SUBI'S EXTRAVAGANT REVIEW ON GROSS!

A couple months ago, I have read, dare I say, the most dramatic fic I've ever laid my two eyes upon (in a good way!!).

It was (nearly) everything I thought I would NEVER enjoy: situationships, flawed main character, drama.

Yet here I am... Absolutely pleased with the drama-filled, humourous rollercoaster of a romance that supposedly had no chance of growing into something more.

Warning, this review is bound to contain spoilers so if you haven't read @moamidzyism 's 'Gross!' yet, read it here! Now that that's out of the way, ON WITH THE REVIEW!!!

Yes, you can like unlikable characters, actually!!

Never would I've thought in a million years I'd end up rooting for a 'bad' main character. I assume a good chunk of us have been shoved in the face countless of times by the media what 'good' main characters are supposed to look like. Like we were programmed by society to like the good heroes and pull out our stakes and pitchforks for the evil villains.

I was in a reading rut for the longest time (I still am tbh 😭😭) and I always thought perhaps the stuff I was reading didn't fit me anymore? Was it the genre? The writing style? No. None of that. I was simply bored of always reading 'perfect' stories with 'good' characters and expecting plot lines.

It is genuinely so very astounding how, in my lifetime, I stumbled upon a 'badly written' y/n and still ended up enjoying her journey and the overall plot of the fic. Moral of the story aside, 'Gross!' has absolutely helped shift my perspective on 'reading what I enjoy' and 'enjoying what I'm reading'.

Character dynamics

I love how everyone has their own little friend group and super top secret bestie groupchat convos, definitely adds to the drama and complexity of the story as a whole.

All the friend groups are so different and although the 'yeonjun-taehyun-yuck!yn' gc is my favorite of them all (a buncha sassy silver-tongued fellas (ESP YUCK!YN, what's not there to love?) I LOVE THE 'B🐶s WHO BRUNCH' SO MUCH TOOOOOO.

I'm not into itzy but Chaeryoeng and Yeji y'all, Chaeryoeng and Yeji UGHH THEY'RE SO SUPPORTIVE AND LOVING ESP TO GROSS!YN, TRULY RAISING THE STANDARDS FOR FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS AND BEING A GIRL'S GIRL

I can definitely learn a thing or two from them too, growing up as someone who's always taught to 'love someone for their gains' which can be partially true but that's not the trajectory of healthy friendships!! You can be besties with a complete Mary sue but if you're not they're biggest hypegirl then literally what's the point????

SOOBIN, CHAERYOENG AND YEJI HAVING A JOINT SLAY TOWARDS THE END OF THE SERIES 😭😭😭😭

Sungchan being right but we all still mutually despise his character in the fic purely because he's Gross!y/n's ex... Something I never knew I needed until now. Ex-boyfriends are typically portrayed as candy-stealing 🍑 holes (which he was!!) but to have them actually spit facts that are right and raw and brutal but he's right???? My new favorite trope ✍️the 'bad but right but we still hate him' Ex✍️

Every. Single. Kai and Yuck!yn cameo. Couple goals. *Throws hands in the air* COUPLE GOALS!! IM TRULY NOT EVEN TRYING TO BE BIASED, THEY CAN BE CHARACTERS IN A NOVEL AND I'D STILL FIND THEM SO SO CUTE!!

hottie yeonjun who you meet on a night out and you start getting to know him, he seems kinda like a huge flirt and like it won't lead to anything serious, but then you agree to meet him again and he's all lean lines and charisma but then you realize the stroller you saw before is his and so is the kid inside it and it takes your brain a second to compute

and he gets all shy the way he does and he's like, "oh btw this is my kid. my sitter bailed on me" and you have a million questions but you don't wanna pry and if you thought he was hot before, seeing the way he is such a gentle and caring dad makes him even hotter

chapter 7 got me losing it—

this time reading smut with yj was even harder than in the previous chapter (i mean her losing her virginity to yj, I actually thought I was gonna cry myself to sleep), not sure if that was intentional or not. deep down oc is still suffering from the single thought of letting gyu go, same for him. moving places may seriously break them down soon… which means that they are destined to be together after all 😔 (jkjk im delusional) i understand if she chooses yj in the end and they may it work, but I don’t see their relationship to be fully sincere or oc being genuinely in love (or feeling attached to) with yeonjun, and I’m not sure if yj will be happy to cope with it all the time.

