I figured you would say something like that. I’m sure you two have some things you wish to sort out, so it’s fine with me as long as Kagami-san consents.”
“It’s fine with me,” Keiko murmured.
I don’t know if I feel fine...but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about what it might be that Light has to say to me…and after his confinement, I feel like I at least owe him this. It’s not like I really let him talk to me much beforehand...
“Thanks, Keiko-chan,” Light replied, flashing an awkward smile in her direction. It was just enough to make Keiko’s chest start to ache.
“It’s not fine with me!” Misa grumbled, and she attempted to reach out, but Aizawa grabbed her arm, “it’s between the two of them, not you. Goodness, what is this? Why am I the one stuck playing crowd control?”
Keiko winced, sorry, Aizawa-san...
“You two can talk, but please, don’t make it too long. Remember, there’s still work to be done, Light-kun. And Kagami-san, if you would,” L nodded his head at Keiko, motioning for her to open to hand.
Keiko opened her palm, flashing a curious look in the detective’s direction. He dropped a small, black item with a red button in it.
“It’s a beeper,” L clarified. “Just a precaution, in case something happens. If you press it, one of us will be on the way in no time.”
“I, er, thanks, I guess,” Keiko mustered, feeling her cheeks start to flush.
What does he think is going to happen to me? Does he think that Light is Kira and that he’s trying to get rid of me or something? Leave it to L to think of literally everything…
With that, the two of them set off into the hallway outside of the hotel room.
“Where should we go?” Keiko asked. Sure, she had her own hotel room next door but she wasn’t about to invite her ex-boyfriend inside of it. That would just be asking for some trouble, and she didn’t want to have to deal with Misa’s wrath later on.
“How about the roof? We’re almost on the top floor anyways, it’s only a couple flights up,” Light suggested, “besides, it should be empty up there.”
“S-sure,” Keiko let her ex-boyfriend lead the way. The two walked up the stairs in silence. Keiko could feel her apprehension slowly growing with each and every step. It wasn’t because of Light per say, but rather because she wasn’t sure what to expect from him.
He’s not going to tell me he wants to be with Misa now, right? It doesn’t seem like something he’d do, not with the investigation, but then again...it’s not like I expected he would be the type to cheat on me either...
Luckily she wasn’t left alone with her thoughts for too long because soon enough, the two of them reached the roof the hotel. The sun was just starting to set, causing the sky to be a beautiful array of colors.
“It’s nice up here,” Light said after a moment of staring at the sky, “I forgot how nice it was outside.”
“Y-yeah,” Keiko stuttered out, feeling the awkwardness creeping in even more.
What else is there to say? ‘Sorry that you couldn’t go outside the past month because you decided to put yourself under surveillance’?
“It’s nice to see you again,” the sound of Light’s voice once more broke Keiko away from her thoughts. He took a step in Keiko’s direction so that the two of them were now face to face, flashing her a small smile.
It’s not like I can say ‘it’s nice to see you again’ back to him...it feels too awkward with these circumstances...
Keiko could feel her heart beginning to pound, and she fished for something to say in response. However, she came up blank.
“Don’t force yourself,” Light laughed. It was yet another awkward laugh, but he seemed more comfortable than he did back in the hotel room.
“I’m sor-” Keiko started to say, but Light cut her off.
“If anything, I should be the one apologizing, Keiko-chan…” Light started, “you have nothing to be sorry for. I know you watched me when I was under surveillance, but you were only doing what you had to do. So I hope you don’t feel awkward because of that...I just wanted to tell you that I’m so sorry...for everything that happened before I went under surveillance…I’m especially sorry that you had to deal with Misa Amane…”
At the mention of Misa’s name, Keiko could feel herself stiffen a little, something that Light didn’t miss.
Misa Amane, otherwise known as the cause of a lot of the pain I’ve suffered these past couple months...
He let out a soft sigh, “look, please hear me out..I have a lot to say regarding Misa-chan…I know that the evidence isn’t in my favor, and I know you believe that I cheated on you...in fact, you have every reason to believe that. Misa did kiss me, that is true, and I’m sorry that you had to see that. It’s also true that I neglected to tell you about it. However, the only reason I didn’t tell you was because I didn’t want you to worry about her. I didn’t want to hurt you...the truth is, Misa came over to my house quite a few times.”
