Love Next Door finale spoilers:
I think my favorite part about the last episode is that Mo Eun went to the South Pole. Dan Ho wasn't pissy about it when he found out. Even though he was told the info before Mo Eun could tell him personally, he went out and got her cold weather gear and was supportive of her goals. He obviously presented it to Yeon Du in a way that made her happy for Mo Eun as well. We didn't have this stupid, unnecessary conflict which caused emotional pain for the woman because she was fulfilling her dream.
As much as I was slightly underwhelmed by the show, I really do think the writers did a nice job of bookending everything. The way they mirrored episode one with the moms bragging about the kids - but now it was Seok Ryu's mom bragging about Seung Hyo and vice versa - nice touch. Our leads bickering in the end like they did as kids was also sweet.
We knew she was going to get dad's restaurant, but it was nice the way it was written. I'm glad they didn't do a last minute 'she has cancer' scare again.
Overall, it was a nice, low conflict show that subverted some Kdrama tropes while leaning into others.

Poor Mo-eum getting rejected by Dan-ho after expressing her feelings, but I definitely get why he shut her down and I think it ultimately goes back to Yeon-du. We learned today about how over-protective Dan-ho is of Yeon-du and how that has gotten in the way of Yeon-du doing things a lot of other kids her age would enjoy doing. And that protectiveness is also going to extend to Yeon-du's emotional safety. Dan-ho obviously likes Mo-eum well enough and sees how much she loves Yeon-du, but he has no way of knowing that she'll stick around for the long-term. He's not going to want to get Yeon-du's hopes up only for something to happen and Mo-eum is no longer in their lives. I'm sure that Dan-ho obviously is still struggling with the loss of his wife and he isn't sure if he's ready to let someone in again knowing that he could lose them.
I'm going to guess that the news about Mo-eum either potentially going or officially going to the South Pole will get him to accept and confess his feelings.

I may be one of the few that hopes Mo Eum doesn’t give up everything she has been working towards for a relationship..
Yes, we’ve seen her crushing on Dan Ho and bonding with Yeon Du but this woman lives for her job and she has been working towards this South Pole position which is finally there in the palm of her hands.
I honestly hope she takes the job then comes home and then she’ll get her happy ending.

Final thoughts about love next door? Both the show and the main romance? I thought it had a lot less depth than it wanted to think it did and one of the most underwhelming romance I've ever seen I don't know why I was supposed to root for them since one of them came off like an obsessive weirdo and the other one came off like she was barely invested in this relationship which for a supposed romance is not a good look.
i was just about to make a post gathering my thoughts so i'll just write them here. i agree with the things you said.
it started off so well, i really liked their dynamic, the writing was witty and fun and it had great potential for that friends to lovers angst. then it fell into the mistake so many dramas seem to fall into and it's that it seemed to lose sight of what it was supposed to be, which was a romance/family drama. it definitely didn't have the depth it thought it had although they made some good points in the beginning with the overworking and depression. i still don't know what the point of seok ryu's stomach cancer was aside from bringing tension between every single character and to have the conflict drawn out for a few more episodes. it was basically a plot device to speed up the romance and to have her family realize how much they've mistreated her.
which brings me to seok ryu's family in particular. i know that no family is perfect and it's natural to have flaws but seok ryu's mom specifically was getting on my nerves. all she cared about was herself, her reputation, what people would think of her and what's bad in her life. like what do you mean it took your daughter getting cancer for you to realize you've been treating her like shit? the whole side story with seung hyo's parents was of no interest to me either, too much time wasted on his parents rekindling their romance and the mom's fake dementia and cheating.
haein and somin seemed to have great chemistry only when they were still friends, after the romance started to develop it felt forced and uncomfortable which was heightened by the fact that the show was content with having minimal intimacy and chaste kisses. seok ryu said she ignored her feelings for 30 years and that she actually liked him first which they have shown no proof of, she didn't even think about him like that until he confessed which is where the show took a nosedive for me. their initial chemistry and bickering just disappeared and instead there was this weird tension and energy between them which can be attributed to the fact that there was this thing hanging between them, seung hyo made things awkward by confessing. but even after they got together it's like they haven't been friends for 30 years and they switched into full couple mode, talking sweetly and romantically which just felt out of place and not how we got to know them and their dynamic. they brought it back briefly only in the last episode with the headlocking and the fighting at the end.
my main issue with the show was that i was Bored. boring. too many plotlines and characters and relationships i did Not care about. episodes and episodes (with an average runtime of 1h 20m btw which was unnecessary) of the main couple suffering after seung hyo's confession because he kept pushing her for an answer and she didn't know what to answer him so episodes just went by with basically no development in their relationship.
the two exes taking up the air for several episodes was mind numbing.
mo eum, dan oh and yeon du did not interest me at all, they were basically as exciting as a saltine cracker. the only compelling thing about that relationship was that he was a single father which they backtracked on and revealed he's actually her uncle, nothing to see here. i was bothered by the chasteness of the main couple (who got one implied sex scene) but this couple were driving me up the wall with how sanitized and underwhelming their romance was. i have more electricity between me and my carpet when i rub my socks on it. kim ji eun was wonderful i like her because she's very lively and funny but watching yun ji on act was like being waterboarded. not trying to be a hater but i don't know if he was directed so badly or he's just Like That. every time we got a pre schooler level peck on the lips i took psychic damage.
there were things i was uninterested in but i still appreciated like the lavender group, i think it's cute that there was a similar friend group as the main one but with older women and it's important to represent that. or the dad's struggle with wanting to provide for his family and feeling inadequate and coming to terms with his retirement to make place for his daughter's dream. although me liking this had a lot to do with how much i like the actor who portrayed the dad because he made me feel very sympathetic towards him.
this was one of those dramas that felt too sanitized and polished for me, the romance was underwhelming because it was so tired and overdone that it didn't make me feel any tingles. just a very forgettable drama all in all