the last words about asking oc to take photos for the group and it being gyu’s idea in the first place… 💔

btw im truly waiting for haeun to finally show up and do some shit ><

the struggle is definitely intentional but she is doing better at letting gyu go. she is not thinking about him every moment of every day. she is starting to let yeonjun in and may actually grow to love him in time

this time you were really really bored, yeonjun is out to buy some ice cream just because you were craving for it

youre craving for ice cream? he'll get you some. craving for cakes? he'll buy one for you. craving for chocolates? he'll buy lots and lots of them for you

literally, this man will buy you everything and knows every single details about you

hes head over heels for you and only for you

"Y/N !!! IM HOME WHERE ARE YOU LOOK WHAT I BOUGHT"

you quickly ran over to the door to greet your boyfriend (but actually you just wanted your ice cream)

"I didnt hear you unlocking the doors but anyways welcome home, wheres my ice cream?" you eagerly asked

judging by him holding 2 bags, one is a lego bag and the other is just a normal plastic bag,

he definitely bought more than an ice cream..

"a quick kiss and i'll give it to you"

you, ofc, gave him a peck on his lips (lets be honest who wouldnt want to kiss his lip?)

"cookies and cream ice cream just for my baby" he reached the ice cream that was in the plastic bag, handing it over to you

"and whats that?" you asked, pointing the lego bag

"legos of course" he replied to you in a happy tone

you groaned knowing your boyfriend would be focusing on the legos and ignoring you for another hour

"buuuut i have a surprise for you too"

oh? a surprise?

"i figured you might like it" he reaches inside the lego bag, handing you a lego box with lego flowers on the front cover

"wait...are we gonna build legos together??"

he nodded with adoration in his eyes

"I always notice you getting bored whenever im building legos, i dont want my baby to be bored, would i?" he said, pinching your cheek in cuteness

"that hurts you know" you gently rubbed your cheek with an annoyed face

"it hurts? aww im sorry baby" he then attacked you with kisses all over your face

you see, the thing about yeonjun is that he may look cold outside but hes very affectionate and loving to the people he loves (especially you wink wink)

you grab a spoonful of your ice cream and feed him like hes your little kid (well tbh he IS a little kid himself)

you were also building your lego flowers on the floor while he builds his own legos on the coffee table just bcs he needed more space for his legos cause its usually big

it turned out to be fun actually, with you talking non sense while building and yeonjun just agreeing to whatever you said

your conversations with him went a little bit like this:

"lego flowers would match our bedroom"

"yea i know"

"this color is pretty"

"mhm"

"the last dinosaur to ever exist mustve been lonely knowing all his friends went extinct"

"yeah so lonely. poor dinosaur"

not that you mind him ignoring you, you were used to it anyways

it was all fine until one of your lego pieces went missing

you went "oh no.."

and yeonjun's first instinct is to look at you after you said that

"why? did something happened?" he asked full of concern

(damn, yj went protective so quickly 😩)

"one of the lego pieces is missing"

he lets out a dissappointed sigh knowing you and him will have to search for it

"no no its okay, i can find it on my own, you can go back to your legos" you kindly offered yourself to find it before he could say anything

BUT

hes like "no, we're finding it together"

after what felt like hours searching it (honestly it took 10 minutes), you finally found that final piece to complete your lego flowers

"and...im finished" as you put the final piece on your creation

you and yeonjun clapped softly with a small 'yayy' dw, its a cute habit you two developed while dating

"you look so proud" yeonjun pouted at you, taking out his phone to take photos of you

"smile for me baby, hold the flowers straight"

yeonjun really do be acting like those moms who forced you to pose as they take photos 🥲

"thanks for the new lockscreen" he said as he kissed your forehead as a thank you

"are you gonna be putting my photos as your lockscreen everytime you captured one?"

"yes and?"

you rolled your eyes jokingly at him