Quite a few times? Great...
“She wanted me to break up with you because she was in love with me. I refused, and I told her the only way she could spend time with me, if she liked me that badly, was to be friends with you…it was the only thing I could think of because she refused to leave me alone and I didn’t want to stop seeing you because of her. To be quite frank, Misa annoyed me. A lot.”
Well...I’m glad to know it’s not just me who finds her annoying...that is, if he’s really telling me the truth...but, it looks like is...possibly.
Light took a breath to collect his thoughts before continuing on, “it was stupid of me to encourage her to try and befriend you. I knew that she only wanted me, and that she hoped she could get me to break up with you. I just hoped that, if she became friends with you, she could stop disliking you and see how happy the two of us are together. I hoped that, if she saw that, then she would finally leave the two of us alone...however, that day...she knew you were supposed to be out of town, so she quite literally came out of nowhere and tried to kiss me...which was what you saw…and well...all hell broke loose after that.”
He paused, looking at her in desperation, “again, I’m sorry, Keiko-chan. I just thought that you should know the truth, the full truth. I never intentionally cheated on you. I didn’t want her to kiss me.”
Keiko carefully studied her ex-boyfriend, searching his brown eyes for any sort of sign he was lying...however, there was none. From what she could tell, he was, in fact, telling the truth.
Either that, or he’s a damn good liar...but...for some reason, I believe him...it seems he really meant it when he said he didn’t cheat on me. If that’s the case, then that means I suffered all of that heartbreak and broke up with him for no reason…
Keiko bit her lip, thinking back to that fateful day. She had spent hours crying over Light only to find out that he hadn’t really cheated on her.
Was all my suffering really all for nothing?! Am I really the biggest fool of all? No wait...I can’t think like this. Either way, I got hurt...and I shouldn’t just blindly trust him again. Not after all that. He really messed me up...
Light must have sensed where Keiko’s thoughts were going because he continued on, “look. I know I have no right to ask this, but...after hearing the honest truth...do you think you could find it in your heart to forgive me? And…well I know this is very bold of me, Keiko-chan...but, I can’t hold this in any longer. To be blunt, I still care about you. A lot. And I know I’m being selfish right now but-”
“Stop,” Keiko suddenly interrupted. She took a deep breath, “please, Light-kun. Stop for a moment.”
Reliving all of the painful memories she had spent the last month forgetting had caused Keiko’s heart to ache. She swallowed hard. It was like Light was slowly peeling back the band aid she had just finished putting on. No, scratch that, he wasn’t slowly pulling it off, he was ripping it off in one swift motion.
Keiko had attempted to condition herself to think of Light only as a suspect in the Kira investigation. She had tried not to think about him, really think about him for days now. Now here he was, pulling at her heartstrings, making her feel things once again. She wasn’t sure how to label what she was feeling, but she knew, whatever it was, it was a lot.
“Keiko-chan,” Light whispered softly, taking another step forward, “I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry...about everything.”
“Why are you telling me all of this now? Why?” Keiko murmured, looking up at her ex-boyfriend. The two were now within touching distance, all she had to do was reach forward. A part of her was tempted too, but she somehow stood her ground.
“Because...I care about you, Keiko-chan. I had to let you know that. I couldn’t have come back to working with you on the Task Force without telling you all this first. I couldn’t have you thinking that you meant nothing to me this whole time,” Light responded, his brown eyes were round with concern.
Do I even dare believe him?...but those eyes of his, those stupid eyes of his...they make me want to believe him...that, and he always did have a way with words...ugh..no, why am I even doing this?! What is wrong with me? I can’t allow myself to get hurt again! I just...I can’t. Keiko, stand your ground...
“Light Yagami…” Keiko exhaled, emotions swirling around inside her, “you might not have meant to but you hurt me...no...you broke me. I don’t know...I just…it’s just...”
“I know,” Light took a half step forward, “I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now...that’s why I’m so sorry…I messed up everything.”
“You-” Keiko’s voice broke. She could feel the tears threatening to fall, which she fought hard to ignore “why-you-I-”
Dammit...why is he still able to do this to me? I don’t want to cry for him anymore...I don’t want to be a stuttering mess, and yet...
