i’m behind on my dash but how about prompt 31 for the alex ship of your choice?
They're curled up together. It's late, after a show, and then a late night diner run, and a shower that ended up way longer than it should have because while yes, they especially got an apartment with a shower big enough for three, that did not lead to particularly efficient showering.
Alex is just about to drift to sleep, wrapped around Reggie like he's a teddy bear, when he speaks up.
"Would you still love me if I were a bug?"
Oh no. He knew he should have cut Reggie off after the first coke.
From behind him, Willie shifted, until his chin was hooked over Alex' shoulder. "What kind of bug?"
"Don't encourage him," Alex sighed, even though he knew it was hopeless. "Also, does it matter?" Because yes, even though he knew it would only encourage them both, he couldn't help but ask.
"Like a beetle or something."
"We'd still love you," Willie said, and Alex rolled his eyes, but nodded. "Make you a little beetle house."
"Get you a nice ouija board so you could still communicate," Alex agreed, yawning. Because of course his brain was already figuring out the logistics of what it would take to accommodate their beetle boyfriend.
Below him, he could feel Reggie relax. "Oh. Okay."
"We'll always love you, Reg," Alex said, because he was pretty sure that was what this was about. Though with Reggie, who knew. Boy read too many of those sci-fi paperbacks. "Now go to sleep."
"M'kay," Reggie agreed. They shifted around a little until they were all comfortable again, and Alex sighed, his eyes feeling heavier, his breathing slowing down.
"... would you love me if I was a worm?"
"Reggie, light of my life," he said testily. "Go the fuck to sleep."
Behind him, Willie snickered.
It was going to be a long night.

Day 4 - Couch
Read on AO3
“Eagle one, the package is in hand.”
Lena smiles as Brainy’s voice comes through her ear piece, sounding diligent as always.
“Return to the tower immediately, the golden sleeper is stirring.” Lena tries to mimic Brainy, keeping her tone serious to the mission at hand but it comes out sounding more amused than she means. It's hard not to. Brainy is retrieving a cake like it’s a top secret DEO mission. Nia is somewhere behind her bossing everyone around as they decorate the tower. She can almost see Alex and J'onn exchanging fond looks of exasperation as Nia and Kelly both try to tell them how to straighten the welcome home sign.
The entire energy of the tower has shifted in a few short hours now that Kara is home. Safe and sound and sleeping under a sunlamp one room over, completely oblivious to the chaos.
It keeps Lena distracted right up until the moment Alex walks into the surprise party with Kara leaning heavily on her shoulder. As soon as she lays her eyes on the blonde’s tired smile, there’s nothing left to distract her from the way her chest constricts as she watches Kara embrace Nia. Or how her chin starts to tremble when Kara finally, finally, looks towards her as she steps forward.
Lena’s knees are threatening to buckle when sturdy arms wrap around her waist, her own arms wrapping around Kara’s shoulders to hold her tight.
“It’s only because you’re on the team that I’m here.” Kara whispers, squeezing a little tighter when Lena hiccups quietly as she tries to hold back a sob of relief.
Lena doesn't know how long they hold each other in silent comfort. But when she feels Kara's arms finally loosen it feels too soon to let go. She pulls back reluctantly, hands drifting down Kara’s arms to give her hands a gentle squeeze before she steps away entirely.
She stays a while, simply watching Kara mingle with the super friends from the edge of the party. Mostly to assure herself with her own two eyes that Kara really is safe at home again. The reality of her tumbling through the portal was almost too good to be true after so many days of trying to save Kara that Lena had barely let herself believe it. But she’s letting herself believe it now. She gives herself a moment to bask in it before she tries to slip out of the tower undetected.
“No goodbye?”
Lena glances out of the side of her eye as Kara steps in beside her, looking ahead at the elevator door.
“I didn’t want to interrupt.”
Kara nods before she turns, just barely putting herself between Lena and the elevator she’s waiting for.
“I meant what I said earlier.” Kara pitches quietly, her eyes willing Lena to hear her. “Alex told me everything.”
“I-”
“Come home with me?” Kara wrings her hands together, her voice so quiet that Lena has to strain to hear her over the low hum of the music in the next room. She looks so unlike the confident superhero that Lena’s heart aches. “I really don’t want to be alone right now.”
“Of course.”
A quick text to Alex and Lena finds herself scooped up in Kara’s arms. Her protests land on deaf ears as they lift into the air. Despite Lena’s fear of flying, Lena can feel her stress start to melt away as she sinks into Kara’s embrace. Her jaw slowly relaxes, the muscles protesting as she opens and closes her mouth in a small yawn. By the time Kara flies through her bay windows and sets Lena gently on her feet her muscles no longer have the will to keep going. The soles of her feet feel bruised the moment they touch the ground, making it impossible for Lena to hide a wince as she tries and fails to stand up straight.
Kara must recognize the battle Lena’s going through because she nudges Lena towards her couch and pulls a blanket over her knees.
“I’m just going to go get changed.”
Lena just nods as she runs a hand over the knit material, tugging it down to better cover her feet as she brings her knees to her chest. Leaning her temple against the couch Lena closes her eyes and listens to the sounds of Kara moving around her bedroom, the dull thump of a drawer opening and closing and the rustle of clothing.
“Would you like some tea?” Lena manages to open her eyes as Kara comes around the curtain in a soft sweater and shorts.
“Yes please.” Lena’s voice cracks slightly before she licks dry lips. She tries to shift around so she can watch Kara move around the kitchen, but her eyelids feel so heavy she can barely fight the weight.
The next time she opens them, sunlight is streaming in through a window and she’s staring at a clock that reads 2:00 PM in big red lights with a heavy arm thrown across her waist. Wriggling her hips, Lena manages to roll over so she’s face to face with Kara without waking her. They’re so close Lena can map out every faded freckle scattered across Kara’s nose. She can see the blonde tips and the end of dark lashes fanned across her cheeks, and how her hair is starting to frizz just slightly from rubbing against the pillowcase.
Unable to resist herself, Lena smoothes a hand over Kara’s hair and gently tucks it behind her ear. Her hand resting there as bright blue eyes slowly blink open. They stare at each other for a moment before Lena repeats the motion again, prized with a low hum as Kara snuggles closer. Her nose brushes against Lena’s throat briefly before she settles again. Her breath deepening as Lena continues her ministrations. Her own eyes falling closed again as she lets herself drift back to sleep.

Ski Trip
Summary: when the reader agrees to go on the annual ski trip up to the mountains with her boyfriend, Luke, and her friends she expected to go looking at mountains. But what she ends up doing doesn't require much hiking
Pairings: alive!Luke Patterson x reader
Words: 2.4k
Warnings: THIS IS NSFW FOREPLAY SMUT PEOPLE
If any of you have ever had a conversation with me and you read this fic, no you didn't
...........................................
"What are you two doing tomorrow?" Julie asked you.
You rolled into your stomach and propped your head up in your hands. “I’m not sure, but I know what we're doing next weekend, unfortunately.”
That peaked Julie’s interest, you weren’t usually much of a complainer. “Why unfortunately?” she questioned.
“Because I'm going on the Ski trip with him,” you whined. You wanted to spend time with Luke, you just didn't wanna go on the trip.
“Oh my god, you get to go?” she excitedly asked.
“Not helping,” you commented.
Julie smirked. “Sorry not sorry, I’ve been trying to get you to go for the past two years. And the first year, I couldn’t even go,” she pointed out.
“Yeah, so why would I have gone if you and Flynn weren’t even gonna be there?” you asked. As if on cue, Flynn walked down the stairs.
“Heard you guys were talking about me, all good things I hope?” she spoke as she walked down the stairs.
“Always,” you said, somewhat sarcastically.
She motioned for you to scoot over so she could have some space on the couch.
“So, if we’re done talking about me, did I hear someone say something about the ski trip?” Flynn questioned.
Before you could open your mouth Julie was already telling Flynn about how you were coming on the trip.
“You are?” Flynn squealed.
You tried to not get excited from their joy, but it was impossible; they were contagious.
You shyly smiled. “Yes, I’m going.”
“Yayyy!” Flynn yelled. The girl was practically jumping up and down.
“Oh who are you sharing a room with?” Flynn asked.
“Luke and I are,” you answered.
The girls exchanged a look you knew all too well.
“Shut up!” You covered your face with a pillow.
“We didn’t say anything!” they protested in almost complete unison.
You could feel your cheeks burning up. “Yeah, but you thought it,” you argued.
“Well whether we thought it or said it, you’re sharing a room with your boyyyyyyyfriend,” Flynn sang.
“If you guys start sing teasing me, I will leave,” you threatened.
“Don’t you need us to pick out your outfits?” Julie remembered.
“Oh, shit, yeah.”
“So in other words you have no leverage?” Flynn realized.
“I’m your ride home,” you reminded her.
“Outfits it is, but do not think we will be forgetting about this!” Flynn cried as she walked up to your bedroom.
“Whatever Flynn!” you yelled back.
“She’s right you know,” Julie slyly commented.
You just huffed in response.
The two of them did a very good job at helping maximize your california wardrobe for the mountains. Granted you had to go buy a couple things in advance, but overall, you felt confident that you could bear the cold of the mountains.
“Alright, I think you’ll survive,” Flynn proclaimed.
You closed your suitcase, and surprisingly you didn’t even have to sit on it.
“Thank you guys, I really appreciate it.”
“No problem, it was our pleasure, especially since you’re actually coming this year,” Julie said.
You dropped them both back off their houses and they were nice enough to spare you from embarrassing you in the car ride.
...........
You heard someone creeping up behind you as you grabbed your stuff to head to your second class, and as you felt arms wrap around your waist you knew it was Luke.
You turned to face him. “So I was thinking if we get one of the window rooms then we can see the snow when it falls,” he proposed.
Your face lit up. “Wait, it’s gonna snow when we’re up there?” you excitedly asked.
He happily watched your beaming face “I mean that’s what the weather said.”
“Oh my god! I haven’t seen snow since-” you paused, “actually I don’t remember, but it’s been awhile.”
“Well there’s a good chance that’s gonna happen,” he said.
“You know you’re actually required to show up to school for them to allow you to come right?” you teased. Though originally it had been a legitimate concern.
He licked his lips. “I’ve been coming everyday so I could come on this trip,” he defended himself.
“Coming to school and staying in school are two very different things Patterson,” you playfully reminded him.
He leaned in closer and his voice got quieter. “And what’s that?”
You resisted the urge to swallow and pulled away from him. “One is what I’m doing right now, because I need to go to class.”
He pulled his lips tightly before sighing. “You got me there,” he admitted.
“I always do,” you said, as you started walking off. You turned around to see him still standing there, you would be lying if you said it didn’t bring you joy.
“Go to class Luke!” you yelled back at him.
“You got it!” he saluted you and walked the other way.
You playfully rolled your eyes. That boy would be the death of you, but you supposed there were worse ways to go.
That Friday you didn’t have any school since the school board figured it was pointless to send a bunch of kids to school the day before they went on a ski trip. There wasn’t going to be any actual learning anyway. You usually would’ve spent some of the day at Julie’s; which you did, but today it wasn’t in the studio for practice. You figured since she had helped you pack, you could at least keep her company as she packed.
“So who are you sharing a room with?” you asked her, as she sorted through her jeans.
“Me and Flynn just figured we’d share one,” Julie said offhandedly.
You chose to not comment on how she was obviously forcing herself to be casual.
“Ah I see, do you know if Alex and Reg are coming?”
“Yeah, and get this Alex and Willie are sharing a room,” she gossiped.
“I’m calling it right now, they're gonna start dating by the end of the weekend,” you hypothesized.
“I 100% agree.”
The two of you spent the next hour or so just discussing what sort of things you wanted to do while you were there over the weekend, and of course how much Flynn was running around her house frantically changing outfits. You actually were excited about going, not necessarily about the actual trip, and about dealing with certain classmates, but you were looking forward to being with Luke and hanging out with your friends.
For some reason when you woke up the next morning you were a little nervous, you supposed it was because you had never been skiing or snowboarding for that matter.
You got ready pretty minimally considering you were soon to be on a five hour bus ride. None of your family was up yet so when Luke pulled into your driveway you slipped out the door.
“You got everything?” Luke asked.
“Everything except my chill,” you responded with a smile.
“You’re gonna be alright, and you don’t have to do anything there you don’t wanna do, so if you don’t wanna risk a broken leg, then don’t.”
Despite your anxieties, you knew he was still right.
“Thanks Luke.”
“Anything for you.”
When the two of you got to the bus everyone else in your group had already gotten there. You, the rest of the band, Flynn, and Willie had made a plan for the bus.
“We have arrived,” you announced to your friends as you and Luke took your spots.
“And just in time too, people kept trying to take your seats,” Willie reported.
“Thanks for saving them,” Luke responded.
The two of you continued chatting with the rest of your friends until the bus driver instructed everyone to take their seats. The majority of everyone slept on the way up there but you were too anxious to get there to sleep. Instead you watched youtube as Luke napped on your shoulder.
“Luke, Luuuuuuuuuuuke, Luooooooooooooooke,” you spoke. You were trying to wake him up quietly but you were starting to realize that wasn’t going to work.
Luckily Reggie was awake. “Oh he’s a heavy sleeper, that’s not gonna work.”
Reggie basically got himself so he was dangling off both sides of his chair before yelling in his ear.
Luke awakened with a jolt, looking fairly startled.
You weren’t entirely sure whether you should laugh, throw Reggie under the bus, or maybe both.
“What happened?” Luke asked.
“I woke you up,” Reggie answered innocently.
“By yelling in my ear?” Luke groggily questioned.
Reggie quickly tried to backpedal himself out of this situation. “I mean I don’t think the method is relevant, the important thing is that you’re up.”
Luke wasn’t awake enough to deal with the situation at hand. He just chose to lay his head back on your shoulder.
By the time you had made it to the hotel you were ready to collapse. Luke laughed when you flung yourself onto one the beds.
“Should I be worried?” he asked, mostly as a joke.
“No,” you smiled and rubbed your face, “I’m just really tired.”
“You couldn’t sleep on the bus?” he guessed.
“Yeah,” you groaned.
“You know what would help?” he asked.
“Do tell,” you inquired, from your face down position.
“This,” he said, before he jumped on the bed beside you. He curled his warm body around you and pulled you in.
“Better?” he asked.
“Yes,” you responded. You attempted to melt further into him. You laid there in a comfortable silence for a couple of minutes.
“Luke we should probably go do things,” you suggested. You attempted to get up but he pulled you back down.
You stayed with him but you turned around so you were facing him. “Luke?”
“Yes, y/n?”
You bit your lip, you had to admit, it was pretty cute. “Are you going to let me get up?” you asked.
He looked into your eyes lovingly. “Well if you’re trying to leave then no.”
“So that would be a no.”
“Well if you look at it that way then yeah,” he admitted with a mischievous smile on his face.
“Luke come o-” the rest of your sentence didn’t quite make it out. Your smart boyfriend decided to use your weak spot on your back against you.
“You wanna go now?” he teased.
“Not necessarily,” you lazily responded.
You could feel your willpower fading as the light stokes up and down your back sent a calm wave of chills through your body. But you knew if you didn’t use your chance now there was a good chance you weren’t getting out of that bed today.
“Luke come on we gotta go,” you whined. It’s not like you weren’t enjoying yourself, you most definitely were, but your friends had to be wondering where the two of you were.
“Alright, alright, fine,” he gave in.
“Can I have a kiss though?” he sweetly pleaded.
You gladly agreed, but you realized his plan of not leaving the room hadn’t quite ended when the kiss started leading down to your jaw.
“Luke you’re not sly,” you laughed.
“Oh is that so?” he asked, as he moved down to your jawline.
You nodded your head.
“Then why aren’t you moving?” he purred.
Okay, so he maybe had a point.
“You can tell me to stop,” he reminded you. He looked into your eyes for any sign of you wanting him to stop and waited.
“Unless of course, you don’t want me to stop?” he asked, with the biggest smirk you had ever seen on his face.
“Not necessarily,” you said, completely avoiding his eye contact.
He crawled over top of you, “What was that princess?” he asked.
You forced yourself to look into those beautiful blue eyes, and that devilish smile. “No, I don’t want you to stop Luke.”
“That’s what I needed to hear.” He bent his head down at your jawline, this time starting on the side of your jaw bone. He sucked at the skin and you bit your cheek down on a moan. He moved down from your neck pressing harder and making it harder for you to control yourself.
“Luke,” you moaned.
“Yes?”
“No marks.”
He smirked. “It’s a little late for that one.”
You rolled your eyes at his antics. “You suck.”
“I don’t think you're exactly in the position to be saying those sort of things,” he warned.
You raised your eyebrows. As if he thought you would back down that easily. “Really?”
He licked his lips and shrugged.
“Make me,” you insisted.
“Bad choice of words,” he threatened. In a second his shirt was off and one of his arms held your’s down and above you.
This time he noticed when you swallowed. “Nervous?” he asked, his lips quirked up.
He might’ve been starting to get to you, but you weren’t going to admit to it. “You wish Patterson,” you tested.
His head dipped down towards your collarbone. He lightly sucked on it and gradually increased his intensity until your body unwillingly gave you away and you gutturally moaned.
He jutted his chin out, the fire in his eyes on stage was nothing in comparison to this. “What about now?”
“Yes, Luke,” you groaned out.
He somehow managed to pull your shirt off with you laying down, and managed to unhook your bra with minimal difficulties.
His mouth softly sucked on the very top of your nipple.
“Fuck,” you moaned.
As he continued sucking at a rapid rate you felt the knot in your stomach twisting further, just as you thought it was going to release Luke stopped.
“How much do you want it?” he asked as he slowly pulled your pants down.
You were not going to give him the satisfaction of begging.
You felt a finger glide across your clit ever so slightly and back and forth he kept going, ever so slowly.
A whimper escaped your lips.
“Beg for me, that’s all you have to do,” he promised. He was most definitely enjoying himself.
He moved back up to your nipples but instead he moved as slow as he could, he was trying to break you.
“Come on princess, you know you want it,” he taunted.
A sole finger swiped down your pussy and your breath hitched.
“Luke please,” you moaned.
“What please? I think it has something to do with fucking you silly,” he hinted. He once again crawled over top of you to be able to see your face. Like a predator stalking prey.
“Please rail the shit out of me Luke,” you whined.
“That was all you had to say princess.”

Kara just really really wants to date Lena supercorp au?
“Date me,” Kara says.
“No,” Lena answers calmly.
Kara gasps, blinking fast, shocked by the nonchalant response. Lena merely looks at her tablet, her attention clearly divided. Her best friend sits cross-legged next to her on the couch, sweater and sweatpants and socks on, comfortable and relaxed.
“No? But—Lena, I’m cute and funny.” Kara scrunches her nose and squints at Lena’s tablet screen.
Lena pauses. “That’s true,” she says slowly, and finally looks at Kara. Lifting her hand up, she pushes Kara’s glasses back up on her nose using her index finger. Then, she only just returns her attention back to her tablet.
Alex squints at them from across the room. “Oh, great,” she groans, before standing up and taking her phone out of her pocket. “Where's Kelly?” she mumbles to herself as she leaves the living room, making her way to Lena’s balcony.
“Is that—wait, so is that a yes?”
“It’s a no, Kara. I only agreed with the cute & funny part,” Lena says, distracted.
“Lena.” Kara's mouth opens and closes, eyes blinking fast. “Wow, you don’t let a girl down easy. Sad girl down!”
“Well, get back up,” Lena quips. She strokes Kara’s knee, touch tender.
“I—what—?” Kara stammers, with wild eyes. Falling backwards on the couch, she stares at the ceiling. “I can’t believe you—is this how you usually respond when someone asks you out? So this is what rejection feels like.”
“Trust me, you’ll feel better after eating a plate full of potstickers.”
“Maybe.” Kara bites her bottom lip. Frowning, she sits back up and pokes Lena’s thigh. “But can I ask why not? I have abs, Lena.”
Lena wheezes. A few seconds later, Kara also shakes in silent laughter as well.
“Look,” Kara says, touches her glasses and licks her lips. She’s trying to keep a straight face on. “I’ll play with your hair everyday and give you lots of face kisses if you date me.”
“Well…” Setting the tablet down, Lena pretends to think about it.
Then, the balcony door opens and Alex shows up again, walking in.
Lena shoots Alex a please help me look, but Alex pretends she doesn’t see it as she refills her glass of water. After that, she dashes out of the room so quickly she becomes a blur of red hair and black clothes.
Damn her.
Kara sees Lena’s face and pouts, taking her arms back. Lena whimpers, because the heaters aren’t on and it’s cold right now and Kara’s hands on her waist were keeping her warm, goddamnit.
Lena tries, and fails, to pull Kara’s arms back around her.
“Kara. Those arms, put them back where they came from—”
Kara does as told, and indulges her. “I have decided that this is the last time I’m going to cuddle you. I only cuddle people I date.”
“Lies.”
“It’s true.”
Lena breaks into a smile—or rather a smirk, really. “It’s not. Don’t threaten to deprive me of your warm hugs and cuddles.”
“Oh, Lena.” Kara sighs. “You see, I would pay so much more attention to you if you dated me. Your best friend who has abs. So, maybe date me?”
Lena considers it for a second, then wrinkles her nose. “I don’t think so.”
“Wha—” Kara stutters, offended. “I'll have you know I'm an excellent girlfriend. I'll bring you flowers and chocolate and give you nose kisses. You’re the perfect height to receive nose kisses from me.”
Lena only stares at her, the corners of her mouth twitching into something like a smile.
Then, someone laughs—loud.
They both look up to see Alex on the balcony with a ridiculous goofy smile on her face, phone next to her ear.
“Look at Alex. I want that. Did you know that Alex’s girlfriend takes her on a date every week, each Saturday, and has a special routine? Kelly gives Alex’s face ten kisses every night, all over her face. It’s relationship goals.”
Lena cracks a smile. “Gay.”
Kara nods solemnly. “Gay.”
“Women, huh, Kara.” Lena arches an eyebrow at her.
“Hush, Lena. I’m still coming to terms with it.”
Lena tilts her head, smiling amusedly. “Kara, you’ve been ‘coming to terms with it’ since… well, since you met me. I think you have it figured out by now.”
Kara shrugs. “I mean… I still don’t know for sure, Lena. See, I’ve never dated a woman before—”
“—What on earth are you talking about, you dated Lucy before she left National City—”
“—How do I truly know if I like women if I have never felt the warmth of a woman’s touch? I’ve walked my whole life confused, lost and scared, hidden from showing my true self to anyone—”
“—Kara, Eliza said “I know” when you came out to her—”
Kara sighs deeply, eyes wide. “How do I just know when I don’t even know how to hold a woman’s hand?”
Lena takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. “And I thought I was the dramatic one. Darling, you astound me.”
Kara sighs, sad and dejected. “Lena, what was that quote about tiddies?”
“The what now?”
“From Sappho’s. I think it was something like ‘may you sleep on the breast of your delicate friend’? Yeah, it’s that. Oh to sleep on the breast of my delicate friend.” Kara cries. “That’s what I want, too.”
Lena falls down on Kara’s chest, laughter bubbling inside her chest and trying to squirm away. Kara doesn't let her, instead she just cackles along with her. Lena bites Kara on the neck, who doesn't even flinch, which, what the fuck—instead just shifts Lena back to sitting up and then dramatically sprawls out on her back even more.
“Date me, Lena,” Kara says. “Date me, date me, date me—”
“Kara.” Lena sighs, squeezing Kara’s hand. “I am not going to date you. You would spend more time at the gym than you would with me.” She pokes her abs.
“Oh, no.” Kara sniffs. “But you like and enjoy how strong I am. Don't think I don't notice how flustered you get when I pick you up or hold you in my arms.”
Lena looks faintly pink. “That's none of your business,” she says calmly. “I like muscles, you're not special.” Kara only just now notices Lena’s wrinkled sweater from the earlier actions, and starts smoothing them.
“You look nice. You look really good in my clothes.”
Lena sits still as Kara fixes her up, keeping a poker face even when Kara tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“I look good in everything.”
“But my clothes are simply the best.” Then, Kara gasps. “Yet another reason you should date me.”
Lena sighs, shifting her weight around in Kara’s lap. It’s quiet for a bit, eyes on each other as they listen to Alex talking outside.
Kara takes the opportunity to cup Lena’s face. When Lena doesn’t move, just stays still in Kara’s lap, Kara gives Lena a kiss on the cheek.
Lena pulls back.
“Kara! What was that.” Lena raises an eyebrow, incredulous. Her hands slip under Kara’s shirt, palm on her abs.
“I'm trying to seduce you,” Kara says, trying to keep a straight face, and stops Lena’s wandering hands underneath her shirt.
“It isn't working.”
“Darn.”
Lena nods. “You need to work on your skill.”
“Yes, well… that's not exactly what the last person I had sex with said.”
Lena frowns. “Wait, what? When did you have sex with someone?”
“Hmm. Just yesterday, some woman from a friend’s birthday party. She was lovely. Pretty, too. Why, you jealous?”
Lena scoffs. “No,” she says. Kara pokes her cheek.
“Aw, jealous baby,” Kara coos. “How can you be jealous when you’re not even dating me?”
“I’m not jealous,” Lena insists. “I know what you taste like. I know how you are, and I’m very sure I’m not missing out on much.”
“Oh, really now.” Kara breathes a laugh. “I made you cry the last time we hooked up! You were begging so much—Kara, Kara, please! Kara please, want you to touch me, fuck me now, don’t stop, please, please—”
Lena lets out a strangled noise and quickly quiets Kara, squishing her palm against Kara’s mouth. After a moment, when Kara shows no sign of talking anymore, Lena hesitantly takes her hand off Kara’s mouth.
“So, it’s really a big no on dating me, huh.”
Lena pauses, biting her lip.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Amazing,” Kara whispers. “Lena, are we still pretending it wasn't you that I danced & flirted with at Kelly’s birthday party? I even guided you all the way back to your bed. It's been one whole day since you've last gotten—well, um. You know. Are you okay? How are you surviving?”
“I’m thriving.” Lena breathes out. “I’m living my best life. Been doing some soul searching, too. Finding myself.”
Kara wheezes.
“If you really want to date me,” Lena says, seriously, “you would make me some tea and let me do my work peacefully.”
Kara turns incredulous. “But Lena, I can't move.” She cries. “You’re in my lap, snuggled toasty warm against me and feeling me up. You get up!”
Lena slumps down until Kara’s back hits the couch and Lena’s lying completely on Kara. Kara immediately hugs her with her toned arms.
“No,” Lena says. “I’m cold, warm me up.”
“Ice block human,” Kara whispers. “Date me.”
“No,” Lena says, groaning right into Kara’s ear. She tucks her face into Kara’s neck, her lips touching the skin there. “No, for the last time. I will not date you, Kara Danvers.”
“Golly—that’s not even my full name. How many times can you break a woman's heart today? Aren’t you quite the heartbreaker.”
Lena only makes a muffled sound against her neck.
“No more straps. I’m never giving you some ever again,” Kara decides.
“But I like it when you use the strap. Why not?”
Kara scoffs. “I meant the sour straps. Lollies—my snacks in the cupboards. But since you brought that up, I mean that, too.”
“Wait, are you serious?” Lena pulls herself away, now sitting on Kara’s thighs.
“Dead serious. I’m cute, funny, and I have abs. And as you already know, my strap game is rather incredible. Ask yourself if you deserve the hot package.”
Lena sighs, looking like she’s really considering it. “Kara.”
“I’m a hot item.”
“Come on now, Kara…”
Kara sighs and turns her head to the side, dramatically.
Lena shakes her head. “This doesn’t need to be complicated.”
Kara frowns. “Oh, I see it now. All this time, the only reason why you like me is because of my strap game. I should have known.”
“Oh my god.”
Kara fake sniffs. “No matter, Lena. You’re my favourite person. I still love you, even knowing this.”
Lena mock slaps her on the shoulder, turning it into a gentle hand when it moves up on Kara’s cheek.
“You’re ridiculous, you know that? And pretty, too,” Lena murmurs. Kara takes Lena’s hand off her cheek and presses a kiss to the palm, eyes never leaving Lena’s. Lena’s cheeks darken with colour.
“You’re prettier.”
Lena swallows. “Kara, I—”
“I can’t take this any longer.” Alex opens the door loudly and stomps her way inside. “Can you two stop fucking flirting for one goddamn minute?”
“Alex, I have no idea what you're talking about,” Lena states, blinking. “Kara, darling, could you please remove your hand from my boob?”
Kara gives Lena’s boob a soft squeeze, her other hand cupping bare skin from where she's slipped her hand underneath Lena's sweater.
“I don’t want to.”
“Okay, then.”
“Oh my god,” Alex says, covering her face with her hands. “I want to go home. I need to go—now. I got what I wanted a while ago.”
“Love you, Alex. You are more than welcome to,” Kara tells her. “You’ve been here in Lena’s penthouse long enough.”
“What—you talk as if you haven’t been here all day, too.” Lena frowns.
“It’s the weekend—no work, no other stuff. What’s wrong with spending my free time with my best friend?” Kara says, cupping Lena’s face lovingly.
Lena smiles. “You’re sweet.”
Alex stares at them, horrified. “Wow, it’s like… it’s like listening to highschoolers on a first date!”
“Um, but we aren't dating, Alex,” Kara reminds her sister gently.
“No, no, you're right, Kara. You aren't dating,” Alex agrees, and takes a deep, deep breath. “You're fucking married,” she hisses, wild-eyed. “I was the goddamn maid of honour at your wedding. You live here and you co-parent a cat with Lena. You've been married for like, three years now. Which makes your strange, awful flirting so much worse, Kara Danvers-Luthor!"
Kara and Lena only look at each other, snickering.