Also, I really like how they haven’t made Dan Ho being a single father a big deal. I’ve watched so many dramas that show so much judgement and hate towards single parents and their children so it’s great to see here that they didn’t make a big fuss about it (they might in the future and I wouldn’t be surprised if it does become part of the plot).
I also like how they have built a relationship between Yeon Du and Mo Eum and I like even more that Yeon du told her not to yell at her dad lol
Tho I didn’t like how Mo Eum was scolding Dan Ho after the fever thing, she really had no clue what was happening and going off assumptions

I absolutely adore Mo-Eum; she is so kind and a true hero. But the way that confession was SO inappropriate on many levels. She knows that he is NOT healed from losing the love of his life. That’s apparent in everything about their lives. You can’t just ask someone you’ve known a short time to let you, what? Adopt their kid? All he knows is that she’s a fun friend for his daughter whose mother is a great nanny. That does not equate to being capable of being a mother. Let’s not even mention that she’s a lowkey daredevil trying to pursue someone who hasn’t even let his daughter ride a bike. The amount of trauma he is still holding onto and fear of losing the one thing he loves most in the world has to be debilitating. He’s not even good at socializing which is apparent in his trying to get close to Choi Seung.
Also, let’s not forget she is very literally considering leaving the continent. Being the mom/wife won’t stop that pain, and she should know that from watching Choi Seung’s parents. I think she’d be an amazing mother but everything she does at this moment is too childish. Right now, her mentality is closer to being a free spirit aunt or big sister. To be a parent you have to put a child first and she’s not doing that. She’s taking her own feelings into account. It’s similar to when she went off on him at the hospital when she didn’t even ask for an explanation on what happened. Though she really wasn’t owed one. But that backfired because Yeon Du is protective of her father like most kids would be in that situation. But moreover, Yeon Du gaining a new parent is not going to all of a sudden fix her and her father’s problems. She will always carry that burden of losing her mother even if she has a good adoptive one. He will always carry that burden of losing the woman. He thought he’d see forever with. So Mo-Eum needs to do more thinking and evaluating of her circumstance before taking on all of that. One day they could be very happy together, but she will need to stop being impulsive because he obviously really likes her. But doesn’t know how to move on just yet.

what beautiful episode!!!! i think it'll be one of my favorites! The first half was peak comedy scene after scene 😭😭 had me cackling while washing dishes in my dorm's common kitchen
And the second half was just so so sweet. the two friends coming in-phase after being out of phase for years! Just like seung hyo and seokryu.
Hye suk was always the more mature one. I've been very public about my dislike for misuk. Maybe because i see a lot of similarities between hye suk and seok ryu....and me? But i really appreciate how you can really care for a friend who you don't see eye to eye with. They bicker and envy, but in the end, they circle back to each other, like a binary star system. Friendship is just such a blessing to have in life.
There was SO MUCH in this episode that i loved. Yeon du and her wisdom beyond her age, her aggressive approval for mo eum. The dads being absolute dorks and adorable to the power infinity. The girl from 10 years ago who revisits geun sik's restaurant by chance and gives him closure and reminds him how much of a difference his food and his kindness made to people, even if they didn't mean much to him. I truly hope that seok ryu takes over the restaurant and seung hyo renovates it and geun sik's passion for cooking and feeding people lives on in seok ryu. The old lady marveling at the window and saying "id be able to live now." Oh man. I choked up. And seokryu's proposal 🥺 seunghyo gets to eat rainbows forever 🥺😭 im not crying you're crying 😭😭😭😭😭
And the funny funny bits. Seung hyo climbing to seok ryu's room to see her, teasing her about calling him 자기야. The vegetable fight!!! Jae suk and in suk locking the other two and telling them to pee in the chamber pot 😭😭 the dads finding ways to drink together in the middle of the cold (hot?) war. Danho and seunghyo's awkward af fist bump and seokryu's reaction 😭😭😭😭 i mean, i could go on and on and on!!
As i said before i think this is gonna be one of my favorite episodes and that's saying something, because there have been SO MANY! Ah, im gonna miss this show SO BAD. Jung hae in's beautiful face and his beautiful acting, jung so Min's impeccable comic timing and crackheadery, the wholesomeness of the whole cast...all of it. I'll miss alllll of it.