Light reached forward, interrupting her thoughts, and enveloped her in a rather tight hug. All she was able to feel was his warmth, it was taunting her, trying to invite her in once more.
“Why are you doing this to me?” Keiko was finally able to choke out, her head resting on Light’s chest in defeat. She was far too exhausted, both physically and emotionally, to fight back.
“Because,” Light repositioned the two of them so that he was looking down at her, “because...well...I never had the chance to say this before...but…”
“But…?” Keiko echoed quietly, peering up at him.
“I think I love you...no, let me rephrase that...I think I’m in love with you, Keiko Kagami. I just didn’t realize it until I was locked away in surveillance...”
Keiko could feel her heart exploding at his words. She felt her throat go dry, and she found herself speechless.
L-love?! He loves me...no...he’s in love with me?! Did I hear him correctly?!
Before Keiko had a chance to properly process what was going on, Light leaned forward and closed the space between them. His eyes closed and he pressed his lips against hers. Keiko instinctively kissed back for a moment before she thought the better of it.
Wait a second…
Deep down, Keiko knew that she should have been happy. Her ex-boyfriend, the guy she had fallen deeply for, both just apologized and confessed his love to her...and yet...
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong! This all feels so wrong.
Keiko had been waiting for months for Light to make this confession, sweep her off her feet, and kiss her, but something about this just made Keiko feel off.
I can’t deal with this right now, it’s just all too much! I need to get out of here!
It took almost all of her willpower, but she finally was able to push herself away from him. She could see the hurt and the confusion in his eyes, and she winced.
“I-I’m sorry, Light-kun…I...I just can’t do this right now...I need time to...process...” Keiko managed to say, staring at the cemented ground of the roof. She couldn’t bear to look up and look into those sad eyes. There was no way she could risk falling for him again. Keiko just couldn’t do it, not when she was starting to think of someone else in the back of her mind. Someone she felt she was betraying by kissing her ex-boyfriend.
Despite what L had told her, Keiko found that she couldn’t forget what had happened between them.
That and she wasn’t sure if she could ever fully trust Light Yagami again.
L’s POV:
L peered over the corner from his hiding spot on the deck of the roof. He knew he could have just sent Matsuda or Aizawa to report back to him, but there was something he wanted to confirm for himself with his own eyes.
When he saw Light lean forward and envelope Keiko in a tight hug, he knew his hunch from before had been right.
It’s just as I suspected...the first thing Light does after ending his surveillance is try and win Keiko back…I’m certain that he feels he needs to have her on his side as an ally, to keep him safe from me convicting him as Kira.
He ignored the involuntary ache starting to form in his chest when he noticed that Keiko wasn’t doing anything to fight back. L had hoped that she would have at least made him apologize a few more times if she was seriously going to take him back, but he also knew how strong her feelings for Light Yagami were in the past.
If his deductions were right, there was a good chance she would take him back eventually when the two went back to working on the case together. He was also fairly certain that, whatever feelings that she developed for himself were only temporary, which for some reason rather bothered him.
“I think I love you...no, let me rephrase that...I think I’m in love with you, Keiko Kagami. I just didn’t realize it until I was locked away in surveillance...” he heard Light confess to her. L then watched as Light, without any warning, leaned forward, passionately kissing Keiko. While he had expected Keiko to kiss back, seeing the event as it unfolded before him made feel something he had never quite felt before. If his chest had been hurting before, it was on fire now.
I’ve...I’ve seen more than enough...
He turned around, and was about to quietly exit the roof when he heard an unmistakable voice. Keiko’s voice, to be exact. A voice that he could now recognize anywhere.
The detective quickly turned back around, he was more than curious to see the new development.
“I-I’m sorry, Light-kun…I...I just can’t do this right now...I need time to...process...” he heard Keiko choked out, not even looking at Light in the eyes.
Process...hmm? Perhaps…does this mean her feelings for him are not as strong as I thought they were?