you're the one that brings the sun; chapter 1/6
Summary: Alex is prepared for every single variable except, apparently, the one in which his roommate is drop dead gorgeous and Alex is an absolute clusterfuck of a human being who falls for the first pretty boy on he sees on campus.
Willex roommate au!
Warnings: Swearing
Notes: The title is from the song “I Dare You” by the Regrettes. I’ve actually planned this fic out so here’s to hoping I don’t get burned out halfway through. It might end up having 6 or 7 chapters, 5 is kind of just an estimate.
---
When Alex was 11, his mother proudly plastered his report card to the fridge and exclaimed that one day, her little boy would go to Harvard. His father gripped his shoulder with pride and Alex beamed up at his parents like they’d just told him he had superpowers. 3 years later, he was 14 and teetering on the edge of failure in the majority of his classes. He wasn’t stupid by any means, just preoccupied. He’d started a band with his best friends and that felt like the most important thing in the whole world, and high school was new and scary, so it was easier to not pour all his focus into school. His parents’ smiles faltered but they kept up hope, Alex could tell. 2 years later, he stood shaking and crying outside of the Molina’s garage and suddenly, the concept of going to college begun to feel distant and fake. But he’s 18 now, and somehow, miraculously, gazing at the piles of boxes in the back of Ray’s car and swallowing down a lump in his throat.
It sure isn’t Harvard, but a part of Alex feels giddy at the fact that he’s attending a public college that was relatively easy to get into; oh his parents would be rolling in their proverbial graves. What didn’t make him quite so happy though, was the looming fact that he’d be living with some random person, because for some godforsaken reason, the college wouldn’t allow freshmen to choose their roomates. Some bullshit about meeting new people and socializing.
“Hey, ‘Lex. Dude, you’ll be fine.” Luke shakes his shoulders, before swinging one arm around him and the other around Reggie.
“Says the one who isn’t even going to college,” Alex grumbles, slipping from Luke’s grip and into the front seat of the car.
“Yea cause I don’t need it. Not my fault you’re both nerds,” Luke retorts.
“I’m not a nerd, I just like to have insurance-”
“Yea, back-up plan, safety net, heard it a million times. Reggie’s a nerd though.”
“Old news, dude,” Alex says.
“I am not a nerd!” Reggie protests indignantly.
“Tell that to your 2 years of college credit in math.”
Luke nods in agreement. “Nerd.”
“Math is fun!”
“You’re horrible.” Alex makes a mock gagging noise.
Julie comes bounding out of the house, her arms decked with various baked goods. She tosses herself in the backseat beside Reggie and Luke, looking quite pleased with herself at being able to force Luke to sit in the middle. “Tía was apparently up all night baking,” she explains, passing the sweets up to Alex. “Don’t be surprised if she shows up at your dorm with food every day.”
Alex snorts. “I would not object to that.”
Julie sighs, leaning back in her seat. “You guys are so lucky, I’m tired of high school. Damn September birthday,” Julie grumbles. Her birthday is just after the cut off date, so she would be 18 for the majority of senior year, but is just barely too young to be in the same grade as the boys.
Reggie leans over and pats her arm sympathetically, earning an offended squeak from Luke, who’s only pushed further into the back of the seat.
“Don’t worry!” Alex chirps sarcastically. “You get to spend more time with Luke, since he’ll be squatting in your garage!”
“Oh, joy,” Julie deadpans.
“I am not a squatter!” Luke protests, kicking the back of Alex’s seat.
“No kicking! I’m holding food!”
“Y’know Alex, you’ve been staying in the studio for 2 years, you’re not one to talk!” Luke argues.
“I have a job.”
“A stupid job.”
“A stupid job that gets you free coffee.”
Reggie nodds to that, chewing on a cookie. “Can’t risk losing your coffee privileges.”
Julie groans loudly and stuck her head out the window. “DAAAAD! Let’s goooo!” She cries.
“Wow, I didn’t know you wanted to get rid of me so badly,” Alex says, clutching his chest dramatically.
“Oh shut up Lexi, I just wanna meet your’s and Reggie’s new best friends!” Julie says, laughing.
“I’m not gonna be best friends with my roommate.”
“Yea, Alex forgot how to do that!”
“Luke I will smother you in your sleep!”
At this, Ray approaches the car with a raised eyebrow. “No one’s planning a murder, I hope?” He asks, chuckling as he slides into the drivers seat.
“No sir!” Reggie replies, grinning.
“Not yet,” Alex mumbles under his breath.
“Alright boys, who’s ready for college!” Ray says, starting the car.
“I’m gonna be sick.”
---
“And that’s the last of it!” Ray claps a hand over Alex’s shoulder and smiles encouragingly.
Alex nods tensely, gripping the strap of his fannypack tighter.
The dorm’s probably as good as he’s gonna get. One reasonably sized bedroom complete with two horribly uncomfortable beds, a kitchen with a fridge that was in no way large enough to fit even a weeks worth of meals, a tiny living room that would probably fit a couch and a TV at the most, and a bathroom that smelled suspiciously of mustard. Really it isn’t terrible, but Alex has a habit of noticing every little detail, especially the ones that could be a problem at some point. His roommate hasn’t arrived yet, so he’s standing amongst his various boxes, anxiety pulsing in his chest.
Julie grips his hand tightly and smiles, tears pricking the edges of her eyes. “Hey, Alex, you’re gonna be okay.” She squeezes his hand briefly.
Alex nods, exhaling shakily. “Yea, yea I know. It’s just…”
“A change, I know. But this is a good change. And-” she hauls Reggie and Luke over to them. “-we’re all here if you need to call someone and talk. And dad, and Tía, and I bet your roommate will be super cool.”
“Or a serial killer.”
“Just pray he’s not a football player,” Reggie stage-whispers, shuddering.
“God, don’t even suggest that!” Alex whines.
Encouragements and teary hugs are passed along, as well as a promise to meet at the Olive Garden nearby for dinner in a few hours, and then Alex’s posse is off to get Reggie settled, and Alex is left alone in the dorm. Alright.
Alex takes a deep breath, steeling himself, before beginning to wander the dorm. He’s anxious to start unpacking without his roommate and risk doing something that they wouldn’t like. Even choosing a bed feels wrong, he really doesn’t want to get off on the wrong foot with this person. But leaving the dorm meant people everywhere so that was a definite no. He sighs, lowering himself to the wooden floor and pulling out his phone.
“Yea… uh huh. Yes Caleb, I got here fine. No the Uber driver did not try and kidnap me. The boxes- the boxes are not too heavy. Okay. Okay. Yea, bye. Mhm.”
Alex looks up hesitantly upon hearing the voice nearing his dorm. The person standing in the doorway is well… less of a person and more of a large stack of boxes threatening to fall over any second. “Hello?” Alex stands up and makes his way to the boy stood in the entrance.
Said boy pokes his head out from behind his boxes and grins crookedly. “Hi, uh, I’m Willie!” And well, Alex is a goner. He swallows thickly, breath catching in the back of his throat. Willie attempts to adjust the boxes but ultimately fails, sending them tumbling to the ground amongst several muttered curses. “Well… nothing fragile in there,” he falters slightly. “I think.”
“Um…”
“Right! Sorry, uh.” Willie holds his hand out and Alex shakes it tentatively.
“Alex.”
“Alex, cool.” Willie smiles again, his dark eyes twinkling as he does so, smile lines popping out. He brushes his hair -which looks so soft and pretty- behind his ear to reveal a small golden hoop on his right lobe. Alex is dead, actually 100% dead. Because he’d been prepared for every single variable except, apparently, the one in which his roommate is drop dead gorgeous and Alex is an absolute clusterfuck of a human being who falls for the first pretty boy on he sees on campus.
Alex forces out a smile, all too aware that he’s still standing stiff and awkward in front of Willie, his grip on his fannypack tight enough to make his knuckles glow white. Then Willie coughs as some sort of attempt to fill the silence. “Sorry!” Alex squeaks. “Do you need help with the… the uh, boxes?”
“Oh yea, that’d be great!” Willie replies, beaming. “I don’t think there’s anything fragile in there, but y’know, my memory is absolute shit so if I broke some fancy china dishes I didn’t even know I owned, don’t be too shocked.”
Alex laughs anxiously. “Yea uh… I didn’t start unpacking cause I um… I didn’t want to claim a bed and stuff with-without your input?” His voice cracks at the end and he winces because Jesus fucking christ Alex.
Willie chuckles and Alex notes that he has the kind of laugh that echoes through your whole body and settles right in your heart. “ ‘S cool, man, I don’t mind.”
“Right, cool. Do you uh… are you okay if I take the bed farthest from the window? I’m not- not much of a morning person, and the window is… it’s east facing” Alex mutters, his gaze focused on his feet which are rocking back and forth at a rapid pace.
“Yea, of course,” Willie replies. “I don’t think I’ve woken up later than 8 in 5 years.”
“That’s horrific!” Alex cries, momentarily forgetting his anxiety. He steps back and blushes an even deeper red upon realizing how stupid he’s being. “I mean- I just… sorry, I just meant that-”
“You’re good, dude. I don’t bite.”
Alex cracks a tentative smile. “So uh… I’ll just start unpacking then.”
Willie shoots him a thumbs up and smiles once again, which is a thing he apparently does a lot.
An hour later, Alex’s belongings are unpacked and organized and the room feels a bit more his. He feels slightly lighter, exhaling and closing his eyes briefly. This isn’t so bad. Fiddling with the hem of his hoodie, he shuffles out into the living room where Willie is presumably unpacking. Except that he’s not.
Willie is laying upside down on a couch that somehow appeared while Alex was gone and he’s flipping through a tattered magazine while his belongings remain mostly unpacked.
“This quiz says that I should try roller skating,” Willie sniffs. “Some personality test this is- oh hey Alex!” He scrambles up so that he can look Alex in the eyes properly, and points to the magazine in his hand. “Found this in a box, not sure how it got there since I’ve never even subscribed to one of these, but there’s a chocolate chip cookie recipe in here.” He stops for a moment, pondering. “Personally I prefer peanut butter cookies, ooh especially fresh out of the oven. There’s this bakery near my house that-”
“Did you get… any unpacking done?” Alex asks, raising an eyebrow.
Willie looks around at his boxes and laughs sheepishly. “Well I unpacked one and opened 3 so… some, yes.”
“Where’d the couch come from?” Alex pokes the cushion warily, as if afraid that it’s full of bugs.
“Room across the hall,” Willie says, pointing. “They both brought couches and didn’t have room for two we got the one with more stains.”
“Right.” Alex’s reply is forced and tense, and he winces upon realizing. Truthfully, he hadn’t expected his roommate to become so comfortable so fast and he felt like he was several steps behind. Damn extroverts. Drumming his hands against his thighs, Alex slowly sits down on the other side of the couch, pointedly looking ahead instead of at Willie.
“So.” Willie scoots closer, sitting cross legged with his elbows on his thighs and chin resting in his palms. “What’s your major?”
Small talk, god Alex hates small talk. “Um, music,” he answers.
“Ah, that’s cool dude.” Willie nods.
“Uh, what about you?” Alex asks.
“Art,” Willie replies, grinning. “Be prepared for paint stains, like, everywhere.” He chuckles and nudges Alex’s shoulder playfully. Alex is going to implode, he’s sure of it.
Alex laughs awkwardly. “So uh… what’s wrong with rollerskating?”
Willie shoves his shoulder again. “Everything, dude! Well-” he cuts himself off, thinking. “-I just kinda suck at it, definitely better at my skateboard.” He jerks his head in the direction of a skateboard leaned against the wall and Alex wonders how he didn’t notice that.
“Oh, that’s- that’s cool. I rollerblade but I uh, I can’t skateboard to save my life.”
Somehow, they slip into a comfortable rhythm, and Alex notes that his anxiety no longer has him in a chokehold. Willie seems to have that affect; he’s just so… open. Alex doesn’t realize it yet, but he’s subconsciously created a folder in the back of his mind labelled “Willie,” and he doesn’t think he’s capable of forgetting anything Willie will ever say to him.
“- that’s why airplane food is just, horrible. Cause you basically lose like 30% of your tastebuds because of the elevation.” Willie smiles at Alex, gaging his response.
Alex would rather die than admit that he’s still trying to figure out how the topic of airplane food came up, so he just nods enthusiastically, actively stopping his eyes from dancing across Willie’s face, which is practically glowing in the evening sun. Evening. Shit. Alex pulls out his phone frantically. “Shit.” He says it out loud this time.
Willie’s brow furrows in confusion. “You good, dude?”
“Uh yea I’m just, I’m supposed to be meeting my fam- uh my friends for dinner and I have to be there in like 5 minutes.” He ignores the way Willie’s expression falls, convinced he’s just seeing things.
“Yea um, of course. I won’t keep you.” Willie stands up, his posture the stiffest that Alex has seen it in the whole 3 hours they’ve been acquainted for. “I’ll just… order a pizza.”
Alex hesitates in the doorway, weighing his options, which has never been his strong suit. “Do you want to join me?” He blurts impulsively. Willie looks at him in surprise. “I mean only- only if you want of course, we’ve only really uh, known each other for a few hours and you- you probably don’t want to, it was stupid. I’ll just- I’ll just go-”
“No! I’d… I’d like to, eating pizza alone in the dark sounds a little pathetic,” Willie responds.
Alex smiles genuinely. “Ok, ok that’s uh. Cool. That’s cool.”
---
Alex is already regretting this. The restaurant isn’t too crowded, he notices with a relieved breath. But it’s loud. It’s loud and yet only one group of people is talking. Alex doesn’t even need to guess who.
“Ok but- no- no- the whole song would be better!”
“Say banjo one more time, I dare you!”
“Banjo.”
“Julie, what the hell?! This is betrayal!”
“You stole my breadstick, it’s only fair.”
Alex coughs, quieting the table to a dull roar.
“Alex!” Julie pulls him down to sit next to her. “Oh? Who’s this?” Reggie is grinning wickedly and Luke waggles his eyebrows in a way that makes Alex want to shave them off.
“This is uh, my roommate Willie,” Alex responds, his voice raising an octave. “He didn’t have plans so I uh… I invited him, I hope that’s ok.”
“Of course it’s ok!” Julie pats the space on the other side of Alex and Willie sits down, appearing… oddly nervous.
“Congrats! Your Alex’s first new friend since,” Luke taps his chin, pretending to think. “7th grade.”
Alex’s face promptly falls into his hands. He’s seriously considering the whole, shaving Luke’s eyebrows in his sleep thing.
Reggie leans forward conspiratorially. “What’s your opinion on banjos?” He asks, making a point to ignore Luke’s dramatic complaining.
Willie raises his eyebrows, clearly confused. “Um. No comment?”
“I’m… sorry about them,” Alex says apolegetically. “Uh, this is Luke, Reggie, and Julie-” he gestures to each of them; Reggie waves, beaming happily. “-and Julie’s dad should be…” He trails off, looking around.
“He had to take a phone call, something about Carlos refusing to eat dinner until he proves the house is haunted,” Julie explains, clearly biting back a laugh.
“I… okay.” Alex shakes his head. “Are we waiting for more food or did Reggie eat it all?”
“Ha ha,” Reggie punctuates his statement by sticking out his tongue. “We’re waiting for the actual meals-”
“Yea Luke already ate the entire bread basket.” Julie shoots a glare in Luke’s direction.
“Well… you suggested we get hotdogs,” Luke grumbles, crossing his arms over his chest. “Payback.”
“Okay,” Julie laughs.
Willie leans over to whisper loudly to Alex, “What’s the story with the hotdogs?”
“Don’t tell him!” Luke cries, leaning across the table and slamming his palms down.
“We don’t talk of the hot-dogs,” Reggie mutters miserably.
“Food poisoning.” Alex shudders slightly. “Very bad food poisoning.”
“We almost died,” Reggie says, eyes widening. “Like, for real death. I’m pretty sure I was a ghost for a few seconds.”
“Reg, you were not a ghost,” Alex says, speaking like Reggie’s a 10 year old talking about monsters under his bed.
“I was!”
“You were not!”
“So,” Luke smiles mischievously, taking Reggie and Alex’s bickering as an opportunity to apparently torture the latter. Despite Alex’s warning glares, he turns to Willie with an innocent expression. “What kind of music do you like?”
“Luke,” Alex hisses, all too familiar with Luke’s antics.
“Hmmm.” Willie is painfully oblivious to Alex’s panicked expression as he mulls over his answer. “A lot of stuff really.” He shrugs. “Rock, pop, I like those lo-fi playlists when I’m trying to study.”
Luke nods, clearly pleased with the answer, but he isn’t done and Alex wants to hide under the table. He knows what’s coming next. “Thoughts on… drummers?”
“Luke.” Alex is seconds from lunging across the table.
“Drummers?” Willie asks, tilting his head confusedly.
“Yup,” Luke says, popping the p and still smiling like he’s some sort of innocent puppy-dog and not an absolute bastard.
“Hot,” Willie jokes. Alex can’t even hide the way he manages to choke on his own spit, and Luke and Reggie have never been great at subtlety, turning to Alex with matching shit-eating grins. Willie either doesn’t notice or is kind enough not to comment on it. “Yea, pretty sure young Roger Taylor was my gay awakening.”
Reggie is full on giggling now, and Alex’s entire face is gleaming a bright red. Willie glances around the table, puzzled.
“Mhm.” Luke nods before swiftly turning to Alex. “Hey Alex, by the way, you left your drumsticks in the car, do you need them back?” His voice is sickeningly sweet, coated in some sort of poisoned honey. It’s Willie’s turn to choke on nothing, failing to disguise it as a spontaneous coughing fit.
“Fine,” Alex squeaks as he sinks further down in his seat. If he pulls out his phone and messages Luke a flurry of threats, that’s no one’s business. He dares a glance at Willie, who has become quite fascinated with his hands, which are tapping out a mindless rhythm on the table, his cheeks and the tips of his ears dusted red.
Needless to say, Alex makes sure Luke doesn’t even get to look at the next bread basket.

Lena Luthor x reader, Kara Danvers x reader, Alex Danvers x reader. Baby Danvers.
The afternoon came around and the sunlight illuminated the house. Boxes of Christmas decorations were piled in the living room. The soft Frank Ocean music was heard in the background. The smell of chocolate occupied the house.
A few hours after you left, your mom stood in the kitchen. With the phone on her ear as she waited for your sister to pick it up. Her eyes ranked over the entrance of the house, as she remembered how weirdly you were acting.
The hand dribbling in your thigh, the way you didn't talk more of a sentence. Your constant staring at the beach is the same thing you did without knowing as a kid when your father died. The silence as you worked putting the boxes away, was another giveaway since every time you would be doing anything you would hum a song.
The way you awkwardly answered when she asked you about Lena, and you didn't fangirl over her as you always did, even though the two of you were in a relationship. The way your glance painfully glanced at certain places and tears would threaten to come out, as you immediately brushed off.
She knew you enough to tell you were different, and that is why she was calling. She knew one of your sisters would obviously know something about it. The long phone rang a few times before Alex picked up.“Danvers, speaking”
“Hey sweetie, how are you? How is Maggie?” Your mom responded.
The redhead said as she smiled. After a time, their relationship grew stronger. “Hi mom, we're both good, today is our day off, and you?”
Eliza mentioned as she took a sip of her chocolate.“That's great honey, I'm good, your sister came to visit me today”
“Yeah, Kara told me she was going to go since she needs an interview for the girl she is mentoring after New Years'. But I thought she was going on Saturday” Alex responded as she nodded to Maggie to not stop the TV.
“No honey, Y/N. She came to put some boxes away in the storage.” Your mom responded as she put her mug on the kitchen island.
“Ohh I thought she had to work on the pastries for the DEO gala tomorrow and the classes,” Alex said confused. You guys told each other everything, from you having a dumb thought to you accomplishing your dreams.
“No, she didn't mention it. She seemed different to Alex, she just didn't seem as herself” Your mom mentioned.
“What do you mean mom?”Alex said as she sat up on the couch, Maggie stopped the movie and stared in worry at her fiance.
Eliza said “Well she put at least 12 boxes away and she was just not herself, she kept staring at the ocean. And when I mention Lena she just awkwardly answered trying to avoid her”
“That's weird” Alex commented after mouthing to her fiance ‘Y/N’ after Maggie asked what was wrong.
“Yeah, I wanted to ask you if something happened. Because Alex she hasn't been like that since Jeremiah” Your mom said as she glanced outside to see where you sat.
“Nothing has happened that I know of. But I will go check on her. Don't worry okay mom? I will call you later” The redhead responded as she got up.
“Be safe, Sweetie and I love you, say hi to Maggie for me” Your mom concluded as she walked outside to see your drumsticks on the storage.
Your sister said, before ending the call, as she turned to Maggie. “I love you too, okay mom”
Maggie stared at her fiance, as she asked “What's wrong with baby Danvers?”
“Mom said she was different, she said she was acting like when Dad died,” The redhead said with tears. You had felt in a silent depression when Jeremiah died, and it left slowly after a few years.
She had told you when you were born she was going to protect you at all cost, and when Kara entered the Danvers family the blonde did the same. And you as the baby of the family you promised yourself you were going to protect you as they did to you, and you were going to sacrifice everything if it meant for them to be okay and happy.
Maggie knew that the bond between the three of you was strong, and she had witnessed it various of times. When Alex was kidnapped, while she and Kara were fighting you were talking to Alex the whole time, and even offer yourself to change places with the guy’s father confessing to a murder you didn't do.
Or when Kara had solar flares you were helicoptering around her, you would check out what she would eat, or where she was going, everything. And when both of them got into a Life or Death situation with Cadmus you had yelled at them until exhaustion. And cried for the next week clinging to them from waking up to sleeping.
And when you got hurt, Kara and Alex would stop everything just to comfort you. When Barry broke up with you, she, Winn, and James had to stop Kara and Alex from going to beat him up because he broke your heart as he chose Iris over you.
Maggie and Alex were walking down the street, before entering JJ’s, one of your workplaces. The redhead furrowed her eyebrows when she noticed a new girl at the counter doing her job. Maggie noticed Amelia on the register working and signaled Alex to talk directly to the manager.
“Hey Alex, Maggie. How can I help you guys?” The brunette said as she noticed the couple.
Alex responded as she looked around “Hey Am, I'm looking for Y/N, I thought she had an afternoon shift, or is she at the school?”
“She didn't tell you?” Amelia commented surprised.
Alex recountered worried “Tell me what?”
“She was fired from the school two weeks ago since they found a ‘better fitting music teacher’ and well JJ fired her this morning after she slept in here last night” The brunette mentioned.
Maggie and Alex begin surprised and worried about the newfound information. Alex started to think about the trust and abandonment issues you had. Maggie noticed her partner going into deep thought so she decided to take over the conversation.
“Wow, that's weird. Do you know where she might be?” The Latina asked.
Amelia answered as she pointed to a jewelry store at the front of the street.“She had me put some of her checks in Mr. Rogers name, she might be there”
“Thank you, Lia, see you,” The couple said as they nodded. The brunette nodded with a smile and kept working.
The streets in National City had always been busy, cars honking up and down the road, some people would often compare it to New York. The daylight of the afternoon illuminated the streets. The cold air and breeze still accompanied people even when the sunlight was up.
“Good afternoon, to my favorite couple,” The old man said behind the counter with a smile, as Alex and Maggie entered.
Alex responded as she smiled and hugged the man. She had his help to find the perfect ring for Maggie, and now he was making their wedding bands “Hello Mr. Rogers, good afternoon”
“I was going to call you Danvers” The man commented.
Alex responded with a worried glance. “Why?”
“Well, your sister paid for outrageous engagement right, and then she came by this morning saying she didn't want it anymore and that I could donate all the money to the orphanage,” He said as he reclined on the counter, Maggie and Alex sharing a look of surprise.
“She did what?”Alex dropped her jaw in surprise, making Maggie roll her eyes as she softly hit her fiance on the shoulder. Alex came out of her shock, just to speak up almost yelling.
“Yeah a $25 thousand ring, she paid in the last 2 years” Mr. Rogers commented, making your sister and Maggie enter in shock, not being able to say anything.
“Let me get it for you so you can see the piece of art,” The old man said as he laughed going inside the back of the store.
“Did you know she was going to propose?”The couple looked at each other before, asking millions of questions with their glances. Maggie recuperated herself first, before speaking up.
“No, I knew she was in love with Lena but not that she was going to propose” Alex mentioned, as she clenched her jaw.
How could you not tell her?, What other thing were you hiding? Weren't you supposed to tell her about things like this?, Weren't you supposed to trust her with everything?
“Here it is ladies”. Mr. Rogers said as he put in the counter a black box, Breaking Alex out of her thoughts, opening it when the couple came closer.
Both of the women stared at the silver ring. The ring was simple but sophisticated. The diamond was but between a small infinite form. Alex and Maggie exclaimed at the same time. It was small, simple, and perfect for Lena.
“Ohh wow,” Alex said.
Maggie commented “That looks so much like Lena”
The old man said, breaking them out of shock. Giving them 5 envelopes, “Do I still give the money to the orphanage? She also left this for you”
“Yes sir, thank you, I will see you around Mr. Rogers,” Alex responded before sighing as she checked the letters, no daring to open the one with her name. There were five letters in total, with your handwriting. One for Lena, one for Maggie, one for your mom, and the other two for each of your sisters.
The man said with a wave, making the couple smiled.“Bye girls”
After a few minutes, of silence and thinking. Maggie started to think as a Detective recurring every single thing you did. “Okay let's go back and think, She was fired two weeks ago from begin a music teacher which was her primal income, she didn't tell anyone”
“Yes, then last night she slept at the bakery when she had a shared apartment with Lena, her girlfriend. And if they had fought she would have asked Kara or me to spend the night at our apartments.” Alex responded, stopping, seeing her fiance working technique.
Maggie said as pointing out each action. They knew you would often make decisions on feelings but this was out of your league. Leaving is not something you would do, your trust and abandonment issues making sure of that. “Because she slept overnight at the store, JJ fired her today, which she didn't tell anyone, then she canceled her perfect engagement ring order for Lena of 25 thousand dollars and told Mr. Rogers to give the money to the orphanage. Which was at least 2 years of her work”
“Then she gives five letters to Mr. Rogers and asked him to give it to us and then she went to Mom's, with enough boxes to put away all of her things. Acting differently like when my dad died.” Alex said as she finished, taking a big breath, she knew something was wrong and now she didn't know what to do. She was mad at you but she was also scared of everything that has happened, and how haven't break.
“You don't think it has to do anything with Kara don't you?” Your sister said after Maggie and she shared a knowing look. Kara was also in love with Lena, her best friend.
After 2 years of seeing you two together, the blonde had figured out. And she knew the blonde was hurting, when she saw Lena with someone else, better said with you. Alex didn't want to think about the fact that Lena somehow loves Kara too, and that if something happened you would be heartbroken, lost, and more.
She couldn't think like that because she knew you would give up anything so that they could be happy and okay. And if you were hurting, Kara would be hurting too, knowing she hurt you. And she would have to stand at the side, as both of you were hurting because she couldn't do anything.
But why the letters? Why not a text, a call something? Why did you ask someone to give them? There was something that wasn't adding up.
The redhead was pulled out of her thoughts when her phone started to ring again, hoping it would be you. But was greeted with your sister's name on her screen. The redhead shared a look with Maggie before answering the phone.“Kar?”
The line was silent for a few seconds before the blonde blurted out. Making the redhead sighed, there it was.“Yesterday, I told Lena I love her”

