PSA: i keep seeing posts about staying cool in extreme heat that include advice like "gatorade is bad actually!" and "don't drink fruit juice it'll just dehydrate you!" and neither of these are true!

regarding fruit juice: there's apparently a misconception that Any Sugar At All will dehydrate you, and that's simply not true. yes, sugar will make you pee more when consumed in large amounts, but 1) the natural sugar in fruits won't do this to you 2) great news! a lot of fruit juices exist without any added sugar in them! 3) honestly even having a glass of the fruit juice with added sugar won't completely dehydrate you as long as you're also drinking water throughout the day. if its hot you deserve a cold treat of a drink!!! can't go wrong with fruit juice!!!

regarding gatorade: maybe this isn't an every day drink, but guess what: if it's 110F/40C or hotter outside, and you don't have AC, or you're moving around a lot outside of the AC, and you're sweating buckets: that's when you drink a gatorade.

gatorade exists to replenish all the electrolytes (salt) and glucose (sugar) that you sweat out. YES it is meant for athletes to drink during intensive work outs and not necessarily for people who aren't doing that kind of exercise. BUT GUESS WHAT! when you're sweating buckets because you had to walk to the bus in extreme heat, that's intensive exercise. please feel free to drink a gatorade after that! that's its intended use case!!!!

no: neither of these drinks should be a total replacement for water. but drinking a lot of water and then treating yourself to a fruit juice with lunch is a good idea!!! drinking a gatorade becuase you just had to walk for 20 minutes in the heat is a good idea!!!

Cute little rant about Canada.

This country is good, but it's only lucky because we, International Students, make it good. We are a great percentage of their GDP and International schools are the nation's bread and butter despite what they say.

And yet we are treated with less dignity than the residents here.

I don't like how veiled the classism is set in this country. They are, indeed, a bit more equal when it comes to gender, ethnicity and sexual biases. They recognize visible minorities. But the rampant classism and meritocracy of this country is unbelievable. First of all, people are quietly divided on what kind of job they can perform (Capitalistic much?). "Big" office, full time and high paying jobs are only reserved for graduates, even if you have already a successful career in your home country. Because legally speaking, you are only allowed to work part-time.

So part-time workers are the ones sustaining the ecosystem in this country: they are the ones preparing your coffee, serving your sandwiches, cleaning the messes. And while this is not degrading, the fact that they do not receive enough compensation for these jobs, usually dealing with stressful school activities and fighting the language/cultural barrier at the same time, is hard. But we go unnoticed.

Then there is this whole meritocratic idea that everybody starts from the bottom. So, you kind of deserve to be in this position, earning little and suffering these conditions, with little empathy from others. Because even when you could have friends from your own back countries, conditions are changed so the old societal rules that you conformed back at your country are out of the question, and with them out goes the empathy.

I do not understand why they have this grip on the French. I get it, you feel like your identity may be erased when you get all these immigrants that, mind you, are here to service you. But languages do not get "erased": they evolve, they transform, they grow. Do you think you speak the same French dating back to the good ol' days of Victor Hugo and Les Miserables? Tu parles! haha!

But here they are implementing law after law and imposing societal rules that make very little sense and that are grinding down on the people that are keeping you in place. Last year, they implemented a new law that practically eliminated most Colleges in the province, by pretty much impacting the possibility of getting a Post-Graduate Work Permit (the only reason why students engage in such practices) in many Colleges. While the intention was well to eliminate the "Diploma Mills" that popped up during the past few years and to avoid fraud, a new law that is expecting for students to pay SUBSTANTIAL amounts in tuition fees is rolling up. The condition to avoid these fees? Colleges that are offering courses only in French.

That is the most idiotic and stupid idea I've seen, specially considering how GPT technology is already creating concise and clear texts in different languages. It will only take a few years before we can have a full on translating technologies that are organic and easy to use. Then what are they gonna do to get this sense of superiority? Because let's face it, this whole show is about entitlement and enacting their Colonialist superiority.