L wasn’t quite sure what to make of her reaction. While he wanted to find out what her true feelings were, and whether or not she would really take her ex-boyfriend back, he had to be careful not to let his emotions get the best of him again. However, despite how much he fought it, he kept on wondering if some part of Keiko truly liked him. That he wasn’t just a rebound while she attempted to get over her feelings for Light Yagami. He somehow liked the thought of that.
If so, it’d be the first time someone’s ever truly had a crush on me...

———— THAT’S CORRECT?
L’s words following that feel purely like lip-service; like he’s paying his dividends as though a ( to Light ) fake compliment would make up for the past few weeks of his life. He wishes he could see inside his mind for a moment and understand what about him makes Light’s mind feel like a split dichotomy of positive and negative. As though being able to peel open L’s skull and debate the inner workings of his mind would bring Light to a place where he could nod and smile at that statement and not feel the rising indignation that clenched it’s fist around his heart.
“At least it helped.” Is the small-talk reply he thinks to give, watching L’s vacant actions with a wry smile slung lazily on his lips with no thought put into the way it fits poorly like an ill-tailored suit. His gaze flits over the laptop screen, consuming information idly with no real destination for it in his brain; L’s eyes reflected in the dark portions, L’s fingers hesitating on the keyboard, L.
Light closed his eyes for a moment to think.
( In his sleep, he sees his father; illuminated by church candles standing before an altar manned by no priest - just him, or not really him, with a wide grin showing white and red red eyes standing stark against his pale skin. There’s feathers in his teeth, mottled blood down his suit jacket. They’re speaking, but the plot is lost on him, all he sees from his distant perspective is the way his father raises the pistol in his hand and the way the bullet rips through the space between his eyes, the way they turn inward as his body drops limp.
———— && the way Soichiro points the gun at his own head, turning to face him; You’re killing me, Sae— )
“You really think I’m Kira, don’t you?” Light asks, shaking himself awake. It’s not a question, though; it lacks the pauses or nuances a conversation requiring input had, the upward lilt in his voice is a mere formality that allows him to continue the train of thought that had begun to weigh on him so thoroughly.
The latter is not a question: it is an accusation. “Even after all this, you’re still convinced.”
with his report sent, all that he could do was wait for a response – this was the worst part of a case, really. not being there in person, not being able to interact with the scene, not being able to chase the leads himself. almost wistfully he remembers not many years ago, L the detective in his prime; traveling around without much of a care. hiding his identity only when it was convenient & hardly ever out of fear. fear – what a useless thing it was. it wasn’t really out of fear of course, it was all too logical to keep someone like him locked away like this, protected like this, rotting like this –
L blinks. you really think i’m Kira, don’t you – the laptop screen comes back into focus, L can feel the finger he has pressed against the track-pad once more. staying silent for another moment, the detective attempts to piece together Light’s psyche.
there’s no way I could have figured that out, – that was stupid, – or something, I don’t know, – nothing’s too much for you, right ?
their conversation for the last few minutes flashed before L’s mind’s eye; the evidence pointing to how Light was feeling & in which direction he was thinking stood out like blood on snow. insecure, L realized. uncharacteristically unsure of himself. that wasn’t the Yagami Light L knew, the one L had called his friend. this version, this … wide eyed, shaggy haired, stuttering version was hollow almost. L found it uncanny, the shift that occurred during Light’s incarceration. ever since, the teen had fit a school boy stereotype better than a murderer’s.
but it was that very incident that made Light far more suspicious since. if Light is not currently Kira, he was at least at one point. the evidence spells it clearly – aoyama, misa, raye penbar – it all points back to Light. now, however, L’s not even sure Light’s someone who has a shred of deductive reasoning left, let alone enough to have conducted this all, if this is how he really was underneath Kira’s manifestation ( which would be quite a shame, really, if L had felt akin to Kira rather than Light, if those friendly feelings had been fostered by the murderous soul lurking inside Yagami Light instead of within the teen, himself )
“ yes, ” L confirms, blinking again before turning to meet Light’s eyes. “ make no mistake, Light-kun. i am far more convinced now than i had been, ” he falls silent again, stares down at the mess that was now his napkin tower, lumped in with the rest of his dishes. a thumb presses thoughtfully against his lip. “ the current theory is that, even if Light-kun is not currently Kira, he had certainly been in the past … 7%. ”