Twisted Fate - chapter 27/28
Last time, Gold essentially told Neal that he was his father, and it didn't go all that well. Here's what happened next
[AO3]
-
Belle licked her lips somewhat nervously as she approached the entrance to the park. It was a walk she and Gold had taken before, though not since she had given birth, and it felt strange to be out on her own with Gideon in his stroller. The maple trees were thick with leaves, the air pleasantly warm in the late spring sunshine, and she pushed the stroller at a sedate pace, eyes casting right and left for any sign of her father.
He was waiting for her near the diner entrance, baseball cap twisting in his big hands, his shoulders a little hunched, and she was surprised to feel a sense of relief at his own signs of nervousness. He smiled awkwardly as she approached, cramming the hat back on his head and wiping his hands on his jeans before stomping over to meet her halfway.
“Hey,” she said. “Right on time.”
“Yeah, traffic wasn’t too bad,” he said gruffly.
He hesitated before leaning in to kiss her cheek. Belle put her free arm around him, and he surprised her again with a quick hug before drawing back.
“So, this is the little fella, is it?” he said heartily, peering into the stroller. “He doing okay?”
“Keeping us up at night,” said Belle. “Alex tends to get up to see to him, though.”
Moe’s smile slipped a little at the mention of Gold’s name, but he nodded.
“He’ll soon settle down, I guess,” he said. “Took you a little while to start sleeping through.”
There was a moment of silence, and Belle tried to think of something else to say. Moe lifted a hand to gesture towards the diner and let it fall against his thigh with an awkward slap.
“Uh - shall we go and see about something to eat?” he ventured.
Belle nodded, and he went to hold open the diner door for her to enter with the stroller. By the time they were seated, their coats off and drinks and food ordered, Gideon had woken up and was staring around with bright-eyed interest. Belle struggled to pick him up out of the stroller with her broken arm, and Moe took over, unfastening the straps and scooping him up in the crochet blanket of soft yellow wool.
“Here we go, little man,” said Moe. “You come and sit with Grandad.”
Belle couldn’t help smiling as he bounced Gideon gently in the crook of one arm.
“Seems a sharp little mite,” he said, grinning as Gideon grasped his finger. “Strong grip.”
“I think he might end up with your height,” said Belle. “He’s got long legs.”
“Nice to think he’ll have something from our side, I suppose,” said Moe. “Not got your eyes.”
“Eye colour can change,” she said. “Hair colour, too. But yes, I think he’ll have brown eyes in the end.”
Moe grunted, but didn’t comment further. The waitress brought their drinks: iced tea for Belle and beer for her father, and she stirred the tea with a straw before taking a drink. He sipped at his beer, looking out the window towards the park.
“Looks like a nice neighbourhood,” he observed.
“Yes, it’s lovely.”
“I guess Gold likes his comforts.”
“No reason he shouldn’t, is there?” said Belle, a little stiffly.
He shrugged, and there was a moment of awkward silence. She prayed that he wasn’t going to pick a fight five minutes into their reconciliation.
“So,” said Moe. “This is your life now, is it? You’re staying in Boston?”
“Until I finish my studies, yes,” she said.
“And after that?”
“Well, I need to find a librarian post,” she said. “So we’ll see.”
“Guess you won’t be back to Storybrooke, then.”
“Not unless the library opens up again.”
“Always thought you might work with me in the shop,” he grumbled, and she sighed.
“That was alright to help out and for something to do between my studies, but you know it was never my interest,” she said. “Besides, I don’t have your talent for it.”
“So you’ll be moving elsewhere?” he said. “Maybe to the other end of the country?”
“I don’t know, Dad.” He grunted, and she added: “I’m not thinking that far ahead, to be honest. Let me get my Master’s out of the way and we’ll see.”
He grunted again.
“How’s the shop doing, anyway?” she asked, in a bid to get off the topic of her life plans. Moe grimaced.
“It’s going okay. Lot of work for one person.”
“I told you to get some help.”
“I told you I couldn’t afford it.”
It was on the tip of her tongue to tell him that he could if he cut back on the booze, but Belle let it go.
“And how are you feeling?” she asked. “Last time we spoke you said you were going to see the doctor.”
He rubbed the back of his neck with an awkward hand.
“Haven’t had time.”
“Dad…”
“Don’t fuss, I’m okay!”
Belle bit her lip and took a sip of tea to keep from snapping in frustration.
“What about you?” he asked after a moment. “You feeling okay?”
Belle wrinkled her nose, but nodded.
“I’m okay,” she said. “A little tired, that’s all.”
“You look thin.”
“Yeah, well, looking after a newborn is pretty hectic,” she said. “I don’t know how people cope alone, I really don’t. Having Alex there has been a godsend, really.”
Moe grumbled something under his breath.
“Took him long enough to step up,” he muttered, and Belle’s mouth flattened.
“He didn’t know I was pregnant,” she said coolly. “The moment he did, he turned his life upside down to provide for me and the baby. Do I need to remind you of the level of support I had from you?”
Moe looked uncomfortable.
“I thought we’d moved past that,” he said. “I told you I wasn’t proud of myself.”
“Oh, and while we’re on the subject,” added Belle, voice sharp with her rising irritation. “What did you think you were doing, telling Alex I was engaged to Gaston, of all people?”
His discomfort seemed to grow, and he shifted in his seat as though he would rather be elsewhere.
“I just wanted what was best for you,” he muttered. “Thought it’d make him back off.”
“He couldn’t have backed off any further if he tried,” she said tartly. “Our break-up was pretty extreme, if you recall.”
Moe looked down at Gideon, who was still staring up at him curiously, and sighed.
“Look, I thought I was doing the right thing,” he said awkwardly. “Not like I knew what would happen. I never wanted you mixed up with that man.”
“Well, I did get mixed up with him,” said Belle bluntly. “We’re now in a committed relationship, and he’s the father of your grandson. And of future grandchildren, if I have any say in the matter.”
Moe looked up sharply, mouth open, and the outraged look on his face made her want to giggle, even as she clicked her tongue in exasperation.
“He’s changed,” she said. “He’s not the same person that broke up with me. He’s facing his issues and being honest with me, and with himself.”
“First time for everything.”
“He’s well aware of his failings,” she said sharply. “He wants to make up for what he did. He already is!”
Moe grumbled something incomprehensible, turning the beer glass between his fingers, and Belle wanted to snatch it out of his hand and dump it over his head. She swallowed her anger down and concentrated on trying to make him see sense.
“He’s good to me, and to Gideon,” she went on. “He’s a wonderful father, and I think he’ll be a wonderful partner, too. He’s already made himself indispensable; I honestly don’t know what I’d do without him.”
“It’s a start, I suppose,” said Moe grudgingly.
“Plus,” added Belle, as if he hadn’t spoken. “I love him. I know you two don’t exactly get along, but I’m afraid you’re going to have to learn. Or at least pretend, for Gideon’s sake.”
Moe wrinkled his nose a little, but nodded reluctantly.
“Suppose I can try,” he said ungraciously.
“Suppose that’s all I can ask,” said Belle, in a very dry tone, and sipped at her iced tea.
-
The door had slammed shut when Neal stormed out, and Gold leaned his free hand against it, letting his head drop as he clutched the handle of his cane. For a brief moment he considered going after Neal, but dismissed the idea almost immediately. He would need both time and space to process the idea that - what? That he had a father who wanted him? Who had searched for him? Who had failed to protect him?
The oven beeped cheerfully from the kitchen, announcing that the brownies were done. Gold sighed, pushing back from the door and making his way to the kitchen on feet that felt like lead. His mind was a tangled mess, filled with loud admonitions, heavy, cloying guilt and the biting shards of anxiety. It took all of his concentration to get the brownie pan out of the oven, and he still managed to burn his thumb, dropping the pan of brownies onto the cooling rack with a curse hissed out through gritted teeth. He rushed to run the burned skin under the cold tap, eyeing the pale ghost of his reflection in the kitchen window. He looked sad and drawn, insubstantial, as though a part of him had left the apartment along with his son. His son.
Gold shut off the water, leaning on the sink, shoulders hunching as they began to shake with his weeping. He sucked in air, trying to calm himself, but it was as though a dam had broken inside him, torrents of emotion pouring through to drown him. He lifted a shaking hand to wipe his eyes and burst into fresh tears, leaning on the counter to hold himself up as his legs threatened to give way beneath him.
Somehow he managed to get the cane underneath himself and make his way into the lounge, where he dropped onto the couch and buried his head in his hands, his body wracked with heavy, choking sobs. Bae was alive. Alive and well, and with a son of his own. It was more than he could have hoped for. More than he deserved. It was too much.
-
Belle rolled her shoulders in an attempt to work out the tension as she made her way up the street to the apartment building, the cool of the evening just enough to make her shiver. Gideon dozed in the stroller, oblivious to passing strangers and the steady hum of traffic, and Belle turned to avoid another woman with a stroller, a jogger veering around both of them before carrying on his way at a steady pace.
She had sent Gold a text to let him know that she was on her way back, but he hadn’t responded. Belle hoped that that meant he had been taking a nap; he needed to if he was going to insist on getting up with Gideon every night. What she had told her father about his indispensability was true, and she was aware that the drive and determination that had made him a successful businessman had the potential to break him. He would run himself into the ground trying to care for her and his son if she didn’t remind him to rest.
All things considered, the meeting with her father could have gone a lot worse. He had shown an interest in Gideon, had almost apologised for lying about Gaston, and had seemed, if not exactly enthusiastic about Gold being in her life, at least grudgingly accepting. Over the meal, she had encouraged him to speak further about the flower shop, and life in Storybrooke, and once they were off the topic of her relationship, he was relatively pleasant company. It was a start.
She called a cheerful greeting to Marco as she entered the apartment building, heading for the elevator and letting out a sigh of relief as the doors swished closed and it made its way upwards. The corridor leading to the apartment was silent, and she opened the door, pushing it closed behind her and locking it. A quick peek into the bedroom told her that Gold wasn’t sleeping. The apartment smelled like warm chocolate, and she suspected that he’d been baking something. She shook her head with a fond smile; it seemed she would have to force him to take a break after all.
“Hey!” she called. “I’m back, and I managed not to yell or storm out of the diner, so that’s progress, don’t you think?”
She opened the lounge door, putting her head around it, and Gold glanced up from where he sat on the couch, elbows on knees, his head having been buried in his hands. He had been crying, his face wet with tears, his eyes glistening. She hurried over, falling to her knees on the rug at his feet and putting her hand on his thigh.
“What’s wrong?” she asked anxiously. “What is it?”
“It’s him,” wept Gold. “Neal. It’s him. He’s my son. He’s my boy.”
He began to cry again, his face crumpling, and Belle pushed up on her knees, sliding her free hand over his shoulder and pulling him into a one-armed hug.
“But that’s wonderful!” she said excitedly, sitting back on her heels as her fingers combed through his hair. “How did you find out? Did you talk to him?”
“He came over.” Gold wiped his eyes, dashing away tears. “Dropped off some books for you. They’re in the kitchen.”
“Never mind the books,” said Belle impatiently, and he let out a laugh that was almost a sob.
“That must be the first time you’ve ever said that.”
“What did Neal say?” she persisted. “What did you say?”
“I - I was just talking, really,” he said, his voice still trembling. “About Milah, about Bae. And - and I mentioned Milah’s name, and the name she had given our son, and - and that’s when he knew, I think.”
“So it’s really him?” asked Belle. “It’s really Bae? He must have changed his name.”
“He did.” Gold nodded rapidly. “He changed it. He told me. He - God, Belle, he just left! I told him, and - and he stormed out! I - I don’t know what to do. What do I do? What if he won’t talk to me?”
Belle drew back a little, hand sliding on the smooth wool of his pants.
“I think you should give him some time,” she said gently. “It’s a lot to process. For both of you.”
“Yes.” Gold ducked his head, nodding again. “Yes, I suppose you’re right.”
“He’ll need time and space to think about it,” she added. “And I suppose he’ll want to talk to Emma about it, too.”
Gold nodded, lower lip trembling.
“In the meantime,” she said. “I think you should call Archie, tell him what’s happened.”
“Yes,” he whispered. “Yes. I’ll call him tomorrow.”
“You should keep your Friday appointment,” she added. “Gid and I can drive up with you, and I can go and see Dad.”
Gold sat back a little, a tiny smile on his face.
“Your meeting went well, then?”
Belle pulled a face.
“It went okay,” she said. “I only wanted to smack him around the head a couple of times, so I guess it wasn’t too bad.”
Gold’s mouth twisted wryly, as though he understood her feelings.
“I’m glad it went well enough that you want to see him again, though.”
“Yeah.” She sat back on her heels, chewing her lip. “He was happy to see Gideon, anyway.”
“Good.”
He had dropped his eyes, biting anxiously at his lower lip, and she tilted her head to the side a little.
“Try not to worry that Neal left like that,” she said gently. “It must have been a shock, but you can’t think that means he won’t ever talk to you.”
“I know,” he whispered.
“I know he doesn’t want anything to do with his mother,” she added, “but your part in his early life was very different. You wanted him. That must mean something.”
“Yeah,” he breathed. “But what?”
He glanced up at her, dark eyes wide and anxious and filled with fear, and her heart broke for all the love he had inside him, and all the years he had kept it hidden away and locked up tight to stop it hurting him.
“I don’t know,” she said honestly. “All you can do is be patient with him, and I’m sure he’ll talk to you. I gave Emma your number. Maybe he’ll use it.”
Gold smiled, another tear spilling over and tracking its way down to run over the curve of his lower lip. His hand cupped her cheek, his touch warm, and he leaned forward to touch his forehead to hers, breath sighing out to brush her lips.
“Thank you, Belle,” he whispered. “I already owe you more than I can ever repay, and now you’ve led me back to my son. Thank you.”
She smiled, reaching up to stroke her fingers through his hair as she nuzzled his nose with hers.
“It’s fate,” she whispered. “It wasn’t my doing, it was just meant to be.”
“And without you, I would never have found him,” he said softly. “Thank you, Belle. I love you.”
He kissed her forehead, his lips a soft, wet circle between her eyes, and he lowered his mouth to hers. Belle kissed him gently, lips pulling, tasting the salt of his tears, and Gideon broke into a grumbling cry behind them, making them break the kiss with a soft chuckle.
“I’ll see to him,” she said, and pushed to her feet. “What can I smell, by the way?”
“Oh - brownies,” he said, sitting back and wiping his eyes again. “Can I get you one?”
“Please.” She smiled at him. “Shall we have some tea? And then you and I can curl up and have an early night. I think we both need some sleep.”
Gold returned the smile, and nodded.
“I am in your hands.”
-
Belle leaned on the kitchen counter, listening to the low hiss of the kettle as the water began to heat. Gold had gone to take a shower after putting Gideon to bed, and she was making a cup of chamomile tea for them both, hoping it would help him get some sleep. Her phone buzzed urgently in the pocket of her loose pants, and she fished it out, smiling a little as she saw Emma’s name on the screen. She swiped with her thumb to answer, nudging the kitchen door closed with a foot.
“Hey,” she said. “You okay?”
“Holy shit, Belle!” exclaimed Emma. “What the fuck?”
Belle sighed, leaning back against the worktop.
“I know,” she said.
“This is - I mean this is insane!”
“Tell me about it,” said Belle, with feeling. “How’s Neal coping?”
Emma sighed heavily.
“Still kind of freaking out,” she admitted. “How’s Alex?”
“He stopped crying, so that’s progress.”
“Shit.”
“Yep.”
There was a moment of silence.
“What do we do?” asked Emma. “This is huge.”
“I told Alexander that Neal was gonna need some time to process the idea,” said Belle. “I think they both will. Alex has spent decades looking for him, and to actually find him, not just a random stranger, but one of my best friends… he’s feeling kind of overwhelmed.”
“Overwhelmed is an understatement,” said Emma. “We haven’t said anything to Henry, by the way.”
“Oh, I didn’t expect you would,” said Belle. “I won’t mention it, of course.”
“Thanks.”
Another moment of silence. Belle hesitated before speaking.
“What’s your gut feeling on how this’ll go?” she asked, and heard Emma inhale deeply.
“Honestly? I don’t know right now. It’s brought back a lot of the crap he was dealing with in therapy, so I’m hoping he goes to see his therapist again. I mean he spent a lot of time dealing with his mother abandoning him, but this is a whole new thing.”
“Yeah, Alex is seeing his therapist on Friday.”
“Hey, maybe we could get a discount for multiple referrals.”
Belle chuckled.
“I doubt Neal wants to drive to Maine each week.”
“Guess not.” Emma was silent for a moment. “How are you coping?”
“Saw Dad today,” said Belle. “He managed not to piss me off too much, so that’s progress.”
“Good.”
“Yeah, he seems to want to patch things up,” she said. “I don’t think he and Alex are ever gonna be the best of friends, but I’m hoping we might at least be able to dump the hostility.”
“Knock their heads together if they’re gonna be assholes about it.”
“Yeah.” Belle sighed. “Right now it’s the least of my worries. I need to concentrate on Gideon and - well, and Alexander. He’s been making really good progress at opening up and being honest with me. I don’t want him to start reverting because things get difficult, you know?”
“You should get him to talk about it,” suggested Emma. “Don’t let him sit and brood. I’ll do the same with Neal.”
“Okay. Good idea.”
“Well, I’d better go,” said Emma. “I think that’s him back from the store. Call you tomorrow?”
“Okay. Thanks, Emma, I really appreciate it.”
“Anytime.”
Emma rang off, and Belle slipped the phone into her pocket, hearing the shower shut off. She turned back to the tea, pouring hot water onto bags of dried chamomile flowers and stirring. Emma hadn’t given an outright no to Neal wanting to accept Gold, and that gave her hope for a happy ending. After all their years of loss and pain, they deserved it.
-
The next day dawned dull and cloudy, which suited Gold’s mood. He had checked his phone several times during the night, just in case Neal had sent a message. Nothing. He supposed that wasn’t surprising. Belle had been the one to get up with Gideon in the night, telling him firmly to stay in bed, but sleep had been elusive, and so he found himself making coffee at five-thirty in the morning with grainy eyes and a heavy ball of anxiety in his belly.
He carried the cup of coffee through to the lounge and sat down, staring out through the window as the city came to life. His eyes strayed to the toy rabbit, tucked onto the end of one of Belle’s bookshelves, and after a moment he got up to take it down. Sitting back down, he turned the rabbit between his hands, the familiar feel of soft plush fur against his fingertips. He wondered if Neal would remember it, if he would remember anything of the short time they had had together. Not for the first time, he felt a surge of anger at Milah for taking him away, but his rage burned brief and hot, quenched by a heavy wave of overwhelming sadness for all they had lost. Tears pricked at his eyes, and he blinked them away, shaking his head. What’s done is done.
“You know, you really should rest.”
Belle’s voice made him look around with a sad smile. She was leaning in the doorway, the light from the hallway behind her, but he could see the look of sympathy in her eyes. It only made him want to cry again.
“It’s early,” he said. “Go back to bed.”
“I will if you come with me.”
His smile grew, and he set the rabbit down on the coffee table, propped up against Belle’s book pile.
“Alright,” he said. “But I’m bringing my coffee.”
“Deal.”
Lying down beside her felt good, his tired body sinking into the mattress as her arm went around him, and she pressed a kiss to his shoulder.
“Try to get some sleep,” she said softly. “I can get up to feed Gideon. You need to rest if you’re not gonna fall on your face.”
“I’ll try,” he murmured.
He could already feel his eyes sliding closed, Belle’s warmth and scent a balm to his soul. The coffee grew cold on the nightstand.
-
He woke with a start to find the bed beside him empty. Glancing at the clock he swore under his breath. Ten seventeen? Fuck!
He bounced out of bed, grabbing his robe and pulling it on as he grasped his cane and headed for the kitchen. Belle was making tea, and smiled brightly as he entered.
“Morning sleepyhead,” she teased. “How are you feeling?”
“A little better,” he admitted. “Thank you for letting me sleep.”
“I think you needed it.”
“Yes.”
He had needed it. He certainly felt better, although that underlying fear was still there, creeping beneath his skin.
“How’s Gideon?” he asked. “I didn’t hear a thing. Must have slept like the dead.”
“He was pretty quiet,” she said. “I fed him and changed him - gotta say it’s not that easy with one working arm - and now he’s sleeping.”
“Did you have breakfast?”
“Just tea so far.”
“In that case why don’t I make it?”
He opened the fridge, taking out a pack of bacon and fumbling it in his tiredness. The bacon hit the floor with a slap, and Gold sighed.
“You know what?” announced Belle. “I think it’s a little late for breakfast. What do you say to going out for brunch? We could go to the diner. Eggs Benedict, coffee and cinnamon Danish.”
He smiled, bending to retrieve the bacon.
“That sounds perfect.”
-
By the time they had drunk their tea, and Gold had dressed, Gideon was awake and clamouring for attention. He took over from Belle, changing and dressing him before tucking him into the stroller. He took a seat on the couch while Belle was tying up her hair, one eye on the stroller, and checked his phone for what felt like the hundredth time. His mouth flattened when he saw there were no messages, and when he looked up Belle was watching him with a look of sympathy in her eyes.
“It’s still early days,” she said, and he nodded.
“I know.”
He turned the phone between his hands restlessly, and Belle put her head to the side.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“Fine,” he said automatically.
“Do you not want to go out?” she asked. “It’s okay if you don’t.”
“Of course I do,” he said. “You’re right, I should really eat something.”
“I can live without cinnamon Danish.”
He flashed her a grin.
“Perhaps, but that sounds like a terrible existence.”
Belle giggled, and he slipped the phone into his pocket and pushed to his feet, tugging the cuffs of his jacket straight and grasping his cane.
“Lead on,” he instructed, and she smiled, pushing the stroller towards the door.
“You’ve made the right choice,” she assured him. “I’m sure everything will seem much better after we’ve eaten our own weight in pastries.”
“I’ve no doubt you’re right,” he remarked, still grinning.
“Besides,” she added. “Getting out into the fresh air will do you good. It’s not like staying in the apartment will make a difference, right?”
She pulled open the door, and Neal blinked, fist raised ready to knock. Gold felt his heart leap into his mouth and pound against the back of his throat. He swallowed it down, trying not to let his raging anxiety show on his face.
“Neal!” gasped Belle. “You scared me half to death!”
“Hey,” said Neal, looking uncomfortable. “Sorry. Bad timing, I guess.”
“Not at all,” said Gold, his tone light.
Belle glanced at him, and then at Neal, and beamed.
“Uh - you know what?” she said brightly. “I think I’ll just - uh - I’ll go on ahead and wait in the diner. I could really use a cup of coffee. I’ll see you later.”
She scurried off before Gold had a chance to object, and he raised a hand and ran it through his hair, trying to think of something to say.
“Well,” he said, to fill the silence.
“Yeah.” Neal hunched his shoulders a little. “I - uh - I guess we need to talk.”
“Yes.” Gold hesitated, then stepped back and held open the door. “Please. Come on in.”
Neal seemed to slip past him, shoulders lifted awkwardly and body twisting, as though he wanted to be sure they didn’t touch. It made Gold’s heart sink a little, but he reminded himself that Neal could have avoided him altogether. The fact that he had come over at all was promising. He shut the door behind them, following Neal into the lounge.
“Can I get you something?” he asked. “Coffee?”
Neal shook his head, and Gold gestured to the couch before sitting in his chair, setting his cane to the side. Neal perched on the edge of the couch, threading his fingers together nervously, and Gold was reminded of himself in Dr Hopper’s office. The thought made him want to smile.
“I’m glad you came over,” he said gently.
“Getting news like that isn’t the kind of thing you can just ignore,” said Neal.
“Perhaps not,” agreed Gold. “But even so, I wasn’t sure you’d want to see me again. At least not right away.”
Neal shrugged awkwardly.
“I spoke to Emma,” he said. “And - and I know she didn’t say anything to you about my mother, and she’s the only one who knew her name. So there’s no way you could know unless - unless you knew, right?”
“I suppose not.”
“So I figured we should probably talk.”
“Right.”
Silence, but for the gentle tick of the clock on the lounge wall. Gold threaded his fingers together, in and out, trying to think of something to say that wasn’t trite or just plain desperate.
“I’m sure you must have questions,” he said. “I’ll try to answer them. Whatever you ask me.”
“Okay.”
Gold waited for him to speak, but there was only silence. He bit his tongue to keep from filling it with his own pointless rambling. Neal was looking at the floor between his feet, but after a moment he picked up the toy rabbit on the coffee table, turning it over in his hands.
“That belonged to you,” said Gold, making him look up.
“Yeah, so Belle said. At least - she said it belonged to your son.”
“It’s all I had left,” said Gold quietly. “Milah - your mother took all the pictures. Not sure what became of them.”
“I dunno.” Neal looked uncomfortable. “I don’t have ‘em. Maybe she took them with her. Maybe she threw them away.”
“I hope not.”
Gold thought it was the most likely explanation, but decided against saying so.
“I don’t suppose you remember me,” he added, and Neal wrinkled his nose.
“Sorry.”
“That’s alright. You were very young.”
“I kind of remember this.” Neal held up the rabbit, ears flopping from side to side as he did so. “I mean I don’t have a clear memory of it, or anything, but it seems - familiar.”
Gold smiled wistfully.
“That was your favourite toy.” he said. “When your mother took you, she left it behind. I was frantic. Wondered how you’d sleep without it. I suppose she got you something else.”
“I think there was a bear at some point.” He shook his head. “I don’t know. Like you say, I was very young.”
He ducked his head, and Gold tried again.
“I used to tuck it in bed with you when I read you stories at night,” he said. “You liked to be read to. You liked painting too; I’d put paper down on the kitchen table and you’d make a wonderful mess with the colours.”
Neal said nothing, thumbs stroking the fur on the rabbit’s cheeks. Gold wondered what he was thinking.
“I wouldn’t have been surprised if you’d said you didn’t want anything to do with me, you know,” he said. “I’m sure you blame me for a great many things, and sometimes it’s easier to make a clean break to spare yourself more pain.”
Neal looked up at that, dropping the rabbit back on the table and sitting back a little.
“Like you tried with Belle, you mean?”
His voice was flat, and Gold inclined his head.
“I deserved that,” he said quietly. “Breaking up with Belle was a terrible thing to do. It was one of the worst mistakes I’ve ever made. I was a coward, and I pushed her away. You are clearly far braver than I.”
Neal glanced away, his mouth twisting, but after a moment he looked up.
“Why did my mother leave?” he asked, and Gold let one shoulder rise and fall in a half-shrug.
“She and I were incompatible,” he said simply. “She wanted travel and excitement and lots of attention, and I wanted to provide a stable, secure home for my son. There wasn’t much we could have compromised on, looking back.”
“Guess not.”
“Perhaps it was my fault,” he added. “I knew she was unhappy, but I don’t think I realised the extent of that unhappiness. I never thought that she’d leave and take you with her. Looking back I should have. She was always - restless. Never content. Always chasing whatever she thought was over the horizon.”
“Yeah, I remember that we never stayed in one place long,” said Neal. “One day she’d decide it was time to move on, and we’d take the car and go. I guess maybe it was because she hadn’t paid the rent or something, right? She used to tell me it was an adventure. I don’t even remember going to school all that much.”
Gold shook his head, anger at Milah bubbling up once more after years of simmering beneath the surface. He tried to swallow his rage; Neal didn’t need to see it.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispered. “I should have protected you. I should have made sure she couldn’t take you from me. I - I tried to find you, I swear! I searched everywhere I could think of, followed every lead...”
“Yeah, well, when I got older, I guess I looked for you too,” said Neal, shoulders hunching a little. “Hit a dead end pretty much straight away. How come you weren’t on my birth certificate?”
Gold spread his hands, palms upward.
“Because I didn’t know,” he said simply. “As I said, by the time she saw fit to tell me I had a son, you were eighteen months old, and I was young and stupid and didn’t realise the importance of being formally named as your father. Another mistake I’ve been kicking myself over.”
“Was she with someone else?” asked Neal. “Before she came back to you, I mean.”
Gold pulled a face.
“I presume so,” he said. “She never liked to be alone, it has to be said. When she left I assumed she’d had a better offer.”
“So - so how did you know?” asked Neal, ducking his head a little and looking up through dark lashes. “You said you knew I was your son. How? Maybe she lied to you about that, too.”
“Maybe she did,” admitted Gold. “I can only tell you what I felt in my heart when I held you for the first time. I could feel that you were mine. It’s hard to explain.”
Neal wrinkled his nose, glancing away for a moment.
“No, I kind of get it,” he said. “I felt like that with Henry.”
“But with Henry there was no question that you were his father, was there?”
“No, of course not,” said Neal. “But I still get what you mean. It’s - it’s like there’s a bond there. Instant love, right?”
“Right,” said Gold softly. “That’s it exactly.”
Neal nodded, looking down at his joined fingers and swallowing hard.
“You were really looking for me?” he whispered. “All this time?”
“Ever since I lost you.”
Gold could feel a lump in his throat, tears threatening to well up and spill over once more, but Neal shook his head.
“No!”
He pushed to his feet, hands opening and closing as he paced back and forth, shaking his head. Gold got to his feet, stepping forward and grounding the cane between his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs, and Neal whirled to face him.
“I know how much you hurt Belle, how you forced her out of your life,” he said. “How do I know you won’t do that to me? How do I know you won’t do it to Henry?”
“Please!” Gold could hear the desperation in his voice. “I swear to you, I would never do that!”
“Why not?” demanded Neal. “You did it to Belle. You claim to love her now, but you pushed her away like she was nothing!”
“I pushed Belle away because I was afraid,” said Gold, his voice shaking a little. “It was a terrible, hurtful thing to do, and I regret it every day! But I swear to you, son, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make her happy, and - and being the best father to Gideon. And - and if you let me, I want to be the best father I can to you, too.”
Neal shook his head, pacing back and forth.
“Man, I turned my back on my parents years ago!” he protested. “I thought I was done with this! I’d made up my mind that you either didn’t know or didn’t care and I’d made my peace with it! And now - what? You want to play happy families? You can’t make it right! You can't open the story of my life and go to page 738 and think you know me!”
“I know that,” said Gold gently. “I know. You and I have missed time together that we are never gonna get back, and there’s nothing I can do to make it right. I know that.”
Neal ducked his head, almost as though it hadn’t been what he had expected to hear. Almost as though he had wanted reassurance instead of reality.
“But I want to try to build something,” Gold went on. “I want us to - to have the best relationship we can. I’m well aware that I’ve missed almost the whole of your life, and it kills me, son. I swear that I will do whatever it takes to win your trust and - and be a family.”
Neal was silent, staring at him for a moment, and then he let out a heavy sigh, running his hands over his face.
“I don’t know what you could do,” he said. “I don’t know what anyone does in this situation.”
“No,” admitted Gold. “I don’t think there’s a protocol for this sort of thing.”
“Should maybe ask one of those shows where they find long-lost family members.”
“Oh, believe me, I went on a number of those,” said Gold dryly. “With no photographs of you I knew it was a shot in the dark, but I tried anyway.”
“Wow.” Neal shook his head. “That must have been—”
“Soul-destroying,” Gold supplied quietly. “But it was all I could think of left to try.”
Neal stared at him for a long moment, then let out a mirthless chuckle.
“I guess this makes Gideon Henry’s uncle, huh?” he said. “That’s weird.”
Gold smiled, a little thrown by the abrupt change of subject.
“Yes,” he said. “Would Henry mind, do you think?”
“Probably take it in his stride,” said Neal, with a shrug. “He doesn’t let much faze him.”
“He seems a very bright boy,” said Gold, and he smiled.
“Yeah, he’s amazing” He shifted, toes scuffing the rug a little. “I don’t want him hurt. You get that, right?”
“It’s the last thing I want, believe me,” said Gold sincerely, and Neal nodded.
“Emma and I haven’t said anything to him,” he said. “Figured I’d talk to you first.”
“I understand,” said Gold. “It’s a lot to take in.”
“It’s not just that,” said Neal. “More like - we don’t actually know, do we? I know you think you’re my dad, but from what you say, my mother could have been lying. Guess there’s only one way to know for sure.”
Gold felt himself relax a little further.
“A test, you mean?” he asked. “Yes. I could arrange that, if you’re willing.”
“I’d rather know than not, wouldn’t you?”
“It wouldn’t make any difference to me,” said Gold. “But I can understand why it might to you.”
Neal blinked.
“It wouldn’t?” he asked, looking surprised, and Gold smiled.
“You’ve been my son in my heart from the moment I knew of your existence,” he said calmly. “Test results wouldn’t change that.”
Neal stared at him for a moment, then shook his head.
“You really mean that?” he asked quietly. “You’d really want to be a family with - with someone who isn’t even your kid?”
Gold licked his lips, hands folding over the handle of his cane.
“My father never wanted me,” he said bluntly. “He made it very clear throughout his life that I was nothing but a drain on his time, his money and his spirit. When I lost you, he told me I should count my blessings. That I’d been given a second chance at life, and I should make the most of it.” He shook his head. “Family - true family - it isn’t about blood. It’s about those you choose to be with.”
Neal pressed his hands together in front of his face, almost as though he was praying.
“Emma said that to me once,” he said quietly. “Back when we first got serious.”
“She seems like an extraordinary young woman,” said Gold.
“She’s the best,” said Neal immediately. “Way too good for me. I guess maybe that’s something we have in common, huh?”
Gold let out a soft chuckle. There was a moment of silence, and Neal let his hands drop to his sides, shaking his head a little.
“Papa?” he whispered. “Is it really you?”
Gold’s self-control crumbled, tears spilling over as his lip wobbled uncontrollably.
“Oh God, Bae!” he wept. “Oh God, I’m sorry! I am so, so sorry!”
He reached out, desperate to touch his son, expecting him to recoil, but Neal stepped forward, hesitating only slightly before throwing his arms around him and hugging him tight. Gold wept, clinging to him as he felt a loosening in his chest, a lifting of the heavy weight of grief and guilt. He wasn’t sure how long they stood there, but when Neal drew back he too had tears in his eyes. Gold smiled, trying to steady his trembling lip.
“I guess Belle must be wondering where you are,” said Neal, his voice a little rough with emotion. “This is so weird. It’s almost like she’s my stepmother.”
Gold laughed.
“I’m sure she won’t mind that,” he said.
“You should marry her.”
“Oh, I intend to,” he said. “If she’ll have me.”
“Are you kidding?” Neal shook his head, dashing tears from his cheeks with a thumb. “She’s crazy about you.”
“Then I’m possibly the luckiest man on this earth,” said Gold.
“Something else we have in common.”
They shared a grin, and Gold made a decision.
“Would you come to brunch with us?” he asked. “You could invite Emma and Henry, if you like.”
Neal ran his hands over his face and let out a tearful chuckle.
“What the hell,” he said. “Brunch it is.”

Watching Nia straight up nuzzle Brainy in the premiere sent my soul to a very good place, so if you’re still taking prompts and wanted to maybe write a little bit of fluff involving Nia’s favorite form of affection being nuzzles and forehead touches that would be really sweet.
- Yes, of course! Nuzzling and forehead touches are the best! Thank you for the prompt! x
The last few weeks without Kara had been tough, no question about it.
Nia had been feeling the strain both at CatCo and out on the streets as Dreamer. She’d had to take on not just Kara Danver’s workload, but Supergirl’s as well. Tonight was J’onn and M’gann’s turn to take patrol, which was just as well, because when Nia finally got her key to fit through the apartment door lock, she nearly collapsed through to the other side.
It took her about two seconds to pinpoint Brainy fast asleep on the living room couch.
Despite her own exhaustion, Nia couldn't help but smile at the sight.
There were two kinds of sleep Nia often attributed to her boyfriend. The first kind was the one she was most familiar with - where Brainy was resting more out of obligation than necessity, running numerous background tasks whilst laid at Nia’s side. He'd also made mention that it gave his body a break from the strenuous activities of daily life.
The second kind was rarer - the bone-dead, exhausted kind of sleep reserved for when he’d run himself totally ragged. On occasions like that, Brainy would often deviate from his normal sleep position, his posture relaxing into the bed enough that he might curl on his side, allowing Nia to snuggle up against him or vice versa. Nia liked those times very much, especially with how infrequent they could so often be.
Recently, though, with all the work they’d both been putting into covering for Kara, searching for her signature in the Phantom Zone, they’d hardly had time for sleep at all.
In fact, the last time Nia had seen Brainy asleep like that was weeks ago - the night he’d been rescued from Leviathan’s ship.
Well, at least, it had been, until just now.
She knew that Brainy had been pushing himself more than he cared to admit. Not to say that Nia could say she’d been doing any better. She knew for a fact that Alex and Lena had been working through most nights as well. No one wanted to give up hope, and no one wanted to see what kind of nightmares their minds had in store for them should they try to close their eyes. She didn’t have to be a Dreamer to know that, but hey, it helped.
Every second Brainy wasn’t partnering with Nia for patrol, he was holed up at the Tower, running every calculation under the sun to figure out a way to get Kara back. A human might’ve fallen asleep at their desk, giving themselves at least a few moments of peace, but Brainy wasn’t wired like that. He could keep himself going for days, even weeks if he needed to.
But, that didn’t mean it wasn’t without consequence.
Alex had called Nia earlier that afternoon to let her know that she’d sent Brainy home. After god knows how long without any sleep to his name, his body had finally decided to shut down without his consent. He hadn’t exactly passed out, Alex had said, but when he’d nearly collapsed just trying to stand from his desk, she’d ordered him to go get some rest with zero room for argument.
Maybe she wasn’t technically his superior anymore, but Brainy was far too intelligent not to listen to a worried Alex Danvers.
Still, Nia understood the reason why Brainy was so unwilling to stop working, and she was half expecting to meet him at meltdown mode by the time she got home from work. Although he’d made some progress with Lena, he was still struggling with his emotions, battling between an empty hole in his chest and a slew of untameable negativity threatening to devour him whole. Over the last few weeks, the only thing he’d truly been able to fall back on was his own intellect, fully restored since he’d re-connected to the Big Brain. Not being able to work, to use that intellect towards something, must have felt like losing the last tether he had left.
Which was why Nia was so relieved to see that Brainy had managed to find some semblance of peace. His hands were clasped in a loose triangular formation across his chest, his breath easing out through half parted lips. He’d propped his head up practically with a throw pillow, almost as though he’d set himself up with the intention of continuing his background calculations. But, if the shadows beneath his eyes was any indication, that ship had sailed a long time ago.
He had one leg arched up on the sofa, his linked fingers rising and falling with every gentle heave of his chest.
He looked so peaceful when he slept, so unburdened by everything that had been holding him down. Nia wondered what he might be dreaming about – if he was dreaming anything at all.
She kicked off her shoes, slinging her bag onto the countertop before making her way over to the living room. She stopped short at the sofa’s arm, stood directly over him, Brainy’s face tipped up towards her.
Nia bit her lip, running her finger’s idly along the smooth skin where Brainy’s inhibitors used to be. When Brainy huffed out a soft sigh at the contact, relaxing further into his pillow, she grinned, bending over to press her forehead against his. His face was comfortably warm; Nia relished in the feel of him, closing her eyes.
When she finally lifted her head, she found a pair of sleep-dazed brown eyes watching her curiously.
“Hey, sleepy head,” she murmured, tucking a wayward strand of blond hair behind Brainy’s ear. She glanced to the small space at Brainy’s side, smirking mischievously. “Move over?”
Wordlessly, Brainy obliged, shuffling enough that Nia had the room to sidle into the spot next to him, snuggling up against his shoulder before finding her favourite spot at the crook of his neck. She kissed his throat playfully, grinning when Brainy wrapped his arm around her in response, holding her close.
“What time is it?” Brainy asked around a yawn, his voice thick from disuse.
“Wow, you really are tired, huh?” Nia asked, resting her chin against Brainy’s shoulder. She smiled sympathetically. “Alex told me about what happened.”
Brainy bristled immediately. “Regardless of what she told you, I did not pass out.”
“Maybe not,” Nia reasoned. “But, you exhausted yourself. Everyone needs to take a break, Brainy, it’s nothing to be ashamed about.”
The tension Brainy suddenly carried in his jaw told her he wasn’t going to believe her that easily.
Nia sighed, rolling her eyes. “Besides,” she continued, tucking her hand beneath the hem of Brainy’s shirt. “I need a break, too, and you’re my favourite spot.” She felt along his abdomen, tracing her fingers around the warm protrusion of his life projector. When the tightness in Brainy’s jaw released all at once and he breathed out, closing his eyes, Nia smiled, pressing her face back into the comfort of his throat, snuggling close. She shrugged, closing her eyes. “Guess you’re stuck with me.”
She felt Brainy’s nose brush gently against her hair, a puff of warm breath dancing across her scalp. “I would want to be nowhere else,” he murmured.

I’m Sure - Adam Boqvist Imagine Part 3
Tumblr media
Word count: 4.2K
Part 1
Part 2
Part 4
Part 5
He looks like the perfect mix of Adam and me. But ever since he started growing his blonde hair out, he’s started to look more like Adam. Sometimes when Holden isn’t acting like a grown up and he allows me to cuddle with him and run my hand through his hair, it brings me back to the times I’ve done the same thing with Adam.
I can’t help but feel flashes of guilt in those moments. He’s shown no interest in his father, but I feel the urge to tell him about him. I don’t want him to get hurt by never having a relationship with his father, but I also don’t want to push him to have a relationship with his father just to get hurt. I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Now is one of those rare times when he lets me hold him like I did when he was a baby. I convinced him to watch a movie with me, one of those cheesy Pixar films that I know that he loves. He looks up at me from between my arms, staring up at me with eyes that match my mother’s.
When he was born and opened his eyes for the first time, I was secretly relieved that his eyes didn’t match Adam’s. I just knew it would hurt to have to see a mini-Adam every day. But Holden’s eyes being the same as my mother’s hurt just slightly less than it would if they looked like Adam’s, considering I haven’t talked to my mother in over a decade after a rough childhood. It’s part of the reason that when I decided to keep Holden, I knew I had to go all in and do everything I could to provide for him and give him the best life possible.
“Mom, where did you live before you moved to Colorado?” He questions. Even though he’s lived in Philadelphia most of his life, he’s seen the photos of his toddler self cradled in my arms, the Rocky Mountains decorating the background.
“Chicago,” I answer.
“And why did you move from Chicago?”
My chest tightens at the question, but I shrug nonchalantly. I can’t just say hey kid, I was trying to escape your father. Then he would have more questions and I would put a preconceived idea of his father in his head before he even met him.
“I needed a change in scenery,” I decide on instead. It’s the truth, I did choose to go to Colorado over other states because Alex and Dylan used to show me photos of how beautiful it is.
“And what did you do in Chicago?”
“What is this, twenty questions?” I laugh.
“I’m trying to get to know you,” Holden responds.
“I’m your mother, how are you trying to get to know me?” I tickle him, causing him to giggle. “I worked for the Chicago Blackhawks as a suites advisor.”
“The hockey team?” He furrows his eyebrows. I nod. “Whoa, that’s cool. How the hell did you get that job?”
“Language,” I warn him. “I did an internship with them my senior year of college and got the job offered to me when I graduated.”
“Oh,” he yawns, snuggling closer to me. “That’s sick, mom.”
I laugh, kissing the top of his head. “Yes, it is sick.”
~
I pour the mixed eggs into the pan, waiting for them to sizzle. A wave of nausea suddenly hits me, and I grab onto the edge of the counter, trying to balance myself and swallow the bile that threatens to come up my throat.
I take deep breaths through my nose but that only makes it worse as I smell the scrambled eggs over and over again. I move the pan off of the stove and quickly turn it off, rushing out through the front door to take in gulps of fresh air.
Unfortunately, as soon as I open my mouth, everything that I ate last night comes up.
“Are you okay, honey?” A tender voice calls out.
I look over to see my neighbors, a kind elderly couple, staring at me with concern from their front stoop.
“I’m fine,” I choke out, trying to hide my red cheeks behind my hair. “Probably just the stomach bug that’s been going around.”
They nod, obviously not believing the answer but deciding not to push it. I ignore the little voice in my head telling me that the last time I was this sensitive to the smell of scrambled eggs, an embryo was growing in me.
I enter the house again, seeing Holden planted on the couch in front of the TV. He watches with a questioning expression as I dump the eggs into the trashcan, practically throwing the dirty pan into the sink.
I turn to my son. “New plan, we’re having cereal for breakfast.”
~
“Holden!” I throw his bedroom door open in excitement, totally forgetting our golden rule of privacy.
“Mom,” he exclaims in shock, turning his phone off and flipping it over so the screen is face down on his desk. “Have you ever heard of knocking?”
“Sorry,” I apologize, knowing better. He’s getting to the age of porn and masturbation and that is the last thing that I want to walk in on- having the birds and the bees talk with him was hard enough.
When I found out that I was having a boy and not a girl, that was one thing that I was not looking forward to. And it was just as bad as I thought it was going to be…
“What are you doing home this early?” He glances at the clock.
“Oh, yeah, that’s what I wanted to tell you!” I grin wildly, remembering the reason that I rushed into his bedroom in the first place. “I slept in this morning, like I totally missed my alarm and even when I woke up after ten hours of sleep, I was still exhausted. Anyways, I called work and they told me that it was slow, so I decided to take the whole day off and then I went back to sleep for four hours. When I woke up I went to Target to get some groceries but they have that Starbucks inside and I’ve been meaning to try two different drinks lately and I just decided to try them both and-“”Now you’re completely energized,” he gives me a look of amusement. “Yeah, I can tell.”
“Let’s go out for dinner tonight,” I initiate, “We can go to that cute new restaurant downtown that I meant to try with Winston.”
“Sure, mom,” he rolls his eyes but slowly rises from his bed.
“Oh, and just remember, real sex is never like porn,” I tell him before closing his door behind me.
I can still hear his whine of, “Mom!”
~
“I think I’m going to try the chicken alfredo,” I announce, closing the menu with my order picked out.
“You always get that,” Holden points out.
“And? It’s always good. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it,” I shrug, taking a sip from my cup of Pepsi.
I take a moment to look at my new surroundings. This is the type of restaurant that Winston would love. He loves restaurants that have the brick interior- he always used to say that restaurants that looked like this had the best food.
Maybe I made a mistake breaking up with him. I mean, all he was asking was for me to be honest with him about my feelings. He was trying to do was build a future with me and Holden. Plus, Holden liked him. He’s getting to that age where he might not like all of my boyfriends, shouldn’t I hold onto one that he does like?
“So,” Holden coughs, causing my eyes to snap back to him. He looks uncomfortable, like he doesn’t want to say what he’s about to say or ask what he’s about to ask. “I have to do a project for school on my parents’ lineage. I know all of your stuff, but what about my dad’s?”
I pause, my eyes laser focused on the boy sitting in front of me. He needs to know. But is he asking because he wants to know or because of this school project? Will this school project lead to more questions about his father? I obviously have to tell him the truth, but I wish I would have prepared myself more for this. I could’ve given myself a pep talk in the mirror before having to tell Holden all about his father.
It’s my turn to cough awkwardly. “He’s one hundred percent Swedish.”
“Swedish,” he repeats, nodding. “Okay.”
I freeze. Is that really all he wanted to know? “Do you want a name or something?”
“No,” he shakes his head, drinking from his cup now. “I’m good.”
I nod silently, not knowing what else to say. If he doesn’t want to learn more about his dad, I’m not going to force him. I just hope this project doesn’t bring out some feelings of resentment towards his father or me.
~
I shift on my feet, trying to sooth the searing pain without actually taking my shoes off to give myself a foot massage. But boy, what I would do for a good foot massage right now.
Lia and Rachel giggle to each other and I smile at them fondly, remembering when I was their age and working to be able to my college tuition.
“Lia, I ordered you two more shirts,” I inform the young girl, leaning against the counter to ease the pressure on my feet.
“Thanks, Y/N,” she flashes me a smile. “Hey, what time does the new girl start work today?”
I give her a confused expression. “What new girl?”
“Didn’t Tiffany say anything to you?” Now her expression morphs into one of confusion. “She popped in a couple of days ago and said that she hired another employee and that she was going to start Tuesday, today.”
I fight back the scowl that begs to come out and bite back the nasty words I want to say about the owner. She’s been a shitty owner for as long as I’ve worked here, and this is a good example. A new employee starts today and she’s nowhere in sight.
“She must’ve forgotten to mention it to me,” I settle on saying. I make small talk with the two, catching up on their studies and what they’re doing in their free time. I like to hear about their time in college, it reminds me of all of the all-nighters I used to pull and the times I would leave fraternity houses completely obliterated. Of course, I’m not gonna tell these girls that.
A small girl, younger than Lia and Rachel, appears in front of the counter with a shy look on her face. I recognize the expression as one that the two girls had on their first day here, so I give her a big smile and ask, “Hi! Are you the new employee?”
“Yeah, my name is Marcella,” she introduces herself. I introduce myself to her and usher her behind the counter, giving her an apron with a new nametag on it and show her a couple of things on the machines.
“But I don’t want to overwhelm you on your first day, so you can just observe us today and try it tomorrow, okay?” I request. She nods, a relieved smile on her face. “I’m going to go to the back and grab you some extra shirts that we have until we can order some for you.”
As I shuffle through the boxes in the back, trying to find some that would fit the small girl, I can hear the three talking in the front of the café.
“Is she the owner?” Marcella asks in a hushed tone.
“No, she’s the supervisor, but she might as well be the owner because she does everything the owner should be doing,” Rachel responds. I smile at her answer, glad that someone is seeing the hard work that I put in around here.
“Is she, like, chill?” Marcella questions.
“Oh, she’s very chill. Like you can be on your phone, she doesn’t care, she’s on her phone all of the time too,” Lia says.
“But she’s on her phone because she has a kid,” Rachel points out, “You’re on your phone because you’re Snapchatting the boy that you’ve been talking to for the past four months.”
The three girls giggle with each other as I emerge from the back, two shirts in my hand. My eyes immediately take in Marcella, who’s phone is grasped in her hand now.
That’s not what catches my attention. What catches my attention is her phone case. Tommy Hawk stares back at me with a “miss me?” look on his stupid bird face.
“You a Blackhawks fan?” I try to keep my tone casual as I set the shirts down on the counter next to her, turning to occupy my hands with a spray bottle and a rag.
“Yeah, are you?” She inquires.
I swallow the lump in my throat that appears with the question. Act cool, act casual. She doesn’t know anything about your past, none of the girls do. “No, not really a hockey fan. Just used to live in Chicago and would see the logo everywhere.”
It’s not a lie.
“It is everywhere,” she giggles.
“Well, now you’re going to have to be a Flyers fan,” I give her a smile, hoping she doesn’t see through it to my anxiety.
And when Lia begins to talk about how the guy she’s been talking to is a big Flyers fan, I feel relief flood through my body that I’ve made it through this conversation and into the clear.
~
I’ve been avoiding this for two weeks now. I can’t even remember when Adam and I had sex, but I remember the symptoms from eleven years ago. Swollen feet. Sensitive breasts. Aversions to certain foods- like scrambled eggs. God, I feel like throwing up just at the thought.
But I can’t avoid it forever. I need something to confirm or deny my beliefs. And now, instead of sitting on the shitty toilet in my loft in Chicago, I’m sitting on the toilet that actually works in my condo in Philadelphia.
Time has gone by, but I somehow find myself in this situation yet again. Instead of two tests balancing on the edge of the sink basin, there’s three tests sitting on paper towel on the counter.
I feel less nervous this time than I was when I found out that I was pregnant with Holden. I mean, now I know that I’m a good mom, I’m a good mom to Holden. Sure, I’m not in the best place financially still, but I could find a way to make it work- I did the first time around.
But before I make all of these decisions, I need to find out if I’m even pregnant first.
My phone alarm goes off and I quickly turn it off, taking a deep breath. The nerves start to set in, and I bite my lip in fear.
No matter what happens, I’ll figure it out.
I rise with shaky legs, turning to stand in front of the counter, my eyes meeting the mirror. Slowly, they move down to the three electronic tests.
Positive. Positive. Positive.
Fuck. I run a hand through my hair, lifting my gaze to stare at myself in the mirror. I’m going to be a mom again. I haven’t been a mom to a newborn in twelve years, will I even remember what it’s like to change poppy diapers and make a bottle? I’m older now- not that old- but still, will I want to wake up several times throughout the night to feed an infant?
I mean, at least in Colorado I had a steady boyfriend who willingly shared those shifts with me. Now it’d be me by myself. I’m sure I could get Holden to pitch in every once in a while- shit, Holden.
How the hell am I supposed to tell my twelve-year-old son that I’m knocked up? It’s embarrassing enough to be in middle school, but to have your mom be pregnant will make it all the more humiliating. And the age gap is going to be thirteen years, they’ll have nothing in common with each other. What the hell am I supposed to tell him when he asks me who the father is?
Guess what, kiddo? You two have the same biological father! “Mom,” the kid in question calls out from the other side of the bathroom door.
“Uh, just a minute, buddy,” I stutter, quickly shoving the tests into one of the cabinet drawers, burying it under some pads. He doesn’t go in my master bathroom in the first place, but if he did, I wouldn’t want him to find out about the pregnancy before I could tell him myself.
I throw the paper towel into the trash can and open the door breathlessly, the blonde on the other side of the door giving me a questioning look.
“Uh, you okay, mom?”
“I’m fine,” I answer, exiting the bathroom and plopping down on my bed, patting the spot next to me for him to take a seat. He does. “What’s up?”
“I want to ask you something,” he begins, picking at his overgrown fingernails. It’s his nervous habit, I’ve picked up on it over the past twelve years but haven’t said anything about it. I don’t want him to know that I realize it because then he can hide his emotions from me.
“Okay,” I nod encouraging.
“There’s this programming camp this summer, in Chicago, that I’d like to go to,” he stutters through.
My heart races at the thought of my baby boy in Chicago by himself. He’s grown up a lot in the past couples of months and I know that he’ll grow in the time that he has before he goes to the camp, but I can’t help but feel anxious at the thought of my son with no one to watch him in a big city like Chicago.
“It’s in June, and it’s only for two weeks,” he continues quickly.
“Honey... that’s in a month and a half,” I point out, “It’s kind of last minute to be bringing this up to me, don’t you think?”
“I know, mom, but I didn’t think I wanted to do it and I started thinking about it more and then I realized I really want to do it,” he pleads.
“I didn’t realize you were really into computer programming,” I state softly. If I don’t know about something that my son is so clearly passionate about, am I really that good of a mother?
“Yeah, well, it’s a, um, recent development.”
I nod. “Okay. We’ll sign you up for this camp tonight and then we’ll start getting you ready.”
“Thanks, mom!” He launches himself into my arms and I giggle with surprise, not ready for the sudden action. Nonetheless, I hug him back, cherishing the feeling of my older child in my arms.
“I love you, Holden.”
“I love you, too, mom.”
~
Later that night I lay in bed, darkness filling my room. As soon as Holden left my room earlier to play video games, I pulled out my phone, scheduling an appointment with my doctor to confirm the pregnancy and see how far along I am.
I reach over for my phone, opening Instagram. Adam’s follow request still sits there, untouched. It’s been weeks now, so I doubt that he remembers that he even sent it. Hell, I don’t even post that often, so if I confirmed it, he would barely be able to tell that he’s following me.
But do I confirm it for my son and our future, second child together? Do I message him and tell him that I’m 99% sure that he’s going to be a dad again?
I mean, his track record so far tells me that I shouldn’t do that. He doubted paternity when I told him that I was pregnant with Holden and basically told me to get rid of the baby. He didn’t bother to contact me for thirteen years, and when we did come into contact again, accidentally, he didn’t mention Holden at all or ask about him.
That tells me he’s still not ready to become a parent. It’s been over a decade and he hasn’t come to terms that he’s a dad and that he needs to step up and be there for his child- or children, now.
And I may be a bitch, but I don’t want to give him a chance to hurt this second baby. Even though Holden’s never shown any interest in getting to know Adam, what if this second child does?
What if this baby reaches out to Adam just to get told “sorry, I don’t want you and I never did.” I can’t imagine how much my heart would break for my child if that were to happen. So, with pain radiating in my heart, I decline Adam’s follow request. I’ve gone through one pregnancy without him, I can go through another.
~
Day by day, it’s getting harder to hide my pregnancy from Holden. I wanted to wait as long as I could, or at least until twelve weeks when I know it’s less likely to lose the baby, to tell him that I’m pregnant. I was eight weeks along when I found out but now, I’m fourteen weeks, beginning to show.
I’ve noticed that with this pregnancy I started showing a lot sooner than I did with Holden. My doctor told me that’s normal, that my uterus is already stretched out, so the baby already has space to grow.
I’ve been wearing baggy sweatshirts and T-shirts for weeks now, but I don’t think Holden’s caught on yet.
I stare at myself in the mirror, a prominent bump sticking out from my stomach. I can tell it’s only going to be days until I have to begin telling people about the baby, but I don’t have a few days with Holden.
I drop him off at the airport early tomorrow morning for his flight to Chicago. All he’s ben raving about for the past month and a half has been this computer programming camp- honestly, most of it goes over my head, but I smile whenever he talks about it to me because he gets so enthusiastic.
After seeing him lock himself in his room to play video games all day for months, it’s nice to see him be so passionate about something.
And I hate to tell him such big news right before he leaves for his camp, but if I don’t tell him now, he’ll definitely find out with his own eyes when he gets back.
I drop my shirt, walking hesitantly into the hallway and knocking on his bedroom door.
“Come in,” he calls out.
I open the door to find him hurriedly shoving shirts and shorts into his suitcase that’s laying on his bed.
“Hey, fold those properly so that you have more room in your suitcase,” I advise, taking some shirts from the luggage and folding it into a neat pattern. “And pack some pants, Chicago can still be chilly in June.”
“Okay,” he murmurs, rushing over to his dresser and pulling his pants drawer open.
“I want to talk to you about something,” I tell him, eyes focused on his back.
He freezes in his spot, a pair of black jeans in one hand and a pair of blue jeans in the other. “Okay?”
“Come sit with me.”
He slowly moves over towards me, sitting on the other side of his suitcase. “Okay.”
I take a deep breath, looking him in the eye. “I’m pregnant.”
“O-Okay.”
“Can you say something other than okay?” I question, throwing my hands up in frustration. “Well, is it, is it Winston’s?”
I shake my head, biting my lip.
“How far along are you?”
I squint in confusion, unsure of the sudden change from the questioning of paternity to how far along I am. “Fourteen weeks.”
“Do you know the sex yet?”
“No, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to find that out at all,” I admit.
“I think we should find that out when I get back from the camp, together,” he responds nonchalantly, folding a T-shirt laying on the bed.
I can’t help but feel surprised. I thought he would be shocked, upset, angry, I don’t know, but have a stronger reaction than the one that he’s giving me. I guess this camp really is putting him in a good mood, though. It makes me worried of what his reaction is going to be when he returns to Philadelphia after Chicago.
Will he still have that casual approach, or will it finally hit him that it won’t just be the two of us?
“So, you’re okay with it?” I confirm.
“Yeah. It’s about time we get some change around here.”
I chuckle at that, reaching for another shirt to fold. “Yeah, well, we’re about to get a whole lot of change.”
Please fill out this form on what you want the sex of baby #2 to be!!

*** FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED***
Words: 10.1k
Part 1 // Part 3
“I forgive you, Ro, I really do. It’s the forgetting that’s the hard part. I can forgive, but I can’t forget”
Your words hung heavy in the air and he accepted them graciously. You had just basically rejected Roman, the least you could do now was offer him a place to crash for the night. While his apology had brought you some nice closure, you weren’t ready to jump into a relationship with him and at this point, you weren’t even sure you wanted to anymore. He definitely still had a hold on you, but that’s what scared you. He had just piled a lot on you and you needed some time to digest it all. Doing that with him a room away was not ideal, but you didn’t have the heart to throw him out, especially at this hour.
“Do you want to stay here tonight? It’s late, well early now. I don’t want you out this time of night” you asked him. It felt odd to ask him to stay in a non romantic way after everything.
“On the couch?” He shyly questions.
You crack a smile at his shyness, a contrast to the overconfident Ro you were used to getting. “Yes, on the couch, Ro”.
He agrees after some prodding and that’s how you find yourself digging through the drawer that used to be his, but is now someone else’s, for clothes for him to wear for the night.
He watches you and can’t help but stare at the back of your shirt. “We play for each other” written in the signature Wisconsin font. Who’s was it? Were you dating someone on the team? How had he missed that? He’d admittedly gone through your social media a lot lately and hadn’t detected anything unusual, just the regular back and forth chirping, no flirty interactions, but now he was going to have to go analyze the boys’ comments. Would they do that to him though?
He’s broken from his thoughts when you stand up and say, “These are Brock’s but they should fit, you guys are like close to the same size”. His eyes zoom in on the red 29 on the leg of the sweatpants in your hands.
“Of fucking course” he thinks to himself. He should’ve known Brock would weasel his way in the first chance he got. He tried to not let his irritation leak into his voice as he thanked you for Brock’s clothes and you pretended to not notice the way the muscle in his jaw twitched when you said Brock’s name. It was just like old times.
You laid in bed that night, unable to fall asleep. Tonight had brought up so many feelings and memories. You thought long and hard about the boy sleeping on your couch. From the first time you encountered his fiery temper, to your roller coaster of a time together, to the night that everything went to hell and the mess he left behind.
Living across from a quarter of the men’s hockey team was a blessing and a curse. They were constantly yelling and tonight was no exception, this time accompanied with incessant pounding on a door. You shouldn’t be nosy you kept telling yourself, but a little peek through your peephole wouldn’t hurt anything right? If only you had known how much he would come to change your life.
You peered out just in time to see the boy laying another beating on the door and then putting his whole body into yelling, ”Fuck!”, dropping his head back in defeat when his efforts were met with silence.  He must be locked out. You take a deep breath and open your own door, propping yourself against the door frame. “I was going to invite you inside, but with a temper like that I don’t know that I should?” You tease him, sending a little smile his way to let him know you were only giving him a hard time.
That was the first time you had seen that smirk you love so much spread across his face. You would come to find out his name was Roman and he quickly became your person. Well, besides the other boy in your life who was your best friend.
The highs of your relationship with Roman were so high. You were borderline inseparable with each other. He did everything he was supposed to as a boyfriend, he was the type of guy that you’d proudly brag to your family about, the one your friends looked at and said “I wish”. He could be sweet and thoughtful, and had a spark to him that you adored, his temper the first time you met him, proof of that. He was that little rough around the edges kind of guy that every girl chased, a little mean to everyone but you. You were his soft spot and for a while, you couldn’t have written a better love story. In hindsight things were probably too perfect, you should’ve seen the storm that was brewing.
Between the friction between Brock and Roman and Roman’s wandering eyes, the lows could be pretty low. It was the same old fights every time, always starting and ending the same. Roman never acted on his insensitive behavior, but it still didn’t sit well with you. You tried not to play the jealous girlfriend part too often but sometimes it would just build and build until you snapped and then you both engaged in loud arguments, leaving a sinking feeling in your stomach, but Ro always managed to patch things up afterwards with flowers or warm baths that made you forget all about what had just transpired, at least until next time.
Roman’s jealousy would shine at moments too. He’d call you out saying, “You baby Brock too much” and that “You shouldn’t worry about someone you’re not dating as much as you do. He can handle himself, he’s a big boy” anytime you’d defend Brock, and then under his breath he’d mumble “He’s too soft already” and that drove you crazy. You’d frown at your boyfriend's lack of empathy and ill feelings toward one of the most important people in your life. You had heard some of the stories the boys would tell you and you knew he called Brock soft to his face and you hated it. You loved his temper, but not when it was directed toward your best friend. You had no idea why the boys hated each other so much. Part of the reason you were always so nice to Brock was to make up for your boyfriend's behavior, though if only you knew the half of what Roman said to Brock. You’d called Roman out on it multiple times and instead of apologizing, he’d say, “It’s not like it’s not true. You know it, I know it, and he knows it”. You of course can’t just sit around and leave B out to dry when he wasn’t even around to defend himself so cue another fight. The cycle was endless.
You had half expected Brock to come over and check in on you the night that Owen sent you that picture and your world had caved in on itself, but he had only sent you a simple text that said “I love you. You’ll get through this, I’ll help you”. And then he was at your door the next morning with coffee and a shoulder to cry on, ready to let you grieve and then when you were ready, to pick up all the pieces.
You finally fell asleep that night, not thinking about the boy who had torn you apart but instead about the one who had helped you to grow and become who you were today.
Roman laid on your couch, his mind going a mile a minute. You having a drawer full of Brock’s clothes answered his earlier question about the T-shirt. He hadn’t asked about it though, not wanting to start a fight. You always had a soft spot for the kid. It was one of the very few sore spots of your relationship.
How could he not hate Brock’s guts though? The kid had a huge stinking crush on you and you had no clue, you just continued to show him affection and give him your attention. He thought about all the times you’d go running to Brock after you two had gotten in an argument and he did know about all of them because Brock would waste no time in posting to his Snapchat. But never in a way where it could get turned on him for rubbing it in Roman’s face, it was always just enough so that Roman would know he was with his girl but if Ro dared to bring it up to you you’d take Brock’s side no matter what. You stuck up for Roman in every other situation and would fight a whole hockey team for him, but not when it came to Brock. He wasn’t blind, he knew that Brock could steal you without even trying, though he did credit the kid with trying.
He thought about all the times he had dangled the carrot over your head, practically telling you about Brock’s feelings for you and how you’d watch as Brock’s cheeks reddened and defend Brock and tell Roman to knock it off. He thought about the time that Brock had caused yet another fight by telling you about some locker room talk. That was the first time you had threatened to break up with him and damn it if that didn’t fuel his hatred for his teammate.
Roman sat in his stall, trying to get dressed for practice, but was unable to because all he could hear was Brock’s voice. Normally he could just block it out, but today he was talking to Alex about you and well, he just couldn’t have that. He was downright gushing as he happily told him about grabbing dinner with you at the Union the other night. He rolled his eyes as he bent down to tie his skates. It was time to remind Brock who you belonged to, who had won and who had lost. He begins to tell Tarek and Josh all about the activities that had taken place after your little dinner with Brock. He bragged maybe a little too loud about things you’d hate knowing he talks about in front of the boys, just to make sure Brock heard. Normally, Brock would sit back and take it. He knew that Roman messed with him to get a reaction out of him. But today he was degrading you in front of everyone and he wouldn’t allow that, so he speaks up on your behalf.
“No one wants to hear how quick you are in bed, Ahcan. She probably doesn’t appreciate it either”.
Roman’s face twisted into a smirk knowing he was about to hit him where it hurts. “Shut up, Caufield. We all know you wish you could please her like I do. 30 minutes or 30 seconds, it’s still more than you’ll ever get with her”.
The locker room falls silent and Brock bites his tongue so hard he tastes blood. The amount of disrespect Roman had just shown you made him sick. It takes all of his self control to not tackle Roman in the middle of the locker room. Luckily, his brother keeps him busy as he goes to lunge at Roman, himself. Brock has to throw an arm across his brother and shove him back to his stall. “Don’t”, he says, shooting him a dangerous look. “He’s not worth it. I’ll take care of it”. Cole’s fuming, as he aggressively grabs his stick that’s fallen to the floor in the hustle of things. “You better”, he says as he storms out of the locker room, shoulder checking Roman along the way.
He’d kept his mouth closed about all of Roman’s other taunting and bullshit, but this was unacceptable. He couldn’t let this slide. You deserved to know that your personal business was being spread out for all to hear in the locker room. So he grabbed his phone and sent you a quick text. “Your boy keeps running his mouth about all your bedroom activities in the locker room. Figured you should know.”
When you read the text your heart dropped. It was basically one of your worst nightmares. All of your business and most vulnerable moments on display for a bunch of guys who could pick you apart and look at you differently. You had trusted Roman enough to give yourself to him and this is how he respected you? You felt so many things, but betrayed and angry were at the top of the list. You were ready to lay into his ass when he got back from practice.
You let Roman have it the second he walked through the door. He brushes your feelings aside, as he’s more concerned with who told you.
“I knew that little shit would go running to you”
“It doesn’t matter who told me, but I’m glad they did! There’s two people in this relationship, not a whole locker room”
“Exactly, Y/N, there’s two people in a relationship, the key word being two, not three. Tell Brock to fuck off”
“God, that’s not even the point, Roman. It’s like I speak and you just don’t even listen!”
“How am I not listening? You just said there’s two people in the relationship and I agree with you, but Brock thinks he’s one of those two people and so yeah, maybe I had to remind him who gets to please you in bed and that’s not him”
“If you ever. Fuck and tell again, I swear to God Roman, you’ll be single. I’ll dump your ass so quick. No more kill stories in the locker room.”
While he knew your threat was probably hollow because of the darkness that had taken over your eyes ever since he mentioned pleasing you in bed, part of him should’ve known to never doubt you.
Brock had won that round, you had put Roman in his place rather than him putting Brock in his. He couldn’t stand the fact that you spent so much time with someone who he knew for a fact wanted you as much as he did, especially someone who was the polar opposite of Roman, himself. What if you woke up one day and wanted the sweet guy? Roman knew he wasn’t sweet. The gentle, always doing the right things guy? He tried to show that side of himself to you, but he was generally hard headed, feisty, and anything but just plain old nice. Brock already seemed to fill so many places in your life, he couldn’t let him take over the boyfriend role too. So he made sure Brock knew his place and he had been chastised by you more times than once for it. And apparently it hadn’t worked because it looks like he took his place anyway.
It made him question the night everything went down. Was Brock the one who had sent the picture? He doesn’t remember seeing him there, though he doesn’t remember a whole lot from that night besides the fight. Your look of hurt had stayed with him but he had someone else to go to during that time so he had put the little detail of how you had managed to get the picture in the first place to the back of his mind. Laying here on your couch now, it would make perfect sense for it to have been Brock. He had always had a nagging suspicion but never talked to you about that night.
The bye week couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. The boys had hit a rough patch, having lost three weekends in a row now and the tensions in the locker room were high. The combination of losing and Brock’s history with Roman made for a stressful past month.
Brock breathed a sigh of relief when he didn’t spot Roman anywhere in the bar. Some of the guys had decided to blow off some steam and reset for the upcoming weekend by going out tonight. He scanned the room once more making sure he didn’t see you, but since Roman wasn’t here he didn’t assume you would be either. Ever since you had started dating him, you barely went anywhere without each other much to his dismay. Yes, he had feelings for you but that didn’t change the fact that you were also his best friend. He missed you in more ways than one.
“Dude, she already said she wasn’t coming out tonight”, Ty said, nudging his teammate.
Brock replies instantly, “I don’t know who you’re talking about”. But he knows he’s been caught looking for you again. He doesn’t say anything about the fact that Ty had known who he was looking for without asking.
Owen shows up then with an arm full of beers and a handful of shots. Brock throws back a shot with barely a grimace. It was going to be one hell of a night.
Flash forward a few rounds and the boys are rolling. It had been a fun, easygoing night, exactly what everyone needed. That is until Brock turns his head and spots a certain someone a few tables over. His eyes narrow and he has to do a double take.
His jaw clenches and his hand that wasn’t holding his drink, balls up. He swears he sees red as he looks on at the scene playing out three tables over. He reaches over and grabs Owen’s arm so hard Owen says ow and swats his hand away.
“Please. Tell me that isn’t my Y/N’s Roman making out with that girl?” He says through gritted teeth. He can’t take his eyes away.
“There’s no way..” Owen trails off in disbelief. That was most definitely a girl straddling Roman, her tongue down his throat and that girl was no where close to being you.
The rest of the guys look over then at what has their teammates so dumbfounded and the same silence spreads across the group amidst all the noise of the bar. With ten pairs of eyes burning holes into their faces, the pair continues to make out in the corner, as if you weren’t at home waiting for your boyfriend to return to you.
Brock is livid. He slams his glass down so hard the liquid splashes out and he’s ready to rip Roman to shreds. How could he do that to you? Sure, he had always had an issue with Roman, how could he not? Roman had the girl he had been crushing on since the first day he met her and Roman had no problem rubbing that in his face any chance he got. But he did make you happy (most of the time) and that’s what mattered to Brock. This though? Throwing all of that away, your trust, happiness? It made Brock want to cave Roman’s face in. Nostrils flaring, he’s up and out of his seat.
Owen is quick to grab B’s arm and frantically looks to the other guys for help. Owen’s taller frame was no match for Brock’s 5’9  one when he was fired up and boy, was he fired up. Cole was in front of him then and shoving his older brother back in his seat.
“You can’t go fighting him right now. Not now, not here in the middle of a bar” Cole says, trying to talk some sense into his furious brother.
Brock was seething. “Who does he think he is? This is going to kill Y/N, I’m going to fucking kill him!”
O backs Cole up, “Your brother’s right, man. We all love Y/N, but you and I both know how she is when it comes to Roman. She won’t like that you threw the first punch”.
Brock’s shaking his head at that, he knows they’re right. You always gave Roman the benefit of the doubt and it really grinded Brock’s gears when you made exceptions for Roman. He took you for granted and didn’t appreciate you the way Brock knew he could.
“She probably wouldn’t believe me, just say I’ve always had it out for him. She’s not wrong but I can’t be the one to tell her about this”.
The boys all agree on this and finally Owen says, “Why don’t I just send her a picture? She can’t deny it if it’s right there in front of her, right?”
Brock finally agrees with a small nod. He hates that he can’t just knock Roman out right there. And he hates even more what this picture is going to do to you. He wishes you would’ve just picked him and you never would’ve had to deal with this pain. But you hadn’t, you had chosen the more exciting boy, with his flaring temper and charming smirk. You chose to pass over the cute, boy next door who was everything you needed but nothing you wanted.
You should have known that word would get out somehow that Roman had stopped by. The boys hockey team was worse than old women at tea time when it came to gossip.
You barely had time to register the neatly folded blanket and clothes on your couch before your door was swung open and a very pissed off and hurt looking Brock is storming through it, coffee in hand.
“Well good morning to you too. What’re you doing here so early?” You said in the middle of a yawn.
He shoots you an irritated look. “Early? It’s past noon, Y/N. Or is your long night with Roman screwing with your head again? I can’t believe he had the audactiy to show up here after everything.” The venom in the way he says Roman’s name has you rolling your eyes. Roman had been..civil about Brock last night. Though you noticed the way he tensed about the clothes, he hadn’t said anything. Brock was your rock, your level headed one and yet he was the one speaking out today.
“You do realize this is my apartment you’re standing in right? And my business? And my life?” You’re annoyed that he wants to have this argument again and right after you woke up. He was not catching you at a good time.
Brock had a hard time hearing it wasn’t his life. It was like his hands were pinned behind his back. Roman being back in your life very much affected his own because that would mean he’d lose you again and you were very much a big part of his life.
“Roman staying the night has nothing to do with you” you tell him, plopping yourself on the couch. You catch a glimpse of the hurt that flashes across Brock’s face, along with something else you couldn’t quite place as you reach for your coffee.
Brock felt like he had just been slapped in the face. He had always been there for you, that night and every night there after. He had finally gotten his best friend back and at times it felt like he could have more than that and now you were just brushing him off like his opinion meant nothing. It absolutely killed him that you couldn’t see how much this had to do with him. He was there for you, he’d always been there for you and yet he couldn’t be there for you in the way that he wanted to because you wouldn’t let him.
He wanted to shake you. “That’s where you’re wrong, Y/N. This has every bit to do with me. I was there when he broke you and I helped you pick up the pieces. I let you cry on my shoulder, sleep in my bed. Not just that night but so many times before that. Or do you not remember why ice cream is our thing now? Or all of the walks home we’ve had? And all of the games of pong we’ve played? I’ve put up with so much shit from him for you and I’m sick of seeing you get hurt over and over by the same guy when you deserve so much better than that”.
You weren’t insecure by any means, but everyone had their days and today just so happened to be yours. You had a long day at work and didn’t really want to go out to dinner with the guys, but you had already promised Roman and Brock that you’d be there.
You trailed behind Roman as he led you to the table. Brock immediately noticed that your smile was off as you leaned in to give him a quick hug, not wanting to set off your boyfriend. He gave you an extra squeeze and then released you. He noticed the little frown on your face when the waitress shamelessly flirted with Roman in front of you and Roman made no effort to stop her, even giving into her banter and eyelashes. Wanting to see you smile again, he gave you a little nudge and asked if you were getting the kids’ meal, poking fun at the fact that your ordered chicken fingers everywhere you went. You cracked a smile and playfully punched his arm and then got serious again to tell him that yes, you were in fact going to devour some chicken’s fingers, which he chuckled at.
However when it got around to being your turn to order, Roman spoke up for you. “She’ll just have a salad.” He says to the waitress and she shoots you a look that says she agrees with that being an appropriate selection for you. “Aren’t you trying to start that diet? That’s what you said when you were jumping into your jeans before we got here. Now’s a good time to start” he asks you rather loudly. Your face heats up, embarrassed, but you mumble a “yeah, I guess” and close your menu, handing it to the girl and then looking down at your hands in your lap. Brock is absolutely speechless and the rest of the table is equally uncomfortable. As much as he wanted to deck Roman, he wanted to wrap you up in his arms and tell you how perfect you were even more.
When you snap Brock later that night, you’re by yourself and your face is still in a frown. He knows he has to do something about it, so he asks if you want to go get ice cream with him. You snap back that you really shouldn’t and you’re biting your lip and it makes Brock throw his head back with a groan. Why did the universe hate him so much? He leaves you on open, but grabs his keys and ends up showing up at your door.
“B, what’re you doing here?” you question. Your hair is thrown up in a messy bun and you’re in a pair of sweats and a baggy Badgers hockey tshirt. You look so beautiful and natural, he has to really concentrate to remember what exactly he’s supposed to be doing.
“You said you wanted ice cream?” he said with a smile, as if it were obvious.
You smiled back. “I believe I said that I shouldn’t get ice cream”.
He wouldn’t be taking no for an answer tonight. “No, I think you said you should get ice cream. Go get your shoes or don’t, but we’re still going”.
You shake your head at your best friend, but take the couple steps backward to retrieve your shoes and coat and lock your door as you head off to ruin the diet you hadn’t started.
A short drive later, you find yourself standing at Dairy Queen’s counter debating over a cookie dough or oreo blizzard. “I’ll have a small cookie dough blizzard, please”, you finally decide.
Brock also orders and the cashier asks, “Are you guys together?”
“Yeah, we’re together” he answers and then looking over at you his eyes widen in alarm. “I mean no, we’re not together, well we’re together but not together together”, he stutters over his words.
You’re looking at him like he’s lost his mind, but you’re also laughing, “B, chill. She meant our orders.” and then looking at the annoyed cashier, “yes, to clarify, our orders are together”. Brock mumbles an apology, handing over some bills.
“Well that was fun”, Brock huffs as he brings over your tray. When he sets down a chicken tender basket in front of you, your heart swells.
“What’s this?”
He just shrugs. “Figured you might want your kids’ meal. That salad didn’t look very filling”.
You swear you could cry on the spot at how thoughtful he was. “You noticed that too huh?”
“I notice everything, Y/N”, he says, taking another bite of his blizzard.
“So how is this fair? My boyfriend is an ass to you and me both, yet you’re the one buying me ice cream. Shouldn’t I be buying this for you?”
“How is he an ass to me?” Brock asks you. You’re not wrong, but he’s surprised you’ve noticed.
You give him a sheepish look. “A couple of the boys told me about what Roman said at the bar after last week’s game.”
-
Brock knew what you were referring to even though you were being very vague with your words.
They had gotten shut out and everyone all around had just had an off night. They had gone to the bar to blow off some steam but Roman was still heated, he took a while to calm down. You were off playing pool with Brock and it irritated Roman to no end as he watched you laugh easily with the wannabe lover. Soon your game finished though and you headed to the restroom before rejoining your boyfriend and the group and Roman took advantage of his opportunity. He was jealous and angry and just feeling a little mean so he took a swing at Brock.
“Hey, Caufield, maybe you should spend less time at the pool table and more time on the ice. We would’ve won tonight if you would’ve hit any of the shots you took. You were like 0 for 20.”
Brock looked at him wondering where this was all coming from right now. “Yeah, it wasn’t my best night”, he admitted.
Roman snorts. “Even your best night wouldn’t be good enough. You should stop trying to be your brother, you’ll never be as good as him. The only reason you’re even on the team is because they wanted Cole here, so they tried to sweeten the deal by letting you play” he says pointing at Cole with his beer and then taking a swig.
The comment brings an onslaught of “Hey, hey, hey”, “I think you’ve had enough”, “That was unnecessary” and “You better fucking take that back” from all the guys at the table. Everyone knew Roman could be a real dick when he wanted to be, but that comment was taking it too far. Just then you returned to the table, seeing everyone’s faces you asked “Whoa, what’d I miss?”
“Nothing. As fun as this has been, I think I’m gonna head home” he said looking at Roman. You pouted, but you didn’t question it as you hugged him goodbye and told him to text you when he got home so you knew he was safe.
-
“By a couple of the guys, I'm sure you’re referring to my brother?” he chuckles.
“I didn’t say that”, you tell him, but the small smile you’re wearing tells all.
“Yeah, he was pretty fired up over that”, Brock says.
“As he should’ve been! Why didn’t you say anything that night? I was fucking pissed when I found out. That was completely uncalled for. I let him have it when I found out. We’ve barely spoken all week because I’m still mad at him. Probably why he was such a dick tonight” you say, ripping off another piece of a chicken tender.
Brock just shrugs. “I don’t know why I didn’t say anything that night. It’s not like it’s not true, nothing I haven’t heard before. I know I’ll never be as good as Cole.”
You frown at the boy sitting across from you and take his hand in yours. “You know none of what Roman said is true, right? Not one word. You’re playing hockey for a D1 school and not just any school, the college hockey capital, Brock. You have so much talent and skill, I promise you’re on the team because they need a reliable, dependable, versatile player like you. You’re such a valuable part of the team, B.”
He would probably cry if you weren’t in the middle of Dairy Queen. You said the words with such conviction and love that he believed every one. To think that you saw all of that in him meant the absolute world to him.
“Thank you, Y/N. I can’t tell you how much that means to me”, he tells you honestly.
You beam at him. “Of course, B.”
He smiles back at you. “And to answer your question, no offense, but I’m sure you’ll have the opportunity to buy me ice cream when Roman screws up again. It can be like our thing”.
---
You were at your breaking point as you pulled up Brock’s contact. There was a good chance he was already sleeping and wouldn’t answer, but you had no other options so you pressed call. He answered on the first ring.
“B, I really need you. Can you come get me please?”
Brock shot up in bed at the sound of your shaky voice. “Y/N? Are you okay? Where are you?”
“I- yeah, I’m fine. I’m just stranded. Roman and I got into this huge fight and he left and won’t answer my calls or texts. I’m sorry to bother you, I know you left hours ago, but Roman has my credit card and cash so I can’t even get an Uber… I could walk, but it’s kind of far”
“No” he just about yells into the phone. “Don’t you dare leave wherever you are by yourself. I’m coming. I’m leaving right now, just send me your location and stay on the phone with me so I know you’re ok, okay?”.
You do and he curses to himself. He couldn’t believe Roman left you stranded and drunk at a party in the middle of Madison. That was low, even for Roman.
“B, why do you sound so out of breath? Are you running?” you ask. You can hear his breathing through the phone and it sounds slightly labored.
“Are you calling me out of shape?” he jokes, “Yeah, I had a few beers tonight so I don’t want to take the chance of driving. We can walk home together. But I want to get to you as soon as I can so I’m jogging. I’m about a block away now, should see you in five or so minutes”.
You blink away your surprise, your hand clutching at your heart. You look up to the sky and thank whoever it was above for blessing you with Brock.
“How did I get so lucky to have a best friend like you?”
You don’t see him trip as you say “best friend”. It must’ve been a crack in the sidewalk, just like the one in his heart.
--
You knew going in that dating a basically famous college hockey player wasn’t going to be easy. You knew what you signed up for. Admittedly, most of the time Roman would make you forget about the outside world. He acted like any other boyfriend, spoiling you with love and affection. But there were times that the ugly side of what he does came to bite you and unfortunately he was the one to bring it up.
It was a Saturday night and the boys were having a party to celebrate the weekend’s sweep. Your night had been great until you had heard Roman’s comments. You were standing with a small group of girls gossiping about the one girl’s interest in Mike when you heard your boyfriend’s voice brag about the “hundreds of girls flooding his Dm’s after that game against Ohio State”.
“No way you have hundreds, there was barely anyone there at those games last weekend”. Tarek pointed out, trying to call his bluff.
“Okay, maybe not hundreds, but there’s a ton. I could literally have any girl I wanted. And they’re all like, really hot too.” He glanced to his left and saw you standing there, but you were turned, not paying him any attention so he continued, “Check out the rack on this one, pretty face to match too”.
Your heart sunk as you listened to the boys talk, one boy in particular really. You turned around just to make sure it was your boyfriend even though you’d know his voice anywhere. He was standing with a group of the guys, his profile to you, but he was only a handful of steps away. Close enough for you to see him holding out his phone to prove to Tarek that he had a bunch of Dm’s. You watched on as his thumb scrolled down the list until he found the girl he wanted to show off. You suddenly didn’t feel like being at the party anymore.
Brock was standing with Lex, Cole, Ryder, and Dylan when he first heard bits of the conversation going on in the group next to him. His temper flared as he realized it was Roman who was doing the bragging. If Roman even glanced to his left in the slightest, he would’ve seen you standing there, well within earshot. And then he watched as Roman did just that, looked right at you and still continued to show off. Brock too looked over at you, hoping by some miracle that you weren't hearing what was going on. But when his eyes fell on you, you were already staring at Roman and there was a pained expression on your features. His heart broke for you and he wished for the millionth time that he could show you what love really is. But he couldn’t so he settled for at least getting you out of that situation. He didn’t even bother saying anything to the boys as he removed himself from the group and walked over to you, placing himself right in between you and Roman.
“Can I steal you for a few? I could really use a kick ass pong partner” he asked, smirking at you. He knew you loved pong, it was one of the few drinking games you were actually good at.
You took one last look over the shoulder of Brock and saw your boyfriend pulling up yet another girl’s profile so you gave Brock a weak smile and followed him across the room to the pong table, far away from Roman.
It only took a few throws for your arms to be held over your head and your chirping to take over. You and Brock pretty much dominated, to the point that it would’ve been boring had you guys not been keeping each other entertained.
With one cup left, Brock looked at you, a confident smirk on his lips. “Are you ready for this trick shot, Y/N? I’ve been practicing.”
You grinned and nodded eagerly. “Show me what you’ve got, Caufield.”
Instead of overhand tossing the pong ball, he flicks his wrist underhand so that the ball bounces off the ceiling and arcs directly into the remaining cup.
His arms raise wide above his head and he backs up in a subtle celly. The smile on his face can only be described as cocky.
Your jaw is still on the floor, but you're screeching and launching yourself into his arms. He easily catches you, lifting you off of your feet and spinning you around.
The room is loud, still reacting to Brock’s trick shot, but you don’t hear any of it as he holds you close, still having not put you back on your feet. The smile on your face is bright when you tell him, “I can’t believe you just did that! I hope you know you just sealed your fate as my pong partner for life”.
---
“While I appreciate you doing all of that, and I really do, I couldn't have done it without you, I didn’t ask you to do any of that. Never did I ask you to come save me” you snapped at him, trying to defend yourself. And it was true, you had never once asked for Brock to come save you, he just did.
Hands running through his hair, tugging hard, that’s when Brock explodes. You were practically proving his point. “That’s the thing, Y/N, is you shouldn’t have to ask! It should just be normal for someone who cares about you to not hurt you over and over and to be there for you and help you get better when you’re hurting, not just turn their back on you with some other girl and then just show back up in your life when they decide they want you back. That’s not how it’s supposed to be.” He’s looking at you desperately, you were putting him in jail for something he didn’t even do.
You know he’s right. You know it with every bone in your body. Roman had done things that were far from loving and had conditioned you to think that that’s what love looked like. You had made exceptions for his behavior and built a tolerance for his actions. And that’s not how it was supposed to be. But you had also loved him and part of you still did and that was hard to just turn off and forget, you would know because you had tried.
“Brock, I loved him. You know that. What was I supposed to do? Things weren’t perfect, but I couldn’t just throw away what we had and pretend that I didn’t feel anything for him. I accepted him and his flaws because that's what love is.”
He hears every word of what you’re saying because he feels it too. He was living a parallel life, but with you. As much as he’s tried and wishes he could, he can’t just turn off his feelings for you and pretend they weren’t there. He accepted your flaws even if giving too much of yourself to others who didn’t deserve you was one of them. He wants to tell you that he could have shown you what loving hard instead of hard love is but he knows the time isn’t right for that confession yet. There’s still a lot left to be said.
“Well he threw it away for you and now you’re what? Just going to let him walk right back in again? You’re going to let him back in like usual? It’s not hard to see why he doesn’t take you seriously, if you don’t even take yourself seriously. You need to at least respect yourself, since he never does. You’re better than that, Y/N. We worked so hard-“ he corrects himself, “you worked so hard to be strong and build yourself back up...I’m just afraid he’ll break you again”.
His concern was well placed but the fact that he just assumes that you’d let Roman walk back in, even though you almost did and that he thought you’d break so easily was disappointing. “Well what am I supposed to do Brock? I’m not some D1 big time hockey player like you, I don’t just have this line waiting at my door to take me out like you guys do”
Brock’s voice catches in his throat as he almost lets out the secret he’s been keeping bottled up from you. But he panics and instead tells you, “you need to figure this out, Y/N because I can’t stand by and watch that happen again. And if you do decide that he’s the one you want and you’re willing to let him into your life again, I can’t promise to be there to put back the pieces this time.”
His statement makes your eyebrows shoot up.You don’t know that you’d still be here had Brock not been there for you, and as he pointed out not just this past time but so many times before. You can’t imagine having to go through another heartbreak, much less without having Brock at your side. Your heart’s racing at the thought of losing him. His statement surprises you and hits you like a ton of bricks. Why’d you have to break what you love so much?
“You’d leave me?” You quietly ask him, tears threatening to spill.
He sighs, shaking his head. Why was this so hard? “I’d never leave you,” he says swallowing hard, “but I can’t hurt like that again”.
The look on his face shatters your heart and you know you’re the one to blame.
You don’t miss that he’s talking about himself and you hate that you’ve caused him so much hurt over the years. You’d put him through more than one ever should and you’re hating yourself because this is the first time he’s admitting to you that it hurts him. Hurts him to see you with someone else, hurts him to always be the one to pick up the pieces, and hurts him that you might pick that someone over him again. You knew his feelings for you, you had for a while now. Cole had pulled you aside and told you as much and as if that wasn’t confirmation enough, you had accidentally overheard Brock say it himself, just not to you.
Brock had invited you over for a movie night, something you had done regularly with him in the months before you had started dating Roman. But ever since you started seeing Ro they had become less and less frequent until it got to the point where they ceased to exist all together. So he had finally reserved you for the night and had a whole night planned for you two to catch up. Or so he thought.
He was rushing around his dorm, trying to find his wallet and keys to go pick you up. He needed to hurry so that you guys weren’t late for your reservation. A new steak place had opened up downtown and though it was a little more fancy than your usual pizza dates, he knew you had been wanting to try it so he made the reservation.
“B if you’re five minutes late they’re not going to give your table away” Cole tells his brother, sensing his nerves.
“Yeah but if I’m five minutes late picking Y/N up, then we’re going to be 15 minutes late to the restaurant and then the table will be gone” he replies.
Cole shakes his head at how well Brock knows you. The boy had it bad. “Yeahhh you’re right. You better get a move on then.”
Brock huffs in response as he trips putting his other shoe on.
“Oh and good luck on your date” Cole calls as Brock heads out the door, lightly teasing him. Brock smiles but flips his little brother off as he shuts the door.
Not 20 minutes later, a very disappointed and frustrated Brock is slinking his way back through the door. Cole pauses the game he had been watching on the tv and turns toward Brock as he throws himself on the couch.
“She cancelled.” Brock mumbles into the cushion.
“What?!” Cole questions. He shouldn’t be surprised, he could probably guess as to the reason you cancelled but he couldn’t believe you’d do that to Brock and so last minute.
“S’fine. I’m fine. Everything’s fine.” He said, face still pressed into the couch.
“It’s not fine, Brock! I get that you’re like in love with her but she doesn’t just get a pass. That was really shitty. Did she say why she cancelled?”  He was fired up now, as Brock should’ve been but he would let you get away with murder.
He sighed as he pushed himself to a seated position and shrugged. “Said Roman had some kind of thing planned that he just told her about and she meant to text me about it but forgot. She felt bad”.
And just like that you were let off the hook, Cole could tell by the simple way he justified your actions by saying you felt bad. It didn’t erase the hurt that was in his face even if he tried to make his voice sound casual or the droop in his shoulders. It seems to be a more and more common thing lately and he doesn’t like it.
Turning the tv off he stands up. “Well let’s not let that dinner reservation go to waste. Steak sounds pretty good and you’re buying! ” he says and kicks Brock’s shoe to get him off the couch and back out the door.
As it turns out, Cole was right and they won’t give the table away if you're five minutes late. The steak was actually worth the reservation and it was nice to spend some one on one time with his brother. He knew nights like that wouldn’t last much longer. Brock seemed to be in less of a slump but Cole continued his care taking, telling Abby he’d call her tomorrow and catch her up on the Brock/Y/N saga to watch movies with his brother.
His phone rings in the middle of Grown Ups and Cole doesn’t even have to guess to know who it is. “You should just leave her hanging after she ditched you tonight” he says.
Brock shoots him a look and picks up on the second ring. “Y/N? Is everything ok?”
With the movie paused, Cole can hear the whole conversation, though he could’ve told Brock without having heard. It was the same old story. Roman promised one thing and then did another, leaving you upset and Brock comforting you. Of course he invited you over and offered to come and get you, already putting his shoes back on before even hanging up the phone.
“You deserve better than second best, Brock” he honestly tells his brother.
Brock looks at him then with a look of defeat and acceptance. “I’ll take what I can get.”
A short time later he returns with you in tow. You look sad, just as Brock had hours earlier when he walked through that same door, but without you. You give a tight lipped smile to Cole and then you’re following Brock to his bedroom where you’ll spend the night telling Brock about your boyfriend while wrapped in Brock’s arms and in Brock’s bed.
It breaks his heart that you’re crying again over him..Brock would never make you cry until your wedding day when he shed tears of his own and you wouldn’t be able to hold yours in because you always cry when other people do.
The next morning is when Cole decides to give you a reality check. You emerge from Brock’s bedroom in his T-shirt and Cole just raises an eyebrow at you. From an outsider’s point of view, you knew what it looked like. But it was Cole and this was unfortunately a rather regular occurrence. Nothing had happened, nothing would happen. “What?” You ask him as you reach into the cabinet and grab a mug. Their home was basically yours too, you spent so much time there.
“We’re gonna go grab something to eat before he drops me off, do you want to come with us?” You ask. Your offer however, is met with silence even though Cole is staring right at you.
“Dude what’s your problem today? Are you not speaking to me or what?” You question, growing irritated.
Cole thought the world of you, honestly. You had become a close friend but his brother was his favorite person and you were messing with his happiness so it was about time you were put in check.
“You know, one day he won’t be waiting around for you anymore. He’ll have his own girlfriend again and he won’t be able to play part time boyfriend when yours decides to be an asshole”.
He doesn’t specify who “he” is but you know he’s talking about Brock. And he doesn’t come out and say that Brock has feelings for you but “waiting around” sure makes it seem like maybe he does. You want him to just say it.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about” you say, looking down at the mug in your hands. Brock’s favorite you think to yourself.
Cole gives you a look and holds his hand out in front of him, gesturing up and down your body. “Come on, Y/N. Don’t give me that. Look at yourself right now. Where are you right now? Where do you spend your time, enough to know where the mugs are? Whose clothes are you wearing? Whose bed did you sleep in? Who was beside you? Who -“
“Okay, okay. Jeez, I get your point” you say, wincing, wanting to stop him there.
“Do you though? Because you let him get all the way to your place before you cancelled on him last night. You didn’t see the look that was on his face when he came back home. He’d been looking forward to this all week, Y/N. He’s been planning this all week. He never gets to see you anymore” Cole continues.
You grimace, knowing you did him dirty. “All week? I felt so bad -“
Cole cuts you off, not wanting to hear the excuse he’s heard a hundred times before “but Roman” is how it always starts.
“Yes. All week. He even made a reservation for you guys at that new steak place you’ve been wanting to go to. Hell the kid spent a half hour going through his closet and making me choose between shirts” he tells you.
Your heart sinks when you hear about all of his wasted efforts and the thought he had put into wanting to have a night with you.
“And you obviously didn’t feel too bad because you still called him when Roman bailed. You always call him, Y/N. Maybe you should think about the fact that he’s always the one you turn to when you need something, maybe he should just be the one. You can’t keep going back and forth between your two boyfriends though, it’s hurting Brock too much and I won’t let that happen anymore. He’s dealing with enough shit right now, he doesn’t need you hurting him too”.
His words sit heavy in your mind and never leave you. You can’t say how much of an impact they’ve had on your affection toward him since then but it definitely plays a part, maybe one larger than you realized.
Brock and Roman had been going at each other all day. Brock had started hanging around less and less so you were excited to be able to spend the whole evening together. The boys were having game night and then hitting the bar. Starting with the pregame Roman had been a pain. He was complaining about the whole night and how he didn’t want to share you. This meant he was extra clingy and barely let you out of sight. You really had wanted to see Brock, but he was in the apartment across the hall, the team having to split into two apartments since everyone was coming out tonight.
You pryed yourself from Roman and wandered to the next room, an easy smile spreading across your face as you found who you were looking for. You were instantly wrapped in a warm hug and he kept an arm over your shoulders as he talked close to your ear, trying to be heard over the shouting of the boys. “I saw you earlier and wanted to come say hi but didn’t want your boyfriend to get mad” he tried to play it off as joking but you could hear the slight bite to his words. He didn’t get to say much else as Roman came in and spotted your two heads bent together in the middle of the room. He made a not so light hearted comment about Brock stealing his girl and then all but dragged you back to the other room claiming you guys were up next for pong even though you still had to wait 15 minutes for the game to be finished.
And that’s how the night went with the two boys exchanging jabs and glares. Roman’s temper is short with you and even shorter for Brock. He’s been making stupid comments to you that he knows get on your nerves like “damn those jeans make your ass look good. Brock doesn’t her ass look good?” And “your shirt’s so low cut every guy in this bar has been staring at your tits, just ask Caufield.” and each time Brock also sends a look your way, one you read as pity and you become frustrated. There was a difference between him complimenting you and him making you feel like a piece of meat and tonight he was doing the latter. He was also dragging Brock into it which he knew you hated and so you became increasingly angry, more with yourself and Roman but after about the tenth time Brock looks over at you you take it out on him and just snap. “I don’t need the looks, ok Brock? I can take care of myself, you looking at me every time he opens his mouth isn’t making anything better”. You can’t quite read the look on his face before he just nods and says he’s going to head out for the night. You groan and guilt and more frustration flood your system. You know you have to go after him because it’s Brock after all. So after corralling a stupidly drunk Roman into his bed you head over to Brock’s to apologize.
The first thing you hear when you go to knock on his door is yelling. You don’t expect to hear anything given the time of night but with the quiet halls you can hear every word he’s shouting. “I just don’t get why she lets him treat her like that! She’s so strong and independent and then she just sits there while he spouts off his mouth the whole night. And she’s so beautiful like how can he even say the things he said tonight.”
He’s obviously talking about you, that much you can tell. You can’t hear what the other person is saying but you do hear what Brock is saying next. “ I just need her to give me one shot. That’s all I’m asking for is one shot to show her how much better I can be for her. Be to her. If I could just show her how much I love her and appreciate her the way she deserves… god why am I not good enough? I do everything I can for her, hell I’d do more if she let me. Do I have to act like an ass to get her attention? Because I’m pretty sure that’s the only thing I haven’t done yet”
You feel extremely guilty standing there in front of his door listening to something he doesn’t know you’re hearing, him pouring his heart out. But you’re frozen in place with his confession. You eventually get your act together and do what you went there to do in the first place, the whole time with your heart beating in your ears.
You had never let on that you knew how he felt. You had honestly thought that maybe his feelings for you would lessen until they disappeared since you had at the time still been very much in love with Roman. You hate to say it but you were often times wrapped up in your own drama that you pushed his feelings to the back of your mind but they were always there. With everything that he had told you that night, unknowingly and everything he was saying now, you could see it all in a new light.
Right now, with his cheeks flushed and his chest still heaving from anger and emotion it’s clear that those feelings are still very much present. He’s so worked up that you have to put a hand on his chest, something you often did with Roman, to calm him. Though unlike Roman, B instantly softens as soon as you touch him, practically melting under your hand.
“B, stop. It’s ok, I’m not getting back together with him. We talked and he apologized. It was nice closure, but that’s all it was for me, was closure. I can’t forget what he did. What you did to help me. You’re right, we did build me up and he’s not worth losing myself or you over. I don’t want to do this to you anymore, I don’t want to lose you” You can literally feel his heart skip a beat as you drop this information on him.
His mouth tries to form words but all he comes up with is “oh”. He’s surprised to say the least. “So what now? Is he going to go back to being an asshole to me about you?”
You frown. “Not if I have anything to say about it. I really am sorry you had so much to deal with because of me. So much stuff that I had no idea about. You did it so well, you’ve been so understanding, so good. If it were anybody else, they wouldn’t have lasted a day dealing with me and all of my baggage. But you, you’ve been the answer to all of my prayers”.
His heart catches at your words. Finally, finally he was getting some recognition for all the hell he had been through for you. He gives you a soft smile and a little shrug. “Wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle. I’m glad you didn’t have to deal with it, honestly. Now that I don’t have to worry about you not listening to me about him it makes it all that much more worth it. You’re worth it”.
You roll your eyes but there’s a smile on your face as you say, “and I love you for that” and you don’t know what that little line does to him.
He has to look away when you say that even though he knows you can see the blush quickly taking over his cheeks and feel his heart hammer a little faster over it. It gives him a little courage to try and see if maybe he can get you to say those words to him again, but in the way that he’s been wanting all of these years.
“You’re gonna kill me, aren’t you?” He mumbles, running a hand over his face.
“What’s that supposed to me, Caufield?” You ask, tilting your head up so that your eyes can search his face.
A look of wonder is on his face as he says “You have no idea do you?”
Now it’s your turn for your heart to speed up as you do have an idea of what he might be about to tell you.
You don’t get the chance to hear what he has to say because you hear yelling from the hall and the voice that it belongs to is Owen. Both of your heads turn as he crashes through your door, breathless.
“Y/N have you seen Brock, I think we have a problem - oh shit, am I interrupting something?”

Merry Christmas!
Tumblr media
Even before reaching the common room, she could hear the Christmas music.
Usually she wouldn't mind someone trying to spread the holiday cheer for all the operators who would be spending Christmas on duty. And even those who don't celebrate Christmas, didn't seem to mind the music and the decorations. But she did.
Or more accurately, she minded ever since one particular colleague of hers, made it his mission to torment her.
Although torment might be a bit of a harsh description.
Dominic Brunsmeier wanted to be a little shit and use the general holiday spirit and especially one decorative item to steal a kiss from her.
The first time he smugly pointed at the mistletoe they were standing under, her quick combat reflexes helped her duck away before he could get a hold of her.
"Hey! That's cheating, " he had called after her, while her laugh echoed through the hallway as she ran away.
She should've known that he wouldn't let it go that easily.
That man had spent years upon years alone undercover. He knew how to play the long game.
So for the past 3 weeks, she never walked through a door without checking for the treacherous little sprig and the german operator who never seemed too far away from it.
She had even taken to carrying around a baton, so she could nudge the mistletoe off, whenever she encountered one.
It didn't seem to deter Dominic though.
He kept at it. Only grinning at her when he caught her destroying yet another trap. "I'll get you eventually Engelchen."
"In your dreams Brunsmeier," she had scoffed, even though she was sure he noticed the upwards twitch of her lips she failed to suppress.
Another memorable moment in their game had been when she tried to throw him off with the help of Alexsandr. Everybody had already caught on to the special cat-and-mouse game, so when she asked the Russian operator for help, he immediately agreed with a big grin on his face.
They walked to the common room together and just as expected, there was a mistletoe sneakily attached to the corner of the doorway, meaning Dominic wasn't far.
Alex gestured for her to go first. So she did. And just when her eyes met Dom's who was leaning against a couch, she felt Alex grab her wrist to pull her back. "Not so fast Милашка. I think I get a kiss."
She didn't tear her eyes away from Dominic until she saw them widen in realization.
She had to suppress a giggle, since Alex was already leaning down to her height.
Just as he planted a firm kiss on her lips, she heard the German in the background complain "That's not fair! That's my kiss."
When Alex released her, she was ready to reply, but the Russian beat her to it with a laugh in his voice. "I didn't know you wanted a kiss from me so badly. But don't worry. I got plenty to give."
"Fuck you, " came instantly from Dominic, who was grinning nonetheless.
Their game went on until there weren't many days left until Christmas.
And she could tell he was getting desperate, for the mistletoe now also appeared in random places like the stairwell or the inside of the kitchen cabinets. One was even placed so high above her locker that she had to get a ladder to get it off.
Despite the music playing, the common room was empty. Suspicious.
She made sure it was really empty by immediately checking every corner and possible hiding place, just like she would in a combat situation.
But then the arm around her waist and the whispered "Got you" made her stiffen.
Damn that sneaky bastard!
She knew it was Dominic. It was hard to admit, but she had grown accustomed to the smell of him, to the sound of his voice, his barely noticeable accent, his presence in her daily life.
The hold on her waist was strong enough for her to know she couldn't just wiggle away. Of course she could fight him off if she really wanted to, but hurting him really wasn't on her agenda for today. Or any other day if she was being honest.
She slowly turned in his grasp and the first thing she spotted was his gleeful smile, before her eyes caught the greenery dangling right above their heads.
"How the fuck..." she trailed off upon taking in the fact that he had really put a mistletoe on a stick so he could hold it up wherever.
They both laughed before she bumped her head against his chest, relaxing into his embrace. "You're such a dork."
She looked back up into his face, expecting a smart retort, but was only met with his intense gaze that suddenly threatened to set her on fire.
She shouldn't be feeling like this for her colleague. She shouldn't...
When his face slowly lowered to her own, time seemed to freeze. Not even the clattering of the mistletoe stick as it hit the ground registered in her brain, as his nose bumped against hers, his now free hand coming up to hold her chin in place.
Her eyes fluttered shut as first his beard tickled against her skin, before he brushed his lips against hers.
A shuddering breath left her lips, before it was cut off by his firm mouth pressed against hers.
She responded tentatively, grasping the front of his uniform as she tilted back to meet his lips fully. He pushed closer, mouth parting slightly as he deepened the kiss. His hand slid down to her neck, still holding her in place.
It was as if he was trying to devour her, to never let her get away again.
The hand that was not at her waist wandered into her hair, gripping it gently. She couldn't stop herself from answering his passion with the same enthusiasm he was showing her.
She slid her arms around his neck and pulled herself impossibly closer to him, almost moaning when her body felt his muscles even through the layers of clothes.
The hand from her waist slid down to her backside and he cupped her ass eagerly.
Her heart was hammering against her rip cage as she tried getting enough air into her lungs between kisses while Dominic barely seemed to feel the need to breathe.
"I'm not sleeping with my colleagues, " she managed to gasp out, after pushing herself away from him a few measly centimeters, fully aware that the willpower to stay true to her word was dwindling with every second.
His mouth was back on hers with barely a "Mhmm," to signal he had indeed heard her words.
"I also don't date my colleagues, " she insisted with the next gasp for air.
Again Dominic only hummed, his hands squeezing her ass firmly to get her closer again.
"It only gets messy, " she continued, yet not doing anything more to stop his kisses.
She felt his grin against her lips when he mumbled a cheeky "I sure hope so."
Even she didn't know if the sound that left her in response was a groan or moan "I'm serious."
With visible effort Dom pulled himself away from her and sighed before gently bumping his forehead against hers. "Look, Engelchen... I really like you. Or I wouldn't have been that persistent about getting a kiss. And from your reaction just now, I would say you like me too."
Despite knowing he was right, she still tried to keep it together, get back to something that at least resembled professional behavior. "That doesn't chan-"
Both hands now on her hips, he swayed them both to the rhythm of the slow music that played in the background. "Let me take you on a date. We can take it slow. And if it doesn't work out, I promise not to make it awkward."
Fuck. She wanted to say yes. She wanted to be in his arms, run her fingers along his beard, hear his goofy jokes. She knew she shouldn't though. "But..."
The german cut her off with a quick peck on her lips. "Say yes," he whispered before pulling away again to look into her eyes.
Her hands finally slid away from behind his neck, down to his chest. And she sighed before she playfully patted his stomach. "Alright. But I'm expecting something spectacular. You gotta blow my socks off."
Dominic's grin put the shine of the Christmas lights around them to shame. "Trust me, it'll be so good, you'll be the one who wants to blow somethi- OWW."
Tumblr media
Bonus:
"Eeekk! What..." before she could even get her question out, she burst out laughing, almost immediately gasping for air.
She tried her best to see through the tears that were already gathering in her eyes, wiping furiously to get another look at Domi.
He stood in front of her, in what was obviously supposed to be a sexy santa outfit. The red dress rimmed with white fluffy fabric way too short on his broad frame. She would almost be able to see his underwear. If he was wearing any, which she wasn't so sure about with him. To add some more flair to his outfit he had also put on a hat with blinking Christmas lights and red knee high socks.
"I take it, I exceeded all your expectations," he asked, turning his back to her and shaking his barely covered ass.
At first she could still only wheeze as a reaction, but she tried to get some words out anyway. "You… are… out...out… of… your mind!"
"And you love it," he simply stated while walking up to her.
While she was still calming down and wiping the rest of the tears off her face, he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. "Does your sexy Santa get a kiss before we go and gift the others with the sight of my gorgeous legs?"
She risked a glance down at said legs, and barely contained another laugh before looking back into his face. "Kissing Santa? I'm sure that'll put me on his naughty list," she teased.
He was prevented from answering when she placed a hand on his bare thigh, sliding it upwards under his dress while the other gently grasped his beard to guide his lips to hers.

Fic: Navigate the Stars
Fandom: Roswell New Mexico
Pairing: Malex (Michael Guerin/Alex Manes)
Notes: Still trying to figure out Michael and Alex’s voices, but I’m getting there.
Prompt: Getting lost somewhere
----
“Can’t you like, navigate us home by the stars or some shit?”
“Why? Because I’m part Navajo?” Alex asks, annoyed. “Sure. Let me just do a rain dance, smoke the peace pipe, and build us a tepee while we’re at it.”
“That’s not what I meant,” Michael says with a dramatic sigh and a roll of his eyes. “I just meant, didn’t they train you for this kind of shit in the military?”
Alright, that’s fair. The Air Force did indeed train him for this exact kind of situation. Not that Alex will tell Michael that.
“I cannot believe you got us lost,” is what Alex says instead.
“This is why I don’t do nice things for you,” Michael grumbles and Alex can just feel Michael’s rant coming.
“I’m sorry, nice things?” he scoffs. Were they or were they not lost in the middle of the desert instead of cuddled up on the couch with Netflix?
“Why don’t you ever take me anywhere nice, Michael? Why don’t we do more things together, Michael?”
“Don’t even start with me,” Alex groans. “At what point did I ever give you the impression that this was what I wanted?”
“You literally shoved all of Max and Liz’s camping pictures in my face the other day,” Michael complains. “Kept going on and on about romance. Of course I thought that this was what you wanted.”
“I am about to ship off for six months to a country that has no established base. I am going to be camping for god knows how long until we can get shit set up. Why on Earth would I want to spend my last weekend with my boyfriend in the middle of the desert?”
“Fine, your boyfriend’s a fuck up. What do you want me to say?” Michael says, and the sad look on his face has Alex turning away. He’s not ready to give up his anger just yet.
“Oh my god, this is not getting us anywhere,” Alex grumbles as he looks up at the stars and tries to remember which constellations he’s supposed to be looking for to guide them back to camp. The last time he did this, he was on the other side of the world.
Michael sighs and throws his stuff on the ground, clearly giving up on them ever finding their way back.
“What are you really mad at?” Michael asks him.
“You!” He’d thought that much was obvious.
“No. No. See, you do this every time,” Michael says. “Every damn time you’ve been deployed, you find a reason to be mad at me. A reason to push me away before you leave. I thought we were done with this. When we got back together, you promised me that you were past this shit.”
“When we got back together I didn’t think I was going to get deployed again did I?” he practically yells, annoyed that Michael would even bring that up again. Didn’t they also promise each other to stop bringing up their past mistakes and move forward?
“Why are you yelling at me?” Michael asks, and the sadness in his voice only fuels Alex’s anger.
This is so fucking stupid.
“I’m missing a leg!” he yells, because he can. Because nobody else is around to overhear them. “When I reenlisted to keep you all safe, I was missing a leg. I literally thought I was safe from being deployed to a potential war zone, because I’m disabled. But no, some idiots had to go champion for disabled rights and now I’m apparently the only person with the proper expertise for this deployment. It’s bullshit. I’ve served enough!”
“Okay,” Michael says, too calmly for Alex’s taste.
“Haven’t I already given enough for this fucking country?”
“Okay,” Michael says again, standing up to walk over to him with his arms up in surrender.
“It’s utter bullshit!”
“Okay,” he says, wrapping Alex in a hug.
“Stop saying that!” he argues, refusing to hug him back. He’s not in the mood to be soothed. He wants to yell and scream and break things.
“O— Sorry,” Michael says.
They both fall quiet and Michael continues to hold him while Alex’s anger calms.
“I don’t want to go,” Alex whispers, scared to put that out there. He’s an airman. Airmen accept the deployments handed to them with pride, ready to serve and protect.
“I don’t want you to go,” Michael whispers back.
He wraps his arms around Michael’s hips and lays his head against his shoulder, enjoying the feeling of Michael’s hands rubbing soothing circles on his back. He’s going to miss this. He fought so hard to finally have this, and now he’s terrified of losing it.
“We could run away,” Michael says softly. “They can’t make you do this.”
“And go AWOL?” Alex says, taking a moment to contemplate the idea. He’d never do that. Michael knows he’d never do that. Still, it’s a nice fantasy. “Where would we go?”
“Anywhere. You know I’ve never seen anything outside of New Mexico,” he says. “We could go visit Max and Liz in California.”
“LA?” Alex says with disgust. “Pass.”
“We could get a place up in the mountains. Colorado maybe?” Michael suggests. “You were saying that you missed living in Jim Valenti’s cabin.”
“Is this your way of telling me that you’re finally ready to move in together?” Alex asks.
“Move in together?” Michael scoffs. “I already sleep at your place every night of the week. Just because I haven’t sold my airstream—”
“Doesn’t mean that you’re not committed, I know,” Alex finishes for him.
They’ve already had this discussion numerous times. Alex wants Michael to sell the airstream and put the money towards something for himself. School. Starting his own business. Something. The airstream is just sitting there, not being used. Meanwhile, Michael doesn’t have the finances to do any of the things he claims he wants to do with his life.
At least… that’s Alex’s argument to Michael. Secretly, he’s a lot more selfish in his dislike of the airstream. Alex hates the idea that Michael has such an easy out of their relationship. That at any given time, he could just pack up and leave because he has somewhere else to go.
But he gets it. Michael grew up without a home for so long and he saved up for a long time to have something he could buy outright. Something that nobody would ever be able to take away from him. Alex gets why Michael feels the need to hang onto that. He doesn’t like it, but he gets it.
The two of them fall into silence again, but it’s not uncomfortable. Alex is enjoying just being with Michael.
“Do you really think it’s wrong for disabled men to get deployed?” Michael asks.
“No,” Alex says with a sigh. Now that he’s no longer enraged, he regrets his rant. He’d have cursed out anyone else he’d heard say that. It’s some ableist nonsense. “Disabled soldiers are just as capable as everyone else. If they get cleared by medical, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to serve. Some of this country's best men have been injured in battle… If they are willing to go back out there, it’s to our country’s benefit to let them.”
“But you said…”
“I know,” Alex says, pulling away from him enough to be able to look him in the eyes. “But I didn’t mean it.”
“No?” There’s that little bit of old insecurity in Michael’s eyes as he says it.
It’s been a few months since Alex has seen it. Things between them have been so good that Alex had naively hoped that it was gone forever. But it doesn’t surprise him that he’s seeing it now. Alex going off to war has always been a difficult thing for both of them. Their relationship has never survived a deployment. This time, Alex is determined to break that trend.
“Well not the disabled part. I help champion for disabled rights in the military. I can’t very well complain that I’m being treated like everyone else, can I?”
Michael’s eyes go to the ground and refuse to meet his own.
“The only reason you reenlisted was to keep me safe, and now they are sending you to a war you don’t want to fight.”
Alex’s stomach drops as he curses himself for that slip of his tongue. He never should have said that either. He’s 0 for 2 tonight.
“Hey,” Alex says, grabbing onto Michael’s face gently and getting him to look at him. “Keeping you safe was a reason to reenlist but it wasn’t the main reason to reenlist.”
“No?” He looks doubtful.
“Project Shepard is my family’s legacy, and I needed to see it through. I needed to make sure it stayed dismantled. And yes, doing so kept you safe and that’s great, but I needed to do that for me. To be able to heal from all my shit with my dad,” Alex explains, hoping Michael gets it.
“I don’t want to lose you,” Michael says. “Every time you go off to war, it’s my fault.”
“What?” Alex says. He’d thought he’d heard all of Michael’s crazy insecurities by now, but this is a new one.
“Your dad only made you join the Air Force after he caught us together,” Michael says. “And every time your enlistment period was up, I did something to scare you back into it... I don’t want to be the reason that you keep going to war. Because one of these days I’m going to scare you back into it and you’re not going to make it home.”
Michael starts to cry and each tear stabs at his heart.
“Okay, that was a lot.” Alex gives a small laugh as he starts to cry too. He’s been getting better tackling Michael’s emotional dumps and not running away when they happen. It’s still not easy and his first instinct is always to run, or ignore it with the distraction of sex, but he’s trying.
“But… I’ll try to tackle it,” Alex says. “For starters, my dad was always going to push me into the Air Force. Sure, I had plans to make music and go to college, and my dad threatening you is the reason why I didn’t rebel. But he was always going to find a way to get me to enlist. His evil knows no bounds and he would never have been okay with a son not upholding the family legacy. As for the rest… I was stupid and young. And you didn’t scare me back to war. You only ever offered me a home and a family, and I was too broken to accept.”
“And now?”
“And now, I can’t tell you what’s going to happen. The only thing that’s predictable about war is that it’s unpredictable.”
Michael’s eyes go back to the ground, but Alex chases them until Michael meets his gaze again.
“I can promise you that I’m going to fight like hell to get back to you. That I’m no longer young and stupid. I know what I’m doing and while I can’t control what happens, I’m not going to make stupid mistakes out there. Not when I have a wonderful man waiting for me at home.”
“Yeah?” Michael looks doubtful and Alex realizes that he’s never actually assured Michael that they aren’t breaking up during this deployment. He’d just assumed that much was obvious, but perhaps not. Perhaps Michael still needs the actual words.
“Yeah,” Alex says with what he hopes is a reassuring smile. “I’m in this. If you’re in this, I’m in this. We survived ten years apart, we can survive six months.”
Michael nods and attempts to nonchalantly wipe his eyes like Alex could somehow have missed the fact that he’s been crying. Still, Alex has enough tact to ignore it.
“I’ll call as much as I can,” Alex assures him, settling his hands on Michael’s hips and pulling him closer. “Though it might be spotty until we get things established there.”
“I’ll write.”
“You’ll write?” Alex teases him. “You barely send texts.”
“I will write,” Michael promises, wrapping his arms around Alex’s shoulders and leaning his forehead against his own.
“Good.”
Getting letters from home are some of the only things that make war bearable. Alex rarely got any in the past, but the handful of letters he’d received from Maria, Liz, and Greg over the years had certainly brightened his days. Alex has always missed Michael during deployments, but this time he’s positive it’s going to hurt even more. Letters will help.
“I’ve gotta remind you what you’ve got waiting for you at home,” Michael says with a teasing smile that lets him know the serious moment has passed. “Can’t have you shacking up with any sexy airmen all brokeback style.”
Alex laughs at that. “Never.”
“Good.” Michael kisses him before dropping his hands and walking back over to pick up his backpack. “Now let’s find our camp for real. I’m starving and horny, and I’d much rather have sex in a tent than on the ground.”
“It wouldn’t be the first time we’d had sex in the middle of the desert,” Alex reminds him.
Michael looks up in surprise as Alex sends him a knowing look.
“Well sure,” Michael says with a smile, reaching out for his hand. “But that was when I was living in a truck and didn’t have other options. And it was a one time thing. I had dirt and sand places that one never really should.”
“Fair,” Alex says with a laugh as Michael leans in to give him another kiss.
Alex takes a deep breath, assuring himself that things are going to be okay. He then looks up at the sky and, now that he has a clear head, can clearly see which direction they need to head.
“Come on, camp is this way,” Alex says, tugging on his hand.
“Did you just navigate by the stars?”
One glance at Michael’s face tells him that he’s never going to hear the end of this.
“Shut up,” he says with a blush. “It’s part of our training.”
“Oh! Part of your training? You mean you didn’t learn that on the reservation? You aren’t going to do a rain dance for me?” Michael laughs, and god… Alex doesn’t even care that Michael teases him the entire twenty minute walk back to camp, because Alex is really going to miss that smile when he’s gone.

Best Two Out of Three, Part 12
I don’t know if this is too soon but I’m too excited, so. This part is @what-does-mine-say‘s fault. And by fault I mean she basically read my mind so we’re running with it.
So. Much. Angst.
Best Two Out of Three
Part: 12/26
Pairing: Kenny Omega x OFC x Cash Wheeler and Adam Page x OFC
Warnings: Language, angst
Word Count: 3.1k
Catch up on previous parts here.
Five weeks later… AEW Fight for the Fallen
Alex sat on the couch in FTR’s locker room, her eyes glued to the monitor in front of her. Dax and Cash were wrestling the Lucha Bros, and she’d been on the edge of her seat the entire time. It didn’t help matters that Butcher and Blade had driven the Lucha Bros to the ring in Dax and Cash’s stolen truck. Alex had considered sneaking out there to try to steal it back; but Butcher was quite literally twice her size, so she thought better of it.
Suddenly, Dax pulled Fenix by his mask down into an inside cradle.
One.
Two.
Three.
“Yes!” Alex clapped her hands, happy that FTR had won. She pushed herself off the couch to go meet them at Gorilla—but something on the monitor caught her eye and she stopped. Cash and Dax had been jaw-jacking Butcher and Blade at ringside when the Young Bucks had appeared and superkicked Butcher and Blade. Matt took the key to the truck, and he and Nick walked to the ring and returned it to Cash and Dax. It surprised Alex; the Bucks and FTR weren’t exactly friends. But it was nothing compared to the shock she got when she saw Kenny walk to the ring—and he was carrying a cooler full of beer.
Her brow furrowed in confusion as she watched. Kenny offered Cash and Dax each a beer. Then he took one himself. What was he doing? He didn’t drink. She saw him say, “Just this once” as Cash and Dax cracked theirs open. But neither of them took a sip. Instead, FTR raised their beers and emptied them over Kenny’s head.
“What. The. Fuck.” Alex didn’t wait to see what happened next. She tore out the locker room door, making a beeline for Gorilla. She paced back and forth, feeling herself growing angrier by the second as she waited for Cash and Dax to come back through the curtain. Mercifully, it wasn’t long before they did.
“There’s my girl!” Cash proclaimed when he saw Alex. He walked over and wrapped an arm around her waist, drawing her close against him. “Hey, sweetheart,” he said as he started to kiss her neck; but she pulled away.
“Are you serious?”
He froze. “What?”
Her eyebrows arched. “What? You just dumped beer on Kenny’s head, that’s what.” She looked between him and Dax both. “Was that really necessary?”
“Oh, come on,” Dax breathed. “It was just a rib.”
She blinked. “A rib?”
“Yeah! Kenny poured out the beer we offered him two weeks ago, so we poured out the beer he offered us… on him.”
Alex’s eyes bulged at his smirk. Was he being serious? “He was literally about to have a drink with you out there,” she said with a gesture toward the ring. “You do realize that, right? Kenny doesn’t drink.”
Dax rolled his eyes. “You can take care of this,” he said lowly to Cash. It angered Alex even more—but before she could lay into him, Cash stepped in between them.
“Alex, come on. Why are you so upset about this?”
She opened her mouth—but before she could answer, Kenny, Matt, and Nick came back through the curtain. For a brief second, Kenny’s eyes met Alex’s; but he turned and walked away, disappearing backstage without a word.
Matt cut Dax and Cash a look. “Real mature, guys.”
“Oh, and you’re welcome for the keys, by the way,” Nick shot, and with that they followed after Kenny, leaving Alex alone with FTR once more.
Cash looked at her with remorseful eyes. “Sweetheart…” he started, but she cut him off.
“Don’t,” she said, and she turned and walked away. She couldn’t talk to Cash about this now; not after Kenny had looked at her like she’d been the one who’d just dumped beer on his head.

The door hit the wall with a loud bang as Kenny burst into the Elite’s locker room, Matt and Nick at his heels. He kicked a chair, sending it skittering across the floor, and when he couldn’t find anything else to hit, he pulled his beer-soaked shirt over his head and threw it hard against the wall. Matt and Nick looked on, unsure what to do or say. It would probably be best to just let him get it out of his system.
“What the fuck was that?” Kenny shouted. “Who the fuck do they think they are?”
Matt opened his mouth to answer—but Kenny cut him off.
“She left me for that? For someone that fucking childish?”
Matt and Nick glanced at each other. So that was why he was so angry. “I don’t think Alex is happy about it either, man,” Nick said.
“Yeah, she looked pretty upset,” Matt agreed.
“Oh, did she? I didn’t notice because of all the fucking beer her boyfriend dumped on me,” Kenny sarcastically bit, just as the door to the locker room opened again. Kenny’s brow lowered when he saw who it was. Adam. “Oh look, it’s FTR’s new best friend! Thanks for the warning, pal.”
Adam bit down on his jaw. “I didn’t know they were gonna do that, Kenny,” he evenly returned. “But I didn’t know you were gonna go out there and try to have a drink with them, either. What did you honestly think was gonna happen?”
Kenny’s eyes widened. “Oh, so it’s my fault I got beer dumped all over me?”
“That’s not what I’m saying,” Adam returned with a frustrated sigh. “But did you really think Dax and Cash would believe that you wanted to have a drink with them? You don’t drink, man. They probably thought you were trying to pull something on them.”
Kenny ran a hand through his hair, momentarily forgetting that it was wet with beer. He angrily shook the liquid off as he pulled his hand away in disgust. “Well, I guess you’re right, Adam. Because honestly, I didn’t want to have a drink with them. I wanted to throw that whole fucking cooler at Cash’s fucking head.”
Adam’s eyebrows arched. He saw the situation with a little more clarity now. “Is this about the beer or is it about Alex?”
Kenny’s eyes darkened at him. “Don’t you fucking talk to me about Alex,” he spat.
For a second, Adam was stunned. But then he got angry. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”
“You know what it means,” Kenny returned. “You didn’t want her to be with me and it was fucking obvious.”
Adam faltered when he heard that. But this was a long overdue conversation—and if Kenny wanted the truth, then he’d give it to him. “Because I didn’t want her to get hurt again,” he said.
Kenny took a threatening step toward him. “Oh, so you just assumed I would hurt her?”
“Well, it was kind of hard not to, Kenny!” Adam argued. “Do you know how many times Alex came crying to me over you last year? And I don’t mean complaining or whining—I mean full-blown fucking crying. There were times I wanted to deck you in the fucking face for how you treated her.”
“I know!” Kenny burst. “You don’t need to remind me about how fucking shitty I treated her!”
“Then why are you so surprised that I was concerned about it happening again? She’s one of my closest friends, Kenny!”
“Yeah, well I’m in love with her, Adam!”
The room went instantly quiet. Adam, Matt, and Nick all stared at Kenny in open-mouthed shock. “What?” Matt said.
Kenny ran a hand over his face, fully realizing what he’d just said. It had just come out—and he didn’t want to talk about it. “Forget it,” he quickly breathed. “I’m gonna take a shower.” He walked over to his bag, grabbed his things, and retreated into the bathroom before any of them could ask anything else. It wasn’t that he’d shocked himself with what he’d said. He’d known for weeks that he was in love with Alex. Five weeks, to be specific; he’d known it the moment she’d walked out of his hotel room after she’d admitted her feelings for Cash. But this was the first time he’d admitted how he felt out loud—and now that he had, he was worried it was too late.
* * * * * * * * * *
“Thanks for meeting me.” Alex looked down into her beer as she sat across from Callie in a booth at the hotel bar. “I actually really appreciate it.”
“Of course,” Callie returned as she stirred her straw in her cocktail. “I’m not gonna lie, though—I was surprised I was the one you asked.”
Alex laughed wryly to herself. She was a little surprised, too. But, somehow, Adam’s cookout scheme had actually worked. She and Callie weren’t best friends, but they’d grown on each other over the last five weeks. And honestly? It was nice. “Well, I didn’t want to go to Adam because he’s probably sick to death of hearing about my guy problems. And I didn’t want to go to Trent or James because they’re not good with this stuff, and I definitely didn’t want to go to Chuck now that I know he actually was in love with me at one point. And Kris is out injured so… honestly, you were my sixth-string pick of who to talk to.”
She smirked. Callie playfully rolled her eyes. “You’re lucky this drink is good,” she returned.
Alex’s grin grew wider; but it quickly faded. “Speaking of drinks… I can’t fucking believe Cash and Dax did that to Kenny.”
Callie frowned. “Is this your first fight with Cash?”
She just nodded. She and Cash had only been official for three weeks now—it seemed way too soon for them to have their first fight. But he’d poured beer on Kenny’s head. If it had been anyone else, she probably wouldn’t have cared. But Cash knew damn well she’d picked him over Kenny. Because of that, his and Dax’s stunt was a step too far.
“Well, you have every right to be upset,” Callie said. “It was a jerk move to begin with… and Cash knows your history with Kenny.”
“It’s barely history,” she returned.  “I was sleeping with him five weeks ago.” She ran a frustrated hand through her long dark brown hair. “Did you know he was gonna go out there like that?”
Callie immediately shook her head, her blonde waves moving over her shoulders. “Kenny? No. Neither did Adam. I couldn’t believe he was actually going to have a beer with them.”
“Right? It didn’t make any sense.” She took a sip of her own beer then, but suddenly realized she didn’t want it and pushed it away. It had been the wrong drink to order tonight.
“So I guess you haven’t talked to Cash about it yet?” Callie asked as she eyed Alex’s suitcase next to the booth.
She shook her head. “No. I came straight here from the arena; I haven’t even gone up to our room yet.”
“Well, now might be your chance, then,” Callie said with a glance at the entrance to the bar. Alex turned to follow her line of sight. Cash had walked in. Their eyes connected across the room. She turned back around.
“I guess so,” she breathed.
Callie didn’t say anything in return. The next thing Alex knew, Cash was standing next to the booth. He looked down at her. “Hey. Can we talk?”
She hesitantly bit her lip; but she nodded. Callie knew that was her cue. “I’ll give you two some privacy,” she said as she picked up her drink and stood from the booth. Alex expected Cash to take her place, but he nudged his chin at her.
“Scoot over. Please.”
She slid further into the booth as he sat down next to her. Their legs touched underneath the table. He gripped her thigh. “Are you still mad at me?”
“I’m annoyed with you, yeah,” she admitted as she looked at him. It made him frown.
“I know. I’m sorry. But it’s like Dax said—it was just a rib.”
She rolled her eyes. “It might have seemed like just a rib to you, Cash, but to me it seemed like you were rubbing salt in a wound.”
He looked down at the tabletop. “I know,” he admitted. “I see that now. But I’m surprised by how much it upset you.”
She looked down at her hands, picking at her fingernails. “Well,” she breathed, “I get that you and Dax have your eyes set on the tag titles; I want that for you, too. And I know things will be more tense than average between you and Kenny because of everything that’s happened. But I would really appreciate it if you didn’t make it any more tense or awkward than it already is, Cash. I don’t want our relationship starting out with that… bad juju hanging over it.”
He squeezed her thigh. “I don’t either,” he said. “You’re right—it was a step too far tonight. I apologize for that. The last thing I want to do is make things worse on you.”
He looked into her eyes. It was obvious by the earnest look on his face that he meant every word. “Thank you,” she said. “I’m still not happy about it, but… I know it wasn’t intentional.”
He smiled. “Come here.” He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into him. “I don’t ever want to upset you like that, sweetheart.”
A frown tugged at her lips. “This was our first fight.”
“I know. But hey.” He brushed her hair over her shoulder and said into her ear, “Now we get to have makeup sex.”
A pleasant tingle ran up her spine as he kissed her neck. Makeup sex was definitely a silver lining of the situation. “You better bring your A game, then,” she teased.
“Please, you know I always do. You certainly didn’t complain last night. Or this morning.”
Alex bit her lip. They needed to get to the room—now. “Well, you can start by taking my bag to our room.”
He smirked. “Yes, ma’am.” He stood from the booth and offered her his hand as he grabbed her suitcase. Alex took it, interlacing their fingers together. It was less than ideal to start off her relationship with her new boyfriend while he was literally feuding with her “ex.” But, judging by how good her hand felt in Cash’s as he led her up to the room, she was hopeful that they’d get through it.
* * * * * * * * * *
“That was quick,” Adam said when Callie walked back into their room, obviously surprised she was back so soon. She hadn’t even been gone for ten minutes.
“Yeah well, Cash showed up and asked to talk to her, so I figured I should leave them to it,” Callie explained. She joined him on the bed and snuggled against his side, wrapping her arm around his middle. He hugged her close.
“I’m glad you two are getting along. It seems like you’re even becoming friends?”
She looked up at him. “She called me her sixth-string pick of who to talk to.”
“Ha!” he let out a loud burst of laughter. “Sorry,” he quickly said. “That’s kinda funny.”
Callie smirked despite herself as she rested her head back on his chest. But it faded as her thoughts turned to her conversation with Alex. “I don’t know what I’m more shocked by—that FTR did that to Kenny or that Kenny was honestly going to have a drink with them.”
Adam shook his head. “I don’t know what Kenny was thinking. I don’t think he was, to be honest.”
“Probably not,” Callie agreed. “Matt and Nick told me he was pretty heated afterward. They said he kicked a chair across the room.”
There was a pause. And then Adam asked, “Is that all they told you?”
She looked up at him again. “Yeah… why? Did something else happen?”
He drew in a deep breath, causing her head to rise with his chest. “Oh, something else happened, alright.”
Callie sat up and looked at him then, equal parts concerned and curious. “What?” she asked. She couldn’t have predicted what Adam said next.
“Kenny said he’s in love with Alex.”
Her mouth dropped. “What?” she repeated. “When? How?”
“Right after the thing with FTR happened,” he said. “I went to the locker room because I had a feeling I’d have to diffuse the situation. But then Kenny and I started yelling at each other about Alex… and he just spit it out.”
Callie’s eyes widened. She couldn’t believe it. “Do you think he meant it?”
Adam nodded. “Yeah. I mean, he shut down the conversation after he said it but… he definitely meant it.”
“Wow,” Callie breathed. She was stunned. She knew Kenny cared for Alex—but love? And now, after she’d already chosen Cash? “Well, I guess it’s good that he admitted it, but… Alex seems really happy with Cash. Well, not tonight. But in general.”
Adam let his head fall back against the headboard. “Yeah,” he breathed. “She does.”
Callie’s brow furrowed. He looked upset. “What’s wrong?”
He sighed again. “I just… I’m responsible for Cash and Alex getting together. I literally told Alex that I thought Cash would be better for her than Kenny. And now that I know how Kenny feels... I don’t know. I feel guilty.”
“No,” Callie immediately soothed, shaking her head. “So what if you said that? You were just looking out for your friend, Adam. You shouldn’t feel guilty about that.”
He frowned at her. “I went behind Kenny’s back, Cal.”
She pouted. He really did look guilty—and she wanted to make it better. “Don’t beat yourself up about it,” she said, rubbing her hand over his chest. “Kenny made his bed by hurting Alex the first time, and now he has to lie in it. That’s not your fault. So stop worrying about it…” She trailed off and placed kisses along his jaw leading up to his ear. She nibbled his earlobe.
“Mm,” he hummed. “Are you trying to distract me?”
She smirked. “Is it working?”
He growled deep in his chest as she nipped his ear again. “Go get in the shower,” he ordered.
Callie didn’t need to be told twice. She jumped off the bed and hurried into the bathroom. Adam wasn’t far behind. If there was anything he could use right now, it was a distraction.

Follow up to It’s the Little Things
Alex poked his fingers between the blinds and slowly lifted them, hoping not to draw attention to himself.
It was 9am on a blazing hot Saturday and he’d been woken by the sound of a weedwacker whirring right outside his window. He didn’t have to look to know exactly who it was, but he was curious as to what the fuck Michael was doing.
He’d be lying if he said the image of Michael, shirtless and sweating, didn’t turn him right the hell on but this was getting out of hand.
After Alex had spilled his guts, throwing his insecurities into the wind before thinking about where they’d land, he couldn’t get up. He lived for helping Michael, for finding ways to give back, to make some kind of difference, however small, in the other man’s life.
Michael had managed to call him on his bullshit, though. It was Alex’s way of staying involved, of being as close to Michael as he could be without physically being near him.
But he’d pushed too hard and it really was over.
That first night was awful. He replayed their conversation, or the word vomit he’d spewed, nonstop. He drank, and then drank some more, until he woke up on the couch, stiff and barely able to move with a headache that made blinking agonizing.
After a puke, a coffee and some eggs, Alex had taken Buffy outside and sat in one of his patio chairs, taking in his house, his car, his stuff.
It meant little now.
The thought of Michael, of their potential relationship, possible future, had quietly been keeping him going all these years. To have that hope extinguished...he didn’t have the words to describe how empty he’d felt.
His chest ached as he went inside and opened his laptop, starting his search for the country’s top cities. He knew he’d want to live somewhere busy, populated, but safe. His job could easily be remote once his re-enlistment period was up, plus he had quite a bit of money saved so he could take his time getting readjusted.
New York City and LA definitely had his attention, the music scenes alone would be worth the trip, but the apartments were tiny, and he may end up having to sell a kidney to pay his rent. Miami wasn’t his scene and Seattle looked like the type of place to send his depression spiraling.
He grabbed his third cup of coffee and moved to the living room, getting comfortable on the couch and making room for Buffy to rest her head on his lap. He found another one of those top cities lists and was intrigued by Portland. LGBT friendly, relaxed people, music scene, not so far that he couldn’t visit if he wanted to.
That afternoon was spent clicking through photos, checking out postings for apartments, falling down a YouTube spiral of some artists who got their start in the city.
The next day, feeling a bit better with a plan under his belt, he’d ventured outside to Beam Me Up for a cup of coffee and a snack. On his way out, he literally bumped into Maria.
“God, sorry. Did any of that spill?”
Alex just blinked, an uncomfortable wave of jealousy moving over his skin and pinching him where it landed.
He shook his head and said, “no. It’s okay.”
She gave him a smile as they stood awkwardly in the doorway. He wanted to say something, even if it was small or unimportant, just something to break the ice, but his instincts telling him to get home were clouding his thoughts.
“Michael mentioned he saw you the other day.”
Alex’s eyes grew wide. They hadn’t spoken in weeks; nothing more than worthless pleasantries and she knew why; he’d been honest with her. He’d also felt he’d been fair, leaving them both alone to their relationship, not interfering or getting involved.
At least he’d thought that was what he’d been doing.
But now, as he stared at his oldest friend, watching as her face changed to apprehension, maybe realizing that playing the we can connect over Michael card was the wrong move, he felt angry.
“I’m moving.”
Maria stepped back, surprised. “What?”
Alex nodded, looking around the street, hoping he looked as relaxed and casual as he was aiming for. “Yep. When my enlistment period is over.”
Her mouth opened and shut a few times, small sounds trying to become words escaping. Eventually, she was able to croak out a, “where?”
Alex shrugged and took a sip of his coffee. “Portland looked interesting. I’m looking at a few apartments there.”
The silence took over again as the street became a bit busier with the weekend tourists coming out to enjoy the weather and the sights. Maria’s hair bounced, the ends of her head scarf wrapping loosely around her throat. “You’re leaving because of me, right? Because of me and Michael? You can’t just go because – “
“I have no reason to stay, Maria.” Their eyes met and both sets were filled with a sadness neither could describe. Alex’s heart felt too heavy in his chest, memories of late nights and shared shakes and tears and joints and hugs threatening to leak out of his eyes. Instead, he smiled. “My time here’s up. I did my part but it’s time to see something new.”
With that he turned and walked to his car, coffee cup shaking in one hand while his fingers curled painfully around the bag in the other. Fuck he missed Maria. But he didn’t know if he’d ever be able to look at her the way he used to again.
It was that night, his excitement dwindling and replaced by a quiet desperation, when the first text had come through.
Don’t leave.
Alex stared. Obviously, Maria had told Michael about their chat. Maybe he felt bad, a twinge of guilt. Alex hoped he did, then felt guilty for hoping Michael felt guilty. This was exactly why he had to leave.
He ignored the text and went back to his computer, sipping on a beer and occasionally giving Buffy some nice scratches behind the ears.
His phone pinged again. Alex stared at it, hoping his glare would make it blow up or something. In the end, curiosity got the best of him and he looked at the text.
Don’t leave me.
Alex’s heart raced as his fingers moved without thinking.
You wouldn’t come with me anyway.
He turned his phone off and tossed it across the room, not caring when it bounced along the wood floor a few times.
He didn’t sleep well after that. Thoughts of car rides and spaceships and apartments and soft blankets and bright sunshine and honey curls played behind his eyelids every time he tried to rest.
The further away from Michael he was, the better it’d be for everyone.
The next morning his doorbell rang at 8am. Alex had thought it was a part of his dream at first, cuddled up on a firm, warm chest, wiry hairs beneath his fingers while nails scraped his scalp, lulling him back to sleep. When the buzzing continued, he was thrown back into reality with a big, empty bed and a headache to boot.
Grabbing his crutches, he went to the door and threw it open, shocked to find Michael on the other side looking clean shaven with a cup of coffee.
Michael looked…different. Yes, the beard was trimmed, maybe his hair, too? His clothes were definitely clean. But there was an energy, an aura, around him that Alex hadn’t seen in years. One side of Michael’s mouth lifted, an almost bashful smile, and he held out the coffee cup. Even Michael’s fingernails were clean. Alex lost some time staring at those nails and remembering the comfort they’d brought him in his dream just moments before.
Michael cleared his throat, bringing Alex’s attention back to the moment. “Whole milk and one sugar.”
Alex raised an eyebrow. “What are you doing?”
Michael shrugged and pushed the cup gently into Alex’s chest. “Bringing you a coffee. Good morning, by the way.”
Alex would later blame the broken night’s sleep for the dreamy way he’d whispered out, “good morning,” while accepting the cup. He took a sip and was instantly in his glory. His favorite coffee from his favorite café made perfectly delivered by his favorite…
“Well, have a good day, Alex.”
While Alex stood in the doorway, mouth hanging open at a loss for words, Michael sauntered back to his truck and drove away.
It had fucked with Alex for the rest of the day.
After that morning, Michael made appearances most days. A delivery of a burger and fries one afternoon, randomly bent over the hood of Alex’s Jeep for a tune up a few evenings later, dropping off a case of Alex’s favorite beer. Each time Michael came around, the conversation was limited. Michael would smile, explain why he was there and, as soon as he was finished, he’d smile and say goodbye, driving off once again.
Alex hated it. It was so confusing and contradictory, it made him fucking furious.
Alex really loved it.
He was seeing more of Michael than he had in years and Michael was absolutely different but in a way that suited Michael, not as though he’d changed to fit someone else’s wishes. He looked great and seemed healthy. Happy.
Apparently, today was clean up the yard day. With a sigh, Alex turned from his window and looked at Buffy with her head raised and cocked to the side in concern.
“Yes, it’s Michael.” Buffy’s tail wagged furiously. “You little traitor.”
Alex watched him for a few quiet minutes, taking in every detail, from the way his curls looked almost blonde when the sun hit just right, to the pattern of body hair scattered across his torso, to the flex of his legs when he bent and stretched.
He’d realized the other night, as he sipped on one of the beers Michael had bought him, that he’d stopped looking at apartments, collecting more information on Portland. All it took was for Michael to notice him and his universe tilted, and its center of gravity became Michael once again. That was the first night since their fight he’d allowed himself to cry again.
With a sudden surge of resolve, Alex threw open his drawers and grabbed whatever clothes his hands touched. He took the time to get his leg on, wanting to feel stable and steady for whatever came next.
By the time he got outside, Michael was leaning against the bed of the truck looking like a tan god, bottle of water to his lips, head tossed back with his face covered in sunlight.
Taking a deep breath, Alex charged ahead.
“I want a reason.”
Michael startled a bit, lost in his own thoughts, and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. Alex couldn’t help but stare at the dampness his hand missed.
“What reason?”
“Don’t be coy, Michael. It’s not cute.”
Playfully, Michael pouted while batting his lashes. Alex wanted to laugh and scream and cry and hold Michael, confusion and caution warring within him.
Alex looked at the ground, noting a nasty scuff across the toe of one of his boots. He pushed his foot into the sand and whispered, “why are you doing this to me?”
Michael made a quiet noise that sounded hurt and stood straight, blocking out the sun from Alex’s face. “To you?”
Alex looked up and fell into hazel eyes. He nodded. “You’re not actually trying to talk to me. But you’re being- being really kind and generous. I don’t understand.” He shook his head this time and took a step back so he could think. “You told me to get out of your life, I say okay, and then you come flying back into mine.”
Michael shook his head and started digging around the bed of his truck, apparently looking for his t-shirt to throw on as well as his trademark hat. Turning back to Alex, he shrugged and pulled out his car keys.
“I have no idea what I’m doing, Alex.” The silence between them felt thick with opportunity; to be honest, straightforward. Just a chance. “But that night I…” Michael scoffed and broke eye contact, looking around at Alex’s house. “You’ve got a loose shingle up there – “
“That night you what, Michael?”
With a sigh, Michael continued, “I knew that might be it. I know I’ve pushed, and you’ve walked and recently I’ve been pushing a lot harder but I just, I dunno, never let myself imagine you not being in my life somehow.”
Alex crinkled his eyebrows, confused yet again. “If you didn’t want me to go then why say all that shit about – “
“I have been drowning for years, Alex. In booze, in sex, in work, in regret. Just fucking drowning. Then you came back, and your dad was the fucking devil and then my mom and Max. I couldn’t separate it all out. Everything felt like it went back to you.”
Alex nodded, feeling the familiar creep of guilt working its way into his gut. “And I said I understood all of that. I gave you as much space as I could.”
“Did you?”
Alex sighed and dug his hands into his pockets, wishing he had something in his hands to keep them better occupied. He could either choke Guerin at the moment or pull him into a suffocating kiss. He couldn’t decide.
“I guess I didn’t.” He blinked as the next thought smacked him across the face. “I’m not as strong as you, Michael. I can’t know you’re nearby and struggling and do nothing.”
Michael shook his head, taking a step closer to Alex.
“That’s why I’m moving. I can’t stop myself from being in your orbit and you made it clear that’s what you wanted. It’ll give me a fresh start, too, you know. No one’ll recognize the Manes name. No one will care. I can just be another face out there, have a little anonymity and figure out what I’m doing.”
“I don’t want you to go.”
Alex groaned. “C’mon, Michael! You just came here not that long ago bitching that I sent you some food! I’d think you’d be thrilled that I’d be gone.”
Michael laughed. Alex watched as his face changed with the humor and his heart broke a little to see how much younger Michael could look when he relaxed. Even if just for a second. “I told you stay away. You didn’t. I told you again stay away and then you did. Then I couldn’t stay away and now you’re gonna leave. Can we just say the fucking things we need to say and stop doing this?”
Alex took the challenge at face value and straightened up, nodding his head. “Fine.”
“Why did you do all those nice things for me even when I told you to stay away?”
“Because I love you.”
The ease with which those words slid from Alex’s mouth surprised both of them. There was something freeing about the honesty, of finally just saying the words out loud to Michael without fear of rejection or consequence.
He took a deep breath. “Because I love you and I was worried about you.”
Michael licked his lips and looked away, nodding in understanding.
“Your turn,” Alex whispered, pulling Michael’s attention back. “Why do you keep showing up here when you told me to stay away?”
“Because I regretted everything I said as soon as I said it.” Alex lifted an eyebrow, not fully understanding. “I thought I needed distance. Not seeing you all the damn time helped me focus on other things. And I did tell you the truth; I didn’t think we were good for each other and I really, really wanted to be good for Maria.”
Alex took a step back, feeling the burn in his throat start at the mention of his friend’s name when Michael’s callused fingers wrapped around his wrist. “The second I realized I probably pushed you completely out of my life, I regretted it. I don’t want you to leave. I don’t want you to stop caring. I want to be better. I just – “
Michael stopped and took a deep breath, clearly overwhelmed as his voice began to crack. Alex slowly shifted his wrist from Michael’s grip and gently held his fingers in his own.
Michael sighed, “can you ask me one more time?”
Alex nodded. “Why do you keep showing up here when you told me to stay away?”
“Because I love you.”
They stood together in the blazing sun, sweating and staring at one another as though the world had fallen away. The moment was broken when Alex’s eyes shifted to Michael’s turquoise belt buckle. “But you love Maria, too.”
Michael nodded and watched helplessly as Alex let go of his hand. “I do. But I love Maria the same way you love Maria.”
Alex rolled his eyes. “I don’t know what that means.”
“She’s my friend, Alex. That night we fought I had an epiphany.”
“An epiphany?”
“Yeah. You probably already know this but I’m an alcoholic.”
Alex’s head whipped up with concern in his eyes. His mouth moved but he couldn’t think of anything to say.
Michael took it as his cue to continue. “I’ve also been a shit brother to Isobel, so I’ve been working on that. But the morning after I left here, I talked to Maria. Told her how I was feeling, she talked about her feelings and, we both just told the truth.”
“Which was?”
A smile tugged on Michael’s lips. “That we both love you.”
Alex cleared his throat, doing his best not to start crying. “I’d like to get back to the alcoholic piece of this, and I’m glad you’ve stepped up to support Isobel but, uh, are you and Maria still together?”
Michael shook his head. “Not for about, what? Two weeks now?”
Alex nodded. “Okay.”
“Go out with me.”
Alex waited a beat, making sure he’d heard clearly before repeating, “okay.”
“The Crashdown? Lunch tomorrow? Around 12?”
Alex nodded. “Yeah. I’ll meet you there.”
Michael smiled and closed his truck. Slowly, he took off his hat and leaned in, kissing Alex on the cheek. They were both just piles of sweat and beet[TS1]  red, but Alex thought it might be one of the most romantic moments of his life.
“I wanna do this right, Alex. From the beginning.”
Alex smiled. “Me, too. I’ll see you tomorrow. For our first date.”
Michael laughed, his youth bursting through every pore. “For our first date.”

The End Is Where We Begin (7/?)
“Director Danvers, we have a situation.” Alex faltered on her way into the DEO, startled by three agents heading toward her. “What’s going on?” “A meteor crash in the Pacific.” The agent in the middle said hurriedly as Alex walked past him. He hastened to follow, looking down at the tablet he was clutching. “We’ve detected high energy levels emanating from the crash site.” Alex sighed in response. Her day just seemed to keep getting worse. “Put together a team and let me know when you have eyes on the situation. I’ll be interrogating our new prisoner.” “Yes, Director.” Alex continued on her way, moving quickly down the hallway with her teeth clenched. She didn’t know how she’d managed to lose a prisoner, how she’d employed yet another traitor but she was going to get to the bottom of it. She let herself into the next room, letting the door swing closed behind her. Walking past the mostly vacated cells she came to a stop in front of an occupied cell. “Let me get this straight. You not only willingly released a prisoner, you then locked yourself up right after?”
Raven looked up in surprise, his brow furrowing at the sight of the director standing in front of his cell. “I knew there was no point in running. Besides, I wanted to stay behind to plead my sister’s case. She couldn’t stay to argue for herself.” “That’s who Hisa is to you? Your sister?” “Yes.” Alex stared at the dark-haired man long and hard for a moment before shaking her head in disbelief. “And why couldn’t she stay to argue her case for herself?” “She has to save our younger sister, Itsuki.” Raven stood up from the hard bed he’d been sitting on and paced across the cell. “She’s not one of the bad guys. We just want to protect our family. You have a sister, don’t you? You should understand.” “Are you threatening me?” Alex stepped close to the barrier separating the two of them, anger flickering in her eyes. “Of course not.” Raven backed away, raising his hands in surrender. “I just want you to understand why we’re doing what we’re doing. We’re not intentionally working against you.” Alex watched him closely for any sign that he wasn’t being sincere but found none. “Where did your sister get kryptonite?” “She doesn’t have kryptonite. She didn’t even know the woman she works for had it until they fought Supergirl and Dreamer….speaking of which, can you tell Dreamer I’m sorry about knocking her out? I tried to make it as painless as possible.” Raven sank down onto the bed once more, figuring it wouldn’t be a good idea to get too close to Alex. Alex ignored him. “Who is Hisa working for?” “A woman who has it out for Supergirl. She calls herself Banshee.” Raven paused, noticing a flicker of recognition cross Alex’s face. “You know her?” “You could say that.” Alex rubbed the back of her neck. She couldn’t help but wonder what else could possibly go wrong today. They already had so many issues to contend with. “How is she linked to Lena Luthor?” “Lena Luthor?” It was Raven’s turn to sound confused. “She’s not. My sister knows both of them, that’s the only connection there. Banshee is the person who’s holding Itsuki and that’s why Hisa is working for her. It’s not what you think though, she’s also working with someone else to take Banshee down.” “Lena?” Raven shrugged his shoulders. “She hasn’t told me and I haven’t asked. I’ve told you everything I know.” Alex nodded reluctantly. She believed him. “I appreciate your cooperation though you should know that what you’ve told me won’t keep us from looking for your sister.” “Right.” Raven smiled, shuffling backwards so he was sitting with his back against the wall. “But you’ll have to catch her first. She won’t fall for the same trick twice.” “Good things I have more tricks up my sleeve.” Alex quipped before she turned to walk away. She hesitated as her prisoner called after her. “Alex?” “Director Danvers.” Alex corrected, turning on her heel. “About Dreamer…?” “I’ll pass your message on. If I remember.” Alex turned and walked away, shaking her head. “Thank you!” ---- Kara lifted her hand, hesitating for a moment before she knocked briskly on the door in front of her. As she waited for a response, her eyes darted toward the empty reception desk. She was grateful Lena’s assistant wasn’t there to keep her from passing at least. The security guards had been alarmingly easy to get by. “Lena?” Kara called out softly when nobody appeared at the door or called for her to come in. “Are you in there? I’m here for our...appointment.” She grimaced as the words left her lips. Appointment sounded so formal but she supposed that would be what Lena wanted now. Formality and nothing else. If she even still wanted to help her. “Lena?” No answer. Kara glanced briefly over her shoulder before she carefully turned the handle to Lena’s office. Finding it unlocked, she let herself in and paused at seeing Lena sitting at her desk. She closed the door behind her and took a quiet step closer to the desk, noticing that Lena’s eyes were closed, her head braced on the heel of her hand while her elbow rested against the desk. Kara listened closely as she silently approached. The sound of Lena’s breathing let her know that the CEO was sleeping soundly and a small smile graced Kara’s lips. She paused, allowing herself a couple of seconds to watch before she turned and slowly started to walk away. Their meeting could wait. Her hand was on the door handle when a voice sounded from behind her. “Kara?” Kara froze, her heart sinking with guilt. She turned to find Lena was awake and sitting up straight in her chair. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. I wasn’t sure if our meeting was still on after...well what happened last night.” “I was just resting my eyes.” Lena lied, clearing her throat afterwards. “Our meeting. Right, of course. Let’s do that.” Kara stared at Lena in concern. “It’s fine, it can wait. You’ve been so busy lately, you deserve to take some time to yourself.” “Kara, sit down.” Lena stood up and walked around the desk, gesturing to the couch on the other side of the office. “I’m not busy.” Kara did as she was instructed, walking to the couch. She sat down, fiddling with her sleeve. She looked up as Lena sat down next to her. “Before we start, I wanted to apologise for last night. It didn’t happen the way I wanted it to but Alex is doing her job and technically I work for her. I’m not saying I don’t support her decision to arrest your friend because I do but I know it couldn’t have been easy to watch. Trust me, I know what it’s like to watch someone you care about being treated like a...” She paused, taking a breath as Lena slowly nodded. “Well you know. I’m rambling. I’m sorry, I-I didn’t really expect to get this far if I’m honest. Usually at this point you’ve already told me to get out three times. Not that I blame you!” Lena sighed and looked down at her lap. “Maybe you should.” “Huh?” “I wanted to apologise too.” Lena said, her brow furrowing. She didn’t look up, not wanting to see surprise cross Kara’s face like she knew it would. “I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did last night. I was just angry in the heat of the moment. I understand that you didn’t have a choice in the matter of taking Hisa in. I’m not saying I don’t disagree with it. You know that I do. But this is your job.” “Right.” Kara agreed softly, uncertain if Lena was still angry with her. “For what it’s worth, Alex will do everything she can to help her with finding her sister. I don’t doubt that for a second. She’ll do the right thing, she always does.” “I hope you’re right about that.” Lena replied quietly. She cleared her throat and finally looked up to meet Kara’s eyes. “I’m working on a theory so we can avoid what you’ve seen in your vision. If I’m right, we should be able to safely remove the antimatter wave as it approaches the earth. With your help of course.” “Really?” Kara felt her heart leap at the suggestion. “How?” “It’s just a theory at the moment.” Lena warned as Kara leaned forward slightly. “But I think if I fashion a Quadruple-Loffe configuration I can create an electromagnetic trap of sorts. Incorporating a vacuum may help to get the antimatter inside of the trap but I need to figure out-” Lena was cut off as Kara leaned forward and hugged her tightly without warning. “It’s not a guarantee. I still need to find an energy source powerful enough, not to mention materials resilient enough to withstand that kind of heat.” “I know, I’m sorry.” Kara guiltily drew back. “It’s just...there’s hope. I really needed this.” Lena mustered a small smile but before she had a chance to say anything, Kara’s phone started to ring and the reporter quickly fished it out of her bag. “Sorry, it’s Alex.” Kara apologised before answering. “Hey, Alex. What’s going on?” Lena stood and walked across her office to give Kara a moment to speak to her sister. She sat back down in her seat, her eyes darting over the plans on her desk. She worried that she had given Kara too much hope. There was so much to do, so many things they’d need to collect before she even started to construct the trap. Not to mention, that it was only theoretical. “What do you mean, she got out?” Kara’s words caught Lena’s attention and she looked up to see Kara furtively glance at her. She raised a questioning eyebrow. “She’s with me but...yeah. Yeah, I-I’ll ask her.” Kara sounded reluctant. “I’ll call you back if I find anything out. Bye.” “Has something happened?” Lena asked as Kara hung up the phone and walked toward her desk, fidgeting nervously. “Is it about Hisa?” “Yeah. She escaped this morning.” Lena watched as Kara bit her lip. “I didn’t have anything to do with it. That’s what you wanted to ask me, isn’t it? Not that I’m unhappy about her escape but I haven’t seen her since Alex arrested her. If you need evidence of my whereabouts during the breakout, I can give you access to my surveillance equipment. Though I’d hope it doesn’t come to that.” “Of course not, I believe you.” Kara said honestly, her shoulders slumping in release. “But if you hear from her can you…” She paused helplessly. “I don’t expect you to tell me if you see her. I know she’s your...friend. Just please be careful with her. I don’t want to see you get hurt.” Lena crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I’m not going to let that happen again.” “Yeah, I guess not.” Kara said quietly. Her gaze drifted away from Lena’s and a tense silence settled between the two of them. “I should probably go then.” Lena slowly nodded and stood back up. “Probably. I’ll call you if I need anything? I mean...I might need some things picked up for the device I’m trying to make.” “Of course. Anything you need. Thank you, again. I don’t think I’ve said that enough. I don’t think I could ever say it enough.” Kara said honestly, her chest tight. “It really means everything to me that you’re willing to help.” Lena shifted uncomfortably but tried not to let it show on her face. She didn’t want Kara to die. That had become increasingly clear to her the more she pondered the situation and tried to think about how to avoid Kara’s foreseen demise. She had wanted to tell herself that she wanted to keep Supergirl alive but it wasn’t just that. More importantly than Supergirl, she just wanted Kara to still be in the world. She couldn’t say that. “I’m happy to help. I really have to get back to w-” “Wait, wait. I’m sorry.” Kara grimaced at the rush of words from her mouth. “Just one more question and then I’ll let you get on with things.” She waited until Lena nodded for her to go ahead before she tentatively continued. “The other night, at the bar...you told Hisa you trust me. Did you mean that?” Lena mulled that over for a moment while Kara anxiously fidgeted. “I trust you’ll do the right thing for a person in need. I trust you as the protector of the city but as a friend? I really don’t know. It seems trivial in the face of everything that’s happening, I know, but I’m not sure I can move on from what happened. I can’t be your friend again. I’m not sure how. I don’t even know how to stop being angry with you.”
“It’s not trivial.” Kara replied quietly. “I understand. I’ll see you around, Lena.” Lena’s eyes flicked up as Kara turned to walk away from her. “I would like to try.” Her words caused the Kryptonian to freeze in her tracks. “And maybe someday…maybe it’ll be almost like it was before.” Kara clenched her jaw, her eyes misting over. “I’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. Anything.” “Come by tomorrow.” Lena slowly sat back down. “It couldn’t hurt to bounce my ideas off someone. If you’re free, of course.” “I’ll be free.” Kara’s voice broke and she quickly cleared her throat. “I’ll see you tomorrow!”
Lena let out a shuddering breath as Kara practically ran from the room, closing the door behind her. She closed her eyes, trying to calm the inner turmoil wracking her. As angry as she was with Kara, she couldn’t help but miss her friend. She wanted her back, she just didn’t know if that was possible. --- Lena froze as she stepped out of the elevator into her loft, her skin prickling as the cold temperature of her apartment washed over her. She shuddered, her eyes darting back and forth for what had caused the chill. It became clear as she stepped forward and noticed the door to the balcony was open. “It’s just me.” Lena whirled around, her hand already reaching for the signal watch in her pocket before she saw a glimpse of red hair. “Hisa?” Hisa shielded her eyes against the unexpected light as Lena flicked the switch up on the wall. “Sorry, I uh...dripped on your expensive looking carpet.” “You’re soaked.” Lena’s brow furrowed as she looked at the puddle at Hisa’s feet. “It’s not even raining. What happened? I thought you were locked up.” “I broke out. Their plans for me didn’t really match up to what I had in mind so…” Hisa shrugged her shoulders. Lena sighed and turned, walking out of the room. “Um…?” Hisa stared after Lena in confusion. “Okay, you’re mad. I get that. Supergirl is your friend or whatever and you vouched for me with her and now you’re probably getting a heap of backlash because of my impromptu exi-” She stopped as Lena reappeared, pushing a towel toward her. “Oh. I can’t take this, it’s too-” “Don’t say expensive.” Lena warned, briefly narrowing her eyes before she brushed past Hisa and went to the kitchen. “I believe you were in the middle of an apology?” “I was about done, actually.” Hisa followed Lena, quickly towel drying her hair to keep it from dripping. “I’m just sorry to be causing you so much trouble.” Lena shook her head in response as she set about making some coffee. “You wouldn’t have been in there if it hadn’t been for me.” “Well that’s true.” Hisa grinned as Lena looked at her in surprise. “It’s not your fault. It’s not even Supergirl’s fault, she’s just doing her job. I would have wanted to lock me up too but that doesn’t change the fact that I can’t be right now. When I find Itsuki and she’s safe, I’ll hand myself in. Supergirl can do what she wants with me then.” “Why are you here?” Lena sat down at the counter, staring at Hisa. “Supergirl already asked me if you’d made contact with me. This is going to be the first place they look for you, and if it’s as urgent as you say it is, you wouldn’t be wasting time in my apartment, would you?” Hisa was silent for a moment, her eyes darting to the ajar balcony door. “My contact’s gone AWOL and I need help. I need a way to nullify a sonic scream so I can save my sister. You’re the only person I trust now, you’re the only person who can help me.” “Fine, I’ll help you. But you owe me.” Lena said, slowly nodding her head. “And I should warn you, I’m going to call upon that favour soon.” “You know you could have just asked me instead of making it sound like a threat. I wouldn’t say no to helping you if you need it.” Hisa stretched out her hand to Lena. “Partners?” Lena felt her stomach sink uncomfortably as her mind drifted back to Kara. They had been partners at one point. She could only hope that she wasn’t making a mistake now. She couldn’t be friends with Kara again but she couldn’t let her die either. She’d do anything to stop that. She grasped Hisa’s hand, giving it a quick shake. “I’ll get you some spare clothes. Are you up for a night in my lab?” “I thought you’d never ask.” Hisa smirked, drawing a soft laugh from Lena. --- “What’s the situation?” Alex questioned as she stopped short of the two DEO agents, her eyes glancing upwards towards the large screen on the wall before she looked back at the two agents. “You said the Exploration Team found the meteor crash sight?”
“Yes, Director Danvers.” The first agent nodded quickly, glancing to the screen to her left in a state of panic. “We’ve been waiting for your order to investigate the crash but…”
“But what?” Alex frowned, turning to the nervous agent in confusion. It was rare to see an agent of the DEO worried about something such as a crashed meteor. “What’s wrong?”
“We’ve been detecting strange energy signatures coming from inside the meteor.” The agent answered before taking a deep breath, turning towards the director. “Director, We think something is alive inside of it.”
Alex nodded slowly, taking a moment to think about what she should do. She had no idea if whatever was inside of the meteor was hostile or not and she didn’t like putting her agents at risk. “Fall back, we’ll get J'onn to do a scan over it and see if he knows what’s inside.”
“Copy that, Director.” The second agent nodded and turned back to his screen, gently pressing against the side of his headset. “Seal Team Alpha, Orders are to return back to base asap.”
Alex frowned as she noticed the second agent's eyes widen despite his attempt to hide it, watching as he nodded nervously. “What is it?”
The second agent quickly turned at the Director’s question. “The meteor is opening.”
“What?!” Alex's breath shuddered as she struggled to think about what to do. She had considered calling Kara and asking for Supergirl’s help but considering how little her sister was telling her about what was going on with her she reconsidered. “Are we able to establish visual contact?”
“Yes, Director.” The first agent nodded quickly and immediately started to type on her keyboard, glancing up at the screen every couple of seconds. “Visual contact established.”
Alex frowned in confusion as her video feed appeared on the large screen. She could barely see anything outside of where the submarine’s lights were shining. Inside the light lay a large meteor the size of two large fully grown men resting at the bottom of the sea with a strange green light glowing from small cracks around the exterior. She had no idea why but every part of her was screaming danger. She hurried to speak to her team. “Seal Team Alpha, get away from there!”
“Yes, Dir...wait, WHAT IS THAT?!”
Alex froze in horror as a large hand the size of a large person’s head tore through the front of the submarine like it was made of tissue, the sounds of the agent’s agonizing screams echoed throughout the entire room until the video feed tuned black with the last thing Alex noticing was the water turning red with blood. Goosebumps crawled their way up her skin and suddenly she felt icy cold. “Wasn’t the...the Submarine lined with Nth metal?”
“Yes, Director.” The first agent nodded slowly, still in a state of shock. She had never seen or heard anything like what she just saw before in her entire life. It was like a horror movie. “The entire exterior was lined with a two inch thick Nth metal lining.”
Alex jumped as the video feed from the submarine flickered back to life, attracting the attention of every DEO agent in the room. The video was covered in a thick red hue, chunks of flesh and bones floating around with large shards of metal from the submarine around it. In the centre above the split open meteor floated a large shadow twice the size of a white martian tearing apart one of the agents, it’s detail impossible to pickout thanks to how dark it was. She gritted her teeth as the creature took off, swimming out of sight before the video cut out. “We need Supergirl.”

I would love a jolex shot with prompt 61. Looking forward to the next chapter of “Third Times a Charm” as well!
I’d Rather Fight With You Then Make Love To Somebody Else
“Alex...Alex stop” Jo cries as she comes barreling down the stairs behind him, grabbing onto the back of his arms just as he reaches the door. “Stop.” She snaps as Alex shrugs her off not even looking back at her, his hand still firmly holding on the door handle, his knuckles going white.
“Where are you going?” Jo asks in a small panicky voice as she pushes her way in between him and the door.
“Mers” Alex's grunts refusing to look at Jo wincing as he feels her hand stroke across his cheek.
Jo shakes her head, her forehead wrinkling. “No...No”
“You don’t tell me what to do Jo.” Alex hisses looking up at her, trying to move her to the side so he can get out but she holds still, her eyes darkening as she crosses her hands over her chest. Alex sighs rolling his eyes at her stubbornness, she knows he'll never hurt her, never lay his hands on her so now he's stuck standing here.
“You don’t walk out on me...you don’t do that anymore,” Jo growls poking at his chest, Alex looks up to meet her eyes and he softens when he sees her watery tears threatening to fall.  He’s not walking out on her, he's never walking out on her. It’s just sometimes they're too similar, they're both so stubborn and pig-headed that when they get going there's no end in sight, they'll just keep fighting and one of them will end up saying something they regret. That's why he wants to leave because he wants some space, some time to cool off, get some perspective and he can’t do that when she’s glowering at him with tears streaming down her face.
“You can scream and yell and you can sleep on the couch and give me the cold shoulder but you can’t leave me.” Jo rages, throwing her arms out dramatically.  “We’re not dating anymore, Alex we’re married. You can’t just leave when you’re done fighting. You have to stay...you have to stay.”
She finally breaks, her voice cracking as she rubs her eyes furiously, “You have to stay because you're my family and I need you here...So you wanna be mad at me? Be mad but please don’t leave.” She cries.
“Hey shh,” Alex whispers, pulling her into his arms so he can rest his chin on top of her head, rubbing her back gently, trying to calm her down as she breaks into another fit of sobs. “I just...sometimes you drive me insane and you push me to the edge.”
“Because you’re being ridiculous…” Jo hiccups winding her arms around him and squeezing tight.
“See you’re doing it again,” Alex exclaims pulling back to look at her.
“I’m trying to talk to you-” Jo grumbles refusing to let him go.
“-No you’re not, you’re trying to tell me how I feel.” He snaps, pushing her arms off of him as he retreats back to the staircase and taking a seat.
Jo lets out a deep sigh, furiously whipping her tears away “No I’m not. Your feelings are valid I just don’t…-”
“Don’t what?” Alex cuts her off raising his voice above hers.
“Don’t agree.” Jo snaps, pushing his shoulder. “Fine...fine say Dr Brown is flirting with me. I’m not reciprocating, it’s harmless.” She shrugs pacing back and forth in front of Alex.
“Pfft” Alex snorts, leaning back on the staircase. The muscles in his jaw twitch as he bites his tongue.
“What is wrong with you?” Jo cries, throwing her hands up in the air,  “You're not the jealous type.”
“I don’t care. I don’t care if he flirts with you.” Alex snaps, standing up, towering over her. “I don’t care if he stares at your ass and daydreams about doing you in an on-call room. But I do care if my wife is going around kissing other guys.” Alex’s chest heaving as he turns away from her.
“I...what?” Jo's face scrunches up and her voice goes quiet “ I didn’t kiss him...I would never.”
“But he tried to kiss you and you didn’t put him straight.” Alex seethes, rubbing his temples. “If you did he wouldn’t have been all over you today. He would know to keep his distance…”
Jo couldn’t believe they were here having this stupid argument, how could Alex not trust her? “I told him I was married...he knows I’m married. The whole hospital knows I’m your wife.” Jo screams back, shoving Alex's chest. “And only an idiot like Dr Brown wouldn’t notice how crazy in love with my husband I am you, idiot.”
“Is that why he was bragging to the whole O.R  today about finally breaking your walls down?”
“What did you want me to do Alex? hit him?”
“Well it wouldn’t be the first time, would it? Knocking guys around is your thing.”
Jo stumbles back, shocked at his words “Fuck you, Alex…” she growls.
“Not with that attitude.” Alex snaps, back sighing as he instantly regrets his words. This is what he meant when the fight the push until they push too far and it’s usually him that says something he regrets.
“You’re an asshole, you know that?” Jo scoffs, she should’ve let him walk. “You’re the one with a reputation for sleeping around with anything with a pulse, you’ve slept with half the staff at the hospital and for years I have ignored every stupid snide comment about you because I love you and I trust you and after all this time for you to not..-”
“I trust you.” Alex interrupts.
“Do you?” Jo shrieks, sniffling as she furiously wipes away the last few tears from her cheeks.
“Yes.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
“Because I love you and you deserve so much better than me Jo and you could get it too. I just don't wanna hold you back.” Alex grumbles finally looking up to meet her eyes, the sadness that shines back breaks his heart, he’s an idiot.
“Alex baby…” Jo sighs, kneeling down in between his legs at the bottom of the staircase, she takes his face in between her hands giving him a sympathetic smile, as she pulls his face up forcing him to look at her.
“No don’t...” Alex grumbles trying to avoid her burning gaze.
“That’s crazy, you’re crazy. I love you so freaking much Alex you are the only man I could ever want.” Jo half laughs at the absurd idea that she would ever leave him.  “You don’t hold me back, you love me for exactly who I am. Who the hell is gonna put up with all my crazy hey? No one but you.” She mumbles, pressing her lips against his hungrily asking for more, as she licks his bottom lip begging for entrance desperate for him to feel how much she loves him.
“I love you.” Alex moans, wrapping his arms around her waist pulling her closer, so she can straddle his lap, their bodies press up against each other as they fight for dominance. He bites her bottom lip making her moan and arch her back, pressing herself against him giving him better access to her neck.
“Mhmm, I love you more.” She pants out, biting her lip trying to hold back a moan as Alex begins to suck on that spot below her ear that drives her wild.
“Still gonna tell Brown to go fuck himself,” Alex grumbles, against her neck, the vibrations making Jo shiver in his arms.
“You do that baby, Brown can fuck himself and you can fuck me.” Jo sighs running her hands through his hair, her eyelids hooded as Alex continues his assault of her neck, there's definitely going to be a mark there tomorrow but Jo thinks that's exactly what Alex wants like the diamond ring on her finger isn’t enough, he still has to mark his territory, it’s not like she cares the only person she ever wants attention from is Alex.
“Excuse me? Wash your mouth out Josephine Karev we are married, we don’t fuck...we make love.” Alex teases,  lifting her up off his lap swiftly knocking her legs out from under her, throwing her over his shoulder, grinning as Jo’s laughter fills the air, she squeals grabbing onto him as he makes quick work of the stairs heading towards their bedroom.
I miss Jolex bad today. Sorry for the delay, slowly getting through all my prompts. Also, chapter two of Third Times a Charm is coming tomorrow.
